Inhalation of gaseous hypochlorous acid and its effect on human respiratory epithelial cells in laboratory model systems.

During the disinfection of indoor spaces using gaseous hypochlorous acid (HOCl(g)), inhalation is the most common route of exposure for humans. In this study, an artificial human respiratory tract model was exposed to 12-140 ppb HOCl(g) at an aspiration flow rate of 800 mL/s for 15 h in a 1 m3 chamber. The respiratory tract model was equipped with 5th order bronchi and all gas-contact parts were made of silicone rubber with no other chlorine-consuming substances. The concentration of HOCl(g) reaching the lung pseudo-space was approximately 47.4% of the HOCl(g) concentrations in the chamber and was calculated to be very close to zero when the chamber concentration was less than 20.5 ppb. The disappearance of HOCl(g) during inhalation is likely due to the adsorption of HOCl(g) on the gas-contact silicone rubber surfaces. The cytotoxicity of HOCl(g) on respiratory epithelial cells was also examined using human air-liquid-interface airway tissue models. Human nasal epithelium and bronchiolar epithelium were exposed to 100 ppb and 500 ppb HOCl(g) for 8 h and 5 d, respectively. No significant effects of HOCl(g) on cell viability and ciliary activity were observed in any cell type, indicating that low concentrations of HOCl(g）, less than 500 ppb, had no cytotoxic effect.

Intranasal mask for protecting the respiratory tract against viral aerosols

The spread of many infectious diseases relies on aerosol transmission to the respiratory tract. Here we design an intranasal mask comprising a positively-charged thermosensitive hydrogel and cell-derived micro-sized vesicles with a specific viral receptor. We show that the positively charged hydrogel intercepts negatively charged viral aerosols, while the viral receptor on vesicles mediates the entrapment of viruses for inactivation. We demonstrate that when displaying matched viral receptors, the intranasal masks protect the nasal cavity and lung of mice from either severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 or influenza A virus. With computerized tomography images of human nasal cavity, we further conduct computational fluid dynamics simulation and three-dimensional printing of an anatomically accurate human nasal cavity, which is connected to human lung organoids to generate a human respiratory tract model. Both simulative and experimental results support the suitability of intranasal masks in humans, as the likelihood of viral respiratory infections induced by different variant strains is dramatically reduced.

Assessing airflow unsteadiness in the human respiratory tract under different expiration conditions

To enhance the understanding of airflow characteristics in the human respiratory system, the expiratory airflow in a human respiratory tract model was simulated using large eddy simulation and dynamic mesh under different expiration conditions aligned with clinically measured data. The airflow unsteadiness was quantitatively assessed using power spectral density (PSD) and spectral entropy (SE). The following findings were obtained: (1) The airflow is highly turbulent in the mouth-pharynx region during expiration, with its dynamic characteristics being influenced by both the transient expiration flow pattern at mouth piece and the glottis motion. (2) PSD analysis reveals that the expiratory airflow is very unsteady, exhibiting a broad-band attenuation spectrum in the pharynx-trachea region. When only transient expiration or glottis motion is considered, the PSD spectrum changes slightly. When both are ignored, however, the change is significant, with the peak frequency reduced to 10% of the real expiration condition. (3) SE analysis indicates that the airflow transitions into turbulence in the trachea, and there may be multiple transitions in the region of soft palate. The transient expiration or glottis motion alone increases turbulence intensity by 2%–15%, while ignoring both reduces turbulence intensity by 10%–20%. This study implies that turbulence characteristics can be significantly different under different expiratory conditions, and therefore it is necessary to determine the expiratory flow characteristics using clinically measured expiratory data.

