Castleman’s disease (CD) is a very rare condition that can occur at any age and affects 16:100000 patients/years. CD is characterized by systemic inflammatory symptoms, generalized lymphadenopathy, polyclonal lymphocyte proliferation and multiple organ system dysfunctions, often associated with autoimmune manifestations, which may precede diagnosis, may be identified concurrently or may follow diagnosis. The given article presents the major and minor criteria on the basis of which the diagnosis is established, as well as the importance of interdisciplinary work in identifying and making the differential diagnosis of the Castleman disease.

Unclear retroperitoneal tumors, an interdisciplinary challenge - A case report and review of the literature.

Introduction and importanceUnclear retroperitoneal tumors impose major challenges for clinicians. Tumors can originate primarily from retroperitoneal tissue or secondarily invade into the retroperitoneum. While benign lesions also occur, malignant tumors are far more common. Clinical presentation depends on replacement or invasion of other organs and is therefore highly variable. The heterogeneous tumor composition makes a definitive preoperative diagnosis difficult. Surgical resection is the gold standard for treatment but often proves challenging due to frequent involvement of large retroperitoneal vessels.Case presentationWe present the case of a 70-year old woman diagnosed with a large, unclear retroperitoneal tumor. Initial clinical symptoms were increasing dyspnea and dysphagia in our clinic. Gastroenterologic and cardiologic workup was unremarkable. Computed Tomography (CT) revealed a large retroperitoneal mass in the right upper abdomen with severe displacement of the inferior vena cava and renal veins. The patient was scheduled for primary tumor resection. The procedure was challenging due to the vessel involvement and large blood pressure alterations during tumor mobilization. The post-op pathologic workup then revealed the rare finding of a completely resected paraganglioma. The post-surgical course was uneventful. One year after diagnosis, the patient is relapse-free.Clinical discussionAmong retroperitoneal tumors, paragangliomas and pheochromocytomas are rare tumor entities. Asymptomatic, sporadic disease is hard to identify preoperatively and can cause unexpected complications in the OR. An experienced team is crucial in achieving best short- and long-term outcomes.ConclusionThis case impressively shows the challenges of retroperitoneal tumors and the importance of interdisciplinary work in these cases.

El rol del profesional de ciencias económicas en el ciclo presupuestario

In this paper, the intervention of the economics professional in the different stages of the budget cycle will be addressed. The professional in economic sciences to whom we refer, is the one established in 1973 in law 20.488 (public accountant, bachelor of administration, bachelor of economics and actuary), who has an active role in the administration of the public sector more precisely in its intervention in the budget cycle. The scope of the study of this cycle is made up of different stages that, although they are specified successively within the same cycle, at the same time overlapping with the stages of the previous and subsequent cycles in time. In these stages one of the main instruments of any democratic State is specified: the public budget will have as many definicions as ways of looking at it. The work is complemented by a description of professional performance in them and the importance of interdisciplinary work.

The Hidden Affliction: Sexually Transmitted Infections and Infertility in History. Edited by Simon Szreter (Rochester, University of Rochester Press, 2019) 442 pp. $95.00

