A one-dimensional augmented Shallow Water Equations system for channels of arbitrary cross-section

This work provides a new formulation of the one-dimensional augmented Shallow Water Equations system for open channels and rivers with arbitrarily shaped cross sections, suitable for numerical integration when discontinuous geometry is encountered. The additional variable considered can be the bottom elevation, a reference width, a shape coefficient, or a vector containing these or other geometric parameters. The appropriate numerical method, which is well suited to coupling with the mathematical one, is a path-conservative method, capable of reconstructing the behaviour of physical and geometrical variables at the cell boundaries, where the discrete solution of hyperbolic systems of equations is discontinuous. A nonlinear path suitable for the shallow water context is adopted. The resulting model is shown to be well-balanced and accurate to the second order and is further validated against analytical solutions related to channels with power-law cross-sections, specifically for dam break patterns over a variable-width channel and the run-up dynamics of long water waves over sloping bays.

Solution forms for generalized hyperbolic cotangent type systems of p-difference equations

Due to the recent increasing interest in hyperbolic-cotangent types of scalar-or two-dimensional systems of difference equations and treatment of some particular states. This paper presents a natural extension of the p-dimensional of four-systems of this generalized type and treats general states. Which is an extension of Stevic's work (J. Inequal. Appl., 2021, 184 (2021)). We also show these systems are solvable by using appropriate variable transformations and obtaining systems of homogeneous linear difference equations with constant coefficients. Some numerical examples of these systems are presented.

Convergent scheme for a non-local transport system modeling dislocations dynamics

In this paper, we consider a diagonal hyperbolic, not necessarily strictly hyperbolic, nonlinear and non-local system of transport equations that arises in the theory of dislocations densities dynamics. Under certain monotony assumptions on the initial data, global existence and uniqueness results of Hloc1 solutions for this system was proved in Hajj (2007). We propose a natural implicit scheme verifying a gradient L2 estimate at the discrete level compatible with that obtained in the continuous case in Hajj (2007). Which leads us to prove the convergence of the numerical solution to the continuous one. To our knowledge, this is the first convergent scheme proposed for this model.

DOT-type schemes for hybrid hyperbolic problems arising from free-surface, mobile-bed, shallow-flow models

Free-surface, mobile-bed, shallow-flow models may present Hybrid hyperbolic systems of partial differential equations characterised by conservative and non-conservative fluxes that can only be expressed in primitive variables. This paper presents the effort we made to derive DOT-type schemes (Osher-type schemes derived by Dumbser and Toro, 2011 [1]) for these kinds of systems formulated for the one-dimensional case. Firstly, for a Hybrid system, we managed to write a quasi-linear form characterised by the presence of a matrix, expressed as a function of the primitive variables, that multiplies the spatial derivative of the conserved variables. Next, we derived the first numerical flux by adapting the approach of Leibinger et al., 2016 [2] to this quasi-linear form. We called this result DOTHCP flux. To achieve a faster algorithm, instead of using an integration path in the space of conserved variables, as in the previous case, we employed a path in the space of primitive variables. We called this second formulation DOTHPP flux. Subsequently, we managed to account for certain physical constraints arising from the generalised Rankine-Hugoniot relations in the expression of one term of the previous flux formulation, thus obtaining the DOTHZR flux. Finally, we showed that these methods can also be applied to Combined systems characterised by conservative and non-conservative fluxes expressed in conserved variables. Several tests show the characteristics and good performances of the proposed methods when applied to Riemann problems of Hybrid and Combined systems deriving from free-surface models. Finally, thanks to the general formulation of the proposed DOT-type fluxes, these can also be applied to Hybrid and Combined hyperbolic systems deriving from different physical problems.

Solving a System of One-Dimensional Hyperbolic Delay Differential Equations Using the Method of Lines and Runge-Kutta Methods

In this paper, we consider a system of one-dimensional hyperbolic delay differential equations (HDDEs) and their corresponding initial conditions. HDDEs are a class of differential equations that involve a delay term, which represents the effect of past states on the present state. The delay term poses a challenge for the application of standard numerical methods, which usually require the evaluation of the differential equation at the current step. To overcome this challenge, various numerical methods and analytical techniques have been developed specifically for solving a system of first-order HDDEs. In this study, we investigate these challenges and present some analytical results, such as the maximum principle and stability conditions. Moreover, we examine the propagation of discontinuities in the solution, which provides a comprehensive framework for understanding its behavior. To solve this problem, we employ the method of lines, which is a technique that converts a partial differential equation into a system of ordinary differential equations (ODEs). We then use the Runge–Kutta method, which is a numerical scheme that solves ODEs with high accuracy and stability. We prove the stability and convergence of our method, and we show that the error of our solution is of the order O(Δt+h¯4), where Δt is the time step and h¯ is the average spatial step. We also conduct numerical experiments to validate and evaluate the performance of our method.

