How negative life events affect mobile phone addiction among college students

Mobile phone addiction, as an unhealthy internet usage habit, has had a significant negative impact on the physical and mental health of college students, especially in this vulnerable group. In view of this, it is necessary to conduct in-depth research on various factors and their mechanisms that affect mobile phone addiction among college students, in order to provide a new perspective and methodology for preventing and intervening in data addiction among college students. In this research context, this study will comprehensively apply quantitative and qualitative research methods to deeply analyze the intrinsic relationship between negative life events, depression, and mobile phone addiction, in order to provide strong scientific basis for solving this problem.This study aims to explore the impact of negative life events on mobile phone addiction among college students and examine the mediating role of depression in this process. A two-year longitudinal study was conducted to conduct three consecutive questionnaire surveys on 5608 college students from a certain university. Research has found a significant positive correlation between negative life events and mobile phone addiction among college students, indicating that college students who experience more negative life events are more likely to develop mobile phone addiction behavior. Further analysis shows that depression plays a partial mediating role between negative life events and mobile phone addiction, that is, negative life events not only directly affect mobile phone addiction, but also indirectly promote the formation of mobile phone addiction by increasing individual depression levels. In addition, the study also found that gender Factors such as BMI and family economic level play important roles in the occurrence of mobile phone addiction.This study found that negative life events affect mobile phone addiction among college students, with depression as a mediating factor. This provides a new perspective for the theory of mobile phone addiction and a scientific basis for intervention. Reducing negative events, lowering depression, and improving self-control can effectively reduce addiction rates and promote the physical and mental health of college students. Future research can expand samples and regions, delve deeper into the mechanisms of action, and explore more intervention strategies.

Association between negative life events through mental health and non-suicidal self-injury with young adults: evidence for sex moderate correlation

BackgroundNon-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) has exhibited an increasing trend in recent years and is now globally recognized as a major public health problem among adolescents and young adults. Negative life events (NLEs) are positively associated with NSSI. We sought to explore (1) whether sex plays a role in the risk of NLEs leading to NSSI and (2) the role played by mental health (MH).MethodsWe adopted a multi-stage cluster sampling method to select college students across four grades from May to June 2022. Generalized linear models were used to evaluate the relationships between NLEs, sex, MH and NSSI, presented as incidence-rate ratios (RRs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs). We examined the complex relationship between these variables using the PROCESS method for moderation analysis.ResultsFollowing the exclusion of data that did not meet the study requirements, data from 3,578 students (mean age: 20.53 [± 1.65] years) were included. Poisson regression results indicate that high-level NLEs (RR = 0.110, 95%CI: 0.047–0.173) are associated with increased NSSI. Furthermore, interaction effects were observed among sex, NLEs and NSSI. MH and sex moderated the relationship between NLEs and NSSI.ConclusionIdentifying risk factors for NSSI is also important when exploring the interaction between NLEs and MH given the potential for NSSI to significantly increase the risk of later psychopathological symptoms and substance abuse problems. In addition, the significance of sex differences in risk factors for NSSI should be determined. This study evaluated how the impact of NLEs on NSSI can be reduced among adolescents from multiple perspectives.

Association of Negative Life Events and Psychological Well-being among Paramedical Staff

Background: Paramedical staff are essential to healthcare services and often encounter negative life events that can influence their psychological well-being. This research aimed to elucidate the connection between negative life events and the psychological well-being of paramedical personnel in Multan City, Punjab, Pakistan.
 Methods: The study utilized a correlational research approach and involved a purposive sample of 196 paramedical staff from multiple medical institutions. The Negative Life Events Scale (Wills et al., 1992) and the Psychological Well-being Scale (Ryff & Keyes, 1995) were used as study instruments. Pearson's correlation coefficient was used to evaluate the relationship between the specified variables.
 Results: The analysis revealed a significant negative relationship between negative life events and psychological well-being (r = -0.48, p < 0.01). Negative life events were found to be a significant predictor of psychological well-being, explaining 23% of the variance in well-being assessments. The paramedical staff who experienced a higher frequency of negative life events reported lower levels of psychological well-being.
 Conclusion: The results of this study shed light on the importance of addressing the negative impact of life events on the psychological well-being of paramedical staff. These findings serve as a call to action for the development of specialized interventions and support structures that can help these healthcare professionals cope with the effects of these events. By proactively addressing these concerns, institutions can create a more supportive environment for staff and improve their overall well-being. These insights have the potential to inform institutional policies, support mechanisms for staff, and future research into mental health considerations in healthcare environments.

