Impact of Religious Affiliation on Clinical Outcomes in Liver Transplant Patients.

While the impact of spirituality as it relates to quality of life post-liver transplant (LT) has been studied, there are limited data showing how religious affiliation impacts objective measures such as survival. The aim of the study is to investigate whether LT recipientswho identified as having a religious affiliation had better clinical outcomes when compared to LT recipientswho did not. Religious affiliation is obtained as part of general demographic information for patients within our institution (options of "choose not to disclose" and "no religious affiliation" are available). Subjects in this retrospective cohort study which conformed with the Declarations of Helsinki and Istanbul were separated into cohorts: LT recipientswho self-reported religious affiliation and LT recipients who did not. All LT recipients between March 2007 and September 2018 who had available information regarding their reported religion were included. Excluded patients included those who received a multi-organ transplant, underwent re-transplantation, received a partial liver graft, and identified as agnostic. Outcomes included 30-day readmission, death, and the composite outcome of re-transplantation/death. In an unadjusted analysis of 378 patients, there were no statistically significant differences between the two groups for 30-day readmission (OR=1.15, P=0.71), death (HR=0.63, P=0.19), or re-transplantation/death (HR=0.90, P=0.75). In multivariable analysis, adjusting for age at transplant and hospital admittance status when called for transplant, results were similar. We found no statistically significant difference in the outcomes measured between patients with and without self-reported religious affiliation. Further studies into the role of participation in religious activity and the impact of engagement with a religious community should be conducted in the future.

Determinants of Success of University Students in Vietnam: An Empirical Study

This paper investigates the determinants of students' success in Vietnam through conducting online interviews and surveys with 2,500 Vietnamese students at eight famous universities in Vietnam. By applying both SPSS 22 and STATA software, the study is to evaluate the impact of four driver factors, which affect GPA, language efficacy, and personal achievement. These factors are psychological perspective, home environmental, student demographic, and school environmental. The research results emphasize a positive effect of psychological and home-environmental determinants, but the negative effect of school environmental factors on the students' success. Besides, the relationship between demographics and student success was tested and indicated that male students have a better language learning ability, but a low level of academic achievement than female students. The results also point out the impact of religious affiliation and ethnicity on personal achievement. Non-religious students are better achievers than those having a religion or those in minority ethnicity. Moreover, accumulated schooling years are negatively associated with students' success. The more working experience students accrued, the higher possibility they are successful. Finally, the finding provides an insight into students' success that might be useful to government authorities and other universities in designing policies for enhancing the quality of education.

The impact of religious affiliation on college students’ 12-step model preferences

ABSTRACT Previous research has suggested that younger generations are reporting lower levels of religious affiliation and are more likely to drop out of traditional 12-step recovery programmes such as Alcoholics Anonymous than previous generations. The present study examined whether 110 millennial- and Generation Z-aged, college-students who were assessed for religiosity and substance use patterns preferred the language used in the traditional 12-step model vs. an alternative version of the model that was designed to emphasise personal empowerment over a higher power. Participants who identified as religious displayed a stronger preference for the wording of the traditional 12-step model when compared to the alternative 12-step model, however, all groups preferred the wording of the alternative 12-step model compared to the traditional 12-step wording. These findings suggest that millennial- and Generation Z-aged individuals may have a preference for language and treatment approaches that are less focused on faith and more focused on self-empowerment.

Exploration of the Association Between Religious Affiliation and Attitude Toward Spiritual Care in Clinical Nurses.

Religion is an important cultural asset that is known to affect the thoughts, behaviors, and lifestyles of individuals. However, the impact of religious affiliation, religious activities, and religious beliefs on the attitudes of nurses toward providing spiritual care to their patients is an issue that has been inadequately explored. The aim of this study was to explore the relationship between religion (including religious affiliation, religious activities, and religious beliefs) and attitude toward spiritual care in clinical nurses. This study used a cross-sectional correlation study design. Six hundred nineteen nurses were included as participants. The measurements used included a questionnaire on religious affiliation, religious activities, and religious beliefs; the Spiritual Health Scale-Short Form; the Spiritual Care Attitude Scale; and a sociodemographic datasheet. The study employed hierarchical regression modeling to establish the relationships between the aspects and degrees of religious belief and practice as well as the attitudes of participants toward spiritual care. Most of the participants participated infrequently in religious activities. After controlling for demographic variables and spiritual health, religious belief was found to be an important factor impacting participants' attitudes toward providing spiritual care. The findings indicate that religious belief is an important factor impacting the attitudes of nurses toward providing spiritual care and that the religious/spiritual beliefs of nurses may impact on their fitness to provide spiritual care to patients. Education on religion may be needed to improve the attitude of nurses toward providing spiritual care.

