Can board funds, bank credit, and economic development improve food production? Evidence from South Asia

PurposeThis study investigates the impact of board funds, banking credit, and economic development on food production in the context of South Asian economies (India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Nepal).Design/methodology/approachThis study used data from the World Development Indicators covering the years 1991–2019. To investigate the relationship between the variables of the study, we employed the panel unit root test, panel cointegration test, cross-sectional dependence test, fully modified least squares (FMOLS), and panel dynamic least squares (DOLS) estimators.FindingsThe empirical results indicate that board funding significantly increase food production; however, banking credit had a negative impact. Furthermore, the findings indicate that economic development, Arable land, fertilizer consumption, and agricultural employment play a leading role in enhancing food production. The results of the Dumitrescu-Hurlin causality test also show substantiated the significance of the causal relationship among all variables.Practical implicationsSouth Asian countries should prioritize board funding, bank credit, and economic development in their long-term strategies. Ensuring financial access for farmers through micro-credit and public bank initiatives can spur agricultural productivity and economic growth.Originality/valueThis study is the first to combine board funding, banking credit, and economic development to better comprehend their potential impact on food production. Instead of using traditional approaches, this study focuses on these financial and developmental aspects as critical determinants for increasing food production, using evidence from South Asia.

The Impact of the Digital Economy on Population Dividends in China: Based on the Dual Perspective of Quantity and Quality

The demographic dividend plays an important role in promoting sustainable development in China. Here, we ask the question of how to use the digital economy to coordinate the “one body and two sides” of the demographic dividend. This study empirically examines the impact of digital economic development on the demographic dividend in a multidimensional way based on the panel data from 30 provincial-level administrative regions in China from 2011 to 2020. The study results show that (1) the digital economy significantly promotes the demographic quality dividend but exhibits a suppressive effect on the demographic quantity dividend; (2) the digital economy can indirectly influence the demographic quality and quantity dividends through urbanization; (3) when examining the threshold effects, the study uncovers noteworthy dynamics, whereby the urbanization levels serve as significant thresholds, showcasing “diminishing marginal effects” in the digital economy’s influence on both population quantity and quality dividends; (4) digital economic development has a positive spillover effect on the demographic quantity dividend in adjacent areas. By clarifying these dynamics, the research results provide valuable insights into China’s sustainable use of the digital economy to create a demographic dividend.

Study on the Impact of Digital Economy Enabling High-Quality Economic Development in Yunnan Province

This article aims to explore the role of digital economy and its mechanism in promoting the high-quality development of Yunnan Province's economy. By constructing an evaluation index system and applying econometric methods, the current situation of the digital economy in Yunnan Province and its impact on the high-quality development of the economy are comprehensively analyzed. It is found that the digital economy has a significant positive contribution to the high-quality development of Yunnan Province's economy, and indirectly affects the high-quality development of the economy by enhancing the level of entrepreneurship. In addition, there is a non-linear relationship between the digital economy and high-quality economic development, and the promotion effect of the digital economy on high-quality economic development varies significantly across different levels of economic development. Based on these findings, the article puts forward policy recommendations such as comprehensively promoting the development of the digital economy and implementing a differentiated digital economy development strategy in order to promote the sustainable development of Yunnan Province and the wider region in the era of the digital economy.

Dual-cycle wastewater resource utilization is aimed at improving the utilization rate of water resources and reducing the discharge of urban wastewater in order to increase the utilization rate of natural resources and achieve the circular utilization of water resources during urban development. Based on the dual-cycle concept, this study aims to explore the coordination between wastewater resource utilization and economic development in China, and understand the impact between the two. Literature research and data analysis are mainly used to analyze data from different provinces in China, making the research practically valuable. Through the analysis of data from five different provinces, it is found that the better the economic development of a province, the higher the importance attached to wastewater resource utilization. However, due to the impact of rapid economic development, the efficiency of wastewater resource utilization shows a slow trend. Conversely, inland provinces that attach importance to wastewater resource utilization, despite some shortcomings in economic development, have strong potential for economic development, which reflects the coordination between the two. The overall coupling degree between wastewater resource utilization and economic development in China is in a stable growth trend, showing a primary level of coordination. To achieve advanced or even superior coordination, further research on the coordination between wastewater resource utilization and economic development based on the dual-cycle concept is needed. This research aims to provide reference value for improving the coordination between wastewater resource utilization and economic development and discover the relationship between the two under different economic development conditions, where regions with higher economic development efficiency have higher wastewater resource utilization rates, but there is no obvious coordination. Therefore, the research focuses on studying the coordination between wastewater resource utilization rates and economic development in different economic development regions, innovating the content of coordination research.

