A dual-branch selective attention capsule network for classifying kiwifruit soft rot with hyperspectral images

Kiwifruit soft rot is highly contagious and causes serious economic loss. Therefore, early detection and elimination of soft rot are important for postharvest treatment and storage of kiwifruit. This study aims to accurately detect kiwifruit soft rot based on hyperspectral images by using a deep learning approach for image classification. A dual-branch selective attention capsule network (DBSACaps) was proposed to improve the classification accuracy. The network uses two branches to separately extract the spectral and spatial features so as to reduce their mutual interference, followed by fusion of the two features through the attention mechanism. Capsule network was used instead of convolutional neural networks to extract the features and complete the classification. Compared with existing methods, the proposed method exhibited the best classification performance on the kiwifruit soft rot dataset, with an overall accuracy of 97.08% and a 97.83% accuracy for soft rot. Our results confirm that potential soft rot of kiwifruit can be detected using hyperspectral images, which may contribute to the construction of smart agriculture.

SAR Image Fusion Classification Based on Improved D-S Evidence Theory

Applications for classifying Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images are critical to environmental monitoring, urban planning, and land resource surveying. Fusion approaches work well for increasing SAR image categorization accuracy. However, effective processing of uncertainty information is frequently overlooked by conventional fusion classification systems. This paper presented a fusion classification approach for SAR images based on improved Dempster-Shafer (D-S) evidence theory, taking into account the uncertainty and possible conflicts in the classifiers’ output. First, after adaptively identifying the optimal hyperparameters of models, the SAR data is identified using Gradient Boosting Machine (GBM), Multilayer Perceptron (MLP), and Random Forest (RF). Different weights are then allocated in accordance with the variations in classifier performance. Ultimately, enhanced D-S evidence theory is used to integrate the output of these classifiers. In addition, uncertainty in classification results is also modeled and visualized. Experiments with Flevoland and Oberpfaffenhofen datasets show that the accuracy of this method is 85.21% and 91.88% respectively, outperforming both the soft voting ensemble classifier (SVE) and D-S evidence theory fusion method. This approach enhances the comprehension and capacity to manage uncertainty in the model output in addition to increasing the accuracy and reliability of the classification of SAR data.

An effective ensemble approach for classification of chest X-ray images having symptoms of COVID: A precautionary measure for the COVID-19 subvariants

In recent years many people have died due to COVID-19 infection. The death rate increases due to the lack of proper diagnosis and treatment. It can be detected by RT-PCR test and from chest X-rays. Chest X-ray images can identify lung diseases such as COVID-19, viral pneumonia, and tuberculosis (TB). Because many illnesses share similar patterns and diagnoses, radiologists and clinicians find it challenging to distinguish between them. This study uses convolutional neural networks (CNN) and ensemble models (VGG-19, ResNet50, vision transformer) to analyze chest X-ray images from internet sources to identify lung illness. The present research proposed an ensemble model comprised of VGG-19, ResNet50, and a vision transformer for the detection of COVID-19 and normal images with an accuracy of 92.46 percent and 94.52 % for the detection of COVID-19, normal and viral pneumonia respectively. Also, a comparative study has been conducted between CNN and ensemble approach for detecting COVID-19 and pneumonia disease from chest x-ray images. The proposed approach may also help in the early detection of other variants of COVID-19 such as JN.1, and HV.1 in the future.

Deepfake Detection and Classification of Images from Video: A Review of Features, Techniques, and Challenges

The proliferation of deepfake technology poses significant challenges to the integrity and authenticity of visual content in videos, raising concerns about misinformation and deceptive practices. In this paper, we present a comprehensive review of features, techniques, and challenges related to the detection and classification of deepfake images extracted from videos. Existing literature has explored various approaches, including feature-based methods, machine learning algorithms, and deep learning techniques, to mitigate the adverse effects of deepfake content. However, challenges persist, such as the evolution of deepfake generation methods and the scarcity of diverse datasets for training detection models. To address these issues, this paper reviews related work on approaches for deepfake image detection and classification and synthesises these approaches into four categories - feature extraction, machine learning, and deep learning. The findings underscore the importance of continued research efforts in this domain to combat the harmful effects of deepfake technology on society. This study provides recommendations for future research directions, emphasizing the significance of proactive measures in mitigating the spread of manipulated visual content.

