Submerged plant-biochar composite system exhibits effective control over residual organic pollutants in the benthic organisms of aquaculture ponds

As of now, submerged plants and biochar have demonstrated significant benefits in aquaculture pond sediment remediation. However, there is limited research on the synergistic effects of biochar and submerged plants in mitigating hydrophobic organic contaminant (HOC) accumulation in aquaculture benthic organisms and in controlling the nutrient (nitrogen and phosphorus) levels in aquaculture water. This study assesses a submerged plant-biochar system's efficacy in removing HOCs from simulated freshwater aquaculture ponds. Vallisneria natans was planted in sediment with varying levels of wheat straw biochar, while Corbicula fluminea served as the targeted benthic organism. The bioaccumulation experiment identified the optimal biochar ratio for the Vallisneria natans-biochar system in controlling HOCs in aquaculture products. Analyses included final accumulation concentrations in benthic organisms, changes in freely-dissolved concentrations in aquaculture sediment, and a mass balance calculation to explore key factors in their removal from the system. Results indicated that the Vallisneria natans-1.5% biochar composite system achieved optimal control of HOCs in sediment and aquaculture products. Biochar addition to the sediment in the composite system demonstrated a “promotion with low addition, inhibition with high addition” effect on Vallisneria natans growth. Notably, the addition of 1.5% biochar (VN1.5 group) significantly promoted the growth of Vallisneria natans leaves and roots. Comparing the final pollutant proportions in different environmental media, concentrations in water (0.20%–1.8%), clam accumulation (0.032%–0.11%), and plant absorption (0.10%–0.44%) constituted a minimal portion of the overall pollutant load in the system. The majority of pollutants (24%–65%) were degraded in the aquaculture environment, with microbial degradation likely playing a predominant role. Bacterial phyla, particularly Proteobacteria and Firmicutes, were identified as potential direct contributors to pollutant degradation in the Vallisneria natans-biochar system.

Competitive sorption experiments reveal new regression models to predict PhACs sorption on carbonaceous materials

Sorption of hydrophobic organic contaminants onto thermally altered carbonaceous materials (TACM) constitutes a widely used technology for remediation of polluted waters. This process is typically described by sorption isotherms, with one of the most used models, the Polanyi-Dubinin-Manes (PDM) equation, including water solubility (Sw) as a normalizing factor. In case of pharmaceutical active compounds (PhACs), Sw depends on the pH of the environment due to the ionic/ionizable behavior of these chemicals, a fact frequently ignored in sorption studies of PhACs. In this work, we set the theoretical framework to include the variation of Sw with pH in the definition of the PDM model, and we applied this approach to describe the effect of ambient pH in the competitive sorption of three commonly detected PhACs (carbamazepine, ibuprofen, and sulfamethoxazole) onto three carbonaceous sorbents (biochar, powder activated carbon, and colloidal activated carbon). Changes in the ambient pH and hence in the hydrophobicity of the compounds could explain the strong variations observed in single-solute sorption and also in competitive sorption. Furthermore, Sw was used as a parameter for the linear regression model of sorption coefficients of our experiments, suggesting the incorporation of this variable as an improvement to existing approaches for prediction of PhACs sorption onto TACM.

Size-dependent vector effects of microplastics on bioaccumulation of hydrophobic organic contaminants in earthworm: A dual-dosing study

The potential of microplastics to act as a vector for anthropogenic contaminants is of rising concern. However, directly quantitatively determining the vector effects of microplastics has been rarely studied. Here, we present a dual-dosing method that simulates the chemical bioaccumulation from soil and microplastics simultaneously, wherein unlabeled hydrophobic organic contaminants (HOCs) were spiked in the soil and their respective isotope-labeled reference compounds were spiked on the polyethylene microplastics. The comparison of the bioavailability, i.e., the freely dissolved concentration in soil porewater and bioaccumulation by earthworm, between the unlabeled and isotope-labeled HOCs was carried out. Relatively higher level of bioavailability of the isotope-labeled HOCs was observed compared to the unlabeled HOCs, which may be attributed to the irreversible desorption of HOCs from soil particles. The average relative fractions of bioaccumulated isotope-labeled HOCs in the soil treated with 1 % microplastics ranged from 6.9 % to 46.4 %, which were higher than those in the soil treated with 0.1 % microplastics. Treatments with the smallest microplastic particles were observed to have the highest relative fractions of bioaccumulated isotope-labeled HOCs, with the exception of phenanthrene, suggesting greater vector effects of smaller microplastic particles. Biodynamic model analysis indicated that the contribution of dermal uptake to the bioaccumulation of isotope-labeled HOCs was higher than that for unlabeled HOCs. This proposed method can be used as a tool to assess the prospective vector effects of microplastics in complex environmental conditions and would enhance the comprehensive understanding of the microplastic vector effects for HOC bioaccumulation.

