Antifungal mechanisms of binary combinations of volatile organic compounds produced by lactic acid bacteria strains against Aspergillusflavus

Aspergillus flavus（A. flavus）, a common humic fungus known for its ability to infect agricultural products, served as the subject of investigation in this study. The primary objective was to assess the antifungal efficacy and underlying mechanisms of binary combinations of five volatile organic compounds (VOCs) produced by lactic acid bacteria, specifically in their inhibition of A. flavus. This assessment was conducted through a comprehensive analysis, involving biochemical characterization and transcriptomic scrutiny. The results showed that VOCs induce notable morphological abnormalities in A. flavus conidia and hyphae. Furthermore, they disrupt the integrity of the fungal cell membrane and cell wall, resulting in the leakage of intracellular contents and an increase in extracellular electrical conductivity. In terms of cellular components, VOC exposure led to an elevation in malondialdehyde content while concurrently inhibiting the levels of total lipids, ergosterol, soluble proteins, and reducing sugars. Additionally, the impact of VOCs on A. flavus energy metabolism was evident, with significant inhibition observed in the activities of key enzymes, such as Na+/K+-ATPase, malate dehydrogenase, succinate dehydrogenase, and chitinase. And they were able to inhibit aflatoxin B1 synthesis. The transcriptomic analysis offered further insights, highlighting that differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were predominantly associated with membrane functionality and enriched in pathways about carbohydrate and amino acid metabolism. Notably, DEGs linked to cellular components and energy-related mechanisms exhibited down-regulation, thereby corroborating the findings from the biochemical analyses. In summary, these results elucidate the principal antifungal mechanisms of VOCs, which encompass the disruption of cell membrane integrity and interference with carbohydrate and amino acid metabolism in A. flavus.

The Impact of Anthropogenic VOC Emissions on Atmospheric Pollution: A Case Study of a Typical Industrialized Area in China

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are the main precursors of pollution from ground ozone (O3) and PM2.5, which cause the deterioration of urban air quality. The emissions of VOCs from industrialized areas are significant and their characteristics are complex, which nowadays contribute significantly to the challenges of investigating the emission inventory. Taking a typical industrialized area in Tianjin as a case study, the anthropogenic VOCs emission inventory for 2020 was established in this study by using the activity data from a large-scale survey and the latest emission factors. The impact of VOCs on the environment was analyzed from the perspective of the combined control of PM2.5 and O3. The results showed that the total emission of VOCs in 2020 was about 1.68 Gg, mainly from industrial processes and mobile sources, which accounted for 38.4% and 36.5% of the total emissions, respectively. The top 10 emitted VOCs were toluene, acetone, ethylbenzene, m/p-xylene, i-pentane, n-hexane, formaldehyde, benzene, ethyl acetate and ethylene. The dominant species of O3 formation potential (OFP) were almost all aromatic hydrocarbons and alkenes, with m/p-xylene contributing the most to the OFP emissions (8.90%). The top 10 secondary organic aerosols formation potential (SOAP) emission species were aromatic hydrocarbons and long-chain alkanes, and the largest emission came from toluene (39.9%). An analysis of an ADMS diffusion model showed that VOCs emitted from traffic-heavy main roads and industrialized central areas had the greatest impact on the air quality in the surrounding areas. The VOCs concentration was higher in winter due to unfavorable meteorological conditions. Our research updated the VOC inventory of industrialized areas and evaluated VOCs species reactivity and their impact on ambient air quality.

Source apportionment and ozone formation mechanism of VOCs considering photochemical loss in Guangzhou, China

Understanding the sources and impact of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) on ozone formation is challenging when the traditional method does not account for their photochemical loss. In this study, online monitoring of 56 VOCs was carried out in summer and autumn during high ozone pollution episodes. The photochemical age method was used to evaluate the atmospheric chemical loss of VOCs and to analyze the effects on characteristics, sources, and ozone formation of VOC components. The initial concentrations during daytime were 5.12 ppbv and 4.49 ppbv higher than the observed concentrations in the summer and autumn, respectively. The positive matrix factorization (PMF) model identified 5 major emission sources. However, the omission of the chemical loss of VOCs led to underestimating the contributions of sources associated with highly reactive VOC components, such as those produced by biogenic emissions and solvent usage. Conversely it resulted in overestimating the contributions from VOC components with lower chemical activity such as liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) usage, vehicle emissions, and gasoline evaporation. Furthermore, the estimation of ozone formation may be underestimated when the atmospheric photochemical loss is not taken into account. The ozone formation potential (OFP) method and propylene-equivalent concentration method both underestimated ozone formation by 53.24 ppbv and 47.25 ppbc, respectively, in the summer, and by 40.34 ppbv and 26.37 ppbc, respectively, in the autumn. The determination of the ozone formation regime based on VOC chemical loss was more acceptable. In the summer, the ozone formation regime changed from the VOC-limited regime to the VOC-NOx transition regime, while in the autumn, the ozone formation regime changed from the strong VOC-limited regime to the weak VOC-limited regime. To obtain more thorough and precise conclusions, further monitoring and analysis studies will be conducted in the near future on a wider variety of VOC species such as oxygenated VOCs (OVOCs).