Impact of negative life events on adolescent suicide attempts: A moderated mediation analysis

Suicide is a major public health problem among adolescents, and negative life events (NLE) have been considered a significant risk factor for suicide attempts. However, the mediating and moderating processes underlying the relationship between NLE and suicide attempts have remained obscure. We examined both the mediating role of depression and the moderating role of peer support underlying this relationship. The results showed that depression fully mediated the positive relationship between NLE and adolescent suicide attempts. A moderated mediation analysis further revealed that the indirect path from NLE to suicide attempts was moderated by peer support. These findings suggest that the development of depression plays a key role in explaining why adolescents who have experienced NLE are at a greater risk of suicide attempts than those who have not. A healthy peer support system could serve as a buffer to reduce the adverse outcomes resulting from NLE. Overall, the results may contribute to developing an integrative framework of theory and effective interventions.

Association between Negative Life Events and Somatic Symptoms: A Mediation Model through Self-Esteem and Depression.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the serial multiple mediation of self-esteem and depression in the relationship between negative life events and somatic symptoms in Chinese medical students. We recruited a total of 3383 medical students for this study, and used the Patient Health Questionnaire-15 to assess the somatic symptoms of subjects; the Adolescent Self-Rating Life Events Check List to assess negative life events; the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale to assess self-esteem; and the Patient Health Questionnaire for depression. Descriptive analysis and statistical tests were then performed on the collected data. We showed that 39.17% of the medical students had mild somatic symptoms, 24.14% had moderate somatic symptoms, and 5.66% had severe somatic symptoms; we observed significant differences in somatic symptoms among genders, living expenses, and one-child. For negative life events, interpersonal stress was the most important predictor of somatization during the regression analysis. In addition, we observed significance for both the direct and part of the indirect paths from negative life events to somatic symptoms using mediation model analysis. However, we noted that there was no significance for the path through negative life events and self-esteem to somatic symptoms. This study revealed a high prevalence of somatic symptoms among Chinese medical students, and the findings suggested that interventions aimed at reducing somatization in this population should consider the impact of negative life events, particularly those related to interpersonal stress. One potential approach to mitigating the effects of negative life events on somatization is to enhance self-esteem and decrease the level of depression among medical students.

Personal Authenticity as a Predictor of Coping with Stress and Possible Effect of the Stress

The importance of studying the phenomenon of personal authenticity as loyalty to one's true Self is substantiated. Historical and cultural prototypes of this phenomenon are considered. The difference between the Eastern and Western traditions of understanding the true Self is noted: in the East, a person's dialogue with the world was implied, whereas in the West — internal harmony was. Four basic oppositions are proposed to describe authenticity: to have vs to be (adaptation vs meaning); source vs effect vs epiphenomenon; molecular vs molar; internal vs external. The main function of authenticity is identified as monitoring the meaningfulness of life lived by a person in accordance with their unique calling. The contemporary descriptive and operationalized concepts of authenticity are compared; their limitations when transferred to Russian culture are noted. The original agent conception of authenticity is proposed, understood as a person's loyalty to their individuality, the space-time context of their life and life-calling. The status of authenticity in this sense is a trait like sensitivity to situations. The agent conception is supported by the Moscow Authenticity Scale as the main standardized measurement tool. The resource role of authenticity in stress situations of various nature is discussed. Based on the data on the impact of negative life events obtained in various fields of psychology, a hypothetical model of the possible change and genesis of authenticity under the influence of stress is substantiated.

Negative life events and entrepreneurship

We examine the impact of negative life events on the proclivity for entrepreneurship and whether a person’s locus of control (LoC) can help leverage opportunities arising from negative shocks to become entrepreneurial. We employ 19 waves of data from the Household Income Labour Dynamics Australia (HILDA) survey and focus on 10 different negative life events that occurred in the preceding 12 months. We find that each additional negative shock is associated with a 0.4 percentage point increase in the probability of being self-employed. However, when we separate out the 10 negative life events, there is only consistent evidence that two – major worsening in finances and being fired or made redundant – increase the propensity for entrepreneurship. We find weak evidence that being more internal in LoC provides a buffer against negative shocks. Our findings have important implications for developing policies that seek to address the impact of negative shocks.

