Visual Outcomes and Patient Satisfaction of Trifocal or Trifocal Toric IOLs in Chinese Cataract Patients: Focus on Near Vision at 33 cm.

To examine the visual outcomes, particularly at 33 cm, and assess patient satisfaction following the implantation of a diffractive trifocal intraocular lens (IOL) and its toric variant. This prospective single-arm observational study involved 45 Chinese patients (90 eyes) underwent bilateral cataract surgery and PanOptix or PanOptix toric intraocular lenses (IOLs) implantation. Postoperatively, visual acuity was evaluated at various distances, including 40 cm and 33 cm, for both monocular and binocular outcomes. Patient satisfaction was evaluated using the VF-14 questionnaire. 72 eyes underwent PanOptix IOLs implantation, and 18 eyes received PanOptix toric IOLs. At 3-month postoperative mark, the mean monocular UDVA, UIVA, and UNVA at 40 cm and 33 cm were -0.02±0.09, 0.00±0.07, 0.02±0.07, and 0.07±0.14 logMAR, respectively, with proportions of visual acuity exceeding 0.1 logMAR were 96.7%, 96.7%, 94.4%, and 74.4%, respectively. The mean binocular UDVA, UIVA, and UNVA at 40 cm and 33 cm were -0.05±0.06, -0.03±0.05, 0.00±0.05, and 0.04±0.07 logMAR, respectively, with proportions of visual acuity exceeding 0.1 logMAR were 97.8%, 100.0%, 100.0%, and 91.1%, respectively. When the near point shifted from 40cm to 33cm, some patients showed a decline for UDVA, but the average reduction was less than one line. The overall VF-14 questionnaire score was 4.02±4.19. PanOptix can provide Chinese patients with a full range of satisfying visual acuity, near to 33cm. Though the visual acuity of some patients at 33 cm did not match the level at 40 cm, the gap of one line may not carry clinical significant.

Comparison of short-term clinical outcomes of a diffractive trifocal intraocular lens with phacoemulsification and femtosecond laser assisted cataract surgery

PurposeTo evaluate short-term visual and refractive outcomes after implantation of a diffractive trifocal intraocular lens (IOL) in cataract patients with phacoemulsification (PHACO) and femtosecond laser assisted cataract surgery (FLACS).SettingDepartment of Ophthalmology, Shanghai Aier Eye Hospital, China.DesignA retrospective, observational study.MethodsPatients who underwent cataract surgery combined with Acrysoft IQ PanOptix trifocal IOL implantation were enrolled and divided into three groups: PHACO group, LAstig-FLACS group (astigmatism less then 1D) and HAstig-FLACS group (astigmatism more than 1D). Logarithm of the minimum angle of resolution (logMAR) visual acuity of uncorrected distance (UDVA), intermediate (UIVA), near visual (UNVA), defocus curve, surgically induced astigmatism (SIA) were evaluated in 1 months postoperatively and wavefront aberrations were evaluated in 6 months.Results101 eyes of 60 patients were included with 31 eyes in PHACO group, 45 eyes in LAstig-FLACS group and 25 eyes in HAstig-FLACS group. Significant difference was found of internal Strehl Ratio (SR) between PHACO and LAstig-FLACS group (P = 0.026). In PHACO group, 79.31%, 86.21%, 72.41% of eyes gain visual acuity LogMAR 0.1 or more in UDVA, UIVA and UNVA, while 83.72%, 93.02%, 93.02% of those in LAstig-FLACS group and 92.00%, 84.00%, 76.00% in HAstig-FLACS group.ConclusionsPanoptix diffractive trifocal IOL provides satisfied visual outcome in no matter FLACS or PHACO. Besides, trifocal IOL implantation via FLACS can provide a better accumulative visual acuity outcome at all distance than PHACO in 1 month. Femtosecond laser assisted limbal relaxing incisions (FLLRIs) is an excellent way to reduce a patient’s corneal astigmatism.

Visual Outcomes According to Age After Bilateral Implantation of Trifocal Intraocular Lenses.

