The impact of precarious employment on the commitment of registered nurses.

To investigate the association between precarious employment and commitment among registered nurses. The nursing profession faces numerous challenges, and precarious employment (PE) has emerged as a significant issue affecting nurses' well-being and professional status. In spring 2023, we conducted a cross-sectional survey involving members of a healthcare workers' trade union in Finland. The study encompassed data from 2,370 registered nurses representing various healthcare sectors nationwide. Regression analysis was used to explore the relationship between PE and nurses' commitment. STROBE guidelines were used to report the study. The modified PE scale demonstrated a good fit. Among the various dimensions of PE, nurses perceived the highest level of precariousness in terms of inadequate training opportunities, followed by unpredictable and nonstandard working hours, low wages, and disempowerment. Vulnerability arising from authoritarian management exhibited the most significant and negative association with nurses' commitment (B=-0.233). The findings of this study underscore that PE is a pressing concern within the nursing profession, and it has a detrimental impact on nurses' commitment. While precariousness in nursing is associated with issues related to empowerment and fair leadership, it appears that conventional challenges related to working hours, typical of the nursing profession, do not significantly affect nurses' commitment. To enhance nurses' commitment, healthcare institutions and managers must actively promote leadership practices that empower and support employees. Also, employees' legal work-related rights have to be respected in organizations. Addressing these aspects can contribute to a more resilient and dedicated nursing workforce.

Experiences of precarious work within higher education institutions: a qualitative evidence synthesis

IntroductionA qualitative evidence synthesis was employed, to identify and synthesize the best evidence on the experiences of precariously employed academics in high education institutions.MethodsThe Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) principles were followed. The identified studies were screened by titles and abstracts (n = 308)-full-text (n = 19), employing these inclusion criteria: studies reporting on precarious employment experiences in higher education; part-time or fixed-term academic positions; qualitative studies between 2010 to 2021. The selected studies were not limited to a particular geographical location. A quality appraisal was conducted. Data were extracted while findings from the included studies (n = 19) were collated using meta-aggregation with the Joanna Briggs Institute Qualitative Assessment and Review Instrument (JBI-QARI). The primary study findings emanated from research conducted across 14 countries both from the northern and southern hemispheres.ResultsNinety-four extracted findings were aggregated into 19 categories and then grouped into five synthesized findings: (1) Precarity is created and perpetuated through structural changes in the global economy and wider higher education landscape; (2) Coping strategies precariously employed academics used to endure precarious employment in higher education; (3) Gendered dimensions shaping employment precarity in academia; (4) Impact of precarious employment on academics; (5) Impact of academic precarity on the university.DiscussionThese precariously employed academics felt overwhelmed, vulnerable, exploited, stressed, anxious, and exhausted with their employment conditions. These circumstances include operating in unstable and insecure employment with no guarantees of permanent employment. The need to reassess policies and practices within higher education institutions is necessary and could offer these precariously employed academics the much-needed support and assistance to combat the effects of precarious employment.

Back to zero? Precarious employment in academia amongst ‘older’ early career researchers, a life-course approach

Despite the diversity of entry points into academia, little research exists examining the experiences and impact of precarious employment at different life stages. Drawing on interviews with 19 academics employed casually or on fixed-term contracts in Australian universities, this paper illustrates how precarious employment is experienced at different life and career stages. Using Foucauldian understandings of power and discourse alongside a life-course sociological approach, we explore how parenthood, relationships and life decisions are shaped by precarious employment in the academy. Discourses around academic ‘pipelines’ and ‘early careers’ obscure the experiences of those entering academia as a second-career; and those in long-term precarious employment. These employment structures have deep personal, professional and financial impacts. By identifying the intersection between precarious employment and life stages, we argue that an understanding of the effects of precarious employment requires further, urgent attention to support the diverse needs of academics.

