Engagement With a Youth Community Advisory Board to Develop and Refine a Facebook HPV Vaccination Promotion Intervention (#HPVvaxtalks) for Young Black Adults (18-26 years old).

Human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination rates remain suboptimal among young Black adults (18-26 years). Research focused on HPV vaccination among young Black adults is limited. Guided by the Theory of Planned Behavior, we developed #HPVvaxtalks, a theoretically grounded and culturally appropriate Facebook intervention in collaboration with a youth community advisory board (YCAB) to increase awareness of HPV risk factors, risk perception, HPV vaccine-related knowledge, vaccination intention, and uptake for Black individuals. Engagement with YCAB members fostered opportunity to discuss priorities reflecting the community's interest and make #HPVvaxtalks more relevant. This article describes the YCAB engagement and collaborative process in the development and refinement of posts/messages for #HPVvaxtalks. Five young Black adults (18-26 years of age) were invited to become members of a YCAB. YCAB reviewed the preliminary version of #HPVvaxtalks intervention materials and provided critiques and suggestions for refinement. Following the completion of the collaborative process, YCAB members completed individual interviews to reflect on the process. Feedback from YCAB participants focused on the relevance, engagement, clarity, and organization of the content and the media utilized. Participants suggested using "memes" to improve cultural relevance and engagement for young Black individuals. All YCAB members expressed satisfaction with the development process. Collaboration with a YCAB was crucial in developing a culturally relevant and acceptable #HPVvaxtalks intervention, which includes 40 messages/posts for young Black adults. Undergoing the iterative process of intervention development and refinement with the priority population can be an essential component in the design and implementation of health promotion activities.

Prevalence and factors associated with metabolic syndrome in university students and academic staff in Bangladesh

Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a group of medical conditions that increase the risk of cardiovascular disease, stroke, and type 2 diabetes. While there are numerous studies on the prevalence of MetS in the general adult population worldwide, limited information exists regarding its prevalence among university students and academic staff. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of MetS and associated risk factors among Bangladesh university students and academic staff. For this cross-sectional study, 583 participants were randomly selected from university students (n = 281) and academic staff (n = 302) in Bangladesh. The participants' fasting blood samples were collected, and their serum lipid profile levels, fasting blood glucose, and other parameters were measured using standard methods. MetS was defined according to the NCEP-ATP III model guidelines. Additionally, a questionnaire was administered to the participants to gather information on socio-demographics, lifestyle risk behaviours, and personal medical history. Multivariate logistic regression models were used to determine the risk factors associated with MetS. Overall, the prevalence of MetS was 27.7% in students and 47.7% in staff. There was a significant difference (p < 0.01) in MetS prevalence between male students (34.8%) and female students (17.2%). In contrast, it was comparatively higher in female staff (52.3%) than in male staff (45.8%), although the difference was not statistically significant. The prevalence of MetS and its components increased with age in student and staff groups. The most common component of MetS was low levels of HDL-C, which affected 78% and 81.4% of the students and staff, respectively. Logistic regression modelling showed that increased age, BMI, hypertension, dyslipidemia, low physical activity, and smoking were significantly associated with MetS in students (at least p < 0.05 for all cases). On the other hand, increased age and BMI, hypertension, and dyslipidemia were significantly associated with MetS in academic staff (at least p < 0.05 for all cases). In conclusion, this study indicates a high prevalence of MetS in university students and staff in Bangladesh. Age, BMI, hypertension and dyslipidemia were independently associated with the risk of MetS in both groups. The findings emphasize the importance of interventions for students and staff in academic settings in Bangladesh. It is crucial to implement health promotion activities such as healthy diet and exercise programs more rigorously. Further research with more representative samples is needed to get more clear insights into MetS prevalence in this particular population subgroup for targeted interventions.

How to create a healthy kindergarten – lessons learned from a participatory project in Germany

