ASSESSMENT OF USERS’ SATISFACTION WITH NEW MALE STUDENTS’ HOSTEL AT WAZIRI UMARU FEDERAL POLYTECHNIC, BIRNIN KEBBI

The new male students’ hostel at Waziri Umaru Federal polytechnic, Birnin Kebbi (WUFP BK), Nigeria, has been occupied for over a year and requires a post-occupancy evaluation (POE). This research is a POE of the new male students’ hostel at WUFP Birnin Kebbi. The study population was the 192 assigned residents of the hostel. For methodology, the authors interviewed 2 occupants of the facility, inspected the building, and administered validated survey questionnaires on 96 residents of the hostel determined by stratified sampling. The researchers received 91 completed questionnaires, 7 of which were not usable. The authors analyzed survey data using descriptive statistics and obtained frequencies including the mean and median scores of the quantities measured. The study found that the ‘assessment of space performance and user’s experience’ scored 3.80 mean on a scale of 1 to 5 where 1 was the score of ‘very dissatisfied’ and 5 was the score of ‘very satisfied’. The mean score for ‘assessment of level of satisfaction with facilities and services’ was 2.66. The study concluded that the site selection for the hostel facility was strategic, but the wireless internet service and maintenance practice needed to be improved upon. The research recommended the connection of the hostel to the institution’s wireless internet service bandwidth to facilitate the residents’ learning and leisure.

Conceptualizing university students’ food choices based on theory of planned behavior

Background Several students use hostel facilities offered by their colleges and universities while pursuing higher education. A crucial change is witnessed in their food habits during their stay at the campus, which is vastly different from their home experience. Method The study employs the theory of planned behavior to conceptualize and understand the food choices of university students while following the qualitative research methodology and the phenomenological approach. The snowball sampling method is applied to select participants for the study. We selected twenty-six undergraduate and postgraduate students pursuing programs in technical and health science from a private university at Udupi with residence in the university campus for two to four years. Interviews with candidates were conducted online and audio-recorded with participants’ consent. Results The transcribed interviews were coded and categorized to obtain themes, which were then conceptualized to develop the model based on the theory of planned behaviour. The duration of their stay on campus allowed students to gain a perspective on the food events and the food they consumed at the university dining facility (UDF) guided by factors, such as taste, price, availability of time(during academic activity), accessibility to healthy food, academic stress and lack of knowledge on nutrition. Two factors emerged from the interviews, one, there was no display in the dining facility about the nutritional value of the food served; and, second, students preferred to dine out on unhealthy food rather than at the university because food from outside the campus, even though unhealthy, was easier on the pocket. Conclusion The study provides insights into the role of UDF in serving healthy and nutritional food to students for better health and improved academic performance. This work brings to light the relationship between students’ food choices and their impact on academic performance.

Exploring the Impact of Personal and Administrative issues Faced by Female Students on Satisfaction Levels with Hostel Facilities and their Influence on Lifestyle: A Statistical Investigation

A hostel is a type of housing that provides shared living spaces for travelers and students, particularly offered by educational institutions where students share their living space. This study aims to evaluate the challenges faced by female students living in university hostels and the impact of these issues on their academic performance. Additionally, it identifies common problems such as satisfaction with hostel facilities, security, and how the hostel environment influences their lifestyle. The population for this study includes all female students residing in Peshawar University hostels. Information was obtained from the Provost's office of the University of Peshawar, showing a total of 1951 female students residing in various hostels during the 2015-16 session across all academic programs with an age range of twenty to twenty-five years. An open-ended questionnaire was developed for in-depth interviews, and various statistical tests were employed in this study. The chi-square test of independence was used to examine associations among different factors, revealing significant associations in most cases. The odds ratio was applied to assess the strength of these associations, uncovering a strong correlation between students' health and the type of food provided by the hostel mess. Additionally, a strong association was found between students' academic performance and group discussions. ANOVA was used to analyze the number of girls in the hostel rooms, leading to the rejection of the null hypothesis. To determine student satisfaction with hostel facilities, a logistic regression model was employed. The results highlighted significant factors such as the name of the hostel, education level, water issues, generator availability, toilet conditions, hostel environment, room accommodation, health facilities, mess condition, academic performance, TV availability, internet access, and good security. Consequently, the study's findings can help improve the quality of hostel services in Pakistan, potentially increasing students' satisfaction with hostel life.

