Synthesis and Characterization of Zirconium Oxide (ZrO2) Films on AA5052 and Glass substrates

Aluminum alloy has gained lot of importance in Aerospace Industries and Engineering applications because of its strength, high resistance to heat, light weight and durability. In this paper we made an attempt to improve the AA5052 substrates properties by coating Zirconium Oxide (ZrO2) by Sol-Gel Method. Glass substrates were also coated with Zirconium Oxide (ZrO2) coating. The coated AA5052 and glass substrates will be annealed to check the thermal resistance for various time of thermal rig test. Micro crystalline properties and formation of ZrO2 of the coated film is evaluated for surface morphological studies by using Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and the elemental composition studies done by EDAX (Energy Dispersive Absorption X-ray Spectrometer).

Estimation of material properties of metal matrix composites using finite element method in the presence of micromechanics damages

Abstract Metal matrix composites have growing importance in aerospace industries. Composite materials are heterogeneous in nature and require large number of homogenized material properties to carry out the structural analysis at macro-scale level. The values of these properties change as a function of the volume fraction of the constituent materials. In the present work a micromechanics model subjected to unified periodic boundary conditions is developed based on the Finite Element Method. In the first part of the work, Representative Unit Cell (RUC) is developed for a healthy case; the estimated material properties for this case are compared with the existing literature values. In the second part of the work, the micromechanics models having micromechanics damages like interfacial debonding, fiber cracking and matrix yielding are developed following the concepts and methodology used in the development of healthy RUC. The developed RUC model with micromechanics damages is based on the cohesive zone surface and failed element concept for modeling interfacial debonding and fiber cracking or matrix yielding respectively in the finite element framework. This model is analyzed to estimate the deteriorated elastic moduli in the presence of these micromechanics damages.

Determination of Process Parameters in Multi-Stage Hydro-Mechanical Deep Drawing by FE Simulation

In this work, analysis has been carried to simulate manufacturing of a near hemispherical bottom part with large depth by hydro-mechanical deep drawing with an aim to reduce the number of forming steps and to reduce the extent of thinning in the dome region. Inconel 718 has been considered as the material due to its importance in aerospace industry. It is a Ni-based super alloy and it is one of the most widely used of all super alloys primarily due to large-scale applications in aircraft engines. Using Finite Element Method (FEM), numerical simulations have been carried out for multi-stage hydro-mechanical deep drawing by using the same draw ratios and design parameters as in the case of conventional deep drawing in four stages. The results showed that the minimum thickness in the final part can be increased significantly when compared to conventional deep drawing. It has been found that the part could be deep drawn to the desired height (after trimming at the final stage) without any severe wrinkling. Blank holding force (BHF) and peak counter pressure have been found to have a strong influence on thinning in the component. Decreasing the coefficient of friction has marginally increased the minimum thickness in the final component. By increasing the draw ratio and optimizing BHF, counter pressure and die corner radius in the simulations, it has been found that it is possible to draw the final part in three stages. It has been found that thinning can be further reduced by decreasing the initial blank size without any reduction in the final height. This reduced the draw ratio at every stage and optimum combination of BHF and counter pressure have been found for the 3-stage process also.

QUADRATIC FREQUENCY MODULATED THERMAL WAVE IMAGING FOR NON-DESTRUCTIVE TESTING

Thermal non-destructive testing and evaluation of glass flbre reinforced plastic materials has gained more importance in aerospace industry due to low weight and high strength capabilities in severe environmental conditions. More recently, pulse compression favorable non-stationary excitation schemes have been exhibiting reliable defect detection capabilities in infrared non-destructive testing. This paper introduces a novel infrared non-destructive testing method based on quadratic frequency modulated thermal wave imaging with pulse compression for characterization of glass flbre reinforced plastic materials. Defect detection capability of the proposed method has been experimentally validated using a glass flber reinforced plastic (GFRP) sample with embedded Te∞on inserts. Experimental results proved the enhanced depth resolution capability of the proposed excitation method as compared to the linear frequency modulation with pulse compression.

Enhancement in the Growth of Textured HFCVD Diamond Coatings on Ti-6Al-4V Substrates by Excimer Laser Processing

AbstractIn this work we address the studies of enhancement in diamond growth on Ti-6AI-4V metal alloy by modifying the surface using the excimer laser ablation technique, prior to deposition of diamond. Ti-6Al-4V is chosen for its technological importance in aerospace industry, dental and bio-implant applications. Analysis of the structures of the film is done using X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and Raman spectroscopy. Ablation of the alloy by excimer laser pulses produces periodically hill/valley structures on the surface, thus increasing the density of diamond nucleation and film adhesion. The roughness of the alloy surface was measured to be in the 0.5μm – 1μm range with an average distance between peaks of the hill/valley structure measuring 1.5μm.
