Bioinspired Self-Adhesive Multifunctional Lubricated Coating for Biomedical Implant Applications.

In the realm of clinical applications, the concern surrounding biomedical device-related infections (BDI) is paramount. To mitigate the risk associated with BDI, enhancing surface characteristics such as lubrication and antibacterial efficacy is considered as a strategic approach. This study delineated the synthesis of a multifunctional copolymer, embodying self-adhesive, lubricating, and antibacterial properties, achieved through free radical polymerization and a carbodiimide coupling reaction. The copolymer was adeptly modified on the surface of stainless steel 316L (SS316L) substrates by employing a facile dip-coating technique. Comprehensive characterizations were performed by using an array of analytical techniques including Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, optical interferometry, scanning electron microscopy, and atomic force microscopy. Nanoscale tribological assessments revealed a notable reduction in the value of the friction coefficient of the copolymer-coated SS316L substrates compared to bare SS316L samples. The coating demonstrated exceptional resistance to protein adsorption, as evidenced in protein contamination models employing bovine serum albumin and fibrinogen. The bactericidal efficacy of the copolymer-modified surfaces was significantly improved against pathogenic strains such as Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. Additionally, in vitro evaluations of blood compatibility and cellular compatibility underscored the remarkable anticoagulant performance and biocompatibility. Collectively, these findings indicated that the developed copolymer coating represented a promising candidate, with its facile modification approach, for augmenting lubrication and antifouling properties in the field of biomedical implant applications.

Synthesis of microporous titanium surface with aligned pores through changes of currents during electrochemical process

This paper reports the synthesis of microporous Ti surfaces with aligned pores by applying a different current during electrochemical process for application in cell-surface interaction study and biomedical implants. As the microporous Ti surfaces were synthesized by current from (0.5–4)A, the microstructure of the Ti surfaces was shifted from a relative smooth to microporous one that was observed to have an aligned pore surface. Optical images showed that the micropore sizes in ∼(85.4–224.4)µm. The roughness of the microporous Ti was significantly higher than that of the Ti by a factor of approximately 5 to 7. Confocal laser scanning microscope showed excellent cell attachment and preferential growth on the microporous Ti with aligned channels after 72 h of culturing which could be important for cell-surface interactions study and biomedical implants.

Progress in the Optimization of Compositional Design and Thermomechanical Processing of Metastable β Ti Alloys for Biomedical Applications.

Over the past few years, significant research and development in the manufacturing industry related to the medical field has been done. The aim has been to improve existing biomaterials and bioimplants by exploring new methods and strategies. Beta titanium alloys, known for their exceptional strength-to-modulus ratio, corrosion resistance, biocompatibility, and ease of shaping, are expected to play a crucial role in manufacturing the next generation of biomedical equipment. To meet the specific requirements of human bone, researchers have employed key techniques like compositional design and thermomechanical processing routes to advance biomaterial development. These materials find extensive applications in orthopedic, orthodontic, and cardiovascular biomedical implants. Several studies have shown that precise material composition, with appropriate heat treatment and suitable mechanical approaches, can yield the desired mechanical properties for bone implants. In this review article, we explore the evolution of alloys at different stages, with a particular focus on their preparation for use in biomedical implants. The primary focus is on designing low-modulus β Ti alloy compositions and employing processing techniques to achieve high strength while maintaining a low young modulus suitable for biomedical applications.

Exploring the Synergistic Potential of Pectin-Chitosan Composites for Advanced Drug Delivery and Biomedical Implant Applications: A Comprehensive Review and Future Perspectives

The polysaccharides pectin and chitosan are derived from the fruit peels and exoskeletons of crustaceans and insects, respectively. Their biocompatibility and renewability make them suitable for use in food products. The size of the swelling and degradation of these cells can be controlled using different combinations. Pectin and chitosan are useful as medication delivery systems, where they can be integrated to control the dosages and residence times of pharmaceuticals. They have a wide range of applications such as wound dressings, body fat reducers, tissue engineering agents, and drug delivery agents. Addressing teeth loss with the use of dental implants is a critical element of dental care. In most cases, healing is time-consuming and painful. As a result of adding new materials to the implant surface, the healing process would accelerate, and medications would be delivered to the implant site with greater efficiency.