Zeal Nexus - Student Abode

Abstract: Effective and thorough processes are critical to the successful operation and management of hostel facilities in the field of hostel management. An effective hostel administration system called Zeal Nexus was created. to use the MERN stack technology to meet these goals. Scalability, usability, and integration possibilities are frequently hampered by the complexity of the current hostel administration systems. These difficulties may make it more difficult to manage hostel operations effectively, which could have an impact on both resident satisfaction and administrative effectiveness. We suggest building the Zeal Nexus, a cutting-edge, comprehensive hostel management system that makes use of the MERN stack—MongoDB, Express.js, React, and Node.js—in order to address these problems. This potent technology stack will be used in our project to create a scalable, responsive, and intuitive Platform. It simplifies the administration of hostels. A wide range of tools for handling resident data, room assignments, maintenance requests, and financial transactions will be available through the Zeal Nexus, all inside a single, easily navigable interface.

Who Demands Technical and Vocational Education in Pakistan? A PSLM Analysis of Socio-Economic Determinants

Purpose: The present study investigates the influence of demographic factors on the demand for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) in Pakistan. The government of Pakistan has implemented various skill enhancement programs to harness the demographic dividend. However, only a small portion of the workforce receives any form of TVET, contributing to a shortage of skilled workers in the country. Many industries, particularly in manufacturing and mining, face deficits in the skilled labour. Consequently, this study aims to examine the role of demographic factors in shaping the demand for TVET within the Pakistani context. Methods: For the TVET demand's estimation, this study employed the Pakistan Social and Living Standard Measurement (PSLM) dataset of 2018–19 by using binary logistic regression analysis (BLRA). The demographic variables include the household's income, household head's education, household size, male proportion of the target age group, household head's age, and region of the household. Findings: The findings indicate that households in the higher income category do not demand TVET. Moreover, if the head of the household is highly educated, then the household is less likely to participate in TEVT. So, the higher the socio-economic status, the lower the probability of demand for TVET from the better-off students. Further, this study also indicates that boys are more likely to participate in TVET-related degrees, while females are less likely to participate in TVET due to the non-availability of institutes and hostel facilities, poor transportation, the limited number of trades available for females, and security issues. Conclusion: The findings provide insightful evidence to support the idea that the higher the socio-economic status of households, the lower the probability of demand for a TVET degree or diploma. Similarly, children of parents with university education are less likely to pursue TVET-related degrees. The reason is likely attributed to the perception that TVET-associated degrees and diplomas are considered inferior due to their lower standing and prestige as compared to general or professional degrees. This study suggests that the attractiveness of TVET can be enhanced by improving the quality of TVET, improving labour market outcomes, and creating a pathway to general education. Overall, this study not only contributes to empirical analyses of socio-economic determinants in TVET demand but also suggests that its findings can be applied not only to South Asian countries but also to other comparable nations with similar cultural ties and affinities.

STUDENT HOSTEL ACCOMMODATION CHALLENGE IN NIGERIAN UNIVERSITIES AND THE PUBLIC-PRIVATE PARTNERSHIP OPTION

One of the most cherished educational assets for students in tertiary institutions in Nigeria and the world is hostel accommodation. This asset provides students with an environment for intellectual development and easy interaction with fellow peers and fosters teamwork and communal spirit among students. Hostel accommodation in most Nigerian tertiary institutions is problematic and scarce too; as such, many students tend to be affected academically and psychologically; this study investigated the challenges of hostel accommodation in Benue State University, Makurdi and suggested the Public Private Partnership (PPP) option. The objectives of the study are to ascertain the causes of hostel accommodation challenges in Nigerian tertiary institutions with Benue State University, Makurdi, in sight, to ascertain the impact of hostel accommodation problems on students' academic performance and welfare and to suggest options best for hostel accommodation challenge in Nigeria tertiary institution. Three research questions guided the study. The study is anchored on the stakeholders' theory by Edward Freeman (1983). A mixed-method research design was adopted for this study. Simple random sampling was used, and questionnaire administration and Oral interviews were conducted to obtain information from 45 respondents. The study found out, among other things, that the over-enrollment of students causes a shortage in student hostel accommodation, inadequate hostel facilities, and a lack of maintenance culture by management/government, which are identifiable sources of accommodation challenges. The study recommends the PPP option and privatization of hostel facilities as the way forward for the best quality and quantity of accommodation in tertiary institutions in Nigeria.

