Association and interaction analysis of NLRP3 gene polymorphisms with hypertension risk: a case-control study in China.

The NLRP3 inflammasome, a pivotal mechanism regulating inflammatory responses and featuring the pyrin domain containing 3 (NLRP3) within the NOD-like receptor family, is widely recognized as a central pathogenic factor in cardiovascular diseases. The present study endeavors to delve into the correlation and potential interplay between the rs10754558 polymorphism of NLRP3 and the predisposition to hypertension among the Chinese adult population. All the participants who came from a community in Bengbu, China were investigated by being interviewed with a questionnaire. Overall, 354 paired case-control participants were analyzed. Genomic DNA was extracted from 5ml venous blood using the Tiangen DNA extraction kit. The rs10754558 polymorphism of the NLRP3 gene was genotyped by TaqMan allelic discrimination real-time PCR.The association between the rs10754558 polymorphism and hypertension risk was investigated by a logistic regression analysis. Furthermore, an additive interaction analysis was conducted using related indicators, including the relative excess risk due to interaction (RERI), attributable proportion due to interaction (AP), and synergy index (SI). Participants carrying the GG genotype were more likely to develop hypertension than participants carrying the CC genotype (adjusted odds ratio [OR]: 2.16, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.33-3.52). A significant additive interaction between the NLRP3 polymorphism and obesity status concerning the risk of hypertension was observed, as estimated by all indicators: RERI (1.12, 95% CI: 0.70-1.5), AP (0.34, 95% CI: 0.14-0.53), and SI (1.92, 95% CI: 1.03-3.59). The values of RERI (1.74, 95% CI: 0.37-3.11), AP (0.46, 95% CI: 0.21-0.70), and SI (2.62, 95% CI: 1.18-5.83) showed that a significant interaction between the rs10754558 polymorphism and a family history of hypertension. Our findings indicate a significant association between the NLRP3 rs10754558 polymorphism and the risk of hypertension in Chinese adults. Moreover, a notable additive interaction emerges between NLRP3 polymorphisms and obesity status, further amplifying the risk of hypertension.

Effectiveness and safety of hydrogen inhalation therapy as an additional treatment for hypertension in real-world practice: a retrospective, observational study in China

AimTo evaluate the real-life effectiveness and safety of hydrogen inhalation (HI) therapy as an additional treatment in Chinese adults with hypertension.MethodsThis observational, retrospective clinical study included hypertensive patients receiving routine antihypertensives with or without HI initiation from 2018 to 2023. Participants were assigned to the HI group or non-HI group (control group) after propensity score matching. The changes in mean systolic blood pressure (SBP) level during the 24-week follow-up period in different groups were examined primarily. The secondary outcome was the changes in diastolic blood pressure (DBP) and blood pressure (BP) control rate during the study. Several subgroup and sensitivity analyses were performed to confirm the robustness of our main findings. Adverse event (AE) was also assessed in patients of both groups.ResultsIn total, we selected 2,364 patients into the analysis. Both mean SBP and DBP levels significantly decreased in the HI group compared to control group at each follow-up visit with the between group difference of −4.63 mm Hg (95% CI, −6.51 to −2.74) at week 8, −6.69 mm Hg (95% CI, −8.54 to −4.85) at week 16, −7.81 mm Hg (95% CI, −9.57 to −6.04) at week 24 for SBP, and −1.83 mm Hg (95% CI, −3.21 to −0.45) at week 8, −2.57 mm Hg (95% CI, −3.97 to −1.17) at week 16, −2.89 mm Hg (95% CI, −4.24 to −1.54) at week 24 for DBP. Patients in the HI group were more likely to attain controlled BP at the follow-up period with odds ratio of 1.44 (95% CI, 1.21–1.72) at week 8, 1.90 (95% CI, 1.59–2.27) at week 16, and 2.24 (95% CI, 1.87–2.68) at the end. The trends of subgroup and sensitivity analyses were mostly consistent with the main analysis. The incidences of AEs were similar between the HI group and control group with all p-value >0.05.ConclusionThe HI therapy is related to significant amelioration in BP levels with acceptable safety profile in Chinese hypertensive adults after 24 weeks of treatment, building a clinical ground for further research to evaluate the antihypertensive effect of HI therapy.