IMPACT OF NEGATIVE LIFE EVENTS ON SUICIDAL IDEATION AMONG COLLEGE STUDENTS: DISPOSITIONAL OPTIMISM AS A MODERATOR DURING COVID-19

The study intended to find out the impact of negative life events on suicidal ideation and moderating role of dispositional optimism between former and the later, among college students during COVID-19 in Pakistan. Purposive convenience sample of 300 college students (Mean age=18.45 years, SD=1.374) were taken from different colleges of Pakistan and the data was collected through online Google forms survey questionnaires. Negative life events, dispositional optimism and suicidal ideation among college students were examined. Correlation analysis showed that there was a significant positive correlation between negative life events and suicidal ideation (r= .14,*p<.05) and markedly low and negligible positive correlation of dispositional optimism with negative life events and suicidal ideation (r=.11,*p<.05). Regression analysis revealed that negative life events (p<0.05, t=2.34) and dispositional optimism (*p<0.05, t=1.69) have significant positive impact on suicidal ideation. Moderation analysis illustrate that dispositional optimism plays significant (***p<0.001, *p<0.05) moderating role between the relationship of negative life events and suicidal ideation. It was discovered that the study variables revealed a positive correlation. Furthermore, in the times of COVID-19, perceiving adverse life events with a positive thinking and optimistic temperament had a beneficial impact on conceptions of taking one's own life, and positive future expectations had a moderating effect between gloomy life incidents and self-killing thoughts. Suicidal ideation during adolescence: The roles of aggregate genetic liability for suicide attempts and negative life events in the past year.

Suicidal thoughts and behaviors (STB) constitute a central public health concern in adolescence. Previous studies emphasized the difficulty to cope with negative life events during adolescence as a risk factor for STB. Familial and genetic liability has also been documented to explain STB risk. Nevertheless, less is known about aggregate genetic liability and its possible interaction with negative life events. Moreover, information is needed to understand how these factors differently affect STB in boys and girls. We evaluated suicidal ideation at 17 years old and examined the role of aggregate genetic liability, negative life events, and their interaction in a sample of 2,571 adolescents. Aggregate genetic liability was measured using a polygenic score (PGS) for suicide attempts. Negative life events were assessed in the past year and included parental divorce and hospitalizations, death of friends and relatives, bullying, failure-related events, and involvement with drugs. We conducted univariable and multivariable general linear models stratified by sex and evaluated the interactions between PGS and negative life events in subsequent models. Analyses showed that suicidal ideation in boys is associated with failure to achieve something important (estimate = 0.198), bullying (estimate = 0.285), drug use (estimate = 0.325), and parental death (estimate = 0.923). In girls, both aggregate genetic liability (estimate = 0.041) and negative life events (failure at school [estimate = 0.120], failure to achieve something important [estimate = 0.279], drug use [estimate = 0.395], and bullying [estimate = 0.472]) were associated with suicidal ideation. Interaction analyses suggested that PGS interacted with drug use and failures at school, though this would need additional support. These findings represent significant contributions to the fundamental understanding of STB in adolescence, suggesting to monitor the impact of negative life events during adolescence to better prevent suicide risk. Genetic liability is also of importance in girls and might influence the way they respond to environmental threats.

Stability and change in a predictive model of emotional and behavioural problems from early adolescence to middle adulthood

The impact of negative life events, self-esteem, and coping behaviour are considered to be contributing factors in the development of emotional and behavioural problems. Differences in the predictive value of these three factors on emotional and behavioural problems from adolescence to adulthood have not yet been studied. Multiple linear regressions separate for the two sexes were used to assess whether the impact of negative life-events, self-esteem, and coping behaviour predicted emotional and behavioural problems at four discrete measurement points from early adolescence to middle adulthood in a cohort of N = 366 participants from a Swiss longitudinal community study. Mostly irrespective of sex, negative life-events and low self-esteem were significant predictors of internalizing problems, externalizing problems and total problem scores in adolescence as well as in adulthood. The explained variance in the model increased steadily from early adolescence to middle adulthood. While the impact of negative life-events was on the same level across all measurements until adulthood, the contribution of self-esteem increased steadily. There was a significant association, particularly in adolescent males, between avoidant coping and emotional and behavioural problems. The cross-sectional findings from this community study reflect long-term robust patterns in the associations of negative life-events, self-esteem, and avoidant coping with emotional and behavioural problems from adolescence to adulthood. Clinically, the three constructs represent actionable targets for optimizing assessment and intervention strategies across the adolescent life-span.

Psychological Distress Symptoms and Resilience Assets in Adolescents in Residential Care.

