Enhancing workflow efficiency with a modified Firefly Algorithm for hybrid cloud edge environments

Efficient scheduling of scientific workflows in hybrid cloud-edge environments is crucial for optimizing resource utilization and minimizing completion time. In this study, we evaluate various scheduling algorithms, emphasizing the Modified Firefly Optimization Algorithm (ModFOA) and comparing it with established methods such as Ant Colony Optimization (ACO), Genetic Algorithm (GA), and Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO). We investigate key performance metrics, including makespan, resource utilization, and energy consumption, across both cloud and edge configurations. Scientific workflows often involve complex tasks with dependencies, which can challenge traditional scheduling algorithms. While existing methods show promise, they may not fully address the unique demands of hybrid cloud-edge environments, potentially leading to suboptimal outcomes. Our proposed ModFOA integrates cloud and edge computing resources, offering an effective solution for scheduling workflows in these hybrid environments. Through comparative analysis, ModFOA demonstrates improved performance in reducing makespan and completion times, while maintaining competitive resource utilization and energy efficiency. This study highlights the importance of incorporating cloud-edge integration in scheduling algorithms and showcases ModFOA’s potential to enhance workflow efficiency and resource management across hybrid environments. Future research should focus on refining ModFOA’s parameters and validating its effectiveness in practical hybrid cloud-edge scenarios.

Job Scheduling in Hybrid Clouds With Privacy Constraints: A Deep Reinforcement Learning Approach

ABSTRACTWith the proliferation of cloud computing and the escalating demand for extensive data processing capabilities, an increasing number of enterprises are embracing hybrid cloud solutions. However, as more businesses move toward hybrid clouds, the need for effective solutions to privacy and security concerns becomes increasingly important. Although current scheduling approaches for cloud computing have addressed privacy protection to some extent, few have adequately considered the unique challenges posed by hybrid clouds. To address this gap, we propose a novel approach for scheduling jobs in hybrid clouds that prioritizes privacy protection. Our approach, called PH‐DRL, leverages Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) to intelligently allocate jobs to virtual machines, optimizing both privacy and Quality of Service (QoS), while minimizing response time. We present the detailed implementation of our approach and our experimental results demonstrate the superior performance of PH‐DRL in terms of privacy protection compared to existing methods.

Efficient energy consumption in hybrid cloud environment using adaptive backtracking virtual machine consolidation

Virtualization is the process of sharing physical machine resources into multiple Virtual Machines (VMs) for the effective utilization of resources. The major issues are in handling physical resources such as high demand of resources, infrastructure issues and operational issues. Also violating Service Level Agreement (SLA) is another problem to lead the violations. In this case, VM consolidation method is used to migrate the VMs and optimize the efficient way to use the resources. So we get minimized energy consumptions. Existing methods has increased energy consumption and overhead issues. In this paper we propose adaptive backtracking methods to provide VM consolidation based on less energy consumptions. We use Adaptive Hill Climbing and Pursuit algorithms to consolidate the VMs and use the VMs with efficient energy consumption. We implement this simulations using Matlab in Hybrid Cloud Environment. The performance factors are obtained with less energy consumption and compare the results with existing methods. Overall our proposed system is achieving 95% of accuracy index with lower energy consumption such as 28%, 30% and 32% with multiple VMs consolidations.

Security-Aware Deadline Constraint Task Scheduling using Hybrid Optimization of Modified Flying Squirrel Genetic Chameleon Swarm Algorithm

Cloud computing enables cost-effective resource sharing in hybrid clouds to tackle the problem of insufficient resources by elastically scaling the service capability based on the users’ needs. However, task scheduling (TS) in cloud environments is challenging due to deadline-based performance and security constraints. To remove the existing drawbacks based on deadline and security constraints, a Security-Aware Deadline Constraint TS (SADCTS) approach is presented using a hybrid optimization algorithm of the Modified Flying Squirrel Genetic Chameleon Swarm Algorithm (MFSGCSA). The proposed MFSGCSA is developed by integrating the genetic operators into CSA and combining it with the modified Flying Squirrel Optimization (FSO) algorithm in which the position update and global search equations are enhanced by adaptive probability factor to reduce the local optimum problem. In this SADCTS approach, the task assignment process is modeled into an NP-hard problem concerning a multi-level security model using user authentication, integrity, and confidentiality. This maximizes tasks’ completion rate and decreases the resource costs to process tasks with different deadline limitations. The optimal schedule sequence is obtained by MFSGCSA, where tasks are scheduled concurrently based on security constraints, demand, and deadlines to improve the prominence of cost, energy, and makespan. Experiments are simulated using the CloudSim toolkit, and the comparative outcomes show that the suggested SADCTS approach reduced the makespan, cost, and energy by 5-20% more than the traditional methods. Thus, SADCTS provides less task violation of 0.0001%, high energy efficiency of 700GHz/W, high resource utilization of 92%, less cost efficiency of 72GHz/$, and less makespan of 480minutes to satisfy the necessary security and deadline requirements for TS in shared resource hybrid clouds.

