Impact of Front Line Demonstrations on Yield Enhancement of Ginger (var. Nadia) Raised Single Node Seedlings through Pro Tray Technology in Tribal Area of Alluri Sitaramraju District of Andhra Pradesh, India

To overcome the problems of high seed usage due to the high cost of seed material and rhizome rot disease in ginger in tribal agency areas of ASR district. Hence, the ICAR-ANGRAU, Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Kondempudi conducted Front Line Demonstrations (FLD) in five selected villages, namely Paderu, Peddabayalu, Hukumpeta, Dumbriguda, and Araku mandals of Alluri Sitaramraju district (ASR) of Andhra Pradesh, for three years (2019–20, 2020–21, and 2021-22). The purpose of the FLD was to showcase the superior performance of single node raised seedlings of the ginger variety Nadia raised through portray technology compared to the normal farmer practice variety Nadia. The single-node ginger (Var.Nadia) seedlings cultivated using technological demonstration of yield and economic analysis in contrast to farmers' practices 50 farmers participated actively in the FLD, which covered 20.5 acres. In terms of production, pooled fresh rhizome yields of 139.57 and 120.02 q/ha, respectively, showed that single-node grown seedlings of ginger var. Nadia raised by modern technology were superior over farmer practice. Single-node ginger (var. Nadia) seedlings grown by this technique exhibited an upsurge in fresh rhizome output from 10.28 to 20.39 percent over the course of the demonstration years. Average cost-benefit ratios for the three years for demonstration plots and farmer practice were 1:3.18, 1:3.26, and 1:3.61, and 1:2.09, 1:2.08, and 1:2.01, respectively. The extension gap of three years (2019–20, 2020–21, and 2021–22) was 27.71, 16.1, and 14.84 q/ha in demonstration plots, respectively. Results on the Technology Index ranged between 12.07 to 6.62% and 20.78 to 5.17% for single-node ginger (var.Nadia) seedlings raised through pro tray technology and farmers’ practices, respectively. All three years of study revealed that for single-node ginger (var.Nadia) seedlings raised through portray technology, there is much significance and scope for up scaling the demonstrated technology in tribal agency areas of Alluri Sitaramraj district, Andhra Pradesh.

The objective of the present investigation was to assess the performance of two hybrid rice varieties namely, JRH-5 and JRH-19 under irrigated ecosystem by conducting Frontline demonstrations (FLDs) in three consecutive kharif seasons of the year 2016, 2017, and 2018, in the farmer's fields located in the agro climatic zone of the Chhattisgarh plains. The FLDs were carried out using scientific package and practices of rice. The yield and economic data of the plots compared with the existing farmer practices and variety-MTU-1010 revealed that the FLDs with hybrid rice varieties JRH-19 and JRH-5 performed better. With the enhanced production technologies in FLDs with JRH-5 and JRH-19 and with only an additional input cost of Rs. 2742/ha, the mean grain yield increased by 28.21% over current farmer practices. The average extension gap (12.27 q/ha) and average IBCR (6.14) were high enough to encourage farmers to use the introduced rice production technology with the hybrids JRH-5 and JRH-19.

Krishi Vigyan Kendra, South Tripura undertaken number of front line demonstration (FLD) to impart knowledge on different improved scientific technologies of non-traditional oilseeds and pulses crops like groundnut, lentil, red gram (arhar) and green gram (moong) during Kharif and Rabi season of 2009-10. To demonstrate the technology, six villages of South Tripura district of Tripura state were selected after assessment of the village through PRA method. Awareness programme were conducted in all villages. Farmers were trained on scientific cultivation practices of groundnut, lentil, red gram (Arhar) and green gram (Moong). Besides imparting training, printed leaflets on oilseed and pulses were distributed among the farmers. Field day programme was also conducted in the farmer’s field during field demonstration. Altogether 8 hectare area of oilseed and 5 ha area of pulses was covered under this programme. Improved varieties of groundnut (GG-20, GG-7 and TG-37A), lentil (WBL-58), green gram (HUM-16) and red gram (UPAS-120) were distributed among the farmers. Under this programme, most of the farmers obtained better yield of pulses and oilseeds as compared to local varieties and traditional method of cultivation. The yield percentage increased from 21.43 to 40 per cent in case of pulses, and 30.43 to 65.45 per cent in oilseed crops. Farmers earned up to Rs.31,100/ha by selling oilseed and up to Rs. 29,250/ha by selling pulses crops. The programme conducted by KVK, South Tripura succeeded to build the skills of farmers for expansion of pulses and oilseeds crops through number of knowledge management practices like group meetings, awareness programmes, trainings, demonstrations, field day, etc. Farmers of the neighbouring villages also participated in this programme and expressed their willingness to take up such crops under scientific methods in the next crop season.