A screening model for predicting the potential of soil colloids-enhanced leaching of hydrophobic organic contaminants to groundwater at contaminated sites

Modeling the fate and transport of organic pollutants at contaminated sites is critical for risk assessment and management practices, such as establishing realistic cleanup standards or remediation endpoints. Against the conventional wisdom that highly hydrophobic persistent organic pollutants (POPs) (e.g., polybrominated diphenyl ethers and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons) in surface soils are essentially immobile, mounting evidence has demonstrated the potential of these contaminants leaching into the groundwater, due to enhanced transport by soil colloids. Here, we develop a Colloids-Enhanced Transport (CET) model, which can be used as a simple screening tool to predict the leaching potential of POPs into groundwater, as mediated by soil colloids. The CET model incorporates several processes, including the release of POPs-bearing colloids into the porewater, the vertical transport of colloids and associated POPs in the vadose zone, the mixing of POPs-containing soil leachate with groundwater, and the migration of POPs-bearing colloids in saturated zone. Thus, using parameters that can be easily obtained (e.g., annual rainfall, soil type, and common hydrogeological properties of the subsurface porous media), the CET model can estimate the concentrations of POPs in the saturated zone from the observed POPs concentrations in surface or shallow subsurface zones. The CET model can also be used to derive soil quality standards or cleanup endpoints by back-calculating soil concentrations based on groundwater protection limits.

Preferential association of PBDEs and PAHs with mineral particles vs. dissolved organic carbon: Implications for groundwater contamination at e-waste sites

Polybrominated biphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are commonly detected contaminants at e-waste recycling sites. Against the conventional wisdom that PBDEs and PAHs are highly immobile and persist primarily in shallow surface soils, increasing evidence shows that these compounds can leach into the groundwater. Herein, we compare the leachabilities of PBDEs vs. PAHs from contaminated soils collected at an e-waste recycling site in Tianjin, China. Considerable amounts of BDE-209 (0.3–2 ng/L) and phenanthrene (42–106 ng/L), the most abundant PBDE and PAH at the site, are detected in the effluents of columns packed with contaminated soils, with the specific concentrations varying with hydrodynamic and solution chemistry conditions. Interestingly, the leaching potential of BDE-209 appears to be closely related to the release of colloidal mineral particles, whereas the leachability of phenanthrene correlates well with the concentration of dissolved organic carbon in the effluent, but showing essentially no correlation with the concentration of mineral particles. The surprisingly different trends of the leachability observed between BDE-209 and phenanthrene is counterintuitive, as PBDEs and PAHs often co-exist at e-waste recycling sites (particularly at the sites wherein incineration is being practiced) and share many similarities in terms of physicochemical properties. One possible explanation is that due to its extremely low solubility, BDE-209 predominantly exists in free-phase (i.e., as solid (nano)particles), whereas the more soluble phenanthrene is mainly sorbed to soil organic matter. Findings in this study underscore the need to better understand the mobility of highly hydrophobic organic contaminants at contaminated sites for improved risk management.

A machine learning and experimental-based model for prediction of soil sorption capacity toward phenanthrene

Sorption by soil is the fundamental basis for environment fate of hydrophobic organic contaminants (HOCs), which varies significantly depending on diverse properties of soils. Therefore, a generalized approach to predict HOC sorption by soils is required. In this study, 488 data points were extracted from references and adopted to develop models for estimating the sorption capacities of phenanthrene in soils using six different machine learning (ML) approaches. The extreme gradient boosting (XGBT) model demonstrated the most favorable performance, achieving a coefficient of determination of 0.91 and root-mean-square errors of 0.24 for the testing dataset. The XGBT model's performance was further demonstrated by comparing with experimental data from batch sorption tests conducted on 20 soil samples collected from 17 provinces of China. The differences between the predicted values and the experimental values were statistically equal to zero (p = 0.14). Leveraging the XBGT model together with soil properties from the Harmonized World Soil Database, the distribution of sorption capacities in Chinese soils was successfully depicted on a national scale. This research is expected to contribute to a deeper understanding of the migration of persistent organic pollutants in terrestrial system. Furthermore, the established model holds implications for more precise and scientific soil environmental management.