The potential of organic piezoelectric materials for next-generation implantable biomedical devices

Piezoelectricity or piezoelectric effect is a phenomenon by which mechanical energy is converted into electrical energy and vice versa. Piezoelectric effect has been observed in several organic materials. Therefore, in past few years organic piezoelectric materials have received significant research interests in biomedical applications and specifically for fabrication of implantable biomedical devices because of their high piezoelectric performance, excellent biocompatibility and biodegradability, superior mechanical properties, and cheap fabrication process. This article provides a comprehensive review of the recent research progress on organic piezoelectric materials. It extensively covers the piezoelectric properties and preparation methods of different organic piezoelectric materials including amino acids, peptides, proteins, polysaccharides, and polymers (such as PVDF, PLLA, PHB), as well as their representative implantable biomedical device applications namely biosensing, tissue regeneration, and drug delivery. Finally, the article discusses the challenges and future directions of this research field.

An asynchronous wireless network for capturing event-driven data from large populations of autonomous sensors

Networks of spatially distributed radiofrequency identification sensors could be used to collect data in wearable or implantable biomedical applications. However, the development of scalable networks remains challenging. Here we report a wireless radiofrequency network approach that can capture sparse event-driven data from large populations of spatially distributed autonomous microsensors. We use a spectrally efficient, low-error-rate asynchronous networking concept based on a code-division multiple-access method. We experimentally demonstrate the network performance of several dozen submillimetre-sized silicon microchips and complement this with large-scale in silico simulations. To test the notion that spike-based wireless communication can be matched with downstream sensor population analysis by neuromorphic computing techniques, we use a spiking neural network machine learning model to decode prerecorded open source data from eight thousand spiking neurons in the primate cortex for accurate prediction of hand movement in a cursor control task.

Reversibly Sticking Metals and Graphite to Hydrogels and Tissues.

We have discovered that hard, electrical conductors (e.g., metals or graphite) can be adhered to soft, aqueous materials (e.g., hydrogels, fruit, or animal tissue) without the use of an adhesive. The adhesion is induced by a low DC electric field. As an example, when 5 V DC is applied to graphite slabs spanning a tall cylindrical gel of acrylamide (AAm), a strong adhesion develops between the anode (+) and the gel in about 3 min. This adhesion endures after the field is removed, and we term it as hard-soft electroadhesion or EA[HS]. Depending on the material, adhesion occurs at the anode (+), cathode (-), or both electrodes. In many cases, EA[HS] can be reversed by reapplying the field with reversed polarity. Adhesion via EA[HS] to AAm gels follows the electrochemical series: e.g., it occurs with copper, lead, and tin but not nickel, iron, or zinc. We show that EA[HS] arises via electrochemical reactions that generate chemical bonds between the electrode and the polymers in the gel. EA[HS] can create new hybrid materials, thus enabling applications in robotics, energy storage, and biomedical implants. Interestingly, EA[HS] can even be achieved underwater, where typical adhesives cannot be used.

Multiobjective optimization of process parameters of AZ91D/AgNPs/TiO2 composite fabricated by friction stir processing using response surface methodology and desirability

