Purpose: The aim of the study was to examine impact of agricultural practices on nitrate pollution in groundwater in India Methodology: This study adopted a desk methodology. A desk study research design is commonly known as secondary data collection. This is basically collecting data from existing resources preferably because of its low cost advantage as compared to a field research. Our current study looked into already published studies and reports as the data was easily accessed through online journals and libraries. Findings: a significant environmental concern with far-reaching implications for human health, ecosystem integrity, and water resource management. It is evident that agricultural activities such as fertilizer application, irrigation methods, and land management practices play a pivotal role in exacerbating nitrate contamination of groundwater. The studies highlighted the complex interactions between agricultural activities and hydrological processes, elucidating the pathways through which nitrates migrate from soil to groundwater. Unique Contribution to Theory, Practice and Policy: Diffuse Pollution Theory, Hydrological Connectivity Theory & Sustainable Agriculture Theory may be used to anchor future studies on impact of agricultural practices on nitrate pollution in groundwater in India. Encourage the adoption of sustainable agricultural practices that minimize nitrate pollution while maintaining agricultural productivity. This includes promoting precision agriculture techniques, cover cropping, and integrated nutrient management systems to optimize fertilizer use and reduce nitrate leaching. Strengthen regulations and enforcement mechanisms to limit nitrate pollution from agricultural activities. This may include setting stringent water quality standards for nitrate concentrations in groundwater and implementing monitoring programs to assess compliance.

The impact of agricultural practices on groundwater depletion: A spatiotemporal analysis of India

ABSTRACTIn recent decades, intensive agricultural activities have adversely impacted the groundwater resources. The post‐green revolution era in India witnessed excessive irrigation practices that negatively impacted sustainable groundwater utilization. This study aims to analyze trends and patterns of groundwater depletion and identify potential factors to determine groundwater depletion across Indian states for the period 2004–2020. In doing so, percentage of safe blocks in terms of groundwater status is used as proxy for groundwater depletion. Employing the Mann–Kendal Method and Sen's slope, the study examines groundwater trends, while spatial analysis is conducted using Moran's I technique. Furthermore, a Fixed Effect‐Generalized Least Square (FE‐GLS) regression approach is employed to identify factors that influence groundwater status. Findings reveal the spatial autocorrelation of groundwater extraction among Indian states, which reflected by a Moran's I value of 0.62. Additionally, this study found that region of northern and southern India exhibits increasing trend groundwater depletion as compared to other regions. Based on the results of FE‐GLS regression and regression with Driscroll–Kraay standard error, our study indicates that crop intensity, gross irrigated land, gross sown area, and the area sown with water‐intensive crops have a negative and significant impacts on the percentage of safe blocks in terms of groundwater availability. Conversely, we found that annual rainfall has a positive and significant relationship with the percentage of safe blocks. From a policy perspective, the study suggests regulating the cultivation of water‐intensive crops and advocates for integrated policies to ensure sustainable water resource and food security – a balance often termed the food‐water‐energy nexus.

Spatial Correlations between Nitrogen Budgets and Surface Water and Groundwater Quality in Watersheds with Varied Land Covers

Anthropogenic nitrogen (N) inputs can have detrimental environmental effects, necessitating a comprehensive understanding of the nitrogen budget (NB) and its spatial correlation with the water quality. This study, utilizing a 2016 dataset, scrutinized 850 subwatersheds with diverse land covers across the Republic of Korea (ROK). Employing Geographically Weighted Regression (GWR), it examined the spatial correlations between the NBs and the quality of the groundwater and river water at the watershed scale. Robust correlations (R2 = 0.87) were observed between the groundwater quality and NBs, surpassing those of the surface water (R2 = 0.48). Sensitivity analyses highlighted the importance of high-resolution spatial data in capturing nuances within complex land covers. The integration of such data led to increases in the spatial correlations between the groundwater and river water quality of approximately 0.6–0.9 and 0.3–0.5, respectively. Notably, when the agricultural land cover exceeded 10%, significant enhancements in the spatial correlations were observed, emphasizing the pivotal role of agriculture in nutrient and water quality. At a 10% cropland ratio, the spatial correlations between the watershed-scale NBs and river/groundwater quality increased by approximately 76% and 501%, respectively. This study provides novel insights into the spatial relationships among NBs, water quality, and land use, highlighting the significance of high-resolution data and the impact of agricultural practices on watershed management. These findings contribute valuable information for developing strategies to mitigate nitrogen pollution.