Enhancing hexachlorocyclohexane solubility with surfactants and ionic liquids

Surfactant-enhanced remediation of soil can increase the solubility of hydrophobic organic contaminants in water and improve their removal. In this study, the effect of 24 traditional surfactants and surface-active ionic liquids (SAILs) on the solubility of hexachlorocyclohexane isomers (α-, β-, γ-, δ-HCH) was evaluated in batch-type experiments. The combination of two different proportions of a cationic SAIL and an anionic surfactant was also assessed. The solubilisation capacity of the surfactant varied depending on its concentration and structure, but also the HCH isomer considered. In general, the anionic surfactants yielded the best results, increasing solubilisation of HCH up to 2.4 times compared to the control (pure water). α-HCH and γ-HCH isomers were more easily solubilised than β-HCH and δ-HCH regardless of the surfactant’s type. The main advantage of ionic liquids being their tunability, some clues are given for formulating surfactants to enhance the solubilisation of HCH. The combination of a traditional surfactant and a SAIL influenced the critical micelle concentration, but not the solubilisation of the contaminant. Further studies on the use of blends for this application are required. The increase of solubility achieved with the studied surfactants encourages their application in washing HCH-contaminated soils through solubility enhancement.

Comparative accumulation and effects of microplastics and microplastic-associated PCB-153 in the white hard clam (Meretrix lyrata) and giant river prawn (Macrobrachium rosenbergii) following chronic exposure

Global environmental abundance of microplastics (MPs) is increasing. MPs may sorb hydrophobic organic contaminants (HOCs), accumulate in and cause deleterious effects on exposed organisms. This study investigated and compared the accumulation and effects of MPs and MP-associated PCB in the two indigenous aquatic organisms in Viet Nam, the white hard clams, Meretrix lyrata, and the giant river prawns, Macrobrachium rosenbergii. The test organisms were exposed to either polyethylene microbeads (PEMBs), waterborne polychlorinated biphenyl 153 (PCB-153), or PEMB-associated PCB-153 (PEMB-PCB) over 28 days. Organismal MP accumulation, survival, and weight gain were examined at various sampling intervals. In general, MP accumulation was significantly greater in the clams than in the prawns. A significant quantity of MPs was observed in the digestive systems of the organisms after 0.5-day and during 28-day exposure. Although the effect of MPs and MP-associated PCB-153 on mean survival rate was not statistically significant, this effect was significant towards the end of the 28-day exposure. In addition, while MP-associated PCB-153 did not significantly affect the weight gain of the prawns, it significantly reduced weight gain in clams. Given the global increases of MPs and HOCs (and in southeast Asia specifically), and the importance of the hard clams and giant river prawns in the Indo-Pacific region, this present study provides valuable data to enhance our understanding of the effects of MPs and HOCs on these species.

Size-dependent vector effect of microplastics on the bioaccumulation of polychlorinated biphenyls in tilapia: A tissue-specific study

Microplastics play a significant role in interactions between organisms and hydrophobic organic contaminants (HOCs), leading to a joint toxic effect on aquatic organisms. This study extensively investigated the tissue-specific accumulation of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) resulting from different sized microplastics in tilapia (Oreochromis mossambicus) using a passive dosing device. Based on biological feeding behavior considerations, 1 mm and 2 μm polystyrene (PS) microplastics with concentrations of 2 and 5 mg L−1 were investigated. A physiologically based toxicokinetic (PBTK) model was applied to evaluate the exchange kinetics and fluxes among the tissues. Moreover, an in vitro simulation experiment was conducted to theoretically validate the vector effect. The findings demonstrated that the effects caused by HOCs and microplastics on organisms were influenced by multiple factors such as size and surface properties. The mass transfer kinetics of HOCs in specific tissues were closely related to their adsorption capacity and position microplastics could reach. Specifically, although 2 μm microplastics exhibited high adsorption capacity for PCBs, they were only retained in the intestines and did not significantly contribute to the bioaccumulation of PCBs in gills or muscle. While 1 mm microplastics were ingested but just paused in the mouth and subsequently flew through the gills with oral mucus. Their vector effects increased the desorption of microplastic-bound PCB-118 in the gill mucus microcosm, thereby facilitating the mass transfer and accumulation of PCB-118 in gills and muscle. This study sheds new light on how the size-dependent vector generated by microplastics affects the tissue-specific accumulation of HOCs in aquatic organisms.

