Psychometric properties and criterion related validity of the Norwegian version of hospital survey on patient safety culture 2.0

BackgroundSeveral studies have been conducted with the 1.0 version of the Hospital Survey on Patient Safety Culture (HSOPSC) in Norway and globally. The 2.0 version has not been translated and tested in Norwegian hospital settings. This study aims to 1) assess the psychometrics of the Norwegian version (N-HSOPSC 2.0), and 2) assess the criterion validity of the N-HSOPSC 2.0, adding two more outcomes, namely ‘pleasure of work’ and ‘turnover intention’.MethodsThe HSOPSC 2.0 was translated using a sequential translation process. A convenience sample was used, inviting hospital staff from two hospitals (N = 1002) to participate in a cross-sectional questionnaire study. Data were analyzed using Mplus. The construct validity was tested with confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). Convergent validity was tested using Average Variance Explained (AVE), and internal consistency was tested with composite reliability (CR) and Cronbach’s alpha. Criterion related validity was tested with multiple linear regression.ResultsThe overall statistical results using the N-HSOPSC 2.0 indicate that the model fit based on CFA was acceptable. Five of the N-HSOPSC 2.0 dimensions had AVE scores below the 0.5 criterium. The CR criterium was meet on all dimensions except Teamwork (0.61). However, Teamwork was one of the most important and significant predictors of the outcomes. Regression models explained most variance related to patient safety rating (adjusted R2 = 0.38), followed by ‘turnover intention’ (adjusted R2 = 0.22), ‘pleasure at work’ (adjusted R2 = 0.14), and lastly, ‘number of reported events’ (adjusted R2=0.06).ConclusionThe N-HSOPSC 2.0 had acceptable construct validity and internal consistency when translated to Norwegian and tested among Norwegian staff in two hospitals. Hence, the instrument is appropriate for use in Norwegian hospital settings. The ten dimensions predicted most variance related to ‘overall patient safety’, and less related to ‘number of reported events’. In addition, the safety culture dimensions predicted ‘pleasure at work’ and ‘turnover intention’, which is not part of the original instrument.

Enhancing patient safety culture and examining adverse events in intensive care units: a comparative analysis

Background and Purpose: The global emphasis on fostering a patient safety culture is a priority for many countries, including those in the Middle East. Hospitals worldwide are dedicated to enhancing the quality of patient care and safety, with an increasing recognition by hospital management of the role played by a robust patient safety culture. This study compares intensive care nurses' perceptions of patient safety culture and adverse events. Method: A comparative study was conducted in the intensive care units (ICUs) of four private and teaching hospitals utilizing The Hospital Survey on Patient Safety Culture (HSOPSC)-two in Riyadh and two in Cairo. Nonprobability sampling was employed across all registered nurses working in ICUs. Results: The study revealed that the highest percentage of errors occurred in patients' acquired infections (61.5%), while the lowest percentage was associated with patients' falls (7.8%). The strengths of the composites were continuous organizational learning improvement (85.9%) and management support for patient safety (81.4%). Areas for improvement were identified in composites such as handoffs and transitions (40.3%) and teamwork across units (49.5%). Notably, nurses in Cairo hospitals reported a higher frequency of adverse events compared to their counterparts in Riyadh hospitals. Implications for practice: The views of nurses working in both cities emphasized the importance of organizational learning to achieve ongoing improvement, teamwork within specific units, and managerial backing for ensuring patient safety. Moreover, the research emphasized the necessity for additional improvements in collaboration between different units, as well as in the processes of handoffs and transitions.

Assessment of Patient Safety Culture Among Nurses Working at Tertiary Care Hospitals in Aljouf Region, Saudi Arabia.

