Empowerment of Chicken Farmers Based on Cleaner Production and Strengthening of Product Added Value through Entrepreneurial Knowledge Enhancement

Given the environmental and health challenges, chicken poultry farms are now facing an increasing urgency to implement cleaner production. The application of the Cleaner Production concept is expected to be a solution to increase business efficiency and sustainability. One way is to process chicken poultry farm waste into valuable products, such as organic fertilizers, thereby reducing environmental negative impacts. This research method uses a Research and Development (R&D) approach with a three-box method. The community participates in a training program focusing on the innovation of processed chicken products, namely the manufacture of dimsum. This training covers theory and practices about Cleaner Production and dimsum-making techniques. The method used in building a complete solution in community service was obtained by Borg and Gall with the calculation of a questionnaire used to measure the achievement of induction of knowledge and skills based on the three-box method. The implementation of community service programs has shown an increase in the skills of partner Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) by 89%, an increase in knowledge by 97.6%, and the development of ideas for sustainability by 98.8%. This community service provides a complete solution to increase cleaner production, effectively improving skills and adding value to UD Sumber Mandiri processed chicken products.

The implementation of cleaner production throughout various industries

Background: The implementation of cleaner production (CP) has gained significant attention in recent years as a cost-effective strategy to address environmental challenges and improve resource efficiency. Methods: A literature review was conducted to examine the implementation of CP in various industrial sectors and the factors that influence its success. Findings: The review found that the successful implementation of CP is influenced by regulatory and policy frameworks, stakeholder involvement, the availability of technical and financial resources, and the level of awareness and understanding of CP among industrial firms. Conclusion: The adoption of CP practices can lead to significant environmental and economic benefits, including reduced energy and water consumption, reduced waste generation and pollution, and increased competitiveness and profitability. However, challenges to the implementation of CP were also identified, including a lack of awareness and understanding, a lack of financial and technical resources, and a lack of supportive policy frameworks.

Energy-saving drive control strategy for electric tractors based on terrain parameter identification

Emissions from agricultural production already have a significant impact on the global environment. New energy, zero-emission electric tractors have great potential for application. How to further reduce energy consumption under the premise of ensuring operational stability is an urgent problem to be solved to realize the broad application of electric tractors. For this purpose, this paper proposed an energy-saving drive control strategy for electric tractors based on terrain parameter identification. At first, the longitudinal dynamics model and load transfer model of the electric tractor were established by considering the terrain information of the area to be operated. Mathematical principles for adjusting wheel slip to reduce energy consumption in electric tractors are presented. Then, a wheel longitudinal force estimation algorithm was designed based on the principle of sliding-mode observer and dynamics compensation. To achieve energy-saving drives for electric tractors, a particle filter based on a wheel-soil model was designed to identify terrain parameters in real time and calculate the optimal slip to control the torque of the drive motor. Lastly, the strategy is validated by hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) simulation tests and real-vehicle tests. HIL tests show that this strategy results in a 25.35% increase in operational speed stability and a 6.79% reduction in operational energy consumption compared to the conventional drive control strategy. The real vehicle test shows a 45.09% increase in operating speed stability and a 9.51% reduction in total energy consumption of the proposed method. The proposed drive control strategy reduces operational energy consumption and operational costs on the premise of ensuring the stability of operational speed, which is conducive to the implementation of cleaner production.

Environmental pressure exerted by the petrochemical industry and urban environmental resilience: Evidence from Chinese petrochemical port cities

