Public Policies in Development: Analysis of The Goiás Social Program in Goiânia (2023)

Objective: To present information, analyses and discussions about the development of the Goiás Social Program in the city of Goiânia – GO and its respective contribution to achieving the SDGs proposed by the 2030 Agenda. Theoretical Framework: Brazilian Public Policies and Sustainable Development under the global agreement for the development and implementation of sustainability strategies and practices. Methodology: Quantitative and qualitative survey and analysis of data related to the Goiás Social Program, namely, founding legislation, implementation proposal, budget, objectives, structure, beneficiaries and results from the PGS projects and programs developed in the city of Goiânia - GO, on the official PGS pages, and their respective implementing institutions: State Secretariat for Social Development of the Government of the State of Goiás and Municipal Secretariat for Human and Social Development of Goiânia Results and Discussion: The investigation resulted in the identification of projects that, despite the general idea of focusing on sustainability, lacked precise disclosure regarding the publication of the project proposals in full, budget, objectives, structure, beneficiaries and results, made it difficult to analyze the scope and effective contribution of these projects to the achievement of the SDGs of the 2030 Agenda. Implications of the investigation: Sustainability has gained prominence in the global Public Policy Agenda. Investigating the effective contributions of Brazilian public policies in this scenario becomes essential in terms of improving and enhancing its process, whose demands are under a continuous dynamism that requires monitoring the actions developed in compliance with the transformations of these demands resulting from social dynamism. Originality/Value: This investigation presents information on the propositions and structure of the Goiás Social Program, as well as on the management of its implementation in the city of Goiânia - GO.

The Identification of Problems in Creating Sustainable Organisations in Ghana

Organisations have been implementing strategies in their business to enhance the continuity of their operations. The emerging issues related to environmental and social problems have made organisations implement sustainability strategies in their business activities. The purpose of the study is to identify the problems in building sustainable organisations, and to make recommendations that will improve sustainable organisations. The article consists of three main parts. The first is the theoretical part, which analyses the challenges relating to sustainability implementations. The second involves the research methodology, which combined both quantitative and qualitative methods in the study. The third part of the research focuses on empirical analysis and evaluation. The findings reveal problems relating to an organisation’s inability to reward and motivate employees’ work or activities done, a lack of local funding associated with environmentally friendly materials, and a lack of economic development sustainability policies. The research concludes with recommendations for the effective building of a sustainable organisation.

Sustainable practices in last-mile logistics of small Brazilian e-retailers: an analysis using an MCDM approach

ObjetivosEl objetivo es contribuir al desarrollo de estrategias mediante la identificación de prácticas sostenibles. Por lo tanto, la investigación tiene un doble objetivo: revelar las prácticas de sostenibilidad integradas en las actividades logísticas de última milla de minoristas de comercio electrónico, analizar las interrelaciones entre estas prácticas y categorizarlas según su importancia para los pequeños minoristas de comercio electrónico en Brasil.MetodologíaSe llevó a cabo un mapeo de la literatura para identificar prácticas de sostenibilidad en las actividades de última milla adoptadas por minoristas en línea, lo que llevó a la propuesta de un metamodelo. Un total de 67 artículos forman parte de la muestra final. Posteriormente, el estudio aplicó la técnica de toma de decisiones multicriterio Decision-Making Trial and Evaluation Laboratory (DEMATEL) para estructurar el problema de investigación mediante análisis de causa y efecto entre las prácticas, con el objetivo de priorizar las prácticas críticas.ResultadosEl resultado indica una fuerte dependencia de prácticas económicas para implementar la sostenibilidad en la logística de última milla. En la dimensión económica de la sostenibilidad, los costes operacionales y la calidad de los servicios son variables de efecto y presentan una fuerte correlación.OriginalidadLa originalidad de esta investigación radica en identificar prácticas de sostenibilidad económica, social y ambiental adoptadas por minoristas en línea en los procesos logísticos de última milla. Sustainability Strategies and Performance of International Not-For-Profit Organizations in Kenya: A Case of World Food Programme