To investigate the effect of age on visual outcomes after the bilateral implantation of trifocal intraocular lenses (IOLs). A total of 290 patients (580 eyes) who underwent bilateral implantation of a trifocal IOL were enrolled in this retrospective case-control study. Patients were divided into five age groups: 45 to 49, 50 to 54, 55 to 59, 60 to 64, and 65 years and older. Postoperative monocular uncorrected and corrected distance visual acuity (UDVA and CDVA, respectively), uncorrected near visual acuity (UNVA), binocular distance-corrected defocus curve, spectacle dependence for near and distance vision, and patient satisfaction scores were compared among the five groups. The 45 to 49 years group had significantly better mean UDVA (0.02 ± 0.05 logMAR) and UNVA (0.02 ± 0.04 logMAR) than the 65 years and older group (0.06 ± 0.09 and 0.09 ± 0.09 logMAR; P = .029 and P < .001; respectively). However, no significant differences were observed in the mean CDVA among the groups. Binocular visual performance of the 45 to 49 years group was better than that of the 65 years and older age group at defocuses of +1.00, +0.50, -1.00, and -3.00 D. No significant differences were observed in spectacle dependence for near and distance vision or in patient satisfaction scores among the five groups. Bilateral implantation of trifocal IOLs can provide excellent near and distance vision in both young and older patients. However, UDVA and UNVA revealed considerably worse results in the older group, although no significant difference was observed in CDVA and postoperative refractive errors by age. Phacoemulsification with implantation of a trifocal intraocular lens in eyes with asteroid hyalosis and synchysis scintillans

To compare the visual outcomes in both eyes of patients who undergo phacoemulsification and trifocal intraocular lens (IOL) implantation and have asteroid hyalosis (AH) or synchysis scintillans (SS) in only one eye. A retrospective comparative case series was performed. We evaluated uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA), corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA), uncorrected intermediate visual acuity (UIVA), uncorrected near visual acuity (UNVA), predictability, safety, efficacy, and satisfaction after implantation of the same model of trifocal IOL in both eyes (PhysIOL FineVision Pod-F and Micro-F and Rayner RayOne Trifocal). A total of 164 eyes of 82 patients (41 females, 50%) met the inclusion criteria. There were no statistically significant differences in sphere, cylinder, spherical equivalent, UDVA, UIVA, or UNVA between the groups. Postoperative CDVA was slightly better in the control group (logMAR 0.03) than in the AH/SS group (logMAR 0.04) (P: 0.014). There were no statistically significant differences in predictability, safety index, or efficacy index between the groups. Overall subjective satisfaction was good (98.2%). Visual outcomes and satisfaction are good after implantation of trifocal IOLs in eyes with AH or SS. Therefore, trifocal IOLs should not be ruled out in these patients when no other vitreoretinal disorder is present.

Bilateral Femtosecond Laser-Assisted Clear Lens Extraction with Trifocal Intraocular Lens Implantation for Presbyopia Correction: A Short-Term Observational Study in Chinese Adults.

To observe the outcome of bilateral femtosecond laser-assisted clear lens extraction with trifocal intraocular lens (IOL) implantation for presbyopia correction and evaluate its feasibility in early presbyopic adults. Prospective case series of eyes with clear crystalline lenses that underwent femtosecond laser-assisted lens extraction and trifocal IOL (Acrysof IQ PanOptix, Model TFNT00, Alcon) implantation between 2021 and 2023 were followed up for at least 3 months after surgery. Outcome measures included monocular uncorrected visual acuity at near (UNVA, 40 cm), intermediate (UIVA, 60 cm), and distance (UDVA, 5 m), monocular manifest refraction, corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA), defocus curve assessment, and spectacle independence at both near and distance. A total of 60 eyes from 30 consecutive patients were included, and their mean age was 50.4±6.5 years. After surgery, the mean UNVA (LogMAR) increased from 0.28±0.16 to 0.08±0.07, UIVA increased from 0.25±0.12 to 0.09±0.06, and UDVA increased from 0.27±0.21 to 0.01±0.08. The enhancements of UNVA, UIVA and UDVA were all significant (P < 0.05). The optometric results showed that the mean postoperative spherical equivalent (SE) was -0.21±0.24 D, and the mean postoperative CDVA (LogMAR) was -0.00±0.06. The preoperative spectacle independences at near and distance were 46.7% (14/30) and 56.7% (17/30), respectively, and both increased to 100% at 3 months after surgery. Satisfactory visual outcomes and safe surgical procedures were observed in this study, which demonstrate that bilateral femtosecond laser-assisted clear lens extraction with PanOptix IOL implantation could be a feasible approach for presbyopia correction in working-age Chinese patients.

