Association between Religious Beliefs and HPV Vaccination Attitudes among College Students.

The authors sought an updated examination of attitudes toward Human Papillomavirus (HPV) catch-up vaccination among college students at a private religious university. A total of 1557 college students completed a 62-question survey of religious and HPV vaccination attitudes during the fall of 2021. Students' willingness to receive catch-up HPV vaccination and willingness to vaccinate a future child against HPV were recorded. Of the 46.8% of students who reported being unvaccinated or unaware of vaccination status, ~26% reported being uninterested in receiving catch-up HPV vaccination; ~22% of all students surveyed reported being unwilling to vaccinate a future child against HPV. The strongest predictors of vaccine hesitancy included religious concerns about sexual abstinence and safety concerns. College health professionals can increase the rate of HPV vaccination among college students and subsequent future generations by addressing the safety and utility of the vaccine regardless of intentions for sexual abstinence prior to marriage. Additionally, rather than a uniform approach to all students who self-identify as Christian, an effort to identify and discuss the unique religiously influenced beliefs of individual students is recommended when discussing HPV vaccination.

Factors Influencing Human Papillomavirus Vaccination Among Asian Immigrant College Students During the COVID-19 Pandemic

Despite strenuous efforts to increase vaccination rates against human papillomavirus (HPV), the rate of vaccination remains low in the U.S. The COVID-19 pandemic poses an additional challenge to HPV vaccination. This study aimed to explore the factors that contribute to HPV vaccination among Asian immigrant college students, based on the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB), with HPV vaccine literacy and HPV vaccine hesitancy as additional constructs. This cross-sectional survey used convenience sampling, with133 Asian immigrant college students from New York City as study participants. Data were collected online using self-reported measures of the following study variables: HPV vaccine literacy, attitudes, subjective norms, self-efficacy, vaccine hesitancy, vaccination intention, and HPV vaccination. The data were analyzed using path analysis. Vaccine literacy and vaccination intention directly affected HPV vaccination. Vaccine subjective norms and literacy directly affected vaccination intention. Moreover, vaccine attitudes and self-efficacy directly and negatively affected vaccine hesitancy. These results indicate the importance of developing a multifaceted intervention that considers vaccine literacy and subjective norms to promote HPV vaccination of Asian immigrant college students. Interventions to decrease vaccine hesitancy during the COVID-19 pandemic should focus on improving positive attitudes and self-efficacy toward HPV vaccination.

Knowledge and Attitudes Toward Inpatient Postpartum HPV Vaccination Among Pregnant Women [ID: 1376898

INTRODUCTION: Inpatient postpartum human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination is a novel strategy to increase HPV vaccine uptake; however, data on pregnant women's perspectives are lacking. We sought to assess knowledge and attitudes toward inpatient postpartum HPV vaccination among pregnant women. METHODS: An electronic survey assessing HPV vaccination knowledge, status, and attitudes toward postpartum HPV vaccination was distributed among pregnant women aged 15–45 years engaged in prenatal care at a large health system in Baltimore, Maryland. Reasons for their attitudes toward postpartum HPV vaccination were measured on a 5-point Likert scale. Responses were analyzed using descriptive statistics and χ2 tests. RESULTS: Mean age was 31.3+6.2 years among 309 pregnant participants. Self-identified race and ethnicity included 47.5% White, 29% Black/African American, 11.2% Asian, and 16.2% Hispanic/Latina. 88.7% had heard of the HPV vaccine, 50.5% had received at least one dose, and 35.0% had completed the series. HPV vaccination status did not differ by socioeconomic characteristics (P>.05). Of the 153 HPV vaccine-naive women, 40.0% desired to receive it after delivery, with the top reasons being “I think it is safe” and “I think the protection can benefit me.” 24.2% were not interested (“I don't think it will benefit me” and “I'm worried about the side effects”), and 36.0% were unsure (“No healthcare provider has recommended it to me so far” or “I usually don't say yes to all vaccines”). CONCLUSION: The majority of pregnant HPV vaccine-naive women were willing to receive an HPV vaccine dose postpartum. HPV vaccine education during prenatal care may further increase uptake.

Formative Research on HPV Vaccine Acceptance among Health Workers, Teachers, Parents, and Social Influencers in Uzbekistan.