Determining buffering capacity of polydimethylsiloxane-based passive dosing for hydrophobic organic compounds in large-volume bioassays

Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) is the most widely used material for passive dosing. However, the ability of PDMS to maintain constant water concentrations of chemicals in large-volume bioassays was insufficiently investigated. In this study, we proposed a kinetic-based method to determine the buffering capacity of PDMS for maintaining constant water concentrations of hydrophobic organic contaminants (HOCs) in large-volume bioassays. A good correlation between log Kow and PDMS-water partitioning coefficients (log KPW) was observed for HOCs with log Kow values ranging from 3.30 to 7.42. For low-molecular-weight HOCs, volatile loss was identified as the primary cause of unstable water concentrations in passive dosing systems. Slow desorption from PDMS resulted in a reduction of water concentrations for high-molecular-weight HOCs. The volume ratio of PDMS to water (RV) was the key factor controlling buffering capacity. As such, buffering capacity was defined as the minimum RV required to maintain 90% of the initial water concentration and was determined to be 0.0076–0.032 for six representative HOCs. Finally, passive dosing with an RV of 0.014 was validated to effectively maintain water concentrations of phenanthrene in 2-L and 96-h toxicity tests with adult mosquitofish. By determining buffering capacity of PDMS, this study recommended specific RV values for cost-efficient implementation of passive dosing approaches in aquatic toxicology, particularly in large-volume bioassays.

The effect of the ageing process on the desorption of nonylphenol in black carbon-sediment systems: a kineto-mechanistic and modeling investigation.

Black carbon (BC) exhibits promising potential as a sediment amendment owing to its commendable adsorption capacity for hydrophobic organic contaminants (HOCs), thereby resulting in HOC-laden sediments. Desorption kinetic studies play a crucial role in comprehending the release potential of HOCs from BC-sediment systems. Although the adsorption capacity of BC for HOCs has been found to decrease with aging, there is limited research on its impact on HOC desorption kinetics. In this study, BCs derived from agricultural waste (rice straw carbon, RC) and industrial waste (fly ash carbon, FC), respectively, were used to investigate the desorption kinetics of nonylphenol (NP). Additionally, a predictive model was established using the fitting parameters obtained from the modified two-domain model. The results showed that desorption of NP was divided into three fractions: rapid fraction (Frap), slow fraction (Fslow) and resistant fraction (Fr). BCs significantly decreased, while ageing increased the desorption amount and rate of NP. The performance of RC in controlling NP release was superior to that of FC. The predicted values calculated by the established model exhibit significant positive correlations with the measured values (p < 0.01). Additionally, the correlation analysis between sorption sites and desorption fractions revealed that the concentration of NP in the desorbing fraction was nearly equivalent to that of NP in partition sites within aged sediment/FC-sediment systems. However, the aged RC-sediment systems do not conform well to this rule. In other words, the estimation of NP release risk from sediments with a strong adsorbent would be overestimated, if Frap + Fsolw is considered equivalent to the desorbing fraction.

Insights into the photocatalytic degradation of hydrophobic organic contaminants on the surface of nitrogen doped silica: New findings of the formation of silicon-based substitution products

In this work, nitrogen-doped SiO2 (N-SiO2) was successfully synthesized to develop an “adsorption-photocatalytic degradation” water purification technology to remove hydrophobic organic contaminants (HOCs). As a representative of HOCs, decabromodiphenylethane (DBDPE) could be efficiently degraded under simulated sunlight after adsorption on the surface of N-SiO2. Due to the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and silicon-based radicals, the photodegradation rate of DBDPE on water-SiO2 interface was 1.5-fold higher than that in water. Furthermore, the transformation pathways of DBDPE on N-SiO2 surface were compared with that in water. Bond breaking and debromination reactions were the common pathways, while hydroxylation and silicon-based substitution reactions were the specific transformation pathways for DBDPE on the surface of N-SiO2. Density functional theory (DFT) calculation was used to reveal the generation mechanism of silicon-based radicals and determine the rationality of the involvement of silicon-based radicals in DBDPE transformation. The energy barriers of silicon-based substitution reaction were comparable to that of hydroxylation and debromination reactions, which confirmed the plausibility of the generation of silicon-based substitution products. This study provides an efficient method for the disposal of HOCs, which also gives some new insights into the conversion mechanism of organic pollutants mediated by silicon-based radicals.