Purpose: The study aimed at identifying sustainability strategies adopted by international not-for-profit organizations in Kenya and how the strategies influenced the organizations’ performance. This research specifically focused on the World Food Programme (WFP) as a case study. The research aimed to examine the impact of fund generation, talent development, managerial capacities and collaboration on the success of international not-for-profit organizations in Kenya. Methodology: The research was informed by Resource Dependency Theory, Dynamic Capabilities Theory, Contingency Theory of Leadership, and Stakeholder Theory. This study used a descriptive research approach. The research focused on a specific group of individuals, consisting of 319 senior and middle management personnel that work at World Food Programme headquarters located in Nairobi County, Kenya. The research used Fishers' et al. methodology to get the sample size of 174 respondents. The research used a questionnaire to gather primary data. The obtained data was encoded and exported into the computer software program known as Statistical Package of Social Sciences (SPSS) for analysis, which produced conclusions related to the topic of the research. Descriptive statistics were used to combine quantitative analytic methodologies. The main data was summarized, organized, interpreted, and presented using frequencies, percentages, mean scores, and standard deviations. The research findings are shown using statistical graphs, data tabulation, and measurements of central tendency. The principles of impartiality, secrecy, anonymity, and voluntary involvement were scrupulously followed. Findings: The results showed that implementing fund development as a sustainability strategy has a notable and beneficial impact on the performance of international not-for-profit organizations in Kenya (β = 0.263; P = 0.000<0.05). The study revealed that talent development has a noteworthy impact on the success of international not-for-profit organizations in Kenya (β = 0.334; P = 0.000<0.05). The study revealed that management qualities had a strong and beneficial impact on the success of international not-for-profit organizations in Kenya (β = 0.308; P = 0.000<0.05). The results also indicated that cooperation and collaboration had a crucial role in influencing the success of foreign non-profit organizations in Kenya (β = 0.206; P = 0.007<0.05). The study found that implementing sustainability strategies significantly improved the performance of international not-for-profit organizations in Kenya. Unique Contribution to Theory, Practice and Policy: Therefore, the study recommends that leaders of these organizations prioritize the adoption of these strategies to further enhance performance.

Benchmarking the initiatives of ESG research leaders

The term "Environmental, Social, and Governance" (ESG) has become fundamental for companies seeking to align their operations with a positive and sustainable impact. However, the spread of ESG is not equal worldwide. Therefore, the most advanced countries in ESG can be benchmarked for policies and practices that can accelerate the implementation of sustainable strategies in others. This work aims to identify ESG initiatives in the three countries with the highest h-Index (China, the United States, and Italy) that contribute to Sustainable Development (SD), investigating their articles, authors, and universities. For this purpose, Scopus was used to survey the h-Index and other data, combining a Bibliographic Study of the articles with Secondary Data Analysis of other papers. The progress made by these countries in expanding and strengthening ESG practices is significant and diverse. Together, they are shaping the global ESG landscape, driving more sustainable corporate practices. The results of this work shed light on the studies carried out in these nations, showing the advancement of ESG driven by financial markets, their contributions to SD, and the relevant role of universities in this regard.

Investigation of Heavy Metal Composition and Associated Health Risks from Selected Groundwater Wells in Temeke, Dar-es-Salaam

Water quality continues to be the challenge to residents in Dar es Salaam due to various anthropogenic activities in the city. This study was conducted to assess groundwater quality by determining concentrations of heavy metals. Both probability and Nonprobability sampling techniques were used to collect samples from 40 groundwater wells in 24 wards of Temeke municipal and analysed using Microwave Plasma Atomic Emission Spectrometer (Agilent 4210 MP-AES) at the Geochemistry Laboratory of the University of Dar es Salaam. Results indicated varying heavy metal concentrations ranging from 0.71 ± 0.08 to 6.64 ± 0.21 mg/l for As, 0.02 ± 0.01 to 0.07 ± 0.01 mg/l for Co and 0.16 ± 0.01 to 0.02 ± 0.01 mg/l for Pb. The As, Co and Pb concentrations exceeded (P < 0.05) the recommended TBS standards of 0.05 mg/l, 0.003 mg/l and 0.01 mg/l respectively. Other concentrations ranged from 0.01 ± 0.01 to 0.88 ± 0.01 mg/l for Cu, 0.02 ± 0.01 to 3.55 ± 0.02 mg/l for Fe, 0.00 ± 0.00 to 4.63 ± 0.03 mg/l for Mn and 0.01 ± 0.01 to 3.00 ± 0.01 mg/l for Zn. The Cu, Fe, Mn and Zn concentrations were below (P > 0.05) the allowable TBS limits of 0.05 mg/l, 0.3 mg/l, 0.1 mg/l and 3 mg/l respectively. Health risk analysis revealed potential adverse health effects from long term consumption of As, Mn and Pb with Hazard Quotient exceeding 1 (HQ > 1). The Hazard Index (HI) for all groundwater samples was also above 1 (HI > 1) indicating a higher likelihood of adverse health effects. The study concluded that groundwater wells in Temeke Municipal are affected through natural and anthropogenic activities leading to high levels of heavy metal concentrations. Also, this study provides valuable information on risk associated by continued usage of groundwater in Temeke region and hence informs respective stakeholders on groundwater quality and potential risks thereby emphasizing the need for remedial measures and stricter regulations to safeguard public health. The study recommends the need for regular groundwater quality and safety monitoring to assess the levels of heavy metals concentrations and implement sustainable groundwater management strategies to address the increasing water demand in Temeke municipal, Dar es Salaam.

