AbstractIn this research paper, the shunt active filter (SHAF) is used to improve the power quality of electrical network by mitigating the harmonics with the help of different control strategies (p-q control strategy, Id-Iqcontrol strategy, PHC control strategy) for three phase three wire system. It is quite difficult to optimize the performance of power system networks using conventional methods, because of complex nature of the systems that are highly non-linear and non-stationary. Three phase reference current waveforms generated by the proposed schemes are tracked by three phase voltage source converter in a hysteresis band control scheme. The performance of proposed control strategies has been evaluated in terms of harmonic mitigation and DC link voltage regulation under various source voltage conditions. The proposed SHAF with different control strategies is able to eliminate uncertainty in the system and SHAF gains outstanding compensation abilities. The detailed simulation results using MATLAB/Simulink software are presented to support the feasibility of the proposed control strategy.

Design of ANN-based adaptive hysteresis band control scheme for compensation of THD and reactive power demand in PV tied grid system using DSTATCOM

This paper presents an artificial neural network (ANN)-based distribution static compensator (DSTATCOM) using back propagation (BP) method for improving compensation of THD and reactive power demand in PV tied grid system. The vital function of this DSTATCOM is compensation of current harmonics, reactive power demand, and maintains unit power factor. A unit vector template generation (UVTG) technique is used to estimate reference source current. The back propagation method-based ANN has been adopted for evaluation of adaptive hysteresis band (AHB). The performance of the ANN-based AHB is compared with analytical method-based AHB and fixed hysteresis band (FHB). The performance of the proposed test system is designed and analysed in MATLAB/Simulink environment. The obtained results are validated in real-time simulation using Xilinx system generator (XSG).

The SHAF with proposed Type-2 FLC using Gaussian MF is able to eliminate the uncertainty in the system and SHAF gains outstanding compensation abilities. The detailed real-time results using real-time digital simulator are presented to support the feasibility of proposed control strategies.

Performance analysis and real-time implementation of shunt active filter Id-Iq control strategy with type-1 and type-2 FLC triangular M.F

This research article presents a novel approach based on an instantaneous active and reactive current component (id-iq) theory for generating reference currents for shunt active filter (SHAF). Three-phase reference current waveforms generated by proposed scheme are tracked by the three-phase voltage source converter in a hysteresis band control scheme. The performance of the proposed control strategy has been evaluated in terms of harmonic mitigation and DC link voltage regulation under various source conditions. In order to maintain DC link voltage constant and to generate the compensating reference currents, we have developed type-1 fuzzy logic controller (T1FLC) and type-2 FLC (T2FLC) triangular M.F. The SHAF with proposed type-1 and type-2 FLCs using triangular M.F is able to eliminate the uncertainty in the system. By using T2FLC triangular M.F, SHAF gains outstanding compensation abilities. The detailed simulation results using MATLAB/SIMULINK software are presented to support the feasibility of proposed control strategy. To validate the proposed approach, the system is also implemented on OPAL-RT (real-time) simulator, and adequate results are reported for its verifications. Copyright © 2012 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

The proposed SHAF with different fuzzy M.F.s is able to eliminate the uncertainty in the system and SHAF gains outstanding compensation abilities. The detailed simulation results using MATLAB/SIMULINK software are presented to support the feasibility of proposed control strategy. To validate the proposed approach, the system is also implemented on a real time digital simulator and adequate results are reported for its verifications.

Comparison of control strategies for DSTATCOM in three-phase, four-wire distribution system for power quality improvement under various source voltage and load conditions

This paper presents comparison of three different control strategies to generate reference current components for Distribution Static Compensator (DSTATCOM). Reference currents are tracked by a three-phase voltage source converter in a hysteresis band control scheme. These methods are instantaneous reactive power (IRP) theory, symmetrical component (SC) theory and an improved instantaneous active and reactive current component (IARCC) theory. The performance of three methods has been evaluated under various source voltage and load conditions with new IEEE Standard 1459 power definitions. A comparative study of their performance in terms of rms value of source current, Total Harmonic Distortion (THD), supply power factor and compensator ratings is also presented. A three-phase, four-wire distribution system supplying linear as well as non-linear load is considered for simulation study which is carried out using MATLAB/SIMULINK software. Under balanced and sinusoidal source voltage conditions, all three control strategies similar performance while an improved IARCC theory outperforms, particularly, under unbalanced and distorted source voltage conditions.

Control strategies for harmonic mitigation and power factor correction using shunt active filter under various source voltage conditions

This paper gives a new insight into the concept of load compensation using shunt active filter (SAF) under ideal and non-ideal source voltage conditions. A novel approach based on an improved instantaneous active and reactive current component method is proposed. The performance of the proposed control strategy has been compared with instantaneous reactive power theory, symmetrical component theory and dq theory. SAF has been realized by three-phase voltage source converter. Reference currents generated by control strategies has been tracked by a SAF in a hysteresis band control scheme. The performance of the proposed scheme is evaluated in terms of reactive power compensation, reduction in magnitude of source currents, compensator currents, and harmonic compensation as per IEEE-519 standard. To ascertain the viability of the proposed control algorithm, the performance is evaluated under different source voltage conditions with the IEEE Standard-1459 power definitions. Variation in magnitude as well as harmonic content of source voltage has been considered. Under balanced sinusoidal source voltage condition, all control strategies congregate to similar results. Under unbalanced sinusoidal source voltage condition, dq theory and proposed theory have shown similar performance. However, under distorted source voltage conditions, an improved instantaneous active and reactive current component theory presents superior performance. A three-phase, three-wire distribution system supplying non-linear load is considered for simulation study. Simulation results from a complete model of SAF are presented to validate and compare the control strategies.

The use of instantaneous symmetrical components for balancing a delta connected load and power factor correction

Abstract This paper presents a novel way of generating the reference currents for an active filter and/or a static compensator. A compensator structure is proposed which is capable of balancing an unbalanced delta-connected load that may also draw harmonic currents. In addition to balancing the load, the supply side power factor is also made unity. The theory of instantaneous symmetrical components is used here to obtain three phase reference currents that are to be tracked by the compensator in a hysteresis band control scheme. The paper demonstrates the feasibility of such as scheme through simulation studies.

A new approach to load balancing and power factor correction in power distribution system

This paper presents a new approach for generating reference currents for an active filter and/or a static compensator. It is assumed that the compensator is connected to a load that may either be connected in star or in delta. The load can be unbalanced and may also draw harmonic currents. The purpose of the compensating scheme is to balance the load, as well as make the supply side power factor a desired value. The authors use the theory of instantaneous symmetrical components to obtain an algorithm to compute three phase reference currents which, when injected to the power system, produce desired results. They also propose a suitable compensator structure that will track the reference currents in a hysteresis band control scheme. Finally, the feasibility of such a scheme is demonstrated through simulation studies.
