The effect of quality management practices on academics’ innovative performance in Malaysian higher education institutions

ABSTRACT Several studies in higher education have attempted to study the impact of quality management practices on organisational innovation processes and outcomes in higher education institutions (HEIs). However, there is relatively limited research examining the impact of multidimensional quality management practices (QM-practices) on academics’ innovative behaviour and performance. This paper aims to explore the relationship between QM-practices and academics’ innovative work behaviour and examine how innovative behaviour affects academics’ innovative work performance. A total of 586 responses were collected from public and private universities with self-accreditation status in Malaysia. The results indicated a significant and positive relationship between Social QM-practices and academics’ innovative work behaviour. Also, a significant and positive relationship was found between innovative work behaviour and work performance. However, there is no direct impact between Social and Technical QM-practices on academic work performance. The relationship between Social QM-practices and work performance is indirectly established through innovative work behaviour. The findings signified the importance of innovative work behaviour on academic's work performance and highlighted the indirect impacts of Social QM-practices on innovative performance through innovative work behaviour in Malaysian HEIs. Efforts to improve Social QM-practices especially in promoting leadership for quality management, developing strategic vision, and providing effective educational support, as well as training may facilitate innovative work behaviour and enhance work performance at Malaysian HEIs.

Quality Management in Export of Textile and Garment Manufacturing in Ethiopia

Global competition and economic liberalization, quality has become one of the important factors in achieving competitive advantages. The quality and its continuous advancement have developed a significant meaning for todays' business. Purpose of this study was to examine the impact of Quality Management Practices on Export Performance of Ethiopian Textile and Garment exporters. A five point Likert scale questionnaire was used as the key instrument of data collection and data were obtained from 20 apparel exporters. Eight dimensions were used to measure Quality Management including Leadership, Customer Focus, Engagement of People, Process Approach, Partnership and Resource, Policy and Strategy, Evidence Based Decision Making and Continuous Improvement. The descriptive analysis, correlation and regression analysis were used to examine the impact of Quality Management on Export Performance and the relationship between Quality Management and Export Performance. Results of the study clearly indicated that all dimensions except Partnership and Resource were significantly correlated with Export Performance. In addition, Leadership, Customer Focus, engagement of people and Continuous Improvement were found as the most significant dimensions that impact on export performance.

Unlocking the relationships between strategic planning, leadership and technology transfer competence: the mediating role of strategic quality management

Purpose This study aims to investigate the relationships between firms’ strategic planning (SP), leadership and technology transfer competence (TTC) by specifically incorporating the mediating role of strategic quality management (SQM). Design/methodology/approach This study performs structural equation modeling using AMOS on survey data collected from 200 Turkish firms operating in multiple industries and sectors. Findings This study finds that leadership in Turkish firms operating in multiple sectors is positively associated with SQM. This study further finds that SQM positively influences Turkish firms’ TTC and mediates the roles of SP and leadership in TTC. Research limitations/implications A key research implication from this study relates to the mediating role of SQM in TTC in an emerging economy context. This study highlights that SP and leadership can play an essential role in TTC through the mediating mechanism of SQM. Consequently, SQM emerges as a crucial linking pin in conveying the impact of quality management practices on technology transfer in emerging markets. Practical implications An essential managerial implication of this study relates to the critical roles of leadership, SP and SQM in TTC. For the managers of firms operating in a relatively uncertain emerging context such as Turkey, it is essential to adopt a supportive and empowering leadership style, where open communication and innovative activities are viewed positively and SQM is adopted holistically. Also, SP should be streamlined throughout the firm and followed by SQM to support TTC. Originality/value This paper links the technology (and knowledge) management and the strategy and leadership literature streams by focusing on the mechanisms of technology transfer and delving into the linkages between SQM, leadership, SP and TTC. It specifically presents SP and leadership as precursors to SQM in their joint influence on TTC. Accordingly, this research bridges technology, strategy and leadership research and provides a broader picture of technology transfer that encompasses the joint role of different processes in firms’ TTC.

The impact of quality management practices on manufacturing performance: an empirical study based on system theory

As one important part of core competitiveness of manufacturing enterprises, quality management practices have gradually received more attention. In many existing researches, quality management practices are regarded as a whole or categorized into two or four types of practice elements for discussions. There are less researches on the relationships among specific quality management practice elements and their impacts on manufacturing performance. We collected data by using a structured survey questionnaire, which was finished by top- and middle-level managers from 123 manufacturing enterprises. And then, we analyze quality management practices with the philosophical thinking of system theory and deconstruct the mechanism of the mutual influences and synergies among various quality management practice elements and also their impacts on manufacturing performance, from an overall perspective through empirical research. At last, a model of quality management practice synergies is built, as a theoretical support for manufacturing enterprises implementation of quality management practices.

