Limits to species distributions on tropical mountains shift from high temperature to competition as elevation increases

AbstractSpecies turnover with elevation is a widespread phenomenon and provides valuable information on why and how ecological communities might reorganize as the climate warms. It is commonly assumed that species interactions are more likely to set warm range limits, while physiological tolerances determine cold range limits. However, most studies are from temperate systems and rely on correlations between thermal physiological traits and range limits; little is known about how physiological traits and biotic interactions change simultaneously along continuous thermal gradients. We used a combination of correlational and experimental approaches to investigate communities of Drosophila flies in rainforests of the Australian Wet Tropics, where there is substantial species turnover with elevation. Our experiments quantified individual‐level and population‐level responses to temperature, as well as the impact of interspecific competition under different temperature regimes. Species' distributions were better explained by their performance at extreme temperatures than by their thermal optima. Upper thermal limits varied less among species than lower thermal limits. Nonetheless, these small differences were associated with differences in the centered elevation of distribution. Low‐elevation species were not those with the lowest tolerance to cold, suggesting that cold temperatures were not limiting their abundance at high elevations. Instead, under upland temperature regimes, abundances of these low‐elevation species were reduced by competition with a high‐elevation species, in both short‐ and long‐term competition experiments. Our results demonstrate that high‐elevation species are confined to their current ranges by high temperatures at lower elevations, indicating that their ranges will be highly sensitive to future warming. Counter to expectation, species interactions strongly influenced community composition at cooler, high‐elevation sites. Together, these results raise the possibility that tropical communities differ from better‐studied temperate communities in terms of the relative importance of biotic interactions and abiotic factors in shaping community composition and how the impact of these factors will change as temperatures increase.

Host competence, interspecific competition and vector preference interact to determine the vector-borne infection ecology

Understanding how ecological interactions affect vector-borne disease dynamics is crucial in the context of rapid biodiversity loss and increased emerging vector-borne diseases. Although there have been many studies on the impact of interspecific competition and host competence on disease dynamics, few of them have addressed the case of a vector-borne disease. Using a simple compartment model with two competing host species and one vector, we investigated the combined effects of vector preference, host competence, and interspecific competition on disease risk in a vector-borne system. Our research demonstrated that disease transmission dynamics in multi-host communities are more complex than anticipated. Vector preference and differences in host competence shifted the direction of the effect of competition on community disease risk, yet interspecific competition quantitatively but not qualitatively changed the effect of vector preference on disease risk. Our work also identified the conditions of the dilution effect and amplification effect in frequency-dependent transmission mode, and we discovered that adding vector preference and interspecific competition into a simple two-host-one-vector model altered the outcomes of how increasing species richness affects disease risk. Our work explains some of the variation in outcomes in previous empirical and theoretical studies on the dilution effect.

UAV Mapping of the Chlorophyll Content in a Tidal Flat Wetland Using a Combination of Spectral and Frequency Indices

The chlorophyll content of leaves is an important indicator of plant environmental stress, photosynthetic capacity, and is widely used to diagnose the growth and health status of vegetation. Traditional chlorophyll content inversion is based on the vegetation index under pure species, which rarely considers the impact of interspecific competition and species mixture on the inversion accuracy. To solve these limitations, the harmonic analysis (HA) and the Hilbert–Huang transform (HHT) were introduced to obtain the frequency index, which were combined with spectral index as the input parameters to estimate chlorophyll content based on the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) image. The research results indicated that: (1) Based on a comparison of the model accuracy for three different types of indices in the same period, the estimation accuracy of the pure spectral index was the lowest, followed by that of the frequency index, whereas the mixed index estimation effect was the best. (2) The estimation accuracy in November was lower than that in other months; the pure spectral index coefficient of determination (R2) was only 0.5208, and the root–mean–square error (RMSE) was 4.2144. The estimation effect in September was the best. The model R2 under the mixed index reached 0.8283, and the RMSE was 2.0907. (3) The canopy chlorophyll content (CCC) estimation under the frequency domain index was generally better than that of the pure spectral index, indicating that the frequency information was more sensitive to subtle differences in the spectrum of mixed vegetation. These research results show that the combination of spectral and frequency information can effectively improve the mapping accuracy of the chlorophyll content, and provid a theoretical basis and technology for monitoring the chlorophyll content of mixed vegetation in wetlands.