Examining respiratory comfort in vernacular and conventional buildings

The study examines the role of air temperature and humidity on heat and moisture exchanges in the human respiratory tract. A human respiratory tract model was built to solve for heat and mass balance under varying indoor temperature (Ti) and relative humidity (RHi) values. Ti and RHi from on-field measurements from Vernacular (Adobe) and Conventional (Brick/RCC) buildings were used as input parameters to this model for computation of temperature (Ta in °C) water vapor concentration (Ca in mg/l) at different segments of the respiratory tract. Results indicate that at the same temperature, relative humidity has a significant bearing on respiratory air conditioning. Also, at a given length of the respiratory tract, the percentage of heating and humidification achieved was higher in vernacular room conditions compared to the conventional room. Excess water vapor loss from the mucus layer in the deeper airway conduits restricts mucociliary clearance causing respiratory difficulties, predominantly in cold regions. Comfortable respiration is an important indicator of health and productivity; however, it is not presently incorporated for indoor comfort evaluation. Insights from the study can lead to recommendations for material selection for the design of comfortable, healthy indoor environments.

Mathematical solutions in internal dose assessment: A comparison of Python-based differential equation solvers in biokinetic modeling

In biokinetic modeling systems employed for radiation protection, biological retention and excretion have been modeled as a series of discretized compartments representing the organs and tissues of the human body. Fractional retention and excretion in these organ and tissue systems have been mathematically governed by a series of coupled first-order ordinary differential equations (ODEs). The coupled ODE systems comprising the biokinetic models are usually stiff due to the severe difference between rapid and slow transfers between compartments. In this study, the capabilities of solving a complex coupled system of ODEs for biokinetic modeling were evaluated by comparing different Python programming language solvers and solving methods with the motivation of establishing a framework that enables multi-level analysis. The stability of the solvers was analyzed to select the best performers for solving the biokinetic problems. A Python-based linear algebraic method was also explored to examine how the numerical methods deviated from an analytical or semi-analytical method. Results demonstrated that customized implicit methods resulted in an enhanced stable solution for the inhaled 60Co (Type M) and 131I (Type F) exposure scenarios for the inhalation pathway of the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) Publication 130 Human Respiratory Tract Model (HRTM). The customized implementation of the Python-based implicit solvers resulted in approximately consistent solutions with the Python-based matrix exponential method (expm). The differences generally observed between the implicit solvers and expm are attributable to numerical precision and the order of numerical approximation of the numerical solvers. This study provides the first analysis of a list of Python ODE solvers and methods by comparing their usage for solving biokinetic models using the ICRP Publication 130 HRTM and provides a framework for the selection of the most appropriate ODE solvers and methods in Python language to implement for modeling the distribution of internal radioactivity.

Modified human respiratory tract model to describe the retention of plutonium in scar tissues.

The Human Respiratory Tract Model described in Publication 130 of the International Commission on Radiological Protection provides some mechanisms to account for retention of material that can be subject to little to no mechanical transport or absorption into the blood. One of these mechanisms is 'binding', which refers to a process by which a fraction ('bound fraction') of the dissolved material chemically binds to the tissue of the airway wall. The value of the bound fraction can have a significant impact on the radiation doses imparted to different parts of the respiratory tract. To properly evaluate-and quantify-bound fraction for an element, one would need information on long-term retention of the element in individual compartments of the respiratory tract. Such data on regional retention of plutonium in the respiratory tract of four workers-who had inhaled materials with solubility ranging from soluble nitrate to very insoluble high-fired oxides-were obtained at the United States Transuranium and Uranium Registries. An assumption of bound fraction alone was found to be inconsistent with this dataset and also with a review of the literature. Several studies show evidence of retention of a large amount of Pu activity in the scar tissues of humans and experimental animals, and accordingly, a model structure with scar-tissue compartments was proposed. The transfer rates to these compartments were determined using Markov Chain Monte Carlo analysis of the bioassay and post-mortem data, considering the uncertainties associated with deposition, dissolution and particle clearance parameters. The models predicted that a significant amount-between 20 and 100% for the cases analyzed-of plutonium retained in the respiratory tract was sequestered in the scar tissues. Unlike chemically-bound Pu that irradiates sensitive epithelial cells, Pu in scar tissues may not be dosimetrically significant because the scar tissues absorb most, if not all, of the energy from alpha emissions.

