The Role of Local Government and Environmental Management in Managing Tidal Floods in Bintan Regency

Indonesia is highly vulnerable to natural disasters, with tidal floods being a significant concern in Bintan Regency due to its exposure to sea tides and extreme weather events. The local government's role and environmental management strategies are crucial in mitigating these risks. This research seeks to evaluate these aspects by focusing on the measures implemented by Bintan Regency to manage tidal floods. The study employs a qualitative approach, relying on literature reviews to collect data from various sources such as scientific journals, books, research reports, and other relevant documents. This method provides a comprehensive understanding of the current practices and effectiveness of flood management and environmental management strategies in Bintan Regency. The research findings indicate that the Bintan Regency local government has undertaken significant initiatives to reduce tidal flood risks. These initiatives include spatial planning that integrates disaster risk considerations, the development of flood management infrastructure, and community education programs aimed at increasing preparedness. The effective implementation of environmental management practices, including the use of advanced technology for monitoring and evaluation, has been instrumental in these efforts. The local government’s approach reflects a proactive stance in addressing the challenges posed by tidal floods, emphasizing both preventative measures and responsive strategies. The study concludes that a holistic and sustainable approach is essential for effective tidal flood management. The integration of comprehensive spatial planning, infrastructure development, community engagement, and modern technology forms a robust framework for disaster mitigation.

Evaluation of environmental management and its correlation with eco-efficiency in public Institutions in Peru

The study aims to determine the relationship between environmental management and eco-efficiency of workers in public institutions in Peru. For this, a quantitative approach with a correlational design was proposed, in which 320 employees from various public institutions participated. Data collection was carried out through two Likert-type questionnaires, and the Spearman's Rho coefficient was used to obtain the correlation levels. The results showed a positive correlation (0.768) between environmental management and eco-efficiency, indicating that better implementation of environmental management practices is associated with more efficient use of resources within institutions. In conclusion, the importance of promoting policies and training on environmental management in the public sector is highlighted, as this not only contributes to environmental preservation but also has a direct impact on the operational efficiency of entities.

Evaluation of the Perception and Adoption of Environmental Management System in Small and Medium Enterprises in the Manufacturing Sector in Lagos and Ogun States, Southwestern Nigeria

The objective of this paper was to evaluate the perception and adoption of environmental management system in small and medium enterprises in the manufacturing sector in Lagos and Ogun States, Southwestern Nigeria using appropriate standard techniques. The paper posits that environmental management literacy and advocacy should be carried out in SMEs. Environmental management practices involve engaging both industries and product end-users in sustainable practices. The paper concludes that the implementation of environmental management practices and culture by SMEs will abate environmental pollution and its concomitant health risks to humans, the environment, flora, and fauna. Mandatory and voluntary environmental measures 3 are suggested as a means of engendering eco-friendly innovation for sustainable development, triggering employment, job security, and gross domestic product.

Navigating Environmental Stewardship: A Review of Construction Industry Practices in Developed Countries

Due to rapid urbanization, the construction industry has expanded significantly to meet human needs. Controlling environmental impacts in the construction sector has become a major global issue. The implementation of environmental management practices in the construction sector has contributed to protecting the environment through various management methods. This review aims to provide an overview of environmental management practices in the construction industry in developed countries, including a review of the types of environmental management practices and government policies for adopting these practices. The current status of these practices in developed countries is discussed, as well as the barriers and prospects for environmental management practices. Challenges include behavior adoption, lack of material standardization, monitoring difficulties, and inefficient formation of temporary organizations. Cooperation among construction parties presents coordination issues, exacerbating uneven cost distribution and neglect of environmental impacts. Adoption of ISO 14001 Environmental Management Systems faces hurdles such as lack of management involvement, third-party interference, and lack of guidelines. Initiatives like Green Star struggle due to poor enforcement and organizational issues, hindering sustainable development. To accomplish the goal of sustainable development, additional environmental factors have been taken into account and discussed.

