Synthesis of the ICESat/ICESat-2 and CryoSat-2 observations to reconstruct time series of lake level

ABSTRACT Synthesis of multi-satellite altimetry facilitates the acquisition of long-term changes in lake level but may induce biases due to inconsistent data sources, and thus remains largely unexplored. This study investigates the integrated application of Ice, Cloud, and land Elevation Satellite (ICESat), ICESat-2, and CryoSat-2 missions to provide consecutive lake level series in 2003–2020. The sample comprises 48 lakes in the world with gauge-based or Hydroweb water level data. The CryoSat-2 data are first adjusted to the ICESat-2 height reference based on the mean values of their monthly water level difference during their overlapping period (2018–2020). Then, the corrected CryoSat-2 data are used to link the ICESat and ICESat-2 data. Results show that in the sample lakes, the deviations between CryoSat-2 and ICESat-2 data vary and range from −0.78 m to 0.13 m. The data quality of the synthesized time series is evaluated by comparing against the validation data, with an average R 2 of 0.84. This study shows that CryoSat-2 has the potential of filling the gap between ICESat and ICESat-2. The three altimeters can be expected to integrate effectively for monitoring lake water level changes in the past two decades.

TanDEM-X PolarDEM 90 m of Antarctica: generation and error characterization

Abstract. We present the generation and validation of an updated version of the TanDEM-X digital elevation model (DEM) of Antarctica: the TanDEM-X PolarDEM 90 m of Antarctica. Improvements compared to the global TanDEM-X DEM version comprise filling gaps with newer bistatic synthetic aperture radar (SAR) acquisitions of the TerraSAR-X and TanDEM-X satellites, interpolation of smaller voids, smoothing of noisy areas, and replacement of frozen or open sea areas with geoid undulations. For the latter, a new semi-automatic editing approach allowed for the delineation of the coastline from DEM and amplitude data. Finally, the DEM was transformed into the cartographic Antarctic Polar Stereographic projection with a homogeneous metric spacing in northing and easting of 90 m. As X-band SAR penetrates the snow and ice pack by several meters, a new concept for absolute height adjustment was set up that relies on areas with stable penetration conditions and on ICESat (Ice, Cloud, and land Elevation Satellite) elevations. After DEM generation and editing, a sophisticated height error characterization of the whole Antarctic continent with ICESat data was carried out, and a validation over blue ice achieved a mean vertical height error of just −0.3 m ± 2.5 m standard deviation. The filled and edited Antarctic TanDEM-X PolarDEM 90 m is outstanding due to its accuracy, homogeneity, and coverage completeness. It is freely available for scientific purposes and provides a high-resolution data set as basis for polar research, such as ice velocity, mass balance estimation, or orthorectification.

A Method of Extracting High-Accuracy Elevation Control Points from ICESat-2 Altimetry Data

Due to its high ranging accuracy, spaceborne laser altimetry technology can improve the accuracy of satellite stereo mapping without ground control points. In the past, full-waveform ICE, CLOUD, and Land Elevation Satellite (ICESat) laser altimeter data have been used as one of the main data sources for global elevation control. As a second-generation satellite, ICESat-2 is equipped with an altimeter using photon counting mode. This can further improve the application capability for stereo mapping because of the six laser beams with high along-track repetition frequency, which can provide more detailed ground contour descriptions. Previous studies have addressed how to extract high-accuracy elevation control points from ICESat data. However, these methods cannot be directly applied to ICESat-2 data because of the different modes of the laser altimeters. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a method using comprehensive evaluation labels that can extract high-accuracy elevation control points that meet the different level elevation accuracy requirements for large scale mapping from the ICESat-2 land-vegetation along-track product. The method was verified using two airborne lidar data sets. In flat, hilly, and mountainous areas, by using our method to extract the terrain elevation, the root-mean-square error of elevation control points decrease from 1.249–2.094 m, 2.237–3.225 m, and 2.791–4.822 m to 0.262–0.429 m, 0.484–0.596 m, and 0.611–1.003 m, respectively. The results show that the extraction elevations meet the required accuracy for large scale mapping.

