Impact of occupational stress on nursing professionals who provide hospital care

Introduction: One of the factors such as excessive working hours in nursing professionals poses a risk to their professional health, likely affecting the quality and productivity of the service provided. Objective: To determine the impact of job stress on part-time nursing professionals at the Technical University of Ambato. Methodology: A descriptive, non-experimental cross-sectional study was conducted. A survey was administered using the Spanish version of the Nursing Stress Scale (NSS) during July 2023. All part-time nursing staff working at the Technical University of Ambato as clinical instructors (n=50) were included. Data such as age and hospital work service were considered. Full-time nursing staff were excluded. Results: The surveyed nursing professionals predominated in services such as Operating Room 18% (n=9), Emergency 12% (n=6), Neonatology 12% (n=6), and Surgical Hospitalization 10% (n=5), with an average age of 38.6 years (Min 24 - Max 59). Regarding the determination of job stress based on evaluated stressors, scores characterized as "sometimes" predominated with 54% (n=27), followed by "never" with 26% (n=13), "frequently" with 16% (n=8), and finally "very frequently" with 4% (n=2). Conclusion: Stress related to disagreement with a patient's treatment was found to have a significant impact on the job stress of nursing professionals. The moderating effect of work-related musculoskeletal disorders in relation to occupational stress and health-related quality of life of construction workers: a cross-sectional research

BackgroundThis study aimed to investigate work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs), occupational stress, and health-related quality of life (HRQoL); identify the factors that affect HRQoL; and investigate the moderating effects of WMSDs on occupational stress and HRQoL.MethodsThe participants were construction workers who had worked in the construction industry for over three months. A total of 178 construction workers voluntarily participated and anonymously completed the musculoskeletal symptoms questionnaire, the Korean Occupational Stress Scale, short-form 36. The moderation effect of WMSDs on occupational stress and HRQoL were analyzed by Haye’s Process Macro Model.ResultsThe results of the study showed that 96 subjects (53.9%) had WMSDs, and the most common pain site was the lower back (33.3%). The group with WMSDs had higher occupational stress than did the group without WMSDs (p < 0.01). Compared with the group without WMSDs, the group with WMSDs displayed significant differences in HRQoL (p < 0.001). Furthermore, the factor affecting HRQoL was WMSDs (p < 0.001). In the impact of occupational stress on HRQoL, WMSDs had a significant moderating effect (p < 0.001).ConclusionThe results of this study indicate that construction workers’ WMSDs significantly impact occupational stress and HRQoL, and WMSDs have a significant moderating effect on the relationship between occupational stress and HRQoL. Therefore, to improve the HRQoL of workers in the construction industry, it is necessary to develop methods to reduce occupational stress and prevent and treat WMSDs.

The Impact of Occupational Stress on Employees’ Performance and Customer Value Creation: Case of an American Multinational Company Subsidiary in Morocco

This paper intends to determine the extent to which occupational stress impacts individual performance, and whether it affects the customer value creation. The objective is to shine new light on the occupational stress challenges through examining an American multinational company based in Morocco. Therefore, the key question of this study asks the way the occupational stress affects individual performance, and consequently, customer value. A qualitative methodology is adopted and a specific interview guide was developed. The main finding shows a high level of customer value creation is only possible through ensuring a non-stressful working environment, a prerequisite for employees’ performance.

Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction for Nurses: An Integrative Review.

Introduction: The impact of occupational stress on the mental health and well-being of nurses is a growing concern, magnified by the COVID-19 pandemic. Such compromised health is considered an occupational and patient safety risk. Our aim is to critically examine, analyze, and synthesize the evidence regarding MBSR on the perceived stress levels of nurses including overall mental health and well-being. Methods: An integrative review was conducted. Databases included were PubMed, Embase, PsychINFO, CINAHL, and the Cochrane Library. Inclusion criteria were English only, MBSR, and practicing nurses. Results: We identified 833 articles during database searching. After removal of duplicates and two rounds of screening, 15 articles were included in the final analysis. Several themes were derived with 60% of the studies showing a significant effect of MBSR on decreasing stress. Other significant themes were the decrease in burnout and increase in mindfulness. Conclusions: MBSR may be an effective holistic method of improving mental health for nurses during the COVID-19 pandemic. In both the abbreviated and full, 8-week versions of MBSR, the findings indicate the intervention can reduce depression, anxiety, and stress. Future recommendations include larger sample sizes and measurements other than self-reports to promote generalizability.