Environmental Management Practices (EMP) Implementation in Small and Medium-Size Businesses

Purpose: Small and medium-sized businesses must understand the environmental consequences of their operations and seek advice on green issues. The goal of the study is to look into the factors that influence their establishment's implementation of environmental management practices. Theoretical framework: A modified version of the Technology-Organizational-Environmental Framework (TOE) (Tornatzky & Fleischer, 1990) and the Model of External Influences on Environmental Awareness and Practices (MEAP) (Gadenne et al., 2009) have been developed for researching the adoption of environment management practices. Design/methodology/approach: The study is to determine the factors adopting environmental management practices in small and medium-sized businesses. Variables introduced are from systematic literature reviews of related articles and journals. The papers were analysed from descriptive, bibliographic, methodologic, results, and citation characteristics. Findings: According to the findings, small and medium-sized businesses could perhaps participate in environmental programs such as corporate governance, environmental legislation, different industries, business size, organization traits, talent management, internationalization, organizational structure, corporate execution activity, environmental and sustainable aspects, and role in the logistics system, corporate strategy demeanour, and geographical region. Research, Practical & Social implications: For small and medium-sized enterprises, implementing environmental management practices can be seen as a key strategy for addressing their environmental issues. It's crucial to understand the motivations behind these policies, though. Originality/value: This article is an academic contribution that allows an understanding of research developed on small and medium size businesses on adopting environmental management practices, considering data from two reference research databases.

Evaluating the Impact of Environmental Management Policies on Communities in the Leather Tannery Industrial Area of Garut Regency

Industrialization fundamentally aims to enhance the quality of life and the welfare of people. However, insufficient management of residual production waste generates adverse effects on both the environment and the inhabitants residing near industrial zones. In response, the government has established regulatory measures for environmental protection and management through Government Regulation Number 22 of 2021. This regulation seeks to strike a balance between the community’s economic interests and environmental sustainability, safeguarding the rights of citizens. The core objectives of this research are to assess the state of environmental policies within the Sukaregang leather tanning industrial area, to scrutinize the implementation of environmental management practices, and to evaluate the impact of Government Regulation Number 22 of 2021. Employing a qualitative case study approach, the research centers on the Sukaregang leather tanning industrial area, a pivotal hub for the leather industry and a symbol of the Garut Regency. The data collection involves interviews with key stakeholders, including the Environmental Service, the leather tanning industry, and the affected community. The research concludes that while policies based on Government Regulation Number 22 of 2021 are in place, complementary local regulations are absent. The current implementation of environmental management continues to engender negative externalities in sectors such as agriculture, health, and environmental pollution. To address the shortfalls in achieving policy goals and objectives, it becomes imperative to establish local regulations that facilitate cost-sharing in the waste treatment process, utilizing Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) technology. Such measures are essential for upholding environmental quality for the residents of industrial areas.

Influence of Management Commitment in the Implementation of Hotel Environmental Management Practices and its Effect on Business Sustainability among Hotels in Tanzania

This study aimed to assess the influence of management commitment in the implementation of hotel environmental management practices and its effect on business sustainability among hotels in Tanzania. Studies have shown that management commitment plays a significant role in the implementation of hotel Environmental Management Practices (EMPs). Based on that argument, two hypotheses were formulated as follows; Firstly, Management commitment influences the implementation of environmental management practices. Secondly, Implementation of environment practices have effects on hotel business sustainability. The study was conducted in two cities namely: Arusha and Dar es Salaam whereby a structured questionnaire with Likert scale range from 1 to 5 was used to collect information from the sample of 400 managers and supervisors of hotels. SPSS software was used for data entry and AMOS software version 23 was used to analyze multivariate analysis and Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) was used to test the hypotheses. The findings indicated that both hypotheses were accepted that is, Management commitment has a positive influence on the implementation of the EMPs with highly significant at p<0.000. Also, the implementation of EMPs has a positive effect on hotel business sustainability strongly significant p<0.000. Therefore, the implications to industry managers and expertise are: first, hotel managers’ commitment plays a pivotal role in the EMPs implementation. Second, the implementation of EMPs in hotels serves as a vehicle in achieving hotel business sustainability. This contributes to a body of knowledge by showing that an environmental factor is a major external component that affects business sustainability in organizations like hotels. Moreover, the study has enlightened that, a hotel manager stands a strategic role in managing the organization based morals and values that address the interest of a bigger segment of its stakeholders. The study recommends future research on further study of water conservation especially on reducing water for showering and bathtubs. It was concluded that commitment of hotel managers in the implementation of EMP plays a pivot role in the sustainability of hotel business in Tanzania.