Impacts of Agricultural Practices (Pesticides and Fertilizers) and Amalnala Stream on Amalnala Lake in Gadchandur, India

Amalnala lake is situated in the Gadchandur town of Chandrapur district in Maharashtra, India. The lake water was turning green in colour in the month of september. This study gives an insight into the causes and factors responsible for the greening of the lake adjacent to Manikgarh limestone mine in the month of September. It was noted that, phosphate concentration in lake water showed rise after July (2020, 2021) and peaked in August (2020, 2021). The phosphates were mainly contributed by organophosphate pesticides such as monocrotophos, profenofos, and chlorpyrifos, which were identified by liquid chromatography triple quadrupole mass spectrometry (LC MS/MS). The rise in phosphates showed complete correlation with the rainfall and chlorophyl a (chl a) content in September (2020, 2021). Similarly, the nitrate concentration of the lake showed peak in August (2020, 2021) followed by the rise in chl a content in September (2020, 2021). Chemical oxygen demand (COD) and biological oxygen demand (BOD) of the lake was calculated and represented in terms of COD/BOD. The COD/BOD were highest in September (2020, 2021). Positive correlation was observed between the pH, total dissolved solids, and electrical conductivity of Amalnala Lake and Amalnala Stream which flows into the lake. This stream mainly carries the contaminants from open cast Manikgarh limestone mines to Amalnala Lake. Chl a was mainly contributed by two dominant species of cyanobacteria, Phormidium species CCALA 726 which was identified by 16S rRNA sequencing and Microcystis aeruginosa which was identified by using the keys given by Desikachary and Komarek and Anagnostidis. This study thus concluded that the pesticides, nitrates, and Amalnala Stream contributed in the growth of cyanobacteria which causes the greening of the lake.

Imidacloprid and acetamiprid synergistically downregulate spaetzle and myD88 of the Toll pathway in haemocytes of the European honeybee (Apis mellifera)

Pollinator health has been of critical concern over the last few decades. The prevalence of the honeybee Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD), changing climate, and the rise of vector-borne honeybee diseases by Varroa destructor, have played a major role in the rapid decline of global honeybee populations. Honeybees are environmentally and economically significant actors in biodiversity. The impact of agricultural practices, such as pesticide use, has exacerbated the negative effects on honeybees. We demonstrate the synergistic effect of cocktails of the neonicotinoids imidacloprid and acetamiprid on honeybee haemocytes. Two genes responsible for critical immune responses, spaetzle and myD88, are consistently dysregulated following exposure to either neonicotinoid alone or as a mixture with or without an immune challenge. The 2018 ban of neonicotinoids in Europe, followed by the 2020 reauthorisation of imidacloprid in France and the current consideration to reinstate acetamiprid underscores the need to evaluate their cumulative impact on honeybee health.

Agricultural drivers of field margin plant communities are scale-dependent

In recent decades, agricultural intensification has led to a strong decline in biodiversity. Field margins act as shelters and dispersal corridors for biodiversity in highly disturbed landscapes, and are critical to the maintenance of ecosystem services. However, they are also impacted by agricultural practices in neighboring fields. Agricultural impacts are often studied at field to landscape scales, and rarely across biogeographic regions. One of the challenges in large-scale studies is the lack of standardized monitoring schemes including both biodiversity and accurate estimation of agricultural practices. Here, we take advantage of a national monitoring scheme in 462 sites in France, to assess the effects of agricultural practices on field margin flora at different extents and resolutions. We used spatial simultaneous autoregressive and generalized dissimilarity models to assess the response of plant richness and composition to climatic, soil and landscape conditions, and to agricultural (fertilization, herbicides) and margin management drivers. Analyses were repeated at the site-level, 40 and 75 km resolutions, and at regional and national extents. We found that the impact of agricultural practices on species richness was most important at the site-level, whereas climate and crop diversity became more important at the 75 km resolution. Compositional variations responded differently, with climate being more important at the site-level, and fertilization and crop diversity at the coarsest resolution. There was a strong variation in the variance explained by models among regions, but climate effects were weaker within biogeographic units compared to the national level, and different agricultural practices stood out as influential in different regions, suggesting that the regional context is fundamental in determining plant community structure. To efficiently conserve biodiversity, we therefore recommend the implementation of agricultural measures adapted to each region.