Coupling of sediment transport phenomena with turbulent surface flows: mathematical modeling, finite volume approximation and test simulations

Several sediment transport models coupled with shallow water equations have been developed in the literature over the past few decades. The water flow in the presence of abrupt bottom slopes distorts and cause turbulence. This phenomenon is well-known in the sediment transport theory. Sediment transport models based on shallow water equations do not include turbulence effects or the phase-lag between water velocity and bottom velocity. In this study, we consider a one-dimensional free surface turbulent water flow with sediment and morphodynamic. We propose a new one-dimensional acceleration-dissipation mathematical sediment transport model that considers the distortion of horizontal profile velocity in transport. The model is an improved version of existing averaged sediment transport models. In the new model, there is a distinction between fluid velocity and bottom velocity through a new bedload equation. The mathematical model is a system of nonlinear hyperbolic partial differential equations that are approximated by a stable and robust finite volume scheme presented in the path-conservative framework. Numerical tests are performed to demonstrate the efficiency of the developed theory.

A relaxation approach to modeling properties of hyperbolic–parabolic type models

In this work, we propose a novel relaxation modeling approach for partial differential equations (PDEs) involving convective and diffusive terms. We reformulate the original convection–diffusion problem as a system of hyperbolic equations coupled with relaxation terms. In contrast to existing literature on relaxation modeling, where the solution of the reformulated problem converges to certain types of equations in the diffusive limit, our formalism treats the augmented problem as a system of coupled hyperbolic equations with relaxation acting on both the convective flux and the source term. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the new system of equations satisfies Liu’s sub-characteristic condition. To verify the robustness of our proposed approach, we perform numerical experiments on various important models, including nonlinear convection–diffusion problems with discontinuous coefficients. The results show the promising potential of our relaxation modeling approach for both pure and applied mathematical sciences, with applications in different models and areas.

A new method of failure analysis

The present paper develops a new failure analysis method under plane strain conditions considering a generalized linear yield criterion. The yield criterion and the stress equilibrium equations constitute a hyperbolic system of equations. It is shown that two auxiliary variables satisfy the equation of telegraphy. Simple analytical relationships connect these variables and the radii of curvature of the characteristic curves. The calculated radii of curvature allow for the corresponding characteristic net to be constructed. Then, the stress field is determined using another set of analytical relationships. Thus, a numerical procedure is only necessary for solving the equation of telegraphy. This equation can be integrated by the method of Riemann. In particular, Green’s function is the Bessel function of zero order. A simple example illustrates the general method.

A global solution to a hyperbolic problem for blood flow modelling

The paper aims to examine the hyperbolic system of equations governing one-dimensional haemodynamics and its relevance in analysing blood flow under mechanical influences, with particular emphasis on the impact of altering the angle of the leg axis. Methods and approaches for solving hyperbolic equations have been developed in light of their properties and characteristics. The primary objective of this study was to investigate the interplay between vein pressure, pulse wave velocity, and vascular distension. The study revealed an inverse relationship between vein pressure and pulse wave velocity. A decrease in pulse wave velocity occurs when vein pressure rises, and vice versa. Both real measurements and modelling results confirmed this dependence. The pressure in the veins is between 10.8 and 13.6 kPa, and the speed of the pulse wave is between 0.061 and 0.27 kPa. The agreement between real and model data was high. The modelled venous pressure and pulse wave velocity values are close to the actual values. However, it is essential to acknowledge the limitations of this paper. These limitations include the utilisation of one-dimensional haemodynamic models, which fail to consider the three-dimensional structure of the circulatory system. Additionally, the analysis is restricted to examining changes solely in the leg axis angle. The research helps to clarify the relationship between mechanical actions and haemodynamic parameters. The findings may help research and develop new methods for identifying and treating conditions associated with the cardiovascular system.