Trifocal versus monofocal intraocular lens implantation in eyes previously treated with laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) for myopia.

To assess visual and refractive outcomes of trifocal intraocular lens (IOL) implantation in eyes that had previously undergone laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) for myopia and to compare them with those recorded after implantation of a monofocal IOL. Retrospective comparative cases series. This study evaluated uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA), corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA), uncorrected near visual acuity (UNVA), safety, and efficacy after the implantation of two comparable trifocal IOL models and one monofocal IOL model in patients who had previously undergone myopic LASIK. Patients were classified according to the implanted IOL (monofocal or trifocal). A total of 211 eyes from 170 patients received a monofocal IOL, and 211 eyes from 161 patients received a trifocal IOL. At the end of the study, after lensectomy, there was a higher myopic residual spherical equivalent in the monofocal group because some eyes had been targeted for slight myopia to achieve monovision; therefore, UDVA was better in the trifocal group. CDVA was comparable in both groups. As expected, both monocular and binocular UNVA were significantly better in the trifocal group. Although the percentage of eyes that lost ≥1 line of CDVA did not differ between the groups, the safety index was slightly better in the monofocal group. Although implantation of monofocal and trifocal IOLs after myopic LASIK yielded excellent distance visual outcomes, UNVA was significantly better for the trifocal IOL, with a minimally worse safety profile. Trifocal IOLs can be considered after previous LASIK for myopia, with an appropriate patient selection.

Comparison of dynamic visual acuity after implantation of toric bifocal or trifocal intraocular lens in age-related cataract patients: a randomized controlled trial.

To investigate the dynamic visual acuity (DVA) after implantation of toric bifocal or trifocal intraocular lens in age-related cataract patients. This was a prospective randomized controlled trial. Of one hundred and twenty-four patients enrolled and randomized to receive unilateral phacoemulsification and toric trifocal (939 M/MP, Carl Zeiss Meditec AG, Jena, Germany) or toric bifocal (909 M, Carl Zeiss Meditec AG, Jena, Germany) intraocular lenses (IOL) implantation, ninety-nine patients completed the follow-up and were included in final analysis. Postoperatively, uncorrected and corrected distance (UDVA and CDVA), intermediate (UIVA and DCIVA) and near (UNVA and DCNVA) static visual acuity, manifest refraction and uncorrected and corrected distance DVA (UDDVA and CDDVA) at 20, 40 and 80 degrees per second (dps) were evaluated at one week, one month and three months. Three months postoperatively, the UDVA were 0.13 ± 0.11 and 0.14 ± 0.13 in the toric trifocal and bifocal IOL group, respectively. Significant better UIVA (trifocal, 0.17 ± 0.13 vs. bifocal, 0.23 ± 0.13, p = 0.037) and DCIVA (trifocal, 0.16 ± 0.11 vs. bifocal, 0.20 ± 0.12, p = 0.048) were observed in patients implanting toric trifocal than bifocal IOL at three months postoperatively. Patients implanted with toric bifocal IOL obtained better CDDVA at 80 dps (0.5607 ± 0.2032) than the trifocal group (0.6573 ± 0.2450, p = 0.039) at three months. Postoperative UDDVA and CDDVA at 20, 40 and 80 dps were significantly associated with age (p < 0.05, respectively) and postoperative static visual acuity (p < 0.05, respectively). Toric trifocal IOL provides better static intermediate visual acuity, and toric bifocal IOL implantation provides better distance dynamic visual acuity at high speed.