The impact of quality management practices on knowledge management processes: a study of a social security corporation in Jordan

PurposeThis study aimed to investigate the impact of total quality practices on knowledge management (KM) processes across a Social Security Corporation (SSC) in Jordan and explore the best approach to improve KM processes using quality management.Design/methodology/approachThis study followed a quantitative methodology: a conceptual model was developed based on an extensive review of the related literature; an online survey was developed and distributed using the SSC's intranet; and 384 surveys were completed and used in the statistical analysis. The two-stage approach of structural equation modeling (SEM) was employed to analyze and interpret the data, and was used to validate the conceptual model of this research.FindingsBased on the statistical analysis it was found that six out of seven independent factors relating to quality management practices were confirmed to have a significant impact on the knowledge management processes (KMPs). Building upon the findings an agenda for improving KM processes using quality management is proposed.Originality/valueThis study was conducted in one organization namely the SSC because it is the largest public service organization in Jordan and offers compulsory services. The inclusion of other public organizations and companies may reflect different findings. Future research may collect data from other service industries to get a more comprehensive perspective from developing countries such as Jordan. Moreover, the population of this study included only the General Director, General Director Assistants, and Administrative Managers. Front-line employees were excluded from the data collection because the study was conducted solely from a managerial perspective.

Direct and indirect impact of quality management on the integrated performance of medium-scale manufacturers

PurposeMost studies on small and medium scale enterprises lump both small-scale and medium-scale businesses together as entirely similar phenomenon, thus creating an oversight of the degree of performance recorded by medium-scale businesses. In line with investigating medium-scale firms' performance, this study examines the role of quality management in the performance of medium-scale firms to evolve research-based recommendation for better performance.Design/methodology/approachCross-sectional survey design and random sampling were employed. Analysis was based on 915 responses obtained via questionnaire copy distribution from employees within the supply chain, production, operations, and marketing/sales department of selected firms. Hypotheses testing was done using the structural equation model.FindingsA positive significant relationship between quality management and operational performance, employee performance, and quality performance dimensions was identified. An insignificant relationship between quality management and financial and innovation performance dimensions was discovered. However, when mediated by employee focus and process management, significant relationships were observed among all performance dimensions.Research limitations/implicationsThe study reveals that employee focus and process management have the greatest mediating impact on the relationship between quality management and the organisational performance of medium-scale manufacturing firms. This study charts the course for other studies to investigate the mediating role of quality management practices on the relationship between quality management and the organisational performance of medium-scale firms in other developing nations. The manufacturing sector has thirteen industries, but only six were captured in this study. This poses a limitation to the generalisation of the findings of this study. Further studies could strive for a representation of every manufacturing industry to aid generalisation purposes.Practical implicationsManagers of medium-scale manufacturing firms must understand that it might be impossible to get a one size fits all approach to improving performance dimensions. Managers are advised to choose one or two performance dimensions as the goal, then focus on achieving them. This will help clarify which path is best to get the desired results and maximise their quality management system.Originality/valueThis study examines the impact of quality management practices on an integrated performance model of medium-scale firms. The study also uniquely examines the mediating impact of exclusive quality management practices on the relationship between quality management and an integrated performance model.

The impact of quality management practices on innovation: an empirical research study of Brazilian manufacturing companies

PurposeThe aim of this study is to investigate the effects of soft and hard quality management (QM) practices on innovation performance, considering innovation practices as a contextual variable mediating this relationship.Design/methodology/approachUsing data from 132 Brazilian manufacturing companies, partial least square–structural equation modeling (PLS–SEM) is employed to test if soft and hard QM practices, directly, affect innovation practices and, indirectly, innovation performance. This investigation also aims to identify whether the relationships are maintained regardless of the size of the company.FindingsThe results suggest that soft QM has a positive effect on hard QM. However, only soft QM, not hard QM, has a significant effect on innovation practices. Additionally, soft QM has a significant positive effect on innovation performance through innovation practices. Company size does not influence the relationships.Practical implicationsThe findings can help managers to adjust their managerial practices to enhance the effective impact of QM on innovation performance.Originality/valueThe previous literature presents conflicting results on the relationship between QM and innovation performance. Most studies have proposed a direct relationship between both constructs. This study considers innovation practices as a mediator in this relationship. Furthermore, this paper adds to the scarce literature reporting related studies conducted in developing countries.