Abstract Issue/problem Families play a central role in children's health. However, many health-promoting programs do not reach families who would need these the most. Through the involvement of families in the planning and implementation of health promotion activities, e.g. in kindergarten, acceptance and the adoption of health-promoting behavior can be increased in the family setting. Description of the problem The central question was how to successfully involve families in the planning and implementation, especially those who are otherwise not reached by programs. In a three-year project, six kindergartens in Germany planned and implemented health-promoting actions with families and network partners. Each institution organized search conferences and formed project groups. A youth welfare agency trained and accompanied the kindergarten staff to coordinate the participatory processes. Results Participatory processes emerged in all institutions despite corona-specific challenges. However, the degree of involvement varied. Staff, families and network partners identified needs and implemented appropriate actions. These were somewhat similar to existing programs also in other countries, but the involvement of multiple parties produced different results because the participants tied in with their own interests and resources. Lessons All parents are keen to be involved in their children's health. However, in order to involve them, a suitable framework is needed that corresponds to their family life for example, through the appropriate choice of place, time and form. In addition to the resources available, the participatory culture of the institutions and the attitudes of the staff had a major impact on involvement. Training and support in participatory processes are necessary to develop dialogue and joint action and to involve families in a sustainable way. These findings are transferable internationally. Key messages • Family involvement in children's health promotion is essential to make a real contribution to their healthy development. • It is therefore essential to create low-threshold opportunities that take into account families’ living environments and lifestyles.

Evaluation of a school health promotion program using the holistic WHO approach

Abstract Background A school health promotion program guided by the WHO approach is implemented in approximately 40% of public secondary schools in Lower Austria. Program advisors support participating schools in developing a systematic plan for the promotion of health and wellbeing of all students and teachers. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of the program and identify potential areas for program optimization. Methods We applied a non-randomized controlled cluster trial with pre- and post-measurements (T0: October 2021 and T1: June 2022). We invited students, teachers and school principals of 30 program schools (PS) and 29 non-program schools (NPS) to fill in an online-questionnaire. We analyzed data of 2706 students, 451 teachers and 47 principals. Results The study showed that PS had established more favorable structures for school health promotion (HP) than NPS (e.g., established HP-team, financial resources setting objectives). Although PS implemented more HP activities than NPS (8.5 versus 6.3 activities), they merely took place as one-time events. At student level, an advantage for the PS over time was shown with respect to two out of 19 endpoints (subjective health status [b = 0.19, p &amp;lt; 0.001] and uptake of additionally offered physical activity lessons [b = 0.09; p = 0.04]). In two out of 19 endpoints, an advantage was also shown for the NPS (opportunities for physical activity during lessons and breaks [b = 0.06; p = 0.001], opportunities for participation [b = 0.20; p = 0.001]). At teacher level, in five out of 25 endpoints, the teachers of PS reported more favorable results than NPS’ teachers. Conclusions A supportive structure for school health promotion may be helpful for implementing more health promoting activities in schools. However, these activities do not seem to be profound enough to have an impact on the students. Teachers would need more support in implementing HP activities. Key messages • Structures for implementing health promoting activities are in place. • However, the implemented activities did only show limited effect on students.

Background: According to the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2018, as many as 2.4 billion people in the world or 1 out of 3 people do not have access to adequate sanitation facilities, and less than 1 billion people defecate in the open, causing various negative impacts, especially related to the spread of disease and public health. In Indonesia in 2018, the National Health Survey showed that the achievement of houses implementing PHBS (classification IV) was only around 39.22%. in Bekasi Regency implementing household PHBS at the Cibatu Health Center, In 2022, the percentage of households with PHBS is 45.3%. and in 2023 the percentage of households with PHBS is 64.5%. This happens due to the community's lack of knowledge and attitudes toward implementing PHBS culture in everyday life. Objectives: The purpose of this community service is to provide education in the form of health promotion regarding the culture of implementing PHBS in household settings in daily life at the Posyandu Tunas Mekar XIII in the working area of the Cibatu Health Center, Bekasi Regency. Methods: The method used is health promotion regarding the culture of implementing PHBS in household arrangements related to preventing the occurrence of disease by implementing PHBS in Kp. Pegaulan in the Work Area of the Cibatu Health Center, Bekasi Regency. This activity was carried out at the Tunas Mekar XIII Posyandu Kp. Social intercourse in Bekasi Regency. The target of this activity is all housewives who live in the Tumas Mekar XIII Posyandu area, Kp. Pegaulan, Bekasi Regency. Educational media used are posters and leaflets. The pre-test and post-test are used to measure this activity's success. Results: The results obtained from the implementation of health promotion activities to increase public knowledge in cultivating the correct implementation of household PHBS in everyday life are 75% or as many as 18 people. Conclusion: The conclusion drawn from the results of this activity is that there are still people who do not know and have not implemented PHBS properly and correctly, this is one of the echoes of the causes of a disease.