Patient safety is a fundamental element in healthcare quality and a major challenge in achieving universal health coverage, especially in low- and middle-income countries. The first step to improve patient safety is to evaluate the safety culture in hospitals. This study aimed to investigate the patient safety culture among nurses and determine the factors affecting it. This cross-sectional study was conducted among 423 nurses working at tertiary care hospitals in the Al-Jouf region in Saudi Arabia. The highest score for patient safety among nurses was for teamwork within units (16.41 ± 2.44). The lowest score was for nonpunitive response to errors (5.87 ± 1.92). In addition, 83% of the participants did not report any events in the past 12 months. More perception of patient safety was significantly higher among females than males in dimensions of teamwork within units, frequency of events reported, and staffing. Furthermore, teamwork within units, management support for patient safety, staffing, non-punitive response to errors, and handoffs and transitions were significantly higher among participants in direct contact with patients. The Hospital Survey on Patient Safety Culture (HSOPSC) scale is significantly higher among non-Saudi nurses, nurses with bachelor's education, nurses with less working hours per week, and those who had training on patient safety. The current study showed that the majority of the participants did not report any events in the past 12 months. The highest score for patient safety culture dimensions among nurses was for teamwork within units while the lowest score was for nonpunitive response to errors.

ANALISIS BUDAYA KESELAMATAN PASIEN DI RSU PKU MUHAMMADIYAH, BANTUL

Background: Patient safety culture in PKU Muhammadiyah Hospital of Bantul based on Putri (2010) in the category of enough. Though PKU Muhammadiyah Hospital of Bantul is a Class C has an obligation to implement the Patient Safety throughout the service area.
 Method: This study used a mixed methods research approach is a quantitative method using cross sectional and qualitative methods with case study approach with a descriptive research design. Research subjects are nurses who deal directly with patients. A total of 61 people. Measurement of patient safety culture using a questionnaire from the AHRQ (Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality) in 2004 entitled HSOPSC (Hospital Survey on Patient Safety Culture). The questionnaire consisted of 12 questions dimensions with 42 items and is equipped with the interview data and report patient safety incidents from Patient Safety Team PKU Muhammadiyah Hospital, Bantul.
 Results and Discussion: Patient Safety Culture at PKU Muhammadiyah Hospital of Bantul in the category of enough with a mean and median of 73.9. Still found gaps between the patient safety incident reporting patient safety teams and real in the field. As well as barriers to implementation of patient safety in PKU Muhammadiyah Hospital of Bantul is still not optimal support came from management, not optimal team performance because the work load and the persistence of blaming culture in the unit.

Impact of Covid-19 on patient safety culture in hospital wards: A comparative study

BackgroundThe current coronavirus pandemic has profoundly impacted healthcare services across all dimensions. Patient safety culture stands as a pivotal element in enhancing safety and the quality of patient care. This study aimed to compare the patient safety culture in the COVID-19 ward with that in other inpatient wards. MethodsIn this cross-sectional study, 418 nurses were selected through a quota sampling method from an educational hospital in Western Iran. For data collection, the Hospital Survey on Patient Safety Culture (HSOPSC), developed by AHRQ, was utilized. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, including mean and standard deviation (SD), as well as analytical statistics such as independent-samples t-test, Mann-Whitney test, Spearman's correlation test, and Kruskal-Wallis test. SPSS 25 was used for analysis, and the significance level was set at p ≤ 0.05. ResultsThere was no statistically significant difference between the two groups (p > 0.05), but there were variations in the mean scores within different dimensions. The overall mean score of patient safety culture in the coronavirus ward was 117 ± 20.91, indicating a moderate to low level of patient safety culture in this group. In contrast, in other inpatient wards, the mean score was 122.66 ± 23.47. ConclusionIn the coronavirus department, due to the heightened patient severity and increased nursing workload, the patient safety culture was rated as weak. Therefore, it demands specific attention from management to provide additional training for healthcare staff, aiming to enhance their performance in coping with stressful and unpredictable conditions.

