Analysis of bridge structure selection using a hybrid decision-making technique

Implementation of sustainability principles in civil engineering has increased the substantive range of bridge engineering. The consideration of additional criteria, in particular ecological and social ones, requires the design process to be supported by appropriate tools. It refers especially to large bridge elements which affect their load-bearing capacity, e.g. girders or decks. The aim of this paper is to develop an original MCDA (Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis) method as a potential tool to support a decision-making process in the selection of material and design alternatives for bridge main girders. Therefore, an advanced hybrid algorithm was created consisting of the following methods: EA FAHP+FDEMATEL+ZUM (Extent Analysis Fuzzy Analytic Hierarchy Process + Fuzzy Decision-Making Trial and Evaluation Laboratory + Zero Unitarization Method), applied at the structure design stage. The pre-dimensioned alternatives selected for analysis were then subjected to an evaluation process based on a complex set of criteria arranged in a hierarchical control structure (HCS). The algorithm has been applied based on the example of a medium span slab-and-girder bridge, assuming 6 alternative concepts of girders, different in material and dimensions. The hybrid method was compared with the EA FAHP method. Analysis results obtained based on judgments from 3 teams of Decision Makers (DM) indicate effectiveness of the proposed algorithm and its practical aspect, which may contribute to improved quality and safety of bridge structures.

Implementation of sustainability principles in landscape architecture education: an examination of faculty attitudes and course syllabi

Purpose This study aims to investigate the integration of education for sustainable development (ESD) into landscape architecture (LA) programs in North American universities to understand its benefits and challenges and provide insights into the implementation of sustainability principles, pedagogies and teaching methods. Design/methodology/approach This study analyzed survey data from 128 LA faculty members from 85 Council of Educators in Landscape Architecture member schools. The survey assessed the implementation of sustainability principles, pedagogies, teaching benefits and challenges to integrating sustainability into their courses. To complement the survey data, 62 LA course syllabi were analyzed using a grounded theory approach to identify the topics covered, learning objectives and learning activities. Findings The study revealed that LA programs incorporate sustainability topics in various courses using project-based and interdisciplinary learning approaches. Integrating ESD into LA curricula promotes sustainability literacy, improved understanding of sustainability concepts and the development of sustainability skills. The study also found positive correlations between teaching methods, the enhancement of sustainability literacy and the development of design and planning skills. Originality/value This research examined the effects of teaching methods on student learning outcomes and the challenges instructors faced, providing practical insights into the integration of ESD in LA education. It offers recommendations to enhance the ESD knowledge of future LA practitioners, considering the inclusion of ESD as a core value of the standard by the Landscape Architectural Accreditation Board.

The Construction of Sustainable Palm Oil Image In Naga Naga Naga Film

The focal subject of examination is a film that portrays the establishment of palm oil plantations, while the use of Berger-Luckmann's social construction theory serves as two key factors that emphasize the importance of this research. The film "Naga Naga Naga" narrates the tale of Nagabonar's granddaughter, who encounters educational difficulties. This research employs a descriptive-qualitative approach to elucidate the concurrent processes and dialectics of externalization, objectivation, and internalization. The researcher gathered data by conducting observations of the Naga Naga Naga film in theaters and evaluating various sequences using a subscription-based streaming platform. By employing Charles S. Peirce's semiotic approach to analyze, the finding showed that not just the underlying motivations behind the signs and meanings associated with the implementation of sustainability principles, such as environmental harmony and community care, but also identifies components of "artistic and logical narrative" that impact the process of constructing a mental representation of palm oil farms. These findings are highly valuable for formulating campaign strategies that utilize films to shape public awareness.

A sustainability-oriented methodology to compare production strategies: The case of AM-based remanufacturing

The implementation of sustainability principles is becoming fundamental for companies, also for creating added value in the production processes. Production managers should not consider only the economic-financial aspects in their decisions, but also the environmental and social implications to extend the benefits to all current and future world populations. This vision requires to develop and apply sustainability-oriented methodologies to compare alternative production strategies. This paper contributes to addressing this problem by proposing a methodology that allows comparing different production strategies by considering their sustainable impact, starting with the definition of their processes. An aggregated sustainability index has been designed for this purpose. Thus, the paper contributes to the literature on the evaluation of sustainability through the development of a methodology, which can be used by the practitioners as a decision support tool to identify the most sustainable production strategy according to the objective of the company and the specific production process considered. Then, the proposed methodology has been applied to compare two different production strategies, i.e., AM-based remanufacturing and the production of new components. A simulation model has been implemented to reproduce the behaviour of the two competing production strategies. Although the results depend on the utilized data, this application showed that it is possible to distinguish different areas of convenience for each strategy. Moreover, findings revealed that the sustainability of the production strategies is strictly connected to the adopted technology and the importance given to the economic, environmental and social aspects by the company.