Changes induced in the human respiratory tract by chronic cigarette smoking can reduce the dose to the lungs from exposure to radon progeny

Chronic cigarette smoking leads to changes in the respiratory tract that might affect the dose received from exposure to radon progeny. In this study, changes induced by cigarette smoking in the respiratory tract were collected from the literature and used for calculation of the dose received by the lungs and organs outside the respiratory tract. Morphological and physiological parameters affected by chronic smoking were implemented in the human respiratory tract model (HRTM) used by the International Commission of Radiological Protection (ICRP). Smokers were found to receive lung doses 3% smaller than the ICRP reference worker (non-smoking reference adult male) in mines and 14% smaller in indoor workplaces and tourist caves. A similar dose reduction was found for the extrathoracic region of the HRTM. Conversely, kidneys, brain, and bone marrow of smokers were found to receive from 2.3- up to 3-fold of the dose received by the respective organ in the ICRP reference worker, although they remained at least two orders of magnitude smaller than the lung dose. These results indicate that the differences in the lung dose from radon progeny exposure in cigarette smokers and non-smokers are smaller than 15%.

Effect of Electronic Cigarette Liquid pH on Retention of 11C-Nicotine in a Respiratory Tract Model.

Based on our preliminary 11C-nicotine positron emission tomography (PET) imaging studies in humans, we speculated that greater deposition of nicotine in the respiratory tract from electronic cigarettes compared to combustible cigarettes could result from the alkaline pH of typical aerosol-producing electronic cigarette liquids (e-liquids). To address this hypothesis, we assessed the effect of e-liquid pH on the retention of nicotine in vitro using 11C-nicotine, PET, and a human respiratory tract model of nicotine deposition. A single 2-second 35-mL puff was delivered to a human respiratory tract cast from a 2.8-Ohm cartomizer at 4.1 volts. Immediately after the puff, a 2-second 700-mL air wash-in volume was administered. E-liquids (glycerol and propylene glycol 50/50 vol/vol) containing 24 mg/mL nicotine were mixed with 11C-nicotine. Deposition (retention) of nicotine was assessed using a GE Discovery MI DR PET/CT scanner. Eight e-liquids with different pH values (range 5.3-9.6) were investigated. All experiments were performed at room temperature and at a relative humidity of 70%-80%. Retention of nicotine in the respiratory tract cast was pH dependent and the pH-sensitive component of the retention was well described by a sigmoid curve. In total, 50% of the maximal pH-dependent effect was observed at pH 8.0, which is close to the pKa2 of nicotine. The retention of nicotine in the respiratory tract conducting airways is dependent on the e-liquid pH. Lowering the e-liquid pH reduces retention of nicotine. Nonetheless, reduction of the pH below 7 has little effect, consistent with the pKa2 of protonated nicotine. Similar to combustible cigarettes, the retention of nicotine in the human respiratory tract from consumption of electronic cigarettes may have some health consequences and affect nicotine dependence. Here we demonstrated that the retention of nicotine in the respiratory tract is dependent on the e-liquid pH, and lowering pH reduces retention of nicotine in conducting airways of the respiratory tract. Therefore, e-cigarettes with low pH values would result in reduced respiratory tract nicotine exposure and faster delivery of nicotine to the central nervous system (CNS). The latter can be associated with e-cigarette abuse liability and the effectiveness of e-cigarettes as substitutes for combustible cigarettes.