Green construction supply chain management: Integrating governmental intervention and public–private partnerships through ecological modernisation

There has been global recognition of the urgent need to tackle adverse environmental impacts of the construction industry. Construction companies are called upon to switch to ecological modernisation by scaling up the implementation of environmental management practices while maintaining a level of economic development. Under ecological modernisation theory, green supply chain management has emerged as an environmental technological innovation, helping organisations to switch to ecological modernisation. Past research revealed a need to identify mechanisms aimed at resolving conflicts among construction supply chain actors, speeding collaboration among them, and managing the transition to green supply chain management. This research aims to examine whether governmental intervention can act as an effective mechanism with which to foster public–private partnerships among construction companies, thereby promoting ecological modernisation through the adoption of green supply chain management. Data were collected from survey responses from 229 Chinese construction companies and analysed using partial least squares structural equation modelling. The results show that coordination between governmental support and public–private partnerships is necessary to aid construction companies in implementing green supply chain innovation and complying with environmental regulations and, thus, achieving multiple performance benefits, including environmental and short-term economic performance improvements. However, it is unlikely that green supply chain management alone could drive the long-term goal of ecological modernisation theory unless more proactive actions are taken by all stakeholders. This study demonstrates how ecological modernisation theory can be applied to advance green supply chain management studies. Enforcing and incentivising aspects of governmental intervention, i.e. environmental regulations and governmental support, have been proven to be effective in developing a regulatory framework for, and partnerships among, stakeholders. This results in the sharing of resources, knowledge and practices to contemplate a new paradigm of supply chain integration and coordination for the construction sector and promote active adaptation to green supply chain management.

Explaining the business case for environmental management practices in SMEs: The role of organisational capabilities for environmental communication

The preservation of the natural environment demands engagement of small and medium-sized enterprises in terms of the rethinking of their operations and aligns their efforts with the implementation of environmental management practices by the development of organisational capabilities for environmental communication. By performing Partial Least Squares-Structural Equation Modelling using data from 112 Danish small firms in the printing and graphic industry, the study suggests that environmental management practices can boost competitive advantage in terms of lower costs and improved reputation following from the development of organisational capabilities for environmental communication. Thus, the study provides some insight in regard to the strategic significance of environmental management practices and the related communication mechanisms among small firms.

Environmental management practices for the circular economy development in Russia and their impact on the financial performance of companies

The article explores the impact of environmental management practices, which support regenerative thinking in Russian companies, on financial performance determined by the ability of businesses to generate an income stream. The study relies on the theory of circular economy and environmental management and applies the methods of linear and logistic regression analysis. The empirical basis includes the results of a survey of Russian companies conducted by the World Bank in 2019. The research findings show that the depth of implementation of environmental management practices depends on the presence of a formalized strategy and top management experience, as well as on the introduction of process innovation. We find that the practices under consideration such as the development of a vision and an environmental management strategy, targeting and monitoring, systematic management of energy resources and green innovation significantly contribute to the additional revenue stream of Russian companies. In contrast to previous works, the current study reveals that the system-based implementation of certain environmental management practices is a precursor to the introduction of a circular economy, which creates a holistic view of resource flows and is designed to enhance the performance of both manufacturing and service companies. In the paper, we also analyze the two-way interaction of the management practices and financial performance. Managers and investors can use the research results to examine the main drivers of revenue growth related to environmental management initiatives characteristic of the circular economy.

