How Were Palliative Care Assessments Performed by Students During a Clinical Nursing Experience? A Study in Interpretive Phenomenology Analysis.

There has been limited investigation into nursing students' experiences of carrying out comprehensive assessments. Consequently, there is a need to explore the most effective and efficient assessment approach for students conducting palliative assessments for patients. This study aimed to investigate nursing students' experiences of performing palliative assessments while on clinical placement in a hospital. This research was conducted in West Kalimantan, Indonesia. Eight nursing students participated in semi-structured interviews utilising open-ended questions, generating 10 audio recordings. This qualitative study applied interpretative phenomenology analysis, with data analysed thematically. The study identified eight substantial themes that illustrate the experiences of nursing students in palliative care assessment: Upgrading assessment skills, Contributing influences in the assessment process, The way the patient responds to the assessment, Replenishment of data, The importance of family involvement, Emerging issues in the assessment process, Approaches to assessment and Refining the assessment process. The study enhances comprehension of how students surmount assessment challenges. The findings present a potential guide for future research on assessing the effectiveness of palliative care instruments employed by nurses to enhance comprehensive holistic assessments for patients.

From the Intensive Care Unit to Recovery: Managing Post-intensive Care Syndrome in Critically Ill Patients.

Post-intensive care syndrome (PICS) is the term used to describe the decline in the physical, cognitive, and/or mental condition of individuals who have been discharged from the intensive care unit (ICU). This complication could result in a significant reduction in quality of life, with some patients experiencing symptoms of prolonged weakness, depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Intensive care advancement over the years has resulted in an increase in ICU survival rates and a proportional increase in PICS, creating a need for more in-depth research into the prevention and management of the disease. Hence, this study aims to examine the present body of literature on PICS, encompassing its underlying physiological processes and elements that contribute to its development, methods for evaluating and diagnosing the condition, current treatment choices as well as potential new approaches, and the constraints in managing PICS and the necessity for further investigation. In this article, studies were compiled from several databases, including, but not limited to, Google Scholar, PubMed, and Cochrane Library. These studies were reviewed, and their data were used to highlight important aspects regarding the efficacy of current PICS screening tools, the optimization and limitations of both pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic treatment methods, and the feasibility and safety of emerging treatments and technologies. The major conclusions of this review were centered around the need for multidisciplinary management of PICS. From pharmacological management using analgesia to non-pharmacological management using early mobilization and exercise therapy, the effective treatment of PICS requires a multifaceted approach. Patient follow-up and its importance were touched upon, including strategies and policies to bolster proper follow-up, thereby increasing favorable outcomes. Lastly, the importance of family involvement and the increased need for research into this topic were highlighted.

FAMILY INVOLVEMENT IN EDUCATION OF SPECIAL NEEDS STUDENTS: A SYSTEMATIC LITERATURE REVIEW

Family involvement is an essential element in the education concerning special needs students, and this systematic literature review is focused on investigating its significance and impact. It investigates the factors and elements that influence family involvement, its impact on student outcomes, and strategies for bolstering collaboration between families and educational institutions. While the importance of family involvement is widely recognized, challenges and knowledge gaps remain regarding its best practices and effects. The study utilized the PRISMA approach, conducting a systematic review by scouring academic databases and journals for pertinent articles published within the last five years. The systematic search employed academic databases like Scopus and Web Of Science. After rigorous searching, the final dataset comprised (n=24) studies. Three core themes emerged from this approach: Teacher-Parent Collaboration, Barriers and Challenges, and Effects on the Achievement of Students. The review underscores essential components of family involvement, including communication, collaboration, shared decision-making, and parent-teacher partnerships. It provides an in-depth exploration of how family engagement positively affects students' academic and socio-emotional development while also shedding light on the obstacles and hindrances that can disrupt productive family-school collaborations. In conclusion, family involvement plays a pivotal role in the education of special needs students, significantly contributing to their holistic development. This review offers valuable insights for policymakers, educators, and researchers to further fortify family involvement in special education.

Attitude of Indian nurses towards importance of families in nursing care: A cross-sectional study.

