Reduction of the Laplace sequence and sine-Gordon type equations

Abstract In this work, we continue the development of methods for constructing Lax pairs and recursion operators for nonlinear integrable hyperbolic equations of soliton type, previously proposed in the work of Habibullin et al. (2016 {\it J. Phys. A: Math. Theor.} {\bf 57} 015203). This approach is based on the use of the well-known theory of Laplace transforms. The article completes the proof that for any known integrable equation of sine-Gordon type, the sequence of Laplace transforms associated with its linearization admits a third-order finite-field reduction. It is shown that the found reductions are closely related to the Lax pair and recursion operators for both characteristic directions of the given hyperbolic equation. Previously unknown Lax pairs and recursion operators were constructed.

Lie symmetry method to discuss the optimal system of Lie subalgebras and similarity solutions for shock propagation in a perfectly conducting dusty gas with magnetic field in rotating medium

In this paper, the similarity solutions for the shock wave propagation in a perfectly conducting dusty gas under the effect of axial or azimuthal magnetic field in the case of rotating medium by using Lie symmetry method have been discussed. The optimal system of one-dimensional Lie subalgebras related to the hyperbolic system of nonlinear partial differential equations had been constructed by using general invariant function and general adjoint transformation matrix. The optimal system is the collection of inequivalent optimal classes, which provides crucial information regarding different types of the similarity solutions. On the basis of the optimal system, we have discussed all possible similarity solutions for inequivalent optimal classes individually. Also, we have found that the similarity solutions exist in two cases for power law shock path and in one case with exponential law shock path. The shock wave decay is due to an increment in the physical parameter such as shock Cowling number or non-idealness parameter or adiabatic exponent or rotational parameter. For smaller value of the ratio of density of solid particles to initial species density of the gas i.e. [Formula: see text], the shock strength decreases with an increment in the mass fraction of solid particles in the mixture [Formula: see text], but the shock strength decreases as [Formula: see text] increases for [Formula: see text]. Also, the shock strength increases with an increment in [Formula: see text] at constant [Formula: see text]. It is observed that the shock wave is stronger in the presence of axial magnetic field as compared to azimuthal magnetic field.

Multivariate Approximation Using Symmetrized and Perturbed Hyperbolic Tangent-Activated Multidimensional Convolution-Type Operators

In this article, we introduce, for the first time, multivariate symmetrized and perturbed hyperbolic tangent-activated convolution-type operators in three forms. We present their approximation properties, that is, their quantitative convergence to the unit operator via the multivariate modulus of continuity. We continue with the multivariate global smoothness preservation of these operators. We present, in detail, the related multivariate iterative approximation, as well as, multivariate simultaneous approximation, and their combinations. Using differentiability in our research, we produce higher rates of approximation, and multivariate simultaneous global smoothness preservation is also achieved.

NECESSARY CONDITIONS FOR OPTIMALITY IN ONE NONSMOOTH OPTIMAL CONTROL PROBLEM FOR GOURSAT-DARBOUX SYSTEMS

We consider a nonsmooth optimal control problem described by a system of second-order hyperbolic equations with Goursat boundary conditions. A number of necessary optimality conditions are proved in terms of directional derivatives.

An Effective Discontinuous Galerkin Method for Solving Acoustic Wave Equations in Heterogeneous Media

Abstract A discontinuous Galerkin (DG) method is introduced for solving 2D and 3D first-order velocity-pressure acoustic wave propagation problems in heterogeneous media. First, acoustic equations are reformulated into a first-order hyperbolic system, which can be integrated into the framework of the DG method. Then, we introduce an effective numerical flux in DG spatial discretization, which preserves physical laws on both sides of interfaces with discontinuous material parameters. It is compared with both the classic Lax-Friedrichs flux and the exact upwind flux, with the latter derived from solving the Riemann problem and satisfying the Rankine-Hugoniot condition. The comparison reveals that while our flux is formally similar to the classic local Lax-Friedrichs flux, its numerical behavior is analogous to the exact upwind flux. The primary advantage of this method lies in its simplicity and straightforward computation yet can maintain physical continuity conditions near interfaces with discontinuous material parameters. Several numerical experiments of acoustic wave propagation in 2D and 3D heterogeneous media are carried out, illustrating the effectiveness of this method.