Objective: To measure patient safety culture and some factors influence in 12 areas relating to patient care in Pham Ngoc Thach Hospital. Methods: Cross-sectional research. The Hospital Survey on Patient Safety Culture (HSOPSC) questionnaire of the Agency of Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) version Vietnamese was used in this survey. All medical staff working in the Pham Ngoc Thach Hospital were asked to complete the questionnaire. We employed the software Stata 16.0 and Microsoft Excel 2010 to perform the statistical analysis of the survey data. Average positive response rate in 12 patient safety culture dimensions in Pham Ngoc Thach Hospital was 75%, higher than in Taiwan (64%). Worthy of note were the high positive response rates observed in the following areas: Teamwork within units (94%), manager views and actions promoting patient safety (91%), management support for patient safety, learning-continuous improvement (89%), and feedback and communication about errors (85,6%). However, there were three areas that still received many negative responses and showed room for improvement such as handoff, transitions, staffing, and non-punitive response to errors. The survey in Pham Ngoc Thach Hospital which provides an overview of the patient safety culture in the hospital. Although most medical staff had positive responses regarding patient safety in many areas relating to patient care within their departments as well as in the whole hospital, but there were still areas that had a low positive response and needed to be improved.

Work Climate, Improved Communication, and Cohesive Work Linked with Patient Safety Culture: Findings from a Sports Medicine Hospital.

This study aims to investigate the patient safety culture at a sports medicine hospital and explore the quality of healthcare and associated factors. In a cross-sectional study design, the Hospital Survey on Patient Safety Culture (HSOPC) tool was administered online among staff at a sports medicine hospital in Doha, Qatar. Out of 898 staff who received an email invitation, 504 participated (56.1%). The results showed that 48.0% of the staff rated the patient safety grade as excellent and 37.5% as very good, totaling 85.5%. Factors associated with excellent or very good patient safety grades were management support OR 4.7 95% CI (1.8 to 12.3); team communication OR 3.0 95% CI (1.4 to 6.3), supervisor action supporting patient safety OR 3.5 95% CI (1.7 to 7.0) and other items related to work area such as working together: OR 3.0 95% CI (1.2 to 7.6), helping out busy areas OR 2.5 95% CI (1.1 to 5.5) and having good procedures and systems: OR 2.8 95% CI (1.4 to 5.8). Addressing management support, enhancing communication, and cohesive work within the work area facilitates a culture of trust that improves patient safety grades.

Perceptions of Patient Safety Culture among Healthcare Professionals in Public Hospitals in Kaduna State, Nigeria: A Cross-Sectional Survey

Background: Establishing a culture of patient safety in the healthcare system is essential to making improvements in the quality of care and patient outcomes. Aim: To assess the perceptions of patient safety culture among healthcare professionals (HCPs) in selected public hospitals in Kaduna state, Nigeria.
 Methods: A cross-sectional survey using the Hospital Survey on Patient Safety Culture (HSOPSC) was conducted. Data was collected from healthcare professionals (medical doctors, nurses, and pharmacists) from four (4) public hospitals that met the inclusion criteria. Data were analysed using SPSS version 23 and summarized as percentages, means, and standard deviations. The chi-square test was used to examine statistical associations between HCP characteristics and outcome variables.
 Results: Three hundred and fifty-eight (358) questionnaires were completed and returned (response rate of 84.8%). The overall average of the percent positive response of patient safety culture across the health facilities was 55.6%. 'Teamwork within units' was the dimension with the greatest strength (81.3%). The dimensions with the most potential for improvement with average positive responses below 50% were 'Staffing' (34.4%), 'Frequency of events reported' (36.8%), and 'Non-punitive response to errors' (40.5%). A higher percentage of pharmacists (n=25, 48.1%) compared to other HCPs had reported at least an error in the preceding 12 months, and this was statistically significant (p < .001).
 Conclusion: Overall perception of patient safety culture was slightly above average (55.6%) with four out of twelve dimensions measured having an average score below 50%. Further assessment of patient safety culture, particularly in the areas with poor responses is required to improve the quality of care and promote healthcare improvement.