Study on the coal dust deposition fraction and site in the upper respiratory tract under different particle sizes and labor intensities

In order to study the dust exposure amount and coal dust deposition rule of coal miners under different labor intensity in coal mine environment, an airflow-particle two-phase coupling calculation model of human upper respiratory tract was established based on Euler-Lagrange framework, and the airflow field in the upper respiratory tract and the characteristics of coal dust deposition were simulated and studied. By comparing the experimental data, the relative error of simulation is in the range of 1.5 %–11.2 %. The results showed that the total deposition fraction of 1 μm dust was the smallest (0.61–1.20 %), and was relatively less affected by respiratory intensity, and the overall distribution was uniform. When the dust particle size increased to 7.07 μm, the total dust deposition fraction in the nasal cavity, pharynx and larynx was in the range of 11.10 %–20.91 %, and increased with the respiratory intensity. When the dust particle size was large, the dust particles of 20 μm and 80 μm were mostly concentrated in the front of the nasal cavity, and the deposition amount of 80 μm dust was about 99.52 %. It was found that with the increase of dust particle size or the increase of labor intensity, the possibility of dust being transported into lungs became smaller. The fitting function of 7.07 μm dust escape rate and labor intensity was obtained, for example, Y7.07μm = 91.73–0.22n (n is labor intensity), and the escape rate of dust with 7.07 μm particle size was up to 88.90 %. Most of them escape from the upper respiratory tract and enter the lungs, which provides theoretical guidance for quantifying the accumulated dust exposure amount in the lungs and monitoring respiratory dust concentration.

A Numerical Simulation of the Airflow and Aerosol Particle Deposition in a Realistic Airway Model of a Healthy Adult

Determining the behavior of aerosol drug particles is of vital importance in the treatment of respiratory tract diseases. Despite the development of imaging techniques in the pulmonary region in recent years, current imaging techniques are insufficient to detect particle deposition. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) methods can fill the gap in this field as they take into account the very different physical processes that occur during aerosol transport. This study aims to numerically investigate the airflow and the aerosol particle dynamics on a realistic human respiratory tract model during multiple breathing cycles. The simulations were conducted on the different breathing conditions for people under light, normal, and heavy physical activities, and the aerosol particles with different aerodynamic diameters (i.e., dp=2, 5, and 7 µm). The numerical results were validated by comparing extensively with experimental and numerical results. The results indicated that the airflow during inspiration and expiration was characteristically different from each other and changed with the inspiration flow rate. It was determined that small-sized particles followed the streamlines and moved towards the distal of the lung under low respiratory conditions. On the other hand, larger particles tended to deposit in higher generations due to the higher inertia. It was found that with the increase of inspiration flow rate the deposition of particles increased for all particles during multiple breaths. For light breathing conditions, low deposition efficiencies were obtained because the particles followed the streamlines and moved towards the distal part of the lung. The particle deposition efficiency under heavy breathing conditions was 28.2% for 2 µm, 33.05% for 5 µm, and 38.4% for 7 µm particles. The results showed that inertial impaction plays an active role in particle deposition.

Transport and deposition of inhaled man‐made vitreous and asbestos fibers in realistic human respiratory tract models: An in silico study

AbstractParticles longer than 5 μm and with a length/diameter ratio >3 are defined as fibers. Asbestos or other fibers are still identified in residential environments due to the emission from asbestos‐used building materials. The respiratory system is the primary route of asbestos exposure; under a longer residence time, asbestos‐related adverse health effects are inevitable. Currently, asbestos fibers have been replaced with man‐made vitreous fibers (MMVFs); however, studies have revealed some similar biological effects of MMVFs with asbestos. Therefore, MMVFs‐induced diseases need to be determined by analyzing their deposition characteristics and foci in human respiratory tracts. In this study, we used computational fluid dynamics method to investigate fibers' airflow and deposition patterns in two realistic human respiratory models. Two drag models were used to predict the deposition of uniform 1 μm (asbestos) and 3.66 μm (carbon fiber‐CF) diameter, 15–300 μm long fibers. Two drag models provided comparable results with the experimental data. Comparatively, asbestos deposition was independent of fiber length, while CF deposition increased proportionally to fiber length. The highest level of local deposition was detected in the anterior nasal cavity. The results obtained from this study can extend current knowledge of human vitreous fiber exposure‐related lung diseases.