The inverse associations of glycine and histidine in diet with hyperlipidemia and hypertension

BackgroundAmino acids are crucial for nutrition and metabolism, regulating metabolic pathways and activities vital to organismal health and stability. Glycine and histidine act as potent antioxidants and anti-inflammatory agents; however, limited knowledge exists regarding the associations between these amino acids and hyperlipidemia and hypertension. The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between dietary glycine and histidine, and hyperlipidemia and hypertension.MethodsThis population-based cross-sectional study evaluated the influence of dietary glycine and histidine, as well as their combined effect, on hyperlipidemia and hypertension in Chinese adults participating in the Nutrition Health Atlas Project (NHAP). General characteristics were acquired using a verified Internet-based Dietary Questionnaire for the Chinese. Binary logistic regression, along with gender, age groups, and median energy intake subgroup analyses, was employed to investigate the associations between dietary glycine and histidine and hyperlipidemia and hypertension. A sensitivity analysis was conducted to assess the impact of excluding individuals who smoke and consume alcohol on the results.ResultsBased on the study’s findings, 418 out of 1091 cases had hyperlipidemia, whereas 673 had hypertension. A significant inverse relationship was found between dietary glycine, histidine, and glycine + histidine and hyperlipidemia and hypertension. Compared with the 1st and 2nd tertiles, the multivariable-adjusted odd ratios (ORs) (95% confidence intervals) (CIs) of the 3rd tertile of dietary glycine for hyperlipidemia and hypertension were 0.64 (0.49–0.84) (p < 0.01) and 0.70 (0.56–0.88) (p < 0.001); histidine was 0.63 (0.49–0.82) (p < 0.01) and 0.80 (0.64–0.99) (p < 0.01); and glycine + histidine was 0.64 (0.49–0.83) (p < 0.01) and 0.74 (0.59–0.92) (p < 0.001), respectively. High glycine and high histidine (HGHH) intake were negatively associated with hyperlipidemia and hypertension OR (95% CIs) were: 0.71 (0.58–0.88) (p < 0.01) and 0.73 (0.61–0.87) (p < 0.01), respectively.ConclusionsDietary glycine and histidine, as well as their HGHH group, revealed an inverse relationship with hyperlipidemia and hypertension. Further investigations are needed to validate these findings.

Associations of E-proteinoid 3 receptor genetic polymorphisms with salt sensitivity, longitudinal blood pressure changes, and hypertension incidence in Chinese adults.

The E-proteinoid 3 receptor (PTGER3), a member of the prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) subtype receptor, belongs to the G-protein-coupled superfamily of receptors. Animal studies have demonstrated its involvement in salt sensitivity by regulating sodium reabsorption. This study aimed to investigate the association between genetic variants of PTGER3 and salt sensitivity, longitudinal blood pressure (BP) changes, and the incidence of hypertension in Chinese adults. A chronic salt intake intervention was conducted involving 514 adults from 124 families in the 2004 Baoji Salt-Sensitivity Study Cohort in northern China. These participants followed a 3-day regular baseline diet, followed by a 7-day low-salt diet (3.0g/d) and a 7-day high-salt diet (18g/d), and were subsequently followed for 14years. The findings revealed a significant relationship between the single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) rs17482751 of PTGER3 and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) response to high salt intervention. Additionally, SNPs rs11209733, rs3765894, and rs2268062 were significantly associated with longitudinal changes in systolic blood pressure (SBP), DBP, and mean arterial pressure (MAP) during the 14-year follow-up period. SNP rs6424414 was significantly associated with longitudinal changes in DBP over 14years. Finally, SNP rs17482751 showed a significant correlation with the incidence of hypertension over 14years. These results emphasize the significant role of PTGER3 gene polymorphism in salt sensitivity, longitudinal BP changes, and the development of hypertension in the Chinese population.