Exploration of Challenges Faced by Peer Educators in the Implementation of Health Promotion Activities at the Institutions of Higher Learning

Peer education programs encompass a variety of health-related topics; however, it is unclear what difficulties peer educators encounter when putting such health promotion initiatives into practice in institutions of higher learning. The objectives of this review are therefore to explore the challenges that peer educators face in the implementation of health promotion activities at the institutions of higher learning and to give recommendations on how to enhance the peer education program to better prepare peer educators for their role and to better prepare them for any upcoming obstacles. This qualitative study used a non-empirical research design, analysing primary research papers and grey literature using a systematic review technique. The study's time frame was limited to 2013-2023, and non-sequential preference adoption was taken into account. The conclusions of this study, which relied on the reviews of standard and fundamental research papers on this topic, were made credible by employing the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses and the Critical Appraisal Skill Programme. Peer education program at institutions of higher learning proved to have a positive impact on the health and well-being of students however the peer educators encounter some challenges when executing their duties such as little knowledge and training on some health topics, lack of interest on some health topics, lack of compensation and lack of support among others. Peer education, which is believed to be a useful technique in encouraging students to adopt healthy behaviours, is an interpersonal endeavour that is influenced by the environments, institutional backdrop, key individuals, and the participants' attitudes and aspirations.

Prioritizing decision-making of health and well-being response tactics: Incorporating organizational and individual shared demands.

As a major energy source in China, the occupational health and well-being (OHW) of miners is a priority. Various statistical techniques have been used to identify factors or assess OHW to provide valuable information for the implementation of health promotion activities. The main bottleneck is the limited focus on solutions that address the demands of both organizations and individuals, and scientific and effective decision-making is pending. Therefore, this study describes the OHW mechanism covering both antecedents and consequences through the driving force-pressure-state-impact-response model. A probabilistic model of management tradeoff analysis was established by using a Bayesian decision network. Causal relationships and dependencies between multiple factors are captured visually. The model was verified and applied with samples of miners (N=816). The results showed that the comprehensive strategy (R5) was the best tactic, and the management effect of stress (R2) and vulnerability (R3) was prominent. This study provides a valuable tool for managers to identify priority management factors. Prioritizing tactics formulated from dual demands of organizational and individual can ensure project feasibility, operability, and effectiveness. This study is a novel attempt to combine theory with practice, which is timely and necessary for management.

Implementing health-promoting activities in diverse primary school contexts in the Netherlands: practical lessons learnt

PurposeTo gain insight into factors enhancing or obstructing implementation in various school-settings, which is vital for widespread dissemination and sustainable integration of school-based health-promoting interventions.Design/methodology/approachA mixed methods multisite comparative case study to investigate (factors influencing) the implementation of health-promoting activities in twelve Dutch primary schools. Data were collected during three school years (2019–2022) through observations, questionnaires and interviews.FindingsThe project resulted in the implementation of small, incidental activities. Important reasons for the limited implementation were lack of commitment and bottom-up involvement. School directors and teachers were not involved early on in the project, which limited project support and commitment. On school level, directors largely carried project responsibility themselves, hindering project sustainability and integration. Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) made that schools had difficulties forming long-term visions and plans. Other observed barriers included limited perceived necessity to change, high workload and high staff turnover. Important facilitators were the presence of a process coordinator and sharing experiences from other schools.Originality/valueThis research provided valuable insights into (factors influencing) the implementation of health-promoting initiatives in diverse, real-world school contexts. More extensive support is needed to create commitment, bottom-up involvement and a project vision. Furthermore, empowering in-school champions and/or school-wide project groups is desirable to decrease schools' dependence on long-term external support. The findings can be used by various stakeholders throughout development, adoption and implementation and can facilitate widespread dissemination and sustainable integration of school-based health-promoting interventions.

THE ROLE OF SONPOs IN THE PRESERVATION AND PROMOTION OF PUBLIC HEALTH IN THE KRASNOYARSK REGION

The paper presents modern approaches to the preservation and promotion of health among different gender and age groups of the population of the region through the delivery of non-medical activities by socially oriented non-profit organizations (SONPOs) that implement projects to preserve public health, to form medical literacy, awareness and to carry out modern methods of health promotion. The relevance of the implementation of such approaches is due to the deteriorating health of the population of the Krasnoyarsk region, which, first of all, is evidenced by the negative dynamics of demographic indicators in the region. An analysis of the legal and regulatory framework for the activities of SONPOs in the aspect of the implementation of non-medical services to the population is given, indicating the wide opportunities for SONPOs to participate in projects to preserve public health. The following methods have been applied in the study – analytical, sociological, and statistical.&#x0D; Data obtained as a result of the survey have been used to analyze changes in the patient’s medical and social status that let evaluate the effectiveness of one-year implementation of health promotion activities by SONPOs. The criteria for evaluating the effectiveness of SONPOs non-medical activities were indicators of changes in the level of medical literacy among the participants, in comparison with people who did not participate in the activities, and the improvement of the medical and social status of patients in dynamics. All of that demonstrates the need for widespread replication of the described activity of SONPOs in the region.

