Content-aware QoE optimization in MEC-assisted Mobile video streaming

The traditional client-based HTTP adaptation strategies do not explicitly coordinate between the clients, servers, and cellular networks. A lack of coordination leads to suboptimal user experience. In addition to optimizing Quality of Experience (QoE), other challenges in adapting HTTP adaptive streaming (HAS) to the cellular environment are overcoming unfair allocation of the video rate and inefficient utilization of the bandwidth under the high-dynamics cellular links. Furthermore, the majority of the adaptive strategies ignore important video content characteristics and HAS client information, such as segment duration, buffer size, and video duration, in the video quality selection process. In this paper, we present a content-aware hybrid multi-access edge computing (MEC)-assisted quality adaptation algorithm by taking advantage of the capabilities of edge cloud computing. The proposed algorithm exploits video content characteristics, HAS client settings, and application-layer information to jointly adapt the bitrates of multiple clients. We design separate strategies to optimize the performance of short and long duration videos. We then demonstrate the efficiency of our algorithm against client-based solutions as well as MEC-assisted algorithms. The proposed algorithm guarantees high QoE, equitably selects video rates for clients, and efficiently utilizes the bandwidth for both short and long duration videos. The results from our extensive experiments reveal that the proposed long video adaptation algorithm outperforms state-of-the-art algorithms, with improvements in average video rate, QoE, fairness, and bandwidth utilization of 0.4%–12.3%, 8%–65%, 3.3%–5.7%, and 60%–130%, respectively. Furthermore, when high bandwidth is available to competing clients, the proposed short video adaptation algorithm improves QoE by 11.1% compared to the long video adaptation algorithm.

ARARAT: A Collaborative Edge-Assisted Framework for HTTP Adaptive Video Streaming

With the ever-increasing demands for high-definition and low-latency video streaming applications, network-assisted video streaming schemes have become a promising complementary solution in the HTTP Adaptive Streaming (HAS) context to improve users’ Quality of Experience (QoE) as well as network utilization. Edge computing is considered one of the leading networking paradigms for designing such systems by providing video processing and caching close to the end-users. Despite the wide usage of this technology, designing network-assisted HAS architectures that support low-latency and high-quality video streaming, including edge collaboration is still a challenge. To address these issues, this article leverages the Software-Defined Networking (SDN), Network Function Virtualization (NFV), and edge computing paradigms to propose A collaboRative edge-Assisted framewoRk for HTTP Adaptive video sTreaming (ARARAT). Aiming at minimizing HAS clients’ serving time and network cost, besides considering available resources and all possible serving actions, we design a multi-layer architecture and formulate the problem as a centralized optimization model executed by the SDN controller. However, to cope with the high time complexity of the centralized model, we introduce three heuristic approaches that produce near-optimal solutions through efficient collaboration between the SDN controller and edge servers. Finally, we implement the ARARAT framework, conduct our experiments on a large-scale cloud-based testbed including 250 HAS players, and compare its effectiveness with state-of-the-art systems within comprehensive scenarios. The experimental results illustrate that the proposed ARARAT methods (i) improve users’ QoE by at least 47%, (ii) decrease the streaming cost, including bandwidth and computational costs, by at least 47%, and (iii) enhance network utilization, by at least 48% compared to state-of-the-art approaches.

Low-Latency Live Streaming Over HTTP in Bandwidth-Limited Networks

HTTP adaptive streaming (HAS) can achieve low latency for live streaming with the Common Media Application Format. However, the legacy mechanisms inaccurately measure the available bandwidth because the download time is affected by not only the network but also idle times between chunks at the live encoder side. These wrong measurements may condemn users to a low quality-of-experience (QoE). This letter presents a HAS client with a novel bandwidth measurement heuristic. Our experiments show that it provides a better QoE with fewer video freezes and higher video quality while achieving a live latency down to one second in bandwidth-limited networks.

A machine learning-based framework for preventing video freezes in HTTP adaptive streaming

HTTP Adaptive Streaming (HAS) represents the dominant technology to deliver videos over the Internet, due to its ability to adapt the video quality to the available bandwidth. Despite that, HAS clients can still suffer from freezes in the video playout, the main factor influencing users’ Quality of Experience (QoE). To reduce video freezes, we propose a network-based framework, where a network controller prioritizes the delivery of particular video segments to prevent freezes at the clients. This framework is based on OpenFlow, a widely adopted protocol to implement the software-defined networking principle. The main element of the controller is a Machine Learning (ML) engine based on the random undersampling boosting algorithm and fuzzy logic, which can detect when a client is close to a freeze and drive the network prioritization to avoid it. This decision is based on measurements collected from the network nodes only, without any knowledge on the streamed videos or on the clients' characteristics.In this paper, we detail the design of the proposed ML-based framework and compare its performance with other benchmarking HAS solutions, under various video streaming scenarios. Particularly, we show through extensive experimentation that the proposed approach can reduce video freezes and freeze time with about 65% and 45% respectively, when compared to benchmarking algorithms. These results represent a major improvement for the QoE of the users watching multimedia content online.

Improving QoE and Fairness in HTTP Adaptive Streaming Over LTE Network

HTTP adaptive streaming (HAS) has emerged as the main technology for video streaming applications. Multiple HAS video clients sharing the same wireless channel may experience different video qualities as well as different play-out buffer levels, as a result of both different video content complexities and different channel conditions. This causes unfairness in the end-user quality of experience. In this paper, we propose a quality-fair adaptive streaming solution with fair buffer (QFAS-FB) to deliver fair video quality and to achieve asymptotically fair play-out buffer levels among HAS clients competing for the same wireless resources in a long-term evolution (LTE) cell. In the QFAS-FB framework, the share of radio resources is optimized according to video content characteristics, play-out buffer levels, and channel conditions. The proposed solution is compared with the other state-of-the-art strategies, and the numerical results show that it significantly improves the quality fairness among heterogeneous HAS users, reduces the video quality variations, and improves the fairness among the user’s play-out buffers.