Effect of isopropanol on CO2 capture by activated carbon: Adsorption performance and regeneration capacity

Globally, fossil fuel combustion from various industrial processes has caused a significant increase in CO2 emissions, exacerbating the greenhouse effect and climate change. Therefore, effective CO2 capture technologies must be urgently developed. Vacuum temperature swing adsorption (VTSA) is an efficient technique for CO2 capture. The presence of water vapor, H2S, etc., is an important factor that affects the performance of CO2 adsorption, and they are usually removed prior to the adsorption separation process. However, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), a common component of industrial flue gas, can also affect the adsorption and capture of CO2, which is often ignored. Thus, in this study, the effect of isopropanol (IPA), one of the most common VOCs used in industry, on the CO2 removal performance is examined using an in-house VTSA device with activated carbon (AC) as the adsorbent. The effect of IPA on the CO2 adsorption performance of AC under varying IPA concentration, IPA content in AC, feed flow rate, and adsorption/desorption temperature is comprehensively investigated. The results verify that the impact of VOCs in the industrial exhaust gases on CO2 capture by adsorption cannot be disregarded.

Sensitivity analysis of volatile organic compounds to PM2.5 concentrations in a representative industrial city of Korea

This study aims to analyze the sensitivity of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) to ambient concentrations of fine particles (PM2.5) in the representative industrial city of Ulsan, Korea. For the calculation of sensitivity coefficients between VOCs and PM2.5 (SVOCs-PM2.5), PM2.5 data were obtained from an air quality monitoring station, and their corresponding 6-h average concentrations of VOCs (alkanes, alkenes, aromatics, and total VOCs) were measured at the Yeongnam intensive air monitoring station. The air monitoring period was divided into the warm-hot season (May–October 2020) and the cold season (November 2020–January 2021). The sensitivity coefficients in the low pollution period of PM2.5 (5 < PM2.5 ≤ 15 μg/m3) were higher and much higher than those in the medium pollution period (15 < PM2.5 ≤ 35 μg/m3) and high pollution period (35 < PM2.5 ≤ 50 μg/m3), respectively. This result indicates that the change ratios of PM2.5 concentrations to the background (PM2.5 ≤ 5 μg/m3) per unit concentration change of VOCs (particularly alkenes) in the high PM2.5 pollution period were much higher than those in the low pollution period. This also indicates that PM2.5 concentrations above 35 μg/m3 were more easily affected by the unit concentration change of VOCs (particularly alkenes) than those below 15 μg/m3. The average sensitivity coefficients during the cold season increased in a range of 23–125% as compared to those during the warm-hot season, except the alkenes-PM2.5 sensitivity with a decrease of 7%. It means that the impact of VOCs (except alkenes) on PM2.5 concentrations was relatively low in the cold season. However, in the cold season, the alkenes might contribute more to PM2.5 formation, particularly over the high pollution period, having PM2.5 > 35 μg/m3, than other VOC groups. The result of this study can be a basis for establishing PM2.5 management plans in industrial cities with large VOC emissions.

Floral Phytochemistry: Impact of Volatile Organic Compounds and Nectar Secondary Metabolites on Pollinator Behavior and Health.

Plants produce a plethora of phytochemicals including sugars, amino acids (AAs), volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and secondary metabolites (SMs) with different ecological functions. To attract pollinators and defenders and ensure reproductive success, plants mainly rely on VOCs, while to reward insects, plants synthesize nectar rich in sugars and AAs. Furthermore, plant SMs can play various roles. Some components are able to interact with the nervous system of insects by binding to neuron receptor proteins and thus manipulate pollinator behavior. Others, like alkaloids and phenolics, protect from nectar robbers and enhance memory and foraging efficiency, or, as in the case of flavonoids, exhibit high antioxidant activities supporting pollinator well-being. This review discusses the impact of VOCs and nectar SMs on insect behavior and pollinator health.

