Assessment of the efficiency of functioning of the environmental management system of enterprises

Purpose. A multifactor model is developed to assess the efficiency level of an enterprise’s environmental management system, depending on the effectiveness of organizational environmental measures. Methodology. The authors’ method for determining a comprehensive criterion for monitoring the effectiveness of the environmental management system, which characterizes the efficiency of operation and determines the level of environmental safety of enterprises, is proposed and used. To solve the tasks, a complex research method was also used, which included the analysis and generalization of literary and patent sources, and analytical, experimental research using computer and mathematical modeling methods. Findings. According to the studies and calculations of the generalized environmental quality indicator – 0.64, 0.66 and 0.66, the largest negative impact on the environment is caused by the activities of enterprises in the Pecherskyi, Podilskyi, and Solomianskyi districts of Kyiv, respectively. The obtained data testify to the relationship between the effectiveness of the implemented environmental measures (saving and rational use of resources, application of environmental technologies, advanced training, and environmental competence of employees) and the level of efficiency of the environmental management system of enterprises. Originality. As a result of the studies conducted using actual data, a system of indicators of the generalized environmental quality indicator has been proposed for the first time, which allows determining the environmental efficiency and effectiveness of the implemented environmental measures to assess the effectiveness of the functioning of the implemented environmental management system of the enterprise. Practical value. Based on the research results, a technique is proposed to assess the effectiveness of the environmental management system of enterprises by determining a generalized environmental quality indicator in terms of reducing the negative impact of the enterprise’s activities on the environment. Such an assessment system will help the management of the enterprise to promptly introduce corrective actions to improve the efficiency of the environmental management system and increase the level of environmental safety.

ERIMS assessment Tool Enhances Emergency Response in WHO Europe Region

Abstract Issue/problem The implementation of an Emergency Response Information Management System (ERIMS) assessment tool improves health emergency responses within the World Health Organization - European Region. The tool’s deployment aims to refine data management processes and bolster preparedness strategies. Managing health information systems (HIS) effectively during emergencies is a persistent challenge, as technologies keep innovating and potential challenges are constant. The ERIMS assessment tool addresses this by offering a structured approach, ensuring improved emergency responses and system resilience. Description of the problem Adopting a systems approach, the ERIMS tool was designed to be flexible, allowing adaptation to various HIS architectures and emergency coordination mechanisms. Its design and development process included consultations with digital health and emergency management experts and field testing across three WHO member states. Results Field applications of the ERIMS assessment tool demonstrated its capacity to evaluate, including, digital capability and knowledge management with focus on emergency scenarios. The tool identified systemic gaps, offered strategic guidance on enhancing data processes, and fortified decision-making protocols. These outcomes not only highlighted the tool’s utility in assessing HIS readiness but also its impact in improving emergency response mechanisms. Lessons The deployment of the ERIMS assessment tool enhanced HIS by providing an evaluation of emergency preparedness and response capabilities with a focus at the national perspective level. The tool’s application showcased its role in advancing public health emergency preparedness, illustrating how assessments can lead to substantial improvements in health information management and emergency response readiness. Key messages • ERIMS assessment implementation improves emergency data management. • Better preparedness relies on boosting digital capabilities and knowledge management.

Two Accreditation Options for Biorepositories.

Biomedical research relies on available biomaterials and associated data, and the quality of this starting material can have a significant impact on the quality of the experimental results. In the 2000s, best-practice documents and guidelines for biorepositories were published, followed in the 2010s by standards documents used to support accreditation. The College of American Pathologists Biorepository Accreditation Program and the International Standards Organization's standard 20387 were launched in 2012 and 2018, respectively. To identify quantitative and qualitative differences between the two aforementioned biorepository accreditation standards for use by the larger biomedical research community; the results will empower biorepositories to select an accreditation program that best fits their goals. Individual requirements of both accreditation standards were identified and a bidirectional crosswalk was performed to identify gaps. Requirements were assigned to one of several standardized categories to enable comparison of the relative emphasis of different categories between the standards. Quantitatively, the College of American Pathologists program is comprehensive and stands alone, with 523 requirements, whereas the International Standards Organization program contains 167 requirements and is comprehensive through its incorporation and reference to numerous related standards documents. Qualitatively, both programs rely heavily on the implementation of an overarching quality management system and both programs can accommodate different types of biobanks (eg, human and animal). The standards differ in number of requirements, distribution of requirements across categories, and amount of reliance on separate standard documents. This information may aid in selection of an appropriate accreditation standard.

