China’s Air Purifier Industry Revisited: Implications for Competitive Strategy

Air purifiers have been widely used in South Korea, Japan, and countries in the West, but their penetration in China is still very low, suggesting great growth potential. I researched China’s air purifier industry in 2015 when it was experiencing a surge of new entries. In this study, I examine the development of the industry since then and firms’ competitive positions. In addition, I also explore how firms could compete effectively in the future. I collect data from a major online platform in China. Results show that the previous industry entries were not successful. Massive exits occurred during 2016-2018. However, firms entered the industry again after it hit the bottom in 2018. I argue that the structural change of the industry can be better understood by studying the dynamics of its submarkets. Firms’ competitive positions have also changed. Late-movers have successfully caught up and surpassed the long-time industry leader. The industry-level factors and firm-level resources have contributed to their success. Finally, I discuss practical implications.

Integrated Online Consumer Preference Mining for Product Improvement with Online Reviews

Abstract Exploring consumer preferences for a product is essential for the enterprise in product improvement. Many studies have been conducted in consumer preference. However, few studies have concentrated on evaluating the product and service characteristics of a specific product, to facilitate product and service improvements. This study proposes a systematic research framework for exploring major product and service features that reflect consumer preferences based on the online reviews. By creatively integrating quantitative studies of multiple linear regression and meta-analysis, this study expects to generate a feature-based preference importance ranking. Furthermore, by adopting an importance-satisfaction analysis, we can draw a matrix that is valuable in product improvement. Coupled with the preference rankings, implications for competitive strategies that facilitate product improvement can be drawn. The effectiveness of this methodology is verified by a case study of laptop on the basis of the online reviews from amazon.cn.

Competitive dynamics: Eastern roots, Western growth

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to bridge the understanding of apparent dichotomies such as East and West, philosophy and social sciences, and antiquity and modernity, and to continue the vibrant expansion of competitive dynamics study into the realm of East-West theoretical fusion.Design/methodology/approachThe author looks to classical Chinese philosophy to discover the origins and nature of competitive dynamics. The paper develops the premise that the foundational thrusts of this contemporary Western management topic spring from ancient Eastern conceptions of duality, relativity, and time.FindingsResearch inroads are made along two paths. First, the paper traces the theoretical and philosophical underpinnings of competitive dynamics to Eastern thinking. Then by bridging what have customarily been perceived as fundamentally different paradigms, it reveals, in a new light, empirical findings in this strategy subfield.Research limitations/implicationsLinking Western management science, and specifically the study of competitive dynamics, to classical Eastern philosophy raises new research questions in the areas of international management and management education as well as competitive dynamics. In the latter, the paper suggests opportunities for exploring connections between traditional Chinese concepts and contemporary organizational and competition research issues, including competitive and cooperative relationships at the industry level. Future research may also investigate the fundamental differences and similarities between Eastern and Western philosophies, and their implications for competitive strategies.Originality/valueFrom a relatively obscure corner of business academia, competitive dynamics now occupies a distinct place in strategic management research and is a topic of intense interest to scholars in a variety of disciplines. The usual view is that competitive dynamics fits squarely in the spectrum of social sciences, an organically home-grown area of Western study. This paper examines the topic from a distinctly different angle – through the lens of ancient Eastern philosophy – to discern deeper a deeper meaning and wider application.

The strategic role of knowledge management in nonprofit organisations

Abstract Australian nonprofit organisations (NFPs) operate in an increasingly competitive marketplace for funding staff and volunteers and donations. In this context, many NFPs are being driven to adopt more commercial practices in order to improve their strategic performance, particularly competitive positioning for donor appeal, staff retention and service strategy and delivery. Knowledge management (KM) is one commercial practice being explored and implemented by the NFP sector to support strategic performance and operations. Although the concept of knowledge management is basically understood, the implications and strategies to pursue this practice in a NFP context are under explored. This paper presents a KM implementation planning framework for discussion and further research in the NFP sector. Specifically, this paper proposes that NFP's unique missions, many and varied organisational structures and operational maturity requires a customised approach to knowledge management. Implications for competitive strategy and performance are discussed. © 2007 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Modeling Loss Aversion and Reference Dependence Effects on Brand Choice

Based upon a recently developed multiattribute generalization of prospect theory's value function (Tversky and Kahneman 1991), we argue that consumer choice is influenced by the position of brands relative to multiattribute reference points, and that consumers weigh losses from a reference point more than equivalent sized gains (loss aversion). We sketch implications of this model for understanding brand choice. We develop a multinomial logit formulation of a reference-dependent choice model, calibrating it using scanner data. In addition to providing better fit in both estimation and forecast periods than a standard multinomial logit model, the model's coefficients demonstrate significant loss aversion, as hypothesized. We also discuss the implications of a reference-dependent view of consumer choice for modeling brand choice, demonstrate that loss aversion can account for asymmetric responses to changes in product characteristics, and examine other implications for competitive strategy.
