Digital literacy for children: An overview

Digital technologies have become a part of everyday life, taking center stage. It has dominated people's lives and changed the way they live life. The task of protecting and raising awareness of children from the negative effects of the digital age, which especially affects the psychological, physical, social and cognitive development of children, is again on the family, school and society. For this reason, this study aims to define the concept of digital literacy for today's children by presenting a different perspective and inspiring new research to be conducted. In the study, the literature review model, one of the qualitative research methods, was used. Articles, theses, dissertations, professional publications, research and research reports on the subject were examined. In the findings section of the study, the importance of the child and the family raising him/her, the digital age and its impact on education, the importance of digital literacy in education, and the advantages and disadvantages of digital literacy are discussed. In conclusion, in order to shape the future of societies with solid foundations, it is very important to teach children digital literacy skills, which also means understanding technology and using it appropriately, in the light of customs and traditions.

Low-income, yet Highly Literate? The Future Towards Developing a ‘Super Smart Society’

The low-income community is generally associated with a lower level of education, poor quality housing, unemployment, and financial debt. As digital technologies become increasingly integrated into society, this study aims to re-examine the understanding of advertising literacy within low-income communities by introducing digital literacy as a new dimension. The focus is on assessing their awareness of visual pollutants, specifically fly-poster, in Malaysia. The study involved 574 respondents from five Public Housing Programs (PHP) to represent the distribution of the low-income community. The study combined media literacy theory and the model of advertising literacy. Results indicated that individuals in the low-income community exhibit high advertising literacy influenced by digital technological factors, empowering them to make informed decisions amidst the deluge of advertisements. Despite this, the challenge of visual pollutants remains unresolved due to the insufficient efficacy of collective actions by the community, hindering efforts to mitigate their impact on the local environment. To embrace the future of a 'super smart society,' the low-income community must collectively adapt and adopt digital technologies. This study contributes to the discourse on the importance of digital literacy and collaborative efforts in shaping an intelligent society, often referred to as Society 5.0 or the 'super smart society.' Recalibrating the scope of financial inclusion through financial technologies in the digital age: the role of digital literacy as a moderator in rural Uganda

PurposeThe main purpose of this study is to test for the interaction effect of digital literacy in the relationship between financial technologies (FinTechs) of biometrics and mobile money and digital financial inclusion among the unbanked poor women, youth and persons with disabilities (PWDs) in rural Uganda.Design/methodology/approachCovariance-based structural equation modeling was used to construct the interaction effect using data collected from the unbanked poor women, youth and PWDs located in the four regions in Uganda as prescribed by Hair et al. (2022).FindingsThe findings from this study are threefold: first; the results revealed a positive interaction effect of digital literacy between FinTechs of biometrics and mobile money and digital financial inclusion. Second; the results also confirmed that biometrics identification positively promotes digital financial inclusion. Lastly; the results showed that mobile money positively promotes digital financial inclusion. A combination of FinTechs of biometrics and mobile money together with digital literacy explain 29% variation in digital financial inclusion among the unbanked poor women, youth and PWDs in rural Uganda.Research limitations/implicationsThe data for this study were collected mainly from the unbanked poor women, youth and PWDs. Further studies may look at data from other sections of the vulnerable population in under developed financial markets. Additionally, the data for this study were collected only from Uganda as a developing country. Thus, more data may be obtained from other developing countries to draw conclusive and generalized empirical evidence. Besides, the current study used cross sectional design to collect the data. Therefore, future studies may adopt longitudinal research design to investigate the impact of FinTechs on digital financial inclusion in the presence of digital literacy across different time range.Practical implicationsThe governments in developing countries like Uganda should support women, youth, PWDs and other equally vulnerable groups, especially in the rural communities to understand and use FinTechs. This can be achieved through digital literacy that can help them to embrace digital financial services and competently navigate and perform digital transactions over digital platforms like mobile money without making errors. Besides, governments in developing countries like Uganda can use this finding to advocate for the design of appropriate digital infrastructures to reach remote areas and ensure “last mile connectivity for digital financial services' users.” The use of off-line solutions can complement the absence or loss of on-line network connectivity for biometrics and mobile money to close the huge digital divide gap in rural areas. This can scale-up access to and use of financial services by the unbanked rural population.Originality/valueThis paper sheds more light on the importance of digital literacy in the ever complex and dynamic global FinTech ecosystem in the presence of rampant cyber risks. To the best of the authors' knowledge, limited studies currently exist that integrate digital literacy as a moderator in the relationship between FinTechs and digital financial inclusion, especially among vulnerable groups in under-developed digital financial markets in developing countries. This is the novelty of the paper with data obtained from the unbanked poor women, youth and PWDs in rural Uganda.