Based on a multi-source data fusion-driven assessment framework, this study quantitatively evaluates the urban environmental resilience (UER) of seven Chinese petrochemical port cities (PPCs) from 2012 to 2019 under the compound environmental pressures (CEPs) of the petrochemical industry. The findings revealed that Tangshan and Zhangzhou can be classified as high-pressure and low-resilience cities; Lianyungang and Huizhou as high-pressure and medium-resilience cities; Dalian and Ningbo as medium-pressure and medium-resilience cities; and Shanghai as a low-pressure and high-resilience city. From 2012 to 2019, the UER of PPCs exhibited a fluctuating upward trend. However, most cities can currently only withstand single petrochemical environmental pressures and are incapable of managing the CEPs of the petrochemical industry. Except for Shanghai, the UER of all cities is below the average level of 0.106. The implementation of cleaner production and the green petrochemical industry's scale have not yet met the policy expectations set by authorities. Moreover, major ecological initiatives and policy regulations are lagging, relative to the pace of the development of petrochemical industries. Key environmental pressure sources from the petrochemical industry were identified: reinforced dependence on petrochemical fuels (0.0393), high carbon emissions from the petrochemical industry (0.0335), and the instability of fossil energy supplies (0.0328). Insufficient environmental resistance (−0.068) and delayed renewal capacity (0.041) have been identified as weak links limiting the UER of PPCs. Strengthening environmental protection projects, improving urban infrastructure, and controlling petrochemical industry risks were projected as common focal points and effective environmental measures for all PPCs to manage long-term threats and sudden CEPs from the petrochemical industry.

Consumption‐Based Carbon Emissions of 85 Federal Entities in Russia

AbstractAs the fourth largest CO2 emitter, Russia's constituent entities collectively contribute with vast territory and regional heterogeneity. Existing studies only present production‐based inventories; state‐level consumption‐based emissions patterns and driving forces remain rare. Here, we built the Russia state‐level Multi‐regional input‐output table to ascertain heterogeneity in consumption‐based emissions and track carbon flows in the inter‐state. We found that 60% of consumption‐based emissions coming from affluent areas (top 20% of the GRP), including Moscow (139.1 Mt) and St. Petersburg (50.5 Mt). Energy‐intensive regions also had huge consumption‐based emissions (31.6 Mt in Khanty‐Mansi Autonomous Okrug and 29.4 Mt in Republic of Tatarstan). Household consumption emissions accounted for 41%–73% of consumption‐based emissions in the 83 regions, except for Tula and Lipetsk, where fixed capital formation dominated. In addition, the major contributor of embodied emissions in households were power and services sectors, which contributed about 8%–61% (0.03 Mt–12.7 Mt) and 12%–40% (0.1 Mt–20.1 Mt). In Russia's low carbon transition, policymakers should not only focus on a local mitigation policy in developed states (such as Moscow and St. Petersburg), but on key sectors to curb the consumption. Regions with high carbon intensity should switch to renewable energy and implement cleaner production techniques in high‐emission industries.

Novel Evaluation Method for Cleaner Production Audit in Industrial Parks: Case of a Park in Central China

With respect to peak carbon and carbon neutrality, China’s economic structure is developing towards low carbonization, circulation, and cleanliness. There is an urgent need to expand the scope of cleaner production audits, improve cleaner production efficiency, and promote cleaner production through regional coordination. The 14th Five-Year National Cleaner Production Implementation Plan proposed selecting 100 parks or industrial clusters to conduct an overall cleaner production audit innovation pilot. To promote the coordinated development of cleaner production areas, this study constructed a set of cleaner production index systems for industrial parks, established an evaluation model based on the binary semantic evaluation method, and selected an industrial park in central China as an audit pilot. The binary group θ1=(2, −0.1084) of the rating results was determined to be a cleaner production park. Based on the evaluation results, the clean production potential of the park was analyzed, and suggestions for clean production were put forward. Sixteen representative enterprises in the park were selected to build twenty-one ecological chains, providing reasonable suggestions for constructing a systematic and circular enterprise symbiosis network.

Stakeholders’ Attitude in Implementing Cleaner Production: Case of The Pharmaceutical Industry in Jakarta

The medicines production process in the pharmaceutical industry, especially in herbal medicines, impacts natural resources and environmental pollution. Implementing cleaner production (CP) can be a profitable solution for companies. Stakeholders’ attitudes toward implementing CP are needed to achieve a sustainable pharmaceutical industry. This research was conducted at the Company X, a pharmaceutical industry that produces herbal medicines located in DKI Jakarta Province. This research aims to identify and analyze stakeholder attitudes toward CP as assessed based on knowledge, responses, and practices through a questionnaire. The sample was conducted on 122 stakeholders participating in production and environmental management activities, including the Manager, Supervisor, and Staff. The results show that all stakeholders’ knowledge, responses, and practices have a good average criteria. The most significant number of stakeholders who were respondents were production staff at 37.7%. From the results of this research, it is hoped that all respondents will know the herbal medicine production process and implement CP at Company X.