Impact of agricultural practices on ecosystem health of lagoons: a case study of the Keta Lagoon Complex in Ghana, West Africa

The paper reports on the current ecological health of the Keta Lagoon Complex by analyzing a suite of physical, chemical, and biological environmental conditions prevailing within it. Results are discussed in relation to the main human activity (i.e., agriculture) prevailing in its catchment. The current water quality of the lagoon has declined compared to data collected 20years ago with elevated levels in parameters such as nitrate, phosphate, turbidity, and temperature. Secchi disk depth, salinity, and dissolved oxygen levels in the lagoon have decreased. More than 60% of the total area of the lagoon is predicted to be currently unsuitable to support aquatic life. The Carlson's TSI estimated for the various zones of the lagoon ranged between 72.40 and 80.61 depicting a highly eutrophic lagoon, with about 90% of the total area studied confirmed to be experiencing some degree of eutrophication. The plankton index of biotic integrity also yielded high values of between 3 and 6 in most areas of the lagoon, thereby affirming the poor health of the lagoon. The diversity of phytoplankton and benthic macroinvertebrate species in the lagoon has reduced significantly in the last two decades with about 11 genera of phytoplankton missing in the present study. Benthic macroinvertebrate assemblage richness, evenness, and diversity have decreased from 3.6, 2.0, and 5.8 in 2008 to 1.2, 0.8, and 1.7 respectively, in the present study. Overall, the health of the Keta Lagoon remains poorer and continues to decline with no signs of recovery.

Characterization of Dissolved Organic Matter from Agricultural and Livestock Effluents: Implications for Water Quality Monitoring.

There is growing concern about the impact of agricultural practices on water quality. The loss of nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorous through agricultural runoff poses a potential risk of water quality degradation. However, it is unclear how dissolved organic matter (DOM) composition is associated with pollution levels in water bodies. To address this, we conducted a cross-year investigation to reveal the nature of DOM and its relationship to water quality in agricultural effluents (AEs) and livestock effluents (LEs). We discovered that DOM fluorescence components of AEs were mainly from autochthonous and terrestrial sources, while in LEs it was primarily from autochthonous sources. LEs showed a higher β:α and biological index (BIX) than AEs, indicating that LEs had higher biological activity. Compared to the LEs, DOM in AEs exhibited a higher humification index (HIX), illustrating that DOM was more humic and aromatic. Overall, our results suggest that the BIX and fluorescence index (FI) were best suited for the characterization of water bodies impacted by LEs and AEs. Excitation-emission matrix spectroscopy and parallel factor (EEMs-PARAFAC) analysis showed that DOM in AEs was mainly a humic-like material (~64%) and in LEs was mainly protein-like (~68%). Tryptophan-like compounds (C1) were made more abundant in AEs because of the breakdown of aquatic vegetation. The microbial activity enhanced protein-like substances (C1 and C2) in LEs. Our study revealed a positive correlation between five-day biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5) concentrations and tyrosine-like substance components, suggesting that fluorescence peak B may be a good predictor of water quality affected by anthropogenic activities. For both LEs and AEs, our results suggest that peak D may be a reliable water quality surrogate for total phosphorus (TP).

Potential of natural language processing for metadata extraction from environmental scientific publications