Vaccination intentions of hypertensive Chinese individuals during the COVID-19 epidemic: a structural equation modeling study

ObjectiveGiven the high prevalence of hypertension among Chinese adults, this population is at a significantly increased risk of severe COVID-19 complications. The purpose of this study is to assess the willingness of Chinese hypertensive adults to receive the COVID-19 vaccine and to identify the diverse factors that shape their vaccination decisions.MethodsSampling was conducted utilizing multistage stratified random sampling, and ultimately, a total of 886 adult hypertensive patients from Luzhou City in Southwest China were included in this study. The questionnaire design was based on the Theory of Planned Behaviour and was used to investigate their willingness to be vaccinated with COVID-19. Structural equation modeling was employed for data analysis.ResultsThe results showed that 75.6% of hypertensive individuals were willing to receive COVID-19 vaccination. The structural equation modeling revealed that Subjective Norms (path coefficient = 0.361, CR = 8.049, P < 0.001) and Attitudes (path coefficient = 0.253, CR = 4.447, P < 0.001) had positive effects on vaccination willingness, while Perceived Behavioral Control (path coefficient=-0.004, CR=-0.127, P = 0.899) had no significant impact on Behavioral Attitudes. Mediation analysis indicated that Knowledge (indirect path coefficient = 0.032, LLCI = 0.014, ULCI = 0.058), Risk Perception (indirect path coefficient = 0.077, LLCI = 0.038, ULCI = 0.124), and Subjective Norms (indirect path coefficient = 0.044, LLCI = 0.019, ULCI = 0.087) significantly influenced vaccination willingness through Attitudes as a mediating factor.ConclusionThe willingness of hypertensive individuals to receive the COVID-19 vaccination is not satisfactory. The Theory of Planned Behavior provides valuable insights into understanding their vaccination intentions. Efforts should be concentrated on enhancing the subjective norms, attitudes, and knowledge about vaccination of hypertensive patients.

Positive Associations of Perfluoroalkyl and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances With Hypertension May Be Attenuated by Endogenous Sex Hormones: A Nationally Representative Cross-Sectional Study.

Perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substance (PFAS) has endocrine-disrupting properties and may affect blood pressure. Endogenous hormones also play a crucial role in the progression of hypertension. However, their interaction with hypertension remains to be explored. This study included 10 794 adults aged ≥18 years from the China National Human Biomonitoring program. Weighted multiple logistic regression and linear regression were used to examine the associations of serum PFAS with hypertension, diastolic blood pressure, and systolic blood pressure. Joint effects of PFAS mixtures on hypertension, diastolic blood pressure, and systolic blood pressure were evaluated using quantile-based g-computation. Additive and multiplicative interactions were used to assess the role of PFAS with testosterone and estradiol on hypertension. The prevalence of hypertension in Chinese adults was 35.50%. Comparing the fourth quartile with the first quartile, odds ratio (95% CI) of hypertension were 1.53 (1.13-2.09) for perfluorononanoic acid, 1.40 (1.03-1.91) for perfluorodecanoic acid, 1.34 (1.02-1.78) for perfluoroheptane sulfonic acid, and 1.46 (1.07-1.99) for perfluorooctane sulfonic acid. Moreover, PFAS mixtures, with perfluorononanoic acid contributing the most, were positively associated with hypertension, diastolic blood pressure, and systolic blood pressure. PFAS and endogenous hormones had an antagonistic interaction in hypertension. For example, the relative excess risk ratio, attributable proportion, and synergy index for perfluorononanoic acid and estradiol were -3.61 (-4.68 to -2.53), -1.65 (-2.59 to -0.71), and 0.25 (0.13-0.47), respectively. Perfluorononanoic acid, perfluorodecanoic acid, perfluoroheptane sulfonic acid, perfluorooctane sulfonic acid, and PFAS mixtures showed positive associations with hypertension, systolic blood pressure, and diastolic blood pressure. Positive associations of PFAS with hypertension might be attenuated by increased levels of endogenous sex hormones.

Effect of plateletcrit and methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) C677T genotypes on folic acid efficacy in stroke prevention

Previous studies have shown that low platelet count combined with high plasma total homocysteine (tHcy) increased stroke risk and can be lowered by 73% with folic acid. However, the combined role of other platelet activation parameters and the methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) C677T genotypes on stroke risk and folic acid treatment benefit remain to be examined. This study aimed to investigate if platelet activation parameters and MTHFR genotypes jointly impact folic acid treatment efficacy in first stroke prevention. Data were derived from the China Stroke Primary Prevention Trial. This study includes a total of 11,185 adult hypertensive patients with relevant platelet activation parameters and MTHFR genotype data. When simultaneously considering both platelet activation parameters (plateletcrit, platelet count, mean platelet volume, platelet distribution width) and MTHFR genotypes, patients with both low plateletcrit (Q1) and the TT genotype had the highest stroke incidence rate (5.6%) in the enalapril group. This subgroup significantly benefited from folic acid treatment, with a 66% reduction in first stroke (HR: 0.34; 95% CI: 0.14–0.82; p = 0.016). Consistently, the subgroup with low plateletcrit (Q1) and the CC/CT genotype also benefited from folic acid treatment (HR: 0.40; 95% CI: 0.23–0.70; p = 0.001). In Chinese hypertensive adults, low plateletcrit can identify those who may greatly benefit from folic acid treatment, in particular, those with the TT genotype, a subpopulation known to have the highest stroke risk.