The Hidden Affliction is an interdisciplinary collection that explores the history of sexually transmitted infections (particularly gonorrhea and syphilis); most of its articles also link these diseases to issues of demographics and infertility. The collection is impressive in disciplinary and chronological scope, including work by historians, demographers, archaeobiologists, and virologists. It is divided into four sections—pre-modern sexually transmitted infections (sti), scientific approaches, and demography in the “Global South” and modern Europe. Although each of the articles stands alone, the overall editorial structure makes this collection into a cohesive unit that is worth reading as a whole book. Szerter’s introduction provides valuable insights about the topic and the importance of interdisciplinary work in the history of medicine more broadly. He argues that in order to obtain valuable knowledge about the ways in which venereal diseases led to historical infertility, we need not only to familiarize ourselves with the cultural and medico-social sources but also to “know as much as we can from today’s biological, evolutionary, and epidemiological sciences…. It is crucial not to restrict ourselves only to texts from the past but to embrace all available forms of relevant evidence” (12).Many of the chapters follow this logic, for example, by combining textual history with insights from ancient dna studies or epidemiology. Historians of medicine who want to familiarize themselves with scientific methodologies will find the second section particularly valuable. It offers a series of readable chapters about the virology and bioarchaeology of stis that serves as a useful introduction to these fields, although they may be too basic for experts. The fourth section, which includes Szerter’s own work, demonstrates the value of interdisciplinary scholarship most strongly. It examines attitudes to stis and declining fertility in Western Europe at the turn of the twentieth century. Each of the three contributions focuses on a different country (Germany, France, and Britain) and uses a different research methodology. The result is a thought-provoking examination of the subtle differences between medical views in these countries, as well as of the kind of historical knowledge gained from different scholarly approaches.Given the innovative nature of most of the work in this collection, it was jarring to find within it two chapters that make uncritical use of early twentieth-century anthropological descriptions of Pacific Islanders. These texts are not used as primary sources describing bygone attitudes but as acceptable descriptions of indigenous cultures to be cited by contemporary scholars. Tim Bayliss-Smith and Roy F. R. Scragg both argue that the demographic decline in some Pacific Island societies after colonial encounters was caused by the spread of gonorrhea, which can cause infertility in women while being otherwise asymptomatic. Their argument itself may be sound, but it is obscured by references to “Aphrodisian” and “Non-Aphrodisian” indigenous cultures, and descriptions of the “ritual promiscuity” and “sexual generosity” of indigenous women (206–209), or their reputation for “customary promiscuous behavior” (240). Substantial anthropological scholarship in the past several decades has criticized such descriptions of Pacific Island cultures, demonstrating that it obscures the true nature of colonial encounters.1Moreover, the other essays in the “Global South” section of this collection argue that colonial medical authorities tended to over-diagnose stis among indigenous populations due to false perceptions of promiscuity. The absence of a more critical engagement with these antiquated anthropological views is thus an unfortunate blemish on a collection that otherwise makes an important contribution to the history of medicine.

Neste artigo discutiremos a importância da Lei nº.10.639/2003 como um meio de desconstrução do racismo epistêmico/religioso, resistência para conhecimento e aplicabilidade no espaço escolar, e a importância do trabalho interdisciplinar como pontes para implantação e implementação da mesma. Faremos uma breve retrospectiva da implantação e implementação da Lei nº. 10.639/2003. Mostraremos alguns percalços para abordar saberes afrocentristas no ambiente escolar. Também refletiremos a questão do ensino religioso, assim como, a importância do trabalho interdisciplinar como meio de aplicabilidade da Lei nº. 10.639/2003.
 

Knowledge and perceptions of the profession of translators and interpreters among legal practitioners in Spain

Although legal professionals may be fully aware of the regulations on the right to translation and interpreting, they tend to be less aware of the implications of legal and sworn translation and interpreting. It is therefore of the utmost importance to develop the current state of knowledge on translation and interpreting in legal contexts, in a way that will professionalise the image of translators and interpreters in these areas. After conducting previous research studies in which we analysed the combination of language and law in university curricula and another one in which we sought to raise awareness among law students about the importance of interdisciplinary work between linguists and legal experts (2017a), with this study we aimed to go further by conducting research on how much legal professionals know about translation and interpreting in Spain. After a preliminary literature review on the topic, we will explain the methodology of our study and then show the results of the survey that was distributed among legal professionals in Spain. The conclusions will allow us to critically reflect on the topic and suggest ways to go past the thick veil of ignorance that still covers the work carried out by professional translators and interpreters.

The "Learning Through Play" project. Importance of interdisciplinary work among children born prematurely and their family groups in an area of high socio-environmental risk.

Several socio-environmental risk factors causea large number of children born prematurely, and without neurological disorders, to have low scores in their development, particularly in the cognitive and socio-emotional skills areas, thus evidencing a potential future risk. Strengthening bonds with the family and caregivers is critical for their adequate development. This article reports on the experience of an interdisciplinary team from Hospital Eva Perón de Tucumán, who designed a program called "Learning Through Play"for the promotion of child development and aimed at parents of preterm infants seen at the Follow-up Outpatient Clinic and the Department of Social Services, with the collaboration of the Department of Nutrition.

The case herein presented emphasizes the importance of having a knowledgeable surgical team that interprets lung function tests correctly.This is a case of a 13-year-old girl who underwent corrective surgery of a right tympanic perforation, with a history of difficult to control exercise-induced asthma. At the time of intubation, Cotton's gradeiii laryngeal stenosis was identified that required intervention prior to the scheduled procedure. Emphasis shall be placed on the importance of interdisciplinary work when evaluating these patients.

