Identification of host factors that bind to the 5′ end of the MERS-CoV RNA genome

Aim: The aim of this study was to identify host factors that interact with the 5′ end of the MERS-CoV RNA genome. Materials & methods: RNA affinity chromatography followed by mass spectrometry analysis was used to identify the binding of host factors in Vero E6 cells. Results: A total of 59 host factors that bound the MERS-CoV RNA genome in non-infected Vero E6 cells were identified. Most of the identified cellular proteins were previously reported to interact with the genome of other RNA viruses. We validated our mass spectrometry results using western blotting. Conclusion: These data enhance our knowledge about the RNA–host interactions of coronaviruses, which could serve as targets for developing antiviral therapeutics against MERS-CoV.

Host gene expression is associated with viral shedding magnitude in blue-winged teals (Spatula discors) infected with low-path avian influenza virus

Intraspecific variation in host infectiousness affects disease transmission dynamics in human, domestic animal, and many wildlife host-pathogen systems including avian influenza virus (AIV); therefore, identifying host factors related to host infectiousness is important for understanding, controlling, and preventing future outbreaks. Toward this goal, we used RNA-seq data collected from low pathogenicity avian influenza virus (LPAIV)-infected blue-winged teal (Spatula discors) to determine the association between host gene expression and intraspecific variation in cloacal viral shedding magnitude, the transmissible fraction of virus. We found that host genes were differentially expressed between LPAIV-infected and uninfected birds early in the infection, host genes were differentially expressed between shed level groups at one-, three-, and five-days post-infection, host gene expression was associated with LPAIV infection patterns over time, and genes of the innate immune system had a positive linear relationship with cloacal viral shedding. This study provides important insights into host gene expression patterns associated with intraspecific LPAIV shedding variation and can serve as a foundation for future studies focused on the identification of host factors that drive or permit the emergence of high viral shedding individuals.

Molecular Virology of SARS-CoV-2 and Related Coronaviruses.

SUMMARYCoronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). The global COVID-19 pandemic continues to threaten the lives of hundreds of millions of people, with a severe negative impact on the global economy. Although several COVID-19 vaccines are currently being administered, none of them is 100% effective. Moreover, SARS-CoV-2 variants remain an important worldwide public health issue. Hence, the accelerated development of efficacious antiviral agents is urgently needed. Coronavirus depends on various host cell factors for replication. An ongoing research objective is the identification of host factors that could be exploited as targets for drugs and compounds effective against SARS-CoV-2. In the present review, we discuss the molecular mechanisms of SARS-CoV-2 and related coronaviruses, focusing on the host factors or pathways involved in SARS-CoV-2 replication that have been identified by genome-wide CRISPR screening.

RNA-protein interactomes as invaluable resources to study RNA viruses: Insights from SARS CoV-2 studies.

Understanding the molecular mechanisms of severe respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS‐CoV‐2) infection is essential for the successful development of therapeutic strategies against the COVID‐19 pandemic. Numerous studies have focused on the identification of host factors and cellular pathways involved in the viral replication cycle. The speed and magnitude of hijacking the translation machinery of host mRNA, and shutting down host transcription are still not well understood. Since SARS‐CoV‐2 relies on host RNA‐binding proteins for the infection progression, several efforts have been made to define the SARS‐CoV‐2 RNA‐bound proteomes (RNA–protein interactomes). Methodologies that enable the systemic capture of protein interactors of given RNA in vivo have been adapted for the identification of the SARS‐CoV‐2 RNA interactome. The obtained proteomic data aided by genome‐wide and targeted CRISPR perturbation screens, revealed host factors with either pro‐ or anti‐viral activity and highlighted cellular processes and factors involved in host response. We focus here on the recent studies on SARS‐CoV‐2 RNA–protein interactomes, with regard to both the technological aspects of RNA interactome capture methods and the obtained results. We also summarize several related studies, which were used in the interpretation of the SARS‐CoV‐2 RNA–protein interactomes. These studies provided the selection of host factors that are potentially suitable candidates for antiviral therapy. IRF7 and RNH1 are modifying factors of HIV-1 reservoirs: a genome-wide association analysis