Association between six different types of anthropometric indices and arterial stiffness measured by brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity in hypertensive Chinese adults

BackgroundThe associations of body fat parameters with arterial stiffness measured by brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity in hypertensive patients were scarce. MethodsThis cross-sectional study analyzed 4322 hypertensive adults. The correlations between the anthropometric indexes (body mass index [BMI], waist circumference, waist-tohip ratio [WHR], waist-to-height ratio [WHtR], a body shape index [ABSI], body round index [BRI]) and ba-PWV values were analyzed using multivariable linear regression model. ResultsIn both sex categories, linear regression models showed that BMI levels were inversely related to baPWV (adjusted-β per SD increase in male: −0.51, 95% CI -0.66 to −0.36, P < 0.001; female: −0.50, 95% CI -0.63 to −0.37, P < 0.001). Waist circumference positively correlated with baPWV only in male hypertensive individuals. BaPWV positively correlated to WHR or WHtR levels (adjusted-β per SD increase: 0.32, 95% CI 0.21 to 0.43, P < 0.001; 0.64, 95% CI 0.47 to 0.82, P < 0.001; respectively), ABSI (adjusted-β per SD increase for ABSI × 100: 0.27, 95% CI 0.18 to 0.36, P < 0.001) and BRI (adjusted-β per SD increase: 0.64, 95% CI 0.46 to 0.81, P < 0.001) levels. The relationship between anthropometric indices and arterial stiffness based on baPWV values were also consistent. ABSI had the highest predictive power of arterial stiffness (area under the curve, 0.594; P < 0.001). ConclusionIn Chinese adults with hypertension, BMI was inversely related to baPWV, while WHR, WHtR, ABSI and BRI were positively related. Waist circumference positively correlated with baPWV only in male hypertensive individuals.

Network analysis of depression and anxiety symptoms and their associations with life satisfaction among Chinese hypertensive older adults: a cross-sectional study.

Hypertension is one of the most prevalent chronic diseases among the older adult population in China and older adults with hypertension are more susceptible to mental health problems. This study aimed to explore the network structure of depression and anxiety, and their association with life satisfaction (LS) in older adults with hypertension. A total of 4,993 hypertensive individuals aged 60 and above were selected from the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey (CLHLS 2017-2018). The design of the CLHLS study was approved by the Campus Institutional Review Board of Duke University (Pro00062871) and the Biomedical Ethics Committee of Peking University (IRB00001052-13,074). The Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale-10 (CESD-10) and the Generalized Anxiety Disorder Scale-7 (GAD-7) were used to assess depressive and anxiety symptoms. Central and bridge symptoms were identified via "Expected Influence" and "Bridge Expected Influence", respectively. Network stability was assessed using the case-dropping bootstrap technique. Network analysis identified CESD3 (Feeling blue/depressed), GAD4 (Trouble relaxing), and GAD2 (Uncontrollable worry) as the most influential central symptoms in the network of depression and anxiety. Concurrently, GAD1 (Nervousness or anxiety), CESD10 (Sleep disturbances), and CESD1 (Feeling bothered) stand as critical bridge symptoms between depression and anxiety disorders. Moreover, CESD7 (Lack of happiness) exhibited the strongest negative correlation with LS in Chinese hypertensive older adults. This exploratory study represents the first investigation to examine the mutual relationship between depressive and anxiety symptoms among Chinese hypertensive older adults. Interventions addressing targeting bridge symptoms have the potential to alleviate depressive and anxiety symptoms. Furthermore, improving happiness, hope, and sleep quality in this population may mitigate the adverse effects of depression and anxiety on LS.

Associations of total homocysteine and kidney function with all-cause and cause-specific mortality in hypertensive patients: a mediation and joint analysis.