Mixtures of phase transforming fluids and gases: Phase field model and stabilized isogeometric discretization

Liquid–vapor phase change in the presence of non-condensable gases is a classical problem, which continues to challenge continuum modeling. Here, we propose a new model based on the phase field method, which describes the dynamics of the non-condensable gas, phase change and flow simultaneously. The model is built by extending van der Waals and Korteweg’s theory for phase-transforming mixtures. The model equations have fourth order partial differential operators which presents significant challenges to standard spatial discretization methods. In addition, the isentropic form of the model equations is not hyperbolic at the liquid–gas interface, which inhibits the direct application of most algorithms for systems of hyperbolic equations. We propose a novel numerical scheme based on Isogeometric Analysis and the Taylor–Galerkin method, and also implement a residual based discontinuity capturing scheme. We show numerical results, at micron length scales, to study the accuracy and stability of our algorithm. We study the flow of a shock wave past a liquid droplet to test our numerical algorithm when steep gradients are present in the solution. Finally, we use the model to study the problem of gas–vapor bubble collapse near a solid wall.

Advancing wave equation analysis in dual-continuum systems: A partial learning approach with discrete empirical interpolation and deep neural networks

In this work, we propose a partial learning approach using partially explicit discretization for solving the wave equations. The considered mathematical model involves a dual-continuum system of hyperbolic second-order partial differential equations. We employ a finite element method for spatial approximation, while for temporal approximation, we utilize a partially explicit scheme. Specifically, we adopt the explicit scheme for the low-conductive continuum and the implicit scheme for the high-conductive continuum.Our proposed method’s key idea lies in employing a partial learning approach to remove the necessity of finding the difficult-to-compute (implicit) part of the solution. Instead of attempting a full training of the numerical solution, we focus on training only a portion of it that requires the most computational cost. We use a proper orthogonal decomposition with a discrete empirical interpolation method to facilitate machine learning. By employing these methods, we can train a deep neural network to predict the values of the implicit part of the solution at specific observed locations and then restore the field.We consider a two-dimensional model problem in heterogeneous media to test the effectiveness of the proposed approach. The numerical results demonstrate that our partial learning approach yields a satisfactory approximation. By combining the reduced-order modeling techniques, the partially explicit time scheme, and the deep neural network, we removed the necessity of finding the difficult-to-compute part of the solution while maintaining high accuracy.

The positivity of the space operator generated by the given problem in interpolation spaces is established. The structure of interpolation spaces of this differential operator is studied. The positivity of this space operator in Slobodeckij-Sobolev spaces is established.

A new approach is considered for increasing the order of accuracy of the grid-characteristic method in the region of coefficient jumps. The approach is based on piecewise polynomial interpolation for schemes of the second and third orders of accuracy for the case where the interface between the media is consistent with a finite-difference grid. The method is intended for numerical simulation of the propagation of dynamic wave disturbances in heterogeneous media. Systems of hyperbolic equations with variable coefficients are used to describe the considered physical processes. The description of the numerical method and the results of its testing are given.

K voprosu o chislennom reshenii nekonservativnykh giperbolicheskikh sistem uravneniy

Issues related to the lack of convergence in the application of formally path-conservative difference schemes for solving nonconservative hyperbolic systems of equations are numerically investigated. This problem is central in constructing well-posed difference schemes for solving this class of problems. The basic concepts of the theory of nonconservative hyperbolic systems of equations and the corresponding problems of constructing difference schemes for their solution are outlined. A variant of the HLL method is proposed that allows using an arbitrary explicitly specified path. For a model system of Burgers equations, the shock adiabates and paths corresponding to the viscous regularization of a system of a given form are explicitly calculated. The reasons for the lack of convergence of numerical solutions of exact ones in the case of incorrect application of the corresponding algorithms are analyzed. It is shown that, at least in the particular case considered, a variant of the HLL method that is formally conservative along the way gives the correct solution of the problem.

The subject of this study is dual-bell supersonic nozzles of liquid rocket engines. The goal is to design a dual-bell supersonic nozzle that will provide maximum thrust for a liquid rocket engine in the first stage of a launch vehicle by solving an optimization problem using numerical simulation methods. The goal of the study is to choose the exit pressures of each part of the dual-bell nozzle based on the known flight trajectory of the launch vehicle, set and solve the problem of optimizing the dual-bell nozzle contour, and assess the impact of the use of a dual-bell nozzle on the efficiency of a liquid-propellant rocket engine. The methods used are: numerical methods for solving the hyperbolic system of unsteady equations of gas dynamics and multidimensional minimization problems. The following results were obtained. The formulation and solution of the optimization problem of the contour of a dual-bell supersonic nozzle, considering the design limitations in the form of a fixed length of the nozzle, is carried out. By analyzing the flight path of the first stage of the launch vehicle, a first approximation of the nozzle contour was obtained. For further calculations, both sections were approximated by parabolas, the coefficients of which, together with the lengths of the sections, formed a vector of optimized parameters. An expression for the axial component of thrust with the opposite sign was used as the objective function to solve the minimization problem. Because of solving the optimization problem, a dual-bell nozzle contour was designed to provide maximum thrust. An assessment of the effectiveness of his work was also conducted. The calculated value of the average along the trajectory of the specific impulse when using a dual-bell nozzle was higher by 1.6% than when using a standard nozzle. Conclusions. The scientific novelty of the obtained results is as follows: the design of the dual-bell nozzle contour was performed by solving the problem of multidimensional optimization, taking into account the design constraints, and using computational analysis methods

