The Impact of Financial Sector Development on the Sustainable Economic Growth of Pakistan

Purpose: The study examine the impact of financial Institutions and markets development on the sustainable economic growth of Pakistan.
 Design/Methodology/Approach: Time series data of Pakistan is analyzed from 1985 to 2022 by using OLS.
 Findings: Financial institutions development particularly banks are playing positive role in the real GDP growth rate of Pakistan. Financial openness has neutral effect, intermediation and liquidity has positive effect and financial institutions expansion has negative effect on the real GDP. The financial markets development is playing negative role in the real GDP growth rate in Pakistan due to weak, fragile and inefficient market institutions.
 Implications/Originality/Value: Our study findings suggest that for a sustainable economic growth Government should encourage and support financial institutions particularly banks to increase economic activities in the country.

Impact of Financial Development and Remittances on Educational Attainment within the Context of Sustainable Development: A Panel Evidence from Emerging Markets

Education is one of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations and is also a vital factor for nearly all the other SDGs. Therefore, factors underlying educational attainment are crucial for achieving the SDGs by 2030. In this context, the financial system has become critical in building various schools and covering educational expenditures such as teachers’ salaries, teaching materials, and training. This paper uses static and dynamic regression methods to study the impact of financial sector development, remittances, real GDP per capita, information and communications technologies (ICT) development, and globalization on educational attainment in 18 emerging economies over the 2000–2020 period. The results indicate that financial development, remittances, real GDP per capita, ICT development, and globalization positively impact educational attainment. Real GDP per capita, ICT development, globalization, and financial development have the highest impact of these factors. In contrast, remittances have a limited positive influence on educational attainment compared with other variables.

Impact of Financial Sector Development & Savings on Economic Development of Pakistan

The primary objective of this research was to examine the correlation between financial sector development, savings, and economic growth in Pakistan. As a developing nation, Pakistan holds considerable potential to enhance its economic condition through natural resources and favorable geographic allocation for both domestic and foreign investment. To accomplish this goal, the research utilized 2SLS techniques and yearly time-series data spanning from 1980 to 2022. The outcomes of all equations demonstrated that financial development is adversely impacted by inflation. Furthermore, high-interest rates are unfavorable for economic growth as they motivate individuals to deposit their funds in banks instead of investing them, which eventually leads to a reduction in economic activity. On the other hand, output had a positive connection with savings, whereas inflation had a negative impact on savings. In conclusion, this study emphasizes the importance of developing the financial sector and promoting savings mobilization for fostering economic growth in Pakistan. These findings could assist policymakers and the government in implementing strategies to enhance the economic development of the country.

The Impact of Financial Sector Development on Environmental Degradation (Carbon Dioxide Emission) in Pakistan

The main purpose of this research article is to determine the impact of financial sector development on environmental degradation in Pakistan. The study used the time series data of the financial sector development on environmental degradation (CO2 emission) in Pakistan during the period of 1974-2018. Due to the nature of the times series data, the Augmented Dicky Fuller test is used to detect the level of stationarity in the data. Mixed orders of the stationarity in the data are reported, and the Auto Regressive Distributed Lag model is the best technique to provide efficient results. The ADF result clearly shows that the variables except for Y, Y2, and Y3 are stationarity in the first order, while the mentioned variables are stationarity at a level. And Trade openness is stationary at first difference. The bound test results (the F-statistic value is 5.208 that exceeded the values of upper bounds value, i.e., 3.28 at a 5% significance level. Therefore, the co-integrational relationship is confirmed for the model of the study at a 5% significance level. The model depicts the impact of Financial Sector Development on environmental degradation regarding CO2 emission. It was found that FSD negatively affected environmental degradation in Pakistan in both the long and short run during the period from 1974 to 2018. The impact of PG, EC and FDI is positive and statistically significant in the long run. The impact of TO on CO2 emission is negative and significant in the long run. On the other hand side, negative shock can produce harmful effects on the environment. A positive and significant relationship is reported regarding economic growth and CO2 emission. The impact of Population growth, Financial Development Index, Trade Openness, Energy Consumption, and Economic growth is also positive and significant to CO2 emission. It is quite evident from the detailed examination of the above model. This study concluded that financial sector development efficiently contributes to long-term and short-term environmental degradation. Financial sector development negatively and significantly affects environmental quality as measured by CO2. Therefore, it is concluded that the financial sector can be used as a policy tool to reduce CO2 emission in Pakistan based on the data set from 1974-2018.