Combining Passive Sampling and Dosing to Unravel the Contribution of Hydrophobic Organic Contaminants to Sediment Ecotoxicity.

Contaminated sediments are ubiquitous repositories of pollutants and cause substantial environmental risks. Results of sediment bioassays remain difficult to interpret, however, as observed effects may be caused by a variety of (un)known stressors. This study aimed therefore to isolate the effects of hydrophobic organic contaminants from other (non)chemical stressors present in contaminated sediments, by employing a newly developed passive sampling-passive dosing (PSPD) test. The results showed that equilibrium partitioning between pesticides or polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in contaminated sediments and a silicone rubber (SR) passive sampler was achieved after 1-3 days. Chlorpyrifos concentrations in pore water of spiked sediment matched very well with concentrations released from the SR into an aqueous test medium, showing that SR can serve as a passive dosing device. Subjecting the 96 h PSPD laboratory bioassay with nonbiting midge (Chironomus riparius) larvae to field-collected sediments showed that at two locations, concentrations of the hydrophobic organic contaminant mixtures were high enough to affect the test organisms. In conclusion, the developed PSPD test was able to isolate the effects of hydrophobic organic contaminants and provides a promising simplified building block for a suite of PSPD tests that after further validation could be used to unravel the contribution of hydrophobic organic chemicals to sediment ecotoxicity.

Predicting apparent adsorption capacity of sediment-amended activated carbon for hydrophobic organic contaminants using machine learning

In-situ stabilization of hydrophobic organic compounds (HOCs) using activated carbon (AC) is a promising sediment remediation approach. However, predicting HOC adsorption capacity of sediment-amended AC remains a challenge because a prediction model is currently unavailable. Thus, the objective of this study was to develop machine learning models that could predict the apparent adsorption capacity of sediment-amended AC (KAC,apparent) for HOCs. These models were trained using 186 sets of experimental data obtained from the literature. The best-performing model among those employing various model frameworks, machine learning algorithms, and combination of candidate input features excellently predicted logKAC,apparent with a coefficient of determination of 0.94 on the test dataset. Its prediction results and experimental data for KAC,apparent agreed within 0.5 log units with few exceptions. Analysis of feature importance for the machine learning model revealed that KAC,apparent was strongly correlated with the hydrophobicity of HOCs and the particle size of AC, which agreed well with the current knowledge obtained from experimental and mechanistic assessments. On the other hand, correlation of KAC,apparent to sediment characteristics, duration of AC-sediment contact, and AC dose identified in the model disagreed with relevant arguments made in the literature, calling for further assessment in this subject. This study highlights the promising capability of machine learning in predicting adsorption capacity of AC in complex systems. It offers unique insights into the influence of model parameters on KAC,apparent.

Influence of Salinity on the Partitioning Behavior of Six Commonly Used Pesticides in Fish Eggs.

Salinity has been reported to impact the octanol-water partition coefficient of organic contaminants entering aquatic ecosystems. However, limited data are available on the impacts of salinity on their partitioning from the aqueous phase to adjacent organic compartments. The pesticides bifenthrin, chlorpyrifos, dicloran, myclobutanil, penconazole, and triadimefon were used to investigate the effects of salinity on their partitioning to capelin (Mallotus villosus) eggs in 5 practical salinity units (PSU) versus 25 PSU artificial seawater (ASW). The partitioning coefficient was significantly higher in 25 versus 5 PSU ASW for bifenthrin, chlorpyrifos, dicloran, penconazole, and triadimefon by 31%, 28%, 35%, 28%, and 20%, respectively, while for myclobutanil there was no significant difference. Moreover, pesticide partitioning to store-bought capelin eggs was consistent with the partitioning observed for the standard assay species, inland silversides (Menidia beryllina) eggs, after partitioning between the eggs and exposure solution had reached a state of equilibrium. The present study illustrates the importance of considering the influence of salinity on the environmental partitioning and fate of hydrophobic organic contaminants in aquatic ecosystems. Selected pesticidal POPs and metabolites in the soil of five Vietnamese cities: Sources, fate, and health risk implications

