Impact and User Observation of Online Journals in Periyar University (PU): An Empirical Study

This paper has made an attempt to investigate the usage and impact of electronic journals or online journals among the users such as post-graduate students, MPhil scholars, and Ph.D. research candidates from the department of School of Social Sciences at Periyar University, Salem, Tamilnadu, India. It found for the analysis the filled questionnaires rate was 83% and also found among the four departments, Journalism and Mass Communication department has got ranked first with 24% to fill the questionnaire. The main purpose of this research is to analyze the impact and the utilization of electronic journals which are provided by the University Library to the user community. For data analysis, a total of two hundred questionnaires were distributed among the four departments to fill the questionnaire. Out of 200, we received only 166 dully filled questionnaires at the rate of 83%. The result shows that the majority of respondents were female with 61.55% whereas the remaining was male with 38.45% and a huge number of 73 (43.97%) respondents were postgraduate students. The majority of 83 (50.0%) respondents were preferred to use the pdf format out of 166 users of the department of the School of Social Sciences. 73 (43.96%) user communities were using the electronic journals weekly. Among the 166 respondents, 77 (46.39%) respondents were using the Internet to access electronic journals.

Impact of electronic journals on university libraries of India: a study

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to examine the impact of e‐journals on university libraries in terms of resources, staffing, space, technical services and equipment.Design/methodology/approachA well‐structured questionnaire was designed to collect the data for the present study. A thorough survey of the literature was done to examine the findings of the earlier relevant studies.FindingsThe results of the survey provide useful information regarding the impact of e‐journals on subscription to e‐journals, infrastructure, staff, space, technical services, photocopying, inter‐library loan, library use and reference services.Originality/valueThe study will have important implications for information creators, publishers, libraries, scholars and researchers. It evaluates the impact of e‐journals on libraries and points out the directions that e‐journals will take in the future.

Impact of Electronic Journals on University Libraries of Punjab and Chandigarh: A Study

The present study examines the impact of e-journals on university libraries in terms of resources, staffing, space, technical services and equipment. A well structured questionnaire was designed to elicit opinions of the librarians. The results of the survey provide useful information regarding impact of e-journals on subscription to e-journals, infrastructure, staff, space, technical services, photocopying, inter-library loan, library use and reference services. On the basis of the results, some suggestions have been put forward for developing e-journals and ensuring their proper maintenance and utilization.

Use and impact of electronic journals in the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi, India

PurposeThis paper aims to describe the use of electronic resources and services provided at the central library of Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi. The paper is focused to know who these electronic information services users are, how often they use the services and the place where the information is accessed. Also, the users are asked to give their preferences between an electronic and print journal format.Design/methodology/approachThe questionnaire method is used for collecting the data from the users (i.e. undergraduate, postgraduate, research scholar and faculty), categories‐wise.FindingsIt has been found that usage of e‐journals is increasing; this is due to awareness among the users about the library e‐resources and services. Owing to an easy access available at various places in the institute, users are accessing these resources at hostels and departments more as compared to the library. The users coming to library have decreased.Originality/valueThe present paper will help other institutes understand the need for library electronic resources, and motivate them to update their resources in the larger interest of the students, faculty and research scholars. The paper also indicates how a suitably designed survey can show the awareness and use of types of information services, in this case e‐journals. There is a dearth of such studies in India and the methodology and findings can be applied to other libraries to reveal similar trends as well as comparisons.

The impact of consortia purchasing of periodical publications on the document supply service

PurposeThis paper aims to show the impact of consortia purchased periodical publications on document supply services. These services have undergone considerable changes over the last five years, first decreasing but now recovering.Design/methodology/approachFirst, this paper reviews the most recent specialised literature, focusing mainly on the impact of electronic journals in libraries, their effects, and proposed actions. Second, as an example of this new behaviour, presents the document supply service data, as collected in one hospital's health‐science library in the last four years.FindingsAs evidenced by the literature, the users' acceptance of electronic journals has undoubtedly been excellent. Consortia purchasing projects have become a basic tool that expand collections, support cooperative technological development, and require negotiating skills from librarians. But these mass purchases do not seem to be the ideal solution for libraries, they entail losing freedom when choosing the collection and often make library collections homogeneous by publisher.Originality/valueReflects on what possible causes have led to the current situation and the current way to manage the collection.