Particle Size-dependent Dissolution of Uranium Aerosols in Simulated Lung Fluid: A Case Study in a Nuclear Fuel Fabrication Plant.

Inhalation exposure to uranium aerosols can be a concern in nuclear fuel fabrication. The ICRP provides default absorption parameters for various uranium compounds but also recommends determination of material-specific absorption parameters to improve dose calculations for individuals exposed to airborne radioactivity. Aerosol particle size influences internal dosimetry calculations in two potentially significant ways: the efficiency of particle deposition in the various regions of the respiratory tract is dependent on aerodynamic particle size, and the dissolution rate of deposited materials can vary according to particle size, shape, and porosity because smaller particles tend to have higher surface-to-volume ratios than larger particles. However, the ICRP model assumes that deposited particles of a given material dissolve at the same rate regardless of size and that uptake to blood of dissolved material normally occurs instantaneously in all parts of the lung (except the anterior portion of the nasal region, where zero absorption is assumed). In the present work, the effect of particle size on dissolution in simulated lung fluid was studied for uranium aerosols collected at the plant, and its influence on internal dosimetry calculations was evaluated. Size fractionated uranium aerosols were sampled at a nuclear fuel fabrication plant using portable cascade impactors. Absorption parameters, describing dissolution of material according to the ICRP Human Respiratory Tract Model, were determined in vitro for different size fractions using simulated lung fluid. Samples were collected at 16 time-points over a 100-d period. Uranium content of samples was determined using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry and alpha spectrometry. In addition, supplementary experiments to study the effect of pH drift and uranium adsorption on filter holders were conducted as they could potentially influence the derived absorption parameters. The undissolved fraction over time was observed to vary with impaction stage cut-point at the four main workshops at the plant. A larger fraction of the particle activity tended to dissolve for small cut-points, but exceptions were noted. Absorption parameters (rapid fraction, rapid rate, and slow rate), derived from the undissolved fraction over time, were generally in fair agreement with the ICRP default recommendations for uranium compounds. Differences in absorption parameters were noted across the four main workshops at the plant (i.e., where the aerosol characteristics are expected to vary). The pelletizing workshop was associated with the most insoluble material and the conversion workshop with the most soluble material. The correlation between derived lung absorption parameters and aerodynamic particle size (impactor stage cut-point) was weak. For example, the mean absorption parameters derived from impaction stages with low (taken to be <5 μm) and large (≥5 μm) cut-points did not differ significantly. Drift of pH and adsorption on filter holders appeared to be of secondary importance, but it was found that particle leakage can occur. Undissolved fractions and to some degree derived lung absorption parameters were observed to vary depending on the aerodynamic size fraction studied, suggesting that size fractionation (e.g., using cascade impactors) is appropriate prior to conducting in vitro dissolution rate experiments. The 0.01-0.02 μm and 1-2 μm size ranges are of particular interest as they correspond to alveolar deposition maxima in the Human Respiratory Tract Model (HRTM). In the present work, however, the dependency on aerodynamic size appeared to be of minor importance, but it cannot be ruled out that particle bounce obscured the results for late impaction stages. In addition, it was noted that the time over which simulated lung fluid samples are collected (100 d in our case) influences the curve-fitting procedure used to determine the lung absorption parameters, in particular the slow rate that increased if fewer samples were considered.

Numerical assessment of a 3D human upper respiratory tract model: effect of anatomical structure on asymmetric tidal pulmonary ventilation characteristics

The analysis of airway ventilation characteristic is important for diagnosis and pathological assistance for respiratory diseases. It is therefore imperative to study the impact of anatomical features on the internal flow field. The article is focused on an in-silico study on impact of anatomical structure of human upper respiratory tract on transient asymmetric tidal pulmonary ventilation characteristics. Therefore, a three-dimensional human airways model is reconstructed from nasal cavity up to seventh generation bronchi from computed tomography (CT) images of a 48-year-old healthy man using computational modelling technique. A validated low Reynolds number (LRN) realisable k - ε turbulence model is used to capture the internal flow mixed turbulence characteristics. The numerical simulations were performed for asymmetric low and high tidal pulmonary ventilation (ALTPV, 10 L/min and AHTPV, 40 L/min). The numerical analysis assists to predict the near realistic airway ventilation phenomena and internal flow physics in the upper respiratory tract.