In South Tripura district groundnut is grown in very small pocket using local varieties. In general, farmers do not follow scientific package of practices and not using the improved variety due to which the productivity of groundnut is only 1200 kg/ha. With a view to increase the productivity level of groundnut in the district total 80 numbers of demonstration has been taken covering 17 ha area in six selected villages during Kharif and Rabi season of 2011and 2012 by KVK, South Tripura. The objective of the FLD on groundnut was to demonstrate the potential of improved varieties and technologies to the farmers. Awareness programme and training on scientific cultivation practices of groundnut was conducted before starting the demonstration programme. Besides imparting training, printed leaflets on groundnut were distributed among the farmers for their ready reference. Field day programme was also conducted in the farmer’s field in standing crop. Improved variety of groundnut viz. GG-7 and GG- 20 were demonstrated for obtaining higher yield as compared to local varieties and traditional method of cultivation. Increase in yield percentage varies from 26.83 to 50.43% for both the varieties over the local check. Farmers earned upto Rs. 38550/- for both the varieties by selling the groundnut in the local market.

Impact of Frontline Demonstrations on yield of soybean under rainfed condition in Marathwada region of Maharashtra

The frontline demonstrations of soybean were conducted by AICRP on soybean, VNMKV, Parbhani during the kharif season 2019-20 under the guidance of IISR, Indore by adopting new cultivars of Soybean viz., MAUS 162, MAUS 158 and MAUS 612 along with applying improved package of practice verses farmers practice in soybean cultivation. The productivity and economic returns of soybean in improved technologies (IT) were calculated and compared with the farmer’s practices (FP). Findings of this experiment indicated that different cultivars of soybean recorded higher gross returns, net return and benefit cost ratio in improved technologies as compared to the plots where farmers using traditional practices in their cultivation. The average soybean yield in FLD plot was 24.30 per cent (Range: 23.52 to 25.22 %) higher than the framers practice field. It is suggested thatlocation-specific improved production technology with improved variety would be needed to bridge the productivity gap of soybean in Marathwada region of Maharashtra.

The present investigation on red gram was conducted in different villages of Nalgonda and Yadadri Bhuvanagiri district of Telangana state during the kharif season (June-January) of 2018-19, 2019-20, and 2020-21 respectively. Total of 30 demonstrations was organized in farmer’s fields in the districts during the study period. The main objective of frontline demonstration is to increase the productivity, economics of red gram and to decrease the yield gap. Results revealed that the average red gram yield registered under the demonstration plot was 1517 kg ha-1 in comparison to 1397 kg ha-1 under farmer’s practice field with a percentage increase of 8.59. During the study period the average gross returns (86833 Rs ha-1), net returns (56145 Rs ha-1) and B: C ratio (2.83:1.0) was more in demonstration plot when compared to farmers practice (79945 Rs ha-1 gross returns, 48953 Rs ha-1 net returns and 2.59:1.0 B: C ratio respectively). Further, there was average increase of additional returns of Rs 12904 ha-1, Rs 1635 ha-1 and Rs 7036 ha-1 recorded in demonstrated technology during 2018-19, 2019-20 and 2020-21 respectively. Regarding the yield gap analysis, average extension gap of 120 kg ha-1, technology gap of 483 kg ha-1 and technology index of 24.15% was recorded. By adopting innovative approaches like large scale demonstrations, real demonstrations, the extension gap and technology gap could be reduced further for different farming systems to attain self-sufficiency in pulses thereby increase in farmers’ income.