‘More to prove and more to lose’: race, racism and precarious employment in higher education

Precarious employment is considered a social determinant impacting the health of workers, families and communities. The Academy is known to utilise non-standard employment contracts, coming under widespread criticism from its social partners for exploitative practices. Whilst there is much research suggesting certain groups (e.g. early career researchers, women) are disproportionately affected, less is known about the impact of precarious employment on staff of colour. Utilising a critical race theory framework, the current study attempts to close this knowledge gap by exploring the experiences of staff of colour. Eighteen participants across 10 universities engaged in focus groups, revealing three key themes: systemic racism, job insecurity and lack of career progression. Whilst results supported existing research, limitations of the current study are discussed. Recommendations for future practice include a call for legislators and policymakers to create clearer definitions and to better standardise rights and benefits across standard and non-standard employment practices.

Precarious work among personal support workers in the Greater Toronto Area: a respondent-driven sampling study.

Background:The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the role of personal support workers (PSWs) in health care, as well as their work conditions. Our study aimed to understand the characteristics of the PSW workforce, their work conditions and their job security, as well as to explore the health of PSWs and the impact of precarious employment on their health.Methods:Our community-based participatory action research focused on PSWs in the Greater Toronto Area. We administered an online, cross-sectional survey between June and December 2020 using respondent-driven sampling. Data on sociodemographics, employment precarity, worker empowerment and health status were collected. We assessed the association between precarious employment and health using multivariable logistic regression models.Results:We contacted 739 PSWs, and 664 consented to participate. Overall, 658 (99.1%) completed at least part of the survey. Using data adjusted for our sampling approach, the participants were predominantly Black (76.5%, 95% confidence interval [CI] 68.2%–84.9%), women (90.1%, 95% CI 85.1%–95.1%) and born outside of Canada (97.4%, 95% CI 94.9%–99.9%). Most worked in home care (43.9%, 95% CI 35.2%–52.5%) or long-term care (34.5%, 95% CI 27.4%–42.0%). Although most participants had at least some postsecondary education (unadjusted proportion = 83.4%, n = 529), more than half were considered low income (55.1%, 95% CI 46.3%–63.9%). Most participants were precariously employed (86.5%, 95% CI 80.7%–92.4%) and lacked paid sick days (89.5%, 95% CI 85.8%–93.3%) or extended health benefits (74.1%, 95% CI 66.8%–81.4%). Nearly half of the participants described their health as less than very good (46.7%, 95% CI 37.9%–55.5%). Employment precarity was significantly associated with higher risk of depression (odds ratio 1.02, 95% CI 1.01–1.03).Interpretation:Despite being key members of health care teams, most PSWs were precariously employed with low wages that keep them in poverty; the poor work conditions they faced could be detrimental to their physical and mental health. Equitable strategies are needed to provide decent work conditions for PSWs and to improve their health.

PRECARIZATION AS A PROPERTY OF THE MODERN LABOR MARKET IN UKRAINE UNDER THE CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT SYSTEM DEFORMATION

Abstract. The purpose of the article is to study the peculiarities of precarization as the property of the modern labor market in Ukraine that is spreading under the conditions of imbalance of the country’s employment system; to examine the positive and negative aspects of the impact of precarious employment on the domestic labor market and its regulation in order to preserve the labor potential of the country. The study uses the methods of generalization, comparison, analysis and synthesis — to understand the essence of precarization and the peculiarities of the precariat formation as a special class; secondary analysis of statistical and sociological data — to identify the prerequisites for precarization, positive and negative consequences of precarization for Ukraine; graphical method — for clarity of data and a schematic presentation of the main provisions of the study. This paper considers the essence of the concept of «precarization» and defines the main attributes of precarious employment, among which the most significant are the absence or restriction of the rights of the employee in the workplace, access to social protection mechanisms, guarantees in obtaining a stable, permanent, legal workplace and income, ensuring decent work. It has been proven that in Ukraine the negative consequences of precarization prevail because Ukrainians are mostly forced to become precarians. Indicators of labor precarization in Ukraine have been determined and systematically analyzed. The scientific novelty is the systematization of precarious employment descriptors in the conditions of the labor market deformation in Ukraine. The results of the study can be used in the development of strategic plans for employment of the population, scientifically based monitoring of the implementation of the European Employment Strategy in terms of precarization of the labor market, and also form the basis for further research in this area. Impact of precarious employment on retirement planning for young workers and their parents: the case of Hong Kong

