Impact of maxillary incisor trauma on child psychology in patients with Class II Div 1 malocclusion in urban population of India

Traumatic injuries to maxillary incisors can occur at any age, but its prevalence is high among children. Earlier studies also suggested that patients with increased overjet and lip incompetence were more prone to have trauma to maxillary incisors. The effect of Traumatic dental injuries is not only physical damage but also psychological damage as aesthetic issues are involved. Measures of oral-health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) provide essential information when assessing the treatment needs of individuals and populations. A total of 300 patients with age group 11-14 years with Class II div 1 malocclsion were included in the study. Patients were further subdivider into three group depending upon the severity of maxillary incisal trauma and no trauma group, further to that the psychological evaluation of all the patients were done using short-form of the Child Perceptions Questionnaire to ascertain the impact of oral health conditions (incisal trauma) on their quality-of-life. Mean functional limitation score was lowest for group 1 and highest with group 3 with 0.46, 0.626 and 4.191.405 respectively. Mean emotional wellbeing score was lowest in group 1 and highest in group 3 with 1.381.14 and 6.101.46 respectively Overall statistically significant differences were found between three groups w.r.t oral symptoms, functional limitation, emotional wellbeing and social wellbeing with p=0.001.Traumatic dental injury to maxillary incisors is associated with significant impairment of functionality and significant psychological implications with overall CPQ index scoring being highest in patients with more severe maxillary incisor trauma.

Elucidating the impact of dental caries, pain and treatment on academic performance in children.

The evidence for the impact of oral health on academic performance is still unclear. To assess the impact of oral health conditions on poor academic performance in schoolchildren by including a range of clinical and self-reported OH measures in a modified cross-sectional study. This study was carried out on schoolchildren aged 12-14 years in Jazan, Saudi Arabia, using a stratified and randomised cluster sampling method. Clinical indices from oral screening and self-reported OH conditions and behaviours and school absence from the self-administered questionnaire were recorded a month before the school examination. Results of passing or failing the examination were obtained after the examination. Statistical associations were examined using bivariate and multiple logistic regressions. The oral health measures were categorised based on the types of conditions and briefly appraised. Measures of dental caries, dental pain, soft tissue problems, oral hygiene, tooth discolouration, tooth mobility and school absence due to dental pain were associated with greater odds of failing the examination (p < .05). Measures of dental treatment and absence due to dental visits were associated with lower odds of failing (p < .05). Dental caries with pain likely explains the poor academic performance of schoolchildren, whereas treatment has a protective effect.

Oral health-related quality of life in children and adolescents with cerebral palsy: paired cross-sectional study.

To evaluate the impact of oral health conditions on the Oral Health-Related Quality of Life (OHRQoL) in children and adolescents with Cerebral Palsy (CP) and compare with children and adolescents without CP. This was a paired cross-sectional study, consisting of 121 children and adolescents with CP and 121 without CP, aged 6 to 14years. Caregivers filled a socioeconomic-demographic and the Parental-Caregiver Perceptions Questionnaire (P-CPQ). Physical examination of the oral cavity assessed the dental caries experience, need for treatment, consequences of untreated dental caries, presence of dental trauma, bruxism and malocclusion. A descriptive analysis and Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney tests (p < 0.05) were performed. Variables with p values ≤ 0.20 in the bivariate analysis were included in the adjusted model analysis. Variables with a p value < 0.05 remained in the final Poisson Regression model. Caries experience had a negative impact on the quality of life of both groups, with and without CP. Presence of gastroesophageal reflux and difficulty to opening the mouth also had a negative impact on the OHRQoL of the group with CP. Children and adolescents with CP suffered a greater negative impact on OHRQoL than individuals without CP. Difficulty in opening the mouth and the presence of GER had a negative effect on the quality of life of individuals with CP, while dental caries had a negative impact on the OHRQoL of children and adolescents of both groups.

Top 100 most-cited oral health-related quality of life papers: Bibliometric analysis.