Performance Assessment of ICESat-2 Laser Altimeter Data for Water-Level Measurement over Lakes and Reservoirs in China

Although the Advanced Topographic Laser Altimeter System (ATLAS) onboard the Ice, Cloud, and Land Elevation Satellite-2 (ICESat-2) was primarily designed for glacier and sea-ice measurement, it can also be applied to monitor lake surface height (LSH). However, its performance in monitoring lakes/reservoirs has rarely been assessed. Here, we report an accuracy evaluation of the ICESat-2 laser altimetry data over 30 reservoirs in China using gauge data. To show its characteristics in large-scale lake monitoring, we also applied an advanced radar altimeter SARAL (Satellite for ARgos and ALtika) and the first laser altimeter ICESat (Ice, Cloud and land Elevation Satellite) to investigate all lakes and reservoirs (>10 km2) in China. We found that the ICESat-2 has a greatly improved altimetric capability, and the relative altimetric error was 0.06 m, while the relative altimetric error was 0.25 m for SARAL. Compared with SARAL and ICESat data, ICESat-2 data had the lowest measurement uncertainty (the standard deviation of along-track heights; 0.02 m vs. 0.17 m and 0.07 m), the greatest temporal frequency (3.43 vs. 1.35 and 1.48 times per year), and the second greatest lake coverage (636 vs. 814 and 311 lakes). The precise LSH profiles derived from the ICESat-2 data showed that most lakes (90% of 636 lakes) had a quasi-horizontal LSH profile (measurement uncertainty <0.05 m), and special methods are needed for mountainous lakes or shallow lakes to extract precise LSHs.

Land cover classification method considering the contribution of waveform characteristic parameters and the pooling scale

In view of current land cover classification methods using the full-waveform characteristic parameters from spaceborne lasers, land cover categories are misclassified because the extracted features cannot accurately distinguish various types of features. We propose a land cover classification method that considers the contribution of waveform feature parameters and the pooling scale. First, the waveform after preprocessing and Gaussian decomposition is characteristic extracted and roughly classified, and the importance of each waveform feature parameter is evaluated and sorted. The best feature parameter set is determined by backward selection of the waveform feature parameters. Moreover, the original waveforms are pooled at different scales, and the correlations between ground objects after pooling are compared with the correlations between the original waveforms to ensure the stability of the correlation between various waveforms of ground objects and the peak information of waveforms while reducing the amount of data. Finally, random forest (RF) and support vector machine classifiers are selected to complete the land cover classification experiment based on the optimal waveform parameter set and the optimal pooling scale. We use ICESat (ice, cloud, and land elevation satellite) and Geoscience Laser Altimeter System data from the Beijing–Tianjin–Hebeii region for verification. The results show that, based on the RF classifier, the overall classification accuracy was 86.95%, and the use of spaceborne laser waveform characteristic parameters compared with the classification method greatly improved the accuracy, fully verifying the feasibility of the method in classifying land cover types. These findings can provide a technical basis for the application and promotion of GaoFen 7(GF-7) and other follow-up, satellite-based laser altimetry data in the fine-grained classification of land cover types.

Precision and Bias Comparison Between Laser and Radar Altimetry Data in the Amundsen Sea Embayment and the Lambert-Amery System of Antarctica

This article focuses on the precision and bias of laser altimetry data [Ice, Cloud, and Land Elevation Satellite (ICESat)] and radar altimetry data (Envisat) L2 products during the contemporary period from 2003 to 2008 in the Amundsen Sea Embayment (ASE) in West Antarctica (an ice loss region) and the Lambert-Amery System (LAS) in East Antarctica (an ice gain region). We used the crossover method to obtain the elevation differences between ICESat tracks, Envisat tracks, and between ICESat and Envisat tracks. The crossover points were generated and the difference of each crossover pair was calculated as raw data. The standard deviations were then computed from the raw data in a grid cell for both ICESat and Envisat. The precision of both satellites varied as a function of the surface slope in the abovementioned two regions, from 6.6 to 16.6 cm for the ICESat data and from 0.11 to 0.35 m for the Envisat data. The crossover points from ICESat-Envisat showed a mean bias of 0.55 ± 4.00 m for the ASE and 0.45 ± 0.99 m for the LAS, in accordance with the penetration depth of the radar altimetry. The relationship between the precision of the satellite measurements with the slope of the ice sheet and the ice velocity in the study area showed that the regions with gentle slopes and low velocity obtained a better precision of altimetry data.

