Optimal solving of a binary knapsack problem on a D-Wave quantum machine and its implementation in production systems

AbstractThe efficient management of complex production systems is a challenge in today’s logistics. In the field of intelligent and sustainable logistics, the optimization of production batches, especially in the context of a rapidly changing product range, requires fast and precise computational solutions. This paper explores the potential of quantum computers for solving these problems. Traditional computational methods are often limited when it comes to optimizing complex logistics systems. In response to these challenges, the paper proposes the use of a hybrid algorithm that combines quantum technologies with classical computational methods. Such integration allows the computational power of both types of technologies to be harnessed, leading to faster and more efficient identification of optimal solutions. In this work, we consider the knapsack problem, a classic NP-hard optimization problem that is commonly used to verify the effectiveness of new algorithm construction methods. The algorithm presented is based on the Branch and Bound method and aims to ensure solution optimality in the context of the non-determinism of quantum computers. Within the algorithm, computations are performed alternately on a classical processor and a quantum processor. In addition, the lower and upper bounds of the objective function are computed in constant time using the D-Wave quantum machine.

In the new program period 2021-2027, the strategic goal for the development of European agriculture is defined as „stimulating and sharing knowledge, innovation, digitization and promoting their use to a greater extent“. The increasing number of animals on farms, the requirements for humane treatment and environmental protection, as well as the implementation of production systems with limited use of resources require new solutions that can be found in digital technologies used throughout the livestock system. Precision livestock farming involves the use of digital technologies. It aims to improve production and reproduction, animal welfare and facilitate targeted use of resources to reduce the impact on the environment and human health by precisely controlling processes.The implementation of PLF depends on: socio-demographic factors, size of the farm, production system, specialization of the farm, type of animals, animal husbandry technology, age of the farmer, country and region, etc.

Designing a Production System for Woven ‘Stagen’ Products: a Community Service Practice in a Weaving Community

A robust production system needs to be implemented across all business scales, including small-scale enterprises managed by community groups. This forms the foundation for the development of more competitive businesses. As reported in this paper, a community service program was elaborated to design a production system for a stagen weaving business group located in Moyudan, Sleman, Indonesia. To implement this production system, there are five main stages: situational analysis, production system design, workshop, implementation, and monitoring and evaluation. A pilot project was tested on four weavers with distinct characteristics. The results indicate that each of the four weavers produced different stagen patterns with significant revenue gains for weaver 1 and weaver 2 amounting to more than IDR 500.000 (360.24 meters and 237.43 meters, respectively). This program successfully achieved specific targets in line with the scope.

Simulations of Future Trends in Welfare-Centric Egg Production Systems: Impacts on Productivity and Prices.

The implementation of more animal welfare-centric livestock production systems holds considerable potential for achieving sustainable production in Japan. However, such systems generally reduce productivity per unit area, impose financial burdens on farmers that adversely affect their physical and mental health, and require increased consumer awareness. In particular, declines in productivity per unit area substantially affect the farming economy, giving rise to concerns about the sufficient egg production for the population, which consequently exacerbates Japan's food security concerns. In this study, our goal was to predict temporal trends in the Japanese transition to welfare-centric facilities by analyzing desired egg consumption. We formulated five scenarios, ending in 2050, to assess the future impact of changing the proportions of types of egg production on total production, numbers of hens, total farm area, production costs, and retail prices. Multiple issues were identified in our analysis. First, Japanese production uses conventional caging, which provides high efficiency, maximum output, and decreased prices. Our simulations suggest that ensuring optimal production is likely to present challenges as animal welfare is addressed. They also suggest that the poultry industry or the Japanese government will likely need to plan changes in production methods will likely be necessary to prevent egg surpluses and/or shortages. Additional issues were identified, including price increases, numbers of hens, total farm area, and production costs. This study offers valuable insights for policymakers in their decision-making processes to help optimize production methods while considering food security, animal welfare, and farmers' welfare.