The antecedents and outcomes of environmental management based on the resource-based view

PurposeDrawing on the resource-based view (RBV), the aim of this research is to identify the main antecedents and outcomes of environmental management in the literature.Design/methodology/approachA systematic literature review was conducted to analyze and synthesize the articles published in peer-reviewed journals indexed in the Scopus database until 2018 based on inclusion and exclusion criteria.FindingsThe systematic literature review identified the main antecedents and outcomes of environmental management. The main antecedents are resources and capabilities, institutional and stakeholders' pressures, firm size, and role of managers. The main outcomes are competitive advantage, firm performance particularly financial performance, economic performance, and environmental performance, and resources and capabilities. Furthermore, this paper offers guidance for further research on the subject.Practical implicationsThis research may assist professionals by understanding the factors that foster the implementation of environmental management practices and their benefits. In addition, the findings are useful for policymakers in taking effective institutional measures in order to offer a conducive context for environmental sustainability.Originality/valueThis research illustrates the state of the art of the main antecedents and outcomes of environmental management in the literature based on the RBV and then determines research gaps in order to offer new and interesting research perspectives.

GREEN SUPPLY CHAIN MANAGEMENT E AS PRÁTICAS ADOTADAS PELA INDÚSTRIA QUÍMICA

Cenários onde as empresas procuram vantagens competitivas constantes e com um mercado de consumo altamente mutável, geram desafios para os gestores das empresas. Diante das mudanças no gerenciamento da cadeia de suprimentos, além de se tornar relevante, exige que cada componente realize suas melhores práticas, incluindo a implementação de práticas ambientais de gestão. Este estudo possui o objetivo de identificar as práticas de Green Supply Chain Management (GSCM) nas empresas do setor químico e como elas atuam em suas operações. Por meio de um estudo qualitativo e orientado para entrevistas em quatro empresas de referência no setor químico, revelam-se as principais contribuições; as empresas aplicam práticas de GSCM em suas operações, como por exemplo, logística reversa, controle de consumo de água e energia elétrica, possuem certificações ISO e buscam trabalhar com fornecedores certificados. Ademais, nota-se um setor regulamentado e que possui preocupações com a imagem e reputação da empresa. Farming in a changing environment: Increasing biodiversity on farm for the supply of multiple ecosystem services

Among natural resources, soils continue to be poorly represented in ecosystem services frameworks and decision-making processes. Similarly, the supply of multiple ecosystem services from agro-ecosystems and trade-offs between services remains under-researched. As a consequence, it is unclear how and to what extent agriculture can deliver on environmental sustainability, whilst maintaining current levels of profitability. One of the main barriers to implementation of environmental management practices is the perception by the farming industry that environmental gains come at a cost and impact negatively on profitability. Therefore, we need to demonstrate that inclusion of all the natural resources on farm in farm system design and management offers flexibility for the farm system and insures improved sustainability and greater resilience.In this study, an ecosystem approach was paired with a new generation farm system optimisation model and the inclusion of natural resources beyond land, especially biodiversity, to explore farm system design, and report on ecosystem services beyond food and fibre from different parts of the farm. The approach was tested on a sheep and beef farm in Waikato, New Zealand to explore the added benefits of replanting fragile parts of the farm landscape for soil and biodiversity enhancement on reduced emissions to air and water, and trade-offs between different services and farm profitability. The approach showed that it is possible to define and include ecological boundaries within which resources can be managed to deliver multiple benefits ranging from increased per hectare profitability to decreased environmental footprints. This is a feature analytical farm system frameworks will require in the future. The research also highlighted the importance of developing our understanding of the relationship between the condition and function of indigenous biodiversity fragments and adjacent pastoral ecosystems and their contribution to economic, environmental, cultural and social outcomes on and beyond the farm.