Human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccines effectively prevent cervical cancer, most of which results from undetected long-term HPV infection. HPV vaccine introduction is particularly sensitive and complicated given widespread misinformation and vaccination of young girls before their sexual debut. Research has examined HPV vaccine introduction in lower- and middle-income countries (LMICs), but almost no studies attend to HPV vaccine attitudes in central Asian countries. This article describes the results of a qualitative formative research study to develop an HPV vaccine introduction communication plan in Uzbekistan. Data collection and analysis were designed using the Capability, Opportunity, and Motivation for Behaviour change (COM-B) mode for understanding health behaviours. This research was carried out with health workers, parents, grandparents, teachers, and other social influencers in urban, semi-urban, and rural sites. Information was collected using focus group discussions (FGDs) and semi-structured in-depth interviews (IDIs), and data in the form of participants' words, statements, and ideas were thematically analysed to identify COM-B barriers and drivers for each target group's HPV vaccine-related behaviour. Represented through exemplary quotations, findings were used to inform the development of the HPV vaccine introduction communication plan. Capability findings indicated that participants understood cervical cancer was a national health issue, but HPV and HPV vaccine knowledge was limited among non-health professionals, some nurses, and rural health workers. Results on an opportunity for accepting the HPV vaccine showed most participants would do so if they had access to credible information on vaccine safety and evidence. Regarding motivation, all participant groups voiced concern about the potential effects on young girls' future fertility. Echoing global research, the study results highlighted that trust in health workers and the government as health-related information sources and collaboration among schools, municipalities, and polyclinics could support potential vaccine acceptance and uptake. Resource constraints precluded including vaccine target-aged girls in research and additional field sites. Participants represented diverse social and economic backgrounds reflective of the country context, and the communication plan developed using research insights contributed to the Ministry of Health (MoH) of the Republic of Uzbekistan HPV vaccine introduction efforts that saw high first dose uptake.

Factors related to human papillomavirus vaccine uptake and intentions among adults aged 18-26 and 27-45 years in the United States: A cross-sectional study.

The current study examined self-reported human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination uptake and intentions, and associations with psychosocial constructs among United States adults aged 18 to 26 and 27 to 45 years. Data were collected via an online survey from participants recruited from a research panel. Outcomes were HPV vaccination uptake and intentions. Multivariable binary and ordered logistic regression models were used to examine associations between HPV vaccination outcomes and psychosocial constructs, sociodemographics, and previous health behaviors. HPV vaccination uptake in both age cohorts (N= 2722) was associated with multiple variables, including but not limited to: provider recommendation (adjusted odds ratio [aOR], 11.63 [95% CI, 7.70-17.56] and aOR, 14.26 [95% CI, 9.52-21.38], for those aged 18 to 26 and 27 to 45 years, respectively) and positive HPV vaccine attitudes (aOR, 2.40 [95% CI, 1.70-3.40] and aOR, 1.46 [95% CI,1.06-2.02]). Among those who did not report or were unsure of prior HPV vaccination (N=1894), only 4.6% and 8.1% (aged 18-26 and 27-45 years, respectively) reported being very likely to receive the HPV vaccine in the next year. Increased intentions were associated with more positive vaccine attitudes (aOR, 2.45 [95% CI, 1.91-3.15] and aOR, 2.19 [95% CI, 1.72-2.78]) and provider recommendation (yes vs no; aOR, 1.97 [95% CI, 1.38-2.83] and aOR, 1.82 [95% CI, 1.31-2.52]; don't know/can't remember vs no; aOR, 1.38 [95% CI, 1.03-1.84] and aOR, 1.60 [95% CI, 1.17-2.18]). Sociodemographics and health behaviors associated with increased intentions differed for each age cohort. Individual and interpersonal factors were associated with HPV vaccination uptake and intentions. Findings reveal the need for targeted interventions to improve HPV vaccination rates among these age groups.