Abstract. Summarizing information from large bodies of scientific literature is an essential but work-intensive task. This is especially true in environmental studies where multiple factors (e.g., soil, climate, vegetation) can contribute to the effects observed. Meta-analyses, studies that quantitatively summarize findings of a large body of literature, rely on manually curated databases built upon primary publications. However, given the increasing amount of literature, this manual work is likely to require more and more effort in the future. Natural language processing (NLP) facilitates this task, but it is not clear yet to which extent the extraction process is reliable or complete. In this work, we explore three NLP techniques that can help support this task: topic modeling, tailored regular expressions and the shortest dependency path method. We apply these techniques in a practical and reproducible workflow on two corpora of documents: the Open Tension-disk Infiltrometer Meta-database (OTIM) and the Meta corpus. The OTIM corpus contains the source publications of the entries of the OTIM database of near-saturated hydraulic conductivity from tension-disk infiltrometer measurements (https://github.com/climasoma/otim-db, last access: 1 March 2023). The Meta corpus is constituted of all primary studies from 36 selected meta-analyses on the impact of agricultural practices on sustainable water management in Europe. As a first step of our practical workflow, we identified different topics from the individual source publications of the Meta corpus using topic modeling. This enabled us to distinguish well-researched topics (e.g., conventional tillage, cover crops), where meta-analysis would be useful, from neglected topics (e.g., effect of irrigation on soil properties), showing potential knowledge gaps. Then, we used tailored regular expressions to extract coordinates, soil texture, soil type, rainfall, disk diameter and tensions from the OTIM corpus to build a quantitative database. We were able to retrieve the respective information with 56 % up to 100 % of all relevant information (recall) and with a precision between 83 % and 100 %. Finally, we extracted relationships between a set of drivers corresponding to different soil management practices or amendments (e.g., “biochar”, “zero tillage”) and target variables (e.g., “soil aggregate”, “hydraulic conductivity”, “crop yield”) from the source publications' abstracts of the Meta corpus using the shortest dependency path between them. These relationships were further classified according to positive, negative or absent correlations between the driver and the target variable. This quickly provided an overview of the different driver–variable relationships and their abundance for an entire body of literature. Overall, we found that all three tested NLP techniques were able to support evidence synthesis tasks. While human supervision remains essential, NLP methods have the potential to support automated evidence synthesis which can be continuously updated as new publications become available.

Impact of Agricultural Practices on Vegetation Structure and Carbon Sequestration in the North Region Cameroon: The Case of the Lagdo District

In order to preserve the For a good and sustainable management of vegetation in the Lagdo subdivision of the Benue division in North region Cameroon with respect to agricultural practices and the effects of climate change, a study on the impact of agricultural practices was conducted in six plant formations and three riparian villages. This study therefore assessed the impact of agricultural practices on vegetation with a focus on the assessment of plant population structure and quantification of sequestered carbon stock. Floristic surveys in six vegetation formations (forest galleries, shrub savannahs, tree savannahs, 2015/2016 crop fields, fallows of two (02) years and more than two (02) years on 50 m x 50 m plots were conducted. Floristic richness analysis identified 50 species across the surveyed sites, which were divided into 40 genera and 23 families. The most represented families in the sites are Caesalpiniaceae, Euphorbiaceae, Combretaceae, Mimosaceae and Rubiaceae, which have 5, 4, 4, 4 and 3 genera respectively. The Shannon diversity index is highest in forest galleries (3.32), in wooded savannahs (3.04); medium in fallows of more than 2 years (2.33), 2-year fallows (2.21) and shrub savannahs (2.20) and lowest in crop fields. Regarding carbon sequestration, forest galleries have carbon stocks of 57.47 tC/ha, followed by shrub savannahs with stocks of 12.66 tC/ha and fallows of more than 2 years with 3.64 tC/ha. The crop fields (0.12 tC/ha) present the lowest values, however lower than those sequestered by shrub savannahs (1.03 tC/ha) and 2-year fallows (0.88 tC/ha). The results of the study on agricultural practices in the Lagdo subdivision therefore confirm the need for sustainable management of natural resources to combat climate change.

The EU's farm‐to‐fork strategy: An assessment from the perspective of agricultural economics

AbstractThe EU Farm to Fork (F2F) strategy includes a number of policy objectives that have implications for agricultural production in the EU and beyond. This contribution discusses the possible implications from an economic perspective. We draw on economic assessments by other authors and discuss their wider implications by considering only partially quantified benefits and costs. Overall, the assessments indicate a decline in EU agricultural production in quantitative terms. The F2F strategy negatively affects aggregate consumer surplus and—depending on the assumption made—a net increase or decrease in producer surplus, thereby inducing an overall net welfare loss. Partially quantified benefits and costs include the environmental benefits and costs linked to the F2F strategy, such as implications for greenhouse gas emissions, biodiversity, or the landscape. Therefore, by launching the strategy, policy makers have implicitly concluded that the additional net benefits outweigh the losses in consumer surplus. The economic studies combined with studies on the impact of agricultural practices on biodiversity and the emission of greenhouse gases do not support this claim without further technological and institutional changes, such as supporting the application of modern biotechnology by reducing regulatory hurdles. Also, whether most consumers will share this view remains to be seen. EU policy makers have it in their hands to implement the necessary institutional changes.