SWT-PCA-CNN: hyperspectral image classification with multi-stage feature extraction and parameter tuning

Hyperspectral imaging is an increasingly popular technique in remote sensing, offering a wealth of spectral information for a range of applications. This paper presents a comparative study of hyperspectral image classification techniques using three different datasets: Indian Pines, Salinas, and Pavia University. The study employs a combination of three methods, namely stationary wavelet transforms (SWT), principal component analysis (PCA), and convolutional neural network (CNN), to develop a model for hyperspectral image classification. The proposed approach combines SWT and PCA for spatial feature extraction and dimensionality reduction, followed by classification using CNN. Furthermore, the study performs parameter tuning by changing the optimizer, activation function, and filter size of the CNN model on the Indian Pines dataset. The results demonstrate that the proposed SWT-PCA-CNN approach outperforms the conventional DWT-PCA and PCA-KNN algorithms, achieving an overall classification accuracy of 98.2%, 99.86%, 99.80% on the Indian Pines, Salinas and Pavia University datasets respectively. The study highlights the effectiveness of the proposed approaches for hyperspectral image classification and their potential for applications in remote sensing and other fields.

HPB3C-3PG algorithm: A new hybrid global optimization algorithm and its application to plant classification

This paper proposes a hybrid bio-inspired search and optimization algorithm that combines the strengths of the PB3C (Parallel Big Bang Big Crunch) and 3PGA (3 Parent Genetic Algorithm) algorithms. The hybrid algorithm employs a single population-based evolutionary search coupled with multi-population parallel processing techniques to address optimization problems. The proposed algorithm is implemented in MATLAB software. We evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithm on the CEC2021 standard test bench suite. The performance of the proposed approach is compared with that of the other nine algorithms. The comparative analysis shows that the proposed hybrid PB3C and 3PGA algorithms performed better than the other nine optimization algorithms. Furthermore, this chapter proposes an HPB3C-3PGA-based approach to evolve the near-optimal architecture of CNN. The proposed plant image classification approach is implemented in Python and compared with 12 other approaches. The proposed approach achieved an accuracy of 98.96% on the Mendeley dataset and 98.97% on the CVIP100 dataset. The proposed approach outperforms all other approaches for the plant leaf classification problem. This research significantly contributes to overcoming limitations in existing approaches, providing a robust solution for optimization problems and image classification tasks.

COVID-19 Image Classification: A Comparative Performance Analysis of Hand-Crafted vs. Deep Features

This study investigates techniques for medical image classification, specifically focusing on COVID-19 scans obtained through computer tomography (CT). Firstly, handcrafted methods based on feature engineering are explored due to their suitability for training traditional machine learning (TML) classifiers (e.g., Support Vector Machine (SVM)) when faced with limited medical image datasets. In this context, I comprehensively evaluate and compare 27 descriptor sets. More recently, deep learning (DL) models have successfully analyzed and classified natural and medical images. However, the scarcity of well-annotated medical images, particularly those related to COVID-19, presents challenges for training DL models from scratch. Consequently, I leverage deep features extracted from 12 pre-trained DL models for classification tasks. This work presents a comprehensive comparative analysis between TML and DL approaches in COVID-19 image classification.

Classification of radio galaxies with trainable COSFIRE filters

ABSTRACT Radio galaxies exhibit a rich diversity of morphological characteristics, which make their classification into distinct types a complex challenge. To address this challenge effectively, we introduce an innovative approach for radio galaxy classification using COSFIRE filters. These filters possess the ability to adapt to both the shape and orientation of prototype patterns within images. The COSFIRE approach is explainable, learning-free, rotation-tolerant, efficient, and does not require a large training set. To assess the efficacy of our method, we conducted experiments on a benchmark radio galaxy data set comprising of 1180 training samples and 404 test samples. Notably, our approach achieved an average accuracy rate of 93.36 per cent. This achievement outperforms contemporary deep learning models, and it is the best result ever achieved on this data set. Additionally, COSFIRE filters offer better computational performance, ∼20 × fewer operations than the DenseNet-based competing method (when comparing at the same accuracy). Our findings underscore the effectiveness of the COSFIRE filter-based approach in addressing the complexities associated with radio galaxy classification. This research contributes to advancing the field by offering a robust solution that transcends the orientation challenges intrinsic to radio galaxy observations. Our method is versatile in that it is applicable to various image classification approaches.

