Joint Beamforming Design in Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface-Assisted Rate Splitting Networks

Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface (RIS) is an emerging technology that can improve the spectrum and energy efficiency of next-generation wireless networks. However, attaining accurate channel state information (CSI) for the cascaded RIS channel is particularly challenging. Imperfect CSI is a major bottleneck to achieving the spectral efficiency benefit of RIS-assisted networks. Rate splitting (RS), a promising multiple access technology, has been shown to be able to achieve an improved spectrum efficiency and be robust to channel uncertainties. This paper investigates the interplay between RIS and RS by considering a RIS-assisted RS beamforming problem. Active beamforming at the base station (BS) and passive beamforming at the RIS are jointly considered to maximize the minimum user rate under both the perfect CSI case and the imperfect CSI case. A block coordinate descent (BCD) algorithm is developed to solve this non-convex problem. Compared with the conventional semi-definite relaxation (SDR) approach, the proposed method does not require that the covariance matrix of the common beamforming vector be rank-one. Moreover, we present theoretical results to help reveal the impact of the system parameters and explain the performance gain resulting from the integration of RIS and RS. Extensive simulation results are also provided to show that RIS-assisted RS can improve the max-min rate performance significantly compared with conventional multiple access technologies, such as non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) and space division multiple access (SDMA) with/without RIS, especially in overloaded systems. With the proposed method, RS shows great potential in combating realistic CSI errors in RIS-assisted networks.

Uplink Multiple Access With Semi-Grant-Free Transmission in Integrated Satellite-Aerial-Terrestrial Networks

This paper investigates a semi-grant-free (SGF) based transmission strategy to provide a flexible connectivity for various kinds of users in an integrated satellite-aerial-terrestrial network (ISATN). Herein, a high-altitude platform (HAP) termed as a grant-based user (GBU), which serves multiple mobile terminals (MTs) through space division multiple access (SDMA), wants to access a satellite network with multiple earth stations (ESs) termed as grant-free users (GFUs) simultaneously via non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) assisted SGF. To this end, we first propose two SGF-based uplink transmission schemes for both perfect channel state information (CSI) and imperfect CSI cases. When perfect CSI is available, a zero-forcing based beamforming (BF) scheme is used in HAP network while an adaptive transmit power allocation (ATPA) approach is adopted for SGF transmission. When only imperfect CSI is available, BF scheme employing the derived channel correlation matrix of HAP-MT link is proposed to achieve SDMA, and a novel ATPA strategy with rate probability constraint is proposed to guarantee quality-of-service of the GBU. Next, we derive the closed-form throughput expressions to evaluate the performance of the considered ISATN with the proposed two SGF-based schemes. Finally, computer simulations are conducted to validate the theoretical performance analysis and show the superiority of the proposed schemes over the related works. Moreover, our numerical results not only demonstrate a satisfactory performance of the proposed SGF-based scheme using imperfect CSI, but also reveal the impact of CSI errors on the system performance.

Resource Allocation for an IRS-Assisted Dual-Functional Radar and Communication System: Energy Efficiency Maximization

Dual-functional radar and communication (DFRC) techniques are promising in the next generation wireless communication network. An intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) can improve the energy efficiency (EE) of the DFRC system, which is of crucial importance in practical applications. However, the EE achieved by using the sum-rate can be limited by the channel conditions and the radar performance requirement. Thus, in this paper, the EE maximization problem is studied in an IRS-assisted DFRC system. The EE is maximized by jointly optimizing the transmit beamforming and the IRS phase shift matrix under both the perfect channel state information (CSI) and the imperfect CSI cases. To tackle the challenging nonconvex fractional optimization problem, an alternating optimization algorithm is proposed. The high-order challenging radar performance constraint is tackled by using properties of the convex function and Hermitian matrix involved in the analysis. In the imperfect CSI case, the <inline-formula xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink"> <tex-math notation="LaTeX">${\mathcal{S}}$ </tex-math></inline-formula> -Procedure is applied to tackle the semi-infinite inequality arising from the channel uncertainty. Simulation results demonstrate that our proposed design enjoys fast convergence and achieves a higher EE compared to the benchmark schemes, even under imperfect CSI case. Furthermore, simulation results demonstrate that the EE of the DFRC system can be significantly improved by applying IRS.

Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface Based Uplink MU-MIMO Symbiotic Radio System

In this paper, we investigate a novel uplink reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) based multi-user multi-input multi-output symbiotic radio system. It indicates that each RIS, as an Internet-of-Things (IoT) device, enhances the primary transmission from a nearby user to the base station (BS), and simultaneously transmits its own information to the BS by backscattering modulation. By embedding environmental sensors on the RISs, the proposed system enables the IoT transmission of locally collected environmental data to the BS while assisting the primary communications from the users to the BS. We consider both the case of perfect and imperfect channel state information (CSI), and design the active beamforming at the BS and the passive beamforming at the RISs jointly to maximize the weighted sum-rate of both the primary and IoT transmissions. For the perfect CSI case, we propose an algorithm based on the block coordinate descent (BCD) method to solve the problem. We also propose another algorithm with a similar framework to reduce the computational complexity. For the imperfect CSI case, an algorithm based on BCD and the online successive convex approximation technique is proposed. Simulation results show that the proposed system achieves significant performance gain over a number of baseline schemes for both the perfect and imperfect CSI cases. Furthermore, when the channel estimation error is small, the performance loss due to imperfect CSI is insignificant.

Zero Forcing Uplink Detection Through Large-Scale RIS: System Performance and Phase Shift Design

A multiple-input multiple-output wireless communication system is analytically studied, which operates with the aid of a large-scale reconfigurable intelligent surface (LRIS). LRIS is equipped with multiple passive elements with discrete phase adjustment capabilities, and independent Rician fading conditions are assumed for both the transmitter-to-LRIS and LRIS-to-receiver links. A direct transceiver link is also considered which is modeled by Rayleigh fading distribution. The system performance is analytically studied when the linear yet efficient zero-forcing detection is implemented at the receiver. In particular, the outage performance is derived in closed-form expression for different system configuration setups with regards to the available channel state information (CSI) at the receiver. In fact, the case of both perfect and imperfect CSI is analyzed. Also, an efficient phase shift design approach at LRIS is introduced, which is linear on the number of passive elements and receive antennas. The proposed phase shift design can be applied on two different modes of operation; namely, when the system strives to adapt either on the instantaneous or statistical CSI. Finally, some impactful engineering insights are provided, such as how the channel fading conditions, CSI, discrete phase shift resolution, and volume of antenna/LRIS element arrays impact on the overall system performance.

Joint Secure Transceiver Design for an Untrusted MIMO Relay Assisted Over-the-Air Computation Networks With Perfect and Imperfect CSI

In this paper, we investigate the physical layer security of an untrusted relay assisted over-the-air computation (AirComp) network, where each node is equipped with multiple antennas and the relay is operated in an amplify-and-forward mode. The relay receives the data from each sensor and sends them to the access point (AP) in the first and second time slot, respectively. The AP applies artificial noise (AN) to protect the aggregation of sensors’ data from being wiretapped by the untrusted relay in the first time slot. In particular, we are interested in minimizing the computation distortion measured by the mean-squared error (MSE) via jointly optimizing beamforming matrices at all nodes, subject to the MSE constraint at the relay and individual power constraints at the AP, the relay and each sensor. In the case of the perfect channel state information (CSI), we convert the nonconvex MSE minimization problem into a difference-of-convex (DC) form and propose a constrained concave-convex procedure that can obtain a local minimum to solve the DC problem. We also generalize the framework to an imperfect CSI case where the additional interference term due to incomplete interference cancellation is considered, and the nonconvex robust MSE minimization problem is solved by a proposed inexact block coordinate descent algorithm. Numerical results are presented to show the effectiveness of our proposed schemes.