BackgroundCombination antiretroviral treatment (cART) cannot eradicate HIV-1 from the body due to the establishment of persisting viral reservoirs which are not affected by therapy and reinitiate new rounds of HIV-1 replication after treatment interruption. These HIV-1 reservoirs mainly comprise long-lived resting memory CD4+ T cells and are established early after infection. There is a high variation in the size of these viral reservoirs among virally suppressed individuals. Identification of host factors that contribute to or can explain this observed variation could open avenues for new HIV-1 treatment strategies.MethodsIn this study, we conducted a genome-wide quantitative trait locus (QTL) analysis to probe functionally relevant genetic variants linked to levels of cell-associated (CA) HIV-1 DNA, CA HIV-1 RNA, and RNA:DNA ratio in CD4+ T cells isolated from blood from a cohort of 207 (Caucasian) people living with HIV-1 (PLHIV) on long-term suppressive antiretroviral treatment (median = 6.6 years). CA HIV-1 DNA and CA HIV-1 RNA levels were measured with corresponding droplet digital PCR (ddPCR) assays, and genotype information of 522,455 single-nucleotide variants was retrieved via the Infinium Global Screening array platform.ResultsThe analysis resulted in one significant association with CA HIV-1 DNA (rs2613996, P < 5 × 10−8) and two suggestive associations with RNA:DNA ratio (rs7113204 and rs7817589, P < 5 × 10−7). Then, we prioritized PTDSS2, IRF7, RNH1, and DEAF1 as potential HIV-1 reservoir modifiers and validated that higher expressions of IRF7 and RNH1 were accompanied by rs7113204-G. Moreover, RNA:DNA ratio, indicating relative HIV-1 transcription activity, was lower in PLHIV carrying this variant.ConclusionsThe presented data suggests that the amount of CA HIV-1 DNA and RNA:DNA ratio can be influenced through PTDSS2, RNH1, and IRF7 that were anchored by our genome-wide association analysis. Further, these observations reveal potential host genetic factors affecting the size and transcriptional activity of HIV-1 reservoirs and could indicate new targets for HIV-1 therapeutic strategies.

Valosin-containing protein/p97 plays critical roles in the Japanese encephalitis virus life cycle.

Host factors provide critical support for every aspect of the virus life cycle. We recently identified the valosin-containing protein (VCP)/p97, an abundant cellular ATPase with diverse cellular functions, as a host factor important for Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) replication. In cultured cells, using siRNA-mediated protein depletion and pharmacological inhibitors, we show that VCP is crucial for replication of three flaviviruses: JEV, Dengue, and West Nile viruses. An FDA-approved VCP inhibitor, CB-5083, extended survival of mice in the animal model of JEV infection. While VCP depletion did not inhibit JEV attachment on cells, it delayed capsid degradation, potentially through the entrapment of the endocytosed virus in clathrin-coated vesicles (CCVs). Early during infection, VCP-depleted cells showed an increased colocalization of JEV capsid with clathrin, and also higher viral RNA levels in purified CCVs. We show that VCP interacts with the JEV nonstructural protein NS5 and is an essential component of the virus replication complex. The depletion of the major VCP cofactor UFD-1 also significantly inhibited JEV replication. Mechanistically, thus, VCP affected two crucial steps of the JEV life cycle - nucleocapsid release and RNA replication. Our study establishes VCP as a common host factor with a broad antiviral potential against flaviviruses.ImportanceJEV is the leading cause of viral encephalitis epidemics in South-east Asia, affecting majorly children with high morbidity and mortality. Identification of host factors is thus essential for the rational design of anti-virals that are urgently need as therapeutics. Here we have identified the VCP protein as one such host-factor. This protein is highly abundant in cells and engages in diverse functions and cellular pathways by its ability to interact with different co-factors. Using siRNA mediated protein knockdown, we show that this protein is essential for release of the viral RNA into the cell so that it can initiate replication. The protein plays a second crucial role for the formation of the JEV replication complex. FDA-approved drugs targeting VCP show enhanced mouse survival in JE model of disease, suggesting that this could be a druggable target for flavivirus infections.