Housing Satisfaction Among International Students in Hong Kong

Housing is one of the critical components that support human existence. However, unequal access to housing is one of the challenges faced by international students. In an expensive city, such as Hong Kong, this issue is exacerbated by high rental cost and a limited supply of on-campus hostel facilities. Therefore, this study examines housing satisfaction among international students who are studying at Hong Kong’s universities, located in one of the most expensive cities in the world. Using the snowball sampling technique, data was collected from seventy-four international students of six nationalities studying at four universities in Hong Kong. Frequency distribution, mean score (MS) ranking and Chi-Square were adopted for the data analysis. The results show that 64% of the research participants reside off-campus and while the rest reside on-campus. Furthermore, a majority of the respondents strongly agreed that the support from the universities for international students in terms of scholarships and financial support to access housing first-year students is very important. The international students opined that the universities could provide more financial assistance and accommodation support to meet rising housing costs. The Chi-square test results indicate a significant relationship between the type of accommodation and overall satisfaction with accommodation, and a significant relationship between the age of the respondents and their choice to retain their accommodation. This study has some far-reaching implications for Hong Kong universities as they need to revisit the issue of accommodation and support provided to international students. Furthermore, there needs to be a consideration in increasing the student housing stock to assist international students.

Institutional Development Management in Boarding Schools (Case Study at the Al-Mawarid Featured Dormitory at Tahfidzul Qur'an Islamic Boarding School Nurul Falah Poncol Magetan)

The background of this research is the existence of the Al-Mawarid Excellent Dormitory program at the Tahfidzul Qur'an Nurul Falah Islamic Boarding School, as a form of developing dormitories that already exist in the institution. At the Al- Mawarid Featured Dormitory there are excellent programs and hostel facilities that are representative and only accommodate students who focus on memorizing the Quran. This field research is using qualitative as the approach. The techniques used to gather the data are through interviews, observations and documentations. The purpose of this study was to find the implementation of institutional development in the Al-Mawarid Excellence Dormitory at Tahfidzul Qur'an Islamic Boarding School Nurul Falah Poncol Magetan. Weaknesses and advantages of implementing institutional development in the Al-Mawarid Excellent Dormitory and the Implications of institutional development in the Al-Mawarid Excellent Dormitory for the recitation of the students. The findings obtained from this study are that in implementing institutional development at the Al-Mawarid Excellent Dormitory, the management function of POAC (Planning, Organizing, Actuating, Controlling) or planning (objectives, teaching staff and costs) is organizing (halaqoh distribution according to students' memorization, extracurricular according to the talents and interests of the students) implementation (formal, non-formal and extracurricular learning) evaluation (quarterly meetings between administrators and the boardss and tests for increasing students' memorization ratings). The management of institutional development in the Al- Mawarid Featured hostel lacks social community and the advantages are 24-hour mentoring assistance and representative and complete dormitories. The implications of institutional development at the AlMawarid Featured Dormitory are the achievement of memorization of at least 5 juz 1 year, student achievements in academic and non-academic as well as competitions at the district level and costs that are more expensive at this excellent Dormitory because of the facilities and programs implemented.