Deep Learning-Based Hybrid Precoding for Terahertz Massive MIMO Communication With Beam Squint

In this letter, a wideband hybrid precoding network (WHPC-Net) based on deep learning is designed for Terahertz (THz) massive multiple input multiple output (MIMO) system in the face of beam squint. Firstly, the channel state information (CSI) is preprocessed by calculating the mean channel covariance matrix (MCCM). Next, the analog precoder can be calculated based on the analog precoding sub-network (APC-Net) using the information of the MCCM. Finally, the digital precoder will be obtained with the aid of the digital precoding subnetwork (DPC-Net), employing the related outputs of the APC-Net and the MCCM. Simulation results show that the proposed WHPC-Net is more robust to the beam squint over the existing traditional hybrid precoders. For the case of imperfect CSI, the proposed WHPC-Net even is capable of achieving a higher sum rate than the full-digital precoder based on singular value decomposition.

Secrecy Rate Optimization in Nonlinear Energy Harvesting Model-Based mmWave IoT Systems With SWIPT

Secrecy rate (SR) optimization in millimeter wave (mmWave) Internet of Things (IoT) systems with simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) is studied in this article. Adopting the SWIPT architecture, energy-constrained devices get charged by the radio-frequency waves transmitted from a base station. The hybrid precoding technique is applied to reduce the implementation cost by separately designing a digital precoder and an analog precoder. Also, we adopt the artificial noise (AN)-assisted transmission method to maximize the SR. In this problem, we aim to jointly optimize the digital precoding vector, AN covariance matrix, and power-splitting ratio under the nonlinear energy harvesting (EH)-constraints. Then, we propose a semidefinite relaxation-based alternating optimization algorithm for the case of perfect channel state information (CSI) and imperfect CSI. Finally, simulation results show that the proposed algorithms are effective to improve the SR.

Robust Precoding for Multi-User Visible Light Communications with Quantized Channel Information

In this paper, we address the design of multi-user multiple-input single-output (MU-MISO) precoders for indoor visible light communication (VLC) systems. The goal is to minimize the transmitted optical power per light emitting diode (LED) under imperfect channel state information (CSI) at the transmitter side. Robust precoders for imperfect CSI available in the literature include noisy and outdated channel estimation cases. However, to the best of our knowledge, no work has considered adding robustness against channel quantization. In this paper, we fill this gap by addressing the case of imperfect CSI due to the quantization of VLC channels. We model the quantization errors in the CSI through polyhedric uncertainty regions. For polyhedric uncertainty regions and positive real channels, as is the case of VLC channels, we show that the robust precoder against channel quantization errors that minimizes the transmitted optical power while guaranteeing a target signal to noise plus interference ratio (SNIR) per user is the solution of a second order cone programming (SOCP) problem. Finally, we evaluate its performance under different quantization levels through numerical simulations.

Resource Allocation in a MIMO Full-Duplex Relay Network With Imperfect CSI and Energy Harvesting

In this article, a two-hop simultaneous wireless information and power transfer relay network using a decode-and-forward strategy is considered. In order to improve the spectral efficiency, the relay node performs in full-duplex (FD) mode, and each node is equipped with multiple antennas. First, the end-to-end achievable rate is formulated for FD and half-duplex (HD) modes under imperfect channel state information (ICSI). Then, the optimal closed-form expressions for power allocation at the source and relay, as well as the energy harvesting ratios, are derived for primal variables associated with the dual variables through analytical solutions. We propose an iterative primal-dual algorithm based on the ellipsoid method so as to obtain final answers. Numerical results demonstrate the FD achievable rate superiority over the HD mode under proper self-interference cancellation (SIC). According to the existing results, there is an immense discrepancy between the achievable rates in perfect CSI and ICSI cases. Also, the impact of the relay distance from the source node, the number of antennas, and different SIC modes are investigated on the end-to-end achievable rate.