Design, optimization and evaluation of a q-learning HTTP adaptive streaming client

HTTP Adaptive Streaming (HAS) is becoming a key technology for audiovisual broadcasting, although the varying conditions of the networks imply an uneven video quality. So, there are currently many client players endowed with proprietary adaptation algorithms aiming at maximizing the perceived quality. Looking for the best user’s Quality of Experience (QoE), an adaptation algorithm based on the Q-Learning method is proposed. This analysis identifies the variables that best capture the system dynamics and establishes a formulation for the characteristic functions of this Reinforcement Learning method. In addition, suitable parameter configurations for the algorithm are analyzed together with its convergence. Experimental results confirm the ability of the proposed solution to control efficiently the selection of the segment qualities, so that quality switches are minimized and the occurrence of freezes is diminished. Moreover, a performance comparison with other strategies shows that this novel approach outperforms them. Finally, the adaptiveness of this strategy to changing environments is also assessed.

Combining traffic-shaping methods with congestion control variants for HTTP\xa0adaptive streaming

HTTP Adaptive Streaming (HAS) is a streaming video technique widely used over the Internet. However, it has many drawbacks that degrade its user Quality of Experience (QoE). Our investigation involves several HAS clients competing for bandwidth inside the same home network. Studies have shown that managing the bandwidth between HAS clients using traffic-shaping methods improves the QoE. Additionally, the TCP congestion control algorithm in the HAS server may also impact the QoE, because every congestion control variant has its own method to control the congestion window size. Based on previous work, we describe two traffic-shaping methods, the Hierarchical Token Bucket shaping Method (HTBM) and the Receive Window Tuning Method (RWTM), as well as four popular congestion control variants: NewReno, Vegas, Illinois, and Cubic. In this paper, our objective is to provide a detailed comparative evaluation of combining these four congestion control variants with these two shaping methods. The main result indicates that Illinois with RWTM offers the best QoE without causing congestion. Results were validated through experimentation and objective QoE analytical criteria.

Quality of Experience of adaptive video streaming: Investigation in service parameters and subjective quality assessment methodology

The usage of HTTP adaptive streaming (HAS) has become widely spread in multimedia services. Because it allows the service providers to improve the network resource utilization and user׳s Quality of Experience (QoE). Using this technology, the video playback interruption is reduced since the network and server status in addition to capability of user device, all are taken into account by HAS client to adapt the quality to the current condition. Adaptation can be done using different strategies. In order to provide optimal QoE, the perceptual impact of adaptation strategies from point of view of the user should be studied. However, the time-varying video quality due to the adaptation which usually takes place in a long interval introduces a new type of impairment making the subjective evaluation of adaptive streaming system challenging. The contribution of this paper is two-fold: first, it investigates the testing methodology to evaluate HAS QoE by comparing the subjective experimental outcomes obtained from ACR standardized method and a semi-continuous method developed to evaluate the long sequences. In addition, influence of using audiovisual stimuli to evaluate the video-related impairment is inquired. Second, impact of some of the adaptation technical factors including the quality switching amplitude and chunk size in combination with high range of commercial content type is investigated. The results of this study provide a good insight toward achieving appropriate testing method to evaluate HAS QoE, in addition to designing switching strategies with optimal visual quality.

In-Network Quality Optimization for Adaptive Video Streaming Services

HTTP adaptive streaming (HAS) services allow the quality of streaming video to be automatically adapted by the client application in face of network and device dynamics. Due to their advantages compared to traditional techniques, HAS-based protocols are widely used for over-the-top (OTT) video streaming. However, they are yet to be adopted in managed environments, such as ISP networks. A major obstacle is the purely client-driven design of current HAS approaches, which leads to excessive quality oscillations, suboptimal behavior, and the inability to enforce management policies. Moreover, the provider has no control over the quality that is provided, which is essential when offering a managed service. This article tackles these challenges and facilitates the adoption of HAS in managed networks. Specifically, several centralized and distributed algorithms and heuristics are proposed that allow nodes inside the network to steer the HAS client's quality selection process. The algorithms are able to enforce management policies by limiting the set of available qualities for specific clients. Additionally, simulation results show that by coordinating the quality selection process across multiple clients, the proposed algorithms significantly reduce quality oscillations by a factor of five and increase the average delivered video quality by at least 14%.

Design and Evaluation of a Self-Learning HTTP Adaptive Video Streaming Client

HTTP Adaptive Streaming (HAS) is becoming the de facto standard for Over-The-Top (OTT)-based video streaming services such as YouTube and Netflix. By splitting a video into multiple segments of a couple of seconds and encoding each of these at multiple quality levels, HAS allows a video client to dynamically adapt the requested quality during the playout to react to network changes. However, state-of-the-art quality selection heuristics are deterministic and tailored to specific network configurations. Therefore, they are unable to cope with a vast range of highly dynamic network settings. In this letter, a novel Reinforcement Learning (RL)-based HAS client is presented and evaluated. The self-learning HAS client dynamically adapts its behaviour by interacting with the environment to optimize the Quality of Experience (QoE), the quality as perceived by the end-user. The proposed client has been thoroughly evaluated using a network-based simulator and is shown to outperform traditional HAS clients by up to 13% in a mobile network environment.