Electric charge of atmospheric nanoparticles and its potential implications with human health

This research presents a pilot project developed within the framework of the COST Action 15,211 in which atmospheric nanoparticles were measured in July 2018, in a maritime environment in the city of Santander in Northern Spain. ELPI® + (Electrical Low-Pressure Impactor) was used to measure nanoparticle properties (electric charge, number, size distribution and surface area) from 6 nm to 10,000 nm with 14 size channels. This study focused on the range between 6 and 380 nm. It considered atmospheric nanoparticle electric charge with surface area, deposited and number by size distribution at human respiratory tract regions in a standard person in Santander according to the human respiratory tract model of ICRP 94. An empirical distribution of nanoparticles deposited in the human respiratory tract model and its electric charge is presented for the city of Santander as the main output. Percentages of total and regional deposition in human respiratory tract model were calculated for the Atlantic climate. Nanoparticles have shown an alveolar surface area deposition plateau with a size distribution range between 6 nm to 150 nm. Negative charge of nanoparticles was clearly associated with primary atmospheric nanoparticles being mainly deposited in the alveolar region where a Brownian mechanism of deposition is predominant. We can demonstrate that electric charge may be a key element in explaining Brownian deposition of the smallest particles in the human respiratory tract and that it can be linked to theoretical positive and negative impacts on human health according to several biometeorological studies. To support our analysis, aerosol samples were characterized with transmission electron microscopy and Confocal Raman spectrometer to determinate morphology, size, chemical composition, and structure. The toxicological effects of the samples with the alveolar surface area had a greater deposition, remain to be studied.

Modelling of long-term retention of high-fired plutonium oxide in the human respiratory tract: importance of scar-tissue compartments

The U.S. Transuranium and Uranium Registries whole-body tissue donor Case 0407 had an acute intake of ‘high-fired’ plutonium oxide resulting from a glove-box fire in a fabrication plant at a nuclear defence facility. The respiratory tract of this individual was dissected into five regions (larynx, bronchi, bronchioles, alveolar-interstitial, and thoracic lymph nodes) and analysed for plutonium content. The activities in certain compartments of the respiratory tract were found to be higher than expected from the default models described in publications of the International Commission on Radiological Protection. Because of the extremely slow rate of dissolution of the material inhaled, the presence of bound fraction is incapable of explaining the higher-than-expected retention. A plausible hypothesis—encapsulation of plutonium in scar tissues—is supported by the review of literature. Therefore, scar-tissue compartments corresponding to the larynx, bronchi, bronchioles and alveolar-interstitial regions were added to the existing human respiratory tract model structure. The transfer rates between these compartments were determined using Markov Chain Monte Carlo analysis of data on urinary excretion, lung counts and post-mortem measurements of the liver, skeleton and regional retention in the respiratory tract. Modelling of the data showed that approximately 30% of plutonium activity in the lung was sequestered in scar tissues. The dose consequence of such sequestration is qualitatively compared against that of chemical binding.

Exercising under particulate matter exposure: Providing theoretical support for lung deposition and its relationship with COVID-19