Using implementation mapping to develop strategies for preventing non-communicable diseases in Japanese small- and medium-sized enterprises.

IntroductionWorkplace programs to prevent non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in the workplace can help prevent the incidence of chronic diseases among employees, provide health benefits, and reduce the risk of financial loss. Nevertheless, these programs are not fully implemented, particularly in small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). The purpose of this study was to develop implementation strategies for health promotion activities to prevent NCDs in Japanese SMEs using Implementation Mapping (IM) to present the process in a systematic, transparent, and replicable manner.MethodsQualitative methods using interviews and focus group discussions with 15 SMEs and 20 public health nurses were conducted in a previous study. This study applied the Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research and IM to analyze this dataset to develop implementation strategies suitable for SMEs in Japan.ResultsIn task 2 of the IM, we identified performance objectives, determinants, and change objectives for each implementation stage: adoption, implementation, and maintenance; to identify the required actors and actions necessary to enhance implementation effectiveness. Twenty-two performance objectives were identified in each implementation stage. In task 3 of the IM, the planning group matched behavioral change methods (e.g., modeling and setting of graded tasks, framing, self-re-evaluation, and environmental re-evaluation) with determinants to address the performance objectives. We used a consolidated framework for implementation research to select the optimal behavioral change technique for performance objectives and determinants and designed a practical application. The planning team agreed on the inclusion of sixteen strategies from the final strategies list compiled and presented to it for consensus, for the overall implementation plan design.DiscussionThis paper provides the implementation strategies for NCDs prevention for SMEs in Japan following an IM protocol. Although the identified implementation strategies might not be generalizable to all SMEs planning implementation of health promotion activities, because they were tailored to contextual factors identified in a formative research. However, identified performance objectives and implementation strategies can help direct the next steps in launching preventive programs against NCDs in SMEs.

Hubungan Pengetahuan dan Personal Hygiene Terhadap Kesehatan Reproduksi

Reproductive health is a state of overall health that includes physical, mental and social life related to reproductive organs, functions and processes. Reproductive health greatly determines the fertility of every individual, so it is important for people to get correct and correct information about reproductive health. The results of the 2019 national analysis show that 39.1% of the population in Indonesia practice clean and healthy living behaviors. So that the changes made in 2019 had an impact on achieving a clean and healthy lifestyle index. Efforts to achieve a clean and healthy life behavior index are by implementing health promotion activities with the help of promotional media (pocket books). The purpose of writing this literature review is to determine the relationship between personal hygiene and reproductive health. This study uses the Literature Review method, namely by searching for article data sources taken using Google Scholar, Garuda Portal and Pubmed. The period of the articles used as references is from 2019 - 2021. From the results of the selection that was carried out using the inclusion and exclusion criteria, 10 articles were found to be reviewed. The results obtained from the 10 reviewed articles all state that there is a significant relationship between personal hygiene and reproductive health.

Preparedness of Youth in Facing Menarche in the Era of the Industrial Revolution 4.0

Adolescence is a transition from puberty to adulthood. This period, there will be many changes either physical, psychological, or social that teenagers will experience one of them is Menarche. Mental readiness is urgently needed in the face of menarche due to anxiety and fear of appearing, and indispensable knowledge of self-care during menstruation. The purpose of this research is to know the characteristics and readiness of adolescents in the face of menarche in the era of industrial revolution 4.0. The type of research method used is descriptive survey. The population in this study was 45 pegandon junior high school students. Proportional sampling technique. Data analysis is done with statistics deskriftiv. The results of the student readiness study with less than 75.6%, and the readiness category in the good category as much as 24.4% of respondents. It is expected that health officials will further improve the implementation of health promotion activities especially in adolescents about the onses of menstruation so that teenagers are better prepared in the face of menarche.