Interspecific competition by non-exoelectrogenic Citrobacter freundii An1 boosts bioelectricity generation of exoelectrogenic Shewanella oneidensis MR-1

The performance of bioelectrochemical systems (BESs) is significantly influenced by metabolic interactions within a particular microbial community. Although some studies show that interspecific metabolic cooperation benefits BESs performance, the effect of interspecific substrate competition on BESs performance has not yet been discussed. Herein, the impact of interspecific competition is investigated by monitoring the extracellular electron transfer of exoelectrogenic Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 and non-exoelectrogenic Citrobacter freundii An1 alone and simultaneously. The bacterial consortia generate the highest current of 38.4 μA cm−2, 6 times of that produced by the single strain S. oneidensis MR-1. Though S. oneidensis MR-1 loses out to C. freundii An1 in solution, the competition enhances the metabolic activity of S. oneidensis MR-1 on electrode, which facilitates the biofilm formation and therefore helps S. oneidensis MR-1 to gain an competitive advantage over C. freundii An1. Increased metabolic activity triggers more electrons generation and flavin secretion of S. oneidensis MR-1 which contributes to its excellent exoelectrogenic capacity. The proteomics analysis confirms that the expression of proteins related to lactate metabolism, biofilm formation, and outer membrane c-type cytochromes are significantly upregulated in S. oneidensis MR-1 from bacterial consortia.

Contrasting impacts of competition on ecological and social trait evolution in songbirds.

Competition between closely related species has long been viewed as a powerful selective force that drives trait diversification, thereby generating phenotypic diversity over macroevolutionary timescales. However, although the impact of interspecific competition has been documented in a handful of iconic insular radiations, most previous studies have focused on traits involved in resource use, and few have examined the role of competition across large, continental radiations. Thus, the extent to which broad-scale patterns of phenotypic diversity are shaped by competition remain largely unclear, particularly for social traits. Here, we estimate the effect of competition between interacting lineages by applying new phylogenetic models that account for such interactions to an exceptionally complete dataset of resource-use traits and social signaling traits for the entire radiation of tanagers (Aves, Thraupidae), the largest family of songbirds. We find that interspecific competition strongly influences the evolution of traits involved in resource use, with a weaker effect on plumage signals, and very little effect on song. Our results provide compelling evidence that interspecific exploitative competition contributes to ecological trait diversification among coexisting species, even in a large continental radiation. In comparison, signal traits mediating mate choice and social competition seem to diversify under different evolutionary models, including rapid diversification in the allopatric stage of speciation.

Impact of interspecific competition and drought on the allocation of new assimilates in trees.

In trees, the interplay between reduced carbon assimilation and the inability to transport carbohydrates to the sites of demand under drought might be one of the mechanisms leading to carbon starvation. However, we largely lack knowledge on how drought effects on new assimilate allocation differ between species with different drought sensitivities and how these effects are modified by interspecific competition. We assessed the fate of (13) C labelled assimilates in above- and belowground plant organs and in root/rhizosphere respired CO2 in saplings of drought-tolerant Norway maple (Acer platanoides) and drought-sensitive European beech (Fagus sylvatica) exposed to moderate drought, either in mono- or mixed culture. While drought reduced stomatal conductance and photosynthesis rates in both species, both maintained assimilate transport belowground. Beech even allocated more new assimilate to the roots under moderate drought compared to non-limited water supply conditions, and this pattern was even more pronounced under interspecific competition. Even though maple was a superior competitor compared to beech under non-limited soil water conditions, as indicated by the changes in above- and belowground biomass of both species in the interspecific competition treatments, we can state that beech was still able to efficiently allocate new assimilate belowground under combined drought and interspecific competition. This might be seen as a strategy to maintain root osmotic potential and to prioritise root functioning. Our results thus show that beech tolerates moderate drought stress plus competition without losing its ability to supply belowground tissues. It remains to be explored in future work if this strategy is also valid during long-term drought exposure.