Comparison of Patients With Emmetropia and Presbyopia and Different Accommodation Who Undergo Unilateral or Bilateral Implantation of a Trifocal IOL

Purpose: To compare visual outcomes and satisfaction in patients with emmetropia, presbyopia, and greater or lesser residual accommodation who undergo unilateral or bilateral implantation of a trifocal diffractive intraocular lens (IOL). Methods: A multicenter, multisurgeon study was performed to evaluate outcomes in patients with emmetropia and presbyopia who underwent refractive lens exchange followed by implantation of a FineVision trifocal IOL (PhysIOL). The inclusion criteria were as follows: emmetropia, sphere −0.25 to +0.50 diopters (D), cylinder less than 0.75 D, and manifest refractive spherical equivalent (MRSE) of −0.25 to +0.25 D. All patients also had to have an uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA) of Snellen 0.9 or better in each eye. The sample was divided into different clusters based on two variables: eyes operated on (monocular or binocular) and age either younger than 55 years or 55 years or older. Thus, four possible groups were created. Visual and refractive performance, patient satisfaction, and spectacle independence were assessed. Results: A total of 690 eyes from 431 patients were evaluated. There was no difference in postoperative uncorrected (UDVA) and corrected (CDVA) distance visual acuity between the groups. Binocular uncorrected near vision (UNVA) was better in patients who underwent surgery on both eyes regardless of age (median [interquartile range]: 0.00 [0.00; 0.10] vs 0.10 [0.00; 0.10] logMAR; P &lt; .001). Binocular uncorrected intermediate vision (UIVA) was better in patients who underwent surgery on both eyes aged younger than 55 years than in those who underwent surgery in one eye aged 55 years or older (median [interquartile range]: 0.18 [0.10; 0.18] vs 0.30 [0.18; 0.30] logMAR; P &lt; .001). The efficacy and safety indexes were 0.98 ± 0.09 and 1.01 ± 0.06, respectively. A total of 93.3% of eyes were within the 0.50 D range in postoperative MRSE. Visual dysphotopsia was worse in patients with both eyes operated on, although the differences were not statistically significant. Conclusions: The study shows that after refractive lens exchange, patients with emmetropia and presbyopia who received a trifocal IOL in one or both eyes achieved good UNVA, UIVA, and UDVA. Regarding near binocular visual acuity, results were better for patients who underwent surgery on both eyes than for those who underwent surgery on one eye. Regarding binocular intermediate visual acuity, patients aged younger than 55 years with both lenses replaced had better results than those 55 years or older with only one lens replaced. The Role of Early Nd:YAG Laser Capsulotomy in Improving Visual Performance in Mild to Moderately Symptomatic Trifocal Patients.

To determine the effect of early Nd:YAG (neodymium:yttrium-aluminum-garnet) laser capsulotomy on objective and subjective visual quality in symptomatic trifocal intraocular lens (IOL) patients. A single-center, prospective study examined symptomatic patients after bilateral cataract extraction with trifocal IOL implantation. A ten-question survey was conducted one month after surgery. Study endpoints included the assessment of monocular and binocular uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA), uncorrected near visual acuity (UNVA), contrast sensitivity (CS), and subjective visual quality before and after Nd:YAG capsulotomy prior to 4 months after cataract surgery. A total of 38 eyes from 21 patients were included with a TFAT00 (n = 23) or TFAT30-60 (n = 15). Overall satisfaction with the IOL was 8.55 ± 1.77 (range 5-10). A Nd:YAG capsulotomy was performed at 55 ± 26 days. Monocular UDVA and UNVA > 20/25 before Nd:YAG were 53.0% and 42.0%, which improved post-Nd:YAG to 63.0% and 66.0%, respectively (P = 0.41, P = 0.051). Binocular UDVA and UNVA >20/25 before Nd:YAG were 82.0% and 63.0%, which increased to 97% and 97%, respectively (P < 0.05, P < 0.001). CS increased in all post-Nd:YAG capsulotomies (P < 0.01). The presence of glare was documented at 74% pre-Nd:YAG, which decreased to 41% post-Nd:YAG (P < 0.01). Glare which limited activities was documented at 24%, which decreased to 5% post-Nd:YAG (P = 0.21). Early treatment of posterior capsule opacities in mild to moderately dissatisfied trifocal IOL patients may be beneficial in improving CS, visual quality, and reducing the presence and severity of dysphotopsias.

Clinical Performance of a New Trifocal IOL with a 7.0 mm Optical Zone.