A Study on the Potential of Digital Economy in Reducing Agricultural Carbon Emissions

Agriculture is a significant source of carbon emissions, which have a substantial environmental impact. The digital economy plays a vital role in mitigating these emissions through innovative digital solutions. As a leading agricultural nation, China faces substantial pressure to reduce its agricultural carbon emissions(ACE). This paper aims to thoroughly examine the relationship between the growth of the rural digital economy and ACE. To achieve this, we utilize an extensive panel dataset covering China's provinces from 2011 to 2020, analyzing the dynamic and spatial effects of digital economy development on ACE. The key findings of this research are as follows: (1) The rapid expansion of the digital economy significantly reduces ACE. (2) The impact of digital economic development on lowering ACE varies spatially, with a clear progression from eastern to western regions. (3) The digital economy helps reduce ACE through three specific channels: fostering technological innovation, enhancing scale efficiency management, and providing agricultural financial incentives. Based on these findings, this study proposes policy recommendations to improve digital infrastructure, promote balanced regional development in the digital economy, and optimize the management of agricultural science and technology. These policy insights aim to transform agriculture and achieve the goal of reducing ACE, thereby contributing to broader environmental sustainability.

Will Wealth Weaken Weather Wars?

This study estimates the moderating impact of economic development on climate-conflict linkages during 1989-2019 in Africa, the world region that in recent decades has experienced the most armed conflict. We build a spatially disaggregated dataset that merges multiple decades of georeferenced data on climate shocks and conflict events with both local- and national-level measures of economic development to help shed light on the relative importance of local opportunity costs versus state capacity. We find that higher national GDP per capita greatly dampens the conflict risk associated with higher temperatures, suggesting that enhanced state capacity is a key factor.

The impact of urbanization and economic development on health insurance performance: Evidence from China

Many previous studies find no significant effect of health insurance on health outcome in rural areas of China. Many researchers believe this could be because of the characteristics of health care provision in those areas. In this paper, we aim to examine if urbanization will change the situation. Our research question focuses on if urbanization will change the participation and performance of health insurance on health outcome in a positive direction. Using a longitudinal sample drawn from the China Health and Nutrition Survey (CHNS), we employed multiple estimation strategies for multiple waves to handle the potential selection bias. We find that urbanization factors such as population density, transportations and housing are associated with probability of insurance participation. That is, urbanization related factors tend to increase people’s willingness of insurance participation. We also conclude that urbanization improves the performance of insurance on self-reported health outcome. Results show that the health insurance has a significant positive impact on health production in urbanized areas. Health insurance in general increases the probability of health care utilization for all areas. However, it does not lead to a significant improvement in the health outcomes in under urbanized areas because of the health provision quality or characteristics of health insurance coverage in those areas.

Environmental and Economic Clustering of Indonesian Provinces: Insights from K-Means Analysis