Centrality of Religiosity, Schizotypy, and Human Values: The Impact of Religious Affiliation

Previous research has established a reliable link between religiosity and schizotypy as well as schizophrenia. However, past research mainly measured religiosity as a one-dimensional construct. In the present research (N = 189), we aimed to get a better understanding of the religiosity–schizotypy link by measuring religiosity using Huber’s five-dimensional model of Centrality of Religiosity, while also testing for curvilinear relations and potential moderators. We found negative small-to-medium-sized correlations between all five dimensions of religiosity and the schizotypy dimension of impulsive nonconformity, but no reliable associations with the other three dimensions of schizotypy: unusual experiences, cognitive disorganization, and introverted anhedonia. Some of these associations were moderated by religious affiliation: Religiosity and schizotypy correlated positively among non-members, but negatively among members of religious communities, suggesting that affiliation has a positive impact on the well-being of religious people. In line with Huber’s predictions, we found a reversed U-shape association between the religious dimension of private religious practice and schizotypy. Unexpectedly, however, conformity and tradition values did not moderate the relations between religiosity and schizotypy. We discuss our findings in terms of person–environment fit, the prevention hypothesis of the schizotypy-religiosity link, and offer implications for mental health practitioners.

The influence of intra-cultural diversity on self-efficacy beliefs: evidence from India

Taking self-efficacy beliefs as a proxy for work performance, this study aims to explore the impact of intra-cultural diversity on self-efficacy beliefs of Indian employees. Based on Hofstede's cultural dimensions, along with religiosity and religious affiliation, we developed and tested six hypotheses against a dataset of 162 Indian employees. Multivariate regression analysis reveals a significant impact of religious affiliation, masculinity and uncertainty avoidance on self-efficacy beliefs, contradicting previous findings for India in this context. Our study contributes to the cross-cultural research in general and to the emerging literature on intra-cultural diversity in particular.

Sandra Hubert: The Impact of Religiosity on Fertility. A Comparative Analysis of France, Hungary, Norway, and Germany

The relationship between religiosity and fertility has attracted considerable attention in demographic and sociological research over the last decades. Various dimensions of religiosity, including attendance, commitment, and the centrality of religion in people’s lives, have been shown to be associated with multiple dimensions of family life such as marriage, divorce, and family size. The book comprises an important contribution to this field, presenting a multidimensional analysis on the role of religion and religiosity in shaping fertility patterns. It adopts a comparative approach between gender, generations, and countries (i.e., France, Hungary, Norway, and Germany) and combines macro and micro perspectives. The volume is based on Sandra Hubert’s dissertation defended at Ruhr-University Bochum, Germany, in 2014. The book is structured into seven chapters. After a first, introductory chapter, the second one outlines and compares family-related trends in France, Hungary, Norway, and (West and East) Germany. Then, chapter 3 defines religion and religiosity and introduces the multifaceted concept of religiosity. It also critically reviews previous evidence on the religiosity/fertility nexus. Chapter 4 theorizes the impact of religious affiliation and religiosity on fertility. Chapter 5 deviates from the general line of the book talking about micro and macro factors affecting fertility behaviors across space and time. Chapter 6 presents an empirical analysis on the link between religiosity and completed fertility in the selected countries based on the first waves of the Generations and Gender Surveys (GGS). Chapter 7 closes the paper with a summary of main findings.