To evaluate the attitudes of Indian nurses towards the importance of family involvement in nursing care and the association between nurse attitudes and sociodemographic characteristics. Involving the family in the care process is crucial for delivering family- and patient-centred care and ensuring the best possible patient outcomes. Nevertheless, published literature revealed that the nurses may lack clarity regarding the role of family members in the patient's care, which in turn hinders families' participation in care. Cross-sectional descriptive study. The STROBE checklist was used to report the present study. A total of 203 Nurses participated in a prospective cross-sectional study between May 2022 and August 2022. They were recruited through convenience sampling from two tertiary care centres in India. A two-part questionnaire was used to gather the data; the first section contained questions for gathering sociodemographic information, and the second part contained the standardized FINC-NA scale. The mean age of the nurses was (28.08 ± 4.722) years, and their median professional experience was 2.5 (1-5.5) years. Nurses' attitude regarding family's importance in patient care was found to be significantly associated (p ≤ .05) with education level, marital status, religion and hometown region. In several items Indian nurses have positive attitudes towards family involvement in care but some of the lower scoring items can present opportunities for focused improvement. Continuing development programmes about family-centered care can constitute important strategies to improve the positive attitudes of nurses towards families in practice. PARENT INVOLVEMENT IN PRE-SCHOOLS: BARRIERS AND OPPORTUNITIES

Family involvement promotes safety, security, and well-being of children and families. When families are involved, children understand that their families are valued. The objectives of this research paper were to study the factors influencing family involvement, ways in which pre-schools involve families, means of communication pre-schools use with families, barriers to family involvement and how they could be reduced. 12 pre-schools participated in this study. Self-structured questionnaire was used to get information on the various aspects of family involvement in the school. Results indicate that socio-economic background of the teachers and family, student-teacher ratio, approach to discipline, number of family contacts by the teacher are some of the factors influencing family involvement. The school involves the family by the teachers taking lead in developing positive parent-teacher relationship; communicating often about the need for and importance of family involvement, accommodation of family needs, show case what students are learning and accomplishing, create opportunities to connect, plan events and workshops that bring families into school and assign homework that requires family participation. The pre-school supervisors felt that specific budget allocations would help enhance family involvement in pre-schools. This chapter discuses need to enhance families as partners in pre-schools so as to find ways to build relationships between home, school and early childhood settings that are respectful, responsive and reciprocal by nature.

Investigation of School Perception and Participation of Families Whose Children Receive Special Education and General Education

ABSTRACTFamily participation is the cooperation of the family with the school and the active contribution of the family in the education process of the child. The importance of family involvement is not limited to academic success. Families' participation in activities organized at school, their participation in parent meetings, and their support for school social activities also contribute positively to the social and emotional development of the child. Such activities make the child feel more secure at school and create a positive perception of the school. Parent involvement also improves the child's ability to discipline and obey rules at school. Modeling the behaviors by school rules and disciplinary policies facilitates the child's adoption of these behaviors and adaptation to school rules. In this study, the Family School Perception and Participation scale, which takes into account the parents of SEN and normal students of all ages and all levels, was applied to the parents. So, it is a quantitative study using a graded 5 Likert-type scale. A total of 366 parents, including 284 mothers and 82 fathers, participated in the study. According to the results, there is a significant difference between the scale scores of the families whose children receive special education and whose children continue to normal education. Furthermore, on the parent development and student development sub-dimensions, there was a significant difference between families whose children receive special education and whose children continue to normal education. However, on the parent involvement and school perception sub-dimensions, there was no significant difference between families' scale scores.Keywords: school perception, school participation, families, special education needs, normal development

Factors associated with attitudes of mental health nurses towards the importance of families in mental health nursing care.

Family involvement in mental healthcare is a key ingredient in the recovery of patients with mental illness. Research on the attitudes of mental health nurses regarding family involvement in mental healthcare remains limited. This study aimed to examine factors that affect the attitudes of mental health nurses towards the importance of family involvement in mental health nursing care. A descriptive, correlational study with a cross-sectional design was conducted with 162 mental health nurses at two psychiatric hospitals in Taiwan. Descriptive statistics, independent t-tests, one-way analysis of variance, and stepwise multiple linear regression analyses were applied to analyse data. Mental health nurses generally demonstrated positive attitudes towards incorporating families into nursing care. Older age, more clinical experiences in mental healthcare, and workplace (such as working in chronic psychiatric inpatient wards) were found to be key factors for mental health nurses' attitudes. Particularly, greater competence in working with families and job satisfaction were the most significant factors associated with positive attitudes of mental health nurses towards involving families as important in nursing care. Insight into correlates of mental health nurses' attitudes towards the importance of focusing on families in care is pivotal for targeted interventions to improve nurses' attitudes towards families and, thus, implement family engagement in mental healthcare practices.