Indonesia's archipelago presents a distinctive opportunity for targeted sustainable development due to its complex interplay of economic advancement and environmental challenges. To better understand this dynamic and identify potential areas for focused intervention, this study applied K-means clustering to 2022 data on the Air Quality Index (AQI), electricity consumption, and Gross Regional Domestic Product (GRDP). The analysis aimed to delineate the provinces into three distinct clusters, providing a clearer picture of the varying levels of economic development and environmental impact across the nation's diverse islands. Each cluster reflects specific environmental and economic dynamics, suggesting tailored policy interventions. The results show that for provinces in Cluster 1, which exhibit moderate environmental quality and lower economic activity, the introduction of sustainable agricultural enhancements, eco-tourism, and renewable energy initiatives is recommended. Cluster 2, marked by higher economic outputs and moderate environmental conditions, would benefit from the implementation of smart urban planning, stricter environmental controls, and the adoption of clean technologies. Finally, Cluster 3, which includes highly urbanized areas with robust economic growth, requires expanded green infrastructure, improved sustainable urban practices, and enhanced public transportation systems. These recommendations aim to foster balanced economic growth while preserving environmental integrity across Indonesia’s diverse landscapes.

This paper aims to analyze the development of the Russian economy and explore its impact on Sino-Russian economic and trade cooperation. Firstly, the paper reviews the historical background and current situation of the Russian economy, with a focus on analyzing the main economic indicators and government policies. Secondly, the historical background, current situation, and cooperation areas of Sino-Russian economic and trade cooperation are summarized, and the opportunities and challenges of cooperation are discussed. Subsequently, the paper analyzes the factors influencing the impact of Russian economic development on Sino-Russian economic and trade cooperation and prospects for future cooperation. Finally, based on the research results, strategies and suggestions for promoting the development of Sino-Russian economic and trade cooperation are proposed to provide reference and support for bilateral cooperation.

New evidence on the real role of digital economy in influencing public health efficiency

In recent years, the rapid advancement of digital technology has supported the growth of the digital economy. The transformation towards digitization in the public health sector serves as a key indicator of this economic shift. Understanding how the digital economy continuously improves the efficiency of public health services and its various pathways of influence has become increasingly important. It is essential to clarify the impact mechanism of the digital economy on public health services to optimize health expenditures and advance digital economic construction. This study investigates the impact of digital economic development on the efficiency of public health services from a novel perspective, considering social media usage and urban–rural healthcare disparities while constructing a comprehensive index of digital economic development. The findings indicate that the digital economy reduces the efficiency of public health services primarily through two transmission mechanisms: the promotion of social media usage and the widening urban–rural healthcare gap. Moreover, these impacts and transmission pathways exhibit spatial heterogeneity. This study unveils the intrinsic connection and mechanisms of interaction between digital economic development and the efficiency of public health services, providing a theoretical basis and reference for government policy formulation. However, it also prompts further considerations on achieving synergy and interaction between the digital economy and public health services.

The Impact of Technology on Economic Development in Somalia

This study focuses on the impact of technology on economic development in Somalia. The objectives of the study entail: to explore the impact of technology on economic development in Somalia, to analyse the challenges hindering the impact of technology on economic development in Somalia and to determine the necessary strategies to improve the impact of technology on economic development in Somalia. The study employed qualitative research approach and used documentary review to collect data in relation to the impact of technology on economic development in Somalia, the challenges hindering the impact of technology on economic development in Somalia and the necessary strategies to improve the impact of technology on economic development in Somalia. A comprehensive search of academic databases was conducted to identify relevant documentary sources, such as books, research articles, review papers and reports such International Monetary Fund reports, World Bank reports and Federal Government of Somalia reports. The keywords including “technology,” “impact,” “economic development,” “practical challenges” and “practical strategies” were used to retrieve the most pertinent documents. The key findings of the study revealed that technology has got several impact of economic development in Somalia such as improved financial inclusion, increased productivity and income for farmers, improved health of the population, improved education sector and increased job creation. However technology in Somalia is facing several challenges hindering its impact on economic development in Somalia such as limited access to technology, limited access to finance political instability, lack of infrastructure and lack of skilled labor. The necessary strategies to improve the impact of technology on economic development in Somalia entail: investing in improving the country's telecommunications and information technology infrastructure, promoting digital literacy, supporting entrepreneurship, foster collaboration and fostering enabling environment for innovation. The study recommends that Federal Government of Somalia should increase investment in infrastructure, invest in education and skills training, promote entrepreneurship and innovation and support digital financial services to improve the impact of technology on economic development in Somalia.