The aim of the present study was to investigate lung particulate matter (PM) deposition during endurance exercise and provide a new insight concerning how SARS-CoV-2 could be carried into the respiratory tract. The anatomical and physiological characteristics of the Human Respiratory Tract model were considered for modeling the lung PM deposition during exercise. The Monte Carlo method was performed to randomly generate different values of PM concentrations (1.0, 2.5, and 10.0 μm), minute ventilation, and duration of exercise at moderate, heavy, and severe exercise intensity domains. Compared to moderate and severe intensities, during heavy exercise (75–115 L‧min-1, duration of 10.0–60.0 min) there is greater lung deposition in the bronchiolar region (p < 0.01). In turn, there is greater deposition per minute of exercise at the severe intensity domain (115.0–145.0 L‧min−1, duration of 10.0–20.0 min, p < 0.01). Considering that SARs-CoV-2 could be adsorbed on the particles, exercising under PM exposure, mainly at the severe domain, could be harmful concerning the virus. In conclusion, beyond the traditional minute ventilation assumption, there is a time vs intensity dependence for PM deposition, whereby the severe domain presents greater deposition per minute of exercise. The results observed for PM deposition are alarming since SARs-CoV-2 could be adsorbed by particles and carried into the deeper respiratory tract.

Numerical assessment of natural respiration and particles deposition in the computed tomography scan airway with a glomus tumour

The human respiratory tract has a complex airflow pattern. If any obstruction is present in the airways, it will change the airflow pattern and deposit particles inside the airways. This is the concern of breath quality (inspired air), and it is decreasing due to the unplanned production of material goods. This is a primary cause of respiratory illness (asthma, cancer, etc.). Therefore, it is important to identify the flow characteristics in the human airways and airways with a glomus tumour with particle deposition. A numerical diagnosis is presented with an asymmetric unsteady-state light breathing condition (10 l/min). An in vitro human respiratory tract model has been reconstructed using computed tomography scan techniques and an artificial glomus tumour developed 2 cm above a carina on the posterior wall of the trachea. The transient flow characteristics are numerically simulated with a realizable (low Reynolds number) k–ɛ turbulence model. The flow disturbance is captured around the tumour, which influenced the upstream and downstream of the flow. The flow velocity pattern, wall shear stress and probable area of inflammation (hotspot) due to suspended particle deposition are determined, which may assist doctors more effectively in aerosol therapy and prosthetics of human airways illness.

Effects of Modulus of Elasticity on airflow in Human Respiratory airway

In this work, Computational analysis of air flow in human respiratory tract model is done by the use of CFD technique. Fluid Structure Interaction (FSI) method is used on the third-to-sixth generation simplified respiratory tract model for computational study. The modulus of Elasticity is varied in a range of 1 to 5 MPa and its effect on flow-physics is captured inside human airway model. The variation of velocity and its effect on deformation has been captured for both rigid and flexible model and its analysis is carried out. The result from simulation shows that as the Modulus of elasticity increases, wall deformation decreases.

Inhalation of Soluble Plutonium: 53-year Follow-up of Manhattan Project Worker.

This whole-body tissue donor to the United States Transuranium and Uranium Registries was occupationally exposed to plutonium nitrate-dioxide mixture via chronic inhalation. This individual was involved in the Manhattan Project operations and later participated in medical follow-up studies. Soft tissues and bones collected at autopsy were analyzed for 238Pu, 239+240Pu, and 241Am. Fifty-three years post-intake, 700±2 Bq of 239+240Pu were still retained in the skeleton, 661±11 Bq in the liver, and 282±3 Bq in the respiratory tract. Bioassay measurements and organ activities at the time of death were used to estimate the intake and radiation doses using the TAURUS internal dosimetry software. For this individual, an ICRP Publication 130 Human Respiratory Tract Model with case-specific particle size of 0.3 μm, ICRP Publication 100 Human Alimentary Tract Model, and ICRP Publication 141 Plutonium Systemic Model adequately described long-term plutonium retention and excretion. The total cumulative 239+240Pu intake of 31,716 Bq was estimated, of which 24,853 Bq (78.4%) were contributed by inhalation of plutonium nitrate and 6,863 Bq (21.6%) of plutonium dioxide. The committed equivalent doses to the red bone marrow, bone surface, liver, lungs, and brain were 0.71 Sv, 6.5 Sv, 8.3 Sv, 3.8 Sv, and 0.068 Sv, respectively. The committed effective dose was 1.22 Sv.