Multi-Objective Optimization for Spectrum and Energy Efficiency Tradeoff in IRS-Assisted CRNs With NOMA

Non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) is a promising candidate for the sixth generation wireless communication networks due to its high spectrum efficiency (SE), energy efficiency (EE), and better connectivity. It can be applied in cognitive radio networks (CRNs) to further improve SE and user connectivity. However, the interference caused by spectrum sharing and the utilization of non-orthogonal resources can downgrade the achievable performance. In order to tackle this issue, intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) is exploited in a downlink multiple-input-single-output (MISO) CRN with NOMA. To realize a desirable tradeoff between SE and EE, a multi-objective optimization (MOO) framework is formulated under both the perfect and imperfect channel state information (CSI). An iterative block coordinate descent (BCD)-based algorithm is exploited to optimize the beamforming design and IRS reflection coefficients iteratively under the perfect CSI case. A safe approximation and the <inline-formula xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink"> <tex-math notation="LaTeX">$ \mathcal {S}$ </tex-math></inline-formula> -procedure are used to address the non-convex infinite inequality constraints of the problem under the imperfect CSI case. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed scheme can achieve a better balance between SE and EE than baseline schemes. Moreover, it is shown that both SE and EE of the proposed algorithm under the imperfect CSI can be significantly improved by exploiting IRS.

User Clustering and Power Allocation for Massive MIMO With NOMA-Inspired Cognitive Radio

This paper proposes a massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) system based on cognitive radio (CR) networks. To reduce the users interference, we propose an efficient user clustering algorithm. Within a cluster, we consider the user with the weak channel gain as a primary user (PU) and the user with the strong channel gain as a secondary user (SU). Given the quality of service for both PUs and SUs, we propose a power allocation (PA) method that maximizes the sum rate. The PA optimization problem is discussed into three scenarios which depend on the available transmit power. Thereafter, we derive a robust solution for the PA issue under imperfect channel state information (CSI) assumptions. Simulation results demonstrate that our proposed NOMA-CR scheme can significantly improve the spectral efficiency (SE). In addition, the proposed robust PA scheme for the imperfect CSI case reduces the performance loss due to the channel uncertainty.

A Robust Deep Learning-Based Beamforming Design for RIS-Assisted Multiuser MISO Communications With Practical Constraints

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) has become a promising technology to improve wireless communication in recent years. It steers the incident signals to create a favorable propagation environment by controlling the reconfigurable passive elements with less hardware cost and lower power consumption. In this paper, we consider a RIS-aided multiuser multiple-input single-output downlink communication system. We aim to maximize the weighted sum-rate of all users by joint optimizing the active beamforming at the access point and the passive beamforming vector of the RIS elements. Unlike most existing works, we consider the more practical situation with the discrete phase shifts and imperfect channel state information (CSI). Specifically, for the situation that the discrete phase shifts and perfect CSI are considered, we first develop a deep quantization neural network (DQNN) to simultaneously design the active and passive beamforming while most reported works design them alternatively. Then, we propose an improved structure (I-DQNN) based on DQNN to simplify the parameters decision process when the control bits of each RIS element are greater than 1 bit. Finally, we extend the two proposed DQNN-based algorithms to the case that the discrete phase shifts and imperfect CSI are considered simultaneously. Our simulation results show that the two DQNN-based algorithms have better performance than traditional algorithms in the perfect CSI case, and are also more robust in the imperfect CSI case.