The findings reveal several key themes, including the integration of digital technologies into teaching and learning, the use of data analytics for personalized learning experiences, the importance of digital literacy and skills development, the role of artificial intelligence and machine learning in education, and the impact of digital transformation on educational equity and access. Furthermore, this article discusses the challenges and opportunities associated with digital transformation in education, such as the digital divide, privacy concerns, and the need for professional development for educators. By synthesizing existing literature and research, this study provides insights into the current state of digital transformation in education and offers recommendations for policymakers, educators, and stakeholders to navigate and leverage the potential of digital technologies in shaping the future of education.

The importance of digital literacy in today's digital era and the need for continued investment in programmes to help women become more digitally literate. Using a quasi-experimental design, this study used pre-test and post-test data to measure awareness and combat hoaxes. Data was collected from primary and secondary sources, including surveys and literature reviews. The results showed an improvement in literacy and this reflected the participants' understanding and application of digital literacy skills, including social media, blogs, videos, images and editing tools. A comparison between the pre and post-test results and the change in error rates can give an idea of the increase or decrease in digital literacy skills after the programme.

Pelatihan dan Pendampingan Penggunaan Liveworksheets dalam Pembuatan Lembar Kerja Peserta Didik bagi MGMP Madrasah Tsanawiyah Matematika Rayon 2 Se-Kota Jambi

The purpose of this Community Service (PkM) activity is to maximize the use of the Liveworkssheets platform. In carrying out service, the method used is Asset Based Community-driven Development. The training and mentoring process begins with the first stage being pre-implementation, the second stage is the implementation of research, and the third stage is research evaluation which is divided into five stages (Define, Discovery, Dream, Design, and Deliver or Destiny). This activity was attended by 15 mathematics teachers who are members of the MGMP Mathematics MTs/SMP Rayon 2 Jambi City community. The results of the activities include: 1) Increased understanding from MGMP Mathematics MTs/SMP Rayon 2 Jambi City teachers about the importance of digital literacy. 2)Increased technical knowledge of participants from initially not knowing to knowing after getting training using the Liveworksheets platform. 3)Teachers are interested in using the liveworksheets platform when compiling questions for the purposes of midterm tests or end-of-semester tests because of the ease of compiling and checking students' answers.

The Importance of Digital Literacy in The Era of Society 5.0

The purpose of writing this article is to understand the importance of digital literacy in the era of society 5.0. The era of society 5.0 is a time when science and technology are used and utilized to facilitate people's lives. The method used in this study is a literature study. The data collection technique in this study is to collect information and data from various library materials such as books, articles, previous research, notes, and journals related to the application of digital literacy in the era of society 5.0. The results of data analysis show that one of the skills needed in the era of society 5.0 is digital literacy skills. Between the era of society 5.0 and digital literacy has the same goal in answering all the challenges of social life and improving decision-making skills The result of this writing is to provide an overview of the concept of the era of society 5.0 and information about the importance of digital literacy in the era of society 5.0.