PurposeThis paper aims to determine the optimum parametric settings for yielding superior mechanical properties, namely, ultimate tensile strength (UTS), yield strength (YS) and percentage elongation (EL) of AZ91D/AgNPs/TiO2 hybrid composite fabricated by friction stir processing.Design/methodology/approachAn empirical model has been developed to govern crucial influencing parameters, namely, rotation speed (RS), tool transverse speed (TS), number of passes (NPS) and reinforcement fraction (RF) or weight percentage. Box Behnken design (BBD) with four input parameters and three levels of each parameter was used to design the experimental work, and analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to check the acceptability of the developed model. Desirability function analysis (DFA) for a multiresponse optimization approach is integrated with response surface methodology (RSM). The individual desirability index (IDI) was calculated for each response, and a composite desirability index (CDI) was obtained. The optimal parametric settings were determined based on maximum CDI values. A confirmation test is also performed to compare the actual and predicted values of responses.FindingsThe relationship between input parameters and output responses (UTS, YS, and EL) was investigated using the Box-Behnken design (BBD). Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) and nano-sized titanium dioxide (TiO2) enhanced the ultimate tensile strength and yield strength. It was observed that the inclusion of AgNPs led to an increase in ductility, while the increase in the weight fraction of TiO2 resulted in a decrease in ductility.Practical implicationsAZ91D/AgNPs/TiO2 hybrid composite finds enormous applications in biomedical implants, aerospace, sports and aerospace industries, especially where lightweight materials with high strength are critical.Originality/valueIn terms of optimum value through desirability, the experimental trials yield the following results: maximum value of UTS (318.369 MPa), maximum value of YS (200.120 MPa) and EL (7.610) at 1,021 rpm of RS, 70 mm/min of TS, 4 NPS and level 3 of RF.

Maximizing Corrosion Resistance of HA+Ce Coated Mg Implants Using Random Forest and Whale Optimization Algorithm

In this paper, a hybrid three-stage methodology based on in vitro experiments, simulations, and metaheuristic optimization is presented to enhance the corrosion resistance of hydroxyapatite (HA)-coated magnesium implants in biomedical applications. In the first stage, we add cerium (Ce) to HA and present a new coating (named HA+Ce) to improve the resistance of the coating to corrosion. Then, various HA+Ce compounds with different factors (e.g., concentration, pH, immersion time, and temperature) are generated and their propensity for corrosion is examined in a physiological environment using EIS and DC polarization tests in a simulated body fluid solution. Eventually, a comprehensive dataset comprising 1024 HA+Ce coating samples is collected. In the second stage, machine learning using random forest (RF) is used to learn the relation between the input factors of the coating and its corrosion resistance. In the third stage, a metaheuristic algorithm based on the whale optimization algorithm (WOA) is utilized to find the best HA+Ce compound with the maximum corrosion resistance, while the objective function of WOA for a new unseen coating solution is estimated using the trained RF model. Finally, the morphology and composition of the best coating solution are inspected using FE-SEM. According to the obtained results, the HA+Ce coating with an immersion time of 60 min, concentrations of 0.9 for Ce and 1.2 for HA, pH of 4.1 for solution, and temperature of 70 °C demonstrated the highest level of corrosion resistance among all experiments and simulations. The final optimized HA+Ce coating solution has obtained a corrosion resistance of 14,050 Ω·cm2, which resulted in a gain of 14.9% compared to the HA-coated Mg implants.

Silver Containing Antimicrobial Coatings on Innovative Ti-30Nb-5Mo β-Alloy Prepared by Micro-Arc Oxidation for Biomedical Implant Applications

Micro-arc oxidation (MAO) is a versatile surface-modification method that promotes higher wear and corrosion resistance, osseointegration, and biological activity to titanium alloys’ surfaces. This study aimed to modify the surface of a recently developed metastable β Ti alloy, which exhibits more favorable mechanical properties for implant applications compared to some commercial Ti alloys, by incorporating Ag into the coatings to introduce a bactericidal function to the surface. The Ti-30Nb-5Mo alloy, with lower elastic modulus, was treated by the MAO method using electrolyte solutions containing calcium acetate, magnesium acetate, β-glycerol phosphate, and varied concentrations of silver nitrate (1.5 mM, 2.5 mM, and 3.5 mM). With an increase in the concentration of silver ions in the electrolyte, the galvanostatic period during the MAO process decreased from 1.7 s to 0.5 s. The Ca/P ratio increased from 0.72 up to 1.36. X-ray diffraction showed that the MAO coatings were formed by rutile and anatase TiO2 main phases and calcium phosphates. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis detected the presence of amorphous Nb2O5, CaCO3, and MgCO3, and metallic and oxide forms of Ag. The increase in Ag in the electrolyte decreased the coating thickness (from 14.2 μm down to 10.0 μm), increased the contact angle (from 37.6° up to 57.4°), and slightly increased roughness (from 0.64 μm up to 0.79 μm). The maximum inhibition of Enterococcus faecalis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Candida albicans strains growth was of 43%, 43%, and 61%, respectively. The Ag did not negatively affect the differentiation of adipose-tissue-derived mesenchymal stem cells. Therefore, the treatment of the surface of the innovative Ti-30Nb-5Mo alloy by the MAO method was effective in producing a noncytotoxic porous coating with bactericidal properties and improved osseointegration capabilities.