Spatio-temporal variability of Antarctic sea-ice thickness and volume obtained from ICESat data using an innovative algorithm

We use total (sea ice plus snow) freeboard as estimated from Ice, Cloud and land Elevation Satellite (ICESat) Geophysical Laser Altimeter System (GLAS) observations to compute Antarctic sea-ice thickness and volume. In order to overcome assumptions made about the relationship between snow depth and total freeboard or biases in snow depth products from satellite microwave radiometry, we implement a new algorithm. We treat the sea ice-snow system as one layer with reduced density, which we approximate by means of a priori information about the snow depth to sea-ice thickness ratio. We derive this a priori information directly from ICESat total freeboard data using empirical equations relating in-situ measurements of total freeboard to snow depth or sea-ice thickness. We apply our new algorithm (one-layer method or OLM), which uses the buoyancy equation approach without the need for auxiliary snow depth data, to compute sea-ice thickness for every ICESat GLAS footprint from a valid total freeboard. An improved method for sea-ice volume retrieval is also used to derive ice volume at 6.25 km scale. Spatio-temporal variations of sea-ice thickness and volume are then analyzed in the circumpolar Antarctic as well as its six sea sectors: Pacific Ocean, Indian Ocean, Weddell East, Weddell West, Bell-Amund Sea, and Ross Sea, under both interannual and seasonal scales. Because the OLM algorithm relies on only one parameter, the total freeboard, and is independent of auxiliary snow depth information, it is believed to become a viable alternative sea-ice thickness retrieval method for satellite altimetry.

Potential and limitations of satellite laser altimetry for monitoring water surface dynamics: ICESat for US lakes

Elevation measurements from the Ice, Cloud and Land Elevation Satellite (ICESat) have been applied to monitor dynamics of lakes and other surface water bodies. Despite such potential, the true utility of ICEsat--more generally, satellite laser altimetry--for continuously tracking surface water dynamics over time has not been adequately assessed, especially in the continental or global contexts. This study analyzed elevation derived from ICESat data for the conterminous United States and examined the potential and limitations of satellite laser altimetry in monitoring the water level dynamics. Owing to a lack of spatially-explicit ground-based water-level data, the high-fidelity land elevation data acquired by airborne lidar were firstly resorted to quantify ICESat’s ranging accuracy. Trend and frequency analyses were then performed to evaluate how reliably ICESat could capture water-level dynamics over a range of temporal scales, as compared to in-situ gauge measurements. The analytical results showed that ICESat had a vertical ranging error of 0.16 m at the footprint level—an lower limit on the detectable range of water-level dynamics. The sparsity of data over time was identified as a major factor limiting the use of ICESat for water dynamics studies. Of all the US lakes, only 361 had reliable ICESat measurements for more than two flight passes. Even for those lakes with sufficient temporal coverage, ICESat failed to capture the true interannual water-level dynamics in 32% of the cases. Our frequency analysis suggested that even with a repeat cycle of two months, ICESat could capture only 60% of the variations in water-level dynamics for at most 34% of the US lakes. To capture 60% of the water-level variation for most of the US lakes, a weekly repeated cycle (e.g., less than 5 d) is needed – a requirement difficult to meet in current designs of spaceborne laser altimetry. Overall, the results highlight that current or near-future satellite laser missions, though with high ranging accuracies, are unlikely to fulfill the general needs in remotely monitoring water surface dynamics for lakes or reservoirs. PRECISION AND DEVIATION COMPARISON BETWEEN ICESAT AND ENVISAT IN TYPICAL ICE GAINING AND LOSING REGIONS OF ANTARCTICA

Abstract. This paper analyzes the precision and deviation of elevations acquired from Envisat and The Ice, Cloud and Land Elevation Satellite (ICESat) over typical ice gaining and losing regions, i.e. Lambert-Amery System (LAS) in east Antarctica, and Amundsen Sea Sector (ASS) in west Antarctica, during the same period from 2003 to 2008. We used GLA12 dataset of ICESat and Level 2 data of Envisat. Data preprocessing includes data filtering, projection transformation and track classification. Meanwhile, the slope correction is applied to Envisat data and saturation correction for ICESat data. Then the crossover analysis was used to obtain the crossing points of the ICESat tracks, Envisat tracks and ICESat-Envisat tracks separately. The two tracks we chose for cross-over analysis should be in the same campaign for ICESat (within 33 days) or the same cycle for Envisat (within 35 days).The standard deviation of a set of elevation residuals at time-coincident crossovers is calculated as the precision of each satellite while the mean value is calculated as the deviation of ICESat-Envisat. Generally, the ICESat laser altimeter gets a better precision than the Envisat radar altimeter. For Amundsen Sea Sector, the ICESat precision is found to vary from 8.9 cm to 17 cm and the Envisat precision varies from 0.81 m to 1.57 m. For LAS area, the ICESat precision is found to vary from 6.7 cm to 14.3 cm and the Envisat precision varies from 0.46 m to 0.81 m. Comparison result between Envisat and ICESat elevations shows a mean difference of 0.43 ±7.14 m for Amundsen Sea Sector and 0.53 ± 1.23 m over LAS.