The Importance of Digital Literacy in Geography Learning for Geography Education Students at Fish Unima

The formulation of the research problem is how digital literacy ability in geography learning for students majoring in geography education at FISH Unima. The study aimed to determine digital literacy abilities in geography learning for FISH Unima geography education students. In achieving these objectives, this research was carried out using qualitative research methods, and data collection techniques which included: observation, interviews, documentation, and triangulation. The research informants were FISH Unima geography education students. The stages of data analysis include data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing/verification. The results showed that results of the study showed that there were several digital literacy skills among students of FISH Unima geography education, namely: a) the ability to obtain various information needed in learning, b) the ability to use the internet, c) the ability to recognize computers as a means and technology in learning, d) the ability to use various digital media and e) the ability to understand sources as learning materials.

Analysis of Overcoming Cyberbullying through Digital Literacy Education

Understanding the use of technology is important, especially for the majority of children who are teenagers. Cyberbullying often becomes a scourge in itself when there is a lack of digital literacy education. This research aims to see the impact of strengthening and strengthening children's knowledge about the dangers of Cyberbullying as well as familiarizing the children with the importance of digital literacy in the Sidoarjo Orphanage. Descriptive qualitative research method with counseling stages regarding Cyberbullying, and digital literacy education which consists of collecting data through tests which will be carried out using perception questionnaires, and a pretest posttest at the end of the activity. In the research, the results showed that understanding cyberbullying and digital literacy education can improve the perception of children in orphanages regarding several events that will often be encountered in the environment. This is proven by the increase in children's knowledge regarding the impact of cyberbullying and digital literacy, which increased by 80 percent from a total of 14 children in orphanages through a perception test questionnaire.

The Role of Digital Literacy and Self Efficacy in Enhancing Students' Critical Thinking in Learning in the Digital Era

This research is motivated by the low critical thinking skills of students. The purpose of this research is to examine and analyze the role of digital literacy and self-efficacy in increasing students' critical thinking in the digital era. This research uses a quantitative approach with a survey method. The sampling technique used purposive sampling of 100 students. The instruments used are tests and questionnaires. The data analysis technique used is the classical assumption, correlation analysis, and multiple linear regression analysis including hypothesis testing T test, F test and R2 test. The results of this study show 1) Digital literacy has a positive and significant effect on students' critical thinking in the digital era, 2) Self-Efficacy has a positive and significant effect on students' critical thinking in the digital era, and 3) Digital literacy and self-efficacy have a positive and significant effect and are significant to students' critical thinking in the digital era. The findings of this study hint at the importance of digital literacy and self-efficacy in increasing students' critical thinking in the digital era.

NEW INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGIES (NTICS) IN EDUCATION

This article is the result of studies and research on the new information and communication technologies in education, the contribution and importance of digital literacy. It aims to open a discussion around digital literacy, in order to understand it better, and also to think about the different ways to incorporate the modalities of literacy into educational practices. The hypothesis that guides this investigation is that teachers do not yet have autonomy in the use of New Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs). This work disposed of the methodology the investigation on the bibliographic research, with basic strategic intention, descriptive objective, within a qualitative perspective when applying the hypothetical-deductive method. It is observed that there is still a lot of resistance of the teacher to develop active methodologies, mainly through remote teaching, with the emergence of the Coronavirus – COVID19 pandemic and the modifications related to teaching, numerous articles have been published, exposing the difficulties that people, although literate, suffer in the use of new technologies. The plans that began to be taught in virtual environments, have numerous resources to be used, allowing a greater diversity in the presentation of the programmatic content. Even so, access to such infrastructures provided through technologies becomes limited when both the teacher and the student do not have mastery of such tools.

Enhancing Digital Literacy Through English Language Teaching: A Needs Analysis for English Students at Muhammadiyah University of Mataram

The importance of digital literacy has grown significantly, making its integration into English language teaching (ELT) crucial. This study investigated the role of ELT in promoting digital literacy among English students at Muhammadiyah University of Mataram and identified their digital literacy needs. Using a mixed-methods research design, data were collected from students’ need through questionnaires and interviews, which assessed their digital literacy skills, technology use in ELT, and perceived needs for digital literacy development. The findings showed that students were interested in incorporating digital literacy into ELT and identified various digital tools, platforms, and skills they considered essential. Participants emphasized the importance of teacher guidance, language-specific digital resources, and training. The study recommends integrating digital literacy development into the ELT curriculum, providing accessible resources, and exploring further research opportunities. The results offer practical insights for language educators, policymakers, and researchers aiming to enhance digital literacy skills among English Department students through ELT.