Cleaner production practices, implementation concerns and measurement: A systematic literature review

AbstractThis study conducts a systematic literature review to investigate the state of the art of Cleaner Production (CP) across various dimensions. First, we categorize and discuss CP practices within distinct domains, including Product Change, Change Input Materials, Technology Change, Reuse Material On‐site, and Improved Housekeeping. Subsequentially, we map and analyze the phases of CP implementation – including the planning, pre‐assessment, assessment, and implementation options – underscoring the pivotal role of senior management commitment, multidisciplinary teams, and employee training. Lastly, we delve into multiple facets of CP evaluation, covering corporate governance, measurement of CP practices, benefits of CP implementation, evaluation of CP projects, and the instruments employed. We also pinpoint contradictions and research gaps in the field and propose diverse avenues for future research. This research makes significant contributions by synthesizing, integrating and discussing existing CP categories, highlighting trends and gaps in the literature, and offering practical insights to industry practitioners, policymakers, and organizations.

Bacterial nanocellulose, a sustainable alternative, to implement cleaner production in the design of biosensors to detect heavy metals in surface waters

While high productivity is positive for growth in developing countries, environmental balance and moderation in pollution levels must be taken into consideration. The dumping of highly harmful industrial waste into river beds, streams, groundwater tables and underground freshwater reservoirs is a clear disadvantage when thinking about sustainable processes. Putting the environment first, we wonder how many thousands of liters of vinase and toxic waste run through our watersheds to end up reusing some bagasse to extract vegetal origin cellulose. It is not about demonizing the product, but rather applying cleaner production technologies to obtain it in a sustainable and ecologically friendly way. The main objective of this review is to propose nanocellulose of bacterial origin as an inert support material for biosensors that detect heavy methals on surface waters. This alternative is sustainable, resistant to temperature and high humidity levels, optical transparency, porous nanostructure and possibilities for surface functionalization. This material has advantages over vegetable cellulose, not only functional, but also from the aforementioned environmental perspective. Heavy metals contamination on surface waters is a global problem. The development of reliable, lightweight and portable biosensors is a necessity for in situ detection of the degree of contamination, without the need for cumbersome and often complex sample taking. The performance of a biosensor depends on its ability to immobilize receptors, maintaining their natural activity, against targets in solution, as is the case of our interest. When we propose bacterial nanocellulose as a support it is due to its ability to form covalent bonds and trap by cross-linking. Although due to their high surface area per unit of volume, physical methods are also a possibility that provides versatility of processes that adapt to multiple biosensor formats. Each new discovery of the potential functionalization for bacterial nanocellulose allows us to think of new, more efficient, more environmentally friendly sensors for a multitude of applications. As the contamination of water with heavy metals increases alarmingly due to over-industrialization, it is time to ask ourselves about the cognitive dissonance of using cellulose obtained by traditional means and the aforementioned contamination that they carry to generate sensors to measure the degree of pollution that we generate when producing it.

Cleaner production and total factor productivity of polluting enterprises

The green and high-quality development of China's manufacturing industry requires the implementation of cleaner production practices. This study constructs a cleaner production index for polluting enterprises based on the detailed indicators of industrial cleaner production standards. Using data from the Green Development Database and the Industrial Enterprise Database from 1998 to 2012, this study analyzes the influence, transmission mechanism, and heterogeneity effect of the cleaner production index on the total factor productivity of polluting enterprises. The results show that improving the cleaner production index of polluting enterprises promotes total factor productivity, and this conclusion remains valid after taking several robustness tests. The improvement of the cleaner production index of polluting enterprises brings the demand for skilled labor and equipment capital containing technological progress, and the improvement of productivity comes from the capital-embodied technological progress which is complementary to the skill demand and skill premium. The study also finds that increasing the cleaner production index of polluting enterprises has a greater promoting effect on the total factor productivity of heavily polluting industries, large-scale enterprises, and enterprises in the western region. The improvement of the cleaner production index of polluting enterprises increases total factor productivity of state-owned and private enterprises but has no effect on foreign enterprises. These findings provide empirical evidence and policy implications for promoting high-quality development of the manufacturing industry through cleaner production governance, highlighting the importance of implementing cleaner production practices, introducing advanced production equipment, and skilled workers to achieve economies of scale and increase total factor productivity.