HYBRID CLOUD DATABASES FOR BIG DATA ANALYTICS: A REVIEW OF ARCHITECTURE, PERFORMANCE, AND COST EFFICIENCY

The study synthesizes findings from 40 peer-reviewed articles published between 2015 and 2024, focusing on key factors that affect the performance of hybrid cloud databases, such as workload distribution, network latency, and the use of advanced data analytics tools like Hadoop and Spark. The review also explores cost-saving mechanisms, including dynamic resource scaling and pay-as-you-go pricing models, which help organizations reduce infrastructure costs by up to 28%. Additionally, it discusses the security risks and privacy concerns associated with hybrid cloud environments, highlighting the effectiveness of encryption protocols and identity access management systems in mitigating data breaches by as much as 40%. Furthermore, the review identifies emerging trends in the integration of machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI), which have significantly enhanced system automation and resource optimization in hybrid cloud infrastructures, leading to performance improvements of up to 45%.

RT-PPS: Real-time privacy-preserving scheme for cloud-hosted IoT data

The Internet of Things (IoT) is a rapidly growing network of devices that can communicate with each other and with cloud-based services. These devices generate vast amounts of data that can be used to provide valuable insights into user behavior, environmental conditions, and other important factors. However, as this data is collected and processed by cloud-hosted services, there is a growing concern about privacy and security. Without adequate protection, sensitive information could be exposed to hackers or other malicious actors, putting both individuals and organizations at risk. To address this challenge, real-time privacy-preserving techniques can be used to protect IoT data without compromising its value. This paper introduces an efficient Real-time privacy-preserving scheme (RT-PPS) for cloud-hosted IoT data. RT-PPS employs multi-authority attribute-based encryption on a hybrid cloud environment to keep data secure and private, while still allowing it to be processed and analyzed by cloud-hosted services. RT-PPS has efficient response time and resource consumption, which gives it the ability to handle a huge number of concurrent users at the same time without notable delay. The proposed RT-PPS has been validated through extensive experimental evaluation on a variety of configurations. Moreover, the proposed scheme has been computationally compared with the state-of-the-artwork. RT-PPS has shown excellent performance, effectiveness, and efficiency. The RT-PPS encryption time for a 1 GB dataset while considering 1024 slices is approximately 1000 ms. Also, the RT-PPS decryption time for a 1 GB ciphertext while considering 1024 slices are approximately 235 ms. Finally, RT-PPS is proven secure against any polynomial-time attacks and their variations that have at most a negligible advantage in the introduced security model. Moreover compared to most of the state-of-the-artwork, RT-PPS reduced the ciphertext size and lowered the computations in the encryption, key generation, decryption, and ciphertext update while assuring their security. By implementing RT-PPS, organizations can take advantage of the benefits of IoT data while protecting the privacy of their users and maintaining the security of their systems.

Optimizing resource utilization in cloud and fog computing environments using Hidden Markov Model

Abstract The massive volumes of data IoT devices generate are processed on the cloud. Fog computing, a hybrid cloud, and IoT solution, is used to distribute workloads and allocate resources efficiently, but it requires much research to implement. The study investigates load balancing in fog and cloud computing environments, which is crucial for managing IoT data. Cloud computing centralizes data processing and storage in remote storage facilities, whereas fog computing decentralizes functions to intermediary nodes closer to data generation and consumption. This close proximity facilitates optimal bandwidth usage, decrease delay, and faster computing. This study uses Hidden Markov Model (HMM) to examine task behaviour’s across diverse computing nodes and consider resource requirements. This study captures the probabilistic nature of load distribution by constructing emission and transition matrices from observed task dynamics and node-specific information. This research demonstrates the effectiveness of HMM in describing and optimizing load-balancing tactics, HMM play a vital role in optimizing load balancing tactics, as they model resource utilization, providing insights into enhancing resource allocation efficiency within complex computing infrastructures. The accuracy of the proposed method is approximately 92%.