The Impact of Financial Sector Development on Inflation in CEMAC

As an extension of existing empirical research, the paper shows that despite the structure of a financial sector, the financial sector development moves in opposite directions with inflation. Empirical verification using fixed-effects method from 2000 to 2018 in CEMAC countries provides datum about the theoretical hypothesis that there is negative relationship between inflation and financial sector development. Besides, results show that despite the low level of inflation target in CEMAC, the negative relationship between inflation and financial sector development exit and the credit risk associated to credit supply activity increases inflation in an important proportion. This increase of inflation reduces the performance of the financial sector and delays the central banker actions. The main policy recommendation addressed to monetary and financial policy actors in CEMAC is to improve strategies to contain the spillover effects due to the development financial sector.

Impact of Financial Development, Financial Liberalization and Economic Growth on Financial Instability: Evidence from Panel Data

Financial instability refers to the situation when financial system faces some disturbances and volatility. There are some important factors that can have a significant influence on the stability or instability of the financial sector. The main objective of this study is to examine the impact of financial sector development, financial liberalization, and GDP growth rate on financial instability. Using data from 53 countries from 2000 to 2016 and employing a battery of estimation techniques consisting of fixed effect, random effect, dynamic panel, and system GMM, the study finds that financial development and financial liberalization accentuate financial instability. The study also finds that economic growth dampens it. Furthermore, the relationship is robust to a variety of controls like monetary independence index, exchange rate stability, law and order, and government expenditure. The policy implication is straightforward that financial development and financial liberalization demand a caution.

Impacts of Overall Financial Development, Access and Depth on Income Inequality

There is dense literature on the relationship between financial sector development (FSD) and income inequality. However, most of these studies employ a depth measure of FSD. This study argues that different components of FSD have a heterogenous impact on income inequality. This study first empirically tests the overall impact of FSD on income inequality. Thereafter, I investigate both the linear and nonlinear impact of financial sector development dimensions (depth and access) on income inequality. The study’s novelty lies in using financial access data such as ATM per adult and financial access index and comparing their impact on income inequality versus the impact of financial sector depth (growth in domestic credit) on inequality. Adding to this, fewer studies have investigated the overall impact of FSD. To solve the endogenous problem, the study uses the system General Method of Moments (GMM) on the panel data of 120 countries, from 2004 to 2019. The findings of the study are threefold. Firstly, the study finds that the overall FSD index, individual financial institutions, and market development index all narrow income inequality. Secondly, this study finds that different dimensions of FSD have heterogenous impacts on income inequality, where increased access to financial services reduces income inequality in both linear and nonlinear models. While financial sector depth narrows income inequality in the linear model, the nonlinear model reveals that the Too Much Finance hypothesis holds, as the results confirm a U-shaped relation with income inequality. These results are important for policy decisions concerning financial reforms and income distribution. These results imply that financial sector reforms can be shaped to reduce income inequality by increasing access to credit and through credit policy provisions.

Impact of financial development and internet use on export growth: New evidence from machine learning models

The current study empirically examines the impact of financial sector development and Internet use on exports value for thirty Chinese provinces from 2000 to 2018 using the Panel-Corrected Standard Error (PCSE) estimation method and Gaussian Process Regression (GPR) machine-learning model. The PCSE method shows that (i) the Internet use increases China's exports; (ii) the impact of the Internet on export growth is larger in high-middle developed provinces; (iii) Internet use increases exports in high-middle developed provinces; however, it has less contribution to exports in low-developing China's provinces; (iv) financial development does not influence export value in the three panels. We also find that the GPR machine-learning model is more robust in predicting the exports growth in China based on the financial development and Internet use, which shows that population, Internet use, GDP, and financial development are the most important factors to predict exports growth in China.

Does financial development reinforce ecological footprint in Singapore? Evidence from ARDL and Bayesian analysis.

Singapore has been ranked in the most dynamic financial market and the highest ecological deficit country, indicating that the trade-off hypothesis may exist. The main goal of the present study is to probe the impact of financial development, economic growth, and human capital on ecological footprint in Singapore from 1980 to 2016. The outcomes obtained from the Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) method have failed to provide a clear impact of financial sector development on ecological footprint. However, the Bayesian analysis reveals that both financial development and economic growth have a harmful influence on EF, while the impact of human capital is beneficial. A theoretical conclusion derived is that monetary expansion policies should be associated with improving human capital to achieve the United Nations SDGs in the context of Singapore. The findings of the study are of particular interest to policymakers for developing sound policy decisions for sustainable economic progress which is not at the cost of environment.

Government green environmental concerns and corporate real investment decisions: Does financial sector development matter?