Crops dependency on pollinators to secure pollination success and fruit development: A case study of almond varieties from Morocco

AbstractThe contribution of insects to pollination constitutes a globally important ecosystem service. Due to the increasing demand for entomophilous crops, the nutritional and economic importance of insect‐pollinated crops and the inability of managed pollinators (Apis mellifera L) to meet the high demand for their services indicate that agriculture heavily relies on wild pollinators. Almonds are an economically valuable crop in Morocco. Therefore, it is essential to understand the fundamental pollination requirements of major almond varieties to promote their production. The main objectives of this study were to assess the dependency of three almond cultivars (Espoir, Largueta and Planeta) on insect pollination, and then to evaluate the pollination deficit resulting from the lack of these pollinators. For this purpose, we used insect‐proof net bags constructed around branches of almond trees to compare fruit set and yield with open and open + hand‐pollinated flowers. The results of the fruit set experiment confirmed that all three varieties require insect pollination, as fruit set and yield were significantly higher in insect‐pollinated than insect‐isolated trees. All three almond varieties were categorized as obligatory dependent on biotic pollinators. In addition, two out of the three studied almond varieties showed high pollination deficit resulting from the lower abundance and/or diversity of pollinating insects. The results of the current study highlights the important role of insect pollinators for almond crops and the urgent need for the implementation of sustainable strategies to preserve pollinators within agricultural ecosystems.

Research on the spatio-temporal evolution and impact of China’s industrial green development from the perspective of digital economy--based on analysis of 279 cities in China

Empowering industrial green development with the digital economy represents a crucial approach to advancing the green transformation of China’s economy and achieving high-quality economic development. Based on panel data from 279 cities in China from 2011 to 2021, this article uses the spatial econometrics model and threshold effect model to explore the spatial effect and nonlinearity of digital economy (DE) on industrial green development (IGD). The results show that, both DE and IGD exhibit fluctuating upward trends in China. There exists stronger spatial linkage effect in the eastern coastal areas, but this effect is weaker in the central and western regions. Furthermore, DE has significantly promoted IGD, and the conclusion remains robust after a series of endogeneity and robustness tests. Additionally, the promotion of the DE for IGD is characterized by regional spillovers and non-linear dynamics. The research results can serve as a theoretical support and decision-making basis for China to enhance industrial green development, promote the construction of an ecological civilization, and implement sustainable development strategies.

An In-Depth Study of Phytopathogenic Ganoderma: Pathogenicity, Advanced Detection Techniques, Control Strategies, and Sustainable Management.

Phytopathogenic Ganoderma species pose a significant threat to global plant health, resulting in estimated annual economic losses exceeding USD (US Dollars) 68 billion in the agriculture and forestry sectors worldwide. To combat this pervasive menace effectively, a comprehensive understanding of the biology, ecology, and plant infection mechanisms of these pathogens is imperative. This comprehensive review critically examines various aspects of Ganoderma spp., including their intricate life cycle, their disease mechanisms, and the multifaceted environmental factors influencing their spread. Recent studies have quantified the economic impact of Ganoderma infections, revealing staggering yield losses ranging from 20% to 80% across various crops. In particular, oil palm plantations suffer devastating losses, with an estimated annual reduction in yield exceeding 50 million metric tons. Moreover, this review elucidates the dynamic interactions between Ganoderma and host plants, delineating the pathogen's colonization strategies and its elicitation of intricate plant defense responses. This comprehensive analysis underscores the imperative for adopting an integrated approach to Ganoderma disease management. By synergistically harnessing cultural practices, biological control, and chemical treatments and by deploying resistant plant varieties, substantial strides can be made in mitigating Ganoderma infestations. Furthermore, a collaborative effort involving scientists, breeders, and growers is paramount in the development and implementation of sustainable strategies against this pernicious plant pathogen. Through rigorous scientific inquiry and evidence-based practices, we can strive towards safeguarding global plant health and mitigating the dire economic consequences inflicted by Ganoderma infections.