Collision Resolution for Random Access

As a building block toward a simple and scalable solution for massive random access, we introduce collision-resolution algorithms using successive interference cancellation (SIC) based on the received signals, with no need for any coordination or codebook differentiation. We first consider two-user multiple access with the ZigZag algorithm. We prove that the original ZigZag and a modified version of it, called double-zipper ZigZag, attain the same performance as the optimal coordinated time-sharing in the high signal to noise ratio (SNR) regime, even in the presence of channel state information (CSI) errors. We then extend the results to the case of arbitrary number of users employing delay-domain processing. Specifically, we introduce delay-domain zero forcing and its regularized version, which are able to cancel and suppress the interference among users, respectively. By obtaining a post-processing system model and characterizing the accumulated noise during the decoupling process, we also derive bounds on the achievable sum-rates of the proposed algorithm for both cases of perfect and imperfect CSI. Simulation results show that the newly proposed approach have comparable performance with coordinated time-sharing at high SNRs.

Power allocation with QoS satisfaction in mmWave beamspace MIMO‐NOMA

In this paper, a non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) scheme is considered for downlink millimeter-wave (mmWave) transmissions over beamspace massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channels. To improve the NOMA detection and reduce its complexity, it is assumed that users are grouped in clusters. The major benefit of the NOMA depends on the power allocation (PA) among users. In this context, to ensure the quality of service (QoS) of users, a threshold rate for each user is defined. The aim of this work is to propose a new PA strategy that takes into account the pre-defined threshold rates and maximizes the achievable sum rate. Thereafter, considering the Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) conditions, a closed-form solution for the PA issue under perfect and imperfect channel state information (CSI) assumptions is derived. Through simulation results, it is shown that the proposed scheme outperforms the conventional orthogonal multiple access techniques in terms of spectral efficiency (SE) and energy efficiency (EE). In addition, the proposed robust PA scheme for the imperfect CSI case reduces the performance loss due to the channel uncertainty.

Joint Beamforming and Power-Splitting Design for Cooperative Nonorthogonal Multicast

We propose a cooperative nonorthogonal multicast scheme for multiple-input-single-output (MISO) systems, where the transmitter sends the superimposed signal to two multicast groups. After successfully detecting all signals, the cell-center users (CCUs) in one multicast group help relay signal to the cell-edge users (CEUs) in another group to enhance signal reception. Simultaneous wireless information and power transfer is adopted at CCUs to assist information relaying. In such a system, to minimize the transmission power of the system while satisfying the quality of service requirements of all the users, an optimization problem is formulated to jointly design the transmitter beamformers, distributed CCUs beamformer, as well as the power-splitting (PS) ratios. To solve the nonconvex problem, we first equivalently transform it into a difference of convex (DC) programming. Then, a low-complexity iterative algorithm based on the constrained concave convex procedure (CCCP) is proposed to solve the DC programming one. In addition, a robust joint beamforming and PS scheme is proposed by assuming imperfect channel state information (CSI). The infinite constraints caused by CSI uncertainties are converted into finite ones utilizing the S-procedure. To obtain a rank-one locally optimal solution, the penalty function method and CCCP algorithm are adopted. The simulation results reveal that the proposed cooperative scheme can greatly reduce the transmission power and outperform the baselines within a certain range. Moreover, the robustness and effectiveness of the robust design under imperfect CSI case have been validated.

Covert Transmission Assisted by Intelligent Reflecting Surface

Covert transmission is studied for an intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) aided communication system, where Alice aims to transmit messages to Bob without being detected by the warden Willie. Specifically, an IRS is used to increase the data rate at Bob under a covert constraint. For the considered model, when Alice is equipped with a single antenna, the transmission power at Alice and phase shift at the IRS are jointly optimized to maximize the covert transmission rate with either instantaneous or partial channel state information (CSI) of Willie's link. In addition, when multiple antennas are deployed at Alice, we formulate a joint transmit beamforming and IRS phase shift optimization problem to maximize the covert transmission rate. One local optimal algorithm and two low-complexity suboptimal algorithms are proposed to solve the problem. Furthermore, for the case of imperfect CSI of Willie's link, the optimization problem is reformulated by using the triangle and Cauchy-Schwarz inequalities. The reformulated optimization problems are solved using an alternative algorithm, semidefinite relaxation (SDR) and Gaussian randomization techniques. Finally, simulations are performed to verify our analysis. The numerical results show that an IRS can degrade the covert transmission rate when Willie is closer to the IRS than Bob.