The symphony of open-heart surgical care: A mixed-methods study about interprofessional attitudes towards family involvement

ABSTRACT Purpose The overall aim of this study was to describe the attitudes towards family involvement in care held by nurses and medical doctors working in open-heart surgical care and the factors influencing these attitudes. Methods Mixed-methods convergent parallel design. A web-based survey was completed by nurses (n = 267) using the Families’ Importance in Nursing Care-Nurses Attitudes (FINC-NA) instrument and two open-ended questions, generating one quantitative and one qualitative dataset. Qualitative interviews with medical doctors (n = 20) were conducted in parallel, generating another qualitative dataset. Data were analysed separately according to each paradigm and then merged into mixed-methods concepts. Meta-inferences of these concepts were discussed. Results The nurses reported positive attitudes in general. The two qualitative datasets from nurses and medical doctors resulted in the identification of seven generic categories. The main mixed-methods finding was the attitude that the importance of family involvement in care depends on the situation. Conclusions The dependence of family involvement on the situation may be due to the patient’s and family’s unique needs. If professionals’ attitudes rather than the family’s needs and preferences determine how the family is involved, care runs the risk of being unequal.

Family Intervention in the Treatment of Female Juvenile Delinquency: A Qualitative Study in the Collectivist Society of Malaysia

Aims: The current study explores the benefits of a family intervention program on families and their adolescent children who were convicted as juveniles. Adolescents and their families shared their experiences in joining the program, especially the improvement they made while in the program. Demographics: Research participants included eight adolescents, six mothers, and two fathers. Settings: The program took place in Malaysia's adolescents’ rehabilitation center. Methodology: Data were collected through an in-depth interview with participants. Analysis: Thematic analysis was used to analyze the data. Findings: Findings revealed five main themes: (1) awareness and insight; (2) Understanding risk and protective factors of delinquency; (3) the opportunity to learn roles in the family; (4) Learning to improve communication skills; and (5) Learning to forgive. Implications: The study provides insight into the importance of family involvement in delinquent adolescents’ rehabilitation and the need to consider the family system approach in counseling delinquent adolescents.

Can families help veterans get more from PTSD treatment? A randomized clinical trial examining Prolonged Exposure with and without family involvement

BackgroundPosttraumatic stress disorder occurs in as many as one in five combat veterans and is associated with a host of negative, long-term consequences to the individual, their families, and society at large. Trauma-focused treatments, such as Prolonged Exposure, result in clinically significant symptom relief for many. Adherence to these treatments (i.e., session attendance and homework compliance) is vital to ensuring recovery but can be challenging for patients. Engaging families in veterans’ treatment could prove to be an effective strategy for promoting treatment adherence while also addressing long-standing calls for better family inclusion in treatment for posttraumatic stress disorder. This paper describes the methods of a pragmatic randomized controlled trial designed to evaluate if family inclusion in Prolonged Exposure can improve treatment adherence.MethodsOne hundred fifty-six veterans, with clinically significant symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder, will be randomized to receive either standard Prolonged Exposure or Prolonged Exposure enhanced through family inclusion (Family-Supported Prolonged Exposure) across three different VA facilities. Our primary outcomes are session attendance and homework compliance. Secondary outcomes include posttraumatic stress disorder symptom severity, depression, quality of life, and relationship functioning. The study includes a concurrent process evaluation to identify potential implementation facilitators and barriers to family involvement in Prolonged Exposure within VA.DiscussionWhile the importance of family involvement in posttraumatic stress disorder treatment is non-controversial, there is no evidence base supporting best practices on how to integrate families into PE or any other individually focused trauma-focused treatments for posttraumatic stress disorder. This study is an important step in addressing this gap, contributing to the literature for both retention and family involvement in trauma-focused treatments.Trial registrationClinicalTrials.govNCT03256227. Engaging Community Partners to Understand and Respond to Substance Use and Addiction Crisis Facing Families in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan.