Long-term experiments with fertilizers-essential fertility changes

The paper presents soil analytical data and their interpretation from samples in long-term experiments as a result of NP, NPK and organo-mineral fertiliser applications in a stationary system for 20 years and wheat-maize-soybean rotation system. The results show that NP fertilisation (from ammonium nitrate and superphosphate) leads to acidification of soils (regardless of soil type) depending on increasing N a.i./ha. The acidification phenomenon is higher in typical preluvosol (taxonomically acidic soil) due to activation of adsorbed (potential) acidity and solubilisation of Al ions, with devolatilisation of adsorbent complex, which updates for this soil the need for correction of the reaction (pH) by means of calcium amendments. In contrast, for the alluvial mollisol, with neutral - weakly alkaline pH and higher humus % and high buffering capacity, the multiannual acidification due to N is reduced. NP, NPK mineral fertilisation, in balanced doses, can maintain the organic-C and humus content constant, balanced, within the specific limits of the soil type over a period of 20 years, with wheat-maize-soybean crop rotation. In contrast, amendment and processing conventional intensive tillage (on maize) decrease the content of these indicators, a phenomenon that can be attributed to the enhanced mineralisation of the soil organic component. Organic and organo-mineral fertilisation can lead to a favourable modelling of humus content. The mobile forms of the essential elements of nutrition and fertilisation (N, P, K) are improved in terms of their bioavailability with the objective that these forms will maintain their quantity and quality at the level required by crops and their supply by fertilisation technologies is ensured rationally and preventively for the soil-plant system. In summary, the analytical results from long-term experiments with fertilisers are of direct benefit to soils, their productivity and fertility, with the implementation of sustainability principles.

Legal Protection On The Sustainable Natural Resource Conservation Management

This research discusses the regulations in Indonesia regarding the legal protection of sustainable natural resources conservation and the implementation of sustainable principles. This research used a statutory approach by examining the rules and laws related to the legal issues discussed. Even though the law has regulated the protection and management of sustainable natural resource conservation, the community still needs to implement the management of natural resources properly and orderly. Then, in order to protect the conservation of natural resources, it must be managed strictly and balanced to become internalized into laws and regulations Based on the description above, the results of the discussion can be concluded that Law Number 5 of 2009 has regulated the protection and management of sustainable natural resource conservation.

Do CEO Behavior Biases and Personal Traits Influence ESG Performance? The Evidence from Emerging Capital Market of Russia

The impact of behavioral biases and personal traits of the CEO on corporate decisions and performance has become the important agenda for management, governance and finance research. But still the empirical evidence on the influence of behavioral biases on the implementation of sustainability principles into company’s strategies is missing not only inemerging markets, but for developed markets as well. We aim to fulfill this gap by findings on the role of behavioral characteristics of a CEO and how they affect the effectiveness of the ESG (Environmental, Social and Corporate Governance) approach to company management in one of the largest emerging capital market of Russia. We first focus on CEO’s optimism,narcissism, self-confidence, and the lack of confidence of the CEO and their impact over ESG performance. To identify behavioral biases, we use textual analysis and the “bag of words” method applied to the written letters to the shareholders by CEOs of Russian companies in 2017–2019 on a sample of 38 companies with official external ESG ratings.
 Our results confirm a significant influence of optimism and narcissism on the effectiveness of the ESG approach, but self-confidence does not appear to be statistically significant. Moreover, our findings prove significance of some personal traits such as industry experience and technical educational background. Our findings validate and complement prior research on personal characteristics of CEOs and provide novel data on the impact on ESG in emerging capital markets.