A comparative study of quality management practices between Vietnamese and Japanese manufacturing plants

This study aims to investigate impact of quality management practices on operational capabilities in Vietnamese and Japanese manufacturers, and then, compare the impact between two countries. Statistical techniques are applied to analyse data collected from 25 Vietnamese and 22 Japanese manufacturing plants through an international joint research called high performance manufacturing (HPM) - round 4 in 2014-2015. Analytical results indicate positive impact from supplier involvement in quality improvement and process control but negative impact from feedback and continuous improvement and learning on operational capabilities. The impacts of supplier involvement in quality improvement and feedback practices are significantly different between Japanese and Vietnamese manufacturing companies. The results provide empirical evidence on the implementation quality management practices in different countries, and offer some insights into performance improvement in both developed and developing countries.

Impact of Integration between Quality Management Practices and Cost Management Techniques on Improving Financial Performance (A Field Study of Four and Five-Star Hotels in Amman)

The study aims to investigate the impact of integrating quality management practices and cost management techniques on improving financial performance of Amman hotels. A questionnaire was developed and distributed to a sample of (360) managers in financial administrations, quality units, and operational departments in Amman hotels, out of them (224) were valid and suitable for statistical analyses. The results showed that a significant impact of quality management practices and cost management techniques on unfinancial performance. The study recommended hotels to continue integrating quality management practices and cost management techniques to be in line with recent and modern trends of cost management.

The purpose of this paper is to look into the impact of quality management practices on quality performance in a manufacturing firm of a public sector undertaking in India and explore the indirect impact of training and employee suggestion scheme on the relation between quality management practices and quality performance. Data was collected from 235 executives and analysed using partial least square. Results indicate that quality management practices had a positive impact on quality performance. Further analysis revealed that training partially mediates the relation between quality management practices and quality performance whereas employee suggestion scheme did not. Recommendations to ensure better organisational performance through quality management practices suggested.

Impact of quality management practices on change readiness due to new quality implementations

PurposeImplementing new quality initiatives in organizations is challenging, as it requires managers and employees to adjust to new processes, methodologies and even mindsets. The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between quality management (QM) practices and readiness for change due to implementing new quality initiatives such as lean, six sigma and to determine which dimensions of QM are more important to change efficacy and change commitment.Design/methodology/approachThe issues are examined in this study through the analysis of survey data obtained from US textile and apparel industry managers by using factor analysis, stepwise regression to construct path model and structural equation modeling.FindingsThis study identifies change readiness measures which are specific for quality implementations and establishes two constructs, namely, change commitment and change efficacy. The results indicate that as good Employee Relations increase, the level of organizational change commitment increases. If employees are engaged and empowered to provide excellent quality, then it is more likely that they will be committed to change due to implementing future quality initiatives. Moreover, a direct relationship between Customer Relationship Management and change efficacy is found. Companies with a strong customer orientation are more able to implement the quality initiatives that matter to their markets.Originality/valueThis study is unique in investigating the empirical relationship between QM practices and the dimensions of readiness for change due to implementing new quality initiatives via data from various organizations. This study empirically contributes to the QM literature with change readiness antecedents in quality implementation setting.

The impact of quality management practices on performance: an empirical study

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to explore the relationship between quality management (QM) and performance, specifically how the infrastructure and core QM practices affect quality and business performance, in Indian manufacturing organizations.Design/methodology/approachIn this study, the empirical data were drawn from 262 manufacturing organizations in India. The research model was tested using the structural equation modeling technique.FindingsThe findings of the empirical study revealed that infrastructure QM practices have a positive effect on core QM practices and indirectly on quality performance, whereas, core QM practices have a positive effect on quality performance. Also, quality performance has a positive effect on business performance.Research limitations/implicationsThis study considered QM from two dimensions (infrastructure and core quality practices), the study further contributes to the understanding of the different roles played by diverse QM dimensions in determining business performance in terms of increased return on investment, shareholder and stakeholder value.Practical implicationsThe study showed that infrastructure quality practices support the application of core quality practices. Therefore, managers must develop and maintain their organization’s quality system and sufficient resources need to be allocated to both types of practices in order to achieve the superior business performance.Originality/valueThis study considers both total quality management and Six Sigma practices for defining a new set of infrastructure and core QM practices in Indian manufacturing organizations.