Substance use is a persisting health care crisis that has led to residents’ addiction to diverse substances in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan. This public health issue affects not only those with a substance use disorder but also those within their circle of family and friends. This paper aims to outline the community engagement processes that we undertook to identify community priorities for addressing the substance use and addiction issues facing them. We began the community engagement using a patient-oriented research process, which led to the development of a grant application. Following the awarding of this grant application by the Saskatchewan Health Research Foundation and Saskatchewan Centre for Patient-Oriented Research, we conducted interviews with family members affected by addiction in the city. The study provided us with significant insight into the impacts of substance use disorders on family members. The importance of collaboration among people with lived experience, health care providers, and community partners helped us to identify our research questions. Community members also actively participated in the data collection, analysis, and presentation of the findings where priorities for the interventions were identified. The conversations we had because of the community’s engagement and participation in the research process enhanced our understanding of the realities of caring for people with substance use disorders and the importance of family involvement throughout the process. We also learned lessons regarding community engagement and participation in research on a stigmatizing and complex topic.

Exploring Dementia Care in an Acute Care Setting: Perspectives of Social Workers and Nurses

Older adults can benefit from using patient portals. Little is known whether the perceptions and use of patient portals differ among diverse older adult populations. The aim of this study was to assess the difference in perceived usability of patient portals, self-efficacy for using patient portals, and patient portal use between two adult samples aged 65 years or older. One sample was recruited from a health care system, including hospitals and clinics (n = 174), and the other sample was recruited from nationwide communities (n = 126). Conducting a secondary data analysis using two survey datasets, this study performed a series of linear and ordinal logistic regression analyses. The health care system sample had a higher mean number of chronic diseases and proportion of recent hospitalization than the community sample. The health care system sample showed higher perceived usability, self-efficacy, and usage frequency of patient portals compared to the community sample. eHealth literacy was a significant predictor of perceived usability and self-efficacy. Perceived usability was another significant predictor of self-efficacy. Self-efficacy and health condition variables significantly predicted the more frequent use of patient portals. Compared to the health care system sample, the relationship between perceived usability and use of patient portals was stronger and significant in the community sample. These findings suggest that approaches for promoting patient portal use should consider personal characteristics and health conditions of diverse older adult populations. Future research needs to focus on assessing the impact of using patient portals on older adults’ health care outcomes.

Health Care Transition for Children with Medical Complexity: Challenges and Lessons Learned

BackgroundTransition from pediatric to adult health care is a pivotal process for young adults, especially those with complex medical needs. Despite advancements in the medical care provided to children with medical complexity (CMC), there is a lack of systematic approaches and guidance for patients and families transitioning from pediatric to adult health care. MethodsHealth care providers and nurse case managers in the Complex Care Program (CCP) evaluated health care transition practices prior to 2019, and initiated quality improvement efforts to standardize transition guidance, planning, and documentation from 2019 to 2020 within the CCP. FindingsChallenges identified with transitioning CMC include: 1) Varied approaches and timelines for health care providers, 2) Documentation in the EMR, and 3) Connecting to adult health care systems. Throughout this work, CCP staff have learned lessons to effectively transition CMC. Themes included: 1) Transition from a pediatric to an adult primary care provider first, 2) Start transition conversations early, 3) Identify a universal location to document transition planning, and 4) Importance of family involvement. Implications for practiceTo effectively transition CMC, health care staff must start conversations early, engaging all primary and specialty providers, patients, and families to create safe transition plans.