Nutrients and bioactive compounds naturally packed in fruits and vegetables: an innovative tool for public policies

Fruit and vegetable consumption contributes essential nutrients and bioactive compounds to maintain optimal health, with a positive impact on the physical, mental, and social life. Evidence shows that the daily intake of different vegetables mitigates the risk of micronutrient deficiencies and non-communicable, chronic, serious, and/or fatal diseases. To promote consumption, public policies require knowledge of fruit and vegetable properties, nutrient content, and the particular effects on the new aspects of life quality such as antiaging or immunity and the impact of agricultural practices, processing, conservation and domestic preparation on these properties. The first section of this review emphasizes the nutrient content in fruits and vegetables, functional bioactive compounds, bio-accessibility, and alterations induced by production systems and/or postharvest storage, variety, and fruit or vegetable physiological state. A second and special section deals with fruits and vegetables produced in Uruguay, showing recent research carried out in the country, and a third section refers to the perspectives for the application of public policies and promotional policies for consumers, of this special health marker associated with vegetables.

Impact of Agricultural Practices on Water Quality of Old Woman Creek Watershed, Ohio

The effect of agricultural practices on water quality of Old Woman Creek (OWC) watershed was evaluated in a hydrological model using the Parameter-elevation Regressions on Independent Slopes Model (PRISM) climate data and 20 different global circulation models (GCMs) from the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 5 (CMIP5). A hydrological model was set up in the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT), while calibration was done using a Multi-Objective Evolutionary Algorithm and Pareto Optimization with PRISM climate data. Validation was done using the measured data from the USGS gage station at Berlin Road in the OWC watershed and water quality data were obtained from the water quality lab, Heidelberg University. Land use scenario simulations were conducted by varying percentages of agricultural land from 20% to 40%, 53.5%, 65%, and 80% while adjusting the forest area. A total of 105 simulations was run for the period 2015–2017: one with PRISM data and 20 with CMIP5 model data for each of the five land use classes scenarios. Ten variables were analyzed, including flow, sediment, organic nitrogen, organic phosphorus, mineral phosphorus, chlorophyll a, CBOD, dissolved oxygen, total nitrogen, and total phosphorus. For all the variables of interest, the average of the 20 CMIP5 simulation results show good correlation with the PRISM results with an underestimation relative to the PRISM result. The underestimation was insignificant in organic nitrogen, organic phosphorus, total nitrogen, chlorophyll a, CBOD, and total phosphorus, but was significant in CMIP5 flow, sediment, mineral phosphorus, and dissolved oxygen. A weak negative correlation was observed between agricultural land percentages and flow, and between agricultural land percentages and sediment, while a strong positive correlation was observed between agricultural land use and the water quality variables. A large increase in farmland will produce a small decrease in flow and sediment transport with a large increase in nutrient transport, which would degrade the water quality of the OWC estuary with economic implications.

Impact of Agricultural Practices and their Management Techniques on Soil Carbon Sequestration: A Review

Carbon emissions through various sources possess a great threat to the environment. An increase in carbon concentration in the atmosphere resulted in increased temperature. Escalating warmness in the environment started melting of glaciers, day by day water level in oceans also increasing at an alarming rate. Forests, oceans and agricultural soils act as a sink for atmospheric carbon. Sinking sites help in making the balance of various gases in the atmosphere. Managing agricultural soils provides a good opportunity for more carbon storage. Adoption of conservation tillage, incorporation or on surface management of crop residue and balanced fertilization helps in reducing carbon removal from soil. More organic matter means more humus formation and more carbon retention in soil. Such management practices not only boost soil carbon-storing capacity but also increase soil fertility through hiking nutrient availability to plants and microbial populations in the soil. Higher plant growth results in more assimilation of CO2 in the photosynthesis process.