Bacterial volatile organic compounds attenuate pathogen virulence via evolutionary trade-offs.

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) produced by soil bacteria have been shown to exert plant pathogen biocontrol potential owing to their strong antimicrobial activity. While the impact of VOCs on soil microbial ecology is well established, their effect on plant pathogen evolution is yet poorly understood. Here we experimentally investigated how plant-pathogenic Ralstonia solanacearum bacterium adapts to VOC-mixture produced by a biocontrol Bacillus amyloliquefaciens T-5 bacterium and how these adaptations might affect its virulence. We found that VOC selection led to a clear increase in VOC-tolerance, which was accompanied with cross-tolerance to several antibiotics commonly produced by soil bacteria. The increasing VOC-tolerance led to trade-offs with R. solanacearum virulence, resulting in almost complete loss of pathogenicity in planta. At the genetic level, these phenotypic changes were associated with parallel mutations in genes encoding lipopolysaccharide O-antigen (wecA) and type-4 pilus biosynthesis (pilM), which both have been linked with outer membrane permeability to antimicrobials and plant pathogen virulence. Reverse genetic engineering revealed that both mutations were important, with pilM having a relatively larger negative effect on the virulence, while wecA having a relatively larger effect on increased antimicrobial tolerance. Together, our results suggest that microbial VOCs are important drivers of bacterial evolution and could potentially be used in biocontrol to select for less virulent pathogens via evolutionary trade-offs.

Prediction of tensile properties by pulsed NMR measurements is improved by swelling the sample with a deuterated solvent. However, in recent years, the use of organic solvents has been avoided from the viewpoint of safety and health risks and the environmental impact of volatile organic compounds. In this study, we investigated a method for predicting the tensile properties of rubber by pulsed NMR measurements without using a swelling solvent. Spin-spin relaxation measurements in dry state and tensile tests were performed on sliced sheets sampled from the surface and interior of thermally oxidized thick-walled rubber. As a result of multivariate analysis using NMR parameters obtained from spin-spin relaxation, it was found that the spin-spin relaxation time of network component (T2HS) and its Weibull coefficient (WHS) are effective as explanatory variables for tensile properties. Regression equations using T2HS and WHS could predict the extension ratio at break (λB) and the stress at 100% strain (S100) of surface and inner layers of thermally oxidized products with high accuracy.

Impact of Volatile Organic Compounds on the Growth of Aspergillus flavus and Related Aflatoxin B1 Production: A Review.

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are secondary metabolites of varied chemical nature that are emitted by living beings and participate in their interactions. In addition, some VOCs called bioactive VOCs cause changes in the metabolism of other living species that share the same environment. In recent years, knowledge on VOCs emitted by Aspergillus flavus, the main species producing aflatoxin B1 (AFB1), a highly harmful mycotoxin, has increased. This review presents an overview of all VOCs identified as a result of A. flavus toxigenic (AFB1-producing) and non-toxigenic (non AFB1-producing) strains growth on different substrates, and the factors influencing their emissions. We also included all bioactive VOCs, mixes of VOCs or volatolomes of microbial species that impact A. flavus growth and/or related AFB1 production. The modes of action of VOCs impacting the fungus development are presented. Finally, the potential applications of VOCs as biocontrol agents in the context of mycotoxin control are discussed.

Characteristics and Impact of VOCs on Ozone Formation Potential in a Petrochemical Industrial Area, Thailand

In this study, the ambient concentrations of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were intensively measured from January 2012 to December 2016 using an evacuated canister and were analyzed using a gas chromatography/mass spectrophotometer (GC/MS) based on the US EPA TO-15 in the community and industrial areas of the largest petroleum refinery and petrochemical industrial complex in Map Ta Phut Thailand. The ternary diagram was used to identify the source of VOCs. Reactivity of VOCs on their ozone formation potential (OFP) were quantified by the maximum incremental reactivity coefficient method (MIR) and propylene-equivalent concentration methods. Results from the study revealed that aromatic hydrocarbon was the dominant group of VOCs greatly contributing to the total concentration of measured VOCs. Among the measured VOCs species, toluene had the highest concentration and contributed as the major precursor to ozone formation. The ternary analysis of benzene:toluene:ethybenzene ratios indicated that VOCs mainly originated from mobile sources and industrial processes. Within the industrial area, measured VOC concentration was dominated by halogenated hydrocarbons, and alkene was the highest contributor to ozone formation. The propylene-equivalent concentration method was also used to evaluate the reactivity of VOCs and their role in ozone formation, and secondly to support findings from the MIR method.