1-2-3! Catch-Up for HPV: A Theoretically Informed Pilot Intervention to Increase HPV Vaccine Uptake among Young Adults

ABSTRACT Background Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is the most common sexually transmitted infection. Current guidelines recommend HPV vaccination during adolescence, but vaccination rates remain suboptimal. Efforts are needed to increase vaccination among the catch-up group (individuals aged 18–26 years). Interventions have primarily focused on education, with minimal success. Purpose This study enhanced an education-based intervention to directly target Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) variables and increase catch-up group HPV vaccination. Methods Using a randomized control design, a TPB-informed psychosocial intervention (n = 41) was compared to education-only (n = 35) and no-intervention control groups (n = 35). Results HPV knowledge, HPV Vaccine knowledge, attitudes, subjective norms, vaccination intention, and vaccination uptake were all more profoundly improved in the TPB-informed intervention. Further, regression models including knowledge and TPB variables predicted intention 1 week later (F(6, 110) = 17.13, p < .001) and uptake 6 months later (χ2 = (7, N = 46) = 25.12, p = .001), accounting for 42–67% of the variance. Discussion These outcomes provide support for disseminating TPB-informed interventions to the catch-up group on college campuses. Translation to Health Education Practice: Interventions for HPV vaccination uptake should include both education and TPB factors to address barriers. Human papillomavirus vaccine beliefs and practice characteristics in rural and urban adolescent care providers

BackgroundThe human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine is recommended for all adolescents age 11–12 years. HPV vaccine coverage remains suboptimal in the United States though, particularly in rural areas. We surveyed adolescent immunization providers in two Midwestern states to assess rural vs. urban differences in HPV vaccine resources, practices, and attitudes.MethodsA cross-sectional survey was sent to all licensed adolescent care providers in a subset of urban and rural counties in Minnesota and Wisconsin during 2019. Multivariable regression was used to identify attitudes and practices that differentiated rural vs. urban providers.ResultsThere were 437 survey respondents (31% rural). Significantly fewer rural providers had evening/weekend adolescent vaccination appointments available (adjusted odds ratio (aOR) = 0.21 [95% confidence interval (CI): 0.12, 0.36]), had prior experience with adolescent vaccine quality improvement projects (aOR = 0.52 [95% CI: 0.28, 0.98]), and routinely recommended HPV vaccine during urgent/acute care visits (aOR = 0.37 [95% CI: 0.18, 0.79]). Significantly more rural providers had standing orders to administer all recommended adolescent vaccines (aOR = 2.81 [95% CI: 1.61, 4.91]) and reported giving HPV vaccine information to their patients/families before it is due (aOR = 3.10 [95% CI: 1.68, 5.71]).ConclusionsRural vs. urban differences in provider practices were mixed in that rural providers do not implement some practices that may promote HPV vaccination, but do implement other practices that promote HPV vaccination. It remains unclear how the observed differences would affect HPV vaccine attitudes or adolescent vaccination decisions for parents in rural areas.

Knowledge, Attitudes and HPV Vaccine Intention Among Women in India.

In India, cervical cancer associated with human papillomavirus (HPV) infection is a leading cause of cancer-related mortality among women. However, uptake of the vaccine in India is low. We assessed knowledge and attitudes towards HPV, assess participants' willingness to accept the vaccination for themselves and their children, and determine factors associated with intention to receive the HPV vaccine among women in Mangalore, India. This cross-sectional study surveyed a convenient sample of 237 women aged 18-45years using a semi-structured questionnaire. All respondents reported being aware of HPV infection. However, 22.36% (n = 53) of the respondents have never heard about genital warts and 18.57% (n = 44) have never heard about HPV vaccine. Participants displayed good general knowledge of HPV infection (median score, 1.26; Interquartile Range (IQR): 1.04-1.52) and average knowledge of HPV vaccine (e.g., median score, 1.18; IQR: 0.73-1.45). HPV general knowledge and vaccine knowledge were associated with intention to receive the HPV vaccine and recommend it to children. Participant awareness of the HPV vaccine predicted vaccine intent for themselves. Participants' willingness to recommend the vaccine for their children was associated with older age, married status, having one or more children, and having a college education. Lack of awareness about genital warts was strongly associated with participants' refusal to get the HPV vaccine or recommend it for their own children (Relative Risk Ratio RRR: 12.21; 95% C.I.: 2.33-63.99). Our study validated the questionnaire as a reliable tool for assessing HPV and HPV vaccine knowledge, attitudes, awareness, and vaccine intentions in women aged 18-45years. Public health education should focus on increasing awareness of genital warts as a sequela of HPV, as well as promote awareness of role and safety of HPV vaccination in -children.

Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection and vaccination: A cross-sectional study of college students’ knowledge, awareness, and attitudes in Villanova, PA

Human papillomaviruses are major causative agents of multiple cancers including cervical, vulvar, penile, anal, and oropharyngeal cancers. Almost all sexually active individuals are exposed to HPV in their lifetime and although not all HPV genotypes are capable of causing cancers, several high-risk subtypes widely circulate. Several HPV vaccines have been developed and successfully utilized to limit the spread of these viruses and reduce rates of associated cancers. Despite their success, HPV vaccination rates in the United States remain low. Studies estimate the highest prevalence of HPV in the United States is among college students. This makes college students an important target for interventions that promote HPV vaccination and prevention. To this end, we were interested in investigating the relationship between low HPV vaccine uptake and attitudes and awareness about HPV vaccination among college aged students. We designed a survey to assess knowledge and perception of HPV and HPV vaccination that could help identify correlations between this knowledge and vaccination status. Overall, the data suggest that factors beyond basic knowledge about HPV infections, such as vaccine safety and social acceptance of vaccination, may have important impacts on vaccination rates. More robust education in these areas, supplemented with education about the benefits of HPV vaccination could be utilized to improve vaccination rates.

Human Papillomavirus (HPV) Vaccination Intent among Mothers of Adolescent Sons: A National Survey on HPV Knowledge, Attitudes and Beliefs in South Korea.

Human papillomavirus (HPV) is one of the most common sexually transmitted infections affecting both males and females but there is an apparent lack of knowledge and apprehension towards male HPV vaccination South Korea. The purpose of the present study was to examine the associations between knowledge and perceptions of male HPV vaccination and vaccination intent among Korean mothers of adolescent sons. We conducted a cross-sectional study using a nationwide online survey. The independent variables were mothers' sociodemographic characteristics, history of HPV diagnosis, general HPV knowledge, HPV vaccine knowledge, and attitudes and beliefs towards male HPV vaccination. The outcome variable was mothers' intent to vaccinate their sons, which was classified into three categories: non-intent, undecided and intend to vaccinate. We performed univariate analysis and multinomial logistic regression analysis. A total of 906 eligible mothers completed the survey. Mothers received low scores on the HPV-related knowledge scales with low ratings on the scale measuring perceived risk of HPV. Approximately 10% of the mothers intended to vaccinate their sons against HPV, 61.0% were undecided and 1.5% already had their sons vaccinated. According to the multinominal logistic regression analysis, having a daughter in the family, mothers' previous diagnosis with HPV, general HPV knowledge, influence, harm, and risk were significantly associated with being undecided and having intentions to vaccinate their sons (p<0.05). Our study revealed that Korean mothers are generally less aware of male HPV vaccination, have low perceived risk of HPV, and remain highly hesitant on vaccinating their sons against HPV. It is therefore important to raise public awareness about male HPV vaccination and alleviate vaccine hesitancy. Such efforts will contribute to improving parents' vaccination intent, increasing vaccine uptake among male adolescents and prevention of HPV-associated diseases.

Misinformation Drives Low Human Papillomavirus Vaccination Coverage in South African Girls Attending Private Schools.

Background: Cervical cancer, caused by persistent human papillomavirus (HPV) infection, is the leading cause of female cancer deaths in South Africa. In 2014, the South African National Department of Health introduced a free public sector school-based HPV vaccination programme, targeting grade 4 girls aged ≥9 years. However, private sector school girls receive HPV vaccination through their healthcare providers at cost. This study investigated HPV vaccination knowledge, attitudes and practices of caregivers of girls aged ≥9 years in grades 4–7 attending South African private schools.Methods: A link to an online survey was circulated to caregivers via an email sent to school principals of all private schools in four provinces enrolling girls in grades 4–7. Following a poor post-reminder response, a paid Facebook survey-linked advert targeting South African Facebook users aged ≥25 years nationally was run for 4 days, and placed on the South African Vaccination and Immunisation Centre's Facebook page for 20 days.Results: Of 615 respondents, 413 provided HPV vaccination data and 455 completed the knowledge and attitudes tests. Most (76.5%) caregivers had good knowledge and 45.3% had positive attitudes. Of their daughters, 19.4% had received ≥1 dose of HPV vaccine. Of caregivers of unvaccinated girls, 44.3% and 41.1%, respectively were willing to vaccinate their daughters if vaccination was offered free and at their school. Caregivers of unvaccinated girls were more likely [odds ratio (OR): 3.8] to have been influenced by “other” influences (mainly online articles and anecdotal vaccine injury reports). Of caregivers influenced by their healthcare providers, caregivers of unvaccinated girls were more likely (OR: 0.2) to be influenced by alternative medical practitioners. Caregivers of vaccinated girls were more likely to have good knowledge (OR: 3.6) and positive attitudes (OR: 5.2). Having good knowledge strongly predicted (OR: 2.8) positive attitudes. Having negative attitudes strongly predicted (OR: 0.2) girls being unvaccinated.Conclusion: Providing free school-based HPV vaccination in the private sector may not increase HPV vaccination coverage to an optimal level. Since misinformation was the main driver of negative attitudes resulting in <20% of girls being vaccinated, an advocacy campaign targeting all stakeholders is urgently needed.