This study assessed the features of the 100 most-cited papers on oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL). The 100 most-cited OHRQoL papers were collected from Web of Science, adopting a combined keyword search strategy. Google Scholar and Scopus databases were searched to compare citations. The following data were extracted from papers: title of the paper, number of citations, authorship, country, year of publication, title of the journal, study design, sample size, topic and OHRQoL instruments used. Graphical bibliometric networks were created using VOSviewer software. The number of citations of the top 100 most-cited OHRQoL papers ranged from 73 to 949. Fifty-six papers received at least 100 citations and two received more than 400 citations. Most papers were from Canada (23%) and had been published in Community Dentistry and Oral Epidemiology (37%). David Locker was the most-cited author (25 papers; 3,521 citations). The cross-sectional study design was the most common (68%). The impact of oral health conditions on OHRQoL (43%) was the most frequent topic, and the Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP) was the most commonly used OHRQoL instrument (48%). This bibliometric analysis highlighted the characteristics of the 100 most-cited OHRQoL papers, demonstrating that this field is far from saturated. This list of the most-cited articles can provide a reference point to guide oral health research, education and services.

Impact of oral health conditions on the quality of life of quilombola and non-quilombola rural adolescents in the countryside of Bahia, Brazil: a cross-sectional study

BackgroundThis study aimed to estimate the prevalence of negative impacts of oral health conditions on the quality of life of quilombola and non-quilombola rural adolescents and identify associated factors.MethodsThis cross-sectional study was carried out in a rural area in the countryside of Bahia, Brazil, in 2015. Participants were asked to complete the Oral Impacts on Daily Performance Questionnaire. Prevalence and prevalence ratios (PR) were estimated together with their respective 95% confidence intervals. Multiple analysis was conducted using Poisson regression with robust error variance and hierarchical entry of variables.ResultsOf the 390 rural adolescents who took part in the study, 42.8% were quilombolas, and 45.6% of all participants reported a negative impact of their oral health conditions on their quality of life. The most prevalent impact was difficulty eating (32.6%). After adjusted analysis, the following factors were found to be associated with the negative impact of oral health conditions on quality of life: age (PR = 1.04), feeling lonely (PR = 1.42), worst evaluation of oral health (PR = 1.52), need of dental care (PR = 1.33), and occurrence of toothache in the last 6 months (PR = 1.83). Quilombolas and non-quilombolas presented with a different prevalence of discomfort when brushing their teeth and had different factors associated with the negative impact of oral health conditions on their quality of life. Both quilombola and non-quilombola rural adolescents showed a high prevalence of negative impact of oral health conditions on their quality of life.ConclusionsThese results support the need for improved oral healthcare for specific populations like the quilombolas. Furthermore, the results illustrate the importance of incorporating oral healthcare strategies that take into consideration the sociocultural context of adolescents.

Avaliação do impacto das condições de saúde bucal na qualidade de vida de crianças escolares: Estudo exploratório

O presente estudo tem como objetivo avaliar o impacto das condições de saúde bucal na qualidade de vida e fatores associados em escolares de 12 anos de idade. Trata-se de um estudo do tipo transversal, com uma amostra probabilística de 102 crianças, no qual foi avaliada a QVRSB através do Child Perceptions Questionnaire (CPQ11-14) em versão curta (Impact Short Form:16 -ISF:16), avaliando-se, 04 domínios, como a limitação funcional (DLF), sintomas orais (DSO), bem-estar social (DEES) e bem-estar emocional (DBEE), sendo avaliadas também as características sociodemográficas, aspectos preventivos e clínicos em saúde bucal. O escore médio do CPQ11-14 para amostra foi de 25 e as variáveis demográficas e de prevenção em saúde bucal não se mostraram associadas de maneira estatisticamente significante ao o escore médio do CPQ11-14. Dentre as variáveis subjetivas, a dor de origem dentária mostrou-se associada ao escore médio do CPQ11-14, bem como, ao domínio DLF. A necessidade de tratamento odontológico autorreferido mostrou-se associado ao DSO e DLF do CPQ11-14. Entre as condições normativas, apenas a maloclusões mostraram-se associadas ao DBEE do CPQ11-14. As condições normativas pouco influenciaram no QVRSB, por outro lado, as condições subjetivas mostraram-se fortes preditores em relação ao impacto das condições de saúde bucal na qualidade de vida das crianças avaliadas.

