CancelRx case study: implications for clinic and community pharmacy work systems

BackgroundMedication prescribing and discontinuation processes are complex and involve the patient, numerous health care professionals, organizations, health information technology (IT). CancelRx is a health IT that automatically communicates medication discontinuations from the clinic electronic health record to the community pharmacy dispensing platform, theoretically improving communication. CancelRx was implemented across a Midwest academic health system in October 2017. The health system also operates 15 outpatient community pharmacies.ObjectiveThe goal of this qualitative study was to describe how both the clinic and community pharmacy work systems change and interact over time regarding medication discontinuations, before and after CancelRx implantation.ApproachMedical Assistants (n = 9), Community Pharmacists (n = 12), and Pharmacy Administrators (n = 3), employed by the health system were interviewed across 3-time periods between 2017 and 2018— 3-months prior to CancelRx implementation, 3-months after CancelRx implementation, and 9-months after CancelRx implementation. Interviews were audio recorded, transcribed, and conducted a hybrid analysis with deductive content analysis following the Systems Engineering Initiative for Patient Safety (SEIPS) framework and inductive analysis to capture additional codes and themes.Key resultsCancelRx changed the medication discontinuation process at both clinics and community pharmacies. In the clinics, the workflows and medication discontinuation tasks changed over time while MA roles and clinic staff communication practices remained variable. In the pharmacy, CancelRx automated and streamlined how medication discontinuation messages were received and processed, but also increased workload for the pharmacists and introduced new errors.ConclusionsThis study utilizes a systems approach to assess disparate systems within a patient network. Future studies may consider health IT implications for systems that are not in the same health system as well as assessing the role of implementation decisions on health IT use and dissemination.

The Potential of Work From Home for Determining Job Quality

Abstract Job quality is carefully studied in the research literature and there are multiple models for analyzing relevant indicators. The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted employees’ work and lives, leading to changes in work patterns. Much of the discussions fell under the label of the possibility of working from different places and the implications of information technology on the perceived quality of a workplace. The present study examines the relationship between the perceived quality in the context of distance working. To address the current situation the study emphasizes how the theory, research, and practice have evolved in regard to perceived work quality and its implication for employees. The notion of perceived organization quality was broadened, and the implication of working from home was analyzed from the employees’ point of view. How the possibility of working from home affects the perceived quality of an organization and how this will shape the organization’s functions are subjects of this article. The findings contribute to the understanding of employees’ behavior with choosing a workplace and the key factors that shape the image of a quality organization.

This study aims to determine the application of information technology through ZISWAF (Zakat, Infaq, Alms, and Waqf) at LAZ Alwashliyah. This research focuses on LAZ Alwashliyah in collecting and distributing ZISWAF funds and how to manage ZISWAF through information technology. This research uses a qualitative method based on a descriptive study. Data collection techniques using observation, and direct question and answer. Data analysis was carried out in stages, namely data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. Test the validity of the data using triangulation. The results of the study indicate that the implications of information technology in LAZ Alwashliyah have been carried out. This can be seen with the application of information technology in the form of the LAZ Alwashliyah Website in the collection and distribution of infaq, alms, and waqf funds to date. With the ZIS fundraising process carried out at LAZ Alwashliyah using two methods, the first online and the second offline. In addition to collection, the process of distributing zakat is still offline with the method of going directly to the field and seeing the economy and giving it to people who are entitled to receive it.

Benefits of IT-Enabled Flexibilities for Foreign versus Local Firms in Emerging Economies

Emerging economies present attractive opportunities to foreign firms. However, internationalization risk faced by foreign firms can have significant implications for their performance relative to local firms. Information Technology (IT) and IT-enabled capabilities help firms overcome internationalization risk and compete globally. Marketing Capability and Relational Capability also mitigate this risk through access to information related to markets and the business environment. We examine how foreign firms and local firms compare in leveraging synergies between such IT and firm capabilities. We focus on two kinds of IT-enabled capabilities: IT-enabled Flexibility in Customer Services, and IT-enabled Flexibility in Partner Services, and develop hypotheses for their complementary effects with Marketing Capability and Relational Capability respectively, to positively influence firm performance. We then draw on the firm-specific advantages framework to argue that foreign firms face a comparative disadvantage relative to local firms in leveraging the synergy between IT-enabled Flexibility in Customer Services and Marketing Capability. In contrast, foreign firms enjoy a comparative advantage relative to local firms in leveraging the synergy between IT-enabled Flexibility in Partner Services and Relational Capability. Empirical analysis using matched-pair survey and secondary data of 182 foreign and local firms in India supports our hypotheses. Our findings highlight important differences in how foreign and local firms benefit from IT, thus contributing towards a better understanding of how context and contingencies influence IT implications in emerging economies.