Exploratory analysis of the impact of quality management practices in a provider network services mother child health care in a middle-income economy

Health systems in some Latin American experience, at present, important aimed at raising the efficiency, effectiveness and efficiency of its operation reforms. The health sector in Colombia is developing a transformation agenda that will allow increasing the accessibility, quality and efficiency by providers of public and private health services, to achieve meet the demand of the insured and uninsured population and increase quality in care, so that they succeed in improving health indicators. In this sense, the main goal is to ensure access, optimize the use of resources and improve the quality of services provided to the population (Social M. d. 2005).This article aims to present how the level of implementation of quality practices in a network of provision of maternal childcare, has an impact on health outcomes and user satisfaction.The exploratory study focused on the analysis of the implementation of quality models in the process of maternal and childcare network under consideration of the tax regime.For its development the SIPOC methodology that allowed us to characterize the network under study, the Delphi method for carrying out semi-structured interviews to a group of experts, interviews were based on the integration of structure, process and results applied, attributes health networks according to PAHO (Pan American Health Organization), quality models (ISO standards and accreditation) and the guidelines of the National Policy.As a result, the network under study is at a medium level of articulation, indicating that processes are planned and developed in only part of the actors who make it up, the level of implementation of quality practices indicates that 20 lines studied mostly do not have a systemic development, break points in the network service provider, lack of internalization of schemes of measurement and analysis of data, strategic alignment, emerging knowledge management and basic schemes are identified for Continuous improvement.In addition, the service delivery network, lacks information systems containing all the key data of the users, a cornerstone for ensuring the traceability of medical records, maintain operational control of the network, and enable the Ministry of Health found progress in establishing programs within their management plans and the impact on the results on health indicators and user satisfaction.Finally, the discussion of the results, limitations, and future research is proposed.

Impact of quality management practices on performance stimulating growth

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to explore and identify the contextual quality management practices (QMP) and to empirically examine their underlying dimensions and its direct influence or association with performance in context to Indian IT enabled service small- and mid-size enterprises (SMEs). Design/methodology/approach The methodology adopted in this study is sequential exploratory mixed method approach. This study adopts two stage processes of capturing data, first identifying critical QMP/indicators as obtained from review of literature, followed by in-depth interview based on semi-structured questionnaire from sample of 20 select service SMEs. Based on comprehensive compilation of literature as well as through in-depth interview 21 QMP have been identified. Structured instrument has been developed taking measures as identified. The QMP relevant to SMEs have been derived from Kaynak (2003), Samat et al. (2006), Salaheldin (2009), Kim et al. (2012) and Talib et al. (2013b). The research instrument developed was customised and adapted to the background of Indian IT enabled service SMEs. Similarly for measuring quality performance five items have been identified from previous literature. Five-point Likert scale ranging from “5=strongly agree” to “1=strongly disagree” is used to show the agreement of the respondents. Exploratory factor analysis has been deployed to identify underlying dimensions of QMP. Thereafter, linear regression modelling has been done to better understand the relationships between QMP and quality performance. Findings A three-factor solution has been obtained and the individual practices could be reconfigured into three dimensions, namely, organisational management, capacity management and quality documentation and security management (QDSM). The findings reflect that strength of Indian IT enabled service SMEs pertaining to quality implementation lie with customer focus, training and service-level management (SLM). Regression analysis shows that all three factor dimensions are positively influencing quality performance. The predictor score of three factor dimensions clearly reflects that Indian SMEs in service sectors have been focusing more on organisational culture and QDSM. The overall findings resemble very interesting insights which gives indication of unstructured pattern of approach. Keeping in view the pattern of practices it can be predicted that Indian digital SMEs are not practicing continuous improvement. It could be inferred that Indian IT enabled service SMEs approach is non-continuous in nature. Research limitations/implications Further analysis may be needed to measure the construct using confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). The research paper is limited by including only six service sub-sectors which may not be adequate to generalise the results for the entire IT enabled/digital service SMEs within India. The same study can be extended by incorporating more quality management (QM) variables and other contextual factors within the organisation and by involving other service sector SMEs. Future research could be done by incorporating multi-contingency framework and moreover researchers may deploy other sophisticated tools and techniques to investigate how individual QMP are interrelated and its influence on performance by means of linkage research. The conceptual model developed can be validated by incorporating other service sector SMEs by deploying CFA and structural modelling. Practical implications This study could be beneficial to entrepreneurs and managers of start-ups and other service industries towards understanding improvement and changing their implementation approach. The theoretically grounded conceptual framework developed could provide entrepreneurial insights to new service managers and entrepreneurs who can better allocate their scarce resources to build quality and scalability effectively. Originality/value This study adds to the literature in identifying and showing importance of QMP in Indian IT enabled service SMEs. This choice is appropriate for this study as no prior research has been found to be conducted on this particular sector from Indian context, especially from service SMEs point of view. This research contributes in identifying new QMP (i.e. service reporting; content management; SLM and information and security management). Overall, the results of this study contribute towards advancing the understanding of the dimensionality of QM. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this study is the first study being undertaken in context to Indian IT enabled service SMEs and is believed that the study provides valuable knowledge from the perspective of QM issues pertaining to Indian service firms.