Qualitative analysis of fourth-order hyperbolic equations

We investigate the qualitative properties of weak solutions to the boundary value problems for fourth-order linear hyperbolic equations with constant coefficients in a plane bounded domain convex with respect to characteristics. Our main scope is to prove some analog of the maximum principle, solvability, uniqueness and regularity results for weak solutions of initial and boundary value problems in the space L2. The main novelty of this paper is to establish some analog of the maximum principle for fourth-order hyperbolic equations. This question is very important due to natural physical interpretation and helps to establish the qualitative properties for solutions (uniqueness and existence results for weak solutions). The challenge to prove the maximum principle for weak solutions remains more complicated and at that time becomes more interesting in the case of fourth-order hyperbolic equations, especially, in the case of non-classical boundary value problems with data of weak regularity. Unlike second-order equations, qualitative analysis of solutions to fourth-order equations is not a trivial problem, since not only a solution is involved in boundary or initial conditions, but also its high- order derivatives. Other difficulty concerns the concept of weak solution of the boundary value problems with L2 – data. Such solutions do not have usual traces, thus, we have to use a special notion for traces to poss correctly the boundary value problems. This notion is traces associated with operator L or L-traces. We also derive an interesting interpretation (as periodicity of characteristic billiard or the John's mapping) of the Fredholm's property violation. Finally, we discuss some potential challenges in applying the results and proposed methods.

On convergence of linear response formulae in some piecewise hyperbolic maps

Abstract When high-dimensional non-uniformly hyperbolic chaotic systems undergo dynamical perturbations, their long-time statistics are generally observed to respond differentiably with respect to the perturbation. Although important in applications, this differentiability, which is thought to be connected to the dimensionality of the system, has remained resistant to rigorous study outside of the one-dimensional setting. To model non-uniformly hyperbolic systems in multiple dimensions, we consider a family of the mathematically tractable class of piecewise smooth hyperbolic maps, the Lozi maps. For these maps, we prove that the existence of a formal derivative of the response reduces to conditional mixing of the SRB measure on the singularity set. Heuristically, this suggests that Lozi maps, and piecewise uniformly expanding maps more generally, should have linear response.

A solving new method for the urea-selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system in a diesel engine using coupled hyperbolic-parabolic partial differential equations (PDEs)

To control the diesel engine urea SCR system with high accuracy, firstly, the partial differential equations of the SCR system are simplified through variable substitution and the method of characteristic lines to eliminate the partial derivative terms of the hyperbolic partial differential equations in the flow direction. The backward difference method is used to solve the problem, and the adaptive time step is adjusted to improve computational efficiency. Secondly, the Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm is applied to identify the model parameters per second based on the 1800-s test bench data. By combining the experimental data with the parameter identification results, this paper calculated the downstream NOx concentration with 99.5 % accuracy. Finally, the 1800s transient test data was applied to a commonly used single-state SCR control model, and cell numbers 1–4 of the cases were numerically simulated. It was found that the reduced-order model had a computation time of 1 s but was less accurate. When the test data was applied to the model presented in this study, the calculation time was 27s, and the model's calculation results show that the average error of the downstream NOx concentration is 16.95 ppm, which is 14.3 ppm lower than that of the two-cell one-state model.

Optimization of the integro-differential hyperbolic model

We consider a model of processes in viscoelastic media. The force arising inside the body may depend not only on the current values but also on the entire time history of the motion (for example, polymers, emulsions, and suspensions exhibit memory properties). Such processes often lead to the necessity of studying hyperbolic integro-differential equations with Volterra integral term. The main goal is to prove the existence and uniqueness of generalized solutions to the corresponding initial-boundary value problem, as well as to investigate the existence of optimal control for systems described by these models. The main results are obtained using the method of a priori inequalities in negative norms. In particular, we justify inequalities in negative norms for the integro-differential operator in certain functional spaces. The work begins with a short description of relevant results with similar formulations and referencing works with physical justification of the model. Afterwards, we describe the problem statement, constraints on equation parameters, and functional spaces used for the investigation. Below are the main results, in particular definitions of generalized solutions and properties on the well-posed of the initial-boundary value problem as well as the existence of optimal control. Control is carried out through the right-hand side of the equation using a certain special operator. It is possible to examine specific examples of such control operators (illustrating various control mechanisms) and the corresponding control spaces. By utilizing proven inequalities and relying on general results of S.I. Lyashko from the theory of a priori inequalities in negative norms, we establish sufficient conditions for the existence of optimal control. In particular, we impose the restrictions on the admissible set of controls and the quality criterion.

Dynamical behaviour of a logarithmically sensitive chemotaxis model under time-dependent boundary conditions

Abstract This article studies the dynamical behaviour of classical solutions of a hyperbolic system of balance laws, derived from a chemotaxis model with logarithmic sensitivity, with time-dependent boundary conditions. It is shown that under suitable assumptions on the boundary data, solutions starting in the $H^2$ -space exist globally in time and the differences between the solutions and their corresponding boundary data converge to zero as time goes to infinity. There is no smallness restriction on the magnitude of the initial perturbations. Moreover, numerical simulations show that the assumptions on the boundary data are necessary for the above-mentioned results to hold true. In addition, numerical results indicate that the solutions converge asymptotically to time-periodic states if the boundary data are time-periodic.