Strategi Pengembangan Literasi Digital Santri Melalui Pers Mahrusy di Pondok Pesantren Lirboyo

Technology that is increasingly advanced, and continues to develop, make it possible to support and facilitate the wider internet network and media convergence. This certainly makes it easy for users to get information. Even the educational process has also morphed to adjust to developments in the learning process through various online/online media. This study aims to determine the strategy for developing students' digital literacy through the Mahrusy Press at the Lirboyo Islamic Boarding School HM Al Mahrusiyah. This is important, considering that students are often seen as traditional in modernity. This qualitative research method uses in-depth interview techniques in collecting data. The key informant is the General Manager of the Mahrusy Press with secondary data obtained from observation and documentation techniques. As a result, it is known that the strategy for developing student literacy used by Press Mahrusy so that it becomes one of the reference media for East Java is the holding of The Rules guidebook, giving affirmations on the importance of digital literacy, reading habits, holding Journalistic Korans, conducting literacy studies as a form of follow-up to journalism recitation, following contests or contests that hone the abilities of members, hold comparative studies, and always ask for guidance from active advisors to the Mahrusy Press. It is hoped that future researchers can dig deeper regarding each literacy development strategy or examine it with a different theory.

The Effect of Digital Transformation On The Revitalization of Msmes In Pandemi Time With Digital Literacy As An Intervening Variable (Case Study of Micro Enterprises in the City of Bukittinggi)

This study analyzes whether the application of digital transformation affects the revitalization of MSMEs during the pandemic and whether it can be mediated by digital literacy. Using a sample of 378 respondents from micro-sector MSMEs in Bukittinggi City in 2021, this study reveals that the application of digital transformation and digital literacy is positively related to the revitalization of MSMEs, which in this case uses business performance indicators to serve as a basis for determining the level of success. from the revitalization of SMEs. This finding offers empirical evidence about the importance of digital literacy in the relationship between implementing digital transformation and revitalizing MSMEs during the pandemic. This shows that the implementation of digital transformation will not succeed without an educational intermediary for digital technology itself. Furthermore, this study recommends strategies to improve the application of digital transformation for MSME business actors by increasing digital literacy of business actors

This paper delves into the transformative influence of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) tools in the context of Indian libraries, with a particular emphasis on two pioneering initiatives: the National Digital Library (NDL) and the National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning (NPTEL). These initiatives symbolize India's commitment to leveraging technology for democratizing access to knowledge and fostering educational excellence. By analyzing the evolution, scope, and implications of these projects, this study aims to provide insights into the broader role of ICT tools in reshaping the landscape of Indian libraries. The NDL, launched in 2016, emerges as a trailblazer in digital resource accessibility. With a diverse array of multimedia content available in multiple Indian languages, the NDL transcends linguistic barriers, making learning resources widely accessible. This initiative not only promotes open access to knowledge but also fosters a culture of continuous learning among learners of all backgrounds. Similarly, the NPTEL, established in 2003, plays a pivotal role in revolutionizing higher education by offering video lectures and course materials from renowned Indian institutions. This initiative democratizes quality education, bridging gaps and enhancing the learning experience for students across the nation. Furthermore, the paper explores related projects such as Shodhganga and Shodhgangotri, which focus on digitizing theses and promoting research visibility, and e-PG Pathshala, an e-content repository for postgraduate education. These projects collectively underline India's commitment to harnessing ICT tools for research dissemination and enriching educational resources. While celebrating the achievements of these initiatives, the study also delves into challenges such as digital divide issues, privacy concerns, and the importance of digital literacy. By analyzing the successes and challenges of these initiatives, this paper offers insights into the broader implications of ICT integration in Indian libraries and their pivotal role in shaping a knowledge-driven future. Ultimately, it underscores how ICT tools, as exemplified by NDL, NPTEL, and related projects, have become transformative agents in empowering Indian libraries to foster inclusivity, enhance educational access, and drive innovation.

