Impact of Entrepreneurial Activities on Organisational Innovativeness of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in Osun State, Nigeria

Purpose. The entrepreneurial activity has requirements that distinguish it from other professional activities, especially managerial activities and other requirements associated with recognizing business opportunities and engaging in innovative activity. Meanwhile, Entrepreneurial activities have been identified in the literature as drivers of SMEs’ growth and development. The study determined the mechanisms by which entrepreneurial activities impact the organisational innovativeness of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in Osun State, Nigeria. Design/Methodology/Approach. This study adopted a survey research design. The population of this study consisted of three thousand and seven (3007) Owners/Managers of registered SMEs in Osun State, Nigeria. The sample size of three hundred and fifty-three (353) for the study was arrived at using the Taro Yamane formula for sample size. This study employed a simple random sampling technique for the selection of respondents across all the three senatorial districts in Osun State. The primary data used for the analyses were collected from the respondents through the use of a structured questionnaire, and responses were analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Finding and Implication. Two hypotheses were proposed and tested. The first hypothesis revealed a significant impact of creativity at (R2 = 0. 982, β = 0.1.004, t = 90.701, p< 0.05) on SMEs organisational innovativeness and the second hypothesis revealed a significant impact of knowledge transfer at (R2 = 0.993, β = 0.1.012, t = 144.459, p< 0.05) on organisational innovativeness. Therefore, policymakers may be encouraged to develop and support policies that promote a creative culture and facilitate knowledge-sharing mechanisms among SMEs. Limitations. The study focuses only on entrepreneurs’ creativity, without recognizing the employee creativity. The study was also constrained by the cross-sectional and singlerespondent nature of the study. Originality. The claim about measuring performance with organisational innovativeness remains unclear to SMEs in Nigeria because most of the researches were carried out among large enterprises.

The Multidimensional Role of Social Entrepreneurship: A Case Study Approach Within an International Project Context

Social entrepreneurship creates social value and has a multidimensional impact (e.g. economic, environmental, cultural). This is related to the complexity and multidimensional approaches to current societal problems such as climatic changes and socioeconomic crises. The paper explores this multidimensionality by presenting three Portuguese case studies of social entrepreneurship operating in diverse domains. The study is based on primary and secondary data on the selected social enterprises. The analysis explores the motivations and constraints in forming a social enterprise and the impact of entrepreneurial activity. There is evidence of multiple roles played by these entrepreneurial agents, and, therefore, their critical role in the response to the problems that current societies face.

Impact of Entrepreneurial Activity and ICT Development on Sustainable Development: Evidence from High-Income Countries

Sustainable development has become a vital issue in the globalizing world given the food insecurity, climate change, significant degradation of the environment and depletion of natural resources, and biodiversity loss. Therefore, the identification of the key factors behind sustainable development is important for the planning and application of the proper policies by countries. In this context, the institutional, demographic, social, and economic determinants of overall sustainable development have been extensively explored, but the interplay among sustainable development, entrepreneurial activity, and ICT development has stayed relatively untouched. This article investigates the effect of entrepreneurial activity, proxied by total early-stage entrepreneurial activity and ICT development, on the overall sustainable development of 15 high-income countries over the 2002–2018 period; it uses the Westerlund and Edgerton cointegration test with a structural break, taking notice of the gap in the empirical literature regarding the determinants of sustainable development. The cointegration analysis shows that entrepreneurial activity and ICT development have a positive influence on sustainable development in the long run, but that the effect of ICT on overall sustainable development is shown to be stronger in comparison to entrepreneurial activity. ICT penetration and entrepreneurial activity should be encouraged through institutional, educational, and fiscal incentives to make progress in sustainable development.

The impact of entrepreneurial activities and college students' entrepreneurial abilities in higher education-A meta-analytic path.

The purpose of this study is to quantitatively analyze 34 independent papers collated from both domestic and international literature on the correlation between university entrepreneurial activities and college students’ entrepreneurial abilities by means of meta-regression analysis and to examine in detail the significant factors affecting the entrepreneurial competencies of university students. The study revealed a significant positive relationship between entrepreneurial activities in universities and university students’ entrepreneurial ability, and further explored the extent to which each of the three types of entrepreneurial activities had an impact on college students’ entrepreneurial abilities. Then, the effects of different moderating variables on the relationship are further analyzed. The results show that the type of university, economic development, gender ratio, age structure, and time to publication all significantly moderate the degree of correlation between university entrepreneurial activities and college students’ entrepreneurial abilities.