The Role of Remote Sensing in Forest Cover Changes in Butambala District, Central Uganda

Natural forests in Uganda have experienced changes which must be quantified to inform future forest resource management and avoid the danger of reduced ecosystem service benefits. The primary purpose of this study was to assess forest changes in Butambala District by employing remote sensing techniques and GIS tehniques. The original contribution is the capacity to detect Central Forest Reserve cover decline using remote sensing in the study area for a 27-year period (1995-2020). Landsat 5 and Sentinel 2 images were processed using a supervised image classification approach to identify and quantify land use/cover changes. The study results indicated that the district has undergone land cover/use changes over the last 27 years. The prevailing changes in the district from 1995 to 2022 were expansions of built-up areas from (0.54% to 4.22%), agriculture from (42.38% to 79%), and decreases in grassland from (29.9% to 0%), natural forest cover from (14.07% to 5.9%), wetland from (8.24% to 7.9%), tree plantation from (4.87% to 3.3%). The changes threaten the environment and quality of life of people. Therefore, there is need to take critical and practical measures to regulate land use and landcover changes and conserve natural resources in Butambala District

A Novel Image Classification Approach via MobileNet Model for Security Assessment of Power System

The computational complexities of conventional techniques used for security assessment of power system are addressed by proposing a maiden deep learning-based technique capable of boosting security calculations, increasing decision-making efficiency, and reducing hazards for real time operation. This approach uses MobileNet Convolutional Neural Network (MCNN) to evaluate security with reduced model size and computational burden as compared to traditional CNN architectures by leveraging special type of convolution technique. MCNN's automatic feature extraction and strong generalization allow the operator to determine whether the current operating state of power system is secured or not. All of the system’s critical operational scenarios are developed via load flow studies for generation of data while accounting for small signal stability with ℓ − 1 security and converted into RGB images of varied input dimensions for training and testing of the MCNN. Once trained, the MCNN is well-suited for real-time applications like assessing whether current state of the system is secured or not including unforeseen occurrences like topological changes in a computation-free manner. The comparative performance of the proposed method with customized CNN on three typical IEEE test system demonstrates its superior performance in terms of better accuracy and computational efficiency.

Alterations in zonal distribution and plasma membrane localization of hepatocyte bile acid transporters in patients with NAFLD.

NAFLD is highly prevalent with limited treatment options. Bile acids (BAs) increase in the systemic circulation and liver during NAFLD progression. Changes in plasma membrane localization and zonal distribution of BA transporters can influence transport function and BA homeostasis. However, a thorough characterization of how NAFLD influences these factors is currently lacking. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of NAFLD and the accompanying histologic features on the functional capacity of key hepatocyte BA transporters across zonal regions in human liver biopsies. A novel machine learning image classification approach was used to quantify relative zonal abundance and plasma membrane localization of BA transporters (bile salt export pump [BSEP], sodium-taurocholate cotransporting polypeptide, organic anion transporting polypeptide [OATP] 1B1 and OATP1B3) in non-diseased (n = 10), NAFL (n = 9), and NASH (n = 11) liver biopsies. Based on these data, membrane-localized zonal abundance (MZA) measures were developed to estimate transporter functional capacity. NAFLD diagnosis and histologic scoring were associated with changes in transporter membrane localization and zonation. Increased periportal BSEPMZA (mean proportional difference compared to non-diseased liver of 0.090) and decreased pericentral BSEPMZA (-0.065) were observed with NASH and also in biopsies with higher histologic scores. Compared to Non-diseased Liver, periportal OATP1B3MZA was increased in NAFL (0.041) and NASH (0.047). Grade 2 steatosis (mean proportional difference of 0.043 when compared to grade 0) and grade 1 lobular inflammation (0.043) were associated with increased periportal OATP1B3MZA. These findings provide novel mechanistic insight into specific transporter alterations that impact BA homeostasis in NAFLD. Changes in BSEPMZA likely contribute to altered BA disposition and pericentral microcholestasis previously reported in some patients with NAFLD. BSEPMZA assessment could inform future development and optimization of NASH-related pharmacotherapies.