GAMBARAN BUDAYA KESELAMATAN PASIEN PADA PERAWAT DI RUMAH SAKIT X. BEKASI TAHUN 2022

The implementation of a culture of patient safety is crucial in hospitals so that patients do not experience unwanted or unexpected hazards during hospitalization. Hospital X. Bekasi has a quality unit, but incident reporting at Hospital X. Bekasi is not going well. This illustrates the implementation of a patient safety culture that is not running well. This study aims to look at the culture of patient safety among nurses in RSX. The year 2022 is seen in the 12 dimensions of the culture of patient safety, according to the Association for Health Care and Research Quality (AHRQ). This research uses a cross-sectional design. The population in this study is the nurse who directly serves the patient. A large sample in this study of 90 nurses was taken with total sampling techniques. The instrument used in this study is the Hospital Survey on Patient Safety Culture (HSOPSC), which has 12 dimensions. The results showed average positive responses from 12 dimensions of patient safety culture (62.5%), Higher Expectations and Action in Promoting Patient Safety (53.3%), Learning for Organizational Continuous Improvement (64.8%), Unit Collaboration (57.5%), Open Communication (61.1), Feedback and Communication on Errors (63.2%), Non-Positive Response (79.6%), Staffing (69.4%), Management Support Dimension for Patient Security (92.2%), Inter-Units Cooperation (64.4%), Overall Perception of Patients Safety (50.2%), Incident Reporting Frequency (50.7%) and Incident Reports Frequencies (50.7%). Hospital X. Bekasi is expected to continue and maintain patient safety programs, evaluate the number of existing staff, improve incident reporting motivation, and conduct comprehensive and periodic patient safety culture measurements.

Perceived patient safety culture and its associated factors among clinical managers of tertiary hospitals: a cross-sectional survey

BackgroundPatient safety is a global challenge influenced by perceived patient safety culture. However, limited knowledge exists regarding the patient safety culture perceived by hospital clinical managers and its associated factors. This study aims to investigate the perceptions of patient safety culture and associated factors among clinical managers of tertiary hospitals in China.MethodsA cross-sectional survey was conducted from June 19 to July 16, 2021, involving 539 clinical managers from four tertiary hospitals in Changsha City of Hunan Province. The Hospital Survey on Patient Safety Culture (HSOPSC) was utilized to assess perceived patient safety culture. Bivariate, multivariable linear regression, and logistic regression analyses were performed.ResultsThe mean score for the total HSOPSC was 72.5 ± 7.6, with dimensional scores ranging from 62.1 (14.9) to 86.6 (11.7). Three dimensions exhibited positive response rates (PRRs) < 50%, indicating areas that need to be improved: “nonpunitive response to errors” (40.5%), “staffing” (41.9%), and “frequency of events reported” (47.4%). Specialized hospitals (β = 1.744, P = 0.037), female gender (β = 2.496, P = 0.003), higher professional title (β = 1.413, P = 0.049), a higher education level (β = 1.316, P = 0.001), and shorter time delays per shift (β=-1.13, P < 0.001) were correlated with higher perceived patient safety culture. Education level, work department, “teamwork within a unit”, “management support for patient safety”, “communication openness”, and “staffing” dimensions were associated with patient safety grades (all P < 0.05). Years worked in hospitals, occupation, education level, work department, hospital nature, professional title, “communication openness”, and “handoffs & transitions” were associated with the number of adverse events reported (all P < 0.05).ConclusionsOur study revealed a generally low level of patient safety culture perceived by clinical managers and identified priority areas requiring urgent improvement. The associated factors of patient safety culture provide important guidance for the development of targeted interventions in the future. Promoting patient safety by optimizing the patient safety culture perceived by clinical managers should be prioritized.