Role of entrepreneurial activities for Nigeria’s economic recovery and growth (a case of studying Nigerian enterprises)

The paper presents the empirical analysis of the effect of entrepreneurship activity on the economic recovery and growth using SMEs in Nigeria. Two cities from each of the six geopolitical zones and four sectors of the economy were selected for the study. The total number of the selected four sectors form the population of the study while the sample size is seven hundred and twenty. The analysis employs the Ordinary Least Square techniques and time-series data for the economic recovery. The study adopts the Phillips-Perron test procedure to examine the stationarity of the study variables. The Johansen Cointegration test was employed to establish the cointegration of the variables and the unrestricted Error Correction Model was used to examine the speed of the alteration to the equilibrium. It has been inferred that the entrepreneurship activity and ERG are integrated of order (1(0)). This is established by the explanatory power of the models result of R value of 0.274 and R2 approximated to 0.075. The result shows a low positive impact of entrepreneurial activities on ERG. The study proves that, despite the crash in oil industry, the entrepreneurship has contributed positively to the Nigerian economy although at a low level. The study suggests that the government should support the development of entrepreneurship

Exploring the Effects of Types of Early-Stage Entrepreneurial Activity on Subjective Well-Being

Entrepreneurial activity has been seen as the single most important activity of individuals due to its role in the economic development of nations. However, little is known about the impact of entrepreneurial activity on the subjective well-being of nations beyond its economic impact. The purpose of this study is to explore the impact of different types of entrepreneurial activity – total entrepreneurial activity, opportunity-driven entrepreneurial activity and innovative entrepreneurial activity – on subjective well-being across nations. We consider three distinct mechanisms by which entrepreneurship may influence subjective well-being at the national level. Our panel data includes representative country-level data from 2008 to 2015 from five different data sources for 31 European countries. We employ four econometric models for analyzing the panel data: pooled OLS regression (POLS), fixed effects model (FE), random effects model (RE), and simultaneous equations model (3SLS). Our results suggest that opportunity-driven entrepreneurial activity has a positive impact on subjective well-being. In addition, we find that subjective well-being affects the level of opportunity-driven and innovative entrepreneurial activity. These findings have implications for policy-makers seeking to promote not only economic development but also subjective well-being in the nation.

Behavioral entrepreneurship for achieving the sustainable development goals

This paper extends prior studies on sustainable entrepreneurship by proving how the impact of entrepreneurial activity on achieving sustainable development depends on the behaviors and motivations of entrepreneurs. More precisely, we examine the influence of opportunity and necessity driven entrepreneurs on the economic, social, and environmental dimensions of sustainable development, which are constructed based on the 17 sustainable development goals (SDGs). Using data for twenty developing countries, we find from the long-run estimates that opportunity entrepreneurship has a positive impact on the three dimensions of sustainable development, whereas necessity entrepreneurship has a negative effect on the environmental sustainability dimension. We also find from the short and long-run causality analyses that opportunity-driven entrepreneurs granger cause the three dimensions in the short and long-run, whereas necessity-driven entrepreneurs do not have any effect on these dimensions. Finally, the authors make some suggestions for further research in this area.

ECOPRENEURSHIP APPROACH AS A SOLUTION TO ENVIRONMENTAL PROBLEM: IMPLICATION FOR UNIVERSITY ENTREPRENEURSHIP EDUCATION

Environmental degradation is a consequence of using resources for economic purposes only. The impact of entrepreneurial activity, especially as industry, deteriorates the environment. University-offered entrepreneurship programs produce entrepreneur that can solve unemployment and low-income problems. By extension, more entrepreneurs will increase business activity and increasingly degrade the environment. The aims of this research were to examine the intentions of university students to become entrepreneurs using personal attitude, subjective norms, and self-efficacy as the driving factors; find the social intention of university students to become entrepreneur using empathy, self-efficacy, and exposure as inspirations; and explain the role of entrepreneurship education can play in environmental sustainability. In this research, the sample was chosen using quantitative methods from a population of President University, Faculty of Business students, Cikarang, West Java. The data collection method was a survey using a questionnaire, assessed by multiple regression data analysis. The results showed that entrepreneurial intention was significantly influenced by personal attitude, subjective norms, self-efficacy, and socioentrepreneurial intention. Internal factors significantly influenced students’ ambitions to become entrepreneurs. In term of environmental sustainability, entrepreneurship education was needed to implement ecopreneurship approach.

Greater fit and a greater gap

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to understand how national institutional environments contribute to differences in life satisfaction between entrepreneurs and employees.Design/methodology/approachLeveraging person–environment fit and institutional theories and using a sample of more than 70,000 entrepreneurs and employees from 43 countries, the study investigates how the impact of entrepreneurial activity on life satisfaction differs in various environmental contexts. An entrepreneur’s life satisfaction arguably should increase when a high degree of compatibility or fit exists between his or her choice to be an entrepreneur and the informal and formal institutional environment.FindingsThe study finds that differences in life satisfaction between entrepreneurs and employees are larger in countries with high power distance, low uncertainty avoidance, extant entrepreneurship policies, low commercial profit taxes and low worker rights.Originality/valueThis study sheds new light on how entrepreneurial activity affects life satisfaction, contingent on the informal and formal institutions in a country that support entrepreneurship by its residents.

Investigating the relationship between entrepreneurial activity and economic growth: a case of Middle East

The current research is aimed at investigating the relationship between entrepreneurial activity and economic growth, more specifically, in the context of Middle East countries. Entrepreneurial activities are professed to improve the economic development of the country through employment generation, increase in the rate of gross domestic product (GDP), increased productivity levels, poverty alleviation, and so on. Based on the possibility of these positive aspects, economic growth is considered to be driven through increased entrepreneurial activities, in the context of developing countries. To investigate this relationship between research variables, quantitative data was collected using the World Bank database of 8 Middle Eastern countries for the period 2009-2016. Based on the correlation and regression results, the study finds a significant positive impact of entrepreneurial activity (measured as new businesses registered) on economic growth (GDP growth) in the Middle East. Therefore, it is important for states in the Middle East to focus on promoting entrepreneurial activity, which influences economic growth.