Assessment of agricultural practices on water quality of the Tono Dam in the Upper East Region of Ghana

Population growth has resulted in drastic increase in demand for agricultural products for consumption and also as raw materials for agro-based industries. Associated with this increased demand is the application of agrochemicals to increase yields. This study assessed the impact of agricultural practices employed by farmers in the Tono catchment in the Upper East Region of Ghana on water quality. The study involved a combination of surveys and laboratory analyses. Structured questionnaires were administered to farmers to determine the various agricultural practices employed towards increasing crop yields as well as their knowledge on the environmental effects of these practices among others. Laboratory analysis was performed to determine the levels of physicochemical parameters of the reservoir water so as to ascertain its pollution level. The study showed that farmers in the catchment used mechanized ploughs to till their lands and applied fertilizer and other agrochemicals to increase yield. These practices potentially can pose serious threats on water quality of the reservoir. Although the levels of all the parameters analyzed were within the WHO guideline values, it is recommended that farmers within the area should be educated on proper application of agrochemicals and farming practices in order to ensure that the quality of the water is maintained. In particular, farming around the intake areas of the dam should be prohibited as this constitutes a major source of sediment into the reservoir. Influence of the Land Use Type on the Wild Plant Diversity.

Studies on the impact of agricultural practices on plant diversity provide important information for policy makers and the conservation of the environment. The aim of the present work was to evaluate wild plant diversity across the agroecosystems in two contrasting regions of Bulgaria; Pazardzhik-Plovdiv (representing agroecosystems in the lowlands) and Western Stara Planina (the Balkan Mountains, representing agroecosystems in the foothills of the mountains). This study conducted a two-year assessment of plant diversity in different types of agricultural and forest ecosystems, representing more than 30 land use types. Plant diversity, measured by species number, was affected by the land use type only in Pazardzhik-Plovdiv region. More pronounced was the effect of the groups of land use types on the diversity, measured by the mean species number per scoring plot. Climatic conditions, measured by 19 bioclimatic variables, were the most important factor affecting plant species diversity. Six bioclimatic variables had a significant effect on the plant diversity, and the effect was more pronounced when the analysis considered pooled data of the two regions. The highest plant diversity was found on grazing land with sparse tree cover, while the lowest one was in the land use types representing annual crops or fallow. The study also established a database on weed species, relevant to agriculture. A number of common weeds were found in the Pazardzhik-Plovdiv region, while the most frequent species in the Western Stara Planina region were indigenous ones. Overall, the natural flora of Western Stara Planina was more conserved; eleven orchid species with conservation significance were found in the pastures and meadows in that region. The present study is the first attempt in Bulgaria to characterize the plant diversity across diverse agroecosystems representing many different land use types and environmental conditions. The results can contribute to nature conservation, biodiversity, and the sustainable use of plant resources.

Advanced Identification and Quantification of Pesticide Residues in Vegetables by GC-ToFMS Technique

The identification and quantification of a large range of pesticide residues (e.g. fungicides, insecticides, acaricides) in vegetables from Romania markets, in Maramures, Alba Iulia and Botosani region, was performed by gas-chromatography coupled with time-of-flight mass spectrometry (GC-ToFMS) to better assess the impact of agricultural practices that may result from `accidental` application of higher doses of treatment solutions. The ion chromatograms obtained by GC-ToFMS enabled us to easily quantify at ppb level and to record the entire spectrum at high speeds (up to 500 spectra/second) without losing of the data quality. Although, most of the pesticide residues detected were below the limits set by the law, the results highlighted concentrations that exceeded the maximum allowed for toclofos-methyl and malathion from recent treatments and still high levels of alpha- and beta-hexachlorocyclohexane (mostly in green lettuce) from the historical treatments. It was also evidenced that green lettuce accumulated more than 77% higher amount of pesticides than cucumber, green beans and tomatoes.