Self-Assembled Multilayered Coatings with Multiple Cyclic Self-Healing Capability, Bacteria Killing, Osteogenesis, and Angiogenesis Properties on Magnesium Alloys.

Self-healing coatings improve the durability of magnesium (Mg) implants, but rapid corrosion still poses a challenge in the healing stage. Moreover, Mg-based materials with acceptable bacteria killing, osteogenic and angiogenic properties are challenging in biomedical applications. Herein, the self-healing polymeric coatings are fabricated on Mg alloys using the spin-assisted layer-by-layer (SLbL) assembly of hyaluronic acid (HA) and branched polyethyleneimine (bPEI) followed by chemical crosslinking treatment. The self-healing coatings show excellent adhesion strength and structure stability. The corrosion resistance is improved due to the physical barrier of polymer coatings, which also promotes the formation of hydroxyapatite (HAp) during degradation for further protection of Mg substrate. Owing to the dynamic reversible hydrogen bonds existing between HA and bPEI, the crosslinked multilayered coatings possess fast, substantial, and cyclic self-healing capabilities leading to restoration of the original structure and functions. Invitro investigations reveal that the self-healing coatings have multiple functionalities pertaining to bacteria killing, cytocompatibility, osteogenesis, as well as angiogenesis. In addition, the self-healing coatings stimulate alkaline phosphatase activity (ALP), extracellular matrix (ECM) mineralization, and the expression of osteogenesis-related genes of mBMSCs and HUVECs. This study reveals a feasible strategy to design and prepare versatile self-healing coatings on Mg implants for biomedical applications.

Improving biocompatibility and corrosion resistance of titanium alloy implants with bredigite-graphene oxide nanocomposite coatings

Despite the significant properties of titanium and its alloys as implants for biomedical applications, the lack of proper osseointegration with human tissues, as well as the release of unfavorable ions, has prompted the development of various surface modifications and coatings. The aim of this study was to prepare nanocomposite coatings of bredigite-graphene oxide (GO) on a Ti6Al4V alloy substrate and investigate the influence of bredigite concentration on the physical, chemical, and biological properties of the coatings. To achieve this, bredigite nanopowder was synthesized using the combustion sol–gel method. Subsequently, a nanocomposite coating consisting of bredigite-graphene oxide with varying bredigite concentrations (4, 8, and 12%wt.) was prepared using a simple dip-coating method on Ti6Al4V. The results demonstrated that increasing the bredigite concentration to 8% wt. resulted in the formation of a uniform and dense coating. Corrosion tests also confirmed the improved corrosion resistance of the bredigite-GO coatings compared to the uncoated substrate. Additionally, the incorporation of bredigite nanopowder at 8%wt. significantly enhanced the hydrophilicity of the substrates, leading to improvement in vitro bioactivity and biocompatibility of the coatings. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that the bredigite-GO nanocomposite coating holds promise as a bioactive and anticorrosion coating for biomedical applications.

Micro-arc oxidation (MAO) and its potential for improving the performance of titanium implants in biomedical applications.