Development of Chinese mental health first aid guidelines for problem drinking: a Delphi expert consensus study

BackgroundAlcohol use disorders have become the second leading cause of death for mental and substance use disorders in China. However, with early diagnosis and timely treatment, the burden can be mitigated. Family and friends of a person with alcohol use problems are well placed to recognize the signs, encourage professional help-seeking and help the person until treatment is received. We aimed to use the Delphi consensus methodology to develop guidelines about how members of the public can provide this “mental health first aid” to someone with problem drinking in China.MethodsA Chinese-language questionnaire was developed, comprising statements that were endorsed for inclusion in the English-language problem drinking first aid guidelines for high-income countries. Participants were also encouraged to suggest new statements. These statements were evaluated by two Chinese expert panels – a professional panel and a lived experience panel – on how important they believed each statement was for members of the public providing mental health first aid to a person with problem drinking in China. Three survey rounds were conducted. To be included in the final guidelines, statements had to receive a “very important” or “important” rating from at least 80% of participants from each of the panels.ResultsThe majority of statements were rated in the first survey round by 30 mental health professionals and 25 lived experience panel members. One hundred and eighty-one statements met the inclusion criteria and were used to form the guidelines. Compared to the English-language guidelines, the importance of family involvement and mutual support were highlighted by both Chinese expert panels, while a number of statements relating to low-risk drinking were rejected by the lived experience panel.ConclusionsThe Chinese-language problem drinking first aid guidelines cover a variety of first aid strategies that members of the public can use when providing initial help to a person with problem drinking, such as how to communicate with the person and what to do if the person is intoxicated. These guidelines will be used as a stand-alone document will also inform the content of Mental Health First Aid training in China.

Study on knowledge and attitude of local students and students in hostel /PG (18-29 years) living in Vadodara city on home-based cooking practices and its impact on nutrient intake

The presented study had a focus on knowledge and attitude of home and hostel-based cooking practices in students aged 18-29 years on how the knowledge of cooking had an impact on the eating habits and the importance of family involvement in the same. Subjects were selected using snowball sampling technique. Important findings of the study were, majority of the subjects who knew how to cook were females in both home (67.16%) and hostel-based (69.23%) settings. Taste of the food (38%) followed by other reasons like feasibility, interest, knowledge etc. (32.50%) and lack of time (25%) were the major factors which facilitated ordering food from outside. The results also showed that, full meals were preferred by majority (49%) followed by ready to eat (25%) and the least preferred were snacks (17.50%) for hostel-based students while ordering outside food. For students staying at home, majority of the subjects (98.50%) liked the taste of home-made and they cooked a perfect meal when they were hungry. Ordering food from outside was least preferred (16.50%). Students showed positive attitude towards learning to cook and improving their basic cooking skills. Students showed positive attitude towards will to learn cooking, due to taste enhancement and healthier option of cooking by self.

The Perceptions of Nurses and Nursing Students Regarding Family Involvement in the Care of Hospitalized Adult Patients.

Over the past few decades, there have been concerns regarding the humanization of healthcare and the involvement of family members in patients’ hospital care. The attitudes of hospitals toward welcoming families in this respect have improved. In Arab culture, the main core of society is considered to be the family, not the individual. The objective behind involving family in patient care is to meet patients’ support needs. Consequently, this involvement affects nurses and their attitudes toward the importance of family involvement in patient care. Objectives: To describe nurses’ and nursing students’ perceptions of family involvement in the care of hospitalized adult patients in Saudi Arabia. Design: This study used a quantitative descriptive cross-sectional design. The data were collected using a convenience sampling survey via social media. Results: A total of 270 participants (staff and students) took part in this study, including 232 (85.9%) females and 38 (14.1%) males. Moreover, a high percentage of participants (78.8%) acknowledged that family presence strongly affected the improvement of the patient’s condition. However, 69.3% of participants thought that involving family members during special care processes or cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) would be traumatizing for these individuals. Moreover, there was a significant diffidence between the attitudes of the nurses and nursing students toward family involvement and the number of years of employment (F = 3.60, p < 0.05). On the contrary, there were insignificant differences between the attitudes of the nurses and nursing students toward family involvement and their gender, nationality, age, education level, and years of work experience in Saudi Arabia (p > 0.05). Furthermore, the regression analysis showed a significant negative correlation between nurses’ years of employment and their support of family involvement in patient care (ß = −0.20, SE = 0.08, t = −2.70, p = 0.01). Conclusions: Nurses with more experience showed no support for family involvement in patient care. We have to consider the clinical barriers that affect nurses’ support for family involvement in patient-centered care, such as hospital polices, guidelines, and the model used for family-centered care integration in the hospital system to facilitate the interaction between healthcare providers and family members.

