Facilitators and barriers to the implementation of the picture exchange communication system (PECS): a systematic review

Background and aimsAlthough there are several published systematic reviews and meta-analyses of the effectiveness of the Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) protocol, no previous review has focused on factors affecting its implementation. The present review attempted to identify potential barriers and facilitators in implementing PECS, as well as examining authors’ and stakeholders’ views and experiences in terms of implementation.Methods and proceduresA total of 49 studies were identified through a systematic review search process and were included in the data extraction phase. A Content Analysis of previous researchers’ comments was also carried out.Outcome and resultsDuring the data extraction and synthesis phase, it became evident that important features of PECS interventions are not systematically reported in published literature. Thus, our primary research question remained partially unanswered. A Content Analysis of previous researchers’ comments revealed four potential implementation factors, including Contextual & Environmental Factors, PECS Training/Consultation, Supervision and Implementation Fidelity and Adherence to the Protocol.Conclusions and implicationsThe identification of potential barriers or facilitators affecting the implementation of PECS is not currently possible. The present review’s identified implementation factors were extracted from qualitative analysis of previous researchers’ anecdotal remarks or from the social validity measures. Arrayed electro-optic modulators for novel WDM multiplexing

In this paper, a novel silicon-on-chip integrated 4 × 1 wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) multiplexer has been developed. This is the first time that the multiplexer design incorporates arrayed electro-optical modulators with crosstalk cancellation. The design utilizes two types of electro-optic modulators in each channel. The first modulator, based on 1D-PhCNBC, extracts the desired wavelengths from the WDM spectrum. The second modulator, based on coupled hybrid plasmonics, acts as a switch to eliminate crosstalk of the desired optic wavelength signal at the multiplexer output. By combining the advantages of electro-optical modulators and crosstalk cancellation techniques, we anticipate that our proposed design contributes to the advancement of WDM multiplexing technology and facilitates the implementation of efficient and compact optical communication systems. Additionally, this synergy enables enhanced performance, reduced signal interference, and improved signal quality, leading to more reliable and high-speed data transmission in optical networks. The functionality of the device is theoretically simulated using 3D-FDTD (Finite-Difference Time-Domain) method.

Robustness of vortex wave based communications to operational variables

Orbital angular momentum (OAM) based acoustic communications are a promising method of increasing bandwidth in underwater acoustic communications networks as their unique phase patterns form an orthogonal basis set on which communications protocols may be based. The underwater acoustic environment, however, is highly complex and dynamic. These complexities make developing systems capable of long-range communications challenging. Methods for using BELLHOP’s ray tracing software to simulate the time series of vortex-wave based communications signals are presented. Additionally, this study explores the robustness of the inner product deconvolution method of decoding OAM-based communications against various operating conditions, considering both environmental and platform variations. The effects on channel cross-talk are assessed against sound speed profile uncertainty, position errors, Doppler Effect, and turbulence in the water column. These analyses shed light on the operational implementation of OAM-based communications systems.

Design and Implementation of a Hybrid Optical Camera Communication System for Indoor Applications.

Optical wireless communication is a promising emerging technology that addresses the limitations of radio-frequency-based wireless technologies. This study presents a new hybrid modulation method for optical camera communication (OCC), which integrates two waveforms transmitted from a single transmitter light-emitting diode (LED) and receives data through two rolling shutter camera devices on the receiver side. Then, a smart camera with a high-resolution image sensor captures the high-frequency signal, and a low-resolution image sensor from a smartphone camera captures the low-frequency signal. Based on this hybrid scheme, two data streams are transmitted from a single LED, which reduces the cost of the indoor OCC device compared with transmitting two signals from two different LEDs. In the proposed scheme, rolling-shutter orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing is used for the high-frequency signals, and M-ary frequency-shift keying is used for the low-frequency signals in the time domain. This proposed scheme is compatible with smartphone and USB cameras. By controlling the OCC parameters, the hybrid scheme can be implemented with high performance for a communication distance of 10 m.

Purpose: This paper analyzes the ODA management system, including the internal communication system, partnership structure, and policy decision-making and implementation process, of Lao PDR, Indonesia and Vietnam, which are Korea’s key partner countries in Asia. Based on the analysis, the paper aims to draw policy recommendations for donors to enhance aid effectiveness. Originality: This study analyzes recipient countries’ ODA management system from aid effectiveness perspective, which is relatively understudied compared to donors’ aid management system. It specifies the scope of aid management system by developing a new analytical framework based on the four elements consisting of legalization and legislation, key implementing agencies, communciation and partnership, and monitoring and evaluation process. Methodology: The study conducts literature review on the relationship between aid effectiveness and recipient countries’ governance. Based on the analytical framework, case studies on Korea’s three key aid recipient countries, i.e. Lao PDR, Indonesia, and Vietnam are conducted. The study utilizes official government documents and academic literature, and incorporates feedback from experts. Result: Although the three countries had different aid management systems, following similarities were found: mid-long term national development strategies having close linkage to the aid management system; recipient countries strengthening governance and institutional basis for enhanced ownership and transparency; while the role and capacity of key implementing agencies leading to different types of aid inefficiency issues. This implies that ODA management system has direct impact on aid efficiency and effectiveness. Conclusion and Implication: The study shows the importance of donors’ approach to recipient countries based on the latter’s context. Also, in-depth understanding of recipient countries’ aid management system can help donors better identify potential areas of cooperation and design new projects through ODA. The same applies to Korea, which is a key donor in all three country cases.