Implementation of environmental management practices in the Ghanaian mining and manufacturing supply chains

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to understand the driving forces of environmental management practices in mining and manufacturing firms using data from Ghana.Design/methodology/approachPrior exploratory factor analysis and structural equation modeling, based on questionnaire survey data, were used to study the driving forces of environmental management practices in the extractive and manufacturing firms using institutional theory.FindingsEnvironmental management practices by organizations in Ghana are driven by regulatory and the mimetic pressures. Normative pressure has no significant effect on environmental management practices. The authors found no difference between the extractive and the manufacturing sectors as far as the results are concerned.Research limitations/implicationsThe results indicate the importance of regulatory bodies in developing good environmental policies that are implemented and monitored in order to achieve improved environmental performance. Effective implementation of environmental policies is likely to motivate other firms to mimic the actions of implementing organizations. One limitation of this work is the use of data from Ghana. It is important for other researchers to assess these relationships using data from a wider geographical area.Practical implicationsThe results indicate that organizations implement environmental management practices as a result of coercive and mimetic pressures. In practice, it is therefore important for the regulatory bodies, such as the Environmental Protection Agency Ghana, to be very innovative in developing good environmental regulations that are monitored to ensure implementation by all polluting sources. This is because the results indicate that the monitoring of regulations by regulatory bodies seems to be connected to the implementation of these regulations. Such implementation is also expected to be benchmarked by other firms, thereby influencing the “greening” agenda in Africa.Originality/valueThe study illustrates and provides some insights, and builds on the literature in the area of green supply chain strategies for a developing country’s environment. This is one of the few studies that investigate the driving forces of environmental management implementation using the institutional theory based on data from the African business environment.

BARRIERS TO ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT IN HOTELS IN KWAZULU- NATAL, SOUTH AFRICA

In the last two decades an increasing number of studies have focused on the impacts of tourism development on the environment aimed at the depletion of natural resources, the generation of waste and pollution and general environmental degradation. Consequently, the huge growth in the hotel industry has considerably affected the environment at a global level as the sector consumes large amounts of energy, water and non-durable products. Hotels are therefore now urged to engage in responsible and sustainable environmental management practices. Often hotel managers are keen to engage in responsible environmental practices but are unable to do so due to certain impediments. This article examines the barriers or challenges that are faced in adopting more sustainable and responsible environmental management practices in hotels in KwaZulu- Natal, South Africa. n total, 142 hotels (including hotel chains as one entity) were identified in KwaZulu-Natal and a census approach was adopted, in that all 142 were approached to participate in the study. Sixty hotels responded. Data was collected through a web-based, online survey questionnaire. The findings reveal that hoteliers are faced with a number of barriers in the implementation of environmental management practices. These barriers include lack of knowledge and expertise, lack of resources to implement certain environmental management practices, lack of government assistance, lack of legislation and regulation and high costs. Furthermore, a noteworthy finding is that a number of hotels in KwaZulu-Natal are unaware of the savings potential associated with environmental programmes, that is, the direct benefits to their establishments.

Proactive environmental management in hotels: What difference does it make?

Tourism is one of the most important economic sectors in the world and, due to its strong relationship with natural resources, it has attracted growing interest from the environmental scientific community concerning the evaluation, management and control of its environmental impacts. Recently, Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) has been used to measure and assess the environmental impacts of tourism-related activities. The objective of this article is thus to perform a comparative analysis of two archetypal tourist accommodations with a different degree of implementation of environmental management practices by using the LCA meth-odology. This methodology allows to thoroughly assess the difference in the environmental performance of two hotels with different environmental management strategies and, particu-larly, how much this performance can be improved following some of the requirements and best practices for the environmental sustainability of a hotel, as described by the Ecolabel regulation criteria for tourist accommodations. The study does not refer to real tourist ac-commodations, however a realistic hotel structure has been modelled using data from the literature and from the available legislative documentation. The key-results of the study is that the adoption of environmental best practices undoubtedly leads to a reduced impact for tourist accommodations, especially when considering hotels with service structures as common parts (such as swimming pools). As a consequence, the recommendation emerges that public policies shall support the implementation of such practices.