How does health education media and methods could mostly attract for teenagers? cross-sectional study on junior and senior high school students in Bima-nusa Tenggara Barat, Indonesia

Objective: To identify how attractive is health promotion media for prevention substance and drug abuse at teenagers. Methodology: This cross-sectional study included students from 20 schools in Bima. We used purposive sampling method and selected 723 respondents from grade 7-12 students. The instrument used was a questionnaire. Data analysis was done using univariate and bivariate analyzed and Chi-Square test. Results: Out of 723 students, 77.6% chose audiovisual media as the most desirable health promotion media and school was the most desirable place for implementing health promotion activities with a duration of 30min-1 hours (61.5%) with a frequency of more than once a year (73.3%). Health workers and non-health workers were equally desirable as educators with the application of cultural elements in health promotion activities (66.9%). The results of the bivariate analysis using the Chi-Square test showed that gender (P=0.004, OR=1.677), student education level (P=0.010, OR=1.522) and device ownership (P=0.041, OR=0.522) were significantly associated with the choice of how to apply cultural elements in the promotion of drug abuse prevention activities. Conclusion: The most attractive drug prevention promotion was media for teenagers and needs to be integrated with cultural values with attractive audiovisual.

Assessing the Quality of Care at Primary Health Care Level in Two Pilot Regions of Albania.

The quality of care (QoC) of primary health care (PHC) services in Albania faces challenges on multiple levels including governance, access, infrastructure and health care workers. In addition, there is a lack of trust in the latter. The Health for All Project (HAP) funded by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation therefore aimed at enhancing the population's health by improving PHC services and implementing health promotion activities following a multi-strategic health system strengthening approach. The objective of this article is to compare QoC before and after the 4 years of project implementation. A cross-sectional study was implemented at 38 PHC facilities in urban and rural locations in the Diber and Fier regions of Albania in 2015 and in 2018. A survey measured the infrastructure of the different facilities, provider–patient interactions through clinical observation and patient satisfaction. During clinical observations, special attention was given to diabetes and hypertensive patients. Infrastructure scores improved from base- to endline with significant changes seen on national level and for rural facilities (p < 0.01). Facility infrastructure and overall cleanliness, hygiene and basic/essential medical equipment and supplies improved at endline, while for public accountability/transparency and guidelines and materials no significant change was observed. The overall clinical observation score increased at endline overall, in both areas and in rural and urban setting. However, infection prevention and control procedures and diabetes treatment still experienced relatively low levels of performance at endline. Patient satisfaction on PHC services is generally high and higher yet at endline. The changes observed in the 38 PHC facilities in two regions in Albania between 2015 and 2018 were overall positive with improvements seen at all three levels assessed, e.g., infrastructure, service provision and patient satisfaction. However, to gain overall improvements in the QoC and move toward a more efficient and sustainable health system requires continuous investments in infrastructure alongside interventions at the provider and user level.

The role of occupational health services in cancer prevention - which factors determine the implementation of preventive measures?

Epidemiological data on cancer diseases are alarming. The workplace has become an increasingly important site for disseminating health information and implementing health promotion activities. Occupational medicine physicians (OMPs) have the opportunity to carry out primary and secondary preventive activities focused on civilization diseases, especially cancer. The aim of this study was to evaluate the potential of OMPs in cancer prevention, including the analysis of factors determining the implementation of preventive measures, as part of standard healthcare for employees. The study was conducted among 362 OMPs. The interviews were carried out by the computer assisted telephone interview (CATI) method. Over 60% of the surveyed OMPs are ready to implement cancer preventive activities among employees. The doctors with the longest seniority in occupational health services are more likely to declare unwillingness to implement cancer preventive activities. Patient's consent, informing women about the program and adjusting the time of the medical visit are the most important conditions for introducing cancer prevention programs by OMPs. Neither seniority nor the number of examinations performed by a physician influenced the currently implemented cancer preventive activities as part of occupational health services (including the evaluation of cancer risk factors occurrence among employees). In Poland, OMPs are willing to implement cancer preventive activities among employees, but their current activity in this area is limited and needs development. The most specific actions should be addressed to doctors with the longest seniority in occupational health services, who are frequently unwilling to implement cancer preventive activities. Strengthening the preventive potential of Polish occupational health services requires a systemic approach to the scope and way of action of healthcare professionals. Parental Compliance towards Oral Health Education among Preschoolers with Special Healthcare Needs.