Plasma total homocysteine (tHcy) and kidney function are both associated with mortality risk, but the degree to which kidney function modifies the impact of tHcy on mortality remains unknown. This prospective cohort study included a total of 14,225 hypertensive adults. Cox proportional hazard regression was used to analyze the separate and combined association of tHcy and estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) with all-cause and cause-specific mortality. Mediation analysis was conducted to explore the mediating effect of eGFR. During a median follow-up of 4.0 years, 805 deaths were identified, including 397 deaths from cardiovascular disease (CVD). There were significant, positive relationships of tHcy with all-cause mortality (per 5 μmol/L; HR: 1.09; 95% CI: 1.07, 1.11), CVD mortality (HR: 1.11; 95% CI: 1.08, 1.13), and non-CVD mortality (HR: 1.07; 95% CI: 1.04, 1.10). The proportions of eGFR mediating these relationships were 39.1%, 35.7%, and 49.7%, respectively. There were additive interactions between tHcy and eGFR. Compared with those with low tHcy (<15 μmol/L) and high eGFR (≥90 mL·min-1·1.73 m-2), participants with high tHcy (≥20 μmol/L) and low eGFR (<60 mL·min-1·1.73 m-2) had the highest risk of all-cause mortality (HR: 4.89; 95% CI: 3.81, 6.28), CVD mortality (HR: 5.80; 95% CI: 4.01, 8.40), and non-CVD mortality (HR: 4.25; 95% CI: 3.02, 5.97). In conclusion, among Chinese hypertensive adults, high tHcy and impaired kidney function were independently and jointly associated with higher risks of all-cause and cause-specific mortality. Importantly, kidney function explained most (nearly 40%) of the increased risk of mortality conferred by high tHcy.

Association of plasma homocysteine with peripheral arterial disease in the hypertensive adults: A cross-sectional study.

Increased plasma homocysteine (Hcy) has been identified as one of the important risk factors for cardiovascular disease. However, the association between plasma Hcy and peripheral artery disease (PAD) is still controversial. This study aimed to investigate the association between plasma Hcy and PAD and the potential modifier factors in Chinese hypertensive adults. A total of 25300 hypertensive patients aged 18years or older were included in the analysis in this cross-sectional study. The outcome was PAD, which defined as an ankle-brachial index ≤0.90 in either limb. Multiple logistic regression was used to analyze the relationship between plasma Hcy and PAD. The median plasma Hcy was 14.00 (interquartile range: 11.60-17.80)μmol/L. There was a significant positive association between plasma Hcy and PAD (per SD increment; OR: 1.13; 95% CI: 1.06-1.19). Patients in the upper plasma Hcy tertile (≥16.16μmol/L) were associated with a 53% increased risk of PAD compared with patients in the lower tertile (<12.33μmol/L) after adjustment for multiple potential confounders. Subgroup analyses showed the association between Hcy and PAD was robust among various strata. Among Chinese adults with hypertension, plasma Hcy is an independent risk factor for PAD. This finding may improve the risk stratification of PAD.

Impaired kidney function and the risk of all-cause mortality and cardiovascular disease among Chinese hypertensive adults: Using three different equations to estimate the glomerular filtration rate

ObjectivesWe aimed to seek accurate assessments of the glomerular filtration rate (GFR) in a Chinese hypertensive population to identify individuals at high risk for chronic kidney disease (CKD) progression. Then, the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and all-cause death due to kidney injury were further investigated under appropriate GFR-estimation equations. MethodsIn this prospective follow-up cohort study of 10,171 hypertensive patients, we compared the discrimination power of a trio of GFR-estimation equations using Harrell's C-index, measuring the model fit by calculating the Akaike information criterion. Univariate and multivariable logistic regression analyses were respectively used to calculate the hazard ratio (HR) and 95% confidence interval [CI] values for CKD progression. In addition, we also assessed the risk of CVD and all-cause death with impaired renal function using multivariable-adjusted Cox regression models. ResultsThe Modification of Diet in Renal Disease (MDRD) equation showed the highest C-index range for the predicted probability of CKD progression in the fully adjusted model. During MDRD analysis, a low eGFR (60–89 mL/min/1.73m2 or < 60 mL/min/1.73m2) was an independent risk factor for CVD, especially stroke (1.28 [95% CI, 1.05–1.55] and 1.89 [95% CI, 1.08–3.31]), as well as all-cause mortality (1.28 [95% CI, 1.09–1.50] and 1.68 [95% CI, 1.01–2.78]). ConclusionsThe MDRD equation seems to be more suitable for screening CKD progression in Chinese hypertensive populations, targeting potential risk factors for effective prevention to reduce renal impairment so as to further limit CVD morbidity and mortality.