Does Environmental Regulation of Cleaner Production Affect the Position of Enterprises in Global Value Chains? A Quasi-Natural Experiment Based on the Implementation of Cleaner Production

Present-day supply-side structural reform in China places an abundance of emphasis on environmental protection. In this paper, we re-measure the upstreamness of Chinese enterprises in global value chains as described by Ni Hongfu (2022). Subsequently, the impact of environmental regulations on the global value chain position of Chinese firms is studied in depth, using the cleaner production standards promulgated and implemented by the Chinese government in 2003 as a quasi-natural experiment, taking a time-varying difference-in-differences (DID) approach. The data sources employed include the Cleaner Production Standard Implementation Industry Directory, the World Input–Output Database (WIOD), the China Industrial Enterprise Database, and the China Customs Import and Export Database. This research discovered the following: First, adopting cleaner production standards significantly improves Chinese enterprises’ positions in the global value chain—a conclusion that holds up to a number of robustness tests. Second, in terms of firm size, capital intensity, ownership characteristics, and government subsidies, there exists a noticeable heterogeneity in the promotion of the adoption of cleaner production standards for the improvement of Chinese enterprises’ global value chain position. Third, the implementation of cleaner production standards stimulates the upgrading of Chinese enterprises’ global value chain position, primarily through the entry and exit impacts, product-switching effect, and innovation compensation effect. The following proposals for policy can be implemented in light of the findings of this paper: “upstream prevention” strategies in the development of future environmental protection and trade policies should be advocated; nuanced and stratified environmental policies should be meticulously constructed; a mix of policies should be employed to bolster the institutional support for green environmental regulations; the integration of environmental governance into the evaluation framework should be emphasized; the creation of an innovation-oriented environmental governance system should be expedited. In conclusion, the findings of this research provide empirical evidence on the role of environmental regulations in coordinating ecological development and strengthening the position of Chinese enterprises in global value chains, which may assist other developing nations in making the transition to a path of high-quality growth.

THE INFLUENCING FACTORS IN CLEANER PRODUCTION ADOPTION ON THE ALUMINIUM PROCESSING INDUSTRY

Cleaner Production (CP) practices comprised environmental strategy perpetually applied in the production, processes, and services to bolster efficiency, safety, and environmental friendliness. Some factors are to be considered to achieve a cleaner production strategy: stakeholders establishment, surveys, utilization, and impact, as well as how the top management devote their practices towards cleaner production. Combining with the mindset of sustainable stocks and resources, this exercise of cleaner production provides advantages of minimum toxic wastes and residues. In this study, we prioritize this practice to be applied in the aluminum industry, of which cleaner production action has not yet been employed. Small and medium businesses now no longer have enough monetary assets to put money into cleaner production practices because they require high-cost investment. This study aimed to determine the factors that have an impact on the application of cleaner production. The method used is regression analysis. The regression analysis results showed that three variables were tested to be significant and had a Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) value of 3.05 which means good. Three variables that affected the implementation of cleaner production include measurement of fuel usage, efforts to improve production process efficiency, and waste reuse by product. From the calculation results, the coefficient of determination (R2) was 0.550 (the influence was quite strong). The results of this study can be used as a recommendation for the government to increase the implementation cleaner production in Jombang Regency.

From cleaner production to sustainability: multiple case studies in Uruguayan companies

Since the concept of cleaner production (CP) considers not only the environment but also the economic and social dimension, additional scholarly attention is focused on studying the relationship of CP to sustainability. This research aims to present the main elements that contribute to successful CP implementation and sustainability in organisations. Eleven companies, mostly SMEs that adopted CP practices after a training course, were selected from different industrial sectors. The main results showed that the critical success factors most often cited for achieving successful implementation are commitment from top management and government support. Although some companies continue to implement sustainable practices, the majority apply CP only to comply with environmental laws, which results in a limited contribution to sustainability. Additionally, the analysed companies do not have standardised metrics to evaluate their sustainable performance, but CP serves as a guide to support their decisions. More effort is needed to make companies aware of the benefits of CP in other areas of organisations, and to integrate the three domains of sustainability when implementing CP practices.