To evaluate the refractive and visual outcomes following cataract surgery and implantation of a diffractive trifocal intraocular lens (IOL) with a 7.0 mm optical zone. A total of 23 patients who underwent bilateral implantation with the Triva-aXAY IOL were analyzed at 6 months post-surgery. The main outcome measures were refractive error, monocular and binocular uncorrected and corrected-distance visual acuity (UDVA, CDVA), uncorrected and corrected-distance intermediate visual acuity (UIVA, CDIVA) at 60 cm, uncorrected and corrected-distance near visual acuity (UNVA, CDNVA) at 40 cm, and binocular defocus curve. Patients also completed the Catquest-9SF questionnaire. All eyes were within ±1.00D, and 91.30% of eyes within ±0.50D, with a mean postoperative spherical equivalent of -0.14±0.29D. Similarly, 95.65% of patients showed a binocular UDVA ≥20/25, compared to 100% for CDVA, and the mean binocular UDVA and CDVA were 0.02±0.06 and 0.00±0.05 logMAR, respectively. At intermediate vision, 65.22% of patients showed a binocular UIVA ≥20/25, compared to 86.96% for CDIVA, and the mean binocular UIVA and CDIVA were 0.07±0.06 and 0.06±0.06 logMAR, respectively. At near, 95.65% of patients showed a binocular UNVA and CDNVA ≥20/25, with a mean binocular UDNVA and CDNVA of 0.04±0.07 and 0.02±0.05 logMAR, respectively. Finally, 95.65% of patients reported being quite satisfied to very satisfied with their vision and about 74% did not report any difficulty with their vision in their everyday life. Between 65.22% and 100% of patients reported no difficulty performing different tasks. Our study shows good visual and refractive outcomes with high satisfaction in patients implanted with the Triva-aXAY IOL with a 7.0 mm optical zone.

Comparison of astigmatism correction and visual outcomes in mix-and-match implantations of trifocal intraocular lenses with femtosecond laser-assisted arcuate keratotomy and contralateral bifocal Toric intraocular lenses.

Astigmatism reduces the postoperative visual performance after non-toric intraocular lenses (IOLs) implantation, and limits the use of refractive IOLs in cataract surgery. The purpose of this study was to compare the efficacy in astigmatism correction and the postoperative visual outcomes between the implantation of a trifocal IOL with femtosecond laser-assisted arcuate keratotomy (FSAK) in one eye and a bifocal toric IOL (TIOL) in the other, in patients with cataract and moderate astigmatism. This prospective observational paired-eye study enrolled patients with cataract and corneal astigmatism (CA) between 0.75 and 2.25 D in both eyes. The patients underwent a mix-and-match treatment comprising trifocal IOL implantation with FSAK and bifocal TIOL implantation. We compared the visual acuity (VA) at all distances, defocus curve, postoperative refractive astigmatism (RfA), CA, high-order aberrations, modulation transfer function (MTF) curve, and Strehl ratio between the two eye groups. In total, 41 patients (82 eyes) were enrolled and completed a 6-month follow-up. The 1- and 3-month uncorrected distance VA and 3-month uncorrected near VA were greater in eyes with bifocal TIOLs than with trifocal IOLs and FSAK (p = 0.036, 0.010, and 0.030, respectively), whereas the latter had greater uncorrected intermediate VA at every visit and greater VA in the intermediate range of defocus curve (at -1.50 and - 2.00 D) than the eyes with bifocal TIOLs. The postoperative RA of the eyes with trifocal IOL and FSAK was significantly higher than that of the bifocal TIOL-implanted eyes at the 3- and 6-month follow-ups. Both FSAK and TIOL implantation effectively reduce pre-existing moderate astigmatism in patients with cataract. The eyes with bifocal TIOLs had more stable long-term astigmatism correction, whereas those with trifocal IOLs and FSAK had better intermediate VA. Therefore, a mix-and-match implantation of trifocal IOL with FSAK and contralateral bifocal TIOL could achieve effective astigmatism correction and provide an overall optimal VA.