The continuing imperative for interdisciplinary work in learning disability

Welcome to the March issue of BJLD, this is my first editorial as the new incoming editor, and my first task is to record a note of personal thanks to the work of Professor Duncan Mitchell, who has demonstrated remarkable stewardship, steering BJLD through some difficult times. I have to say that I am delighted, as well as being very proud to be taking over as Editor of British Journal of Learning Disabilities, taking place at a culminating point in my career. Having recently taken early retirement, I have been awarded an Emeritus Professorship at the University of Hertfordshire and have also become Honorary Professor of Learning Disabilities at the Hertfordshire Partnership University NHS Foundation Trust. I now work part time as Professor of Learning Disabilities at the Institute for Practice, Interdisciplinary Research and Enterprise, University of West London. I have a portfolio of activity focused entirely on research and scholarly activity, thus, taking over the editorship of BJLD contributes to a cogent area of activity for at least the next 3 years. In this, my first editorial for BJLD, I have the privilege to introduce a wide range of papers, and two case histories, and this has reminded me of the continuing importance of interdisciplinary work in the field of learning disabilities. In the first paper, Katrina Holmes presents a fascinating paper that explores the positive and negative experiences of three people with learning disabilities who have used social networking sites. Next, Larry Lee and Alexander Carson explore practice that attempts to manage acts of intimate violence perpetrated by students with learning difficulties in a specialist college setting. Laura Shewan and colleagues present a paper on what parents with learning disabilities understood about their disability, and how they perceived this impacted on their parenting role. Their study suggests that these parents experienced some difficulties; however, these tended to be related to specific tasks only. Following a similar theme on parenthood Sheila Gould and Karen Dodd identify, a well-recognised risk of parents with learning disabilities that of having their children removed. She asserts that little research has investigated the impact of this on these parents. Her paper explores the perceptions of nine mothers with mild learning disabilities, and their experiences of having had their children removed. Next, Barbara Hurtado describes the experience of involving people with learning disabilities and additional needs in the recruitment of staff. She identifies that a significant amount of support, as well as additional time and adaptations to the interviewing and scrutinising processes was necessary in order to ensure that people with learning disabilities could contribute meaningfully. In the next paper, Stefanie Rubbert and colleagues explore concerns about the effectiveness of services offered to people with learning disabilities who were overweight. They report on the development of an interdisciplinary body awareness group that they established. Next, Helga Fasching from Austria explores how career counselling at school contributed to supporting inclusive transition processes from school to regular vocational training and occupation for school-leavers with an intellectual disability. And in a similar theme, Joanne Skellern and Geoff Astbury research issues of paid employment for people with learning disabilities. Their work critically examines the experience of gaining employment from multiple perspectives, including students with learning disabilities, parents, education staff and employers. In the penultimate case study by Leigh Hagan and Helen Thompson, they report on the impact of using a Speech Generating Device [SGD] on the communication abilities of a nonverbal individual with a moderate learning disability. Their findings reveal that using the SGD for this individual resulted in improvements in expressive communication abilities and pragmatic skills that included topic maintenance, taking conversational turns and reduced communication breakdown. Sexology in Norway in 2001 and 2011: A comparative and cross-sectional study

Summary In a comparative cross-sectional study Norwegian sexology practitioners have been studied in 2001 and in 2011 concerning professional background, sexology training, therapeutic approaches and clinical sexology problems. The Norwegian sexology professional group is small and the Norwegian Association of Clinical Sexology counted around 150 members in 2011. In 2001, a two-year half time further education program in sexology counselling started at the university of Agder. Since 2001, 164 sexology counsellors have been educated from this program. The objective of the study was to understand how these changes might have influenced the field of sexology in Norway. The participants in the 2011 study are significantly different from those who responded in 2001. More female sexology practitioners have entered the field. There are more respondents with a social and health bachelor degree, and fewer physicians and psychologists among the respondents. The participants use a wider range of therapeutic approaches, but not significantly more sexology treatment methods. The problems the participants see are in many ways similar in 2001 and 2011, but they report overall more problems from their female clients and more relational problems and problems with sexual desire from their male clients in 2011. Based on the importance of interdisciplinary work, described by the biopsychosocial model, the authors recommend recruitment of different professional groups, and the importance of maintaining the interests of psychologists and physicians and other experienced professionals in the field of sexology in Norway.