Does Higher Institutional Quality Result in Environmental Sustainability? A Comparative Study of India and China

There is a lack of comprehensive research comparing India and China in terms of institutional quality and environmental degradation. This special issue aims to make threefold distinct contributions. By comparing India and China, we can learn from each other's experiences and gain insight into the shared difficulties both nations face when trying to achieve environmental sustainability in the face of high-quality institutional frameworks. The impact of corruption, economic development, ecological risk, and renewable energy sources on carbon dioxide emissions in China and India is investigated in this study. For this reason, we also employ the ARDL model and pairwise Granger causality to prove that something caused another. Applying the ARDL long-run bound test, the empirical results reveal a long-run connection between variables in both China and India. In the case of China and India, the estimated results also reveal a negative correlation between carbon emissions and the usage of renewable energy sources, but a positive correlation between carbon emissions and economic growth, corruption, and environmental risk. Improving institutional quality is the goal, and the present theoretical and applied discourse on comparative environmental sustainability is a good place to start. As a result, policymakers in China and India should oppose unfair practices that undermine competition laws and policies by instituting stringent anti-corruption measures and environmental rules. Energy efficiency measures that reduce carbon emissions without slowing economic growth should also be the government's primary focus.

Dynamic simulation of the economic impact of financial development based on wireless sensor networks and artificial intelligence

In this article, we use the method of sample analysis to analyze the current development of China's financial industry and the impact of the financial industry on the current economy. In the process of analysis, we found that China's economic development is unbalanced. The eastern part has a fast development process, while the western part has a slow development process, and the economic independence is poor. Export-oriented income accounts for a large proportion of total income. The original data system has defects and cannot provide a reliable source of data for the embedded database. Therefore, we have developed an analysis system that can be applied to the embedded database to more accurately predict the impact of the financial industry on economic development. The alternative model used later gave dynamic analysis capabilities that the original analysis system did not possess, and improved the predictability of the financial environment by enhancing the variability of the system, thus achieving breakthrough achievements in analysis. Through various research investigations, we can find that embedded databases have their unique advantages in many aspects. At present, due to the development of the multimedia industry, the pace of joint development of intelligent AI technology and the financial industry is also accelerating, which brings more development opportunities while also bringing many challenges. Therefore, the traditional financial industry needs to undergo transformation. The advancement of science and technology is the fundamental driving force for the development of every industry. Therefore, we need to increase investment in science and technology, cultivate new talents, enhance risk control capabilities, strengthen supervision of the industry, and enhance the intelligent level of industry development.

Environmental governance and regional green development: Evidence from China

This study examined the relationship between government environmental governance (GEG) and regional green development. The findings suggest that GEG boosts green innovation by promoting the "innovation compensation effect" while inhibiting regional green development due to increased environmental costs, supported by the "compliance cost effect". The relationship between GEG and regional green development is moderated by economic development and environmental pollution in an inverted U-shaped pattern. When economic development and environmental pollution are at lesser levels, the positive effect of GEG amplifies as economic growth and environmental pollution ascend. However, if economic growth and environmental pollution continue to escalate, the positive impact of GEG will lose its strength. In low-carbon pilot cities, GEG negatively affects regional green development, whereas the opposite effect is seen in non-pilot cities. Regardless, there is an inverted U-shaped moderating impact of economic development or environmental pollution in both low-carbon pilot and non-pilot cities, yet the inflection point varies across regions. This paper offers an original perspective by creating a theoretical link between green development and environmental governance and emphasizes the significance of a nonlinear viewpoint when examining the relationship between variables in the regional green development process, thereby expanding our understanding of green development phenomena.