Interactive Effects of Nitrogen and Water Addition on Competitive Hierarchies Between Early- and Late- Successional Plant Species

Increased nitrogen (N) and water availability, resulting from global changes or ecosystem management, were predicted to promote plant productivity and change community composition through shifts in competition hierarchies. So far, however, it still remains unclear how competitive interactions respond to N and water additions, which will be important to understand how plant community composition changes. To test plant competition ability in different successional stages under N and water addition treatments, a pot experiment under field conditions was performed. Six dominant plant species, three early-successional species, Artemisia lavandulaefolia, Artemisia capillaris, and Pennisetum centrasiaticum versus three late-successional species, Stipa krylovii, Leymus chinensis, and Artemisia frigida, were grown in monocultures and in twospecies mixtures under factorial combinations of N and water addition treatments. We found that (1) there were interactive effects of N addition, water addition and interspecific competition on plant biomass; (2) For a given species, competitive abilities were correlated with biomass difference of neighboring species; (3) N and water additions interactively increased competition intensity and shifted species competitive hierarchies; (4) Late-successional species had stronger competitive abilities in the N addition treatment, whereas early-successional species had stronger competitive abilities after water addition or N water addition. Our results show that N and water additions increased the intensity and impact of interspecific competition on plant growth, which has great implications for community structures. Since interspecific differences in competitive abilities were not well explained by species biomass, species identity, such as plant functional traits, should be included to predict the impact of increased N and water availability on plant communities and ecosystem functions.

The impact of interspecific competition on lineage evolution and a rapid peak shift by interdemic genetic mixing in experimental bacterial populations

Epistatic interactions between genes in the genome constrain the accessible evolutionary paths of lineages. Two factors involving epistasis that can affect the evolutionary path and fate of lineages were investigated. The first factor concerns the impact of competition with another species lineage that has different epistatic constraints. Five enteric bacterial populations were evolved by point mutation in medium containing a single limiting resource. Single-species and two-species cultures were used to determine whether different asexual lineages have different capacities for producing variants due to epistatic constraints, and whether their survival is determined by local inter-lineage competition with different species. Local inter-lineage competition quickly resulted in one successful lineage, with another lineage becoming extinct before finding a higher peak. The second factor concerns a peak-shifting process, and whether the sexual recombination between different demes can cause peak shifts was investigated. An Escherichia coli population consisting of a male (Hfr) and female strain (F−) was evolved in a single limiting resource and compared to evolving populations containing the male or female strain alone. The E. coli sexual lineage was successful due to its ability to escape lower peaks and reach a higher peak, not because of a rapid approach to the nearest local peak the male or female asexual lineage could reach. The data in this study demonstrate that lineage survivability can be determined by the ability to produce beneficial mutations and checked by local competition between lineages of different species. Interspecific competition may prevent a population from evolving through crossing fitness valleys or adaptive ridges if it requires many generations to achieve peak shifts. The data also show that genomic recombination between different conspecific lineages can rapidly carry the combined lineage to a higher peak.

Impact of interspecific competition by compatriot aquatic weeds on water hyacinth Eichhornia crassipes (Martius) Solms growth and development in the Kagera River