Entrepreneurial Ecosystem, Entrepreneurial Activity and Economic Performance

In this research, we have empirically tested the impact of Entrepreneurial Framework Conditions (EFC) on entrepreneurial activity and ultimately on economic growth of a nation. In our sample all the 54 countries participating in the GEM study in 2017 are taken. 67.8% of the world’s population and 86.0% of the world’s GDP is represented by the economies included in GEM 2017. The entrepreneurial ecosystem is captured through 12 EFCs used in the GEM model that includes: Financial environment, government policy of support and relevance, government policy of taxes and bureaucracy, government programs, entrepreneurial education at school stage and post school stage, R&D transfer, commercial and legal infrastructure, internal market dynamics, access to physical infrastructure, and social and cultural norms. The impact of these EFCs and their significance in creating entrepreneurial activity (TEA) in a nation is analyzed using OLS estimation technique with TEA as dependent variable. Secondly, the impact of entrepreneurial activity (TEA) on economic growth ( ∆GDP) is estimated using OLS regression model with control variables such as global competitiveness index (GCI) and Gross national income per capita, expressed in purchasing power parity (GNIC). The results suggest that entrepreneurship education at post school stage, entry burdens and cultural and social norms are significant framework conditions that support entrepreneurial activity, while R&D transfer, internal market dynamics and commercial and legal infrastructure hinders the process of entrepreneurship. Furthermore, TEA is significantly contributing to the economic growth of factor driven and efficiency driven economies.

Sectoral entry-barriers for entrepreneurial activities – a Russian start-up between challenging global markets and local conservative path dependencies

Purpose Sectoral foresight activities often identify technological opportunities but leave the question open who will pursue them. Entrepreneurial activities have become increasingly important for the introduction and commercialization of new technological solutions. The same is true for Russia’s oil and gas industry, which requires a major technological upscaling to stay competitive. Promising start-ups, however, often face high barriers and fail to commercialize superior technological solutions. The purpose of this study is to show how industry-specific entry barriers can hamper start-up activities. Design/methodology/approach This paper discusses the experiences of a Russian oilfield service start-up in commercializing a self-developed technology for increasing the productivity of oil wells. Findings The start-up faced conservatism from corporate decision-makers, declining oil prices and suboptimal protection of intellectual property rights. The company overcame most barriers through moving into other markets outside of Russia, as closing a deal with customers in the USA and Canada went much faster than the extended business cycles of national oil companies. Originality/value This paper connects sectoral foresight activities to the real-life experience of a start-up. The findings suggest that entry barriers need to be addressed by the planning process to really pave the way for a greater impact of entrepreneurial activity.

Localization, innovation and entrepreneurship: an appraisal of the analytical impact of Marshall's notion of industrial atmosphere

The purpose of the paper is to appraise the impact of Marshall’s ideas on today’s analysis of localized industrial activities, with a special focus on his vision of the entrepreneur’s action on the emergence of local industrial atmosphere. The first section uses Marshall’s approach to industrial dynamics. This approach articulates knowledge and organization and the role of local actors in the structuring of industrial districts leading to the rise of some peculiar atmospheres. Section two examines the use of Marshall’s ideas in the modern literature on Italian industrial districts and business localization. The third section focuses on the impact of entrepreneurial activities and innovation in the building up of industrial atmosphere. The fourth section concludes.

Do public governance and the depth of financial intermediation impact the entrepreneurship growth relationship?

The literature on entrepreneurship suggests that the impact of entrepreneurial activity on economic growth varies with the stage of economic development of a country. While entrepreneurial activity is positively associated with economic growth in rich countries, it has a negative effect poor countries. Our paper explores this implication by examining the association between entrepreneurial activity and economic growth for a sample of countries. Our econometric investigation suggests inadequate depth and development of the financial sector reduce the growth-enhancing impact of entrepreneurial activities. Surprisingly, the existence of corruption does not impede the beneficial impact of entrepreneurial activity on growth in our data set.

B-learning for Literary Studies in the European Space of Higher Education

This report presents the work of LEETHi ( Spanish and European Literatures from Text to Hypertext ), a research group based at Universidad Complutense Madrid, whose projects have focused on the teaching of literature from an intercultural perspective while also helping students to develop competence in information literacy, following the impact of entrepreneurial activities on the academic research system. These projects address the potential role that the Social Sciences and Humanities (Education and Literature, in particular) can play with regard to the imminent development of a European knowledge-based society and its educational, ethical and social implications. Hypertextual models are employed by LEETHi to create new educational spaces that can generate novel learning processes and new forms of production of information and transmission of knowledge, according to European Convergence didactic patterns. The report focuses particularly on the practical outcomes of LEETHi's projects.