Competencies or capabilities in the Australian higher education landscape and its implications for the development and delivery of sustainability education

ABSTRACT The question of how to embed transformative change through the implementation of sustainability principles in our education systems has become increasingly important as complex situations, like pandemics and climate change, challenge societies. Education underpinned by a sustainability paradigm requires students to develop the ability to think critically about the nature of knowledge and about the ways in which knowledge is produced and validated. Educating for these skills will require shifts in educational practice, pedagogy and new approaches to learning and teaching. As the relationship between education and sustainability has matured, there has been increasing debate around whether capability or competence frameworks best underlie the type of education we seek to embed in sustainability professionals. Within an Australian context there is a philosophical difference between these two terms and an understanding of how this relates to different typologies of sustainability and education; Education about Sustainable Development, Education for Sustainable Development or Sustainability as Education (Sustainability Education) and this has yet to be fully explored. This is increasingly important as higher education is under pressure to be efficient producers of work-ready graduates. This paper provides an overview of the context of capability and competencies in the Australian higher education context and the associated implications for education, and sustainability education. It compares a competence approach with that of a capability approach and then situates this debate within the evolution of sustainability and education. Finally, it addresses some key consequences of the contemporary approaches to sustainability and education and emphasises the role of the capability approach.

Elaboration of a Mechanism for Sustainable Enterprise Development in Innovation Ecosystems

This paper highlights a sustainability and self-organization perspective of the innovation ecosystems. Such issues as under what conditions self-organization takes place and what mechanisms form an innovation ecosystem in a sustainable way are underexplored in the academic literature. To ensure self-development of actors in the ecosystem, a self-adjustment mechanism is needed that allows implementation of sustainability principles. This article proposes a practical tool for assessing an actor in an ecosystem using the method of analytic hierarchy process (AHP), developed by T. Saaty. It allows for operationalizing the processes of self-organization in the ecosystem without an external intervention and addresses the main implications for sustainable development of innovation industrial ecosystems. The authors illustrate their assumptions with an empirical case study of the industrial ecosystem “Technologies for Improving the Quality of Life” (Moscow, Russia). The propositions arising from this analysis provide information to help academics, policymakers, government, and individual enterprises with a more adequate understanding of the practical mechanisms and tools that help trigger self-organization and sustainable development of the innovation ecosystems.

Analysis of Practices to Increase the Workforce Agility and to Develop a Sustainable and Competitive Business

The current business environment is volatile and complex. Companies must constantly identify creative and environmentally friendly solutions. The emphasis on employees and workforce agility has become an attribute of sustainable and competitive organizations simultaneously. The purpose of our study is to validate the hypothesis that there is a direct positive relationship between ranking as important top position of human resources in a company and the extent to which specific practices to increase workforce agility were adopted. Our survey is based on an original questionnaire, with a 92% response rate. We focused on large, independent decision-making companies from Western Romania, for which the implementation of sustainable principles is more difficult than for multinationals. The statistical analysis was performed using SPSS23 (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences). The results indicate an average extent of the adoption of management practices aiming to increase workforce agility (45%) and a ranking of human resources in first place as the most important resource (31.7%). Using the Pearson Chi-Square Test, the hypothesis was confirmed (significance = 0.026). Our main conclusion is that if managers intend to develop a sustainable and competitive business, they should attribute a strategic role to employees and adopt practices to increase their agility.

ECOMASJID: THE FIRST MILESTONE OF SUSTAINABLE MOSQUE IN INDONESIA

<p>On November 11, 2017, MUI (Indonesian Council of Ulama), DMI (Indonesian Mosque Council) have launched the national program named eco <em>masjid</em>. Eco <em>masjid</em> is a program of sustainable mosque through efforts to preserve the environment and natural resources oriented to on aspects of <em>idarah</em> (management), <em>imarah</em> (prosperity activities), and <em>ri’ayah </em>(maintenance and facilities) which dominantly related to its building. In Indonesia, sustainable building principles are widely promoted by GBCI (Green Building Council Indonesia) and have been applied to various types of buildings. However, it has been realized that the study on the implementation of sustainable principle in the mosque is very rare. The research was carried out qualitatively by using direct observation on the pilot mosque to capture all implemented sustainable building principle. Based on the questionnaire to 44 participants which reflected 44 DKM (Dewan Kemakmuran <em>Masjid</em>), the result came up that applying water efficient faucet, using the LED lamp and sticker posting are the most achievable sustainable practices in the existing mosques. Improving Sustainable Development within Indonesian Palm Oil: The Importance of the Reward System