Degree of Blood Glucose Control and Risk of Hypertension in Chinese Adults with T2DM: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Diabetes mellitus and hypertension often coexist and share common risk factors. This study investigated the correlation between glycemic management and the prevalence of hypertension among Chinese adults diagnosed with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). This study included 1715 patients with T2DM from four cities in Anhui Province, China. Sociodemographic characteristics of the sample participants were collected via questionnaires. A univariate analysis of variance (ANOVA) was utilized for continuous variables, and chi-square testing was used for categorical variables. Binary logistic regression was utilized to examine the relationship between blood pressure and variables including fasting plasma glucose (FPG), glycosylated haemoglobin (HbA1c), body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), physical activity, dyslipidemia, and family history of hypertension. FPG levels did not increase the risk of hypertension, while HbA1c was significantly and negatively associated with hypertension risk. HbA1c levels ranged from 7.2 to 8.6%, with odds ratios (OR) of 0.68 and 95% confidence intervals (CI) of 0.48 to 0.97 and a significant p value of less than 0.05. For the HbA1c levels above 8.6%, the OR was 0.58 with a 95% CI of 0.39 to 0.87 and a significant p value of less than 0.01. Furthermore, advanced age, higher BMI, greater waist circumference, presence of dyslipidemia, and positive family history of hypertension were all found to be significantly and independently linked to a heightened risk of developing hypertension. These associations remain significant after further adjustment. There was a negative association between HbA1c and the risk of hypertension, and the association remained significant after adjustment for antihypertensive drug use.

Distribution and status of vitamin B12 in Chinese adults with hypertension: a comprehensive report across 14 provinces

Background: Vitamin B12 (VB12) is an essential biomarker for population health, and its deficiency status leads to severe health burdens. A comprehensive and updated investigation on the distribution of VB12 levels and status is critically needed to address public health and clinical concerns. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional analysis using data obtained from the Precision Medical Program, which encompassed 14 provinces in China. Specific criteria based on previously published cutoffs and our study population’s characteristics are adopted to define B12 deficiency. Biochemical B12 deficiency was identified with circulating VB12 levels &lt;148 pmol/L. Metabolic B12 deficiency was determined with circulating VB12 levels ≥148 and ≤258 pmol/L with concomitant elevated plasma total homocysteine (tHcy ≥14 µmol/L). Normal B12 status included VB12 levels &gt;258 pmol/L or VB12 levels ranging from 148 to 258 pmol/L with tHcy levels below 14 µmol/L. VB12 levels and status were analyzed and stratified by age, sex, and geographical region. Results: This study enrolled a total of 2174 hypertensive adults, with a mean age of 63.0 years (±13.4) and 45.8% female. The overall mean VB12 levels were 322.3 (85.0) pmol/L. The prevalence rates of B12 biochemical deficiency, metabolic deficiency, metabolic deficiency with excluded renal dysfunction, and adequate status were 0.7%, 13.3%, 11.5%, and 85.9%, respectively. Females exhibited higher VB12 levels than males, with a β value of 19.72 (95% confidence interval [CI], 10.59–28.84) in the multivariate model. The southern population demonstrated higher VB12 levels than people from the north, with a β value of −18.14 (95% CI, −25.72 to −10.76). Males had a higher prevalence of metabolic VB12 deficiency in comparison to females (15.8% vs. 10.4%). Conclusions: Our study revealed that Chinese hypertensive adults exhibit relatively higher levels of VB12. Additionally, while biochemical B12 deficiency is uncommon, a noteworthy proportion of individuals were affected by metabolic VB12 deficiency. This study has important implications for nutritional counseling and vitamin B supplement strategies.

Associations of genetic variations in the M3 receptor with salt sensitivity, longitudinal changes in blood pressure and the incidence of hypertension in Chinese adults.