Evaluation of the reliability and validity of the Early Childhood Oral Health Impact Scale (ECOHIS) questionnaire translated into Malagasy

The Early Childhood Oral Health Impact Scale (ECOHIS) was developed to assess the impact of oral health conditions on the quality of life of preschool children and theirs families. The ECOHIS was originally developed in English language, translated and validated in several countries but no validated transcultural version of this questionnaire is currently available in Madagascar. The objectives of this cross-cultural study were to translate, validate and analyse the psychometric properties of the Malagasy version of ECOHIS.MethodThe translation followed the forward-backward translation process. The Malagasy version obtained was pre-tested on ten mothers. Then, the questionnaire was administered by interview to 150 parents/guardians of children aged 3 to 5 years old frequenting two nursery schools in the town of Mahajanga to evaluate the reliability and validity of its psychometric characteristics. Reliability was assessed by the test-retest procedure with an interval of 15 days by using the intra-class correlation (ICC). Internal consistency was tested by Cronbach’s alpha coefficient. The validity of construct, discriminant and criterion were evaluated. Construct validity was evaluated by Spearman rank correlation and tested using exploratory factor analysis and partial confirmatory factor analysis. Discriminant validity was tested between groups of children presenting consequences of untreated decayed teeth. Clinical examination was performed using the decayed, missing, filled teeth (dmft) and the pulpal involvement, ulceration, fistula, abscess (pufa) indices for assessing dental caries and consequences of untreated decayed teeth.ResultsThe cultural adaptation showed that the respondents understood the questions. The intraclass correlation coefficient for test retest was 0.91. The internal consistency demonstrated a good reliability of the Malagasy-ECOHIS version with a Cronbach’s alpha coefficient of 0.88. The convergent validity evaluated by Pearson correlation coefficients provided positive and significant correlation values between all the items ranging from 0.26 to 0.72. Significant associations between the ECOHIS scores and the global rating of oral health supported the validity of the construct. Convergent and discriminant validity were obtained by testing the association of ECOHIS scores on the child and family sections with poor parental ratings of their child’s oral health, high caries experience and untreated decayed teeth consequences which were to be statistically significant.ConclusionThe results showed that this Malagasy version of ECOHIS questionnaire has shown good psychometric properties and could be used on Malagasy parents of preschool children to measure the impact of oral health status on the child and family quality of life.

Oral Health-Related Quality of Life Outcomes for Individuals with Disabilities: A Review

Individuals with disabilities experience poor oral health status and poor access to health care services due to many barriers. This can negatively affect their well-being and Quality of Life (QoL). The important benchmark to determine the impact of oral health conditions were clinical examinations using established indices. Relying only on clinical assessments and objective measures lead to the ignorance of patients’ perspectives and subjective aspects of oral health assessments that consequently gave an incomplete picture of patients’ experiences. There are various Oral Health-Related Quality of Life (OHRQoL) tools which can determine or measure patient-reported outcomes to assess the impacts of oral diseases and/or conditions among the general population. This article aims at reviewing the commonly-reported OHRQoL measures among adults and children of the general population. The OHRQoL studies conducted among individuals with disabilities, and findings of existing studies are also covered in this paper.

Impact of oral conditions on the quality of life of incarcerated women in Brazil

Imprisoned women represent a growing population worldwide with important health needs. In this study, we aimed to analyze the impact of oral health conditions on the quality of life of female inmates in a maximum security correctional facility. Participants were examined and answered the OHIP-14 questionnaire. A total of 305 inmates were included in the study. Prevalence of untreated caries was 84%. Worse quality of life was associated with dental caries, dental pain, deep periodontal pocket, prosthetic use, and age. Sociodental indicators should be incorporated into healthcare and health policies in order to promote wellbeing among this vulnerable population.

The relationship between oral-health-related quality of life and general health in an elderly population: A cross-sectional study.

To assess the oral-health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) in a cohort of Irish older patients and explore associations with overall health status. The impact of oral health conditions on older individuals' quality of life may be influenced by patients' general health status. This paper reports a cross-sectional study, which analysed baseline data from patients aged over 60years. Patients were recruited from two different environments, namely Cork University Dental Hospital and St. Finbarr's Hospital, to take part in two research studies. All patients completed the Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-14) and EuroQol-5D (EQ-5D) questionnaires. All patients provided a comprehensive overview of their general medical status. Data from the Quality of Life questionnaires were analysed to check for differences between healthy and frail elders and explore associations between OHRQoL and general health. The patient sample comprised 146 (44.6%) male and 181 (55.4%) female participants, with a mean (SD) age of 73.96 (6.9). Frail patients reported a higher mean OHIP-14 score compared to non-frail patients (P<0.001). Pearson's correlation analysis showed a negative association between OHIP-14 and EQ-5D scores. Regression analysis showed that among frail individuals, better general health corresponded to poorer OHRQoL. In the non-frail cohort, better general health was related to better OHRQoL, although these results were not statistically significant. General health was not significantly associated with the way that patients perceive their oral health within this patient cohort. However, factors such as objective oral health, denture wear and patient's expectations may play a role in this association.