The Impact of Quality Management Practices on Innovation in China: The Moderating Effects of Market Turbulence

Do quality management (QM) practices foster or hinder innovation? Attempts have been made to investigate this relationship, but the research has shown inconsistent results. Drawing on a review of related literature, this study proposes a theoretical model and a hypothesis in the Chinese con-text, with the aim of investigating the impact of QM practices on innovation performance. The investigation was made up of 383 questionnaires from nine Chinese provinces and cities. From here, this study further analyses the moderating effects of market turbulence on the relationship be-tween QM practices and innovation performance. The results show that both QM infrastructure practices and core QM practices have a positive effect on innovation performance. Additionally, it is found that market turbulence positively moderates the relationship between the QM infrastructure practices and product innovation performance, but negatively moderates the relationship between core QM practices and process innovation performance. However, market turbulence does not moderate the relationship between infrastructure practices and process innovation performance; also, the moderating effects of core practices and product innovation performance are not significant.

Structural Modeling of Quality Management Practices to Achieve Business Results

The study aims to explore a positive relationship between quality management practices, quality performance and profitability of the firm. First critical quality management practices were identified and classified into categories. Then, a structural model linking these practices, quality performance and profitability factors was proposed and empirically tested. The empirical data were obtained from a questionnaire-based survey of 152 Indian manufacturing companies. After the data collection, the scales were purified, validated, tested for reliability and unidimentionality of scales. The model proves to have a direct effect and positive relationship between quality management practices, quality performance and profitability of the firm. The structural model proposed and tested in this study can by used by researchers for developing quality management theory. This model may offer a flow chart to practitioners for effective quality management implementation. This study is a comprehensive review of the literature to develop factors of critical quality management practices and profitability, and unlike most previous studies, the proposed model is the first to illustrate the significance and direct positive impact of quality management practices on quality performance and profitability in an organization.

Impact of Quality Management Practices on Performance among Manufacturing Firms in Coimbatore District

Quality management is a prime area of concern for manufacturing managers in today's world of cut throat competition. An efficient implementation of quality management practice has got its impact on the performance of the firm. Many a times, implementation is a difficult task as there are a number of areas and factors involved. Firms also find it difficult as the results of implementation are not tangible. During the last three decades a number of new initiatives have emerged in this area, but the underlying principles and variables have not changed much. This study is carried out among manufacturing industries in India to find out the relationship between various quality management practices and the performance of the firm. Seven constructs related to quality management practices are considered for the study. Correlation analysis suggests that quality management practices have a significant positive relationship with the performance. Multiple regression analysis identifies that top management commitment, process management and training has a significant impact on performance.

Impact of quality management practices on quality performance and financial performance: evidence from Indian manufacturing companies

The ‘quality performance–financial performance’ relationship has been significantly studied in managerial literature. However, no definite quantification has been given regarding its type. This study aims to explore the relationship between quality management (QM) practices, quality performance and financial performance of the manufacturing firm. First, critical QM practices have been identified and classified into categories. Then, a structural model linking these practices, quality performance and financial performance factors has been proposed and empirically tested. The empirical data were obtained from a questionnaire-based survey of 152 Indian manufacturing companies. After the data were collected, the scales were purified using loading values and composite reliability. The resultant purified scales were then tested for convergent validity through partial least-square path modelling using Visual PLS software. The result showed a positive relationship between QM practices, quality performance and financial performance. In addition, the result illustrates the direct impact of quality performance on financial performance.