Impact of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from acrylic double-sided pressure-sensitive adhesives (PSAs) on metals found in cultural heritage environments

An artificial aging protocol known as the Oddy test was combined with headspace solid phase micro-extraction (SPME) gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC–MS) data to identify which of 17 double-sided acrylic pressure-sensitive adhesives (PSAs) were safest to use in cultural heritage environments. Traditional Oddy testing showed every PSA corroded lead coupons while 1 also corroded copper and silver coupons. 10 PSAs were suitable for short-term use near cultural heritage artifacts while the remaining 7 were unsuitable. An adapted Oddy test identified whether several known acrylic-based adhesive precursor chemicals, including ethyl acrylate, n‑butyl acrylate, 2-ethylhexyl acrylate, acrylic acid, and abietic acid caused the observed corrosion. Lead coupons were extremely sensitive to acrylic acid, with a 5 × 10−5 mg L-1 Oddy test jar concentration capable of initiating corrosion at 60 °C and 50% RH. SPME GC–MS showed that any evidence of acrylic acid or acetic acid with peak areas larger than 19 million were both markers for unsuitable PSAs. 2-ethylhexyl acrylate was less reactive to metals though a GCMS peak area greater than 200 million was correlated with unsuitable PSAs. 3M™ 465, 3M™ 908, and Tesa® 88,250 tapes were concluded to be the best double-sided PSAs for use in cultural heritage environments.

Impact of VOCs and NOx on Ozone Formation in Moscow

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs), ozone (O3), nitrogen oxides (NOx), carbon monoxide (CO), meteorological parameters, and total non-methane hydrocarbons (NMHC) were analyzed from simultaneous measurements at the MSU-IAP (Moscow State University—Institute of Atmospheric Physics) observational site in Moscow from 2011–2013. Seasonal and diurnal variability of the compounds was studied. The highest O3 concentration in Moscow was observed in the summer daytime periods in anticyclonic meteorological conditions under poor ventilation of the atmospheric boundary layer and high temperatures (up to 105 ppbv or 210 μg/m3). In contrast, NOx, CO, and benzene decreased from 8 a.m. to 5–6 p.m. local time (LT). The high positive correlation of daytime O3 with secondary VOCs affirmed an important role of photochemical O3 production in Moscow during the summers of 2011–2013. The summertime average concentrations of the biogenic VOCs isoprene and monoterpenes were observed to be 0.73 ppbv and 0.53 ppbv, respectively. The principal source of anthropogenic VOCs in Moscow was established to be local vehicle emissions. Yet, only about 5% of the observed isoprene was safely attributed to anthropogenic sources, suggesting significant contribution of biogenic sources into the total levels of ozone precursors. The non-linear O3–NOx dependence shows a decrease in ground-level O3 with an increase in NOx during the summers of 2011–2013, which is typical for the VOC-sensitive photochemical regime of O3 formation. Nevertheless, during the elevated ozone episodes in July 2011, the photochemical regime of ozone production was either transitional or NOx-sensitive. Contribution of various anthropogenic and biogenic VOCs into the measured ozone values was evaluated. The ozone-forming potential (OFP) of total VOCs was 31–67 μg/m3 on average and exceeded 100 μg/m3 in the top 10% of high ozone events, reaching 136 μg/m3. Acetaldehyde, 1.3-butadiene, and isoprene have the highest ozone production potential in Moscow compared to that of other measured VOCs.