Stakeholder Influence on the Implementation of Environmental Management Practices in the Hotel Industry

AbstractBased on the stakeholder theory, this research aims to analyze the relationship between hoteliers' perceptions of stakeholders' interests and the implementation of environmental management practices in Oaxaca, Mexico, incorporating the effect of three hotel characteristics: size, age and economic capacity. Empirical evidence, obtained from hotel owners and/or managers, reveals a direct and positive relationship between the hoteliers' perceptions of stakeholders' interests and the implementation of environmental management practices, with hotel age and size having a moderating effect. Economic capacity, as an independent variable, is also an important factor in the implementation of environmental management practices. Copyright © 2015 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Energy and utility management maturity model for sustainable manufacturing process

The manufacturing industry, one of the top consumers of natural resources, produces extensive carbon emissions that create the need for a sustainable manufacturing process, a topic of significant research interest. In the recent decades, the advancement of environmental technology and introduction of comprehensive environmental management systems have highlighted the intangible benefits of environmental management practices and their potential to drive organizational competitiveness. Accumulating evidence on the potential benefits of environmental protectionism has given rise to a series of environmental management practices and systems, such as energy informatics, environmental management standardization frameworks, and green supplier management and collaboration. However, existing literature lacks a clear conceptualization and a coherent theoretical framework of environmental management. In addition, no systematic framework exists for the design and implementation of environmental management practices that guide organizations in deciding on the practices or systems that they should implement given their organizational situations. Thus, this study aims to develop an energy and utility maturity framework for systematic measurement and management of natural resource consumption. Specifically, the proposed framework, energy and utility management maturity model (EUMMM), was designed based on the capability maturity model integration (CMMI). EUMMM has two major functions. First, it provides an assessment framework for analyzing the maturity level of energy and utility management in organizations. Second, it provides a progressive framework to guide organizational advancement in energy and utility management. A collaborative pilot study was conducted to validate the effectiveness, practicability, and convenience of the EUMMM. The results indicated that EUMMM successfully led the participating companies to move along the environmental management maturity path. Theoretically, this study extends the application of CMMI to the context of natural resource management and develops a progressive framework for energy and utility management maturation. Practically, this study provides a robust guideline for practitioners in analyzing and advancing energy and utility maturity levels to achieve a sustainable manufacturing process.

An institutional theoretic investigation on the links between internationalization of Chinese manufacturers and their environmental supply chain management

Increased market internationalization with more and stricter environmental regulations in different countries has caused manufacturers to extend their environmental management practices to cover their supply chain partners. Thus, environmental supply chain management (ESCM) has become an important competitive and environmental strategy for manufacturers to pursue. China, as a global manufacturer, is also facing this balance of economic development with environmental protection. The literature remains unclear on whether internationalization is beneficial or costly when it comes to environmental management practices such as ESCM within China. Further insight into this issue will be useful for organizations in developing and emergent economies to more effectively prepare for internationalizing their operations and markets. Using internationalization drivers that propel the implementation of environmental management practices in the Chinese manufacturing industry, we applied cluster analysis to group a sample of 377 Chinese manufacturers surveyed in 2007 into three clusters: mature internationalization, emergent internationalization, and domestic-focused. Institutional theory within an internationalization context sets the theoretical foundation for evidence that the international environmentally oriented institutional drivers encountered are positively associated with the adoption of ESCM practices by Chinese manufacturers. We also find significant differences in the environmental, economic and operational performance outcomes across the three manufacturer clusters. We conclude that manufacturing organizations experiencing internationalization with a greater extent of adopting ESCM practices tend to perform better.