Most studies with institutionalised children and adolescents focus on evaluating the impact of negative life events on emotional development. However, few have investigated the relationship between resilience assets and the teenagers’ psychopathological problems. The purpose of the present study was to investigate differences in psychological distress symptoms and in resilience assets in institutionalised and non-institutionalised adolescents. A total of 266 adolescents aged between 12 and 19 years old took part in the study (60.5% female): 125 lived in residential care and 144 resided with their families. Results found a significant and inverse relation between psychopathology and the perception of individual resilience assets, specifically with self-efficacy and self-awareness in the community sample, and with empathy in the institutionalised sample. Overall, and regardless of the age group, adolescents in residential care tend to perceive themselves as significantly less resilient in perceived self-efficacy and empathy, and they report fewer goals and aspirations for the future. The importance of promoting mental health and resilience assets in adolescents, particularly in those in residential care, is discussed. This can be achieved through early interventions that may prevent emotional suffering and deviant life paths, with transgenerational repercussions.

Buffering effect of e-learning on Generation Z undergraduate students: A cross-sectional study during the second COVID-19 lockdown in Italy

Background : The massive adoption of e-learning in academic education during the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic may be beneficial to digitally skilled individuals, such as Generation Z (Gen Z) members. However, some studies have underscored its negative psychological impact on the mental health of the young adults. We aimed to examine the psychological impact of prolonged e-learning on emotional adaptation among undergraduate students. A secondary objective was to identify key components for preventive interventions targeted toward the academic community by investigating the buffering effect of e-leaning on the impact of negative life events experienced during the pandemic. Methods : The participants were 529 Italian undergraduate students aged 18–26 years. We administered measures of personality traits, anxiety symptoms, peritraumatic dissociation, stress, and affinity for e-learning. This study examined emotional adaptation among Gen Z members who were subjected to prolonged academic e-learning during the 2 nd COVID-19 lockdown in Italy. Results : Dysfunctional anxiety was not a major issue among our participants. This is indicative of the adoption of effective anxiety management skills during the pandemic. Nevertheless, the findings also underscored the vulnerability of the Gen Z population. Further, coronavirus anxiety significantly predicted mental health through the mediating effect of personality traits. Conclusions: Therefore, health care professionals should design and implement interventions and programmes that focus on coronavirus anxiety and psychological distress.

Identity transformation of mothers with substance abuse histories during a support group

AbstractWhile previous literature has highlighted the significance of supporting mothers with substance abuse histories to create meaning from past events and reconstruct their self‐identities, empirical evidence on the use of existential–narrative interventions to facilitate the identity transformation of these mothers is generally lacking. This study presents qualitative results from interviews with 10 mothers with a history of substance abuse who participated in a support group in Hong Kong that employed an existential–narrative approach. Thematic analysis of the interviews revealed that before the intervention, participants reported several challenges concerning motherhood and difficulties around narrating their life stories. During the intervention, participants experienced an enhancement of mutual understanding and appreciation, acknowledged the emotional impact of negative life events, and began to reinterpret these events. After the intervention, emergent themes revealed positive changes in self‐perception, strengthened resistance to substance use, improved parent–child relationships and parenting practices, and improved family relationships. Altogether, the findings suggest that interventions adopting an existential–narrative approach may have benefits and implications for helping this population reorganize their self‐perceptions and achieve more positive life outcomes.

Meaning Matters: Self-Perceived Meaning in Life, Its Predictors and Psychological Stressors Associated with the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Past research has found that a perceived meaning in life can act as a protective factor against adverse mental health symptomology, while also providing coping resources to buffer against the impact of negative life events. The current research investigated how the impact of self-perceived meaning in life as well as its predictors interact with stressors and worry related to the COVID-19 pandemic. We collected survey based data (n = 260) from Australian participants during the pandemic, measuring their meaning in life, orientation to differing life goals and COVID-19 related stressors via the impact of events scale. We found that meaning in life predicted less stress and worry associated with COVID-19. We also found that intrinsic based aspirations related positively to meaning in life within this context whereas extrinsic based goals related negatively to it, although these aspirations were not significant in reducing the stressors associated with COVID-19. These results reinforce past findings that meaning in life can effectively buffer against the impact of negative life events such as the COVID-19 pandemic. They also suggest that intrinsic based aspirations centred on relationships and self-acceptance may be an important mechanism in how people choose to pursue life meaning during uncertain life events.