A Study of The Impact of Economic Development Across China on Higher Vocational Education

The impact of economic development in different regions of China on the development of higher vocational education is one of the key topics of research today. The researcher found that although higher vocational education has many positive impacts and promotes the regional economy to a certain extent, there are also problems such as lack of attention, waste of a large number of labour talents, and irrational allocation of resources, etc. However, there are some research gaps on the issue of the impact of the regional economy on higher vocational education; and there are also problems such as insufficient explanations of the problems and hazards caused by the problems and the measures to solve them. Therefore, this study directly analyses, summarizes, and investigates the relevant literature, summarizes the positive and negative impacts of regional economic development on the development of higher vocational education, and puts forward suggestions from government policies to promote school-enterprise cooperation, rational allocation of resources, and the development of higher vocational education in these aspects.

The Regional Economic Foundations of European Identity

Abstract The question of whether there is increasing social integration among EU citizens in Europe as a spill ‑over effect of the ongoing process of system integration, as expected by utilitarian perspectives on integration, has been discussed in many contri‑ butions so far. In particular, the question of how the economic strength and develop‑ ment of macro ‑units affects European social integration has gained new momentum after the 2004 enlargement, when economically weaker ECE countries became part of the EU. In this contribution, I focus on the impact of regional economic strength and development on European social integration. I analyse the relationship between the economic situation and development of NUTS‑1 regions and individual European identity using Eurobarometer data for the years 2004, 2010 and 2015. Using descrip‑ tive and multivariate quantitative approaches, I show that regional economic strength is weakly correlated with European identity, although not significant in multivariate models. However, citizens who believe that the EU is an economic advantage are more likely to identify as Europeans and are more prevalent in regions with higher economic growth. I conclude that convincing citizens of the economic benefits of EU membership could result in increased European social integration in the long run.

Study on the Impact of Green GDP Accounting System on Climate - Based on Integrated Evaluation and Markov Modelling

GDP does not consider the impact of economic development on environmental hazards and resource consumption. Therefore, our team developed a reliable model and utilized the GGDP to assess the fiscal health of countries with the hope that governments will adopt policies to mitigate the impact of economic development on the global climate. To measure the financial health of each country's system, we selected raw data on five critical factors for 50 countries from 2010 to 2020. We then validated the data distribution patterns and selected the 80% quartile as the healthy range for each indicator. We used analytic hierarchical process (AHP) to determine the weights of each hand. Finally, we introduced the concept of the Economic Health Index (EHI) concept, which represents an economy's actual health. We also use Markov chains to predict the future global climate impact of flexible government policy measures to promote GGDP growth after GGDP replaces GDP. To measure the effect on global climate, we use the achievement of the GHG emissions and energy consumption targets agreed upon by countries in the Paris Agreement.

Can the allocation of primary health care system resources affect efficiency? A spatial Dubin model study in China

BackgroundThe primary health care (PHC) system plays an important role in China’s health care system, but there are challenges such as irrational allocation of health resources and inefficient operation, which need to be improved. The purpose of this study was to explore the impact of resource allocation on the efficiency of the PHC system in China.MethodsThe data in 31 provinces were collected from the China Statistical Yearbook 2017–2021 and the China Health Statistical Yearbook 2017–2021. The comprehensive health resource density index (CHRDI) was constructed based on the entropy method and the health resource density index (HRDI), which was used to analyze the allocation of primary health resources in each province. The adjusted efficiency of the PHC system in each province was calculated by the bootstrap data envelopment analysis (DEA). Finally, the spatial Dubin model was used to explore the effect of the CHRDI on efficiency.ResultsFrom 2016 to 2020, the allocation of primary health resources in 31 provinces showed an increasing trend, and the average efficiency after correction showed a decreasing state year by year. The spatial direct effect and spatial spillover effect coefficients of CHRDI were 0.820 and 1.471, which positively affect the efficiency. Per capita Gross Domestic Product (GDP), urbanization rate, and the proportion of the elderly were the factors affecting the efficiency of the PHC system.ConclusionsThe allocation of primary health resources in all provinces in China has improved each year, but there are still great differences, and efficiency must be further improved. Pay attention to the spatial spillover effect of the level of resource allocation and formulate differentiated measures for different regions. Attention should also be paid to the impact of population aging and economic development on the utilization of primary health resources by increasing health needs and choices.