A hybrid a posteriori MOOD limited lattice Boltzmann method to solve compressible fluid flows – LBMOOD

In this paper we blend two lattice-Boltzmann (LB) numerical schemes with an a posteriori Multi-dimensional Optimal Order Detection (MOOD) paradigm to solve hyperbolic systems of conservation laws in 1D and 2D. The first LB scheme is robust to the presence of shock waves but lacks accuracy on smooth flows. The second one has a second-order of accuracy but develops non-physical oscillations when solving steep gradients. The MOOD paradigm produces a hybrid LB scheme via smooth and positivity detectors allowing to gather the best properties of the two LB methods within one scheme. Indeed, the resulting scheme presents second order of accuracy on smooth solutions, essentially non-oscillatory behavior on irregular ones, and, an ‘almost fail-safe’ property concerning positivity issues. The numerical results on a set of sanity test cases and demanding ones are presented assessing the appropriate behavior of the hybrid LBMOOD scheme in 1D and 2D.

Numerical Solution of Burgers Equation Using Finite Difference Methods: Analysis of Shock Waves in Aircraft Dynamics

In this research, the Lax, the Upwind, and the MacCormack finite difference methods are applied to the experimental solving of the one-dimensional (1D) unsteady Burger's Equation, a Hyperbolic Partial Differential Equation. These three numerical analysis-solving methods are implemented for accurate modeling of shock wave behavior high-speed flows that are necessary for aerospace engineering design. This research analysis proves that the MacCormack technique is the one that treats the differential equations with second-order accuracy. This method is quite preferred when it comes to numerical simulations because of its advanced level of accuracy. Although the Upwind and Lax methods are slightly less accurate, they show the development of shock waves that give visualizations to better understand the flow dynamics. Also, in this study, the impact of varying viscosity coefficients on fluid flow characteristics by using the lax (a numerical method for solving the viscous Burgers equation) is investigated. This identification of the phenomenon sheds light on the behavior of boundary layers, which, in turn, can be used to improve the design of high-speed vehicles and lead to a greater understanding of the area of ​​fluid dynamics.

The inverse problem of identifying complex hyperbolic equation source terms in electromagnetic propagation

Abstract This article investigates the inverse problem of determining the source term of the hyperbolic equation for electromagnetic propagation using terminal data. This study is an important method for identifying propagation sources in electromagnetics. Unlike wave equations, the complexity of the underlying equations can make theoretical analysis quite difficult. Firstly, the uniqueness of the inverse problem was proved using the energy method. Then, based on the optimal control framework, the inverse problem was transformed into an optimal control problem, and the existence of the optimal solution and its necessary conditions were established. Secondly, the global uniqueness and stability of the optimal solution have been proven, which is a completely new conclusion. This has laid a solid theoretical foundation for numerical algorithms. Finally, it is proposed to apply the Landweber iteration method and conjugate gradient method to this problem, and some numerical examples are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness and convergence speed of these two algorithms.

Reducing polynomial degree by one for inner-stage operators affects neither stability type nor accuracy order of the Runge–Kutta discontinuous Galerkin method

The Runge–Kutta (RK) discontinuous Galerkin (DG) method is a mainstream numerical algorithm for solving hyperbolic equations. In this paper, we use the linear advection equation in one and two dimensions as a model problem to prove the following results: For an arbitrarily high-order RKDG scheme in Butcher form, as long as we use the P k P^k approximation in the final stage, even if we drop the k k th-order polynomial modes and use the P k − 1 P^{k-1} approximation for the DG operators at all inner RK stages, the resulting numerical method still maintains the same type of stability and convergence rate as those of the original RKDG method. Numerical examples are provided to validate the analysis. The numerical method analyzed in this paper is a special case of the Class A RKDG method with stage-dependent polynomial spaces proposed by Chen, Sun, and Xing [arXiv preprint, arXiv:2402.15150, 2024]. Our analysis provides theoretical justifications for employing cost-effective and low-order spatial discretization at specific RK stages for developing more efficient DG schemes without affecting stability type and accuracy order of the original method.

Controllability of some nonlocal‐impulsive Volterra evolution systems via measures of noncompactness

This study investigates the controllability of a Volterra evolution equation with impulsive terms and nonlocal initial conditions. With the aid of the resolvent operator generated by the linear part of the equation, mild solutions can be defined. Notably, the resolvent operator lacks compactness and equicontinuity. Additionally, the compactness of the impulsive and nonlocal functions is not required. Sufficient conditions for controllability are obtained through measures of noncompactness in Banach spaces. Functional differential equations and hyperbolic partial differential equations can be solved with these results. An example is given to illustrate the validity of the presented results.

Random Walks and Lorentz Processes

Random walks and Lorentz processes serve as fundamental models for Brownian motion. The study of random walks is a favorite object of probability theory, whereas that of Lorentz processes belongs to the theory of hyperbolic dynamical systems. Here we first present an example where the method based on the probabilistic approach led to new results for the Lorentz process: concretely, the recurrence of the planar periodic Lorentz process with a finite horizon. Afterwards, an unsolved problem—related to a 1981 question of Sinai on locally perturbed periodic Lorentz processes—is formulated as an analogous problem in the language of random walks.