Management Challenges of Students’ Accommodation in Private University in Oyo Town

The provision of student’s hostel is a crucial supplement to education of higher learning, as this is expected to enhance students’ well-being and overall performance. Using a cross-sectional design survey, the study assessed the management of the students’ hostel in Ajayi Crowther University, Oyo, a private institution. Through interviews, focused group discussion and questionnaire administration, the study evaluated those responsible for the management of student’s hostel, it examined the management strategies deployed, the challenges in the management, as well as analysed the level of student’s satisfaction with the management strategies employed. The study adopted descriptive statistical approach in the analysis of the data collected. Findings in this study shows that emergency management approach (EMA) to management issues was adopted as against the predictive, corrective and preventive maintenance and management strategy. It was shows that both the Hostel supervisors and the students were strongly dissatisfied with the management strategy adopted in the management of the hostels. The challenges encountered was the bureaucratic process of obtaining permission from the Hostel providers before repairs were carried out on the facilities. The lack of the proper allocation of responsibilities between the service providers and the university management as to who should handle what, posed a great challenge in the management of the student’s facilities and of course non-remittance of funds to the hostel providers. The gradual dilapidating state of some of the hostel facilities led to some antisocial behaviours of some students within and around the hostels. Other notable challenges that affected the management strategy of these student's hostel accommodation were dual ownership and lack of proper and detailed working memorandum of understanding. Others were lack of effective supervisors’ complaint system about deficiencies in the facilities and delay in response to repairs, even emergencies. The paper recommends a total overhauling of the facilities as well as outsourcing the management of such property to Estate Surveyors and Valuers who were competent, skilful and trained in the art and science of real estate management, to avert a total collapse and retain the integrity of the properties. A standard hostel facility with good management strategy put in place, will attract more patronage and enhance academic performance.

Determinants of Residents Satisfaction from Hostel Facilities

Residents satisfaction of students depends on quality residential facilities, quiet study environment and positive roommate relationships. For this purpose, the present study aims to analyze determinants of residents satisfaction with hostel facilities by using a convenience sampling to collect 500 residents of public and private hostels from a metropolitan city of Pakistan i.e. Faisalabad. The logistic regression model was employed to estimate the impact of hostel facilities on resident satisfaction. The Results infer that different facilities; mess, kitchen, washroom, electricity, water supply, cleanliness, staff, security, accommodation, and bedroom, have a significant impact on the residents satisfaction. However, a non-significant level of certain variables exposed that these variables are not playing an important role in the resident's satisfaction, so the hostel administration does not need to spend money and time to provide these facilities for hostel residents. The present study results implied that the management should focus on those factors where the residents are assigning positive values to increase resident satisfaction. It will have a significant impact on the revenue streams of the hostel business.

Student Satisfaction with Hostel Facilities: A Case Study of Njala University, Njala Campus, Sierra Leone

Aim and Scope: The importance of students' social environments intheir day-to-day lives cannot be overstated. The extent to which students arehappy in their hostel depends on its facilities' availability, adequacy, andfunctionality. A case study of Njala University, Njala campus, was used todetermine the amenities provided and the level of satisfaction the students derived from those amenities. Methods: A cross-sectional research designwas used to conduct the research through a close-ended questionnaire. Thestudy's sample size was 482 students. SPSS version 26.0 was used for the dataanalysis. Result: Most (82.0%) of the respondents were within the age group20-29 years, and more than two-thirds (70.7%) were living in overcrowdedrooms with double the number than the room was designed for.; this isattributed to the common phenomenon of students who get a place sub-lettingto their less fortunate colleagues on a cost-sharing basis. Overcrowding hasimplications of increasing pressure on the available facilities. Students werereasonably satisfied with hostel facilities such as recreational grounds, securitystatus, Library/ICT, waste management, and electricity, but very dissatisfiedwith the drainage system, state of mattresses, toilet facilities, water supply,kitchen, room size, laundry, and lack of firefighting devices. Conclusion :Students are dissatisfied with current facilities as enrollment continues to risefaster than Government intervention the paper suggests that a public-privatepartnership be established to fund the construction of other hostels withupdated designs and amenities.

The study's sample size was estimated at 482 total students. SPSS version 26.0 was used for the data analysis. Result: The study revealed that 82.0% of the respondents were within the age group 20-29 years, and more than two-thirds (70.7%) of the respondents were living in overcrowded rooms with a population of more than the required number of persons per room; this is attributed to the squatting phenomenon among the hostel occupants with the attendant implications of increasing pressure on the available facilities. Equally, students were reasonably satisfied with hostel facilities such as recreational grounds, security status, Library/ICT, waste management and electricity. Results showed respondents were unhappy with the adequacy and performance of certain facilities such as the drainage system, foam, toilet, water supply, kitchen, room size, laundry, and firefighting device. Conclusion: For student convenience, as enrollment continues to rise, the paper suggests that public-private partnerships be established to fund the construction of other hostels with updated designs and amenities.