Mapping vegetation heights in China using slope correction ICESat data, SRTM, MODIS-derived and climate data

Vegetation height is an important parameter for biomass assessment and vegetation classification. However, vegetation height data over large areas are difficult to obtain. The existing vegetation height data derived from the Ice, Cloud and land Elevation Satellite (ICESat) data only include laser footprints in relatively flat forest regions (<5°). Thus, a large portion of ICESat data over sloping areas has not been used. In this study, we used a new slope correction method to improve the accuracy of estimates of vegetation heights for regions where slopes fall between 5° and 15°. The new method enabled us to use more than 20% additional laser data compared with the existing vegetation height data which only uses ICESat data in relatively flat areas (slope<5°) in China. With the vegetation height data extracted from ICESat footprints and ancillary data including Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) derived data (canopy cover, reflectances and leaf area index), climate data, and topographic data, we developed a wall to wall vegetation height map of China using the Random Forest algorithm. We used the data from 416 field measurements to validate the new vegetation height product. The coefficient of determination (R2) and RMSE of the new vegetation height product were 0.89 and 4.73m respectively. The accuracy of the product is significantly better than that of the two existing global forest height products produced by Lefsky (2010) and Simard et al. (2011), when compared with the data from 227 field measurements in our study area. The new vegetation height data demonstrated clear distinctions among forest, shrub and grassland, which is promising for improving the classification of vegetation and above-ground forest biomass assessment in China.

Decline of Geladandong Glacier Elevation in Yangtze River’s Source Region: Detection by ICESat and Assessment by Hydroclimatic Data

Several studies have indicated that glaciers in the Qinghai-Tibet plateau are thinning, resulting in reduced water supplies to major rivers such as the Yangtze, Yellow, Lancang, Indus, Ganges, Brahmaputra in China, and south Asia. Three rivers in the upstream of Yangtze River originate from glaciers around the Geladandong snow mountain group in central Tibet. Here we used elevation observations from Ice, Cloud, and land Elevation Satellite (ICESat) and reference elevations from a 3-arc-second digital elevation model (DEM) of Shuttle Radar Terrestrial Mission (SRTM), assisted with Landsat-7 images, to detect glacier elevation changes in the western (A), central (B), and eastern (C) regions of Geladandong. Robust fitting was used to determine rates of glacier elevation changes in regions with dense ICESat data, whereas a new method called rate averaging was employed to find rates in regions of low data density. The rate of elevation change was −0.158 ± 0.066 m·a−1 over 2003–2009 in the entire Geladandong and it was −0.176 ± 0.102 m·a−1 over 2003–2008 in Region C (by robust fitting). The rates in Regions A, B, and C were −0.418 ± 0.322 m·a−1 (2000–2009), −0.432 ± 0.020 m·a−1 (2000–2003), and −0.321 ± 0.139 m·a−1 (2000–2008) (by rate averaging). We used in situ hydroclimatic dataset to assess these negative rates: the glacier thinning was caused by temperature rises around Geladandong, based on the temperature records over 1979–2009, 1957–2013, and 1966–2013 at stations Tuotuohe, Wudaoliang, and Anduo. The thinning Geladandong glaciers led to increased discharges recorded at the river gauge stations Tuotuohe and Chumda over 1956–2012. An unabated Geladandong glacier melting will reduce its long-term water supply to the Yangtze River Basin, causing irreversible socioeconomic consequences and seriously degrading the ecological system of the Yangtze River Basin.

An Alternative Approach for Registration of High-Resolution Satellite Optical Imagery and ICESat Laser Altimetry Data.