The government intervention directly achieves the strategic variation of industrial sector. Following this, the current study analyzes the impact of government concerns for green environment on investment decisions of industrial sector and how this effect changes across the countries that have developed financial sector. The sample size consists of financial statistics for the year 2007–2016 of non-financial sector firms from 11 selected economies of Asia. We employ panel EGLS (estimated generalized least square) and two-step system GMM (generalized method of moments) model due to problem of heteroskedasticity and endogeneity relatively. The statistical outputs of both models imply that carbon taxation has a negative impact while other green environmental strategies i.e., renewable energy utilization, production of electricity from renewable energy sources, and green growth productivity positively and significantly influence real investment decisions. Additionally, the statistical analysis illustrates the moderating impact of financial sector development on aforementioned relationship. The current analysis corroborates the thoughts of Porter's hypothesis and direct the important policy recommendations regarding environmental policies and their dynamical role in industrial sector investment decisions. Industrial sector should transform its energy needs from conventional energy production sources to renewable energy production due to positive impacts of renewable sources on investment.

Financial sector development and Investment in selected countries of the Economic Community of West African States: empirical evidence using heterogeneous panel data method

This study investigated the impact of financial sector development on domestic investment in selected countries of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) for the years 1985–2017. The study employed the augmented mean group procedure, which accounts for country-specific heterogeneity and cross-sectional dependence, and the Granger non-causality test to test for causality in the presence of cross-sectional dependence. The results show that (1) The impact of financial sector development on domestic investment depends on the measure of financial sector development utilised; (2) Domestic credit to the private sector has a positive but insignificant impact on domestic investment in ECOWAS, whereas banking intermediation efficiency (i.e., ability of the banks to transform deposits into credit) and broad money supply negatively and significant influence domestic investment; (3) Cross-country differences exist in the impact of financial sector development on domestic investment in the selected ECOWAS countries; and (4) Domestic credit to the private sector Granger causes domestic investment in ECOWAS. The study recommends careful consideration in the measure of financial development that is utilised as a policy instrument to foster domestic investment. We also highlight the importance of employing country-specific domestic investment policies to avoid blanket policy measures. Domestic credit to the private sector should be given priority when forecasting domestic investment into the future.

Linkages between Financial Development and Economic Growth in the Middle-Income Countries of South Asia: A Panel Data Investigation

The present study intends to investigate the impact of financial sector development on GDP growth in the four middle-income countries of South Asia over the period of 1990–2016. Using pooled mean group (PMG) estimation, this study tries to examine whether in these developing countries, GDP growth has been influenced by size of market capitalization and size of market turnover in the long run which are used as proxy for stock market development. Similarly, domestic credit to private sector is used as proxy for banking sector development while assessing its long-run impact on GDP growth. Furthermore, by incorporating a dummy variable for the global financial crisis (2007–2008), this study investigates whether these economies are vulnerable to external shocks or not. The outcomes of this study find that relatively, the impact of banking sector on GDP growth has remained low in the region. Nevertheless, the development in both sectors has positively influenced economic growth in the long run. The outcomes of this study suggest that both, i.e. stock market and banking sector, are vital determinants of long-run economic growth in the South Asian countries. Therefore, to achieve the sustainable growth, policymakers need to adopt the global approach which can be ensured by improving the quality and scope of financial services in these countries.

Effect of Financial Sector Development on Poverty Alleviation - The Nigerian Experience (1986 – 2018)

The study examined the impact of financial sector development on investment in government treasury bills in Nigeria. Financial sector development was proxied by the ratio of money supply to GDP (M2/GDP); private sector credit to GDP (CPS/GDP) and lending interest rate while the dependent variable was measured by the outstanding treasury bills in money market. The study adopted the ex-post facto research design. The study adopted the multiple regression technique while the result of the regression coefficient was subjected to diagnostic tests. The result of the study showed that the level of intermediation and lending interest rate had significant effect on investment in treasury bills in Nigeria as a unit increase in interest rate resulted in 52 percent increase in treasury bills. Also a unit increase in lending rate of banks led to 11 percent increase in investment in treasury bills in Nigeria. Based on the results, the study recommended a systematic reduction in lending interest rates and increase in savings rate to stimulate high investment returns to savers and reduce the credit risk on lending

The Impact of Financial Sector Development and Sophistication on Sustainable Economic Growth

The drivers of economic growth and development are among the most important issues explored by economic theory. Sustainability of economic development was previously linked by various economic schools of thought to natural resources (agriculture, land, minerals, metals etc.), labor force (including skills, productivity, and education), entrepreneurship or technology and innovation. Capital was later introduced by classical economic theory as the key element. Without significant capital accumulation, all other production factors remain idle. The value added of the production process is a result of the existence, the accessibility and the cost of capital. Therefore, the development and the sophistication of the financial sector has gradually become very important for any nation interested in sustainable growth. This paper investigates the impact of financial sector development, sophistication and performance on economic growth based on a panel regression methodology. We found statistically significant results that confirm the importance of this connection and that are very consistent with economic theory and previous relevant articles and studies.