Relationship Between Posttraumatic Stress Symptoms and Cardiovascular Disease Risk in Firefighters.

The impact of occupational stress on first responders has received increased investigative attention in recent years. However, research specifically targeting firefighters and their unique responses to job related stress remains limited. Although cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk has been recognized in firefighters, behavioral and psychological contributions (e.g., posttraumatic stress) have not been adequately examined. The purpose of this study was to: (1) examine the relationship between posttraumatic stress symptoms and CVD risk in firefighters, (2) assess the effects of service time on the relationship, and (3) increase understanding of the manifestations of stress in this population. Participants were 87 firefighters from Special Operations teams. Self-report measures of posttraumatic stress symptoms, health, and length of service were administered. Data from annual physical examinations provided information regarding CVD risk (weight, height, blood pressure, cholesterol, smoking, physical exercise). Results indicated significant relationships between posttraumatic stress symptomatology and current smoking status, triglyceride levels, and the number of CVD risk factors. Findings suggest that the presence of posttraumatic stress symptoms may influence overall CVD risk and may not be moderated by years of fire service. Implications for behavioral interventions with firefighters are discussed. Suggestions for future research in this area are offered.

Clarifying the role of officer coping on turnover in corrections

ABSTRACT Correctional officers are at high risk of exposure to workplace violence, and many report experiencing severe mental health symptoms, including post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety, and depression. Despite growing concern for these issues, however, we do not yet fully understand the coping mechanisms correctional officers employ to manage work-related stress, or how coping mechanisms affect workplace outcomes. To address these questions, we utilize original survey data about California correctional officers. We draw on the Stress Process Paradigm to model the relationship between exposure to violence and mental health, the impact of occupational stress on the development of coping mechanisms, and whether differential coping mechanism utilization impacts officers’ levels of cynicism and desire to leave corrections. Our findings suggest that emotion-focused coping (e.g. having someone to talk to) is associated with lower intention to leave correctional employment, while the opposite is true for avoidant coping (i.e. alcohol abuse). These insights shed light on the problem of officer turnover and retention, and provide potential direction to policymakers and practitioners seeking to create an effective, healthy workforce.

Impact of Occupational Stress on Job Burnout with the Moderating Role of Psychological Capital and Social Support.

The medical field is quite challenging as employees have to work day and night under extreme pressure and long and irregular working hours. This work pressure and exhaustion lead to occupational stress. Occupational stress, when unaddressed, leads to burnout which severely affects the physical and mental health of females in the medical field. This study investigates the relationship between occupational stress and job burnout on a sample of female medical staff working in the public health sector with the moderating role of psychological capital and social support between the relationship of occupational stress and job burnout. The research comprises a sample of 250 female medical employees that are working in public hospitals of the twin cities of Pakistan Results show that occupational stress causes job burnout, and psychological capital moderates the relation between occupational stress and job burnout. The three dimensions of psychological capital, namely, self-efficacy, resilience, and Hope, moderate the relation while optimism does not moderate the relationship. Results also show that family support acts as a moderator between stress and burnout, but supervisory support does not moderate the relationship. This study highlights that coping strategies help medical health workers in dealing with stress and burnout. In addition, family support plays an essential role in minimizing the stress of female health workers. Therefore, the administration of hospitals should arrange training to enhance the psychological capital of their health workers to keep them stress-free and ultimately efficient in their work.

The Impact of Occupational Stress on Operational Level Employees’ Work-Life Balance in ABC Apparel Company, Sri Lanka

Apparel industry in Sri Lanka can be identified as one of the main industries in the country, and it largely contributes to the economy of the country. The sector employs about 15% of the country's workforce, and the country is recorded as the highest apparel exports per capita nation in the Asian region. ABC Apparel Company is the one of the leading apparel manufacturing and exporting organizations operating globally with a workforce of more than 40,000. It is found that the operational level employees of the organization tend to have a high turnover, and the current status of the key performance indicators of HR is not at a very satisfactory level. The main reason behind the turnover is mostly the inability of the employees to balance their work and life with the excessive workload and working hours and work-related stress, which lead to frequent absenteeism. Thus, this research study was planned to investigate the impact of occupational stress on operational level employees’ work-life balance in ABC Apparel Company in Sri Lanka. The findings of the research analysis indicate that the sample consists of a higher percentage of females, and many are single in the age group of 20 to 30 years with the highest educational level of G.C.E. Advanced Level and with the working experience in between 1 to 3 years. At the same time, the reliability of all the variables is in an accepted level, and the correlation of the variables is also significant. Also, the regression analysis provides the results that there are direct relationships in between the variables of job security and the work life balance and the role conflict and the work life balance, and further there are positive relationship between the work load, role ambiguity and work after hours with the work balance. A Study on Occupational Stress among Nurses in Erode District, Tamil Nadu