Large quantities of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) have been used in tropical regions. The fate processes and risks of these legacy contaminants in the tropics are poorly understood. Herein, we investigated the occurrence of three classes of widely used OCPs and their metabolites in surface and core soil from five cities across Vietnam with a prevalent tropical monsoon climate and a long history of OCP application. We aimed to elucidate migration potentials, degradation conditions, and transformation pathways and assess current health risks of these contaminants. Generally, the concentrations of OCPs and metabolites in the soil core were slightly lower than those in surface soil except for hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH) isomers. 2,2-bis(4-chlorophenyl)-1,1,1-trichloroethane (p,p’-DDT), 2,2-bis(4-chlorophenyl)-1,1-dichloroethylene (p,p’-DDE), the sum of dicofol and 4,4′-dichlorobenzophenone (p,p’-DBP), and 2,2-bis(4-chlorophenyl)-1,1-dichloroethane (p,p’-DDD) were the most abundant compounds in both surface and core soils. A uniform distribution of HCHs (the sum of α-, β-, γ-, and δ-HCH) at trace levels was found in almost all soils, serving as evidence of the lack of recent use of HCH pesticides. Higher concentrations of DDTs (the sum of DDT, DDD, and DDE) were observed in north-central Vietnamese soil, whereas appreciable concentrations of ENDs (the sum of α- and β-endosulfan and endosulfan sulfate) were only found in southern Vietnamese soils. Empirical diagnostic ratios indicated residuals of DDTs were mainly from technical DDT rather than dicofol, whereas aged HCHs could be explained by the mixture of lindane and technical HCH. Both historical applications and recent input explain DDTs and ENDs in Vietnamese soil. Total organic carbon performs well in preventing vertical migration of more hydrophobic DDTs and ENDs. The dominant transformation pathway of DDT in surface soil followed p,p’-DDE→2,2-bis(4-chlorophenyl)-1-chloroethylene or p,p’-DDMU→1,1-bis(4-chlorophenyl)ethylene or p,p’-DDNU→p,p’-DBP, whereas the amount of p,p’-DDMU converted from p,p’-DDD and p,p’-DDE is similar in soil core. Non-cancer risks of OCPs and metabolites in all soils and cancer risks of those chemicals in core soils were below the safety threshold, whereas a small proportion of surface soil exhibited potential cancer risk after considering the exposure pathway of vegetable intake. This study implied that organic matter in non-rainforest tropical deep soils still could hinder the leaching of hydrophobic organic contaminants as in subtropical and temperate soils. When lands with a history of OCP application are used for agricultural purposes, dietary-related risks need to be carefully assessed.

Transects of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and organochlorine pesticides in an urban estuary using passive samplers

Hydrophobic organic contaminants (HOCs) are tracers of anthropogenic impacts, which can negatively affect water quality. The relative importance of new emissions versus the remobilization of HOCs from legacy reservoirs is not well constrained. Polyethylene passive samplers were deployed in vertical profiles at four sites to determine the concentrations and gradients of atmospheric and freely dissolved polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and freely dissolved organochlorinated pesticides (OCPs) in Narragansett Bay, an urban estuary. The concentrations of the sum of 20 PAHs ranged from 4.3 to 240 ng/m3 in the air and 3.2–21 ng/L in the water column, dominated by phenanthrene and pyrene. OCP concentrations varied from below the detection limit to 150 ng/L in the water column. Common OCPs included α-hexachlorocyclohexane, hexachlorobenzene, and aldrin. Gradients displayed net deposition for PAHs, but equilibrium through the water column. Results from this study provided evidence that key OCPs displayed mostly similar concentrations (at or near equilibrium) in the water at both Conimicut Point and Block Island.