AbstractNowadays, standards play a central role in the governance of international business relations; palm oil is no exception. The focal issue of palm oil is sustainable processes of production and sourcing, thus multi‐stakeholder initiatives such as the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) set out the sustainability principles and standards, and manage the certification system (CSPO). Empirical evidence based on in‐depth interview with various stakeholders in the Indonesian palm oil industry indicates that the development of the RSPO sustainability standards is perceived to be in favor of a particular interest group due to the asymmetrical power and unbalanced control structure of the stakeholders. Thus the powerful stakeholders are able to exercise imperative power over other stakeholders, to the extent that it actually contradicts the others’ interests. This paper puts forward the notion that a more equitable governance system should be developed through the introduction of the reward system on the CSPO transaction. The reward system can demonstrate the original motivation of the RSPO toward consensus among all stakeholders to equally contribute in the implementation of sustainability Principles and Criteria (P&C) and standards. Despite the numerous researches in the field of sustainable development, the social component of sustainable development of Ukraine is underinvestigated. The research objective. The aim of the article is to investigate the essence of the category “social sustainability”, to define the threats to social sustainability and to determine the strategic directions of socially-oriented development of Ukraine. The statement of basic materials. The essence of the social sustainability is investigated in the article. The review of the results of the assessment of social sustainability, which are presented by international analytical organizations, is performed. The main strategic directions of socially-oriented development of Ukraine are defined. Сonclusions. The definition of national paradigm of sustainable development with taking into account social, cultural, economic and other peculiarities of the country and step-by-step implementation of sustainability principles in all spheres of human activity are important prerequisites for improvement of social wellbeing of the population and formation of socially-oriented market economy in Ukraine.

Multi-stakeholder engagement for sustainable bridge delivery

There is constant pressure for the civil engineering industry to keep improving its cost efficiency. In the meantime, the industry has to operate within an increasingly stringent policy and regulatory environment, more recently driven by the growing commitment to sustainable development. To overcome these challenges often requires more effective collaboration between professionals from different disciplines and wider stakeholder engagement in general. This paper focuses on the bridge engineering sector in the UK and identifies the main areas for improvement in the project delivery process, especially where effective collaboration can play a significant role. The increasing need for effective engagement of the affected community is highlighted and its implications for practising engineers are discussed. Key factors to enable effective collaboration in practice are then considered, with particular attention given to effective community engagement, after which the benefits of effective collaboration and community engagement are demonstrated by way of examples. Attempts are made to highlight some unique challenges brought about for engineers in practice by the implementation of sustainability principles. Key skills are identified to enable engineers to contribute to more sustainable bridge delivery. In order for their actions to be most effective, the development of applications-oriented, bridge-project-specific, best practice guides is proposed.

Applied sustainability in services and operations in higher learning institutions: a case study

In the recent years, sustainability has become a slogan for raising social, economic and environmental awareness. Higher education institutions play an important role in promoting sustainable development principles and practices. In addition to educating students on sustainability topics, these institutions should take on a leadership role in incorporating sustainable practices into their services and operations and in transforming their local and regional communities into more sustainable communities. Grand Valley State University (GVSU) has been very successful in the implementation of sustainability principles. Among many recognitions and awards, the university has received national recognition for Sustainability Innovation in 2008 and 2009. In this paper, we discuss how GVSU successfully integrated sustainability principles into its services and operations. Supporting the choice, siting and evaluation of sustainable drainage systems in new urban developments

The work presented here forms part of the ongoing WaND research initiative in the UK aiming towards the implementation of sustainability principles in the planning of new urban developments. The paper describes the development of a decision support toolbox based on soft computing that assists the selection of promising sustainable drainage systems (SUDS), and their optimal siting within the context of new urban developments, through the creation of spatially variable suitability maps. It is suggested that the decision support toolbox, which includes the tools presented here as well as other tools developed within WaND can assist engineers and developers to take into account engineering, environmental and socio-economic characteristics and constraints in the design of more sustainable "SUDS" schemes.