History Matching Reservoir Models With Many Objective Bayesian Optimization

ABSTRACTReservoir models for predicting subsurface fluid and rock behaviors can now include upwards of billions (and potentially trillions) of grid cells and are pushing the limits of computational resources. History matching, where models are updated to match existing historical data more closely, is conducted to reduce the number of simulation runs and is one of the primary time‐consuming tasks. As models get larger the number of parameters to match increases, and the number of objective functions increases, and traditional methods start to reach their limitations. To solve this, we propose the use of Bayesian optimization (BO) in a hybrid cloud framework. BO iteratively searches for an optimal solution in the simulations campaign through the refinement of a set of priors initialized with a set of simulation results. The current simulation platform implements grid management and a suite of linear solvers to perform the simulation on large scale distributed‐memory systems. Our early results using the hybrid cloud implementation shown here are encouraging on tasks requiring over 100 objective functions, and we propose integrating BO as a built‐in module to efficiently iterate to find an optimal history match of production data in a single package platform. This paper reports on the development of the hybrid cloud BO based history matching framework and the initial results of the application to reservoir history matching.

Human BioMolecular Atlas Program (HuBMAP): 3D Human Reference Atlas Construction and Usage.

The Human BioMolecular Atlas Program (HuBMAP) aims to construct a reference 3D structural, cellular, and molecular atlas of the healthy adult human body. The HuBMAP Data Portal (https://portal.hubmapconsortium.org) serves experimental datasets and supports data processing, search, filtering, and visualization. The Human Reference Atlas (HRA) Portal (https://humanatlas.io) provides open access to atlas data, code, procedures, and instructional materials. Experts from more than 20 consortia are collaborating to construct the HRA's Common Coordinate Framework (CCF), knowledge graphs, and tools that describe the multiscale structure of the human body (from organs and tissues down to cells, genes, and biomarkers) and to use the HRA to understand changes that occur at each of these levels with aging, disease, and other perturbations. The 6th release of the HRA v2.0 covers 36 organs with 4,499 unique anatomical structures, 1,195 cell types, and 2,089 biomarkers (e.g., genes, proteins, lipids) linked to ontologies and 2D/3D reference objects. New experimental data can be mapped into the HRA using (1) three cell type annotation tools (e.g., Azimuth) or (2) validated antibody panels (OMAPs), or (3) by registering tissue data spatially. This paper describes the HRA user stories, terminology, data formats, ontology validation, unified analysis workflows, user interfaces, instructional materials, application programming interface (APIs), flexible hybrid cloud infrastructure, and previews atlas usage applications.

Development of a Daily Cloud-Free Snow-Cover Dataset Using MODIS-Based Snow-Cover Probability for High Mountain Asia during 2000–2020

Investigating the changes in snow cover caused by climate change is extremely important and has attracted increasing attention in cryosphere and climate research. Optimal remote sensing-based snow datasets can provide long-term daily and global spatial-temporal snow-cover distribution at regional and global scales. However, the application of these snow-cover products is inevitably limited because of the space–time discontinuities caused by cloud obscuration, which poses a significant challenge in snowpack-related studies, especially in High Mountain Asia (HMA), an area that has high-elevation mountains, complex terrain, and harsh environments and has fewer observation stations. To address this issue, we developed an improved five-step hybrid cloud removal strategy by integrating the daily merged snow-cover probability (SCP) algorithm, eight-day merged SCP algorithm, decision tree algorithm, temporal downscaling algorithm, and optimal threshold segmentation algorithm to produce a 21-year, daily cloud-free snow-cover dataset using two daily MODIS snow-cover products over the HMA. The accuracy assessment demonstrated that the newly developed cloud-free snow-cover product achieved a mean overall accuracy of 93.80%, based on daily classified snow depth observations from 86 meteorological stations over 10 years. The time series of the daily percentage of binary snow-cover over HMA was analyzed during this period, indicating that the maximum snow cover tended to change more dramatically than the minimum snow cover. The annual snow-cover duration (SCD) experienced an insignificantly increasing trend over most of the northeastern and southwestern HMA (e.g., Qilian, eastern Kun Lun, the east of Inner Tibet, the western Himalayas, the central Himalayas, and the Hindu Kush) and an insignificant declining trend over most of the northwestern and southeastern HMA (e.g., the eastern Himalayas, Hengduan, the west of Inner Tibet, Pamir, Hissar Alay, and Tien). This new high-quality snow-cover dataset will promote studies on climate systems, hydrological modeling, and water resource management in this remote and cold region.