Patient safety culture in home care settings in Sweden: a cross-sectional survey among home care professionals

BackgroundThe connection between a weak patient safety culture and adverse patient events is well known, but although most long-term care is provided outside of hospitals, the focus of patient safety culture is most commonly on inpatient care. In Sweden, more than a third of people who receive care at home have been affected by adverse events, with the majority judged to be preventable. The aim of this study was to investigate the patient safety culture among care professionals working in care at home with older people.MethodsThis cross-sectional study used a purposive sample of 66 municipal care workers, health care professionals, and rehabilitation staff from five municipal care units in two districts in western Sweden who provided care at home for older people and had been employed for at least six months. The participants completed the Hospital Survey on Patient Safety Culture (HSOPSC) self-report questionnaire, which assessed aspects of patient safety culture—norms, beliefs, and attitudes. Logistic regression analysis was used to test how the global ratings of Patient safety grade in the care units and Reporting of patient safety events were related to the dimensions of safety culture according to the staff’s professions and years of work experience.ResultsThe most positively rated safety culture dimension was Teamwork within care units (82%), which indicates good cooperation with the closest co-workers. The least positively rated dimensions were Handoffs and transitions among care units (37%) and Management support (37%), which indicate weaknesses in the exchange of patient information across care units and limited support from top-level managers. The global rating of Patient safety grade was associated with Communication openness and Management support (p < 0.01 and p = 0.03, respectively). Staff with less work experience evaluated the Patient safety grade higher than those with more work experience.ConclusionsThis study suggests that improvements are needed in care transitions and in support from top-level managers and that awareness of patient safety should be improved in staff with less work experience. The results also highlight that an open communication climate within the care unit is important for patient safety.

The Relationship between Moral Intelligence and Patient Safety Culture in Nurses.

Ethical issues are among the first concerns and important issues in the daily care of nurses, so that nurses always try to maintain and observe them in order to provide better and more basic care to patients. Moral intelligence (MI) can provide a framework for the proper functioning of nurses. The main purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between patient safety culture and the MI of nurses working in hospitals in Iran, Guilan province. In the present study which was descriptive and correlational research, the sample was 400 nurses from Iran. Data were collected by a standardized and modified questionnaire "Hospital Survey on Patient Safety Culture (HSOPSC)", and "Lennick & Kiel's Moral Intelligence Scale". The collected data were analyzed by Spearman correlation and Friedman test via SPSS software version 13. The findings of the study showed that the relationship between the patient safety culture and MI, was significant, and the total MI score (P<0.0001 and r=0.30). There is a positive correlation between MI of nurses and patient safety culture. Therefore, planning to increase the MI of nurses can lead to improve patients' safety culture.

Patient Safety Culture, Infection Prevention, and Patient Safety in the Operating Room: Health Workers' Perspective.

A hospital's patient safety culture affects surgical outcomes. Operating room safety culture has been overlooked despite the importance of patient safety. The AHRQ's Hospital Survey on Patient Safety Culture (HSOPSC) has been used worldwide to assess and enhance patient safety culture. This study examined how patient safety culture and infection prevention effect patient safety in the Operating Room (OR). This observational study used an online survey and included 143 OR workers. Descriptive statistics and multilinear regression were used to examine how patient safety culture and infection prevention affects level of patient safety. Most responders worked in excellent-accredited general hospitals. Most responders were male, aged between 26 to 40 years old, and had bachelor's degrees. Most were hospital-experienced nurses. Less than half had worked in units for over ten years. Organizational Learning - Continuous Improvement; Teamwork and Handoffs; and Information Exchange had the most positive responses in the OR. However, Staffing, Work Pace, and Patient Safety ranked lowest. Organizational Learning - Continuous Improvement and Hospital Management Support for Infection Prevention Efforts were found to affect OR patient safety level perceptions. According to the findings of our study, the overall patient safety culture in the operating room remains weak which highlights the importance of continuing efforts to improve patient safety in the OR. Further study could be directed to identify organizational learning in infection prevention to enhance the patient safety in the OR.