A novel PCV2 ORF5-interacting host factor YWHAB inhibits virus replication and alleviates PCV2-induced cellular response

Porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2) infection causes porcine circovirus associated diseases (PCVAD) worldwide. Identification of host factors that interact with viral proteins is a fundamental step to understand the pathogenesis of PCV2. Our previous study reported that ORF5, a newly identified PCV2 viral protein supports PCV2 replication and interacts with multiple host factors. Here, we showed that a host factor YWHAB is an ORF5-interacting protein and plays essential roles during PCV2 infection. By using protein-protein interaction assays, we confirmed that YWHAB directly interacts with PCV2-ORF5 protein. We further showed that YWHAB expression was potently induced upon ORF5 overexpression and PCV2 infection. Remarkably, we found that the YWHAB strongly inhibited PCV2 replication, suggesting its role in defending PCV2 infection. By using the ectopic overexpression and gene knockdown approaches, we revealed that YWHAB inhibits PCV2-induced endoplasmic reticulum stress (ERS), autophagy, reactive oxygen species (ROS) production and apoptosis, suggesting its vital role in alleviating PCV2-induced cellular damage. Together, this study demonstrated that an ORF5-interacting host factor YWHAB affects PCV2 infection and PCV2-induced cellular response, which expands the current understanding of YWHAB biological function and might serves as a new therapeutic target to manage PCV2 infection-associated diseases.

The Rice Microbiome: A Model Platform for Crop Holobiome

The plant microbiome, the consortium of microbes surrounding a plant, has potential for improving crop productivity and sustainability. Despite the necessity of agriculturally applicable microbiomes, plant microbiome studies have been conducted in noncrop plants because of the relative easiness of research. However, in order to make plant microbiomes useful for agriculture, a crop plant-based model is needed. In parallel, overlooked parts of microbiomes other than the bacteria-centered research need to be considered to expand our understandings on microbiomes to the ecosystem level. Beyond the microbial composition, functional properties of microbiomes over time and space will help us to select appropriate microbes that can support crop plants by providing stage-specific functions. Less explored communities such as fungi and protists also can provide novel insights on compositional and functional dynamics of each community, including interkingdom or multitrophic interactions. Finally, identification of host factors on functional microbiomes using genetic information of both the host and the microbiomes will shift host-centered breeding to parallel breeding of host and microbiome. This review will give basic and collective information on the rice microbiome and foster the establishment of a crop plant-based model to meet agricultural needs.

Regulation of the Hepatitis B virus replication and gene expression by the multi-functional protein TARDBP

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infects the liver and is a key risk factor for hepatocellular carcinoma. Identification of host factors that support viral replication is important to understand mechanisms of viral replication and to develop new therapeutic strategies. We identified TARDBP as a host factor that regulates HBV. Silencing or knocking out the protein in HBV infected cells severely impaired the production of viral replicative intermediates, mRNAs, proteins, and virions, whereas ectopic expression of TARDBP rescued production of these products. Mechanistically, we found that the protein binds to the HBV core promoter, as shown by chromatin precipitation as well as mutagenesis and protein-DNA interaction assays. Using LC-MS/MS analysis, we also found that TARDBP binds to a number of other proteins known to support the HBV life cycle, including NPM1, PARP1, Hsp90, HNRNPC, SFPQ, PTBP1, HNRNPK, and PUF60. Interestingly, given its key role as a regulator of RNA splicing, we found that TARDBP has an inhibitory role on pregenomic RNA splicing, which might help the virus to export its non-canonical RNAs from the nucleus without being subjected to unwanted splicing, even though mRNA nuclear export is normally closely tied to RNA splicing. Taken together, our results demonstrate that TARDBP is involved in multiple steps of HBV replication via binding to both HBV DNA and RNA. The protein’s broad interactome suggests that TARDBP may function as part of a RNA-binding scaffold involved in HBV replication and that the interaction between these proteins might be a target for development of anti-HBV drugs.

Expression of MDM2 in Macrophages Promotes the Early Postentry Steps of HIV-1 Infection through Inhibition of p53.