The impact of electronic journals on interlibrary lending: A longitudinal study of statewide interlibrary loan article sharing in Illinois

Interlibrary loan (ILL) article sharing data from the 26 largest libraries in Illinois were collected in 1995/96, 1999/00, and most recently in 2002/03. The OCLC Management Statistics Service supplied the data with the permission of the participating libraries. Longitudinal data analysis focused on the changes that have taken place in article sharing over the past eight years within the state, offering insights into the impact of access to electronic journals. Results show a decline in the number of ILL article requests among the 26 largest libraries in Illinois: a near 26% drop in overall article requests took place between these libraries from 1999/00 to 2002/03, a much larger decline than was expected. The data provide answers to frequently posed questions concerning the impact of electronic journal packages on ILL article sharing and offer some insight concerning the future of ILL in the age of full-text online article availability.

Electronic Scientific Information, Open Access, and Editorial Peer Review

ABSTRACT This paper reviews some of the many changes to publishing resulting from the electronic environment and focuses on how open access may impact or alter the editorial peer review process. Developments of particular importance to editorial peer review include the impact of electronic journals (e-journals) on scholarly publishing in general, pre-print repositories, open access journals, and access to unpublished data. New pricing models are changing the economics of scholarly publishing, and there are promises of quick reviews that may impact the peer review process itself. The paper ends with a discussion of the role the government is playing in developing a workable open access model.

PurposeThe article aims to provide an update on the situation of document supply and interlibrary loan in France in the first months of 2005. The main topic is open access to scientific information.Design/methodology/approachDescribes open access, consortial purchasing, national archives, portals, electronic delivery and legal issues. Some evidence is given on the impact of electronic journals on document supply.FindingsIn the France of 2005, the legal environment and the (science, technical and medical) STM lobby continue to strengthen the position of rights‐holders (publishers) and to increase restrictions and prices of access to scientific information, fixing unrealistic copyright fees around a US$30 level.Originality/valueProvides international interlending and document supply (ILDS) practitioners with intelligence on the current developments in interlending and document supply in France.

PurposeTo consider the economic and physical impact of electronic journals on remotely stored print stock.Design/methodology/approachA collection of print journals was used as an object for consideration. Physical and heritage aspects of the collection are examined and questions are posed regarding the wisdom of future retention in response to increased demand for electronic alternatives.FindingsEmerging trends predict a predominance of periodical literature in electronic form. The future of local remote storage for low demand printed journal collections needs to be evaluated in economic as well as cultural terms.Research limitations/implicationsBased on a collection at the Boole Library, University College Cork, Ireland.Practical implicationsSimilar consideration should be given to collections in other regional libraries.Originality/valueContributes to discussions on the long‐term value of retaining print journal holdings.

Changing patterns in interlibrary loan and document supply

The article looks at a number of possible reasons for the current downturn in the volume of interlibrary loan (ILL) and document supply (DS) requests in the UK higher education (HE) sector. Figures quantifying the demand for these services are examined at the outset by means of a short survey that was circulated to ten HE institutions. The impact of electronic journals on ILL and DS services is scrutinised and proven to be a significant factor. The bibliographic searching behaviour of university researchers is investigated by means of a short questionnaire, and the results of the survey are evaluated. The recent rise in the number of postgraduate students in UK universities is confirmed. The topics of library budgets and the impact of end‐user services are also examined. The article concludes that it is the increase in the number of electronic journal subscriptions that has had the most significant impact on the recent decrease in demand for ILL and DS services in UK academic libraries.

The impact of electronic journals on academic libraries: the changing relationship between journals, acquisitions and inter‐library loans department roles and functions

This article is based on a study undertaken for an MSc dissertation looking at the impact of electronic journals on the relationship between acquisitions, inter‐library loans and journals departments in academic libraries. The study shows that, although electronic journals may be affecting departments in libraries, other factors may be present, e.g. budget cuts, staffing levels, etc. At present, it is still too early to judge the full impact of electronic journals on library services.

Impact of Electronic Journals

In June 1998, the Medical Library at Cedars-Sinai Health System began offering full-text journals on the Medical Center's intranet. The librarians collected and analyzed usage data to see if and how full-text use impacted the use of the online databases system and the library's print journal collection. Statistics documented a dramatic increase in system use with the addition of the online journals. Both the number of interactive sessions and the number of hours spent on the OVID system increased significantly. Access from outside the library increased. In one year, use of online journals increased to 60% of total journal use (print and online), but print journal use did not decrease. The statistics have been used to increase the budget for online journals, to adjust the number of user licenses and to gain support for additional funding. The popularity of full-text journals gives librarians opportunities to promote themselves as educators, consultants, and negotiators.