Recent studies have reported the role of the M3 muscarinic acetylcholine receptor (M3R), a member of the G-protein coupled receptor superfamily, encoded by the CHRM3 gene, in cardiac function and the regulation of blood pressure (BP). The aim of this study was to investigate the associations of CHRM3 genetic variants with salt sensitivity, longitudinal BP changes, and the development of hypertension in a Chinese population. We conducted a chronic dietary salt intervention experiment in a previously established Chinese cohort to analyze salt sensitivity of BP. Additionally, a 14-year follow-up was conducted on all participants in the cohort to evaluate the associations of CHRM3 polymorphisms with longitudinal BP changes, as well as the incidence of hypertension. The single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) rs10802811 within the CHRM3 gene displayed significant associations with low salt-induced changes in systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), and mean arterial pressure (MAP), while rs373288072, rs114677844, and rs663148 exhibited significant associations with SBP and MAP responses to a high-salt diet. Furthermore, the SNP rs58359377 was associated with changes in SBP and pulse pressure (PP) over the course of 14 years. Additionally, the 14-year follow-up revealed a significant association between the rs619288 polymorphism and an increased risk of hypertension (OR=1.74, 95% CI: 1.06-2.87, p=.029). This study provides evidence that CHRM3 may have a role in salt sensitivity, BP progression, and the development of hypertension.

Association between Dietary Acid Load and Hypertension in Chinese Adults: Analysis of the China Health and Nutrition Survey (2009).

(1) Background: Current studies show conflicting results regarding the relationship between dietary acid load (DAL) and blood pressure. (2) Methods: The study used data from the Chinese Health and Nutrition Survey (CHNS) 2009. DAL was assessed on the basis of potential renal acid load (PRAL) and net endogenous acid production (NEAP). To examine the link between DAL and the risk of hypertension, a multivariate logistic regression model was utilized. (3) Results: A total of 7912 subjects were enrolled in the study, of whom 2133 participants had hypertension, a prevalence of 27.0%. After accounting for potential covariates, higher PRAL and NEAP scores were associated with a greater likelihood of developing hypertension, with ORs of 1.34 (95% CI, 1.10-1.62) and 1.29 (95% CI, 1.09-1.53) for PRAL and NEAP scores in Q4, respectively, compared with Q1. In the male group, PRAL and NEAP scores were positively linked to hypertension risk, with ORs of 1.33 (95% CI, 1.06-1.67) and 1.46 (95% CI, 1.14-1.85) for PRAL and NEAP scores in Q4, respectively, compared with Q1, while no significant associations were observed in the female group. Correlations between PRAL scores and hypertension risk lacked significance in the subgroup analyses for participants aged <60 years. There was a significant nonlinear connection observed in the dose-response relationship between DAL (based on PRAL) and hypertension; (4) Conclusions: In Chinese adults, higher PRAL and NEAP scores were positively linked to hypertension risk. This implies that a diet with a low DAL may be a favorable dietary pattern for lowering blood pressure.

Association of TyG index with hypertension in Chinese adults: the China Health Examination Collaborative Study (CHEC Study).

We aimed to investigate the association of triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index with hypertension and compare the discriminative power of the TyG index, lipid, glycemic parameters for hypertension using the China Health Examination Collaborative study (CHEC Study). Data were collected at Ningbo Mingzhou Hospital and Beijing physical examination center from the CHEC Study during 2014 and 2021. Participants with ≥2 medical check-up times were included. The TyG index is the logarithmized product of fasting triglyceride and glucose. Generalised estimation equation (GEE) model was used to evaluate the association between the TyG index, lipid parameters, glycemic parameters and hypertension. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis was performed to explore the predictive ability of TyG index on hypertension at different years of medical check-up. 112,902 participants with an average age of 42.8 years were recruited in the study, 36,839 participants developed hypertension over the 8-year period. GEE model analysis showed that the ORs with 95% CI of hypertension were 3.35 (3.15-3.57), 1.86 (1.76-1.95), 1.67 (1.58-1.78), 1.45 (1.33-1.58), 1.24 (1.19-1.29), 0.92 (0.86-0.99), and 1.90 (1.83-1.97) in the highest versus lowest quintiles of TyG index, TG/HDL-C ratio, TG, TC, LDL-C, HDL-C and FPG in model 2. The area under the ROC curve of the overall years of medical check-up was signifi-cantly higher than a particular year in predicting hypertension (AUC: 0.883, p < 0.05). TyG index is associated with hypertension and shows the superior discriminative ability for hypertension compared with lipid and glycemic parameters.