HPV Vaccination Attitudes and Behaviors among General Practitioners in Italy.

This cross-sectional electronic online or telephone survey assessed the attitudes and behaviors regarding human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination and the effect of different factors among a nationally representative random sample of 349 general practitioners (GPs) in Italy. A semi-structured interview was performed between September 2018 and October 2020. Almost all respondents considered the HPV vaccine safe with an overall mean value of 8.8, on a scale ranging from 1 to 10, and 59.9% and 32.6% believed that the vaccination was very effective in preventing the related diseases among 12–26 years’ girls and boys. Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that GPs who had received information about HPV vaccination from scientific journals were more likely to have positive attitude towards the effectiveness of the vaccine in preventing HPV-related diseases in girls between 12–26 years. A large majority (81.5%) of GPs who provided assistance to girls’ patients aged 11–12 years often or always recommend the HPV vaccine to them, and this behavior was more likely to occur in those who believed that the vaccine was very effective in preventing HPV-related diseases in girls between 12–26 years. GPs were more likely to often or always recommend the HPV vaccine to boys aged 11–12 years if they often or always recommended the vaccine to girls aged 11–12 years, if they believed that the vaccine was very effective in preventing HPV-related diseases in boys between 12–26 years, and if they considered the HPV vaccine very safe. GPs should receive information about the HPV immunization to ensure that they routinely communicate with their patient population in order to achieve better coverage rates.

Fotonovela as an Educational Tool to Increase Human Papilloma Virus Vaccination in Puerto Rico

Background: Although vaccines against Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) are readily available, there are still low percentages of vaccinations in the population, especially in underserved and minority groups. Various of educational interventions aimed at increasing knowledge and positive attitudes towards vaccination are already in use. We aim to measure HPV vaccination awareness and attitudes among participants in Puerto Rico after being exposed to seeing the fotonovela. Methods: We administered an online pre and post-exposure survey after seeing the fotonovela. The questionnaire included demographic information, perceived susceptibility to HPV, perceived benefit of vaccination in a committed relationship, intention to vaccinate, intention to encourage others to vaccinate, and attitudes towards the fotonovela booklet. Results: Participants (210) between ages 18-45 years responded to the questionnaire. The surveys showed an increase in the number of individuals who believed they were susceptible to HPV, had an intent to vaccinate, even if they were in a relationship, and encouraged others to vaccinate after seeing the fotonovela. Overall, the use of the fotonovela had favorable educational outcomes since participants could relate to the characters and responded that they had learned a lot from this intervention. Conclusion: Our findings demonstrated that the use of fotonovela booklets is a valuable tool for educating about the HPV vaccine effectively and entertainingly to Hispanic communities.

Pre-post school educational intervention assessment on HPV vaccination attitudes and willingness

Abstract Background In Italy, vaccination coverage against human Papilloma Virus (HPV) showed a decreasing trend during last years. Different reasons could lead to a decrease in HPV vaccination confidence, such as not taking part to school seminars on HPV infection and vaccination. A pre-post intervention study was conducted in order to assess the improvement of knowledge, attitudes and behavior on HPV-related diseases and willingness on HPV vaccination among secondary school students. Methods Two anonymous pre-post intervention questionnaires made up of 25 and 8 items, respectively, were administered to a representative sample of students attending secondary schools of Palermo, Italy. Between the two questionnaire administration, an educational intervention on HPV-related diseases and HPV vaccination, conducted by Public Health medical residents at the University of Palermo, was carried out. Results During 2017/2018 and 2018/2019 school years, a sample of 1702 students, attending 18 first-grade secondary schools of the Province of Palermo, was enrolled. Evaluating a 10-scale likert question on the willingness of the children regarding vaccination against HPV, a significant increase of the average score from 8.50 (SD ± 1.79) to 9.01 (SD ± 1.50) (p value &amp;lt;0.001) was observed after intervention. At the multivariate analysis, male students (adjOR 1.76; 95% CI 1.28-2.42) and students attending schools in areas with a high deprivation index (adjOR 1.25; CI 95 % 1.01-1.55), showed a lower increase in HPV vaccination willingness after the educational intervention. In addition, 188 children from 5 schools of more deprived areas, not yet immunized, were vaccinated against HPV. Conclusions Standardized educational interventions in the school environment could increase confidence towards HPV and other vaccinations among students. Furthermore, vaccination offer at schools could represent a fundamental strategy to increase vaccination coverage, especially in more deprived areas. Key messages The research confirms the effectiveness of school educational interventions in increasing HPV vaccination confidence. Self-efficacy and HPV Vaccine Attitudes Mediate the Relationship Between Social Norms and Intentions to Receive the HPV Vaccine Among College Students