Exploring work engagement of public sector employees during the COVID-19 pandemic, Namibia

Orientation: In Namibia, the public sector employs a majority of employees which contributes to significant economic growth and development of the country.Research purpose: This study investigated the association among job satisfaction, burnout and work engagement. This study explored if work engagement is experienced differently based on the biographical variables.Motivation for the study: Namibia aims to achieve the sustainable development goals (SDGs), Harambee Prosperity Plan (HPP) and National Development Goals. The state-owned enterprises are required to provide quality services to the nation through their employees. The health and well-being of these employees facilitate the productivity of these state-owned enterprises (SDGs 1, 2, 3, 8, 11 and 16).Research approach/design and method: A total of n = 130 public sector employees were randomly selected and responded to a questionnaire. The questionnaire included demographic questions, the Job Satisfaction Survey, the Maslach Burnout Inventory and the Utrecht Work Engagement Scale. Data analysis was performed through the Statistical Package for Social Sciences software to test the hypotheses of the study.Main findings: Positive relationships were found between job satisfaction, burnout and work engagement. Work engagement reported a positive relationship with burnout. Work engagement is experienced the same in relation to the biographical variables.Practical/managerial implications: The study suggests a constant evaluation of job attitudes, implementation of effective performance management systems, team building activities and implementation of workplace wellness programmes.Contribution/value-add: This study adds to the understanding of job satisfaction, burnout and work engagement within state-owned enterprises in Namibia.

Design and Testing of a Web-Based Student Information Management System

Politeknik Piksi Ganesha is an institution of higher learning located in Bandung, Indonesia, specializing in engineering and technological curricula. The research's general objective is to describe the design and implementation of the web-based Student Information Management System (SIMS) to manage student data at Politeknik Piksi Ganesha Bandung. The functional and non-functional specifications are represented using Unified Modeling Language (UML) based on broad data collection through observation, interviews, and a literature review. It also entails black-box testing, which measures the system's performance against set criteria, focusing on the output without the details of its internal workings. The significant findings indicate that SIMS enhances highly administrative processes, accuracy in data, and good communication among stakeholders by applying clear UML diagrams of the system. This successful system development meets the institution's requirements and adds to the bar for other developments within the educational technology sector. The result has also emphasized the need for practical design methodologies and testing frameworks to develop reliable information systems to improve decision-making in academic institutions. The research has contributed significantly to the discipline because it has shown how different technological innovations can alleviate the problems surrounding managing student information at higher education levels.

Determinants of Government Procurement Fraud Prevention with Organizational Commitment and Ethical Culture as Moderating Variables

This study aims to analyze the various factors that influence the prevention of procurement fraud, including the implementation of the Anti-Bribery Management System (ABMS), Government Internal Control System (SPIP), and the role of the Internal Compliance Unit (UKI), with organizational commitment and ethical culture as moderators. It employs a quantitative causal approach, with data collected through surveys and analyzed using Partial Least Square-Structural Equation Modelling (PLS-SEM). The results demonstrate that the implementation of ABMS, SPIP, and UKI positively impacts the prevention of procurement fraud. Organizational commitment and ethical culture strengthen the influence of SPIP implementation, while ethical culture weakens the role of UKI in preventing fraud. ABMS, SPIP, and UKI are crucial in fraud prevention, but their effectiveness is enhanced by a strong commitment to ethics. While organizational commitment strengthens SPIP's preventive effects, a strong ethical culture may reduce the reliance on UKI in fraud prevention. These findings underscore the importance of comprehensive anti-fraud measures such as the implementation of ABMS, SPIP, and the establishment of UKI in preventing procurement fraud

The Influence of Information Security Management System Implementation on the Financial Performance of Indian Companies: Examining the Moderating Effect of National Culture