Satellite optical images and altimetry data are two major data sources used in Antarctic research. The integration use of these two datasets is expected to provide more accurate and higher quality products, during which data registration is the first issue that needs to be solved. This paper presents an alternative approach for the registration of high-resolution satellite optical images and ICESat (Ice, Cloud, and land Elevation Satellite) laser altimetry data. Due to the sparse distribution characteristic of the ICESat laser point data, it is difficult and even impossible to find same-type conjugate features between ICESat data and satellite optical images. The method is implemented in a direct way to correct the point-to-line inconsistency in image space through 2D transformation between the projected terrain feature points and the corresponding 2D image lines, which is simpler than discrepancy correction in object space that requires stereo images for 3D model construction, and easier than the indirect way of image orientation correction via photogrammetric bundle adjustment. The correction parameters are further incorporated into imaging model through RPCs (Rational Polynomial Coefficients) generation/regeneration for the convenience of photogrammetric applications. The experimental results by using the ASTER (Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer) images and ZY-3 (Ziyuan-3 satellite) images for registration with ICESat data showed that sub-pixel level registration accuracies were achieved after registration, which have validated the feasibility and effectiveness of the presented approach.

Changes in the ablation zones of glaciers in the western Himalaya and the Karakoram between 1972 and 2015

Observed estimates of changes in the Himalayan and Karakoram glaciers remain ambiguous because of limited knowledge regarding complex glacier behaviour, low quality of remote sensing data, and sparse ground-based monitoring. Remote sensing has indicated anomalous behaviour of glaciers in the Karakoram during the past two decades, attracting scientists' attention to the region. In this context, this study has made detailed estimates of changes in thickness and area of two glaciers (the Sachen in the western Himalaya and the Burche in the Karakoram) to facilitate understanding of recent glacier changes and their potential impacts on water resources. This study used several datasets, including Landsat, the Shuttle Radar Topographic Mission (SRTM), the Ice, Cloud and Land Elevation Satellite (ICESat), and differential Global Positioning System (dGPS) in-situ measurements, from the period 1972 through 2015. The extent of debris cover increased significantly between 1972 and 2014, while the total glacierized area decreased slightly. Further, our study estimated thickness changes after removing recognizable biases and seasonal variations, computed through comparisons of ICESat data with dGPS. A thinning trend occurred between 2000 and 2015, suggesting that the glaciers in the western part of the Karakoram and Himalaya regions have not recently gained mass. This study also found non-uniform variations within different zones of the glaciers. Avalanches have fed most of the Karakoram glaciers, providing spatially heterogeneous thickness changes. The frequency of observations, data quality, acquisition time, and local weather affect our observations of temporal changes. Careful assessment of regularly acquired remote-sensing and ground-based observations should reduce uncertainty regarding estimates of glacier changes for management of water resources and associated hazards.

Monitoring glacial thickness changes in the Tibetan Plateau derived from ICESat data

Monitoring glacier changes is essential for estimating the water mass balance of the Tibetan Plateau. Recent research indicates that glaciers at individual regions on the Tibetan Plateau and surroundings are shrinking and thinning during the last decades. Studies considering large regions often ignored however the impact of locally varying weather conditions and terrain characteristics on glacial evolution, i.e. the impact of orographic precipitation and variation in solar radiation. Our hypothesis is therefore that adjacent glaciers of opposite orientation change in a different way. In this study, we exploit Ice Cloud and land Elevation Satellite (ICESat)/ Geoscience Laser Altimetry System (GLAS) data in combination with the NASA Shuttle Radar Topographic Mission (SRTM) digital elevation model (DEM) and the Global Land Ice Measurements from Space (GLIMS) glacier mask to estimate glacial thickness change trends between 2003 and 2009 on the whole Tibetan Plateau. The results show that 90 glacial areas could be distinguished. Most of observed glacial areas on the Tibetan Plateau are thinning, except for some glaciers in the Northwest. In general, glacial elevations on the whole Tibetan Plateau decreased at an average rate of -0.17 ± 0.47 meters per year (m a-1) between 2003 and 2009, taking together glaciers of any size, distribution, and location of the observed glacial area. Moreover, the results show that glacial elevation changes indeed strongly depend on the relative position in a mountain range.

