Cervical cystic hygroma in adults: a case report

BackgroundsManifestation of cystic hygroma in adulthood is very rare. The rarity of cystic hygroma in adults has caused problems in its diagnosis and management and few studies have reported cystic hygroma in adults.Case presentationIn this study, we reported a rare case with cervical cystic hygroma in adults. We report a 20-year-old Iranian male (Iranian ethnicity) with a diagnosis of right-side neck cystic hygroma and discuss the presentation, diagnosis, and clinical, radiological, and operative aspects of it.ConclusionCystic hygromas are a rare occurrence in adults. They are typically asymptomatic, rarely complicated, and can be mistaken for a cystic neck mass. This study showed that in our case, surgical resection may be a safe and effective treatment for cystic hygroma, with minimal risk of complications during the procedure.

A Case of Cystic Hygroma in Adults and Its Management

Abstract Cystic hygroma is a congenital abnormality due to lymphoid sequestration in the sac. Incidence of cystic hygroma in adult is rarely report. It is most commonly present in posterior triangle as cystic mass. Even in adult patient, any cystic lesion present in posterior triangle cystic hygroma should be considered one of the differential diagnoses. Here, we present a rare occurrence of cystic hygroma in adult male patient present as cystic lesion. This case is reported for its adult presentation and discusses the management for cystic hygroma.

Huge Post-traumatic Cystic Hygroma, Combination of Surgical and Nonsurgical Treatment Methods: A Case Report

Background: Cystic hygroma (cystic lymphangioma) is a malformation of the lymphatic system. It is rare in adults and trauma may be the cause in some cases. Surgical and non-surgical treatment methods have been described in the management of cystic hygroma. Case Report: A 38-year-old woman, known case of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), presented a huge cystic formation in the posterior aspect of her thigh following trauma. We treated the patient using a combination of three treatment methods including surgical excision, intra-cavity bleomycin injection, and post-operative use of compression pants. Conclusion: Huge post-traumatic cystic hygroma in adults is rare. By the combination of the above three therapeutic regimens, there was no cystic lesion recurrence after eight months.

Cystic hygroma (lymphangioma) is a benign congenital malformation of the lymphatic system that occurs in infants and children younger than two years of age. It is rarely seen in adults. Occurrence in adults is uncommon, and only few cases of adult lymphangioma have been reported in the literature. Here we present a rare case of cystic hygroma in a 52 year old patient who presented with a swelling in the neck. Computed tomography revealed presence of cystic masses in the lesion. After total excision of the mass, histopathological diagnosis of cystic lymphangioma was made. After an uneventful postoperative period patient was discharged. No recurrence has occurred since then. This case report discusses the differential diagnoses and up-to-date management of cystic hygroma in adults. The objectives of this report are to discuss about the clinical presentation, diagnosis, pathologic findings and management of this malformation.

Mesenteric lymphatic hygroma in adults: A case report with a review of the literature.

Mesenteric lymphatic hygroma is a benign tumor of lymphatic origin that is rarely observed in adult patients. Congenital and developed non-specific symptoms, including abdominal distension, pain and ileus, develop at an early age in patients. This type of disease is usually reported by pediatric doctors, as referred to in the literature. The current study presents the case of a 23-year-old male in whom a polycystic mass in the mesentery was identified by computed tomography. The size of the tumor was measured to be 30×20×15 cm during surgery. The mass was excised completely with preservation of the intestine, duodenum, pancreas and other neighboring organs. Histopathological examination confirmed the diagnosis of lymphatic hygroma. The post-operative recovery was uneventful, with the exception of chylous leakage for one week, which was relieved spontaneously. In addition, the present study presents a review of the previous literature concerning mesenteric lymphatic hygroma.

Adult Onset Cystic Hygroma Management

Cystic hygroma is an uncommon congenital lymphatic malformation. Its management is evolving from surgical excision to intralesion injection. A case of adult onset cystic hygroma is presented. The management of the hygroma is discussed to demonstrate that the management approach for cystic hygroma in adults is slightly different from that for children.

Mediastinal Cystic Hygromas

Two cases of asymptomatic primary mediastinal cystic hygroma in adults are reported. The CT findings, including: paratracheal and paravertebral location; round, smooth, and sharp outline; homogeneous density with low attenuation number; compression of surrounding tissue without gross invasion; and lack of calcification, together with the superior mediastinal location are sufficiently characteristic to suggest the diagnosis.

Traumatic Subdural Hygroma in Adults

The authors review 25 cases of post-traumatic subdural hygroma in adults and report the findings of computer tomography in 4 cases. There was marked diversity in the severity of injury and in chronicity. The site of the lesion was consistently delineated by angiography, but preoperative differentiation from subdural hematoma was possible only with computed tomography. The mortality was 28%. Good recovery occurred in 48%. The prognosis was best among younger patients with subacute or chronic lesions.

Among thirty cases of chronic subdural hematoma and hygroma in patients between 16 and 78 years of age, nine were found on the left side, ten on the right side and eleven were bilateral. The diagnosis was made in all cases by computer assisted tomography. Surgical treatment consisted in evacuating the subdural collection of fluid through two or three enlarged burr-holes, resection of the membranes were accessible through the burr-hole, irrigation of the subdural space and its subsequent drainage. The drain was left in postoperatively until the draining fluid became clear or the subdural space was dry. In one case there was a superficial intracerebral hematoma which obsorbed spontaneously. One patient with a subdural empyema required craniotomy. Only four out of ten patients who were comatose pre-operatively survived. Out of the 30 patients, 24 had a satisfactory postoperative outcome.

Intrathoracic cystic hygroma. A report of three cases.

Three cases of cystic hygroma in adults are presented. Cystic hygroma is a type of lymphangioma with large dilated cystic lymph spaces which usually occur in the neck or axillae in infants. The mediastinal type of cystic hygroma is rare (less than 1%) and is usually not discovered until adulthood because of its asymptomatic nature and deep location. Roentgen findings are not specific, but features which help differentiate cystic hygroma from other malignant processes include a sharp border and uniform density to the mass, macroscopic cystic lymph spaces, and little lobulation of the surface of the mass. Treatment is early surgical excision.