Short-term Fluctuations and Fluctuations in the Development Dynamics of Fixed Assets of Industry

Management and Production Engineering Review (MPER) is a peer-refereed, international, multidisciplinary journal covering a broad spectrum of topics in production engineering and management. Production engineering is a currently developing stream of science encompassing planning, design, implementation and management of production systems. Orientation towards human resources factor differentiates production engineering from other technical disciplines. The journal aims to advance the theoretical and applied knowledge of this rapidly evolving field, with a special focus on production management, organisation of production processes, management of production knowledge, computer integrated management of production flow, enterprise effectiveness, maintainability and sustainable manufacturing, productivity and organisation, modelling and simulation, decision making systems, project management, innovation management and technology transfer, quality engineering and safety at work. Management and Production Engineering Review is published under the auspices of the Polish Academy of Sciences Committee on Production Engineering and Polish Association for Production Management. The main purpose of Management and Production Engineering Review is to publish the results of cutting-edge research advancing the concepts, theories and implementation of novel solutions in modern manufacturing. Papers presenting original research results related to production engineering and management education are also welcomed. We welcome original papers written in English. The Journal also publishes technical briefs, discussions of previously published papers, book reviews, and editorials. Letters to the Editor-in-Chief are highly encouraged.

Building and evaluating prospective scenarios for corn-based biorefineries

Global warming and increasing environmental pollution have become global concerns that, coupled with the scarcity of traditional forms of energy, have motivated the implementation of more sustainable production systems, such as biorefineries. This is because biorefineries are capable of integrating technologies and processes in a single facility, generating biofuels, value-added chemicals, and energy. Thus, the aim of the study was to investigate the bioproducts and emergent technologies surrounding the processing of corn into bioethanol and refined oil. A bibliometric analysis he was carried out in order to construct and evaluate prospective scenarios related to corn biorefineries. An analysis of the proposed layouts highlighted flexibility in the production process, given that one raw material could be transformed into various bioproducts. Thus, the results presented provide a bibliographic foundation for future studies on integrating residues-processes-products in corn processing. The reason for this is that the technological routes presented could be considered incremental innovations to develop a biorefinery, which takes place gradually, given that highly integrated biorefineries are highly complex.

Implementation of Digital Twin and Real Production System to Address Actual and Future Challenges in Assembly Technology

Increasing volatility in manufacturing and rising sustainability requirements demand more efficient processes in production, especially in employee qualification and engineering during development and on-site adjustments before and after the start of production. One possible solution is using digital twins for virtual commissioning, which can speed up engineering processes, qualify employees, and save valuable resources. To solve these challenges, it is necessary to identify promising approaches for using the digital twin and virtual commissioning. Furthermore, creating an environment where these approaches can be optimally explored is essential. This paper presents promising research approaches and demonstrates the development of an assembly process and a production system with a digital twin designed to explore these aspects. The presented system is an interlinked production system for assembling an actual industrial product. It includes different levels of human–robot interaction and automation, which can be implemented virtually in the digital twin.

Ag Lenders Offer Insight on Conditions for Nebraska Livestock Producers

In 2017, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources (IANR) and Nebraska Extension made a commitment to implement a multidisciplinary Beef Systems Initiative (BSI) to develop and support implementation of beef production systems in Nebraska. In addition to the BSI, a parallel project funded by the Foundation for Food and Agriculture Research (FFAR) implemented a study of the best practices for incorporating beef cattle onto cropping systems while improving ecosystem services to ensure sustainability. As a component of the FFAR project, an agricultural lenders panel was formed to provide input and feedback to UNL researchers on the financial considerations for producers implementing new or expanding existing operations. The lenders panel met for the first time in 2019.

Rapid implementation of an emergency on-site CKRT dialysate production system during the COVID-19 pandemic

BackgroundOn December 29, 2021, during the delta wave of the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, the stock of premanufactured solutions used for continuous kidney replacement therapy (CKRT) at the University of New Mexico Hospital (UNMH) was nearly exhausted with no resupply anticipated due to supply chain disruptions. Within hours, a backup plan, devised and tested 18 months prior, to locally produce CKRT dialysate was implemented. This report describes the emergency implementation and outcomes of this on-site CKRT dialysate production system.MethodsThis is a single-center retrospective case series and narrative report describing and reporting the outcomes of the implementation of an on-site CKRT dialysate production system. All adults treated with locally produced CKRT dialysate in December 2021 and January 2022 at UNMH were included. CKRT dialysate was produced locally using intermittent hemodialysis machines, hemodialysis concentrate, sterile parenteral nutrition bags, and connectors made of 3-D printed biocompatible rigid material. Outcomes analyzed included dialysate testing for composition and microbiologic contamination, CKRT prescription components, patient mortality, sequential organ failure assessment (SOFA) scores, and catheter-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSIs).ResultsOver 13 days, 22 patients were treated with 3,645 L of locally produced dialysate with a mean dose of 20.0 mL/kg/h. Fluid sample testing at 48 h revealed appropriate electrolyte composition and endotoxin levels and bacterial colony counts at or below the lower limit of detection. No CLABSIs occurred within 7 days of exposure to locally produced dialysate. In-hospital mortality was 81.8% and 28-day mortality was 68.2%, though illness severity was high, with a mean SOFA score of 14.5.ConclusionsThough producing CKRT fluid with IHD machines is not novel, this report represents the first description of the rapid and successful implementation of a backup plan for local CKRT dialysate production at a large academic medical center in the U.S. during the COVID-19 pandemic. Though conclusions are limited by the retrospective design and limited sample size of our analysis, our experience could serve as a guide for other centers navigating similar severe supply constraints in the future.