Human papillomavirus (HPV) has been linked to genital warts and multiple cancers affecting both men and women. Despite college students' high risk for HPV, their vaccination rates remain suboptimal. The current observational study examined the relationship between social norms and HPV vaccine intentions and potential mechanisms underlying this relationship among undergraduates. Participants (N = 190; 66.8% female) completed a survey assessing HPV vaccine social norms, attitudes, self-efficacy, and intentions. Three mediation analyses were conducted to examine whether self-efficacy and attitudes mediated the relationship between social norms (i.e., parents, friends, doctor) and intentions, controlling for demographic and health care covariates. Social norms were indirectly related to intentions through self-efficacy and attitudes in multiple models (ps < .05). Specifically, perceiving greater support for HPV vaccination from one's friends, parents, and doctor was related to greater HPV vaccine self-efficacy, which, in turn, was related to increased vaccine intentions. In addition, perceiving greater parental and doctor support for HPV vaccination was related to more favorable attitudes towards the vaccine, which, in turn, were related to increased vaccine intentions. Findings suggest potential targets for future interventions to promote HPV vaccination among young adults.

The Impact of Narrative Strategy on Promoting HPV Vaccination among College Students in Korea: The Role of Anticipated Regret.

Human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine hesitancy contributes to unsatisfactory vaccination coverage in Korea despite its high efficacy in preventing various diseases including cervical cancer. To enhance HPV vaccine uptake, effective communication with the public is key. To develop effective health promotion messages, this study examined the effects of message format on attitudes and intentions toward HPV vaccination, specifically focusing on anticipated action and inaction regrets. It employed a randomized experimental message design format (narrative versus didactic messages). A total of 222 Korean undergraduate students who had not received the HPV shot participated in the experiment. The results showed that didactic messages produce greater anticipated inaction regret, which further influences HPV vaccination attitudes and behaviors. Anticipated regret could potentially explain mixed narrative effects across health behaviors as described in existing literature.

HPV and HPV Vaccination Knowledge and Attitudes Among Medical Students in Alabama.

In addition to being the most common sexually transmitted infection, the human papillomavirus (HPV) is associated with six types of cancer in men and women. The HPV vaccine provides long-lasting, effective protection from high-risk HPV infection, thus serving as a means of cancer prevention. An effective healthcare provider recommendation is well-established as the most significant influence on HPV vaccine uptake, and, as emerging providers, it is critical that medical students receive comprehensive training in this area. However, the type and extent of such training for current medical students in the USA is unclear. An online survey assessing HPV and HPV vaccine knowledge, attitudes, and vaccine status was distributed to all medical students at an Alabama university. Scales were developed to assess composite HPV and HPV knowledge scores and HPV vaccination intentions. Of those age-eligible, 32.1% reported completion of the HPV vaccine series while 15.2% reported partial completion. Knowledge of both HPV and HPV vaccination significantly increased with program year (p < 0.0001 and p = 0.0069, respectively); however, there were knowledge gaps across all years regarding HPV-associated cancers. Attitudes and intentions showed a similar association, with more advanced students demonstrating more positive attitudes toward HPV vaccination (p = 0.0003). There is a need within the current curriculum to include more education and training on HPV, HPV vaccination, and counseling-particularly for students in the first 2years of their program. Implementation of a classroom module or interactive workshop would likely improve knowledge and attitudes, better preparing students for their future role as potential immunizers.