THE IMPACT OF RACE ON DENOMINATIONAL VARIATIONS IN SOCIAL ATTITUDES: THE ISSUE AND ITS DIMENSIONS

Although the impact of religious affiliation on social attitudes is a popular research topic in the sociology of religion, few scholars have examined the role that race plays in this relationship. Moreover, studies that do explore the interplay of race and religious affiliation seldom move beyond the general categories of conservative, moderate, and liberal denominational families. Our research uses recent data from the General Social Surveys to compare the social attitudes of African Americans and their white counterparts within established designations of religious affiliation. Along with control variables, we include attitude measures for political tolerance, legalized abortion, gender equality, premarital sex, homosexual lifestyles, and extramarital sexual relations. Our analysis isolates levels of support for these attitudes within categories of race and religious affiliation to determine whether variations emerge and whether they are nested within specific issues, religious denominations, or reflect more general patterns of race differences.

Impact of religious affiliation and religiosity on forgiveness

The aim of the present study was to investigate the link between religiosity and forgiveness among Christian, Muslim, Jewish and secular affiliations. Measures of forgiveness included attitudes towards forgiveness (attitudinal) and tendencies to forgive transgressions in the past (behavioural) and future (projective). Religious faith, interpretation, prayer and religious service attendance were used to measure religiosity. Four hundred and seventy-five Christian, Muslim, Jewish and secular individuals participated and completed an internet-based questionnaire. This study found religiosity positively correlated with forgiveness. Religious groups reported significantly higher attitudinal and projective forgiveness than the secular group. Among religious groups, religiosity was a stronger determinant of forgiveness than the specific religion an individual was affiliated with. These findings suggested that faith is the strongest religiosity predictor of forgiveness.

Ties that Bind: The Impact of Religious Affiliation on Cooperation and Competition in Small Religious Nonprofit Organizations1

This study examines a group of small, religious, nonprofit organizations whose single common thread is funding from the Campaign for Human Development of the National Conference of Catholic Bishops. Hypotheses are made about the relationships between organizational goals, competition between groups, and linkages with other groups. The degree of interaction with other groups and the types of actions used to attain goals varies between religious and more secular nonprofit groups.

The Effect of Religious Denomination on Wealth

The wealth of probated decedents from late-nineteenth-century and early-twentieth-century Ontario is analyzed for evidence of the impact of religious affiliation on the level of wealth and rate of wealth accumulation. After controlling for age, birthplace, occupation, gender, urbanization, and other factors, the results suggest that relative to Anglicans, the wealth of Methodists and Roman Catholics was significantly lower. Moreover, when religious denomination and birthplace are interacted, Canadian-born Anglicans emerge as the dominant wealth group, while the English-born of any denomination and Methodists of any birthplace seem to fare the worst. When wealthage profiles are examined by denomination, Baptists have the steepest profiles, followed by Anglicans and Presbyterians. The data do support the hypothesis that religious affiliation, particularly when interacted with birthplace, has an impact on wealth, though the exact nature of the mechanism is unclear.

Divided by faith—The impact of religious affiliation on ethnic segregation

This paper re-examines a theme that has long permeated human geography research—that of ethnic minority segregation. However, this re-examination is carried out with an awareness of the internal religious composition of ethnic populations. The paper contends that religion is an important factor that needs to be considered in any understanding of ethnic segregation. This argument is supported by an investigation of Indian and Pakistani residential segregation in the Scottish cities of Dundee and Glasgow. This investigation assesses whether Indian residents of different faiths (Hindu, Muslim and Sikh) have divergent experiences of segregation. The concept of segregation is further explored by using the P* segregation index alongside the Index of Dissimilarity (ID). This highlights the everyday realities of segregated ethnic-faith group geographies in terms of neighbourhood interaction and thus investigates the degree to which ethnic-faith groups are segregated from each other as well as from the overall population.

Religious Affiliation and Participation as Determinants of Women's Educational Attainment and Wages

Using a human capital model, this paper develops hypotheses about how religious affiliation and participation during childhood influence years of schooling completed and subsequent performance in the labor market as measured by wages. The hypotheses are tested using data from the 1995 National Survey of Family Growth, a large-scale survey addressed to a representative sample of women in the United States. Religious affiliation is found to have a significant impact on years of schooling completed, with the effects being particularly pronounced for Jews and conservative Protestants. The impact of religious affiliation on wages largely mirrors its influence on educational attainment, although evidence of additional effects operating through other channels is also uncovered. In addition, the results show that youth who attend religious services frequently during childhood go on to complete more years of schooling than their less observant counterparts.