Assessing Caregiver Stress and Coping at Time of Autism Spectrum Disorder Diagnosis

Research and practice emphasize the importance of family involvement in early intervention for children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). However, in order to address the unique and diverse challenges of families, support and resources may need to be prescribed on a case-by-case basis. This article suggests ways early intervention programs can assess parent stress, self-efficacy and disability specific knowledge at time of ASD diagnosis to inform family centered intervention programs with attention to individualized support for children with ASD and their families. A variety of assessment tools are provided with rationale for their use of results to inform program intervention and service plans for families of young children with ASD.

The importance of families in nursing care: attitudes of nurses in the Netherlands

Positive attitudes towards family involvement in nursing care are essential for improving the involvement of and collaboration with patients' families. The aim of this study is to explore nurses' attitudes towards the importance of families in nursing care. Using a cross-sectional design, hospital and homecare nurses completed the Families Importance to Nursing Care (FINC-NA) scale, Dutch language version, consisting of four subscales. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics and regression analyses. A total of 426 hospital and homecare nurses were eligible for analysis (mean (SD) age 42 years (13), 93% female). The mean (SD) attitude of nurses was 63.8 (12) (100-point scale) on the FINC-NA. Less than half of the nurses (44%) considered family as a collaboration partner, and 37% of nurses stated that families should be invited to actively participate in planning patient care. The nurses' attitudes were explained by years of work experience in nursing, work setting and existing policy regarding families in patient care. This study identifies areas of improvement regarding to nurses' attitudes towards the importance of families in nursing care in order to establish a more family-focused approach in nursing care. Nursing policies should facilitate working with families as part of regular nursing processes. Furthermore, the importance of family involvement in care should be an explicit matter of concern for nursing educational institutions and for policy making within healthcare organisations.

Development of Chinese mental health first aid guidelines for psychosis: a Delphi expert consensus study

BackgroundFamily and friends of a person developing a mental illness or in a mental health crisis can help the person until treatment is received or the crisis resolves. Guidelines for providing this ‘mental health first aid’ have been developed and disseminated in high-income countries. However, they may not be appropriate for use in China due to cultural and health care system differences. The aim of this study was to use the Delphi expert consensus method to develop culturally appropriate guidelines for a member of the public providing mental health first aid to someone with psychosis in mainland China.MethodsA Chinese-language survey, comprising statements about how to provide mental health first aid to a person with psychosis, was developed. This was based on the endorsed items from the first round of the English-language questionnaire for high-income countries. These statements were rated by two expert panels from mainland China – a mental health professional panel (N = 31) and a lived experience panel (N = 41) – on how important they believed each statement was for a member of the public providing first aid to a person with psychosis in China. There were three Delphi rounds, with experts able to suggest additional items in Round 1. Items had to have at least 80% endorsement from both panels for inclusion.ResultsOut of 208 statements, 207 were endorsed for inclusion in the Chinese-language guidelines. Eight new statements were also included. Compared to the English-language guidelines, the importance of family involvement was emphasized in the development of the Chinese-language guidelines.ConclusionsWhile many of the actions in the English-language guidelines were endorsed by Chinese participants, a number of additional items point to the importance of developing culturally appropriate mental health first aid guidelines. These guidelines will form the basis for the development of Chinese Mental Health First Aid course aiming at training members of the public on how to provide first aid to someone with a mental health problem.

Lived Experience: Deaf Professionals' Stories of Resilience and Risks.

Navigating a phonocentric and audistic society can be challenging for Deaf people, yet some of them adapt and exhibit resilience. Although there is a plethora of resilience studies, Deaf people's narratives are largely unexplored. This phenomenological study explored from a Deaf cultural-linguistic lens 10 Deaf professionals who use American Sign Language in the United States and their observation of other Deaf people's lived experience. The study focused particularly on their experiences in overcoming significant barriers in their lives and the factors that strengthen Deaf people's resilience. Based on qualitative data gathered from narrative interviews, three main themes emerged from this study: (a) Barriers to Incidental Learning: The Dinner Table Syndrome; (b) Importance of Family Involvement; and (c) Protective Role of the Deaf Community as a Second Family. The stories in this study highlight how Deaf professionals and other Deaf people navigate barriers and manifest resilience.