A Hybrid Cloud Approach for Secure Authorized Deduplication System Using Facial Authentication

Over the use of peer-to-peer encryption, businesses are able to establish private communication channels between devices or parts of devices, ensuring that no intermediary devices are able to decipher important data as it travels over the network. To safeguard sensitive information like credit card details, PIN numbers, and passwords, privacy is essential. Rather of being handed down orally, this kind of knowledge may be exchanged digitally using messaging programs such as WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger.Most of these apps use what is known as peer-to-peer encryption, a kind of two-way communication in which no one other than the two parties involved can decipher the communications transmitted and received. It is necessary to remember the master password in order to access the password safe, which stores all the passphrases in one account. Other malevolent bots and hackers are prompted to plot an assault and attempt to breach the system by this strategy.Therefore, we provide an encryption technique in our suggested work that relies on the authentic user's facial landmarks. Since it is very difficult, if not impossible, to replicate all of the face characteristics in order to fool the authentication system, this method is extremely strong. To determine the legitimate user's identity, we use the Localised Binary Pattern method in conjunction with the Gabor Wavelet on the locality preserving projection model. Both the legitimacy on the peer-to-peer network and the encryption of data communicated across the network channel are supported by the face structure that has been extracted. A Performance Analysis of Hybrid and Columnar Cloud Databases for Efficient Schema Design in Distributed Data Warehouse as a Service

A Data Warehouse (DW) is a centralized database that stores large volumes of historical data for analysis and reporting. In a world where enterprise data grows exponentially, new architectures are being investigated to overcome the deficiencies of traditional Database Management Systems (DBMSs), driving a shift towards more modern, cloud-based solutions that provide resources such as distributed processing, columnar storage, and horizontal scalability without the overhead of physical hardware management, i.e., a Database as a Service (DBaaS). Choosing the appropriate class of DBMS is a critical decision for organizations, and there are important differences that impact data volume and query performance (e.g., architecture, data models, and storage) to support analytics in a distributed cloud environment efficiently. In this sense, we carry out an experimental evaluation to analyze the performance of several DBaaS and the impact of data modeling, specifically the usage of a partially normalized Star Schema and a fully denormalized Flat Table Schema, to further comprehend their behavior in different configurations and designs in terms of data schema, storage form, memory availability, and cluster size. The analysis is done in two volumes of data generated by a well-established benchmark, comparing the performance of the DW in terms of average execution time, memory usage, data volume, and loading time. Our results provide guidelines for efficient DW design, showing, for example, that the denormalization of the schema does not guarantee improved performance, as solutions performed differently depending on its architecture. We also show that a Hybrid Processing (HTAP) NewSQL solution can outperform solutions that support only Online Analytical Processing (OLAP) in terms of overall execution time, but that the performance of each query is deeply influenced by its selectivity and by the number of join functions.

This special relevance stems primarily from the defining characteristic of the aviation industry - the ability to rapidly develop, and is also supported by such important management components as the cost structure, safety and intensity of competition, which play an equally important role both for the domestic aviation industry and for global aviation giants. In the era of large-scale digitalization, the aviation IT industry is facing a number of challenges related to the combination of new distribution channels, social networks, Big data, cloud technologies, etc. One of the main challenges of the time is the need to solve the security problem when software components are distributed and operated in hybrid clouds, the providers of which may be independent from each other. The difficulty lies not only in defining and expressing the desired level of security in software, but also in how cloud services affect security assurances in the aviation industry. However, effective digitalization does not begin with the introduction of the latest technologies, but with the transformation of organizations in order to use the potential of digital solutions.

Deadline-constrained security-aware workflow scheduling in hybrid cloud architecture

A hybrid cloud is an efficient solution to deal with the problem of insufficient resources of a private cloud when computing demands increase beyond its resource capacities. Cost-efficient workflow scheduling, considering security requirements and data dependency among tasks, is a prominent issue in the hybrid cloud. To address this problem, we propose a mathematical model that minimizes the monetary cost of executing a workflow and satisfies the security requirements of tasks under a deadline. The proposed model fulfills data dependency among tasks, and data transmission time is formulated with exact mathematical expressions. The derived model is a Mixed-integer linear programming problem. We evaluate the proposed model with real-world workflows over changes in the input variables of the model, such as the deadline and security requirements. This paper also presents a post-optimality analysis that investigates the stability of the assignment problem. The experimental results show that the proposed model minimizes the cost by decreasing inter-cloud communications for dependent tasks. However, the optimal solutions are affected by the limitations that are imposed by the problem constraints.