Links between the actors and mining activities related to the implementation of sustainable development principles

AbstractThe uninterrupted supply of raw materials is essential to implement low‐carbon technologies. Therefore, the sustainable extraction of these materials is crucial. One of its important aspects is the analysis of the interaction between the actors as well as the actions undertaken by them. This study explores the characteristics of the network of links between social actors and the supporting and inhibitory actions related to sustainable development that the mining industry and its possible implications with collaboration and conflict between actors. Our methodological approach consisted in building two bipartite networks based on actor‐action interaction, identified thanks to the literature review of sustainability initiatives of mining companies. Applying network analysis, we examine the structural characteristics of the networks and the strength of links between social actors. The results highlighted that “Government,” “Local society,” and “Indigenous peoples” have a critical position in the network of “Supporting” and “Inhibitory” actions. They are those who could articulate with other social actors to create collaborative processes in the implementation of actions that contribute to sustainable development by the mining industry. However, from the analysis of the structure of the network of “Inhibitory” actions, these three actors are the ones who could be relevant in the dynamics of the development of conflicts with the mining industry. This study presents, from the dual perspective (“Supporting” and “Inhibitory” actions), the characteristics of the systems of relationships between social actors and their possible implications for the design, as well as implementation of sustainable strategies in the mining sector.

Drivers, barriers and key practices of corporate sustainability strategy implementation in hotels

This paper analyzes the implementation of corporate sustainability strategies (CSS) in hotels, identifying key factors and practices as perceived by middle-managers. Using qualitative methods, we conducted initial and in-depth interviews with owners, top-managers, and 37 middle-managers from various departments of a hotel chain in the Canary Islands. An existing literature-informed CSS implementation framework guided our analysis, revealing nine key factors that act as drivers, barriers, or both to CSS implementation. We identified crucial practices including paper-use reduction, employee well-being, plastic-use reduction, energy efficiency, recycling, water management, air quality, social contribution, food waste management, and green chemicals, noting varying relevancies across departments. Particularly, work-wellbeing, plastic-use reduction, and energy efficiency showed the highest alignment with CSS. Our findings offer insights into the practical application of CSS, underscoring the importance of tailoring department-specific practices to overarching sustainability goals to bolster organizational sustainability strategies.

Quantifying the Impact of Carbon Reduction Interventions and Incentive Mechanisms in Campus Buildings: A Case Study from a Chinese University

With the development of sustainable cities, densely populated higher education institutions increasingly emphasize the sustainability of campuses and their impact on the environment. However, there is a lack of means to quantify emission reduction measures. This study aims to propose an evaluation framework that can quantify energy conservation and emission reduction measures and incentive policies. To this end, this study adopts a mixed methods approach, using questionnaires to assess the effectiveness of management and communication interventions and the impact of incentives on residents’ willingness to participate in emission reduction efforts. The survey results show that although the support for the intervention measures is slightly higher than the average, specific measures such as adjusting dormitory lights-out time and providing sports equipment show superior emission reduction potential. Universities could reduce carbon emissions by about 560 tons per year without incentives and just using interventions. However, when incentives and interventions are combined, the university’s annual emissions reductions are expected to increase to 800 to 1045 tons. Research also highlights the importance of understanding the relationship between occupant behavior, energy consumption, and building carbon emissions. By quantifying the impact of carbon reduction measures and incentives on the daily behaviors of residents, universities can more effectively implement sustainable campus strategies.

Design optimisation towards lower embodied carbon of prefabricated buildings: Balancing standardisation and customisation

The design principle of standardisation is widely acknowledged for its potential in reducing embodied carbon emissions (CE) in prefabrications through the facilitated reuse of prefabricated elements. Yet, its effectiveness in optimising CE in precast constructions remains underexplored. This article introduces a micro-level sustainable design optimisation approach for precast projects that factors the CE of both building materials and concrete formwork. Using a parametric approach, the method generates design alternatives derived from the original architecture design. Structure analysis is then employed to determine the design of structure elements and formwork pieces. With the objective of minimising CE from building materials and formwork, a genetic algorithm (GA) is used to explore solutions with the lowest CE. Comparative analysis shows this approach's effectiveness over standardisation-only designs, reducing concrete, reinforcement, precast formwork, and overall CE by 14.32%, 16.71%, 10.39%, and 10.51%, respectively. These findings underscore that increased standardisation does not necessarily lead to lower embodied CE. Integrating the benefits of element standardisation and customisation presents a promising carbon reduction strategy. The introduction of micro-level variables enhances the understanding of standardisation and offers novel carbon reduction strategies, such as increasing the adaptability of casting formwork and maximising the use of existing formwork pieces. Designers and manufactures can adopt these strategies for lower embodied CE of projects. This study also addresses the limitations of design tools used in early architecture design stages, providing designers with continuous decision-making assistance, thereby facilitating the implementation of sustainable strategies.