ANALISIS PENERAPAN PRODUKSI BERSIH PADA INDUSTRI NATA DE COCO

The nata de coco processing process produces waste trash in the form of liquid and solid, which is if not properly handled, it can pollute the environment. Proper handling is requires to manage the waste so that it not only lowers the negative impact it has on the environment, but also has a beneficial impact on profit. Cleaner production is an option solution for achieving an environmentally sustainable industry by increasing productivity, maximizing the use of raw resources and reducing waste. In this research, an analysis of the implementation of cleaner production in the nata de coco industry in Bogor City was conducted in numerous stages, including: preparation, planning and organization, process identification, feasibility evaluation, and determination of alternative strategies. Which purpose is to be able to make recommendations in the implementation of cleaner production for industries that are utilized and gain profit on it. From this research, it can be concluded that the underlying aspect is the technical factor from the housekeeping side, which covers the arrangement and preparation of the production flow starting from the purchasing and distribution of raw materials to the technical allocation of products. Handling waste that has gone unnoticed is also a problem in order to improve the cleanliness of the industrial site.

Data-driven cleaner production strategy for energy-intensive manufacturing industries: Case studies from Southern and Northern China

Cleaner production is an effective strategy for improving material utilization, reducing energy consumption, maximizing product output, and minimizing emissions during the entire manufacturing processes. An increasing number of enterprises promote the implementation of cleaner production. In the Industry 4.0 context, product-embedded information devices are widely used to capture product lifecycle data. Product lifecycle management provides an opportunity to achieve cleaner production strategy. This paper presents a data-driven cleaner production strategy by product lifecycle management for energy-intensive manufacturing industries. The data-driven strategy is proposed and explained by the lifecycle of cleaner production data. Implementation models are developed to illustrate the proposed data-driven cleaner production strategy. Furthermore, two case studies from Southern and Northern China are presented to demonstrate the strategy. Results show that the unit energy consumption and the energy cost of production in Company A are reduced by at least 3% after applying the proposed strategy. In addition, the “cradle-to-gate” lifecycle data analysis indicates that the costs of environmental pollution in Company B are diminished significantly. Finally, energy-intensive manufacturing companies in China are compared and evaluated, and the effectiveness of the proposed strategy is discussed.

Analysis of cleaner production potential and water footprint for small-scale sweet potato flour industry

Sweet potato flour is one of the derivative products of sweet potato, especially for raw materials or additives in the food industry. The processing of sweet potato-based products must also be balanced with existing environmental management. For this reason, there is a need for suitable methods to deal with processes that produce minimised wastes that harm the environment. Cleaner production is an approach that offers various environmental benefits for the sweet potato flour industry. Identification of cleaner production alternatives was carried out by the quick scan method for minimising the presence of waste in the sweet potato flour industry. The feasibility of the cleaner production design was analysed by considering technical, environmental, financial, and economic aspects. Identification of water use was done by calculating the water footprint in the whole production process. The water footprint was calculated by adding up the green, blue, and grey water footprints to obtain the total water usage in the production process. The use of water for planting sweet potato (green water) is estimated to be approx. 1.093 m3/ton of sweet potato flour. With a sweet potato flour yield of 50.8%, the production of sweet potato flour requires a water volume (blue water) of 1.32 m3/ton of sweet potato flour. The following cleaner production alternatives were identified as prospective for waste minimisation in the small-scale industry, including good manufacturing practices, repairing flour machines, drying using a greenhouse, training in the selection of raw materials and training in standard operating procedures (SOPs) for flour production, and utilisation of sweet potato peel as animal feed. With the implementation of cleaner production and more efficient use of water, it is expected that the sweet potato flour industry will become a more sustainable industry.