Attributional and consequential life cycle perspectives of second-generation polylactic acid: The benefits of integrating a recycling strategy

The climate crisis calls for a shift from petrochemicals to bio-based products to reduce environmental consequences. Polylactic acid (PLA) is one of the most widely used biopolymers, due to its mechanical properties and renewable origin, to produce bio-based compostable plastic for food packaging. The objective of this study is to determine the environmental feasibility of a second-generation PLA production based on wheat straw; and the role of a chemical recycling plant on the environmental performance of a bioproduct at an early design stage. A holistic assessment was performed through the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology considering both attributional and consequential perspectives, through a cradle-to-grave approach. The attributional LCA results show that lactic acid production was the main contributor due to the wheat straw pre-treatment and downstream separation and purification (DSP) processes. The integration of a recycling plant leads to a significant reduction of burdens, ranging from 1.38 to 0.44 kg CO2eq in the Global Warming category. Furthermore, consequential LCA results shows that the increased demand for substitute products for activities such as feeding, fertilisation and energy generation and the indirect emissions from land use change related to the conversion of land for the cultivation of raw materials are relevant factors in the environmental effects associated with the possible implementation of straw-based bioPLA production system.

A SECURITY MECHANISM FOR INCREASING THE LEVEL OF COMPETITIVENESS OF ENTERPRISES UNDER THE CONDITIONS OF MARITAL STATE

The article reveals the essence of the security mechanism, which ensures an increase in the level of competitiveness of enterprises under martial law. It was established that the security mechanism can be implemented both by the state and by the enterprise. Security in information technology and cyber security is especially important because, in today’s world, information is a valuable asset that needs to be protected from unauthorized access, use, and damage. This aspect can manifest both at the level of the state and at the level of the enterprise. The purpose of this article is to study the security mechanisms that contribute to increasing the level of competitiveness of enterprises under martial law. In the process of writing the article, various general scientific and special research methods were applied. In particular, deductive and inductive methods were used to study directions for the implementation of the security mechanism. The graphic method was used to visualize the research results. The abstract-logical method was used for theoretical generalizations and the formation of conclusions. The main purpose of the security mechanism is to prevent unwanted events and ensure the integrity, confidentiality, and availability of data, systems, and resources. The security mechanism helps to eliminate risks related to intrusion, hacking, fraud, data loss, and other threats. It can fully prevent unauthorized use, access, or modification of data or resources and ensure that only authorized users are allowed to maintain access to confidential information or operate the system. The main stages of developing a security mechanism are threat analysis, planning, development, testing, implementation, maintenance, and updating. The security mechanism for increasing the level of competitiveness of enterprises focuses on the development and implementation of measures to protect employees, ensuring protection against cyber-attacks and cyber-espionage; the implementation of flexible production systems; the development of mechanisms for rapid response to changes in external and internal conditions; the establishment of relations and cooperation with government bodies and regulators; and maintaining trust and cooperation with the public. It is substantiated that the development of a security mechanism is a complex and long-term process based on the acquired experience and specialized knowledge in the field of security for its successful implementation.

Application of AGV in the Production System at the PT. Adhikara Wiyasa Gani

This study aims to analyze the effectiveness and efficiency of applying AGV in the production system at the PT. Adhikara Wiyasa Gani. AGV is implemented as a means of transporting materials from the warehouse to the production line, as well as returning finished goods to the warehouse. The research method used was data collection through field observations, interviews with workers, and analysis of production data before and after using AGV.
 The research results show that the use of AGV can increase the effectiveness and efficiency of the production system. The time required for material delivery from the warehouse to the production line and the return of finished goods to the warehouse can be minimized, thereby speeding up production time. In addition, AGV can also reduce production costs by reducing labor costs and minimizing the risk of human error in shipping goods.
 In conclusion, the application of AGV can have a positive impact on the production system at the PT. Adhikara Wiyasa Gani. However, further research can be conducted to deepen the effectiveness and efficiency of AGV implementation in production systems in general.