Nursing is considered one among the stressful professions. Over workload inadequate felicities, and sometimes the profession itself would be the cause of the stress to the Nurses. The professional stress of the Nurses creates so many adverse effects and creates negative effects to the persons who depend on the Nurses as the Occupational Stress reduces their concentration in medication. These made this study as essential one. Weiman Occupational Stress Scale was used to construct questionnaire to collect the data from Nurses and required statistical tools were used to analyses the relationship of stress causers with demographic factors and the impact of stress on the physical and mental health of the respondents. The results of the study were found that the Nurses were confronting high level of Occupational Stress during the period of Lockdown. The main stressors were over workload, in adequate felicities, fear of getting affected by the Corona virus and inadequate quality time with family. The demographic factors have significant relationship with the causes of Occupational Stress and the impact of Occupational Stress on the physical, emotional and Psychological state of Nurses is also immense. So enough measures have to be taken to moderate the stress level of Nurses as it is required for Nurses themselves and the patients depending them.

The role of vitamin D in the development of cardiac arrhythmias in locomotive drivers

Introduction. Heart rhythm disorders in locomotive drivers are a significant disease that increases the risk of sudden death and thromboembolic complications, including during professional duties. Conditions associated with cardiac arrhythmias in locomotive drivers can create a state for disastrous situations on the railway. Identification of risk factors for heart rhythm disorders and their prevention in locomotive drivers is an important task. The study aimed to study the role of vitamin D in developing cardiac arrhythmias in locomotive drivers. Materials and methods. We recruited the patients in the cardiology department's conditions, JSC "Russian Railways" in Moscow. The study included patients with detected cardiac arrhythmias. We did not have patients with a history of surgical treatment of cardiac arrhythmias with organic myocardial diseases. Namely: ischemic heart disease, myocarditis, congenital and acquired heart defects, cardiomyopathy. Also, scientists did not study patients with somatic disorders, decompensation of chronic diseases, and endocrine and urinary systems. Results. The study revealed a widespread prevalence of low vitamin D levels among locomotive drivers with cardiac arrhythmias. The statistical analysis showed the effect of vitamin D deficiency on cardiac arrhythmias' development with a high risk of sudden death and thromboembolic complications. We revealed the negative impact of occupational stress on the development of cardiac arrhythmias in locomotive drivers. Scientists have found the relationship of vitamin D deficiency with the level of anxiety of drivers. A review of studies on the role of vitamin D deficiency in developing cardiovascular diseases, including cardiac arrhythmias, is presented. The results of the study are consistent with the data of the scientific literature. Conclusions. It is necessary to survey locomotive drivers to identify vitamin D deficiency with the subsequent correction to prevent cardiac arrhythmias.

Understanding the nature and impact of occupational stress on Australian rural aged care workers

This study explored the nature and impact of occupational stress on direct-care workers employed by aged care providers in rural Australia. The Job demands-Resources (JD-R) model of occupational stress provided the theoretical framework to guide this qualitative investigation. A series of four FGs were conducted with direct-care workers (n=23), who reported their job demands, job resources and personal resources. Direct-care workers identified six themes related to job demands: time pressure, physical demands, hindrance demands, an inadequate mix of staff, insufficient training to deal with complex conditions and work schedule demands. Four themes related to job resources were identified: collaboration with colleagues, equipment, opportunities for development and work schedule control. Disposition and self-care were identified as necessary personal resources for aged care workers. While the generic JD-R questionnaire captures many relevant workplace characteristics, further investigations with this work group should also consider the inclusion of items related to shift work, disposition and self-care.