The impact of oral health on quality of life of urban and riverine populations of the Amazon: A multilevel analysis.

Few studies and epidemiological surveys are carried out in populations geographically and culturally isolated, such as rural and riverine communities. Riverine populations represent one of the typical populations of the Amazon region. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of dental caries and periodontal disease on the quality of life of adolescents and young adults from an urban area and from two riverine communities of the Amazon region located at different distances from the urban area. The occurrence of dental caries and periodontal disease was examined through the Decayed, Missing, Filled (DMFT) Index and the Community Periodontal Index (CPI). The impact of oral health conditions on quality of life was examined through the Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-14) questionnaire. The data were collected from 564 individuals (15–25 years old): 212 residents of the urban area of Abaetetuba-Pará-Brazil, were compared to 186 inhabitants of the nearest riverine community (Maracapucu) and 166 of another riverine community (Tucumanduba River) located further from the city. The OHIP-14 was analyzed as a dependent outcome, while dental caries, bleeding, calculus, the presence of periodontal pockets, as well as sex and age were analyzed as independent variables through Poisson analysis in a multilevel model. The worst indicators of OHIP-14 and the highest DMFT scores were found in the riverine populations, especially those from the riverine community farthest from the urban area. Based on the adjusted multivariate model, variables such as the contextual variable (location, RR 1.31), and individual demographic variables (sex and age), DMFT (RR 1.53), and the presence of periodontal pockets (RR 1.15) were significantly related to the OHIP (p<0.001). Our results confirm that dental caries and periodontal disease negatively impact oral health-related quality of life; however, these diseases seem to impact the individuals from remote communities more significantly.

CHANGES IN ORAL-HEALTH IMPACT PROFILE (OHIP) OF IMPLANT SUPPORTED MANDIBULAR PARTIAL OVERDENTURES IN RELATION TO IMPLANT POSITION AND SUPPORT

Background: Complete and partial tooth loss have been reported to have an adverse impact on patient appearance, phonetics, masticatory function, in addition to affecting the patient’s quality of life and general health. Removable partial denture have been the most commonly used treatment option for the replacement of missing teeth, yet it offers disadvantages with regard to retention and stability. The use of dental implants especially in free end saddle cases using the overdenture approach, have improved both retention and stability. The clinical success of implant supported prosthesis have been documented but its impact on the quality of life needs to be investigated. The OHIP-49 was used to determine the impact of oral health conditions on aspects of daily function, social interactions in seven domains. The aim of this clinical trial is to evaluate the changes in the oral health related quality of life of partially edentulous patients in relation to implant position and implant support, by installing two implants in a free end saddle and using an implant supported removable partial overdenture.Materials and Methods: 14 partially edentulous patients of Kennedy class II modification 1 were selected from the outpatient of the Prosthodontics clinic –Cairo University. All patients were ranging from age 45-65 years old. All patients in the study were seeking implant installation with their remaining dentition in good periodontal health to receive a metal framework removable partial denture after all necessary operative procedures carried out. Patients with any contra-indications to implant placement were excluded from the study. All patients have received two implants in the pre-molar and molar regions of free end saddle region. After three month from implant installation, a secondary stage surgery was carried out and the two implants have received a healing abutment. A metal framework partial denture was then fabricated and delivered to all patients, supported by two healing abutments which was considered to be the base line group. After three month from delivery of the metal partial denture all patients were asked to fill the OHIP-49 chart, and then the patients were randomly divided into two groups the first group received a ball attachment at the premolar region, and the second group received a ball attachment at the molar region. The OHIP-49 was translated into Arabic and then filled by both groups after a 3 month follow up. Results: There was no statistically significant difference of the total mean score of the OHIP-49 chart among the three groups of patients; base line group, first group and second group. The base line group have shown a non-significant decrease in the quality of life which was then improved by installation of a ball attachment in the first and second group, having the most non-significant improvement in the second group of patients. There was also a non-statistically significant difference of the seven subscales of the OHIP-49. The functional limitation, and physical pain of the OHIP-49 chart have shown the most improvement in the second group of patients when compared to the rest. Physical disability and Handicap subscales of the OHIP-49 chart were similar for the first and second groups, only the handicap encountering great improvement in the quality of life for base line group than the other two groups. While the Psychological discomfort, Physiological disability and Social disability were similar for all the three groups of patients. Conclusion Implant supported removable partial denture with a ball attachment installed would improve the patient’s quality of life when compared to an implant tooth-tissue removable partial denture supported by healing abutments. There was no statically significant difference in the quality of life total scores with installation of a ball abutment at either the pre-molar or molar region, but a non-significant improvement in the quality of life have been encountered at the ball attachment installed in the molar region.