Meeting the challenges and strategies regarding malaria elimination: qualitative evaluation of perceptions from a local population in Colombia

“One Health” and “Social Determinants of Health” approaches are crucial for implementation of sustainable strategies for the control and elimination of infectious diseases such as malaria. These approaches highlight the importance of the social component in the design of elimination strategies, as well as the communities’ involvement in the implementation of these measures at local levels. Qualitative analysis approaches for malaria research can be useful for assessing population acceptance of intervention measures and for addressing negative perceptions that can threaten the success of control goals by undermining the community’s trust in interventions. In this paper, we explore some observations and interpretations from the qualitative content analysis of two open-ended questions about malaria, from a survey conducted between September and November 2016 in Guapi, a high risk transmission area in the Colombian Pacific Region. Using the spatial transmission unit concept for the analysis of the conditions and factors involved in malaria transmission under the “One Health” and “Social Determinants of Health” approaches, we reveal that responders’ perceptions reflects both the need and requirement for continuous assistance to solve local problems and also a comprehensive problem-solving effort by the government that includes basic sanitation. From the analyses, we present a graphic model that illustrates how to address the problem of malaria control and elimination from the perspectives of the community’s perceptions in Guapi, highlighting the need for joint efforts of community, academy, and government to achieve the goal of controlling and eliminating malaria in the region.

Digital Divide and Financially Marginalized Communities: Strategies for Implementation of NEP 2020

The advent of the digital age has brought unprecedented opportunities for education, yet it has also exacerbated the digital divide, disproportionately affecting financially marginalized communities. This research paper delves into the intersection of the digital divide and financially marginalized communities within the framework of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 in India. The study investigates strategies for implementing NEP 2020 to bridge the digital gap and ensure equitable access to educational opportunities for these communities. Drawing upon existing literature and empirical evidence, this paper delineates the multifaceted nature of the digital divide, encompassing factors such as access to technology, digital literacy, and connectivity challenges faced by financially marginalized communities. It critically examines the provisions and objectives of NEP 2020 related to digital education, analyzing their potential to address the digital disparities among marginalized groups. Furthermore, this research scrutinizes innovative approaches and best practices for implementing digital initiatives under NEP 2020, including the deployment of digital infrastructure in underserved areas, tailored digital literacy programs, and community engagement strategies. It explores the role of government policies, private sector partnerships, and civil society initiatives in leveraging technology to empower financially marginalized communities in education. Additionally, the paper discusses the challenges and barriers hindering the effective implementation of digital inclusion strategies under NEP 2020, such as affordability issues, cultural barriers, and infrastructural limitations. Through a comprehensive analysis, this study aims to provide insights and recommendations for policymakers, educators, and stakeholders to design and implement sustainable strategies for bridging the digital divide and fostering digital equity among financially marginalized communities in the context of NEP 2020.

A pattern‐based tool to support companies in sustainability‐oriented business strategies: grounded theory research in agribusiness

AbstractSustainability is an issue that echoes in our daily lives, leading to a new post‐COVID‐19 crisis trend: sustainable business. Sustainability encompasses environmental, social, and economic aspects are reflected in corporate organizational practices and sustainable business models. Despite this, integrating sustainability into business practices presents a challenge. As indicated by the literature review, 90% of the existing sustainable business models are partially capable of covering the three dimensions of sustainability. This study proposes a pattern‐based tool to support companies in the implementation of sustainability‐oriented business strategies emerging from a grounded theory research in agribusiness. The proposed pattern‐based tool maps the current sustainable business models, the material topics, and Global Reporting Initiatives that a company can adopt to implement sustainability strategies. Sustainable business models came from literature review, material topics and GRIs were identified analyzing 107 European agribusiness companies. The proposed pattern‐based tool, can be explored through three patterns designed to implement economic, social, and environmental sustainability strategies. It was applied in a case study to better demonstrate how to use the proposed tool in the practice. Discussions and implications for academia and agribusinesses are provided.

Unapređenje održivosti tekstilne industrije i cirkularne ekonomije kroz implementaciju digitalnog pasoša proizvoda

The purpose of this paper is to highlight the theoretical dilemmas and practical challenges associated with the digital passport of products in the textile industry, especially in the context of sustainability and the circular economy. In order for business entities to successfully create and implement sustainability strategies and circular economy models, it is necessary to include a detailed overview of the product life cycle. In this sense, the digital product passport (Digital Product Passport -DPP) in the textile industry is a digital file or database that contains all relevant information about a certain textile product.