Randomised placebo-controlled clinical trial evaluating the impact of a new visual rehabilitation program on neuroadaptation in patients implanted with trifocal intraocular lenses

PurposeTo evaluate the efficacy of a new visual training program for improving the visual function in patients implanted with trifocal intraocular lenses (IOLs).MethodsRandomised placebo-controlled clinical trial enrolling 60 subjects (age, 47–75 years) undergoing cataract surgery with implantation of trifocal diffractive IOL. Home-based active visual training was prescribed immediately after surgery to all of them (20 sessions, 30 min): 31 subjects using a serious game based on Gabor patches (study group) and 29 using a placebo software (placebo group). Visual acuity, contrast sensitivity (CS), and perception of visual disturbances (QoV questionnaire) were evaluated before and after training. Likewise, in a small subgroup, resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) analysis was performed.ResultsNo significant differences were found between groups in compliance time (p = 0.70). After training, only significant improvements in monocular uncorrected intermediate visual acuity were found in the study group (p ≤ 0.01), although differences between groups did not reach statistical significance (p ≥ 0.11). Likewise, significantly better binocular far CS values were found in the study group for the spatial frequencies of 6 (p = 0.01) and 12 cpd (p = 0.03). More visual symptoms of the QoV questionnaire experienced a significant change in the level of bothersomeness in the study group. Rs-fMRI revealed the presence significant changes reflecting higher functional connectivity after the training with the serious game.ConclusionsA 3-week visual training program based on the use of Gabor patches after bilateral implantation of trifocal diffractive IOLs may be beneficial for optimising the visual function, with neural changes associated suggesting an acceleration of neuroadaptation.Trial registration ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT04985097. Effect of postoperative residual astigmatism on visual outcomes after trifocal intraocular lens implantation.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of residual astigmatism on postoperative visual outcomes after trifocal intraocular lens implantation. In this prospective observational study, we divided 156 eyes into two groups according to postoperative astigmatism measured by subjective optometry and followed them up for 3 months. Visual acuity, modulation transfer function (MTF) curves, Strehl ratio (SR), Visual Function Index-14 scores, and photic phenomena were compared. Linear regression analysis revealed a weak correlation between residual astigmatism and uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA) (r = 0.190, P = 0.016) at 3 months and a significant between-group difference at 1- and 3-month postoperative UDVA (P = 0.038, P = 0.018, respectively). MTF curve values and SR (MTF-10 total, MTF-10 cornea, MTF-30 total, MTF-30 cornea, SR Total, and SR cornea) were significantly worse (P < 0.001), and the Visual Function Index-14 scores were lower in the 0.5 < astigmatism ≤ 1.25 D group (P < 0.05) than in the astigmatism ≤ 0.5 D group. No significant differences were found in the frequency, severity, and bothersomeness of photic phenomena (P > 0.05). Postoperative residual astigmatism affects the UDVA of the trifocal intraocular lens-implanted eyes. Although we found no significant differences in uncorrected intermediate and near visual acuity, both objective and subjective visual quality were affected, suggesting the need for surgical planning when the anticipated postoperative astigmatism is >0.5 D.

The Impact of Angle Lambda on Patient Satisfaction after Optiflex Trio Trifocal Intraocular Lens Implantation.

To evaluate the vision-related quality of life (QOL), visual acuities, and refractive outcomes of patients with different angle lambda (λ) after a trifocal intraocular lens (IOL) implantation at Veni Vidi Eye Hospital, İstanbul, Turkey. This retrospective, nonrandomized, and noncomparative case series included patients who had phacoemulsification bilaterally with the implantation of a trifocal IOL (Optiflex Trio) and responded to a vision-related QOL questionnaire measuring patient satisfaction. The patients were divided into two groups according to the angle λ with a cutoff value of 0.5 mm. Evaluations were conducted to examine the monocular visual acuities, spherical equivalents, corneal astigmatism measured 3 months after surgery, and outcomes of the QOL questionnaire in the two groups. The study examined 130 eyes from 65 patients aged from 41 to 78 years old. There were no statistically significant differences between the two groups at 3 months after surgery in terms of uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA), monocular uncorrected intermediate visual acuity (UIVA), monocular uncorrected near visual acuity (UNVA), spherical equivalent, and corneal astigmatism (P > 0.05). Patients with a greater angle λ had significantly more difficulty going out to see movies, plays, or sporting events (P=0.02), driving at night (P=0.002), and driving in difficult conditions (P < 0.001) than patients with a lower angle λ. The Optiflex Trio showed good results in terms of visual acuity at all distances, positive refractive outcomes, and high patient satisfaction in daily life according to the QOL questionnaire. An angle λ greater than 0.5 mm may potentially cause dysphotopsia symptoms, especially during nighttime activities.