The impact of religious affiliation on trust in the context of electronic commerce

There is currently a growing literature on the role that trust plays in encouraging consumers to engage in e-commerce transactions. Various models have been proposed which aim to identify both the antecedents and outcomes of trust displayed towards e-commerce web sites. Increased trust is generally shown to increase positive user attitude, which in turn is linked to increased willingness to buy. Studies have shown the antecedents of trust include variables such as the perceived reputation and size of the vendor organisation. The current paper explores the role of cultural variables as antecedents of trust with the main emphasis being on religious affiliation. Participants recruited from Christian, Muslim and other faiths were asked to interact with online bookstores identified as Christian, Muslim or Neutral. Trust and attitudes towards the web sites were measured and this data was used to test the hypothesis that same-religion sites would be trusted and liked more than other religion or neutral sites. This hypothesis was partially supported, but only for the Muslim participants. It was found that the Muslim group expressed significantly more trust in the Muslim site compared to the Christian site. They also expressed significantly more positive attitudes towards the Muslim online bookstore than the other two sites. The implications of these results for theories of web based trust and attitude are discussed along with the practical implications of the findings.

Judith N. Lasker is Professor of Sociology in the Department of Social Relations at Lehigh University. Her research has been primarily in medical sociology and women's health issues, in particular on the impact of pregnancy loss and infertility. In this paper we report the results of a study of college students' attitudes to a variety of reproductive technologies, comparing the results for Jews, Protestants, and Catholics in order to assess whether there is a significant difference in attitudes among the three groups. We are also interested in whether variations in self-reported religiosity in the sample as a whole are associated with differences in opinions on these new methods of conception. Background Research on the relationship of religious affiliation to attitudes has consistently uncovered distinctions among Protestants, Catholics, and Jews. This has been true in the American political arena, where Protestants have been more likely to vote Republican, while Jews and Catholics have traditionally been more inclined to the Democrats. There are also differences in attitudes toward issues such as civil rights, with Jews consistently taking what has been cOnsidered a more liberal position.3 Protestants have regularly been found to be more conservative than non-Protestants on a variety of attitudes.4 Gerhard Lenski, in his classic study of American religious groups. The Religious Factor,5 found that only Jews were consistently liberal on each of four socio-political issues (freedom of speech, foreign aid, welfare state, and racial integration). Everett Ladd, in reviewing studies of the relative liberalism of Jews, Protestants, and Catholics,6 concluded that Jews continue to be appreciably more liberal in their views and continue to describe themselves as more liberal than the other two groups. Strength of Religious Affiliation and Life Satisfaction

This study examines the impact of the strength of religious affiliation on attitudes toward life satisfaction. The data are taken from the 1984 NORC survey. All things considered, religious persons should be happier, more satisfied, and more fulfilled than the nonreligious. This general assertion is tested with respect to happiness, family satisfaction, health satisfaction, and life excitement. The predicted association holds generally for happiness, family satisfaction, and life excitement. These three associations are confirmed under several, but not all, of the control conditions. Health satisfaction, by contrast, appears to be independent of the strength of an individual's religious affiliation. This study, based on data from the 1984 National Opinion Research Center (NORC) survey, examines the impact of the stregnth of religious affiliation on attitudes toward life satisfaction. Moberg (1972) found that religious activity is positively related to life satisfaction and morale. Not only does society as a whole develop its own system of beliefs and values to serve as guides for action, but each individual also needs to find a system of values to serve as a guide for personal activity. All need some absolute values to live by (Yinger, 1963), and in turn these values offer answers to problems of both life and death. In a review of the role of religion, Roberts (1990) underscores its importance in providing meaning and understanding for the individual. If religion does offer meaning and understanding, it should enhance the individual's subjective sense of well-being. Given these assumptions, religious affiliation should have a demonstrable impact on perceived satisfaction with life. All things considered, religious persons should be happier, more satisfied, and more fulfilled than the nonreligious. The following relationships can be hypothesized regarding the impact of religious affiliation on human satisfaction in general, as measured by attitudes toward happiness, family satisfaction, health satisfaction, and life excitement.