Assessing the effects of a mixture of hydrophobic contaminants on the algae Rhodomonas salina using the chemical activity concept

The production and release of chemicals from human activities are on the rise. Understanding how the aquatic environment is affected by the presence of an unknown number of chemicals is lacking. We employed the chemical activity concept to assess the combined effects of hydrophobic organic contaminants on the phytoplankton species Rodomonas salina. Chemical activity is additive, and refers to the relative saturation of a chemical in the studied matrix. The growth of R. salina was affected by chemical activity, following a chemical activity-response curve, resulting in an Ea50 value of 0.078, which falls within the baseline toxicity range observed in earlier studies. The chlorophyll a content exhibited both increases and decreases with rising chemical activity, with the increase possibly linked to an antioxidant mechanism. Yet, growth inhibition provided more sensitive and robust responses compared to photosynthesis-related endpoints; all measured endpoints correlated with increased chemical activity. Growth inhibition is an ecologically relevant endpoint and integrates thermodynamic principles such as membrane disruption. Our study utilized passive dosing, enabling us to control exposure and determine activities in both the medium and the algae. The concept of chemical activity and our results can be extended to other neutral chemical groups as effects of chemical activity remain independent of the mixture composition.

Biogenic polymer nanoparticles to remove hydrophobic organic contaminants from water.

Soil and water pollution is of significant concern worldwide because of the consequences of environmental degradation and harmful effects on human health. Water bodies are very much polluted by various organic and inorganic pollutants by different human activities, including industrial wastes. Environmental pollution remains high because of urbanization-induced industrial developments and human lifestyle. It accumulates pollutants in the environment including plants and living organisms. Even mothers' milk is poisoned because of the uncontrolled, widespread increase in pollution. The discharge levels of organic hydrophobic contaminants in the water and soil are increasing rapidly. This severe pollution must be remediated to upgrade the environment and ensure the safety of human beings. It is vital to eradicate soil and water pollution to guarantee sufficient food and water. Different techniques available to remove the pollutants vary according to the type of pollutants. Hydrophobic contaminants are more dangerous than heavy metals and other pollutants; they cannot be easily removed, requiring special care. Hydrophobic organoxenobiotics released in the environment pose severe contamination in soil and water. Therefore, developing efficient and cost-effective processes is necessary to remove hydrophobic contaminants from soil and water. With nanoparticle-mediated remediation techniques, the green-synthesized nanoparticles exhibit improved performance. This review consolidates reports on the remediation techniques of hydrophobic contaminants, focusing on green-synthesized remediation agents. The very limited works on green synthesis of polymeric nanoparticles, particularly polyurethane-based materials for organic contaminants removal demand more attention in this area. PRACTITIONER POINTS: Consolidated the effects of hydrophobic organic and plastic contaminants on environment degradation. Summarized the advantages of green synthesized polymer nanoparticles for efficient removal of hydrophobic contaminants. Discussed the different sources of pollution and remediation techniques referring 112 research works.

Hydrophobic organic contaminants affiliated with polymer-specific microplastics in urban river tributaries and estuaries

Exposure to microplastics (MPs) and hydrophobic organic contaminants (HOCs) combined at high concentrations may induce adverse effects to aquatic organisms in laboratory-scale studies. To determine environmentally relevant concentrations of HOCs in MPs, it is essential to understand the occurrence of MP-affiliated HOCs in the aquatic environment. Here we report the occurrences of HOCs affiliated with polymer-specific floating MPs from 12 tributaries and three estuaries in the Pearl River Delta, South China. Target HOCs include nine synthetic musks (SMs), 14 ultraviolet adsorbents (UVAs), 15 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), eight polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), and 14 polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). Average concentrations of MP-affiliated ∑9SM, ∑14UVA, ∑15PAH, ∑8PBDE, and ∑14PCB were 1790, 5550, 1090, 412, and 107 ng g−1, respectively. The average concentrations of HOCs affiliated with MPs of different polymer types were 9790, 7220, 72,500, and 55,800 ng g−1 for polyethylene (PE), polypropylene, polystyrene, and other MPs, respectively. As the concentration of PE was the highest among all MPs at the average concentration of 0.77 mg m−3, the monthly outflow of PE-affiliated HOCs accounted for the largest proportion (46 %) in the outflow of MP-affiliated HOCs (2.8 g) to the coastal ocean via three estuaries. These results suggest that HOCs were highly concentrated in MPs and varied among different chemicals and polymer types. Due to the differences of polymer characteristics and half-life of affiliated chemicals, future toxicology studies concerning exposure to these combined pollutants may need to specify polymer types and their affiliated chemicals.