A study was carried out during Kharif, 2019 to assess the impact of Frontline Demonstrations (FLDs) on productivity and profitability of rice crop in Jaunpur district of Uttar Pradesh. The FLDs were conducted by the ICAR-Indian Agricultural Research Institute, Regional Station Pusa, Samastipur, Bihar, under the IARI-Outreach Programme to know the yield gap, technology gap, extension gap, economic return, extent of farmer’s satisfaction, and constraints faced by the farmers, especially paddy growers. The critical inputs were identified in existing production technology through personal interaction, group meetings, and discussions with farmers and scientists. Improved variety, soil testing, seed treatment, integrated nutrient management, weed management, and pest and disease management are among the improved technologies. The result showed that switching from traditional farming methods to more advanced production technologies can result in yields of 30.00 percent and net returns of 27.00 percent. The extension gap of 1.20 t/ha, technological gap (0.55 t/ha), and technology index (9.57%) were registered for the Pusa Sugandha-5 variety. An additional returns of ₹16884.33/ha was obtained with an additional investment of ₹8395.67/ha, coupled with scientific monitoring of demonstrations and the use of rice varieties during investigations, which also influenced the economic returns per unit area. The constraint that was found to be the most difficult to overcome was the lack of improved, high-yielding rice varieties. In order to increase their yield and increase the production and productivity of rice in Uttar Pradesh, farmers in the area are advised to adopt new rice varieties as well as a recommended improved package of practices and technologies.

Impact of Front Line Demonstration of Chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) grown under irrigated semi-arid condition of Haryana

Front line demonstrations were conducted by Krishi Vigyan Kendra Sadalpur, Hisar to find out the gap analysis between demonstration field and farmer practices under irrigated semi arid condition. It was observed that yield of chickpea was more in demonstration field when compared with farmer practices during both the years i.e. 2017-18 and 2018-19. The yield of chickpea was recorded 17.9 and 20.5 q/ha during 2017-18 and 2018-19 respectively where as in farmer practices it was observed 16.50 q/ha in 2017-18 and 16.80 q/ha in 2018-19. The average technology gap, extension gap and technology index was 8.10, 1.40 and 31.15 during 2017-18 and 9.20, 3.70 and 21.15 during 2018-19 respectively. The cost benefit ratio 1.5 and 1.8 were recorded during 2017-18 and 2018-19 respectively. The gap between demonstration field and farmer practices may be due to the farmers were not followed the latest technology as mentioned in package of practices from seed treatment to final maturity of crop.

Impact of Front Line Demonstrations on Mustard Productivity and Profitability in Shivpuri District of Madhya Pradesh, India

The study was carried out during 2017-18 to assess the impact of Cluster Front Line Demonstrations (CFLDs) on production and productivity enhancement of mustard crops. RVSKVV, Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Shivpuri conducted a total of 75 demonstrations in selected clusters with GPS locations over an area of 30 ha in district Shivpuri of Madhya Pradesh. The yield performance data and economics of demonstration and farmer’s practice plots were compiled and analyzed for calculation of gap analysis, costs and returns. The critical inputs were identified in existing production technology through personal interaction, group meetings and discussions with farmers and KVK Scientists team. The improved technologies consisting improved variety, soil testing, seed treatment mechanized sowing, integrated nutrient and weed management, and pest and disease management. The average yield of improved technology demonstrations and farmers' practices were recorded as 17.80 q/ha and 14.40q/ha respectively. Overall, the 19.10 per cent increase in yield was found in demonstration plots over check plots. The average of the technology gap, extension gap, technology index and additional return were found as 2.20q/ha, 3.40 q/ha, 11 percent and Rs.11420/ha respectively. An average net return ofRs.42140/ha was found in demonstration plots as compared to Rs.30720/ha in farmers' practices and an average B:C ratio of 2.65 and 2.28 were recorded in demonstrated and farmers practices plots respectively. The higher yield and returns in demonstrations indicated that production and productivity of mustard at farmer’s fields increased by adopting improved technologies. The results revealed that the CFLDs by interventions of scientific technologies gave positive effects on production and productivity in mustard crop cultivation.