Clinical and laboratory studies on the effects of capsular tension ring on surgical outcomes of trifocal intraocular lens implantation

To assess the influence of capsular tension ring (CTR) on surgical outcomes of trifocal intraocular lens (IOL) implantation in femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery. Sugita Eye Clinic, Tokyo, and University of Tsukuba, Ibaraki, Japan. Prospective, randomized, paired-eye clinical study and laboratory study. In the clinical study involving 44 eyes of 22 patients with no risk of zonular instability, 1 eye received IOL alone and the contralateral eye received IOL with CTR. Preoperative capsular bag diameter and postoperative IOL tilt/decentration were measured using anterior segment optical coherence tomography. In the laboratory study, IOL and CTR were implanted into an artificial capsular bag of 10 mm in diameter, and IOL centration was evaluated. Throughout the 12-month follow-up period, there was no significant difference in refractive and visual outcomes between groups. The amount of IOL decentration was significantly larger in eyes with CTR than in eyes without CTR at 12 months postoperatively (P = .037). There was a significant negative correlation between capsular bag diameter and the amount of IOL decentration in eyes with CTR (P = .038), but not in eyes without CTR (P = .873). The laboratory study indicated that interference between CTR eyelets and IOL haptics significantly increased IOL decentration (P < .001). The use of CTR did not affect refractive and visual outcomes of trifocal IOL implantation in eyes without the risk of zonular weakness. CTR coimplantation increased IOL decentration possibly due to the interference between CTR eyelets and IOL haptics.

Evaluation of Life Quality of Patients Submitted to Cataract Surgery with Implantation of Trifocal Intraocular Lenses.

This study aimed to evaluate the quality of life and the satisfaction level of Brazilian and Chinese patients who underwent cataract surgery for Acysof IQ PanOptix Model TFNT00 (Alcon Laboratories, Fort Worth, TX, USA) implantation. This retrospective study enrolled 51 patients from China and 51 patients from Brazil. At the 3-month follow-up, uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA) at 5 m, uncorrected intermediate visual acuity (UIVA) at 60 cm, and uncorrected near visual acuity (UNVA) at 40 cm were evaluated; Catquest 9SF and the Near Activity Visual Questionnaire (NAVQ) were administered to the patients. The results revealed that the Brazilian patients gained better UDVA and UNVA (p < 0.001), while the Chinese patients gained better UIVA (p = 0.001). With regards to the patients' overall satisfaction with their current vision, the Brazilian patients scored higher (p = 0.002). In situations related to distant and near vision, the Brazilian patients scored higher, while in situations related to intermediate vision, the Chinese patients scored higher. No differences were found between the gender or age subgroups, but the normal axial length (AL) subgroup showed the highest level of satisfaction (p = 0.002). The patients implanted with TFNT00 IOL obtained excellent objective and subjective outcomes in both cultures. The Brazilian patients showed higher satisfaction with their distant and near vision, while the Chinese patients were more satisfied with their intermediate vision.

Visual Outcomes With Intraocular Trifocal Lens Implant.

Cataract surgery has become one of the most common surgeries in the world with one in every four surgeries performed being a cataract extraction and the numbers are expected to increase by 16 percent in the USA alone by 2024 as compared to the current statistics. The aim of the study is to analyze the visual outcomes of intraocular lens implants for various visual ranges. This non-comparative interventional study was conducted at the Ophthalmology department of Al Ehsan Eye Hospital from Jan to Dec 2021. It included patients who underwent uneventful phacoemulsification with an intraocular lens implant and analysis of the visual outcomes for uncorrected distance (UDVA), uncorrected intermediate distance (UIVA), and uncorrected near distance (UNVA). Independent sample t-test was applied to observe the mean values of recorded far vision on the 1stday, 1 week, and 1 month after the trifocal intraocular lens implantation. It showed a significant difference with a p-value of 0.00 on 1st day, 1 week, and 1 month after was 0.3±0.1, 0.17±0.09, and 0.14±0.08 respectively. Mean improvement in near vision after 1 month was N6 with S.D 1.03 and in intermediate vision was N8±1.4 respectively. Trifocal Intraocular lens implantation offers an improved vision for near, intermediate, and distant visual ranges without the need for correction.