Image Segmentation and Classification using Neural Network

Image segmentation and classification tasks in computer vision have proven to be highly effective using neural networks, specifically Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs). These tasks have numerous practical applications, such as in medical imaging, autonomous driving, and surveillance. CNNs are capable of learning complex features directly from images and achieving outstanding performance across several datasets. In this work, we have utilized three different datasets to investigate the efficacy of various preprocessing and classification techniques in accurssedately segmenting and classifying different structures within the MRI and natural images. We have utilized both sample gradient and Canny Edge Detection methods for pre-processing, and K-means clustering have been applied to segment the images. Image augmentation improves the size and diversity of datasets for training the models for image classification. This work highlights transfer learning’s effectiveness in image classification using CNNs and VGG 16 that provides insights into the selection of pre-trained models and hyper parameters for optimal performance. We have proposed a comprehensive approach for image segmentation and classification, incorporating preprocessing techniques, the K-means algorithm for segmentation, and employing deep learning models such as CNN and VGG 16 for classification.

Sea Ice Extraction via Remote Sensing Imagery: Algorithms, Datasets, Applications and Challenges

Deep learning, which is a dominating technique in artificial intelligence, has completely changed image understanding over the past decade. As a consequence, the sea ice extraction (SIE) problem has reached a new era. We present a comprehensive review of four important aspects of SIE, including algorithms, datasets, applications and future trends. Our review focuses on research published from 2016 to the present, with a specific focus on deep-learning-based approaches in the last five years. We divided all related algorithms into three categories, including the conventional image classification approach, the machine learning-based approach and deep-learning-based methods. We reviewed the accessible ice datasets including SAR-based datasets, the optical-based datasets and others. The applications are presented in four aspects including climate research, navigation, geographic information systems (GIS) production and others. This paper also provides insightful observations and inspiring future research directions.

Deep Learning-based Ensemble Approach for Conventional Pap Smear Image Classification

Cervical cancer screening allows the early signs of precancerous abnormalities in the cervix before they develop into invasive cancer. The Pap Smear is a widely used screening for early detection and prevention of cervical cancer. In many remote areas, the number of cytologists available to interpret pap smear screening tests is insufficient. This lack of personnel makes the test interpretation very time-consuming. To address this, deep learning techniques have been employed to detect cervical cancer cells and support cytologists. Therefore, an integrative approach with deep learning models and the ensemble techniques such as the maximum occurrence and the maximum probability score of cervical cells was proposed. The multi-cell assessment of the Pap smear slide allowed aggregate predictions of single cervical cell images using the proposed method. The classification results between pre-trained deep learning models and the proposed method were compared. In the experimental results, the proposed method can achieve an accuracy score of more than 97%, while the best pre-trained deep learning model can attain an accuracy score of more than 85%. Hence, the proposed method may have the potential to assist physicians or cytologists in the classification of cervical cell types for Pap Smear images.

Octonion-based transform moments for innovative stereo image classification with deep learning

Recent advances in imaging technologies have led to a significant increase in the adoption of stereoscopic images. However, despite this proliferation, in-depth research into the complex analysis of the visual content of these stereoscopic images is still relatively rare. The advent of stereoscopic imaging has brought a new dimension to visual content. These images offer a higher level of visual detail, making them increasingly common in a variety of fields, including medicine and industrial applications. However, exploiting the full potential of stereoscopic images requires a deeper understanding. By exploiting the capabilities of octonion moments and the power of artificial intelligence, we aim to break new ground by introducing a novel method for classifying stereoscopic images. The proposed method is divided into two key stages: The first stage involves data preprocessing, during which we strive to construct a balanced database divided into three distinct categories. In addition, we extract the stable Octonion Krawtchouk moments (SOKM) for each image, leading to a database of moment images with dimensions of 128 × 128 × 1. In the second step, we train a convolutional neural network (CNN) model using this database, with the aim of discriminating between different categories. Standard measures such as precision, accuracy, recall, F1 score, and ROC curves are used to assess the effectiveness of our method. These measures provide a quantitative assessment of the performance of our object classification approach for stereoscopic images.