Alterações miofuncionais em adultos e idosos usuários de prótese dentária

Objetivo: Descrever os aspectos miofuncionais orais dos indivíduos adultos e idosos usuários de próteses dentárias. Materiais e métodos: Os sujeitos foram divididos em seis grupos de acordo com o tipo de prótese dentária. Os instrumentos para a coleta dos dados foram anamnese com dados sociodemográficos e avaliação fonoaudiológica através do protocolo de Avaliação Miofuncional Oral. Resultados: Participaram dessa pesquisa 41 usuários de prótese dentária. Com relação às alterações do sistema estomatognático foi percebido corte do alimento alterado em 42% dos usuários e em 20% dos não usuários de prótese. Quanto ao tipo de mastigação encontramos mastigação unilateral em 41% dos usuários de prótese dentária e em 36,36% dos não usuários de prótese dentária. A alteração de deglutição foi encontrada em 70% dos usuários de prótese dentária e em 66,6% dos não usuários. Apenas o grupo cinco composto por usuários de prótese superior e inferior apresentou um tempo mastigatório de 9 seg. maior do que o encontrado na literatura e do que os demais grupos do estudo. Dentre os usuários de prótese dentária 17,07% apresentaram alteração de fala e dentre os não usuários de prótese dentária ninguém apresentou alteração de fala. Conclusão: Com os resultados encontrados percebemos que existem modificações estruturais e funcionais do sistema estomatognático decorrentes do uso da prótese dentária removível, o que demonstra a importância de um trabalho interdisciplinar entre a fonoaudiologia e a odontologia na adaptação das próteses dentárias, propiciando uma adaptação mais rápida e eficaz, minimizando os prejuízos das funções estomatognáticas e da qualidade de vida.

Interdisciplinaridade no ensino superior: análise da percepção de professores de controladoria em cursos de ciências contábeis na cidade de São Paulo

Este estudo buscou conhecer, analisar e descrever a percepção de professores da disciplina de Controladoria em cursos de Ciências Contábeis em Instituições de Ensino Superior - IES - na cidade de São Paulo, sobre a interdisciplinaridade e sua importância na formação dos contadores. É uma pesquisa descritiva-qualitativa, com dados obtidos em entrevistas com sete professores de quatro IES. Verificou-se que a interdisciplinaridade não é adotada de forma explícita no curso e nem nas práticas de seus atores; porém, os docentes percebem sua importância para a prática pedagógica, a melhoria da qualidade de ensino e a formação discente. As falas revelaram trocas informais de ideias e de experiências de ensino no contexto universitário. Os professores mostraram-se preocupados em se inteirar do conjunto de disciplinas, mas mostraram pouco compromisso com uma integração mais planejada e uma prática de ensino compartilhada, tendo o Projeto Político Pedagógico - PPP - como o lócus prático no curso. A interdisciplinaridade é mais pensada e falada do que vivenciada. Conclui-se que, embora os professores sejam sensíveis à importância da interdisciplinaridade na formação dos futuros contadores, persiste uma distância entre o falado, o pensado e o efetivamente praticado no contexto universitário.

Anquilose temporomandibular bilateral: aspectos fonoaudiológicos e procedimentos clinidos

OBJETIVO: apresentar uma proposta terapêutica miofuncional orofacial, os procedimentos utilizados e resultados em caso de anquilose temporomandibular bilateral, buscando ressaltar a importância do trabalho interdisciplinar e a contribuição da fonoaudiologia para a reabilitação do sistema estomatognático nesses casos. MÉTODOS: relato de caso de paciente adulto, gênero masculino, encaminhado para avaliação e procedimentos fonoaudiológicos após três meses da realização de cirurgia articular, tendo como queixa principal grande restrição na abertura da boca. Na avaliação fonoaudiológica foi constatado: abertura da boca máxima em 25 mm, ausência de movimentos de lateralidade e de protrusiva, mordida aberta anterior em 8 mm, dor constante em região temporal, dificuldade para realizar mastigação, deglutição, articulação da fala. Constou dos objetivos terapêuticos: estimular e possibilitar a execução de movimentos mandibulares minimizando progressão de tecido cicatricial restritivo e reabilitação miofuncional. Procedimentos quanto ao aumento da amplitude através de relaxamentos, alongamentos, massagens, movimentos isotônicos, isométricos, isocinéticos e manobras específicas foram essenciais para estabilizar a abertura da boca, liberar os movimentos mandibulares e coordená-los, melhorando a funcionalidade do sistema estomatognático. RESULTADOS: após 24 sessões: ganho de 16 mm na abertura passando para 41 mm; redução da mordida aberta anterior para 4 mm, melhora da higiene oral, da articulação da fala, das condições alimentares com ganho de força mastigatória e redução dos mecanismos compensatórios; eliminação da dor em região temporal, além de melhora na estética facial. CONCLUSÃO: a terapêutica fonoaudiológica miofuncional orofacial mostrou-se eficiente em adulto com anquilose temporomandibular bilateral pós-cirúrgico, com estabilidade dos resultados mantida segundo controle anual.