The phenotype of a plant is strongly influenced by the presence of neighbouring plants often resulting into change in growth and development. We have demonstrated to our knowledge for the first time, the influence of three aquatic weed species (Commelina sp., Justicia sp. and Vossia cupsidata) on growth and development of water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes). We found that Commelina sp., Justicia sp. and V. cupsidata significantly (P < 0.001) suppressed water hyacinth total fresh weight when growing together both in the Kagera River and greenhouse. Justicia sp. gave the highest (51%) water hyacinth fresh weight reduction when compared to fresh weight in pure stand probably due to competition effect. In the Kagera River but not greenhouse, water hyacinth plants were significantly taller (F (4,1371) = 150.53, P < 0.001) in pure stands than when growing in mixtures. V. cupsidata strongly suppressed water hyacinth plant height although water hyacinth compensated by producing elevated number of ramets (daughter plants). In greenhouse environment, the number of ramets per plant was higher in mixtures than in pure water hyacinth treatment. Correlation analysis revealed a strong significant negative relationship between plant height and number of ramets. Competition for space and resources was suggested to be the major influential factor as water hyacinth in pure stands tended to have higher density and total biomass per unit area than when grown in mixtures. Analysis of water hyacinth ratios to other aquatic weeds showed a significant effect on water hyacinth growth and development in terms of fresh weight, plant height, leaves per plant and ramets. These data show that neighbouring aquatic weeds are important component in the regulation of water hyacinth growth and development in the aquatic ecosystem. Kleptoparasitism of a Red-Cockaded Woodpecker (Picoides borealis) Nest Cavity by a Red-Bellied Woodpecker (Melanerpes carolinus)

Abstract We report the kleptoparasitism of a Picoides borealis (Red-cockaded Woodpecker) cavity by a Melanerpes carolinus (Red-bellied Woodpecker). We believe this is the first video documenting kleptoparasitism of a Red-cockaded Woodpecker nest by a male Red-bellied Woodpecker in which both a nestling and an attending adult Red-cockaded Woodpecker adult were forcibly ejected. The Red-bellied Woodpecker was resolute in its attempt to usurp the nest, reaching into the cavity over 2000 times in an attempt to evict the cavity occupants. The male Red-bellied Woodpecker and his mate took over the cavity soon after. Adult Red-cockaded Woodpeckers continued to visit their nest cavity during diurnal hours for 2 days post-kleptoparasitism. It is important that resource managers incorporate proactive management techniques to lessen the impact of interspecific competition for cavities, especially in smaller or fragmented Red-cockaded Woodpecker populations.

The Growth of Brown Trout (Salmo trutta fario L.) in Different Climatic Regions of Lithuania

The growth rate of brown trout (Salmo trutta fario L.) varies across its distribution range, as well as in the rivers of three different Lithuanian climatic regions. Interspecific and intraspecific competition that is closely related even to minor climatic differences is considered to be one of the major factors determining differences in trout growth. The highest significant (p < 0.05) growth rate was found in juvenile trout at the age 0+ and 1+ in the rivers with the lowest species richness, whereas the growth rate in trout at the age 2+ and over was highest in the rivers with the highest species richness. No statistically significant correlation between trout size and density in different age groups was found in the investigated climatic regions of Lithuania, spare environmental capacity probably plays the major role here. However, significant differences in different age groups were observed in trout size and species richness, which attests to the impact of interspecific competition on trout growth.

Analysis of interspecific competition in perennial plants using Life Table Response Experiments

The impact of interspecific competition is usually measured by its effect upon plant growth, neglecting impacts upon other stages of the life cycle such as fecundity which have a direct influence upon individual fitness and the asymptotic population growth rate of a population (λ). We used parameterized matrix models for three perennial plant species grown with and without interspecific competition to illustrate how the methodology of Life Table Response Experiments (LTRE) can be used to link any change in population dynamics to changes in any part of the life cycle. Plants were herbaceous grassland species grown for two years in a field experiment at Rothamsted Experimental Station, England. Interspecific competition reduced λ by over 90% in all species. Survival and growth were slightly affected by competition whereas plant fecundity was greatly reduced. Nearly all of the observed difference in λ between the competition treatments was explained by the fecundity terms, and more precisely by a large difference in the number of seeds, and a high sensitivity of λ to the germination rate. Whereas most competition studies focus on the measurement of change in individual fitness, our study illustrates how informative it is to take account not only of the effect of competition upon vital rates but also of how different vital rates affect population growth rate.