PurposeRetirement protection has been widely debated in Hong Kong over two decades. The debate about the relationship between social insecurity and retirement protection, and provoked consideration of a choice between a rights-based universal retirement system and means-tested protection for senior citizens are still contested. This study aims to explore the understanding and behaviours of young workers regarding retirement planning, their difficulties and worries with the implementation of providing support for their parents' retirement.Design/methodology/approachThis was an exploratory study to target young workers aged 20–34 years to participate. Qualitative data presented in this study were drawn from 16 young workers. Seven were female and nine were male young workers.FindingsThe research found that young workers who have a relatively low level of income, particularly for non-standard workers and the self-employed, both are likely to find difficulties to contribute to their own retirement planning and their parents' retirement with the emerging problems of job insecurity and instability. Young working people in lower socio-classes have further limited choices and control over their own retirement planning, as well as providing support for their parents' retirement that may cause a breach of intergenerational contract.Originality/valueWith the increasing number of young workers with precarious employment or unemployment, this study has contributed to a shift in views regarding intergenerational contracts, particularly in the need to support other generations of family members in a contemporary Hong Kong society.

The impact of precarious employment on the health and wellbeing of UK immigrants: a systematic review

This article synthesises evidence on the experiences of immigrants in the United Kingdom who are engaged in precarious employment and explores the effects of precarious employment on their health and wellbeing. This study reveals that migrants in precarious employment often experience negative health outcomes including injury, anxiety and depression. Stress response theories and risk factors associated with occupational injury help explain how employment specific factors influence health. The study shows that immigrant-related factors like pre-migration experience and concerns around social exclusion mediate precarious employment’s effect on health.

Precarious employment and stress: any differences between objective or subjective measures of stress?

Abstract Background Precarious employment is an emerging social determinant of health and health inequalities. It is known that it has an impact on health and could be a potential stressor. This study aims to examine the association between precarious employment and stress measured in two different ways: subjectively (questionnaire) and objectively (cortisol and its metabolites concentrations in hair, considered biomarkers of chronic stress). Methods Cross-sectional study in a sample of 256 workers of Barcelona, Spain, aged 25-60. We conducted a survey including questions on multidimensional precarious employment assessed by EPRES (Precarious Employment Scale), and perceived stress (measured through the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS)). We also collected hair samples to measure cortisol and metabolites concentrations. The associations between precarious employment and stress were assessed using lineal regression models, stratified by sex and adjusted for age and BMI. Results Preliminary analyses show an association between precarious employment and perceived stress for both men and women (B = 5.4,CI95%:3.8-7.1 and B = 5.4,CI95%:3.2-7.7 respectively). While we did not find significant association between precarious employment and Cortisol, we did in several biomarkers of the Hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis for the case of women: 20α-Dihydrocortisol (B = 2.4;CI95%:0.1-4.6), 20β-Dihydrocortisol (B = 1.6;CI95%:-0.4-2.7) and 11-Dehydrocorticosterone (B = 0.6;CI95%:0.0-1.2). Conclusions This study found evidence of association between precarious employment and stress. The results were more robust when stress is measured by means of subjective self-reports than by objective measures of cortisol metabolites, implying that precarious employment has a clearer impact on wellbeing and mental health than in physical and hormonal responses. Further research is needed to validate and understand differences among outcomes, as well as differences between men and women. Key messages Some evidence of association between precarious employment and stress, measured both by subjective self-reported measures and by objective measures of cortisol metabolites existed. More research is needed to understand the differences between objective and subjective stress on the impact of precarious employment and differences among indicators for men and women.