The Opportunities of Cleaner Production in Carica (Carica pubescens) Industry to Reduce Hazardous Waste

Wonosobo regency had many small and medium industries which produced carica fruit into candied carica. In the process of making candied carica by using simple technology, there tented to be inefficient in the use of materials, energy and water. It raised the amount of waste which can cause economic loss and environmental. The implementation could be used as one of the efforts to improve efficiency is cleaner production. This study aimed to identify the process of inefficiencies at each stage in the process of production and to provide alternative opportunities of applying cleaner production in the process of making candied carica. The methods were the observation, direct measurement and interview. The results showed the alternative opportunities of applying cleaner production that uses container vessel while charging syrup in the packaging process and the filtering process results boiling syrup; the application of operational standards of production use of tools and materials; application of good housekeeping; the separation between the solid and liquid waste; reuse used water from sinks, leather waste utilization for composting. The benefits of economic and environmental that derived from the application of cleaner production is the use of container vessel in the packaging process and filtered the boiled syrup IDR. 1,200,000 savings/ month and reduced liquid waste as much as 240 liters/ month. Reuse of washing water used could save IDR. 380,424/ month and reduce liquid waste as much as 110.268 liters / month. Utilization of the skin as compost obtained profits IDR. 2,220,000/ month and reduced solid waste 3,600 kg/ month. Thus, the implementation of cleaner production improved economic and environmental benefits of reduced waste formation

Overcoming Barriers to the Implementation of Cleaner Production in Small Enterprises in the Mechanics Industry: Exploring Economic Gains and Contributions for Sustainable Development Goals

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the economic and environmental gains that result from the implementation of cleaner production in a small enterprise (SE) from the metal and mechanics industry, allowing for overcoming barriers and contributing to sustainable development goals. The research work builds on a case study that involved several data sources, including semi structured interviewing and non-participant observation. Data analysis involved the calculation of mass balance, building solid and liquid waste that were minimized in the process. The results suggest that cleaner production led to economic gains, by allowing for reduction in losses and promoting a better use of raw materials. It also led to environmental improvements by means of the implementation of a wastewater treatment station that allowed for the reuse of water in the manufacturing process. It was concluded that the economic gain in the project played a determinant role for the SE to overcome the barriers for the implementation of CP and leading to the reduction of the environmental impact in the abiotic, biotic, water and air compartments, as estimated with the Mass Intensity Factor. The study offers a timely and relevant contribution for the literature in the field, while offering insights for o managerial practice, and the attainment of the Sustainable Development Goals defined by the United Nations Development Program.

KAJIAN IMPLEMENTASI PELUANG PRODUKSI BERSIH PADA INDUSTRI KERTAS SACK KRAFT PT X

Waste minimisation in paper industry activities can be done by applying cleaner production methods. The objective of this research was to study of opportunity of cleaner production implementation in sack kraft industry. These stages of research were identification of process stages, identification of problems, identification of cleaner production opportunities, feasibility analysis of technical, environmental and financial aspects, and election priority cleaner production opportunities with Exponential Comparison Method (ECM). The processes of the sack kraft production included stock preparation, sheet formation, pressing section, drying section, scrolling and cutting. These Sack Kraft Industry used 110 tonnes of cardboard afval and produced 90.742 tonnes of sack kraft, 3.65 tonnes failed paper, 2.443 tonnes scattered paper, 4.915 tonnes defected paper and 8.25 tonnes solid waste in the form of plastic and metal. The problems often had been occured were downtime machine, broken machine, solid waste production, failed paper, scattered paper, and defected paper. Recommendation of cleaner production opportunities were making pellets from solid waste as fuel substitution (PBP 0.1 years and B/C 8.31), application of Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for machine maintenance (PBP 3.9 years and B/C 1.3), Good manufacturing practice training (PBP 0.63 years and B/C 2.58). The priority order of cleaner production using ECM was application of SOP for machine maintenance, GMP training, and making pellets as fuel substitution. (Re)layout as a Strategy for Implementing Cleaner Production: Proposal for a Furniture Industry Company

This article includes the proposal of a (re)layout project as a strategy to implement Cleaner Production (CP) practices, with a furniture manufacturing company in the Brazilian municipality of Palhoça (Santa Catarina, Brazil) as a case study. This work is characterized as applied research, using a multi-methodological approach, being subdivided into two different steps: literature review and case study. The (re)layout project led to an increase of the administrative area by 25.18%, having had a positive impact on the management areas, aiming towards the integration of Environmental Management, ecodesign, Production Planning and Control sectors. The project led to a decrease of the total stock area of raw materials/storage by 70.01 m2, representing a reduction of 25.59% when compared to the previous area. The project resulted in an increase of the plant production capacity, increasing the production area by 33.33%, thus optimizing areas and sectors, combining those which are inter-related.