Impact of volatile organic compounds on chromium containing atmospheric particulate: insights from molecular dynamics simulations

The effect of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) on chromium-containing atmospheric particles remains obscured because of difficulties in experimental measurements. Moreover, several ambiguities exist in the literature related to accurate measurements of atmospheric chromium concentration to evaluate its toxicity. We investigated the interaction energies and diffusivity for several VOCs in chromium (III)-containing atmospheric particles using classical molecular dynamics simulations. We analyzed xylene, toluene, ascorbic acid, carbon tetrachloride, styrene, methyl ethyl ketone, naphthalene, and anthracene in Cr(III) solutions, with and without air, to compare their effects on solution chemistry. The interaction energy between Cr(III) and water changed from 48 to 180% for different VOCs, with the highest change with anthracene and the lowest change with naphthalene. The results revealed no direct interactions between Cr(III) particles and the analyzed volatile organic compounds, except ascorbic acid. Interactions of Cr(III) and ascorbic acid differ significantly between the solution phase and the particulate phase. The diffusion of Cr(III) and all the VOCs also were observed in a similar order of magnitude (~ 10−5 cm2/s). The results can further assist in exploring the variation in chromium chemistry and reaction rates in the atmospheric particles in the presence of VOCs.

Enhancement of exopolysaccharide production from Ganoderma lucidum using a novel submerged volatile co-culture system

Based on the impact of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) on secondary metabolite pathways, a novel submerged volatile co-culture system was constructed, and the effects of thirteen fungal and bacterial VOCs were investigated on Ganoderma lucidum exopolysaccharides production. The results demonstrated at least a 2.2-fold increase in exopolysaccharide (EPS) specific production yield in 6 days submerged volatile co-culture of G. lucidum with Pleurotus ostreatus. Therefore, P. ostreatus was selected as a variable culture, and the effects of agitation speed, inoculum size, initial pH, and co-culture volume on EPSs production were investigated using a Taguchi L9 orthogonal array. Finally, the highest concentration of EPSs (3.35 ± 0.22 g L−1) was obtained under optimized conditions; initial pH 5.0, inoculum size 10%, 150 rpm, and 3:1 volume ratio of variable culture to main culture.

Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) Removal from Indoor Air by Heterostructures/Composites/Doped Photocatalysts: A Mini-Review.

The impact of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) on indoor air quality and, furthermore, on human health is still a subject of research investigations considering the large increase in forms of cancer and related diseases. VOCs can be 10 times higher in indoor air concentrations then that of the outdoors, as a consequence of emissions from electronics, building materials and consumer goods. Direct transformation of VOCs in mineralization products seems to be an alternative to reduce indoor air contaminants. The advantage of photocatalysis implementation in indoor air treatment is given by the absence of additional chemicals (such as H2O2) and waste. The present mini-review presents a comparative study on VOCs photocatalytic removal considering the photocatalyst composition, morphology and specific surface. The sheet-like morphology seems to provide a higher number of active sites which may contribute to oxidative reactions. The insertion of materials able to increase light absorbance or to mediate the charge carrier’s transport will have a beneficial impact on the overall photocatalytic efficiency. Additionally, surface chemistry must be considered when developing photocatalysts for certain gas pollutants in order to favor molecule absorbance in the interfacial region. An energy consumption perspective is given based on the light intensity and irradiation period.

Achieving similar root microbiota composition in neighbouring plants through airborne signalling

The ability to recognize and respond to environmental signals is essential for plants. In response to environmental changes, the status of a plant is transmitted to other plants in the form of signals such as volatiles. Root-associated bacteria trigger the release of plant volatile organic compounds (VOCs). However, the impact of VOCs on the rhizosphere microbial community of neighbouring plants is not well understood. Here, we investigated the effect of VOCs on the rhizosphere microbial community of tomato plants inoculated with a plant growth-promoting rhizobacterium Bacillus amyloliquefaciens strain GB03 and that of their neighbouring plants. Interestingly, high similarity (up to 69%) was detected in the rhizosphere microbial communities of the inoculated and neighbouring plants. Leaves of the tomato plant treated with strain GB03-released β-caryophyllene as a signature VOC, which elicited the release of a large amount of salicylic acid (SA) in the root exudates of a neighbouring tomato seedling. The exposure of tomato leaves to β-caryophyllene resulted in the secretion of SA from the root. Our results demonstrate for the first time that the composition of the rhizosphere microbiota in surrounding plants is synchronized through aerial signals from plants.