Titanium (Ti) and its alloys have good biocompatibility, mechanical properties and corrosion resistance, making them attractive for biomedical applications. However, their biological inertness and lack of antimicrobial properties may compromise the success of implants. In this review, the potential of micro-arc oxidation (MAO) technology to create bioactive coatings on Ti implants is discussed. The review covers the following aspects: 1) different factors, such as electrolyte, voltage and current, affect the properties of MAO coatings; 2) MAO coatings affect biocompatibility, including cytocompatibility, hemocompatibility, angiogenic activity, corrosion resistance, osteogenic activity and osseointegration; 3) antibacterial properties can be achieved by adding copper (Cu), silver (Ag), zinc (Zn) and other elements to achieve antimicrobial properties; and 4) MAO can be combined with other physical and chemical techniques to enhance the performance of MAO coatings. It is concluded that MAO coatings offer new opportunities for improving the use of Ti and its alloys in biomedical applications, and some suggestions for future research are provided.

Incorporation of Ca, P, Mg, and Zn Elements in Ti-30Nb-5Mo Alloy by Micro-Arc Oxidation for Biomedical Implant Applications: Surface Characterization, Cellular Growth, and Microorganisms’ Activity

Micro-arc oxidation (MAO) is a surface modification technique used to improve the surface properties of titanium alloys, such as corrosion, wear resistance, and osseointegration. In addition to promoting the growth of a porous oxide coating on the sample’s surface, it is also possible to incorporate bioactive elements into this coating, such as calcium, phosphorus, and magnesium, as well as elements with antimicrobial action, such as zinc. Thus, this study aimed at the surface modification of the β Ti-30Nb-5Mo alloy by the MAO method, incorporating calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, and zinc to improve osseointegration and promote bactericidal character in the produced coating. The results showed that the porosity, roughness, and crystallinity of the coating tend to increase with increasing Zn concentration in the electrolyte, while the contact angle decreases. The antimicrobial activity was promoted against the E. faecalis and P. aeruginosa bacteria strains and the C. albicans fungus. Incorporating Zn on the surface also did not negatively affect adiposetissue-derived mesenchymal stem cell differentiation, and promoted more significant growth of these cells on the samples’ surface.

Microstructure, Mechanical Properties, In Vitro Biodegradability, and Biocompatibility of Mg-Zn/HA Composites for Biomedical Implant Applications.

Recently, Mg-Zn/hydroxyapatite (HA) composites have attracted much attention as potential candidates for use in bone implants. In this paper, the MgZn/HA composites were prepared using powder metallurgy (PM) and the merging mechanism of MgZn and HA particles was investigated by adjusting the weight ratio of the HA powder. The evolution of the HA distribution in the matrix was examined using SEM and micro-CT images. Afterward, the mechanical properties and biocompatibility of the composites were discussed in detail. The results revealed that the mechanical properties and biocompatibility of the Mg-Zn/HA composites were significantly affected by the HA content. Composites with a low HA content showed increased porosity, improved mechanical strength, and enhanced corrosion resistance after ball milling and cold pressing. These results underscore the importance of optimizing the HA content in Mg-Zn/HA composites for bone implants. Based on our findings, PM Mg-Zn/HA composites with a moderate HA content demonstrate the most promising characteristics as bone implants. The insights gained from this work contribute to the advancement of bone implant materials and hold great potential for enhancing orthopedic surgery outcomes.

A sub 1 GHz ultra miniaturized folded dipole patch antenna for biomedical applications

A miniaturized folded dipole patch antenna (FDPA) design for biomedical applications operating at sub 1 GHz (434 MHz) band is presented. Antenna is fabricated on FR-4 substrate material having dimensions of 16.40 mm times 8.60 mm times 1.52 mm (0.023lambdatimes 0.012lambdatimes 0.002lambda). Indirect feed coupling is applied through two parallel strips at bottom layer of the substrate. The antenna size is reduced by 83% through lumped inductor placed at the center path of the radiating FDPA, suitable for biomedical (implantable) applications and hyperthermia. Moreover, Impedance matching is achieved without using any Balun transformer or any other complex matching network. The proposed antenna provides an impedance bandwidth of 6 MHz (431–437 MHz) below − 10 dB and a gain of − 31 dB at 434 MHz. The designed antenna is also placed on a human body model to evaluate its performance for hyperthermia through Specific Absorption Rate (SAR), Effective Field Size (EFS), and penetration depth (PD).