Association between the age at onset of overweight and obesity and the subsequent risk of hypertension in Chinese adults

BackgroundData on the impact of age at onset of overweight/obesity on the risk of hypertension are limited. We aimed to investigate the above-mentioned association in Chinese population.Methods6700 adults who participated in at least three survey waves and were free of overweight/obesity and hypertension on first survey were included using China Health and Nutrition Survey. The age of participants at the onset of overweight/obesity (body mass index ≥ 24 kg/m2) and subsequent hypertension occurrence (blood pressure ≥ 140/90 mmHg or use of antihypertensive medication) were identified. We used the covariate-adjusted Poisson model with robust standard error to calculate the relative risk (RR) and 95% confidence interval (95%CI) to examine the relationship between the age at onset of overweight/obesity and hypertension.ResultsThere were 2,284 new-onset overweight/obesity cases and 2,268 incident cases of hypertension during an average 13.8-year follow-up period. Compared with the population without overweight/obesity, the RR (95% CI) of hypertension was 1.45 (1.28–1.65), 1.35 (1.21–1.52) and 1.16 (1.06–1.28) for overweight/obesity onset in participants aged < 38 years, 38–47 years, and ≥ 47 years, respectively. The risk of hypertension increased linearly with a decrease in age at onset of overweight/obesity (P < 0.001 for trend). The sensitivity analyses results were similar after excluding the participants taking antihypertensive medications or those with new-onset obesity or using waist circumference to define overweight/obesity.ConclusionsOur results emphasize the importance of assessing age at onset of overweight/obesity to prevent hypertension.

Longitudinal study of dietary patterns and hypertension in adults: China Health and Nutrition Survey 1991–2018

China is undergoing the nutrition transition that may explain partly the high prevalence of hypertension. We aimed to investigate the longitudinal association between dietary patterns and hypertension in Chinese adults over 28 years of follow-up. We used data collected in the China Health and Nutrition Survey from 1991 to 2018. Adults aged 18 years and above (n = 15,929) were included in the analysis, for whom questionnaires and anthropometric data were collected during at least two waves. Factor analysis was conducted to derive food patterns based on 18 foods or food groups. We constructed three-level mixed-effect linear regression models to estimate systolic blood pressure (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) in relation to quartiles of dietary pattern score and performed three-level mixed-effect logistic regression models to assess the risk of hypertension. Participants in the top quartile of the modern pattern had a decrease in SBP (β = − 0.51; 95% CI −0.86, −0.16; P < 0.01) when adjusted for all potential confounders, whereas participants in the top quartile of the meat pattern had an increase in DBP (β = 0.31; 95% CI 0.08, 0.53; P < 0.01). Participants in the highest quartile of the meat pattern were more likely to have hypertension (OR = 1.14; 95% CI 1.03, 1.24; P < 0.01). Adherence to the modern pattern characterized by high intake of fruits and dairy products was inversely associated with SBP, whereas the meat pattern was positively associated with DBP and the risk of hypertension. These findings may well have important public health implications.

Fruitand vegetableintake and the risk of arterial hypertension in China: A prospective cohort study.

Population-based epidemiological evidence regarding the association between fruitand vegetable intake and the incidence of hypertension is inconsistent. This prospective cohort study aimed to investigate the associationbetween fruitand vegetable intake and the risk of new-onset hypertension. Based on the project of Prediction for Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease Risk in China (China-PAR), 58,981 Chinese adults without hypertension at baseline were included. Information on fruitand vegetable intake was collected using a food-frequency questionnaire. Cox proportional hazards models were performed to estimate the hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) of incident hypertension. During 640,795 person-years of follow-up, 21,008 new cases of hypertension were recorded. Compared with participants in the lowest quintile (Q1) of total fruit and vegetable(TFV) intake, the HRs (95% CIs) of incident hypertension were 0.90 (0.86-0.95), 0.85 (0.81-0.90), 0.82 (0.78-0.86), and 0.83 (0.78-0.88) for the Q2 to Q5 group (p trend < 0.001), respectively. In further analyses categorizing participants according to the recommended intake level (500 g/day), we found that increasing the intake of TFV, even though it was still insufficient for the recommendation, also had a protective effect against the incident hypertension. When considering the intake of fruit or vegetable separately, we found similar trends as the TFV intake. These results suggest that a higher intake of fruit and vegetable is beneficial for preventing hypertension in Chinese adults.