The molecular basis for HIV-1 susceptibility in primary human monocyte-derived macrophages (MDMs) was previously evaluated by comparing the transcriptome of infected and bystander populations. Careful analysis of the data suggested that the ubiquitin ligase MDM2 acted as a positive regulator of HIV-1 replication in MDMs. In this study, MDM2 silencing through transcript-specific small interfering RNAs in MDMs induced a reduction in HIV-1 reverse transcription and integration along with an increase in the expression of p53-induced genes, including CDKN1A Experiments with Nutlin-3, a pharmacological inhibitor of MDM2 p53-binding activity, showed a similar effect on HIV-1 infection, suggesting that the observed restriction in HIV-1 production results from the release/activation of p53 and not the absence of MDM2 per se Knockdown and inhibition of MDM2 also both correlate with a decrease in the Thr592-phosphorylated inactive form of SAMHD1. The expression level of MDM2 and the p53 activation status are therefore important factors in the overall susceptibility of macrophages to HIV-1 infection, bringing a new understanding of signaling events controlling the process of virus replication in this cell type.IMPORTANCE Macrophages, with their long life span in vivo and their resistance to HIV-1-mediated cytopathic effect, might serve as viral reservoirs, contributing to virus persistence in an infected individual. Identification of host factors that increase the overall susceptibility of macrophages to HIV-1 might provide new therapeutic targets for the efficient control of viral replication in these cells and limit the formation of reservoirs in exposed individuals. In this study, we demonstrate the importance of p53 regulation by MDM2, which creates a cellular environment more favorable to the early steps of HIV-1 replication. Moreover, we show that p53 stabilization reduces virus infection in human macrophages, highlighting the important role of p53 in antiviral immunity.

Apobec3A maintains HIV-1 latency through recruitment of epigenetic silencing machinery to the long terminal repeat

HIV-1 integrates into the genome of target cells and establishes latency indefinitely. Understanding the molecular mechanism of HIV-1 latency maintenance is needed for therapeutic strategies to combat existing infection. In this study, we found an unexpected role for Apobec3A (apolipoprotein B MRNA editing enzyme catalytic subunit 3A, abbreviated "A3A") in maintaining the latency state within HIV-1-infected cells. Overexpression of A3A in latently infected cell lines led to lower reactivation, while knockdown or knockout of A3A led to increased spontaneous and inducible HIV-1 reactivation. A3A maintains HIV-1 latency by associating with proviral DNA at the 5' long terminal repeat region, recruiting KAP1 and HP1, and imposing repressive histone marks. We show that knockdown of A3A in latently infected human primary CD4 T cells enhanced HIV-1 reactivation. Collectively, we provide evidence and a mechanism by which A3A reinforces HIV-1 latency in infected CD4 T cells.

Genome-Wide Association Study Reveals Genetic Link between Diarrhea-Associated Entamoeba histolytica Infection and Inflammatory Bowel Disease.

Entamoeba histolytica is the etiologic agent of amebic dysentery, though clinical manifestation of infection is highly variable ranging from subclinical colonization to invasive disease. We hypothesize that host genetics contribute to the variable outcomes of E. histolytica infection; thus, we conducted a genome-wide association study (GWAS) in two independent birth cohorts of Bangladeshi infants monitored for susceptibility to E. histolytica disease in the first year of life. Children with at least one diarrheal episode positive for E. histolytica (cases) were compared to children with no detectable E. histolytica infection in the same time frame (controls). Meta-analyses under a fixed-effect inverse variance weighting model identified multiple variants in a region of chromosome 10 containing loci associated with symptomatic E. histolytica infection. An intergenic insertion between CREM and CCNY (rs58000832) achieved genome-wide significance (P value from meta-analysis [Pmeta] = 6.05 × 10-9), and each additional risk allele of rs58000832 conferred 2.42 increased odds of a diarrhea-associated E. histolytica infection. The most strongly associated single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) within a gene was in an intron of CREM (rs58468612; Pmeta = 8.94 × 10-8), which has been implicated as a susceptibility locus for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Gene expression resources suggest associated loci are related to the lower expression of CREM Increased CREM expression is also observed in early E. histolytica infection. Further, CREM-/- mice were more susceptible to E. histolytica amebic colitis. These genetic associations reinforce the pathological similarities observed in gut inflammation between E. histolytica infection and IBD.IMPORTANCE Diarrhea is the second leading cause of death for children globally, causing 760,000 deaths each year in children less than 5 years old. Amebic dysentery contributes significantly to this burden, especially in developing countries. The identification of host factors that control or enable enteric pathogens has the potential to transform our understanding of disease predisposition, outcomes, and treatments. Our discovery of the transcriptional regulator cAMP-responsive element modulator (CREM) as a genetic modifier of susceptibility to amebic disease has implications for understanding the pathogenesis of other diarrheal infections. Further, emerging evidence for CREM in IBD susceptibility suggests that CREM is a critical regulator of enteric inflammation and may have broad therapeutic potential as a drug target across intestinal inflammatory diseases.