Negative impact of oral health conditions on oral health related quality of life of community dwelling elders in Mexico city, a population based study.

Oral health in old persons is frequently poor; non-functional prostheses are common and negatively affect quality of life. The objective of this study was to estimate the impact of oral health problems on oral health related quality of life in a sample of home dwelling Mexican elders. Household survey in 655 persons 70 years old and over residing in one county in Mexico City. Oral Health Related Quality of Life (Short version of the Oral Health Impact Profile validated in Mexico-OHIP-14-sp), self-perception of general and oral health, xerostomia, utilization of dental services, utilization and functionality of removable dental prostheses, dental and periodontal conditions, age, gender, marital status, schooling, depression, cognitive impairment and independence in activities of daily living (ADL). A negative binomial regression model was fitted. Mean age was 79.2 ± 7.1 years; 54.2% were women. Mean OHIP-14-Sp score was 6.8 ± 8.7, median was 4. The final model showed that men (RR = 1.30); persons with xerostomia (RR = 1.41); no utilization of removable prostheses (RR = 1.55); utilization of non-functional removable prostheses (RR = 1.69); fair self-perception of general health (RR = 1.34); equal (RR = 1.43) or worse (RR = 2.32) self-perception of oral health compared with persons of the same age; and being dependent for at least one ADL (RR = 1.71) increased the probability of higher scores of the OHIP-14-sp. Age, schooling, depression, cognitive impairment and periodontal conditions showed no association. Oral rehabilitation can improve quality of life, health education and health promotion for the elder and their caregivers may reduce the risk of dental problems. Oral Health Impact among Rural-dwelling Indigenous Adults in South Australia.

The aim of this study was to describe the impact of oral health conditions among a convenience sample of Indigenous Australian adults and compare findings with nationally representative data. Data were obtained from the Indigenous Oral Health Literacy Project (IOHLP) based in South Australia. Nationally representative data were obtained from the National Survey of Adult Oral Health (NSAOH). The impact of oral disease was measured using the shortened form of the oral health impact profile, OHIP-14. All data were standardised by age group and sex utilising Census data. For each OHIP-14 measure the impact was greater for IOHLP participants. There was considerable variation in the degree of difference between IOHLP and NSAOH participants for individual OHIP-14 items. High levels of effects of oral health conditions were reported by rural-dwelling Indigenous adults. This may exacerbate the health and social disadvantage experienced by this marginalised group.

The impact of oral health conditions, socioeconomic status and use of specific substances on quality of life of addicted persons.

BackgroundThe aim of this cross-sectional study was to evaluate the impact of oral health conditions, socioeconomic status and use of specific substances on quality of life of alcohol and drug addicted persons, receiving care at outpatient treatment facilities in Brazil.MethodsA random sample of 262 participants, mean age 37 years, from Psychosocial Care Centers for Alcohol and Drugs (CAPS AD) located in three cities in the state of São Paulo, Brazil, were clinically examined for caries experience (DMFT index) by a calibrated examiner. They were asked to complete a series of questionnaires, including the Alcohol, Smoking and Substance Involvement Screening Test (ASSIST), socioeconomic characteristics, and the World Health Organization Quality of Life assessment (WHOQOL), which were considered the outcome variables of the study. Associations between oral health status, socioeconomic characteristics, substance involvement with WHOQOL were investigated by means of the chi-square test and multiple logistic regression analysis with a level of significance α < 0.05.ResultsThe mean DMF index of the group was 13.0. Subjects with DMFT >14 (OR = 2.25; CI 95% = 1.30-3.89); low-income (OR = 2.41; CI 95% = 1.22-4.77) and users of cocaine/crack (OR = 2.02; CI 95% = 1.15-3.59) were more likely to have poor general quality of life.ConclusionThis study demonstrated that the general quality of life of addicted persons was associated with caries experience, low income and cocaine/crack use.