The extensive focus on information technology (IT) within organizations, along with the substantial significance of information security issues, has made information security a top priority for executives. The International Organization for Standardization 27001 (ISO-27001) policy outlines the requirements for an effective Information Security Management System (ISMS). Implementing an ISMS not only enhances the overall profitability of a firm, but it also has a significant impact in various scenarios. In this study, we examined how ISMS implementation can assist corporations financially, with a specific focus on the moderating effect of Indian national culture. We analyzed financial performance following ISMS and ISO-27001 implementation using sample data from 420 Indian small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). By analyzing 256 survey questionnaires from 420 SMEs, we found that national culture amplifies the strong interaction between ISMS implementation and SME performance in India. We found that ISMS implementation increased the profitability of recognized Indian firms, supporting study hypotheses. The findings provide valuable insights for SMEs seeking to enhance financial performance through ISMS implementation, emphasizing the moderating role of national culture in shaping these outcomes.

The use of devices to test for errors is a necessity for many companies, especially those that are being developed programs to improve performance of manufacturing processes, in this article, the implementation of Quality Management Systems (SGQ) of companies the domestic market in the aerospace industry. One way of achieving this goal can be achieved through the implementation and use of the PDCA cycle as a tool Poka Yoke, and this is a long established concept by Japanese companies as an effective tool to achieve zero defect and, if proposed SGQ one, eliminating the possibility of recurrence of the error factor. The main premise is linked to the concept PDCA ";Acting on a planned, controlled, and respond continuously, repeatedly and, as the concept of Poka Yoke is that human error is unavoidable, but can be eliminated by preventing that a failure will to become a defect in the case and PDCA, to be repeated. This article describes the concepts involving the PDCA cycle, its basic functions and methods that can be used to prevent and detect errors and defects. Which are also exploited the main difficulties encountered in the implementation of the concepts related to PDCA, and the needs of cultural adaptation and involvement of people.

Implementation of Information System at SD Laboratorium UNG

This research aims to find out the implementation of the human resource information system at SD Laboratorium UNG. The purpose of the information system is to help organize all functional areas of human resource management efficiently. SD Laboratorium UNG is a school that has been accredited as superior. This mini-research was conducted using a qualitative approach and data collection techniques in the form of observation, interviews, and documentation, and data presentation was carried out using a descriptive approach, in the form of words, writing, or oral from the subjects observed, namely the principal and teachers. Based on the mini research that has been carried out, the results show that the implementation of the Human Resource Management System at SD Laboratorium UNG has been carried out, but it has not been carried out optimally, but the school has been able to utilize the development of information and communication technology for the progress of the school towards a better direction. The applications used at SD Laboratorium UNG are Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, Email, Zoom, Google Drive, WhatsApp, Ms.Word, Ms.Exel, and JunioSmart.

UK national survey on nuclear medicine in-house clinical software: the calm before the storm.

The use of in-house developed software as a medical device (IHD-SaMD) is core to many nuclear medicine (NM) services in the UK, including applications in nonimaging studies and image processing. Expected regulatory changes in 2025 could have significant implications due to a lack of resources and expertise in the implementation and maintenance of software Quality Management Systems (QMS) and associated standards. This survey investigated the national use of IHD-SaMD and the readiness of services to adapt to the upcoming regulatory changes. An online survey was used to investigate the current national usage of IHD-SaMD. Representatives of 64 UK NM physics services were invited to participate, with 43 responding. It was found that 98% of respondents use IHD-SaMD clinically. About 65% use IHD-SaMD that respondents felt was under-supported (e.g. legacy software). Approximately 60% of respondents use or support two or more pieces of IHD-SaMD. Around 66% of respondents use a QMS in their department, with about 48% using a software-specific QMS. Most respondents indicate understaffing, particularly with regard to IT/software skillsets. Almost all respondents indicate without an increase in the preparedness and understanding of the requirements, all dependent clinical services would be severely impacted or indeed stopped. This national survey shows that pending regulatory changes could significantly impact NM services, up to and including stopping clinical services. Additional resources would be required to support in-house software management under an appropriate QMS or move to European conformity marking (CE)-marked software where available. This must be urgently considered and addressed by all NM stakeholders.