Assessing Students’ Satisfaction with Hostel Facilities in Tertiary Institutions: The Case of Selected Universities in South West Nigeria.

The importance of a conducive environment in a student’s life cannot be exaggerated as it impacts their educational performance. This research study examined the adequacy of the facilities provided in the students’ hostels and also investigates the level of satisfaction of the students with the available hostel facilities at universities in the southwest, Nigeria. A total number of 381copies of questionnaire were distributed among the students living in hostels across selected insitutions, taken as the sample size for the study; all were correctly filled and useful for the research. A random sampling method was employed in selecting the above-sampled respondents. The data collected were then analyzed using descriptive statistics such as the frequency table, weighted mean score, and relative important index. The result showed that the sampled students were averagely satisfied with the hostel facilities. The result according to the research also showed that not all the necessary facilities stated by other researchers were available in the hostel for the students. The research result sites the need for a realistic and active approach towards making available adequate and applicable facilities in the students’ hostel to meet up with the average standard as obtained in global university environments, as these steps will always enhance the image of the institution and portray the institution as the top choice to anticipated students’. Influence of University Service Quality on Student Satisfaction and Loyalty in Bangladesh

Evaluating the service quality of higher educational institutions in Bangladesh has become crucial to ensure continuous improvement and strategy development for tertiary education sector. The present study has aimed to investigate the influence of higher education service quality dimensions on student satisfaction and student loyalty. Moreover, the study also tests the mediating impact of university reputation and external prestige between university service quality and satisfaction and loyalty. The research work has shown the performance of selected public universities in higher education service quality dimensions. Data has been collected through a structured questionnaire from a sample of 390 graduate and undergraduate students of two public universities of Bangladesh. The study reflects that the performance on service quality dimensions of selected public universities is not satisfactory. The results of the study have shown that Teaching, Support services, Library and lab facilities and internationalization have significant influence on student satisfaction except Administrative service and Hostel facilities. Teaching, Administrative services, Library and lab facilities and Internationalization have significant influence on student Loyalty. The mediating analysis has shown that student satisfaction partially mediates between service quality and student loyalty. The results of the study have also indicated that university reputation and external prestige partially mediate between service quality and student satisfaction and loyalty. The previous studies which measure service quality of Bangladeshi higher educational institutions have applied SERVQUAL model which is not absolutely suitable for an educational institution. However, this study has applied higher education service quality model which has been uniquely developed to measure service quality of higher educational institutions.

STUDENTS’ PERCEPTION WITH HOSTEL FACILITIES AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITION IN FEDERAL COLLEGE OF FORESTRY, JOS

Students’ housing is a major form of accommodation with requisite facilities that will enhanceacademic performance for college students who are in a transitory stage of life. This researchpaper aimed to investigate students’ perception of hostel facilities and environmental conditionsat Federal College of Forestry, Jos. The study adopted a survey research design. The studyutilized structured questionnaires and observation techniques to obtain primary data fromstudents. Simple random sampling was used to select five hostels in the study area. A total of185 questionnaires were distributed, and 172 were retrieved representing 92.97%, used for finalanalysis. Tables, percentages and photographs were used to present the results of the research.The study revealed that there is dissatisfaction with some hostel facilities, while facilities such aselectricity supply, students’ common room has a positive perception of the students. However,dirty and unkempt environment as well as poor landscaping is adjudged factors that contribute tounhealthy environment of the hostels. The study therefore recommends the need for the schoolmanagement to pay close attention to the provision of new hostel designs with more facilitiesand improvement of the hostel’s environment through appropriate landscaping.Keywords: Students, Perception, Hostel, Facilities, Environment, Forestry, Jos

Assessing the overall relative satisfaction index of students towards college facilities: a cross-sectional study

Background: A sound social environment is a key determinant to a students’ welfare and improved academic performance.Methods: An online cross-sectional study was undertaken among 172 medical students residing in the hostel facility of a medical college in urban Mysuru. A pre-tested RSI questionnaire was administered to the students to assess their overall satisfaction with the hostel facilities and the campus.Results: Out of the 172 study participants who filled the questionnaire, the majority of them were females (56.98%). 70 (40.69%) students belonged to the second year, 31 (18.04%) were from the first year while 24 (13.95%) participants were in internships.Conclusions: The study showed that students had moderate satisfaction with the hostel facilities and the campus. However, both the boys and girls were dissatisfied with the hostel canteen’s hygiene and facility.