The influence of normative and subjective oral health status on schoolchildren’s happiness

BackgroundTraditional methods to measure oral health based on clinical standards are limited because they do not consider psychosocial and functional aspects of oral health. It has been recommended that these measures need to be supplemented by data obtained from patients regarding their individual perceptions on oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL). Happiness is a multidimensional construct comprising both emotional and cognitive domains, and has been defined as “the degree to which an individual judges the overall quality of his or her life as a whole favorably”. It has been associated with several health outcomes, including oral health. The aim of this study was to assess the impact of oral health conditions, oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL), and socioeconomic factors on the subjective happiness of Brazilian adolescents.MethodsA cross-sectional study was conducted in 2012 on a representative sample of 12-year-old schoolchildren in Santa Maria-RS, Brazil. The data were collected through dental examinations and structured interviews. The participants underwent an evaluation aimed at detecting dental caries, traumatic dental injuries, malocclusion, and gingival bleeding. They also completed the Brazilian versions of the Child Perceptions Questionnaire-short form (CPQ11–14 – ISF: 16) and the Subjective Happiness Scale (SHS), which was our outcome variable. Socioeconomic conditions were evaluated through a questionnaire that was completed by the participants’ parents. Poisson regression analysis was used to determine the association between the explanatory variables and the outcome. Moreover, a correlation analysis was performed to determine the relationship between the SHS scores and the overall and domain scores of the CPQ11–14 –ISF: 16.ResultsA total of 1,134 children were evaluated. Unadjusted analyses showed that happiness was associated with socioeconomic indicators, the use of dental services, clinical status, and scores on the OHRQoL measure. After adjustment, household overcrowding (RR: 0.96; 95% CI: 0.93-0.98), dental caries (RR: 0.98; 95% CI: 0.97-0.99), malocclusion (RR: 0.98; 95% CI: 0.96-0.99), and the severity associated with the CPQ11-14 (RR: 0.95; 95% CI: 0.93-0.97) still showed a significant association with lower levels of the mean SHS score.ConclusionsHappiness is influenced by oral conditions, socioeconomic status, and OHRQoL.

Impact of oral health conditions on the quality of life of workers.

Occupational health has been the scope of numerous studies, primarily due to the concern that the worker should enjoy good working conditions and a satisfactory quality of life. This study seeks to analyze the impact of oral health on the quality of life of workers at a public university using the simplified version of the Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-14) and associated factors. A cross-sectional study was conducted with 326 workers who responded the questions of OHIP-14 about self-rated health, oral morbidity, and socioeconomic and demographic questions. Multiple linear regression analysis was performed to verify the association between the independent variables and OHIP-14. About 40% of the impact of oral health on quality of life can be explained by the variables: education level (p = 0,03), age (p = 0,03), reason for visiting a dentist (p = 0,01), oral health perception (p < 0,01) and satisfaction with teeth and mouth (p < 0,01). The use of OHIP-14 can be useful for planning programs and actions focused on health education for occupational health, prioritizing workers with greater psychosocial impacts caused by oral problems.

Impact of oral health on physical and psychosocial dimensions: an analysis using structural equation modeling.

This study aimed to estimate the prevalence of impact of oral health conditions on physical and psychosocial dimensions among adolescents and to identify factors associated with severity of impact. The impact of oral health status was assessed by the instrument Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-14). The covariates were: socioeconomic status, habits and health care, use of dental services, and normative conditions of oral health. Structural equation modeling was performed, and 15.6% of adolescents reported impact in at least one dimension of the OHIP-14. The dimensions that showed the highest prevalence of impact were psychological distress (11.8%) and physical pain (6.6%). The number of teeth needing dental treatment, number of filled teeth, and CPI significantly affected severity of impact. In this adolescent population, unfavorable socioeconomic conditions were associated with reduced use of dental services, associated in turn with precarious oral health conditions and increased severity of impact.