Accumulation and Elimination: A Hard Decision-Based Multi-User Interference Cancellation Method in Satellite Communication System

With the increasing number of users in the Medium-Orbit (MEO) satellite communication system, multi-access interference (MAI) has become an important factor that restricts the reliability and capacity of the system. Additionally, the low carrier-power-to-noise-density ratio (C/N0) resulting from long-distance transmission poses a significant concern. The parallel interference cancellation (PIC) algorithm, utilized within the paradigm of multi-user detection (MUD), exhibits the capability to effectively mitigate the impact of MAI within the same system. Simultaneously, coherent accumulation serves as a means to substantially enhance the correct detection probability (Pcd) at low C/N0. In this study, a signal acquisition method for multi-user spread spectrum satellite receivers is proposed, which employs interference cancellation and coherent accumulation as its core mechanisms. Furthermore, we introduce a power estimation method based on the outcomes of signal acquisition, which can be integrated into the signal reconstruction module of PIC. Finally, we implement the aforementioned algorithms in both simulation and hardware platforms. Remarkably, we observe that when the interference-to-signal ratio (ISR) caused by MAI equals 20 dB, the improved algorithm attains a maximum Pcd of 0.95 within the high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) region, closely approaching the theoretical limit for the bit error rate (BER). The experimental results prove the effectiveness and feasibility of the acquisition algorithm. In summary, the enhanced algorithm holds vast potential for widespread implementation in multi-user spread spectrum communication systems.

Engineering a scalable and orthogonal platform for synthetic communication in mammalian cells

The rational design and implementation of synthetic mammalian communication systems can unravel fundamental design principles of cell communication circuits and offer a framework for engineering of designer cell consortia with potential applications in cell therapeutics. Here, we develop the foundations of an orthogonal, and scalable mammalian synthetic communication platform that exploits the programmability of synthetic receptors and selective affinity and tunability of diffusing coiled-coil peptides. Leveraging the ability of coiled-coils to exclusively bind to a cognate receptor, we demonstrate orthogonal receptor activation and Boolean logic operations at the receptor level. We show intercellular communication based on synthetic receptors and secreted multidomain coiled-coils and demonstrate a three-cell population system that can perform AND gate logic. Finally, we show CC-GEMS receptor-dependent therapeutic protein expression. Our work provides a modular and scalable framework for the engineering of complex cell consortia, with the potential to expand the aptitude of cell therapeutics and diagnostics.

Low-Profile P-I-N-Diode-Controlled Bezel Fit Radiation-Pattern Reconfigurable Antenna Arrays for 5G Smartphones

The spatial coverage of a 5G smartphone antenna array is an important factor to consider in the design and implementation of 5G wireless communication systems. In this paper, we present a compact, low-profile, and reconfigurable radiation pattern mm-wave smartphone antenna array that can provide high spatial coverage through its hybrid structure and beam-scanning capabilities. The proposed antenna array introduces PIN diode-controlled strips that enable beam tilting of (±)50° in the vertical direction with respect to a smartphone. In addition, the antenna array can beam scan (±)45° while maintaining a gain of >5 dBi. The compact antenna array measures 28 mm × 5.5 mm × 0.508 mm, including the director and reflector, which are situated next to the antenna. The array exhibited a wide –6 dB impedance bandwidth of 3480 MHz (26.42–29.90 GHz) and >25 dB of isolation in the simulation environment. The on/off state of the diode results in three operating modes of the antenna array: (a) broadside -x, (b) broadside, and (c) broadside +x modes. The radiation performance of the antenna array was analyzed in each operating mode, with and without a smartphone present. Additionally, power density analysis was performed for safety analysis using a frequency–dependent homogeneous hand and head model while the antenna array was installed in a smartphone model. Finally, an antenna array was fabricated, and the measurement results were verified, showing good agreement with the simulated results.

Implementation of Learning Communication System: A Case Study on Buddhist Religious Teachers in State Elementary School

This study aims to analyze and describe the implementation of online learning of Buddhist religious education teachers at State Elementary School 01 Sripendowo. This research uses a case study method with a qualitative approach. Data were obtained using observation, interview, and documentation methods. Furthermore, the data obtained were analyzed using the Miles and Huberman model. The existence of learning problems during the co-19 pandemic made researchers interested in conducting research related to the online learning communication system. The results showed that teachers used communication elements following the model given by Laswel. In addition, the findings also explain that the teacher takes seven practical strategic steps in carrying out the online learning communication system. This study also found five common barriers experienced by teachers during the implementation of online learning.