Performance measurement and management in complex environments: a system of systems approach for the public sector

Issues related to rapidly changing digital environments and turbulent or complex settings, such as the public sector, often hinder successful implementations of Performance Measurement and Management (PMM) systems. Despite the availability of PMM methods, the challenge of implementing successful systems in turbulent settings persists. This article introduces a novel PMM framework employing a System of Systems (SoS) approach, integrating Data Envelopment Analysis and Machine Learning to guide organisational changes by enhancing the efficiency of Decision-Making Units (DMU). Validated by a case study within the Brazilian Navy, the framework demonstrates a significant capacity to interpret the impact of DMU characteristics on operational efficiency and draw actionable insights. Our findings suggest that leveraging SoS principles emphasises adaptability and ongoing improvement through a data-driven process, suggesting the framework’s potential to navigate through complexity by enabling more effective management practices and decision-making. Future research directions include longitudinal studies and the incorporation of technologies to support managerial decision-making.

‘I’d Give My Right Arm to Be Ambidextrous’: Exploration Unit Managers Facing Competing Demands for Differentiation and Integration

This paper examines how managers of internal exploration units – also labeled as innovation labs – address the competing demands of differentiation and integration over time, and the implications for their unit’s ability to execute its intended exploration strategy. Based on a longitudinal study of four exploration units implemented by established firms, we find that their managers face two types of undocumented paradoxical tensions: one related to the evolution of the mandated charter and the other related to the implementation of the performance management system. In response, we show that exploration unit managers adopt four balancing patterns to face these paradoxical tensions: decoupling, conforming, promoting, and synchronizing. These patterns consist of specific combinations of differentiating and/or integrating practices. Drawing on paradox research, we show how each pattern facilitates or impedes the pursuit of the unit’s intended exploration strategy. Our research contributes to the development of a more integrative and systemic understanding of the locus of structural ambidexterity and how it is pursued in practice, and to current debates about the different types of responses adopted when faced with paradoxes. Finally, we provide managerial insights into the management of exploration units and innovation labs within established firms.

Assessing the Impact of Digital Transformation on Business Operations: A Case Study Analysis

This study assesses the impact of digital transformation on business operations through a case study of Zivame, an Indian SME in the retail sector. The research aims to explore how digital technologies improve operational efficiency, customer engagement, and financial performance. Using qualitative research methods, semi-structured interviews were conducted with key decision-makers at Zivame. Thematic analysis was employed to analyze the data. The results indicate significant operational improvements, including a reduction in order fulfillment time and increased inventory turnover. Customer satisfaction and repeat purchase rates also improved substantially following the implementation of Customer Relationship Management (CRM) systems and other digital tools. Zivame faced challenges such as employee resistance to change and high initial investment costs, which were mitigated through targeted employee training programs. The financial analysis revealed a growing return on investment (ROI) from 31% in 2020 to 44% in 2023. The study’s findings underscore the importance of digital transformation for Indian SMEs, showing that, with strategic planning and investment, businesses can improve their competitiveness and achieve long-term success. These findings contribute to the broader literature on digital transformation in emerging markets and offer practical insights for SMEs embarking on similar journeys.

The Safety Management System (SMS) As A Tool for Building Safety Culture in Aviation: A Qualitative Research

Safety culture is conceptualized as the combination of beliefs, values, norms, attitudes, roles, and practices—both social and technical—within an organization, aimed at mitigating the exposure to adverse or hazardous conditions for both internal and external individuals. In entities where a safety culture is deeply ingrained, efforts are made to formulate a framework that encourages employee adherence to safety regulations, promoting safe behaviours, particularly in high-risk environments. The efficacy of safety culture in substantially reducing accidents, incidents, errors, hazards, and risks, especially those related to human factors, is pivotal in attaining elevated safety standards. At the heart of fostering such a culture lies the implementation of a robust Safety Management System (SMS), which, through its effective and dynamic execution, paves the way for cultivating a safety-centric ethos. This study conducts a detailed empirical analysis of aviation enterprises in Türkiye to evaluate the hypothesis that the Safety Management System (SMS) is a crucial instrument in cultivating a safety culture within the aviation industry. The study employs qualitative research methodologies to discern the correlation between the effectiveness of SMS and its components and the level of safety culture within these organizations. Findings from the study reveal a direct relationship where entities with inadequately implemented SMS and its elements exhibit lower levels of safety culture. Conversely, enterprises that demonstrate effective implementation of SMS are characterized by a high level of safety culture, affirming the critical role of SMS in fostering safety within aviation organizations. This inquiry not only substantiates the integral role of SMS in developing a safety culture in aviation but also highlights the necessity for meticulous implementation of SMS components and processes to achieve a superior safety standard in the industry.