The Impact of Financial Sector Development on Foreign Direct Investment: An Empirical Study on Minimum Threshold Levels

Using panel data of 21 emerging economies, the paper investigates the financial sector development threshold levels that would influence foreign direct investment (FDI) inflows. The threshold levels we identified are 41.27% of stock market capitalization for stock market turnover, 53.55% of gross domestic product (GDP) for stock market value traded, 121.53% of GDP for stock market capitalization, 114.43% of GDP for domestic credit to private sector by banks, 144.06% of GDP for domestic credit provided by financial sector, 0.22% of GDP for outstanding domestic private debt securities and 41.26% of GDP for outstanding domestic public debt securities. Our results show that higher stock market and banking sector development above the threshold level positively and significantly influence FDI inflows whilst the influence of lower stock market and banking sector development on FDI inflows was weak and not significant. Levels of private bond market development equal to or greater than the threshold level are found to have a positive but non-significant impact on FDI inflows whilst private bond market development levels less than the threshold have a weaker positive and non-significant influence on FDI inflows. On the other hand, public bond market development levels equal to or greater than the threshold level negatively influenced FDI inflows whilst levels of public bond market development less than the threshold positively but non-significantly attracted FDI inflows into emerging markets.

Does Financial Sector Development Augment Cross-Border Capital Flows?

ABSTRACTThe sharp increase in volatility of capital flows in recent years has resulted in many countries altering the regulations governing the flow of foreign capital only to find such changes having a limited impact. We postulate that one reason for the limited effectiveness of such changes in regulations is the level of financial sector development in the country. As a country enhances its level of financial sector development, it also develops more and more sophisticated financial instruments. The more advanced the domestic financial instruments are, and the deeper is the integration of the domestic financial markets with the world markets, the greater is the likelihood of developing strategies to bypass capital account management measures. In this paper, we use various empirical techniques to identify the impact of financial sector development on capital flows, after accounting for regulatory regime. The empirical results indicate that there is a threshold effect in the financial sector development capital flow relationship. In particular, financial sector development augments greater integration with global capital flows only above a threshold level. Below the threshold level we find financial development reduces the extent of integration with global capital markets.

Does financial development improve environmental quality in Turkey? An application of endogenous structural breaks based cointegration approach

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to investigate the long-run effect of financial sector development, energy use and economic growth on carbon emissions for Turkey, in presence of possible regime shifts over a period of 1960-2013.Design/methodology/approachAlong with the conventional unit root tests, Zivot-Andrews unit root test with structural break has been employed to check the stationarity of variables. The cointegrating relationship between variables is investigated by using the autoregressive distributed lag bounds test and Hatemi-J threshold cointegration test.FindingsThe results confirm a cointegrating relationship between the variables. The long-run relationship between the variables has gone through two endogenous structural breaks in 1976 and 1986. Development of financial sector improves environmental quality whereas energy use and economic growth degrade it. The results challenge the validity of environmental Kuznets curve hypothesis in Turkish economy.Research limitations/implicationsThe study uses domestic credit to private sector as a proxy for development of financial sector. The model can be improved by constructing an index of financial development instead of using a single determinant as a proxy for financial development.Practical implicationsThe study may pave the way for policy makers to capture important environmental pollutants in better way and develop effective and efficient energy and economic policies. This may make significant contribution to curbing CO2 emissions while sustaining economic growth.Originality/valueThis is the only study to examine long-run impact of financial sector development on carbon emissions, using the threshold cointegration approach. Hence, the study is a gentle request to reduce the possible omitted variable econometric estimation bias and fill the gap in the existing literature.

Channels of financial sector development and rural-urban consumption inequality in India

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine the direct (microcredit), medium-direct (bank credit), and indirect (through economic growth) effect of financial sector development (FSD) on rural-urban consumption inequality (RUCI) in India using state-wise annual data from 1999-2000 to 2011-2012. Design/methodology/approach A panel data analysis for a sample of 15 major Indian states using the generalized method of moments estimators provides an empirical evidence for the direct (microcredit), medium-direct (bank credit), and indirect (economic growth) effect of FSD on RUCI. Findings FSD is pro-urban in India resulting in a declining rural-urban consumption ratio (RUCR) and increasing RUCI. The negative effect of FSD on RUCR is greatest through the medium-direct channel followed by the indirect and direct channels. Research limitations/implications The study questions the social banking initiatives of the government in rural areas where more than 80 percent of the poor reside. There is a need for restructuring financial inclusion programs with a shift in their focus on rural areas and an improved mechanism to target the poor. Originality/value The paper proposes that formal financial services by banks are primarily availed by non-poor and urban population and hence acts as a medium-direct channel whereas the semi-formal financial services by microfinance institutions specifically target the rural poor and act as a direct channel to affect the poor. It is the first ever study to use state-wise data on microcredit disbursed under Self-help Group Bank Linkage Program to assess the direct impact of FSD on RUCI.