Simple Design and Implementation of Two-Way Communication System through UAV

In this paper, an Unmanned Air Vehicle (UAV) which can carry and communicate with an Unmanned Ground Vehicle (UGV - Rover) is designed and realized. In this context, one UAV and one Rover are designed separately. The Rover is designed much smaller than the UAV as it is carried by the UAV and it can make its own movement after leaving the UAV near the area where it will be operated. At this stage, the carrier UAV acts as a communication relay, providing communication between the central control station and the Rover. Using nRF24L01 transceiver modules on each of the central control station, carrier UAV and the Rover, communication between them is achieved via programming as being master or slave. The relay communication system is designed on Serial Peripheral Interface (SPI) protocolof nRF24L01 transceiver modules. The Rover is also equipped with a camera on it to record videos and to take pictures. Both the UAV and the Rover were designed especially in order to reduce the energy consumption of them. Hence the Rover is designed as small in size and light as possible. By taking into account the equipment, batteries and motors that the vehicles will carry, the best design has been tried to be implemented in order to increase their ranges and reduce energy consumptions. It is possible to use it in the defence industry for military purposes, in places where bomb detection or long-range access is difficult with a single UAV, where land access is required.

Assessment of quality of signal transmission process in focs with DWDM

The power of a group DWDM signal increases nonlinear interference in the optical path, especially the value of the interference of the FWM. These interfering factors degrade signal transmission quality and can completely disable the WDM system. Therefore, when designing a DWDM system, it is necessary to optimize the power of the transmitted signal to minimize the probability of error in the optical channel. The article presents the research results and analysis of factors affecting the quality of fiber-optic communication systems with wave separation of channels. Selecting the optimal power level of the group signal and evaluating the transmission quality of optical communication channels in WDM allows us to solve the problem of science-based design, implementation, and effective operation of advanced optical communication systems with wave division of channels.

Engineering Semantic Communication: A Survey

As the global demand for data has continued to rise exponentially, some have begun turning to the idea of semantic communication as a means of efficiently meeting this demand. Pushing beyond the boundaries of conventional communication systems, semantic communication focuses on the accurate recovery of the <italic xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">meaning</i> conveyed from source to receiver, as opposed to the accurate recovery of transmitted symbols. In this survey, we aim to provide a comprehensive view of the history and current state of semantic communication and the techniques for engineering this higher level of communication. A survey of the current literature reveals four broad approaches to engineering semantic communication. We term the earliest of these approaches classical semantic information, which seeks to extend information-theoretic results to include semantic information. A second approach makes use of knowledge graphs to achieve semantic communication, and a third utilizes the power of modern deep learning techniques to facilitate this communication. The fourth approach focuses on the significance of information, rather than its meaning, to achieve efficient, goal-oriented communication. We discuss each of these four approaches and their corresponding studies in detail, and provide some challenges and opportunities that pertain to each approach. Finally, we introduce a novel approach to semantic communication, which we term context-based semantic communication. Inspired by the way in which humans naturally communicate with one another, this context-based approach provides a general, optimization-based design framework for semantic communication systems. Together, this survey provides a useful guide for the design and implementation of semantic communication systems.

5G Communication Systems: Network Slicing and Virtual Private Network Architecture

5G communication systems are being rolled out with multiple technological solutions and applications being fielded on existing as well as enhanced infrastructure. The utilization of 5G systems and infrastructure by verticals over different platforms as well as industries is achieved with slicing. Slicing in 5G provides guaranteed resources for end users of vertical industries and applications over varied platforms, architecture, and infrastructure. Standards for network slicing in 5G have been formulated by 3GPP and further specifications are being released. Implementation of slicing at various layers are being researched. This Paper reviews the advancements in development of specifications for Layer 2 implementation of slicing and communication systems using virtual Private Network and Virtual Transport Network and its architecture. The enhancements to communication systems using existing Multi-Protocol Label Switching (MPLS) and its exploitation based on slicing technology has been reviewed. The research challenges and way ahead on same have been discussed including end resource allocation.

Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) Implementation Program for children with autism spectrum disorder.

The aim of this study was to evaluate a program for implementing of the PECS in children with non-verbal ASD or with minimal verbalization in a school clinic belonging to the Unified Health System - SUS. This is a longitudinal study. The sample consisted of 22 children with nonverbal ASD or with minimal verbalization; 17 boys and 5 girls, aged 6 to 12 years old. The program consisted of 24 sessions of individual speech language therapy with the presence of the family member and followed the six phases originally proposed by the PECS Training Manual. All children reached the first three phases. About 82% reached phase IV; 64% phase V and 19% phase VI. Family adherence was 96%. It was possible to test a PECS implementation program in 24 sessions and verify that children were able to achieve phases of discrimination and sentence construction, besides demonstrating gain in their lexical repertoire and reduction of non-adaptative behaviors.