Urinary Tract Infection in a Small Animal Model: Transurethral Catheterization of Male and Female Mice

Urinary tract infections (UTI) are extremely common worldwide, incurring significant morbidity and healthcare-associated expenses. Small animal models, which accurately reflect disease establishment and progression, permit dissection of host-pathogen interactions and generation of immunity to infection. In mice, intravesical instillation of uropathogenic E. coli, the causative agent in more than 85% of community acquired UTI, recapitulates many of the stages of infection observed in humans. Until recently, however, UTI could only be modeled in female animals. This limitation has hindered the study of sex-related differences in UTI, as well as other bladder pathologies, such as cancer. Here, we describe a method to instill male mice that allows direct comparison between female and male animals and provide a detailed protocol to assess bladder tissue by flow cytometry as a means to better understand host responses to infection. Together, these approaches will aid in the identification of host factors that contribute to sex biases observed in UTI and other bladder-associated diseases.

Host Cell S Phase Restricts Legionella pneumophila Intracellular Replication by Destabilizing the Membrane-Bound Replication Compartment.

ABSTRACTLegionella pneumophila grows within cells ranging from environmental amoebae to human macrophages. In spite of this conserved strategy of pathogenesis, identification of host factors that restrict L. pneumophila intracellular replication has not been extended outside components of the mammalian innate immune response. We performed a double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) screen against more than 50% of the Drosophila melanogaster annotated open reading frames (ORFs) to identify host cell factors that restrict L. pneumophila. The majority of analyzed dsRNAs that stimulated L. pneumophila intracellular replication were directed against host proteins involved in protein synthesis or cell cycle control. Consistent with disruption of the cell cycle stimulating intracellular replication, proteins involved in translation initiation also resulted in G1 arrest. Stimulation of replication was dependent on the stage of cell cycle arrest, as dsRNAs causing arrest during S phase had an inhibitory effect on intracellular replication. The inhibitory effects of S phase arrest could be recapitulated in a human cell line, indicating that cell cycle control of L. pneumophila replication is evolutionarily conserved. Synchronized HeLa cell populations in S phase and challenged with L. pneumophila failed to progress through the cell cycle and were depressed for supporting intracellular replication. Poor bacterial replication in S phase was associated with loss of the vacuole membrane barrier, resulting in exposure of bacteria to the cytosol and their eventual degradation. These results are consistent with the model that S phase is inhibitory for L. pneumophila intracellular survival as a consequence of failure to maintain the integrity of the membrane surrounding intracellular bacteria.

Generation and Comprehensive Analysis of Host Cell Interactome of the PA Protein of the Highly Pathogenic H5N1 Avian Influenza Virus in Mammalian Cells.

Accumulating data have identified the important roles of PA protein in replication and pathogenicity of influenza A virus (IAV). Identification of host factors that interact with the PA protein may accelerate our understanding of IAV pathogenesis. In this study, using immunoprecipitation assay combined with liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry, we identified 278 human cellular proteins that might interact with PA of H5N1 IAV. Gene Ontology annotation revealed that the identified proteins are highly associated with viral translation and replication. Further KEGG pathway analysis of the interactome profile highlighted cellular pathways associated with translation, infectious disease, and signal transduction. In addition, Diseases and Functions analysis suggested that these cellular proteins are highly related with Organismal Injury and Abnormalities and Cell Death and Survival. Moreover, two cellular proteins (nucleolin and eukaryotic translation elongation factor 1-alpha 1) identified both in this study and others were further validated to interact with PA using co-immunoprecipitation and co-localization assays. Therefore, this study presented the interactome data of H5N1 IAV PA protein in human cells which may provide novel cellular target proteins for elucidating the potential molecular functions of PA in regulating the lifecycle of IAV in human cells.

Effectiveness of Albendazole for Hookworm Varies Widely by Community and Correlates with Nutritional Factors: A Cross-Sectional Study of School-Age Children in Ghana.