Water Energy Nexus and Energy Transition—A Review

The new perspectives of the water–energy nexus, water-for-energy and energy-for-water, emphasize the current and future need to find ways to produce as much energy with as low an amount of water as possible and to obtain as much water with as little energy as possible. In order to promote and implement the concept of sustainable development, the understanding of the dynamic and complex relationship between water and energy is crucial, especially in the context of energy transition. This paper presents a comprehensive analysis of the recent approaches regarding water and energy and the interlink during implementation, operation and servicing of various water and energy production systems. This endeavor is placed in the context of current energy transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources. A qualitative and quantitative analysis is performed with various literature solutions from water-for-energy and energy-for-water perspectives for a broader view of the impact of implementing novel technologies in terms of resource use. Technological and managerial innovations are discussed and placed in a transdisciplinary context with a focus on establishing key approaches for achieving sustainable development goals.

Enablers of artificial intelligence adoption and implementation in production systems

Artificial intelligence (AI) is considered a mechanism that can improve supply chain resilience. Organisations around the world are investing in implementing AI systems to improve their supply chain and become more resilient to pandemics and disruption. At the same time, practitioners are not fully aware of the factors that impact the implementation of these systems. Alongside this, the extant literature lacks a comprehensive study that evaluates the enablers impacting the implementation of AI in production systems. This research fills this gap by identifying, defining, and evaluating the critical enablers influencing the adoption and implementation of AI in production systems. We extracted twelve enablers, created a conceptual model, and categorised the enablers based on the Technology, Organization, and Environment (TOE) framework. After categorisation, we used the analytical hierarchy process to assess the importance of the enablers presented in the model using data collected from eight experts. The results revealed that technology, as a category, is more crucial than organisation or environment. The findings also indicated that project management is the most critical of all twelve enablers. We discuss the implications of the analysis for practitioners and researchers. We also offer twelve propositions that researchers can empirically assess in future studies.

Characteristic analysis of elderly workers in human-centric production systems using real observations and simulated constraints

Owing to the growing number of elderly workers in developed countries, the age-friendly design of production systems is crucial for the success of human-centric manufacturing. To obtain knowledge for designing age-friendly production systems, this study conducted the first characteristic analysis of elderly workers, focusing on the set parts supply process. By combining motion analysis with the subjective mental workload survey, this study clarified the differences in how tasks are performed by elderly and young workers and how such differences affect the mental workload of elderly workers. The findings enable evidence-based design and implementation of age-friendly production systems.

Antibiotic removal does not affect cecal microbiota balance and productive parameters in LP robust rabbit line.

Antimicrobial resistance is an important threat to public health worldwide, being one of the main death causes in 2050. Moreover, global health is currently underpinned by the "One Health" concept, whereby livestock is strictly related to human and environmental health. However, in the case of the meat rabbit industry, antibiotic additives are still added to prevent gastrointestinal diseases. Current food and consumer awareness require the implementation of sustainable production systems, where robustness and resilience are increasingly important. Hence, the aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of antibiotic feed supplementation on microbiota, and productive performance during the rabbit growing period in a robust genetic line. For this purpose, a total of 432 weaned rabbits were randomly housed, cecum samples were taken on the weaning day and at the end of the growing period (28 and 61 days of age, respectively), and 16S rRNA sequencing analysis was performed. Results showed a higher microbiota complexity at the end of growing in both experimental groups. Firmicutes represented the dominant phylum of the cecal community, followed by Bacteroidota in both groups. Moreover, Victivallis and Escherichia-Shigella genera were only identified in the experimental group without antibiotic supplementation at the end of the growing period. In conclusion, antibiotic feed supplementation had no effect on microbiota composition and productive performance in the robust genetic line reared. These results evidence the importance of the development of rabbit robust genetic lines as an alternative tool to antibiotic administration in epizootic enteropathy control.