Investigating the Effect of Online and Offline Workplace Communication Networks on Employees’ Job Performance: Considering the Role of Culture

ABSTRACTAlthough many researchers have investigated the implications of information technology on people, business, and the environment, most of these studies have focused on developed countries. According to some researchers, IT strategies and organizational outcomes would be significantly different across countries due to existing structural and cultural differences. As such, this research project makes use of social network theory to investigate the varying consequences of IT strategies on job performance, distinguishing the impact of online and offline communication networks. As culture is an essential element in explaining how people interact through communication networks, the role of different cultural factors has been examined further. The results of a field study among 104 information analysts indicated that offline direct, offline indirect, and online direct ties all had a significant impact on their job performance. Moreover, the result of a field study among 50 experts indicated that the achievement motive was the most important among employees, followed by effective cultural factors on IT usage and generalizability.

Research on information technology (IT) adoption and use, one of the most mature streams of research in the information science (IS) literature, is primarily based on the intentionality framework. Behavioral intention (BI) to use an IT is considered the sole proximal determinant of IT adoption and use. Recently, researchers have discussed the limitations of BI and argued that behavioral expectation (BE) would be a better predictor of IT use. However, without a theoretical and empirical understanding of the determinants of BE, we remain limited in our comprehension of what factors promote greater IT use in organizations. Using the unified theory of acceptance and use of technology (UTAUT) as the theoretical framework, we develop a model that posits two determinants (i.e., social influence and facilitating conditions) of BE and four moderators (i.e., gender, age, experience, and voluntariness of use) of the relationship between BE and its determinants. We argue that the cognitions underlying the formation of BI and BE differ. We found strong support for the proposed model in a longitudinal field study of 321 users of a new IT. We offer theoretical and practical IT implications of our findings.

Use of information technology and services by medical students: a case study

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to examine users’ attitude toward the implementation of information technology (IT) on the library of Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGIMS). The paper also aims to explore the hindrances and recommendations for IT-enabled services and find out the present status of automation in the library of SGPGIMS. Design/methodology/approach – A well-structured questionnaire was designed to collect the data for the present study. A thorough survey of the literature was done to examine the findings of the earlier relevant studies. Findings – The results of the survey provide the important information regarding the state-of-the-art of the users of mentioned library. It also finds the barriers due to which overall implication of IT is being delayed. The findings of the study bequeath measures to eradicate the barriers and get the fully automated medical library. Originality/value – The study will have important implications on policymakers, librarians and other higher authorities of SGPGIMS to improve the IT status of their library. It evaluates the users need and points out the measures which can improve the IT status of these libraries.

In recent years, the European Community has taken measures to complete the internal market in the fields of information and communications technology. These include: the opening up of public telecommunications markets, standardization of information technology and telecommunications, mutually recognized type approval of telecommunications terminals, a coordination of infrastructure planning of telecommunications administrations, programmes of research and development, regional promotion, and harmonization of the regulatory framework. The goal is complete unification of the markets by 1992.

The effects of IT: from performance to value

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to differentiate and define the concepts of firm performance and firm value. Then, the implications of information technology (IT)-enabled firm performance and firm value will be clarified. Finally, the effects of IT capabilities on firm performance and firm value will be compared. Design/methodology/approach – InformationWeek's IT leader rankings (from 1998 to 2011) are used for analysis in a longitudinal study. Three different test methods (i.e. significant years, significant levels, and adjusted-previous performance) are used. Findings – It is confirmed that no matter which tests are examined, the contributions of IT capabilities to firm value are all greater than those to firm performance. This also shows that IT contributes to long-term influences more than it does to short-term influences. Research limitations/implications – This study confirms that firm performance (accounting-based measures) and firm value (financial market-based measures) are two different variables and IT capabilities affect these two parts differently. Practical implications – Firms should use a long-term viewpoint to deploy their IT strategies. This will create a long-term growth of firm value leading to greater competitiveness, and, ultimately, sustained competitive advantage. Originality/value – The differences between firm performance and firm value in measurements, characteristics, and implications are specified. The empirical study confirms that IT capabilities contribute more to firm value than to firm performance, although IT capabilities influence both at the same time.

Information Technology, Materiality, and Organizational Change: A Professional Odyssey

We begin with a retrospective reflection on the first author’s research career, which in large part is devoted to research about the implications of information technology (IT) for organizational change. Although IT has long been associated with organizational change, our historical review of the treatment of technology in organization theory demonstrates how easily the material aspects of organizations can disappear into the backwaters of theory development. This is an unfortunate result since the material characteristics of IT initiatives distinguish them from other organizational change initiatives. Our aim is to restore materiality to studies of IT impact by tracing the reasons for its disappearance and by offering options in which IT’s materiality plays a more central theoretical role. We adopt a socio-technical perspective that differs from a strict sociomaterial perspective insofar as we wish to preserve the ontological distinction between material artifacts and their social context of use. Our analysis proceeds using the concept of “affordance” as a relational concept consistent with the socio-technical perspective. We then propose extensions of organizational routines theory that incorporate material artifacts in the generative system known as routines. These contributions exemplify two of the many challenges inherent in adopting materiality as a new research focus in the study of IT’s organizational impacts.