Background: Young children with special needs greatly rely on their parents to support their daily living activities; parental compliance may have great impact on the implementation of health promotion activities among those children. This study aimed to investigate the parental compliance towards oral health education (OHE) among children with special healthcare needs (SHCN). Method: The participants were 306 parents whose children had participated in a 24-month OHE program for preschool children with SHCN. The primary outcome of this cross-sectional study was parental compliance towards the OHE program. Parents’ oral health literacy (OHL) was assessed by a validated tool. Parents’ socioeconomic status, attitudes towards OHE topics, perceptions of children’s oral hygiene status, and usefulness of OHE materials were collected via questionnaires. Results: A higher dropout rate was observed among parents who perceived that their children had unfavorable oral hygiene status (p = 0.038), or parents who had poor OHL skills (p = 0.015). Parental noncompliance was more likely to be observed among parents who perceived that the OHE materials were not useful for their children (OR = 3.63, 95% CI 1.56 to 8.47, p = 0.003), or parents whose children had been diagnosed with developmental delays (OR = 5.45, 95% CI 1.59 to18.74, p = 0.007). Conclusion: Non-compliance existed among parents whose children had received OHE intervention. Parental compliance towards OHE intervention might be associated with parents’ OHL skills, usefulness of OHE materials, and children’s developmental conditions. OHE programs should be individually tailored to support children whose parents are at a higher risk of noncompliant behaviors.

Health promotion in enterprises counteracting the consequences of workforce ageing. How does it differ from interventions in other companies and what kind of barriers does it face?

The aim of the article is to address the question of whether companies implementing personnel's health promotion to counteract the consequences of workforce ageing differ in their health-related activities from enterprises not having such a motivation. The analyzed differences concern the frequency of implementing and evaluating selected health promotion interventions, assessing employees' health needs and expectations, managers' interest in population ageing, and other motives of health promotion implementation. Moreover, obstacles to health promotion in the context of ageing are analyzed. Directions of supporting enterprises in diminishing the consequences of this demographic process via health promotion are recommended. Quantitative analysis: standardized computer-assisted personal interviews with representatives of management boards (October- November 2017). Sample: 940 companies from Poland implementing health promotion activities (including 424 organizations willing przedsięwzięto counteract the consequences of workforce ageing), selected from a representative sample of 1000 enterprises employing ≥50 people. Qualitative analysis: focus groups interviews (FGIs) with employers concerning their attitudes to managing personnel's health in the context of population ageing (March 2017). Sample: 64 respondents in 8 FGIs. Companies promoting employees' health to diminish the consequences of workforce ageing more often implement and evaluate most workplace health-related activities, and provide more reasons for promoting personnel's health. Their managers are more often interested in the issue of demographic changes, and they less frequently complain about the obstacles of health promotion implementation. Major obstacles are employers' reluctance or impossibility to pay for health promotion, low managers' awareness/know-how concerning health promotion, insufficient human and infrastructure resources, unfavorable employees' attitudes, and disadvantageous legal/fiscal issues. Companies' willingness to counteract implications of personnel's ageing is conducive to their engagement in health promotion. The dissemination/intensification of workplace health-oriented activities, which fosters minimizing the consequences of demographic changes, requires increasing employers' interest in the issue of population ageing and health promotion as a tool of coping with this problem, facilitating gaining the knowledge of workplace health promotion management by companies' representatives, and diminishing legislative/fiscal barriers to the implementation of workplace health-related activities. Implementation of health promotion activities in mental health care in Denmark

Abstract Background People suffering from serious mental illness face a high risk of lifestyle-related health problems, and higher mortality and morbidity rates than the rest of the population. The solution to the problem has been to integrate health promotion initiatives in mental health care. In Denmark psychiatric departments have implemented a new strategy and mental health nurses are now asked to screen for risk factors. The aim of this study is to explore how mental health nurses experience working with the screening of risk factors amongst patients with mental illnesses as part of their health promotion activities. Methods We employed a qualitative research design using an interactive approach. Two focus group interviews (n = 7; n = 5) were conducted with mental health nurses attending a mental health specialist training in Denmark in 2018. The interviews lasted 1 ½ hours, were recorded and transcribed verbatim. Data were organized using NVivo 12 software and a qualitative content analysis was used to describe experiences in a conceptual form. Results The implementation of health promotion activities in mental health care created two different types of dilemmas for the mental health nurses: 1) dilemmas related to health promotion that involved discrepancies between patients’ autonomy and wishes, and the health promotion activities that were offered; 2) system-related dilemmas originated from structural factors and working with screening for risk factors. The mental health nurses developed various strategies and found new solutions to navigate these dilemmas. Conclusions Mental health nurses found it challenging to implement health promotion activities in mental health care, although they generally found these activities meaningful. They developed new strategies to overcome the dilemmas. Key messages Health promotion initiatives need to be adapted to mental health nurses’ existing mental healthcare practices in order for them to be meaningful. Screening of risk factors is insufficient as a health promotion activity in mental health care.