Perception of patient safety and associated factors among health staff: A cross-sectional study in some hospitals in Vietnam

Objectives: Patient safety is a global challenge of preventing and mitigating medical errors which might harm patients during their course of treatment and care. This research aimed to assess the perception of patient safety culture and its associated factors among health staff in some hospitals in Vietnam. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in three hospitals in Vietnam with a total of 763 heath staff. This study used the Hospital Patient Safety Scale developed by the American Health and Quality Research Organization. Bivariate and multivariate regression were used to analyze the association between the overall perception of patient safety culture among health staff. Results: The overall perception of patient safety among health staff in three hospitals was on the average positive response at 39.19% with a score of 3.93. Among the 12 dimensions of patient safety culture, “Feedback and communication about errors” had the highest average positive response (92.5%) with a score of 4.25, however, “Frequent of event reported” scored the lowest percentage of positive responses (20.71%) with a score of 2.49. There are two factors of department and position being found to have significant association with overall positive responses. Staffs who worked at the subclinical department are more likely to have overall positive responses than those who worked at the administration department, with an adjusted odds ratio of 2.76 (95% CI = 1.22 – 3.86). Nurses were less likely to have overall positive responses than doctors, with an adjusted odds ratio of 0.65 (95% CI = 0.45 – 0.95). Conclusion: This study reported that “Frequent of event reported” aspects that need to be improved because they are strongly related to patient safety culture and to knowledge exchange among health staff. It has been suggested that hospitals should deliver patient safety training courses and establish a supportive learning environment to improve these challenges. Psychometric evaluation of the Persian version of the Hospital Survey on Patient Safety Culture Questionnaire (HSOPSC) in neonatal intensive care units: a methodological study

BackgroundA valid and reliable tool compatible with the culture is needed to evaluate the safety culture as one of the vital and promotional components in improving the quality of safety and health care. This study aimed to investigate the psychometric properties of the Persian version of the “Hospital Survey on Patient Safety Culture (HSOPSC)” in physicians and nurses working in Neonatal Intensive Care Units.MethodsIn this methodological research, the qualitative face, content validity, and construct validity were performed by Confirmatory Factor Analysis to the psychometric evaluation of the HSOPSC questionnaire. Based on convenience sampling and the inclusion criteria, 360 individuals completed the questionnaire. Internal consistency and stability were measured. Data analysis was performed using SPSS 21 and LISREL.ResultsIn examining the construct validity, fit indices were not appropriate for the 12-dimension model of the Persian version. According to T-value, six heterogeneous items and a dimension were omitted. The 11-dimension model with 36 items showed an appropriate fit with the data. Cronbach’s alpha was evaluated at 0.79, and the stability was 0.82 (p˂0.001).ConclusionThe Persian version of HSOPSC with 11 dimensions and 36 items has favorable validity and reliability and can be used in NICUs.

Patient safety culture and associated factors among health care providers in government and private hospitals, Bahir Dar City Northwest, Ethiopia, 2022: a comparative cross-sectional study

BackgroundPatient safety in a healthcare setting is now a major global concern. Millions of people suffer disabling injuries or death directly related to medical care errors, particularly in developing countries. Evidence about patient safety culture in Ethiopia is limited. Therefore, this study was designed to assess the level of patient safety culture and associated factors among healthcare providers in government and private healthcare providers.Methods and materialsInstitution based cross-sectional study was conducted from May to June 30, 2022. Self-administered hospital survey on Patient Safety Culture (HSOPSC) tool was used to select 448 study participants. Epi Data version 4.6 and SPSS version 26 were used for data entry and analysis. Chi-square test, Bi-variable, and multivariable logistic regressions were done to determine the association between the independent and outcome variable.ResultA total of 448 healthcare providers with a response rate of 99.6% participated. The prevalence of good patient safety culture was 50.9%( 95%CI: 46.2, 55.6%). Patient safety culture difference was observed between government and private healthcare providers (× 2 = 22.6, df = 1, p = 0.000). Type of hospitals (AOR = 0.37(95% CI:(0.21, 0.68), profession (AOR = 2.16 (95% CI:(1.02,4.62), job satisfaction (AOR = 0.19,95%CI:(0.12,0.30), participated in patient safety programs(AOR = 2.69:(95%CI:1.53,4.75), providing necessary equipment and materials (AOR = 2.05(95%CI: 1.18,3.55%), and work shift (AOR = 0.47( 95%CI: 0.25,0.93) were found significantly associated with good patient safety culture among healthcare providers.ConclusionThe prevalence of good patient safety culture was relatively low. Patient safety culture difference is observed between government and private healthcare providers. Type of hospitals (public or private), profession, job satisfaction, participation in patient safety programs, providing necessary equipment and materials, and work shifts were associated factors for patient safety culture. Therefore, it is better to design patient safety improvement strategies for both government and private healthcare providers.