Personal and professional impacts of work-related stress alleviation strategies among child welfare workers in child advocacy center settings

BackgroundHigh levels of occupational stress, burnout, and compassion fatigue have been challenges affecting social workers, organizations, and service users for decades. Studies have historically focused on quantifying these outcomes, missing the opportunity to qualitatively explore the role of cognitive, emotional, and behavioral responses in practitioners’ stress experiences.Study Purpose and Methods.Research is particularly lacking regarding the impact of occupational stress on child welfare workers (CWWs) within Children’s Advocacy Centers (CACs), a population who routinely works with child abuse victims. This study analyzed three open-ended responses from a national online survey examining compassion fatigue in CACs to understand the impact of work-related stress on CWWs. Thematic analysis identified several themes regarding the professional and personal impact of work-related stress, as well as strategies used to alleviate stress. ResultsCWWs in CAC settings are uniquely impacted by occupational stress at both the personal and professional level. CWWs adopt engaging and avoidant coping behaviors to alleviate work-related stress. Conclusion and implicationsThis qualitative study addresses a critical gap in understanding the differences and commonalities among work-related stress and coping responses to environments deemed stressful by CWWs in CACs. Further research is essential for developing effective stress-management approaches for front line providers addressing family violence.

Ayurveda is science of wellness which primarily deals in food and behavioural aspects. Food and psychology has a good relation in Ayurveda. Emotions and psychological state has a very profound role in the proper digestion and metabolism of food. Ayurveda explains different psychological and emotional state of digestion, and establishment of ground rule that we should have food with psychological relaxation without any mental disturbance. As well as impact of occupational stress and weight conscious diet on digestion according to modern medical science is discussed. Ayurveda already have many references in many places of different Samhitas especially in Charak, Sushrut and Astang. They clearly told that we have to follow the rules of Asht-Aharvidhi Visheshayatana and they coded that, food has his own properties which helps to enhance the physical factors as well as mental factors of the body. Balanced food habits complete the both Prayojana of the Ayurveda which is “Swasthasya Swastha Rakshanam and Aturasya Vikara Prashamanm Cha”. Emotional status of the person at the food taking time also plays an important role of its digestion and metabolism in the body. A big question arise here that whether first psychology effect in digestion of food or food affecting the psychology of the person.

Occupational stress and psychological health impact on hypertension of miners in noisy environment in Wulumuqi, China: a case-control study

BackgroundHypertension has been declared as a global public health crisis by the World Health Organization, because of its high prevalence. It affects the health of one billion people worldwide and is directly responsible for the deaths of more than 10 million people per year. The purpose of our research was to explore the influence of occupational stress and psychological health on hypertension of miners who work in a noisy environment and provide decision reference for relevant departments to keep miners’ health.MethodsA case-control study was carried out in this research. The study subjects were divided into case groups and control groups based on whether they had hypertension or not. Effort-Reward Imbalance questionnaire and Self-Reporting Inventory questionnaire were used to investigate the psychological health status and occupational stress of the target population. General information was balanced between case and control groups through propensity score matching method. After propensity score matching, a multifactorial analysis was used to explore the impact of occupational stress and psychological health on hypertension.ResultsAccording to the result of the multivariate analysis, psychological health was hazard to hypertension (t = 5.080, P<0.001) and occupational stress was not a direct risk factor for hypertension (t = 1.760, P = 0.080). The model was statistically significant (χ2 = 20.4, P<0.01).ConclusionsFor miners working in the noisy environment, psychological status was a direct risk factor to hypertension, while occupational stress was an indirect factor.

The Impact of Occupational Stress on Job Burnout Among Bank Employees in Pakistan, With Psychological Capital as a Mediator.

Background: Job burnout is a major issue for workers in the banking sector. Many employees report feeling exhausted and want to leave their jobs due to the extra pressure and workload from their superiors and clients. They also report not being well compensated for their hard work, which they believe they do to provide the best service to their clients.Methods: A cross-sectional study was made in various banks in different cities of Pakistan. An adapted questionnaire, including the effort-reward imbalance scale, psychological capital, and Maslach burnout inventory general survey were used to collect data from 1,778 male and female bank employees.Results: There was a significant and positive relationship between extrinsic effort and over-commitment on the one hand, and emotional exhaustion and depersonalization on the other. It was also found that reward was negatively associated with emotional exhaustion and depersonalization. However, reward had a positive association with personal accomplishment. There was a gender difference in the mediating effect of psychological capital on stress at work and job burnout.Conclusion: Male attitudes to work tend to be motivated by reward and appreciation, whereas females tend to demand a better working environment. To reduce job, burnout suitable interventions could be introduced for bank employees, whilst management support plays an important role in increasing or decreasing stress in employees.