Performance Analysis of Massive MIMO Relay Systems With Variable-Resolution ADCs/DACs Over Spatially Correlated Channels

The use of low-resolution analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) and digital-to-analog converters (DACs) is recognized as a practical technique to reduce power consumption and hardware cost for massive multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) systems. In this context, by leveraging on the additive quantization noise model (AQNM), this paper investigates the performance of massive MIMO relay systems with a variable-resolution ADC/DAC-based architecture, where each ADC and DAC use arbitrary bits for quantization. To be specific, we first derive the closed-form expression of achievable rate over spatially correlated Rayleigh fading channels by using perfect channel state information (CSI), maximal ratio combining (MRC), and maximal ratio transmission (MRT). Afterwards, we extend the work to the case of imperfect CSI. The analytical expressions reveal some insights of key parameters, i.e., spatial channel correlation, large-scale fading coefficients, estimate errors, and the resolution of ADCs/DACs. Finally, simulation results validate our theoretical analyses and confirm that the achievable rate reduces as the spatial correlation rises. Besides, we provide the condition under which coarse DACs (ADCs) and receive spatial correlation (transmit spatial correlation) dominate the loss of achievable rate. Moreover, provided that the total number of quantization bits is constant, we find that the achievable rate is optimal over spatially correlated channels when all ADC and DAC adopt the same quantization bits from the perspective of statistic.

Symbol Error Rate Minimization Based Constructive Interference Precoding for Multi-User Systems

Symbol level precoding based on the concept of constructive interference has been recognized as an advanced version of conventional interference-avoidance precoding for multi-user transmission. With the full knowledge of channel state information (CSI) and symbol information, inter-user interference is adjusted to bring constructive effect to the desired signal. However, the existing schemes are limited within the concept of channel pre-equalization which could be further improved. In this paper, we propose a symbol error rate (SER) minimization based constructive interference precoding scheme for multi-user systems. The constructive interference region is firstly defined based on the analysis of the SER expression, which implies that the proposed scheme is essentially a symbol pre-detection scheme. Then, we prove that the optimal precoded signal for SER minimization shall be the linear combination of the channel vectors. Accordingly, a modified feasible direction algorithm is developed to handle the complex expression of SER, where an extra projection step is proposed to enhance the efficiency of the feasible direction. Finally, the proposed scheme is further extended for transmit power optimization and imperfect CSI cases. Simulation results highlight the efficiency of the modified feasible direction, and the superiority of the proposed scheme in terms of SER and transmit power.

Energy Efficient Robust Beamforming and Cooperative Jamming Design for IRS-Assisted MISO Networks

Energy-efficient design and secure communications are of crucial importance in wireless communication networks. However, the energy efficiency achieved by using physical layer security can be limited by the channel conditions. In order to tackle this problem, an intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) assisted multiple input single output (MISO) network with independent cooperative jamming is studied. The energy efficiency is maximized by jointly designing the transmit and jamming beamforming and IRS phase-shift matrix under both the perfect channel state information (CSI) and the imperfect CSI. In order to tackle the challenging non-convex fractional problems, an algorithm based on semidefinite programming (SDP) relaxation is proposed for solving energy efficiency maximization problem under the perfect CSI case while an alternate optimization algorithm based on <i xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">S</i> -procedure is used for solving the problem under the imperfect CSI case. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed design outperforms the benchmark schemes in term of energy efficiency. Moreover, the tradeoff between energy efficiency and the secrecy rate is found in the IRS-assisted MISO network. Furthermore, it is shown that IRS can help improve energy efficiency even with the uncertainty of the CSI.