Implementation of stubble in agricultural production: A review

Objective: To elucidate the benefits that agricultural residues or stubble have in agricultural activities, through a bibliographic and objective review that could help to make the actors of agricultural sector aware of the benefits and their correct implementation in production systems. Design/methodology/approach: A detailed review of scientific articles from the main academic databases and repositories was performed. We took into account aspects such as the use of stubble as plant cover; effects and changes in physical and chemical structure of soil; crop yield and use for livestock feeding. Results: The use of stubble has beneficial effects on agricultural activities. In agriculture, they have positive effects for the proliferation of beneficial organisms and assimilation of nutrients, which are easily absorbed by plants. Consequently, crop yield is maximized both in quantity and quality terms. In livestock sector, the stubble implement provides nutrients such as proteins, ashes and vitamins, which together with conventional diets, reduce production costs and improve meat and milk production. Limitations on study/implications: The repertoire of scientific articles related to stubble is very broad, making it difficult to assimilate the information. In Mexico, particularly, more research is needed to inform farmers of the possible uses of stubble. Findings/conclusions: The use of stubble in agricultural activities generates benefits at ecological and economic levels, which ensure the sustainability and resilience of agroecosystems. Nutritional content of stubble is a function of the species and/or varieties of agricultural species. The lack of knowledge in the management of stubble leads to these being incinerated, releasing particles and toxic and polluting substances for the environment, further favoring the conditions for greenhouse effect.

Pathways towards carbon neutrality: A participatory analysis of the Gothenburg’s energy plan

Among International Energy Agency members, Sweden is one of the upfront countries in implementing energy policies to achieve zero net emissions. Despite having the lowest share of fossil sources in its primary energy supply, becoming carbon neutral by 2045 is a challenging target. To meet the national goal, cities’ roadmaps and strategic plans have a leading role in facilitating the implementation of energy efficiency measures and renewable production systems. However, succeeding in city energy transitions requires envisioning and understanding of risk and vulnerability levels of the new socio-technical energy system. This study presents a review of the City of Gothenburg’s Energy Plan 2022-2030 and discusses potential challenges for its implementation. Based on a document study, stakeholder workshop, and interviews the research identifies four key aspects: i) the coordination between energy and urban planning, ii) the future stability of district heating and cooling, iii) the balance in electrification of the buildings and transport, iv) communication and tools in decision-making processes. Finally, the study suggests new measures that should be allocated in the plan to guarantee the development of instruments and analysis for addressing the identified challenges.

Atypical ageing defect in Pinot Blanc wines: a comparison between organic and conventional production management systems.

Atypical ageing (ATA) is an aroma defect that occurs in white wines and entails a loss of varietal aromas as well as scents of wet mop, shoe polish and dish rag. 2-Aminoacetophenone (2AAP) - a degradation product of indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) - has been described as the main odour-active compound and chemical marker responsible for this off-flavour. A stress reaction in the vineyard triggered by climatic, pedological and viticultural factors can ultimately cause ATA development in wines and remarkably affect wine quality. The aim of this research was to investigate the influence of three grapevine management systems on the occurrence of ATA. The experiments were carried out on Pinot Blanc grape samples from vines cultivated using one conventional and two organic approaches. The management systems mainly differed for the fertilisation regime and the weed control. The amino acid profiles as well as 2AAP and its precursors were quantified in musts and wines using ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography coupled to a high-resolution mass spectrometer. The results showed the existence of a strong vintage effect, while no influence of the use of different agronomic systems was observed. The study revealed that an efficient implementation of different grapevine production systems did not affect ATA development in Pinot Blanc wines. This finding is of great relevance for winegrowers and winemakers as it demonstrates that a well-planned organic management system correctly adjusted to the climatic conditions does not pose a threat towards the development of ATA-related compounds in wine. © 2022 The Authors. Interplay between lean management and circular production system: implications for zero-waste performance, green value competitiveness, and social reputation

PurposeThis study explores the interplay between lean management and circular production systems and their implications on zero-waste performance, green value competitiveness and social reputation.Design/methodology/approachQuestionnaire-based survey methodology is used to obtain empirical data from Ghanaian manufacturing SMEs. A multivariate statistical technique, specifically partial least square structural equation modelling is chosen to test the hypothesized relationships.FindingsThe empirical results confirm that lean management is a vital element in moving SMEs towards the implementation of circular production systems. The results also confirm that lean management and circular production systems combine effectively to bring about significant improvement in zero-waste performance, reinforce green value competitiveness and boost social reputation. The results further confirm the mediation role of circular production system between lean management, zero-waste performance, green value competitiveness and social reputation.Originality/valueAnchored on the tenets of the natural resource-based view theory, resource orchestration theory and stakeholder theory, this study proposes an integrated research model that builds new insights into the relationship between lean management, circular production system, zero-waste performance, green value competitiveness and social reputation. The proposed model directs the actions of SME managers in emerging countries to comprehensively evaluate their production processes to equalize the possible compatibility of lean management and circular production systems to meet their zero-waste performance targets, gain green value competitiveness and stimulate social reputation.