Improving Digital Literacy Skills for Youth Karang Taruna, Cigadung Village, Cibeunying Kaler District, Bandung City

Based on the results of the situation analysis, there are several problems with Youth Karang Taruna, Cigadung Village, Cibeunying Kaler District, Bandung City, namely: Low knowledge and understanding of digital literacy and low Digital Literacy Ability to become Smart Vlogers in order to become a productive generation. The purpose of this community service activity is to increase knowledge, understanding and ability about the Importance of Digital Literacy through Creativity Development to become a Smart Vloger as well as strengthening community social institutions in preventing online violence and cyber crime in people's lives, creating independence and a productive generation. The methods used are socialization and counseling, training, mentoring, and technical guidance. As a result of PKM activities, it is hoped that the Youth Karang Taruna, Cigadung Village, Cibeunying Kaler District, Bandung City will know, understand digital literacy, and be able to use internet digital media literacy skills safely in updating writing on the platforms they created to become Smart Vlogers to strengthen institutions. society in preventing online violence and cyber crime in people's lives, creating independence and a productive generation.

THE EFFECT OF DIGITAL LITERACY ON ENHANCING SELF-REGULATION IN TRAINING READING SKILLS AMONG EFL STUDENTS

In the digital age, the importance of digital literacy is paramount, especially for EFL students who increasingly depend on digital resources to enhance their language skills. The study examines how digital literacy enables students to engage in self-paced learning, access a diverse range of online resources, and utilize digital tools and platforms for personalized reading practice. The paper argues that digital literacy significantly contributes to self-regulation by allowing students to track their progress, set reading goals, and actively engage in reading comprehension through interactive online activities. These digital competencies also enable students to critically evaluate and analyze digital texts, which is essential for developing effective reading strategies. Moreover, improved digital literacy skills are shown to aid EFL students in regulating their reading habits and managing their time more effectively. Overall, the findings highlight the essential role of digital literacy in enhancing self-regulation among EFL students, particularly in the development of reading skills. By providing access to various digital tools and platforms, digital literacy not only facilitates personalized and self-regulated learning but also empowers students to take control of their educational journey. The paper concludes that fostering digital literacy is crucial in the current educational landscape, where digital tools are integral to language learning and skill development.

Development of CNN-Based Data Crawler to Support Learning Block Programming

Along with the importance of digital literacy, the need for SW(Software) education is steadily emerging. Programming education in public education targets a variety of learners from elementary school to high school. This study was conducted for the purpose of judging the proficiency of low school-age learners in programming education. To achieve the goal, a tool to collect data on the entire programming learning process was developed, and a machine learning model was implemented to judge the proficiency of learners based on the collected data. As a result of determining the proficiency of 20 learners, the model developed through this study showed an average accuracy of approximately 75%. Through the development of programming-related data collection tools and programming proficiency judging models for low school-age learners, this study is meaningful in that it presents basic data for providing learner-tailored feedback.

The Role of Teachers in the Application of Digital Literacy to Create a Digital Literate Generation

Entering the era of the industrial revolution 4.0, especially the world of education, schools, teachers and students live in an advanced digital world. In this regard, the existence and role of teachers is very important for digital literacy. In today's conditions, the role of the teacher is very necessary, as it is known that the content on the internet is almost unlimited with a variety of information with an abundance of volume, while teachers and parents cannot always control internet access by students at all times. This study aims to answer the question of how digital literacy is implemented in schools and what are the obstacles faced by teachers in teaching digital literacy. This is a qualitative research with a phenomenological approach. Data collection was obtained from in-depth interviews with 20 teachers. This research shows that there are still many teachers who have not had the opportunity to take part in training related to digital literacy, both organised by the government and the private sector. Therefore, teachers are expected to be proactive in seeking information related to digital literacy from various sources. This study also proves that socialisation related to digital literacy is still very lacking. The government and related parties must be more intensive in conducting socialisation so that the community, especially parents, also understands the importance of digital literacy.