A novel wideband fractal‐shaped MIMO antenna for brain and skin implantable biomedical applications

SummaryA novel fractal‐shaped wideband multiple‐input multiple‐output (MIMO) antenna is proposed for brain and skin implantable applications. This antenna works in the 2.4–2.48 GHz band of industrial, scientific, and medical (ISM) standards. The fractal‐shaped wideband MIMO antenna is miniature in size with a footprint of . Rogers RT/Duroid 6010 high‐dielectric substrate material is used to fabricate the optimized design in order to validate the implantable MIMO antenna structure. The same high‐permittivity substrate material has been used as a superstrate. Experiments were carried out in brain and skin‐mimicking gel at 2.45 GHz in the ISM band. The proposed antenna has a peak gain of −21.3 dBi at 2.45 GHz. High isolation (>20 dB) between two MIMO ports is attained. The proposed antenna achieves a fractional bandwidth of 36.76% and an impedance bandwidth of 1.02 GHz. According to IEEE safety regulations for 1‐ and 10‐g tissues, the computed maximum specific absorption rate (SAR) is safe bound.

AZ63/Ti/Zr Nanocomposite for Bone-Related Biomedical Applications.

Considering the unique properties of magnesium and its alloy, it has a vast demand in biomedical applications, particularly the implant material in tissue engineering due to its biodegradability. But the fixing spares must hold such implants till the end of the biodegradation of implant material. The composite technology will offer the added benefits of altering the material properties to match the requirements of the desired applications. Hence, this experimental investigation is aimed at developing a composite material for manufacturing fixing spares like a screw for implants in biomedical applications. The matrix of AZ63 magnesium alloy is reinforced with nanoparticles of zirconium (Zr) and titanium (Ti) through the stir casting-type synthesis method. The samples were prepared with equal contributions of zirconium (Zr) and titanium (Ti) nanoparticles in the total reinforcement percentage (3%, 6%, 9%, and 12%). The corrosive and tribological studies were done. In the corrosive study, the process parameters like NaCl concentration, pH value, and exposure time were varied at three levels. In the wear study, the applied Load, speed of sliding, and the distance of the slide were considered at four levels. Taguchi analysis was employed in this investigation to optimize the reinforcement and independent factors to minimize the wear and corrosive losses. The minimum wear rate was achieved in the 12% reinforced sample with the input factor levels of 60 N of load on the pin, 1 m/s of disc speed at a sliding distance was 1500 m, and the 12% reinforce samples also recorded a minimum corrosive rate of 0.0076 mm/year at the operating environment of 5% NaCl-concentrated solution with the pH value of 9 for 24 hrs of exposure. The prediction model was developed based on the experimental results.

Double Substituted with Manganese and Strontium Tricalcium Phosphate Coatings on Zinc-Lithium Biodegradable Alloys for Biomedical Implant Applications

To address the clinical needs for biodegradable implant materials, in this work, zinc-lithium (Zn-Li) biodegradable alloy was coated with double-doped manganese and strontium resorbable tricalcium phosphate (Mn,Sr-TCP). The Pulsed Laser Deposition method was applied for coating preparation. For coating characterization, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy, X-ray Diffraction, Scanning Electron Microscopy coupled with Energy Dispersive X-ray, and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy were used. The microbiology experiments were performed, testing the inhibition of growth of Gram-positive (Staphylococcus aureus, Enterococcus faecalis) and Gram-negative (Salmonella typhimurium, Escherichia coli) bacteria strains and Candida albicans fungus. The obtained results evidenced about 10% of inhibition of all four bacteria strains by the Mn,Sr-TCP-coated Zn-Li samples, exerting the most pronounced effect on C. albicans fungus (about 50% of inhibition of growth). The prepared coatings can be useful for improving the degradation behavior and biological characteristics of Zn-Li alloys.