The frontline demonstrations were carried out in 102 farmer fields to demonstrate the impact of improvedtechnology on yield of sunflower during the Spring, 2017. Each frontline demonstration was laid out on 1 acre area, and its adjacent one acre was considered as control (farmer’s practice). The frontline demonstration comprised of two hybrids namely, KBSH-44 and KBSH-53. KBSH-53 gave higher yield than KBSH-44. The result indicated that productivity of sunflower gained under improved demonstrated technology (17.10 q/ha) was higher as compared to farmer’s practices (13.14 q/ha). The study showed that improved technology gave 30.15% higher grain yield over farmers’ practices.

Impact of Front-Line Demonstration on Pulses Productivity and Profitability in Farmers Fields

Front-Line Demonstration (FLD) is a long-term educational activity carried out systematically by agricultural experts in the field of farmers to demonstrate the value of new practices/technologies in the micro-agriculture situation. The aim of the FLD was to demonstrate improved pulses technologies for production potential. Improved technologies include the use of improved varieties, seed treatment with Rhizobium and PSB culture, sowing methods, balanced fertilizer application and improved pest control techniques. The results of pulses harvested crop in 2021-2022 showed that improved varieties with improved practice packages recorded a higher yield compared to farmers’ practices. The improved technologies saw yield increases of 26.33 %, 24.63 %, 23.41 % and 22.83 % yield increase over farmer practices in green gram, chick pea, pigeon pea and black gram respectively. The average percentage yield increased by 24.30 % over farmers’ practices. The mean technological yield gap was highest for chickpea (3.47 q/ha), followed by pigeon pea (1.36 q/ha), green gram (1.34 q/ha) and black gram (1.26 q/ha). The maximum mean extension yield gap in the study was recorded in pigeon pea at 11.83 q/ha followed by black gram (5.22 q/ha) and green gram (3.57 q/ha), while the lowest extension yield gap was observed in chickpea (2.44 q/ha). The technology index varied between 7.16 and 17.35% while the lowest (7.16) was recorded for pigeon pea. The highest gross return (Rs. 81,654/ha), net return (Rs. 56,370/ha) and benefit-to-cost ratio (3.23) was recorded with chickpea demonstration followed by Black gram and green gram while lowest gross return (Rs. 44,848/ha), net return (Rs.24,634 /ha) and benefit cost ratio (2.22), which was markedly higher than gross return (Rs. 36,342/ha), net return (Rs.16,430/ha) and benefit cost ratio (1.83) in farmers practice. The improved technologies yielded a higher gross return and, net return with a higher benefit-to-cost ratio than farmers’ practices.

Impact of Cluster Front Line Demonstrations on Productivity and Profitability of Pigeonpea under NFSM in Beed District of Maharashtra, India

Background: Pulses are the integral part of many diets across the globe and they have great potential to improve human health, conserve our soils, protect the environment and contribute to global food security. India is the largest producer, consumer and importer of the pulses in the world. Pigeonpea is an important pulse crop that plays an important role in the food and nutritional security of people in the developing countries and contributing to protein intake. It is a soil building crop and being a leguminous crop, fixes atmospheric nitrogen through symbiotic fixation, there by helps in N cycling within the ecosystem. Method: Cluster frontline demonstrations on BDN 711 variety of pigeonpea were conducted bsy Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Khamgaon of Beed District, Maharashtra State. Cluster frontline demonstration of pigeonpea variety BDN 711 were conducted during 2019-20 to 2022-23 on 80 ha area in 200 number of total demonstrations. Pigeonpea variety BDN 711 released by Vasantarao Naik Marathada Krishi Vidyapeeth is resistant to wilt, drought tolerant and suitable for medium type of soils. Improved cultivation practices were demonstrated at farmer’s field for four consecutive years by active participation of farmers with an objective of improved technologies of pigeonpea production potentials. Results: The result of the demonstrations concluded that an average yield of pigeonpea under improved technology ranged from 1430 kg/ha to 1800 kg/ha with a mean 1664 kg/ha; which was 30.61 per cent higher over farmers practice (1274 kg/ha). Morever, average yield recorded was higher under demonstrations over district and state average. The study exhibited mean extension gap of 391 kg/ha, mean technology gap 535 kg/ha with mean technology index 25.23 per cent. Higher mean net return of Rs. 71912/ha with mean B:C ratio 2.36 was obtained with improved technologies in comparison to farmers practice. The results clearly indicated that the beneficial impact of front line demonstrations over the farmers practices towards enhancing the productivity of pigeonpea cultivation in Beed district of Maharashtra state, India. Demonstrated technologies proved more remunerative and economically viable compared to farmers traditional practices in pigeonpea cultivation.