This study evaluates the performance of Iowa Flood Center’s real-time distributed hydrologic model, Hillslope-Link Model (HLM). The HLM provides information about current and future streamflow conditions for over 1000 locations in Iowa, including small communities and stream gauge locations. The HLM uses a calibration-free approach in which a system of ordinary nonlinear differential equations represents the processes of rainfall to runoff translation as well as the transport of water in the river network. The authors developed a comprehensive evaluation framework to improve the model performance through modification of its structure, and not by parameter calibration. The authors explored modifications to the runoff generation modeling, and to the approach for routing water in channels. Model performance was assessed using different metrics: Nash Sutcliffe efficiency (NSE); Kling Gupta efficiency (KGE); mean absolute error of river stages (MAE); percent bias (PB); annual peak difference; ratio of hits, misses and false alarms, and timing difference. The inclusion of an interflow component alleviated problems of volume underestimation. Timing of model simulations was found to be more accurate when the routing component considered the channel stream order. In the study, effect of rainfall input on the model performance was verified with Stage IV, which includes bias adjustment using gauge information, and a radar rainfall product created in real-time by IFC without bias correction. Open-loop simulations obtained with Stage IV and IFC rainfall show similar performance. Out of all the simulations obtained with Stage IV, 88% have NSE > 0; 95% have KGE > 0; 65% have MAE < 1 foot; 83% have |PB| < 40; 35% have hit rate >40%; average peak estimation errors are below 5% at large basins and below 20% at small basins; and the average timing difference is smaller than three hours. The characteristics of landforms and the impact of agricultural practices in the region are related to the spatial distribution of model performance. The study provides the basis for future improvements of the model.

What evidence exists on the impact of agricultural practices in fruit orchards on biodiversity? A systematic map

BackgroundBiodiversity loss, partly due to intensification of agriculture, has become a global issue. In this context, fruit producers have been looking for nature-friendly production methods. By reducing intensive pesticide use and enhancing orchard management, they aim to create habitats suitable for beneficial organisms. Fruit production, especially in low-stem orchards, requires several interventions (plant protection, tillage, greenwork) throughout the year, each of them representing a disturbance. Thus, an expert system that evaluates and aggregates the impact of individual farming activities on a set of biodiversity indicators would be a valuable tool for developing new, less biodiversity-damaging scenarios. This expert system should be based on expert knowledge and scientific evidence. Surprisingly, our literature searches suggested that international journals contain few publications on the impact of most practices (except pesticide use) in orchards on biodiversity in general and beneficial organisms in particular. However, in the last decade, an increasing number of published articles have pointed out the rising importance of biodiversity in life cycle assessment. We therefore compiled and structured the available evidence to (1) assess the state of research on discrete biodiversity indicators and agricultural practices, (2) identify the literature relevant for assessing production impact and habitat suitability for supporting biodiversity and (3) provide a wide-ranging overview of existing evidence of the impact of agricultural practices in fruit orchards on biodiversity.MethodsA systematic literature search was performed in scientific journals, agronomy magazines and across the internet in English, German and French. The main reviewer followed a step-by-step eligibility scheme that was validated by a Kappa test between two reviewers. Additionally, a third reviewer checked a subset of articles. We mapped a large range of parameters, which were structured in code sets. To compute a study validity assessment, we used 13 parameters that reflected the relevance of each article to the impact of agricultural practices in fruit orchards on biodiversity indicator species groups.ResultsThe search returned 947 included articles. The map identified major differences in the attention given to different indicators and practices over time, ranging from closely investigated (clusters) to neglected (gaps)—e.g. spiders and birds or amphibians and reptiles, respectively. The majority of studies were short-term surveys, mainly done in low-stem orchards. Main areas studied were Western Europe and Eastern North America. The resulting database is presented along with descriptive statistics of the distribution and abundance of evidence across time, interventions and outcomes.ConclusionsThe current systematic map reveals that rigorous and comprehensive investigations on the suitability of orchards as perennial habitats for wildlife, run on the long-term and following a holistic approach, are still basically lacking. Although evidence base on orchard management effects on particular organisms has grown over the past two decades, information to develop reliable close-to-nature management tools and strategies is insufficient. The implications for policy and research suggest that—in view of worldwide biodiversity loss, which may cause a major threat for food production—a better understanding of the role played by orchards and their management in agricultural landscapes for biodiversity is required.