Impact of oral health conditions on the quality of life of preschool children and their families: a cross-sectional study.

BackgroundDental caries, traumatic dental injury (TDI) and malocclusion are common oral health conditions among preschool children and can have both physical and psychosocial consequences. Thus, it is important to measure the impact these on the oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) of children. The aim of the present study was to assess the impact of oral health conditions on the OHRQoL of preschool children and their families.MethodsA preschool-based, cross-sectional study was carried out with 843 preschool children in the city of Campina Grande, Brazil. Parents/caregivers answered the Brazilian Early Childhood Oral Health Impact Scale and a questionnaire addressing socio-demographic data as well as the parent’s/caregiver’s perceptions regarding their child’s health. Clinical exams were performed by three researchers who had undergone a calibration process for the diagnosis of dental caries, TDI and malocclusion (K = 0.83-0.85). Hierarchical Poisson regression was employed to determine the strength of associations between oral health conditions and OHRQoL (α = 5%). The multivariate model was run on three levels obeying a hierarchical approach from distal to proximal determinants: 1) socio-demographic data; 2) perceptions of health; and 3) oral health conditions.ResultsThe prevalence of impact from oral health conditions on OHRQoL was 32.1% among the children and 26.2% among the families. The following variables were significantly associated with a impact on OHRQoL among the children: birth order of child (PR = 1.430; 95% CI: 1.045-1.958), parent’s/caregiver’s perception of child’s oral health as poor (PR = 1.732; 95% CI: 1.399-2.145), cavitated lesions (PR = 2.596; 95% CI: 1.982-3.400) and TDI (PR = 1.413; 95% CI: 1.161-1.718). The following variables were significantly associated with a impact on OHRQoL among the families: parent’s/caregiver’s perception of child’s oral health as poor (PR = 2.116; 95% CI: 1.624-2.757), cavitated lesions (PR = 2.809; 95% CI: 2.009-3.926) and type of TDI (PR = 2.448; 95% CI: 1.288-4.653).ConclusionCavitated lesions and TDI exerted a impact on OHRQoL of the preschool children and their families. Parents’/caregivers’ perception of their child’s oral health as poor and the birth order of the child were predictors of a greater impact on OHRQoL.

Quality of life of individuals with cleft lip and palate pre- and post-surgical correction of dentofacial deformity.

To assesses the quality of life and the impact of oral health conditions in the pre- and post-surgical correction of dentofacial deformity of individuals with cleft lip and palate. Quantitative and prospective study in a referral hospital in the period from June 2011 to May 2013. A total of 50 participants responded the questionnaires World Health Organization Quality of Life - Bref (WHOQOL-Bref) and Oral Health Impact Profile - 14 (OHIP-14), approximately 3 days before and 3 to 12 months after surgery. The "t" test for paired samples and Wilcoxon test were used for statistical analysis with a significance level of 5%. After surgery, differences were found in the domains: Physical, Psychological, Environmental and General Questions of the WHOQOL-Bref and domains: Psychological Discomfort, Psychological Disability, Social Disability, Handicap and Overall Score of OHIP-14. Surgical correction of dentofacial deformity improved quality of life and had positive impact of oral health condition. Avaliar a qualidade de vida e o impacto das condições de saúde oral nos períodos pré e pós-correção cirúrgica da deformidade dentofacial de indivíduos com fissura labiopalatina operada. Estudo quantitativo e prospectivo, realizado em um hospital de referência, no período de junho de 2011 a maio de 2013. Participaram 50 indivíduos que responderam aos questionários World Health Organization Quality of Life - Bref (WHOQOL-Bref) e Oral Health Impact Profile - 14 (OHIP-14), aproximadamente 3 dias antes e entre 3 e 12 meses após a cirurgia. Os testes "t" para amostras pareadas e de Wilcoxon foram usados para análise estatística, com nível de significância de 5%. Após a cirurgia, foram encontradas diferenças nos domínios: Físico, Psicológico, Meio Ambiente e nas Questões Gerais do WHOQOL-Bref e nos domínios: Desconforto Psicológico, Limitação Psicológica, Limitação Social, Incapacidade e no Escore Geral do OHIP-14. A correção cirúrgica da deformidade dentofacial propiciou melhora da qualidade de vida e impacto positivo da condição da saúde oral.