For example, laser altimetry systems are much more accurate than DEMs derived by correlation from imaging systems. On the other hand, DEMs usually have a superior spatial resolution and extended spatial coverage. We present in this paper an overview of the SERAC (Surface Elevation Reconstruction And Change detection) system, designed to cope with the data complexity and the computation of elevation change histories. SERAC simultaneously determines the ice sheet surface shape and the time-series of elevation changes for surface patches whose size depends on the ruggedness of the surface and the point distribution of the sensors involved. By incorporating different sensors, SERAC is a true fusion system that generates the best plausible result (time series of elevation changes) a result that is better than the sum of its individual parts. We follow this up with an example of the Helmheim gacier, involving ICESat, ATM and LVIS laser altimetry data, together with ASTER DEMs.

A comparative study of changes in the Lambert Glacier/Amery Ice Shelf system, East Antarctica, during 2004–2008 using gravity and surface elevation observations

ABSTRACTWe present results of a regional comparative study of surface mass changes from 2004 to 2008 based on Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE), The Ice, Cloud and Land Elevation Satellite (ICESat) and CHINARE observations over the Lambert Glacier/Amery Ice Shelf system (LAS). Estimation of the ICESat mass change rates benefitted from the density measurements along the CHINARE traverse and a spatial density adjustment method for reducing the effect of spatial density variations. In the high-elevation inland region, a positive trend was estimated from both ICESat and GRACE data, which is in line with the CHINARE accumulation measurements. In the coastal region, there were areas with high level accumulations in both ICESat and GRACE trend maps. In many high flow-speed glacier areas, negative mass change rates may be caused by dynamic ice flow discharges that have surpassed the snow accumulation. Overall, the mass change rate estimate in the LAS of 2004–2008 from the GRACE, ICESat and CHINARE data is 5.41 ± 4.59 Gt a−1, indicating a balanced to slightly positive mass trend. Along with other published results, this suggests that a longer-term positive mass trend in the LAS may have slowed in recent years.

A NEW HIGH-RESOLUTION ELEVATION MODEL OF GREENLAND DERIVED FROM TANDEM-X

Abstract. In this paper we present for the first time the new digital elevation model (DEM) for Greenland produced by the TanDEM-X (TerraSAR add-on for digital elevation measurement) mission. The new, full coverage DEM of Greenland has a resolution of 0.4 arc seconds corresponding to 12 m. It is composed of more than 7.000 interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) DEM scenes. X-Band SAR penetrates the snow and ice pack by several meters depending on the structures within the snow, the acquisition parameters, and the dielectricity constant of the medium. Hence, the resulting SAR measurements do not represent the surface but the elevation of the mean phase center of the backscattered signal. Special adaptations on the nominal TanDEM-X DEM generation are conducted to maintain these characteristics and not to raise or even deform the DEM to surface reference data. For the block adjustment, only on the outer coastal regions ICESat (Ice, Cloud, and land Elevation Satellite) elevations as ground control points (GCPs) are used where mostly rock and surface scattering predominates. Comparisons with ICESat data and snow facies are performed. In the inner ice and snow pack, the final X-Band InSAR DEM of Greenland lies up to 10 m below the ICESat measurements. At the outer coastal regions it corresponds well with the GCPs. The resulting DEM is outstanding due to its resolution, accuracy and full coverage. It provides a high resolution dataset as basis for research on climate change in the arctic.

Mass, Volume and Velocity of the Antarctic Ice Sheet: Present-Day Changes and Error Effects

This study examines present-day changes of the Antarctic ice sheet (AIS) by means of different data sets. We make use of monthly gravity field solutions acquired by the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) to study mass changes of the AIS for a 10-year period. In addition to "standard" solutions of release 05, solutions based on radial base functions were used. Both solutions reveal an increased mass loss in recent years. For a 6-year period surface-height changes were inferred from laser altimetry data provided by the Ice, Cloud, and land Elevation Satellite (ICESat). The basin-scale volume trends were converted into mass changes and were compared with the GRACE estimates for the same period. Focussing on the Thwaites Glacier, Landsat optical imagery was utilised to determine ice-flow velocities for a period of more than two decades. This data set was extended by means of high-resolution synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data from the TerraSAR-X mission, revealing an accelerated ice flow of all parts of the glacier. ICESat data over the Thwaites Glacier were complemented by digital elevation models inferred from TanDEM-X data. This extended data set exhibits an increased surface lowering in recent times. Passive microwave remote sensing data prove the long-term stability of the accumulation rates in a low accumulation zone in East Antarctica over several decades. Finally, we discuss the main error sources of present-day mass-balance estimates: the glacial isostatic adjustment effect for GRACE as well as the biases between laser operational periods and the volume-mass conversion for ICESat.