EVOLUTIONARY TRANSFORMATION OF THE QUALITY ASSURANCE SYSTEM OF DEFENSE GOODS, SERVICES AND WORKS IN UKRAINE

It is inadvisable to limit the quality assurance system for defense-related goods/services/works solely to a set of mechanisms; it must necessarily encompass vertical and horizontal connections both among the relevant functional blocks (subsystems) and between the entities involved in their operation. In the context of not only geopolitical challenges but also the ongoing daily struggle against an aggressor state, it is critically important to establish an effective and efficient system for controlling the quality of defense-related goods/services/works. This article is dedicated to the systematization of the characteristics of transformational changes and the outlining of methodological foundations for the effective functioning of the quality assurance system for defense- related goods, works, and services in Ukraine. A conceptual three-level model of the quality assurance system for defense-related goods, services, and works has been formulated by distinguishing the essential parameters of their operation at the global, national, and micro levels. The peculiarities of forming a quality assurance system for defense-related products at both the micro and macro levels have been justified. It has been emphasized that the effectiveness of the evolutionary transformation of the quality assurance system for defense-related products at all levels of its representation should be characterized by the penetration of market forces into the mechanism of its operation. Attention has been drawn to the substantive directions for implementing the requirements of NATO standards in the AQAP series (AQAP 2110) within the framework of a corporate quality management system in accordance with ISO 9001. Since there are no legal or legislative requirements mandating the implementation of quality management systems, the enhancement and improvement of the efficiency of internal business and production processes should be a direct concern of the enterprise itself, driven by market forces. At the same time, the state should create stimulating mechanisms, for instance, by employing soft regulation; in military procurement specifications, it should mandate the presence of a certificate of compliance with AQAP requirements for the enterprises involved. The expected effects of the transformation of the studied system include economic, organizational, and worldview effects. A comparative analysis of the evolutionary transformation of the quality assurance system for defense-related goods, services, and works has been conducted based on the following criteria: the object and subject of control; the function performed by the control subject; the breadth of the controlling institution’s functionality; the perimeter of the controlling institution’s authority; the level of depth of control; and the level of subordination of the controlling institution to the Ministry of Defense. Despite the complexity of the task declared at the state level regarding the functioning of the state guarantee system for the quality of defense-related products, which is influenced not only by objective factors but also by worldview factors, its implementation has the potential to significantly enhance the quality of Ukraine’s defense products and substantially improve Ukraine’s rankings in terms of transparency, institutional maturity, and the ecological soundness of economic relations in the defense sector.

Maximising Synergy: The Benefits of a Joint Implementation of Knowledge Management and Artificial Intelligence System Standards

Implementing management systems in organisations of all types and sizes often raises the following question: “What benefits will this bring?” Initial resistance and criticism are common as potential challenges are identified during the implementation process. To address this, it is essential to highlight the advantages of these systems and engage stakeholders in supporting management efforts. While the planning, implementation, use, maintenance, auditing, and improvement of management systems are generally voluntary, certification is frequently driven by external factors, particularly customer demands. Employees also stand to gain significantly, with knowledge and information serving as valuable resources, especially for leveraging artificial intelligence. This article explores the management’s readiness to adopt and fully utilise two management systems based on international standards: the ISO 30401 Knowledge management system (KMS) and the ISO/IEC 42001 Artificial intelligence management system (AIMS). Through interviews, we assess the challenges and solutions associated with implementing these systems, whether planned or partially adopted. The findings illustrate the synergistic benefits of integrating the KMS and AIMS, demonstrating how their combined use can enhance Integrated Management Systems (IMSs). Such integration supports comprehensive planning, operation, and performance evaluation of processes and services while also promoting continuous improvement.

This paper describes the implementation of an information management system for the Administration of Casas de Paz through the Access software with the aim of having better control with the data of this ministry. The program was developed together with the different diagrams that are a support for its development, in turn the data dictionary was made to facilitate the use of the program. By means of the Data System, better control will be obtained regarding attendance, where they are located, in turn to facilitate the location of a new member in the church and having the information of the leaders of each one of the Casas de Paz.