PATIENT SAFETY CULTURE IN PUBLIC GENERAL HOSPITALS: LITERATURE REVIEW

Background: The global prevalence of preventable adverse events in healthcare is a significant problem, with approximately 42.7 million annual accidents resulting in 23 million DALYs lost. Safety culture plays a crucial role in mitigating or exacerbating these incidents within hospitals. Objectives: To identify the results of the assessment of patient safety culture and the characteristics associated with patient safety culture in public general hospitals in various countries. Methods: This study was conducted between April-July 2021 utilizing a literature review approach using study searches through PubMed, Scopus, ScienceDirect, Google Scholar, and Garuda databases, and it discovered 17 papers from 2011-2021 that used the Hospital Survey on Patient Safety Culture (HSOPSC) as an instrument to assess patient safety culture. Results: This study found that patient safety culture at public general hospitals remains low, and hospital staff perception of safety has to be improved. Discussions: “Teamwork in hospital units” receives the most favorable replies, while “non-punitive response to error” receives the least positive responses. The majority of the employees assessed patient safety in their work unit as “excellent/very good/acceptable” and reported no incidents in the previous year. Staff and hospital characteristics were also found to be related to patient safety culture.

Awareness of the culture of patient safety among medical staff in neurosurgery departments from Moldova

To improve outcomes for patients and prevent avoidable surgical errors, neurosurgeons must change the culture of patient safety. The purpose of the study was to explore the perception of Patient Safety Culture (PSC) and the factors influencing it among the staff in the neurosurgical departments from Republic of Moldova. Material and methods. A cross sectional study was conducted in neurosurgical departments using the Hospital Survey on Patient Safety Culture (HSOPSC). Descriptive statistics were carried out, comprised the Cronbach “α” coefficient, frequency of positive answers (PPRs), level of minimum and maximum of 95% confidential interval, F. Galton correlation coefficient, Kendall rank coefficient, Harrington scale. Results. Medical staff from neurosurgical departments from five hospitals voluntarily participated in the study n=345. Most of the respondents rated the patient’s safety grade as “excellent” and “very good”. The value of the frequency of positive responses to the dimensions of the survey varies between 37.3% (CI 95% [34.8-39.9]) (staffing) and 85.0% (CI.95% [83.1-86.9]) (teamwork within units). The dimensions with the highest score of the PPRs stand out: „teamwork within units”, „organizational learning- continuous improvement” and „supervisor/manager expectations and actions promoting patient safety”. Analyzing the effect of the influence of patient safety culture factors on the degree of patient safety appreciated by the staff, we notice that the dimensions with the greatest influence are “Feedback and Communication About Error”, “Teamwork Across Units”, “Management Support for Patient Safety”, “Handoffs and transitions”, “Communication openness”. We found significant correlations among patient safety culture composites with the degree of patient safety with differences in the strength of the correlation. Conclusions. The results reflected the positive attitude of the staff towards most composites of the patient safety culture. The study made it possible to highlight the strong and vulnerable points of the patient safety culture and the factors influencing the patient safety degree in neurosurgical departments from Moldova.

The challenges and opportunities of patient safety culture in neurosurgical departments from the Republic of Moldova

The dimensions with a satisfactory score of the PPRs were „handoffs and transitions”, „frequency of events reported”, „management support for patient safety”, „teamwork across units”, „communication openness”, „overall perceptions on patient safety”, „non-punitive response to errors” and „staffing”.&#x0D; For the first time in the Republic of Moldova, the perception of patient safety culture in neurosurgery departments was studied. The results reflect the positive attitude of the staff towards most dimensions of the patient safety culture. The study made it possible to highlight the strong and vulnerable points of the patient safety culture in neurosurgical departments from Moldova.