Mass drug administration (MDA) targeting school-age children is recommended by the World Health Organization for the global control of soil-transmitted helminth (STH) infections. Although considered safe and cost-effective to deliver, benzimidazole anthelminthics are variably effective against the three most common STHs, and widespread use has raised concern about the potential for emerging resistance. To identify factors mediating response to albendazole, we conducted a cross-sectional study of hookworm infection in the Kintampo North Municipality of Ghana in 2011. Among 140 school-age children residing in five contiguous communities, the hookworm prevalence was 59% (82/140). The overall cure rate following administration of single-dose albendazole (400 mg) was 35% (27/76), with a community-wide fecal egg reduction rate (ERR) of 61% (95% confidence interval: 51.8-71.1). Significant disparities were observed in albendazole effectiveness by community, with a cure rate as low as 0% (N = 24) in Jato Akuraa and ERRs ranging from 53% to 95% across the five study sites. Individual host factors associated with response to deworming treatment included time since last meal, pretreatment blood hemoglobin level, and mid-upper arm circumference. These data demonstrate significant community-level variation in the effectiveness of albendazole, even among populations living in close proximity. Identification of host factors that influence response to albendazole, most notably the timing of drug administration and nutritional factors, creates an opportunity to enhance the effectiveness of deworming through targeted interventions. These findings also demonstrate the importance of measuring anthelminthic response as part of the monitoring and evaluation of community-based deworming programs.

Ablation of STAT3 in the B Cell Compartment Restricts Gammaherpesvirus Latency In Vivo.

ABSTRACTA challenging property of gammaherpesviruses is their ability to establish lifelong persistence. The establishment of latency in B cells is thought to involve active virus engagement of host signaling pathways. Pathogenic effects of these viruses during latency or following reactivation can be devastating to the host. Many cancers, including those associated with members of the gammaherpesvirus family, Kaposi’s sarcoma-associated herpesvirus and Epstein-Barr virus, express elevated levels of active host signal transducer and activator of transcription-3 (STAT3). STAT3 is activated by tyrosine phosphorylation in response to many cytokines and can orchestrate effector responses that include proliferation, inflammation, metastasis, and developmental programming. However, the contribution of STAT3 to gammaherpesvirus pathogenesis remains to be completely understood. This is the first study to have identified STAT3 as a critical host determinant of the ability of gammaherpesvirus to establish long-term latency in an animal model of disease. Following an acute infection, murine gammaherpesvirus 68 (MHV68) established latency in resident B cells, but establishment of latency was dramatically reduced in animals with a B cell-specific STAT3 deletion. The lack of STAT3 in B cells did not impair germinal center responses for immunoglobulin (Ig) class switching in the spleen and did not reduce either total or virus-specific IgG titers. Although ablation of STAT3 in B cells did not have a global effect on these assays of B cell function, it had long-term consequences for the viral load of the host, since virus latency was reduced at 6 to 8 weeks postinfection. Our findings establish host STAT3 as a mediator of gammaherpesvirus persistence.

Host cell interactome of PA protein of H5N1 influenza A virus in chicken cells

Influenza A virus (IAV) heavily depends on viral-host protein interactions in order to replicate and spread. Identification of host factors that interact with viral proteins plays crucial roles in understanding the mechanism of IAV infection. Here we report the interaction landscape of H5N1 IAV PA protein in chicken cells through the use of affinity purification and mass spectrometry. PA protein was expressed in chicken cells and PA interacting complexes were captured by co-immunoprecipitation and analyzed by mass spectrometry. A total of 134 proteins were identified as PA-host interacting factors. Protein complexes including the minichromosome maintenance complex (MCM), 26S proteasome and the coat protein I (COPI) complex associated with PA in chicken cells, indicating the essential roles of these functional protein complexes during the course of IAV infection. Gene Ontology and pathway enrichment analysis both showed strong enrichment of PA interacting proteins in the category of DNA replication, covering genes such as PCNA, MCM2, MCM3, MCM4, MCM5 and MCM7. This study has uncovered the comprehensive interactome of H5N1 IAV PA protein in its chicken host and helps to establish the foundation for further investigation into the newly identified viral-host interactions. However, the manner in which avian IAV recruits the host cellular machinery for replication and how the host antagonizes the IAV infection was previously poorly understood.