Evaluation of the effect of preconception due to past experience on the perception of building performance of an Indian hostel

A preconceived notion due to past experience could influence the user perception of building facilities during the evaluation of the service gap and influence facility managers’ decisions. This paper has evaluated the effect of past experience on the perception of hostel facilities is the first of its kind. This paper tries to investigate the influence of past experience on user perception on facilities such as Visual, Thermal, Aural, Fire safety, Hygiene, and Communication. Over 234 respondents participated in the perception survey. The study computed the service gap using the SERVQUAL model, and the influence of past experience was investigated in expectation, satisfaction and service gap using the Mann–Whitney U test. The users without experience and females have shown higher expectation ratings and lower satisfaction ratings, increasing the performance gap. The past experience did not influence both the service gap and satisfaction. Past experience has shown a medium effect on Thermal and Visual aspects and a small effect on Communication. Therefore, checking the influence of past experience is not recommended during building performance evaluation. Even though, while evaluating the Thermal performance alone, the influence of past experience may be evaluated due to its dynamic nature and high energy consumption rate. Cubic regression models were used to explain the proportion of users against change in performance gap under the aspects. That can be used to benchmark similar projects.

Postoccupancy Evaluation for Student Housing with a Focus on Maintenance Planning, Design Process, and Client Requirement

The improvement of facility maintenance and operation practices for constructed buildings is a major concern for all facility management (FM) firms worldwide. The owner, planner, and developer of housing projects, especially projects that are repeated, are eager to enhance the quality of the coming projects based on satisfaction of the current facility occupants. Little research has been conducted to link occupants’ requirements and satisfaction with FM practices or with the design of future facilities. The main purpose of this research was to determine students’ satisfaction with and obtain their qualitative feedback regarding a hostel facility to determine whether the constructed facility is providing the performance needed by users of the facility. The research also evaluated the housing facility from the occupants’ perspective and correlated this with the current maintenance practices to improve the maintenance planning and the overall performance of the facility. A survey covering 56 different performance attributes was conducted using a questionnaire distributed to the students. The overall level of satisfaction with the studied attributes indicated that the students generally were satisfied with the housing facility. This study will enable the maintenance administration and the university management to identify areas of students’ dissatisfaction with housing facility, which will help to improve the performance and the overall satisfaction. Thus, the results and findings from this study will keep the quality of future constructed students housing up to the desired standards and level of service. The study contributes to the body of knowledge on improving student accommodation in higher education and provides valuable insight to the facility management.

Maintenance Feedback Mechanisms and Limiting Factors of Post-Occupancy Evaluation in Student Residents of Higher Education Institutions in Nigeria

A hostel facility’s effective functioning and performance contribute significantly to advancing knowledge and technologies for a sustainable future. Therefore, post-occupancy evaluation (POE) offers the basis for promoting construction projects’ future design and construction quality. The present study thereby examines the maintenance feedback mechanisms and limiting factors of POE to address future occupants’ satisfaction in selected hostels in Nigerian universities. A quantitative research design method was adopted where 340 questionnaire instruments were administered to the student occupants and facilities managers. The data obtained were subjected to descriptive statistics using a mean score, relative importance index and ranking. The research findings revealed that the maintenance feedback mechanisms utilised both by the student and facilities manager respondents have direct communication channels with the relevant stakeholders. The limiting factors of POE analysed showed that non-availability of information on building facilities, the persistence of maintenance challenges in building, lack of commitment from school management and insignificant improvement on the maintenance challenges were severe factors to be tackled in the studied hostels. Therefore, it is recommended that Nigerian universities’ regulating bodies conduct a building performance evaluation of existing hostel facilities in Nigerian universities and update the procedures guide and physical development manual for Nigeria’s university system.