Harnessing synthetic data for enhanced detection of Pine Wilt Disease: An image classification approach

Pine Wilt Disease (PWD) is a devastating disease that affects forest ecosystems and has no known cure. Early detection is essential for suppressing infections of PWD. Recent efforts have focused on leveraging deep learning-based algorithms for the early detection of PWD. However, data collection, labeling, and quality assurance for such a method are costly and challenging. Particularly for PWD, the data collection period is limited, restricting the diversity of the dataset. To overcome these challenges, this paper introduces a virtual forest considering PWD created using 3D rendering tools, from which we built a synthetic dataset. Furthermore, to ensure the resemblance of the synthetic data to the real data, we employed Image-to-Image (I2I) translation techniques. We used the EfficientNetv2-S model to compare the results from each dataset. We were able to confirm the potential of our model trained solely on the PWD synthetic dataset for real PWD detection. Moreover, the model trained on an ensemble comprising both real and synthetic data exhibited improved performance, achieving an F1 Score of 92.88%. Using the I2I translation technique for an ensemble of real and synthetic data also demonstrated enhanced performance. This result confirms the validity and practicality of the synthetic data proposed in this study. The findings of this study are expected to contribute to the broader forest ecosystem preservation and agricultural management by extending to other forest disease detection and agricultural fields. Wetland Mapping by Fusion of Deep learning and Ensemble Model for Enhancing Prediction Outcomes

Constraints perceived in different socioeconomic situations reinforce land use patterns and land cover (LULC) at different levels. However, the statistical information regarding the LULC variations encounters enormous significance for the execution and modelling of appropriate environmental variations and resource management with the available remote sensed data from diverse satellite images and advanced computing technologies; information is generally retrieved from the image classification approaches. However, a broader quantitative analysis of various classification approaches is crucial to choosing an effectual classifier model to acquire appropriate land use regions. We concentrate on the Karavetti region and its related fields in this study. We use a Non-Linear Recurrent Convolutional Neural Network (NLR-CNN) to analyze the data statistically. Well-known techniques such as Support Vector Machine (SVM), Random Forest (RF), and Decision Tree (DT), among others are used to evaluate the model performance. High-resolution images and the data points supplied are also used to assess the accuracy of the categorization and prediction. A confusion matrix is generated where the land cover regions show superior classification accuracy with the fusion model. Also, the NDVI facts and additional metrics like loss, error rate and kappa coefficients are analyzed. Therefore, the outcomes show that the anticipated is considered more robust with better performance to enhance the classification accuracy with the specific land cover regions.

An Integrated Active Deep Learning Approach for Image Classification from Unlabeled Data with Minimal Supervision

The integration of active learning (AL) and deep learning (DL) presents a promising avenue for enhancing the efficiency and performance of deep learning classifiers. This article introduces an approach that seamlessly integrates AL principles into the training process of DL models to build robust image classifiers. The proposed approach employs a unique methodology to select high-confidence unlabeled data points for immediate labeling, reducing the need for human annotation and minimizing annotation costs. Specifically, by combining uncertainty sampling with the pseudo-labeling of confident data, the proposed approach expands the training set efficiently. The proposed approach uses a hybrid active deep learning model that selects the most informative data points that need labeling based on an uncertainty measure. Then, it iteratively retrains a deep neural network classifier on the newly labeled samples. The model achieves high accuracy with fewer manually labeled samples than traditional supervised deep learning by selecting the most informative samples for labeling and retraining in a loop. Experiments on various image classification datasets demonstrate that the proposed model outperforms conventional approaches in terms of classification accuracy and reduced human annotation requirements. The proposed model achieved accuracy of 98.9% and 99.3% for the Cross-Age Celebrity and Caltech Image datasets compared to the conventional approach, which achieved 92.3% and 74.3%, respectively. In summary, this work presents a promising unified active deep learning approach to minimize the human effort in manually labeling data while maximizing classification accuracy by strategically labeling only the most valuable samples for the model.