A case study of tri-morbidity

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to highlight the vulnerability of individuals living with tri-morbidity and the complexity of care required to serve this patient group, moreover to consider how a life course approach may assist. Design/methodology/approach This paper uses a case study of a death of a young male adult experiencing homelessness and tri-morbidity in the UK and comparison of the mortality data for homeless adults in the UK with the general population. A synopsis of the mental health and health inclusion guidance for vulnerable adults is used. Findings This paper found the importance of considering a life course approach and the impact of negative life events on individuals living with tri-morbidity and also the role of specialist services to support the complex needs of vulnerable adults including the importance of multi-disciplinary working and holistic care. Research limitations/implications The research implications of this study are to consider how individuals living with tri-morbidity fit in to evidence-based care. Practical implications The practical implication is to consider that those living with tri-morbidity have extra-ordinary lives often with a high concentration of negative life events. Therefore, an extra-ordinary approach to care maybe needed to ensure health inequalities are reduced. Social implications This paper is an important case highlighting health inequalities, specifically mortality, in the homeless population. Originality/value This paper is an original piece of work, with real cases discussed but anonymised according to guidance on reporting death case reports.

Impact of Negative Life Events and Social Support on Nonsuicidal Self-Injury Among Chinese Middle School Students.

The field of nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) is dominated by research conducted with Caucasian majority samples in Western countries such as North America and Europe. Far less NSSI-related research is conducted in non-Western cultures, even though NSSI behavior is a growing issue in China where studies have found that NSSI among youth occurs at a higher prevalence and has an earlier onset as compared to Western studies. Based on the data collected from middle school students in Xi’an, China, this article tries to figure out the predictive factors that are related to adolescents’ NSSI using gender analysis, specially negative life events and social support, and the following conclusions are drawn: (a) There is no significant gender difference in the prevalence of NSSI of middle school students. (b) Negative life events are the risk factors of middle school students’ NSSI engagement. Individuals with higher scores of negative life events are more likely to have NSSI. (c) Social support is a protective factor of middle school students’ NSSI, which has main effect and also as a moderator to NSSI, individuals received more social support are less likely to engage in NSSI.

Dissociative Tendencies Aggregate the Impact of Negative Life Events on Non-Suicidal Self-Injury among Male Juvenile Delinquents

Non-suicidal self-injury is a significant global public health problem during adolescence, nevertheless there is a lack of investigations among juvenile offenders. Our cross-sectional study aimed to investigate the relationship between negative life events and self-harm, including the effects of dissociation and experiential avoidance that accounted for this link in a sample of underaged male offenders (N = 226; Mage = 16.97, SD = 1.31; 23.5% performed self-harm in the past month). Structural equation modeling showed that dissociation can explain the effect of friendship- and romantic relationship-related negative life events on self-harm. Our findings pointed out that dissociative tendencies could reduce intense emotions stemming from negative life events associated with peer relationships, but consequences of such tendencies might be self-harm in a correctional context.

Sensitivity to the Average and Summative Impact of Multiple Events: When “More is More” and When “More is Less”

How people respond to positive and negative events is a basic question in psychology. Most theoretical accounts assume that the detrimental impact of negative life events is cumulative, resulting in a “more is more” effect. A similar assumption of “more is more” is typically used to predict the influence of multiple positive life events, people’s reactions to evaluative stimuli (e.g., an audience), and their judgments of consumer goods. In this article, we present a model that suggests that these conclusions do not capture the full picture of how people respond to multiple positive or negative events. More specifically, the averaging/summation (A/S) model does not predict that the underpinnings of individuals’ responses to positive or negative events always reflect summative affective impact. Rather, individuals’ responses often reflect the average value of events, as well as their summative value. We review research supporting the model’s predictions and discuss alternative theories and interpretations, such as the conservation of resource model, the peak–end rule, mental accounting, distraction, and assimilation/contrast. In addition, we suggest new avenues for research.

The impact of negative life events (NLEs) on spirituality: a qualitative study on the perspectives of Nigerian Catholic women religious in the United States

ABSTRACT Limited studies exist about how negative life events (NLEs) influence spirituality, particularly that of the Nigerian Catholic sisters living in the United States. Twenty sisters were interviewed. Content analysis of transcripts generated four themes. The themes followed a specific pattern of dealing with an adverse life situation, beginning with 1) the basic instant internal reactions to the stressor. 2) Movement from self-absorption toward an expanded view of life through reframing the NLE using spiritual approaches. 3) Outcomes of the process. This research highlights the need for spirituality to be integrated into clinical practice to improve the mental health of individuals.