Sociodemographic and clinical correlates of human papillomavirus vaccine attitudes and receipt among Wisconsin adolescents

Few studies have assessed adolescent human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine attitudes and whether they are associated with vaccination uptake. This study characterized HPV vaccine attitudes among male and female adolescents, identified factors associated with attitude changes, and examined associations between attitudes and vaccination receipt. Surveys were administered to adolescents aged 15–16 years who had not completed the HPV vaccine series. A modified version of the Carolina HPV Immunization Attitudes and Beliefs Scale (CHIAS) was employed to assess barriers, harms, ineffectiveness, and uncertainties scores. Surveys were available from 108 participants; 63% were male and 33% had initiated the HPV vaccine series at baseline. CHIAS scores significantly decreased (i.e., became more favorable) between baseline and follow-up for barriers (p = 0.01) and uncertainties (p < 0.01). At least one sociodemographic/clinical factor was associated with changes in each score. Attitude changes were not associated with receipt of HPV vaccine, although adolescents with higher baseline harms scores were significantly less likely to receive an HPV vaccine dose (OR = 0.67). Adolescents’ HPV vaccine attitudes slightly improved over a one-year period during which an intervention was implemented. More research is needed to learn how parent and adolescent HPV vaccine attitudes form, and how best to address concerns about vaccine harms.

Improving Human Papillomavirus-Related Knowledge and Attitudes Among Ethnically Diverse Young Adults.

Purpose: To make baseline comparisons and evaluate the efficacy of an intervention designed to improve human papillomavirus (HPV) and HPV vaccine awareness, knowledge, and attitudes among ethnically diverse participants.Methods: Design: Pre- and post-intervention surveys. Setting: An urban, Hispanic-Serving South Florida university. Subjects: Three hundred eighty-seven diverse college students attending a gender studies course. Intervention: Students received a brief educational message designed to improve HPV-related knowledge and attitudes. Baseline and follow-up survey data were collected. Measures: Outcome measures included baseline and follow-up awareness of HPV, perceived knowledge of HPV and HPV vaccination, measured knowledge score, vaccine attitudes, and doses of HPV vaccine received. Analysis: Chi-square, analysis of covariance (ANCOVA), and Wilcoxon rank-sum tests were used to compare baseline differences and evaluate the efficacy of the intervention.Results: Hispanic participants had more positive attitudes toward HPV vaccination (62% vs. 44%, p=0.009) and were more willing to become vaccinated (66% vs. 46%, p=0.02) than non-Hispanic participants at baseline. Hispanic women (48%) were more likely to have initiated HPV vaccination than Hispanic men (27%, p=0.006). At baseline, only 30% of participants scored ≥4/7 points in knowledge. Participants' HPV knowledge improved by 41% after the intervention, with no difference by ethnicity in the post-intervention score.Conclusion: The intervention was useful in improving HPV-related knowledge and attitudes among diverse college students. Future studies should examine barriers to vaccination among ethnic minorities.

Factors Influencing HPV Vaccination Intention in Mothers with Elementary School Daughters.

The purpose of this study was to identify the impacts of human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination-related health belief, attitudes toward HPV vaccination, and subjective norms on HPV vaccination intent targeting mothers of elementary school daughters. The study use a correlative survey design. The subjects of the study were 121 mothers of elementary school daughters located in metropolitan city B. All subjects agreed to participate in the study. The data were collected from September 1 to October 18, 2018, and were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Independent t-test, ANOVA with a post hoc Scheffé test, Pearson's correlation coefficients, and stepwise multiple regression. Attitude toward HPV vaccination, subjective norms, vaccination plans for their children, and mother's vaccination status were significant factors influencing HPV vaccination intention. These factors accounted for 72% of the HPV vaccination intention. CONCLUSIONS: This study showed that factors affecting the intention of mothers of elementary school daughters to vaccinate against HPV were HPV vaccination attitudes, subjective norms, vaccination plans for their children, and mother's vaccination status. The biggest influencing factor was HPV vaccination attitudes. Therefore, in order to encourage mothers of elementary school daughters to vaccinate against HPVs, national-level policies should be implemented to create a social atmosphere of positive attitudes toward HPV vaccinations that also emphasizes how easy it is to get vaccinated against HPV. Based on this, mothers of elementary school daughters should be encouraged to have them vaccinated against HPV, thus contributing to improving the HPV vaccination rates of elementary school girls.