Impact of Cluster Frontline Demonstrations on Yield of Chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) in Prakasam District of Andhara Pradesh, India

The Cluster Front Line Demonstrations (CFLDs) offer a unique approach to establish a direct interface between farmers and researchers, where the latter are involved in planning, executing, and monitoring the demonstrations. The objective of the current study was to evaluate the impact of front line demonstrations conducted for chickpea crop in the Prakasam district of Andhra Pradesh state. Chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) is a highly nutritious legume crop that is widely recognized as both a health food and a high-return crop. The front line demonstrations were conducted at the farmers’ fields to showcase the production potential and economic benefits of improved technologies. The findings revealed that the implementation of improved cultivation practices recommended under CFLDs, such as the use of recommended varieties, appropriate seed rate, timely sowing, and plant protection technology, resulted in a significant increase in gram crop yield compared to the check plots. The adoption of improved technologies led to higher yields, recording chickpea yields of 21.25, 21.75, and 19.50 q/ha during 2018-19, 2019-20, and 2020-21, respectively, which were 13.35%, 24.37%, and 22.22% higher than the prevailing farmer's practice. The average seed yield under improved practice (IP) was 20.83 q/ha, which was 15.48% higher than the farmer's practice (FP). The technology gap and extension gap ranged from 3.25 to 5.50 q/ha and 1.50 to 4.25 q/ha, respectively. The technology index value varied from 13.0% to 22.0% during the study period. The benefit-cost (B: C) ratio ranged from 2.23 to 2.84 under demonstration, while it was 2.15 to 2.57 under control plots. The average B: C ratio under IP (2.53) was 39.89% higher than that under FP.

Impact of Front-Line Demonstration on Direct Seeded Rice Technology under Rice-Wheat Cropping System

Krishi Vigyan Kendra Satna laid out Front Line Demonstration in the year Kharif 2020 and 2021 direct seeded rice technology on farmer’s field. Direct-seeded rice (DSR) has outperformed farmer’s practices. DSR performance was higher at 43.03 q/ha and 44.14 q/ha in 2020 and 2021, respectively, than at 35.83 and 35.92 q/ha in farmer’s practices. The average rise in performance was 21.49%. In spite of increase in yield of rice, technology gap and extension gap existed. The DSR technology gave higher gross monetary return (80380 & 85632 Rs./ha), net monetary return (44659 & 50086 Rs./ha) with higher benefit cost ratio (2.25 & 2.41) as compared to farmer's practices. The variation in per cent had increase the yield due to the use of long duration local rice varieties by following the practicing of broadcasting sowing method, poor crop management practices, lack of knowledge and poor socio-economic condition. With respect to sustainable farming practices, the study found that FLD programs were effective at changing attitudes, skills and knowledge about DSR adoption.

Impact of frontline demonstrations in transfer of technology for management of paddy leaf folder

The present study was conducted to popularize the recommended practice for the management of paddy leaf folder through frontline demonstrations in Panchmahal district of central Gujarat. Results indicated that application of insecticide in recommended practices, i.e., indoxacarb 15.8 EC @ 0.015 per cent (79 g a.i./ha) was found most effective in managing leaf folder as compared to farmers practices. Demonstration plots recorded minimum mean pest infestation (0.38 larvae/hill) and higher yield (39.50 q/ha) as compared to farmers practices recorded higher pest infestation (1.44 larvae/hill) and lower yield (32.50 q/ha). The percentage increased in the yield over farmer’s practices was computed to be 21.54 %. Results of study on economic analysis of the yield performance revealed that the recommended practices recorded appreciable higher gross returns (Rs.71,100/ha) and net return (Rs.32,000/ha) with higher benefit cost ratio (1.82) as compared to farmer’s practices (1.52). The technology gap (10.50 q/ha), extension gap (7.00 q/ha) and the technology index values (21.00 %) were recorded. Frontline demonstrations brought out that the recommended practice was feasible and economically viable over farmers practice and was a better option to adopt for managing paddy leaf folder.