Characteristics, Source Apportionment, and Environmental Impact of Volatile Organic Compounds in Summer in Yangquan

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were collected at three environmental sampling sites in Yangquan and quantified by gas chromatography-mass selective detector/flame ionization detector(GC-MSD/FID). The VOC sources were identified by diagnostic ratios and positive matrix factorization (PMF), and environmental impact of VOCs on O3 and secondary organic aerosol (SOA) were evaluated. The results showed that the average VOC concentration was (82.1±22.7) μg·m-3, with alkanes being the most abundant group (51.8%), followed by aromatics (17.8%), alkenes (8.0%), and alkynes (3.8%). The diurnal variation of VOCs exhibited a bimodal trend, with twin peaks appearing at 08:00-10:00 and 18:00-20:00, falling to a valley at 12:00-14:00. The results for benzene/toluene (2.1±1.3) and isopentane/n-pentane (1.7±0.6) showed that the ambient VOCs may be influenced by coal combustion and vehicular emissions. Six sources were extracted by PMF:coal combustion (34.9%), vehicle emissions (18.2%), gasoline evaporation (15.2%), industrial emissions (13.6%), biogenic emissions (9.2%), and solvent usage (9.0%). The average concentration of ozone formation potential (OFP) was 156.6 μg·m-3, with the highest contribution from alkenes, while the average concentration of secondary organic aerosol formation potential (SOAp) was 68.7 μg·m-3, mainly from aromatics (93.4%). In summary, coal combustion was the most abundant source of VOCs, and accelerating the management of coal gangue and energy structure readjustment are the key points to address. Meanwhile, restricting the VOCs from vehicle emissions, gasoline evaporation, and industrial emissions is also required.

Impact of volatile organic compounds and photochemical activities on particulate matters during a high ozone episode at urban, suburb and regional background stations in Beijing

Abstract Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) play key roles in the formation of particulate matter (PM) and oxidants and hence enhance the summertime air pollution. With data analysis from various field observations (urban station: Haidian, HD; suburb station: Changping, CP; regional background station: Shangdianzi, SDZ) in June 2011, we found that the mean O3 concentrations throughout the observation period can be arranged in order: SDZ＞CP＞HD. The mean PM concentrations can be arranged in order: HD＞CP＞SDZ. The mean concentration of total VOCs at HD was close to that at CP, but much higher than that at SDZ. Oxygenated volatile organic compounds (OVOCs) made the largest portion of VOCs (~40%) at the three stations, followed by alkanes and alkenes. Good positive correlations between the concentrations of PM and Ox (=O3＋NO2) at high air temperature (≥30 °C at HD and CP; ≥28 °C at SDZ) and low RH (≤60%) were found in the daytime (07:00–18:00 LT). However, the PM concentrations were partly negatively correlated with Ox at lower temperatures (≤26 °C at HD and CP; ≤22 °C at SDZ) and higher RH (≥80%). The PM concentrations were found either positively (HD and CP) or negatively (SDZ) correlated with aromatics at high temperature and low RH. The aging degree of air masses at the three stations can be arranged in order: SDZ＞CP＞HD. This can qualitatively explain the different PM−aromatics correlations. Our data suggested the other groups of VOCs may promote the increase of PM concentrations unless the PM levels become higher than 140 μg m−3 under humid conditions. This study confirms the importance of VOCs in the formation of summertime PM and oxidants over Beijing.

The impact of volatile organic compounds on ozone formation in the suburban area of Shanghai

Abstract Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are important precursors of photochemical smog and secondary organic aerosol (SOA). Quantitatively assessing the impact of VOCs on ozone (O3) formation could provide valuable information for the management of emission reduction and photochemical pollution control. In this study, we first figured out the ozone pollution episodes during 2018 at Dianshan Lake (DSL), which is located in the suburban area of Shanghai and is adjacent to three provinces of the YRD region. Then we analyzed continuous variation of O3 precursors and meteorological parameters. The online measurements show that the average volume mixing ratio of total VOCs (TVOC) was 15.41 ± 11.39 ppbv during the ozone pollution episodes, with the largest contribution from alkanes. To further identify the sources of VOCs, VOC concentration-weighted trajectories (CWT) were analyzed, and the results suggested that Zhejiang province could be the most important source region of VOCs at DSL. Analysis using an observation-base model showed that NOx and alkenes exhibited the most significant negative and positive influences on O3 formation, respectively. As for individual species, toluene and isoprene, whose S-weighted concentrations were 6.67 × 10−2 and 5.94 × 10−2 ppbv, respectively, were the key factors promoting the formation of O3 at DSL. To control the increase of O3, considering the policy feasibility, the abatement ratio of VOCs/NOx should be no less than 0.72. The findings advanced our knowledge of VOCs and their impact on O3 formation and will be helpful in formulating emission control strategies for coping with O3 pollution in YRD region.