Mathematical modeling of non-stationary deformation of cylindrical structures

The paper investigates the dynamic behavior of a hollow elastic cylinder of finite length, placed in a rigid cylindrical shell, under a sharp change in internal pressure. A numerical solution of a two-dimensional dynamic problem is obtained using the method of spatial characteristics. The stress-strain state of an elastic cylinder is described by a system of hyperbolic equations with two circular conical surfaces as characteristic surfaces. The outer cones correspond to longitudinal waves; the inner ones correspond to transverse waves. The calculations were carried out under various conditions at the ends and the outer (contact) surface of the cylinder and shell. An analysis of the results for a cylinder with load-free ends shows that the absence of gluing the outer surface of the cylinder with the shell leads to a significant increase in the velocities of the points of the cylinder. Under the action of internal pressure, the ends move apart, resulting in a significant increase in the radial velocities of the internal channel. Qualitative patterns of behavior of the structures under consideration, which are widely used in mechanical engineering, on impact-type impacts, can be used to improve and optimize them at the design stage.

Continuum modeling of freeway traffic flows: State-of-the-art, challenges and future directions in the era of connected and automated vehicles

Connected and automated vehicles (CAVs) are expected to reshape traffic flow dynamics and present new challenges and opportunities for traffic flow modeling. While numerous studies have proposed optimal modeling and control strategies for CAVs with various objectives (e.g., traffic efficiency and safety), there are uncertainties about the flow dynamics of CAVs in real-world traffic. The uncertainties are especially amplified for mixed traffic flows, consisting of CAVs and human-driven vehicles, where the implications can be significant from the continuum-modeling perspective, which aims to capture macroscopic traffic flow dynamics based on hyperbolic systems of partial differential equations. This paper aims to highlight and discuss some essential problems in continuum modeling of real-world freeway traffic flows in the era of CAVs. We first provide a select review of some existing continuum models for conventional human-driven traffic as well as the recent attempts for incorporating CAVs into the continuum-modeling framework. Wherever applicable, we provide new insights about the properties of existing models and revisit their implications for traffic flows of CAVs using recent empirical observations with CAVs and the previous discussions and debates in the literature. The paper then discusses some major problems inherent to continuum modeling of real-world (mixed) CAV traffic flows modeling by distinguishing between two major research directions: (a) modeling for explaining purposes, where making reproducible inferences about the physical aspects of macroscopic properties is of the primary interest, and (b) modeling for practical purposes, in which the focus is on the reliable predictions for operation and control. The paper proposes some potential solutions in each research direction and recommends some future research topics.

Conditions for the decay of a wave into a system of waves in a viscoelastic medium with a negative nonlinearity parameter

Conditions for the decay of a nonlinear wave into a system of waves traveling at different velocities in a viscoelastic weakly anisotropic medium are studied numerically. To this end, solutions of a hyperbolic system of equations are studied in the region of nonuniqueness of parameters, where one can construct a solution to the Riemann problem both with a single wave and with a system of waves corresponding to the same initial data.

A generalized integral problem for a system of hyperbolic equations and its applications

A nonlocal boundary value problem for a system of hyperbolic equations of second order with generalized integral condition is considered. By method of introduction of functional parameters the investigated problem is transformed to the inverse problem for the system of hyperbolic equations with unknown parameters and additional functional relations. Algorithms of finding solution to the inverse problem for the system of hyperbolic equations are constructed, and their convergence is proved. The conditions for existence of unique solution to the inverse problem for the system of hyperbolic equations are obtained in the terms of initial data. The coefficient conditions for unique solvability of nonlocal boundary value problem for the system of hyperbolic equations with generalized integral condition are established. The results are illustrated by numerical examples.