The impact of precarious employment on the health and wellbeing of immigrants: a systematic review

Abstract Background Migration and precarious employment are social determinants associated with adverse health outcomes. In the United Kingdom, migration policy and labour market characteristics mean that migrants are often engaged in precarious work. We synthesise evidence on the experiences of migrants and explore the effects of precarious employment on their health and wellbeing. Methods Electronic databases were searched for peer-reviewed qualitative studies describing the experiences of United Kingdom migrants in precarious employment. Title and abstracts were screened, followed by full text screening using pre-specified inclusion and exclusion criteria. Data on employment experiences and effects of working conditions on physical and mental health and perceived wellbeing were extracted. The Centre for Reviews and Dissemination (2009) framework was used to conduct a narrative synthesis. Results Out of 1577 unique citations, 5 met our inclusion criteria. All included studies reported negative outcomes on physical and mental health. 2 reported positive or negative outcomes for perceived wellbeing depending on pre-migration experience. Musculoskeletal pain, exhaustion, anxiety and depression were commonly reported effects of precarious employment. Communication difficulties and over qualification were identified as migrant specific factors influencing health outcomes. Conclusions Stress response theories and risk factors associated with occupational injury explain how employment specific factors influence health. Extrinsic factors such as immigration policies, pre-migration experience, responsibilities in home country and acculturation mediate precarious employment effect on health. Key messages Migrants feel isolated in precarious employment and are vulnerable to negative mental and physical health impacts. Broader migration related policies impact on experiences of employment and health.

The article examines the factors of employment precarization, which have a negative impact on the quality of working life of Russian workers, and identifi es their qualitative characteristics. The relevance of the study of this problem is not in doubt, because today the instability of employment is experienced both by employees with informal labor relations, and offi cially formalized workers. The practical signifi cance of the results of this research is to create an information basis for the search for management solutions aimed at reducing the adverse impact of precarious employment on the quality of working life of workers in Russian organizations and increasing the social security of young people. To obtain empirical data, we used methods of content analysis and narrative analysis, which allow us to identify the main unfavorable factors in the work of Russian organizations and make a rating of the worst companies, according to Internet users.

The Impact of Atypical Work in Italy and Russia

The paper aims to analyse the impact of precarious employment in Italy and Russia. Although these two countries differ significantly in a number of respects such as size, economic structure, political and legal systems and culture, there are some similarities which make a comparison possible. Both belong to the continental legal system, both are characterised by formally rigid labour legislation, a large informal sector of the economy, profound regional differences, and a weakened role of trade unions. In recent decades both countries have undertaken a set of reforms in a neoliberal spirit leading to the proliferation of precarious employment. The paper aims to provide a comparison between Italy and Russia from the point of view of the impact of atypical employment on their legal and economic systems, with a particular focus on the different perceptions of atypical work, precariousness and employment security and different regulatory approaches as well as different legal and non-legal mechanisms to adapt to changes perceived as negative shocks. Another question the paper addresses is whether and to what extent flexible work can serve as a stepping stone to permanent high quality employment in these countries. However, considering the ongoing character of the reforms, the impact of many of the legal measures discussed in the paper is still unclear.

Itinerant Foreign Harvest Workers in Australia: The Impact of Precarious Employment on Occupational Safety and Health

AbstractHorticulture work in many high-income economies is increasingly performed by temporary migrant workers from low-wage economies. In Australia, such work is now performed predominantly by international backpackers — young well-educated workers with mostly sound English language skills. These workers are drawn to harvesting work by a government scheme that provides an incentive for completing a specified number of days work in horticulture. This paper examines the health and safety experience of these workers, through focus groups, interviews and an online survey. Notwithstanding their distinctive backgrounds, the harvesting experience of these temporary migrant workers is similar to that of low-skilled migrants working in other high-income countries. Health and safety risks associated with work organisation and payment systems, and a lack of compliance with occupational safety and health legal requirements, are commonplace, but potentially compounded by a sense of invincibility among these young tra...
