Implementation of religious and cultural tourism development policies in Penyengat island

The tourism development program on Pengenyat Island, Tanjungpinang City has been running with the aim of increasing public awareness about the importance of culture and religion. The aim of this research is to analyze the policy implementation model using Meter & Horn (1975) theory. This research method uses a descriptive-qualitative approach by studying related documents and conducting interviews with relevant informants. Data analysis uses triangulation techniques which are analyzed in depth. The research results show that the tourism development program on Penyengat Island has made a positive contribution to tourism development. Model in the Implementation Process of Meter & Horn (1975) Development Policy for Tourism Development on Penyengat Island on Policy Standards and Targets requires continuous evaluation and improvement, then resources are carried out such as training and increasing insight into both human resources and natural resources. The characteristics of the Implementing Organization have the potential to increase cooperation with the government and other related parties. Next, Inter-Organizational Communication is related to institutional capacity in decisions on Development Programs so that the importance of community participation in monitoring, then the Disposition or Attitude of the Implementer and the Implementing Activities that have been carried out must pay attention to the importance of the government playing an active role by paying attention in the early stages of the plan, providing guidance and education to the community . Finally, socio-economic and political environmental conditions need to pay attention to the customs and cultural awareness of local communities that must be maintained in the policy implementation process. The conclusion of this research is that local governments need to increase public awareness about the importance of culture and religion through Tourism Development programs that are in accordance with local culture and traditions.

Horn size is linked to Sertoli cell efficiency and sperm size homogeneity during sexual development in common eland (Taurotragus oryx).

Background: In polygynous species, the development of secondary sexual characters is usually decisive for male reproductive success. However, our understanding about the links between the growth of these traits and reproductive efficiency is still elusive. Most research efforts in this topic have been also focused on adult males, although the development of some secondary sexual characters, like bovid horns, typically starts after birth, continues during the puberty and in some species, such as the common eland, slows or even stops during adulthood. In this study, we investigated the relationships between horn size and testicular function during sexual development in common elands using a comprehensive approach that considers both spermatogenic and sperm parameters. Methods: Twenty-two non-sexually mature common elands were used for the present study. Horn size, body mass, testes mass, and gonadosomatic index were assessed. Spermatogenic activity was determined by cytological and histological analyses. Sperm concentration, morphology, morphometry, and intramale variation in sperm size were evaluated on epididymal sperm samples. Cluster analysis was performed to explore the influence of age on relationships between horn size and reproductive function. Results: We found that bigger horns are associated with increased Sertoli cell efficiency and reduced intramale variation in sperm size. Both parameters were not related to one another while they have shown to be associated with enhanced sperm quality in ungulates. Moreover, horn size was positively linked to the testis mass, sperm concentration, and testicular investment in the seminiferous epithelium. Spiral length and basal circumference were the horn traits most strongly correlated with spermatogenic and sperm parameters as well as those responsible for the sexual dimorphism in this species. Cluster analysis rendered two groups: the first one including males ≤30months old, while the second one those >30months old. Horn development and reproductive function were still correlated within age groups, with the strongest relationship found between horn size and sperm size homogeneity in males >30months old. Conclusion: Taken together, our results indicate that horn size can be regarded as a good index of male reproductive potential during sexual development and provide insights into the role of secondary sexual characters in sexual selection dynamics.

Cannot outrun the past: age, nutrition, and cohort influence horn size in pronghorn

AbstractIn North America, most ungulate species exhibit life‐history traits typical of long‐lived, iteroparous species wherein young males tend to prioritize essential life functions including body growth and maintenance that constrains allocation of resources to horn, antler, and pronghorn growth. As a result, males of most ungulate species require several years of growth before reaching asymptotic body size and thereafter, peak weapon size is attained. Unique among ungulate species in North America, pronghorn possess a suite of life‐history traits resulting in a precocious (i.e., unusually early development) pace of life relative to other North American ungulates. We tested the hypothesis that the fast pace of life of pronghorn extends to precocious development of large horns, and evaluated how horn size was affected by environmental conditions during the year they were grown and the potential for cohort effects associated with environmental signatures during the year of birth. We evaluated the influence of age and the environment on horn size of pronghorn using data collected from 1,789 male pronghorn harvested from 2019 to 2022 in Wyoming, USA. Pronghorn attained 95% of their peak horn size by 3.5 years old. Climatic conditions influenced horn growth through cohort effects and year of growth pathways. Snow depth during the year of birth positively influenced horn size, whereas the effects of environmental conditions during the year of horn growth were dependent on age. For young animals, snow depth and moderate drought positively influenced horn size during the year of horn growth, but the effect was negligible for prime aged and old animals. The precocious nature of pronghorn extended to their horn growth characteristics, resulting in early attainment of a large proportion of their peak horn size. The unique ecology of pronghorn and rapid attainment of size early in life can allow for greater flexibility to balance hunter opportunity and production of large‐horned males for pronghorn as compared with other ungulates.

Effect of genetic and sex effect on genomic prediction for horn development in Nellore cattle

This study aimed to evaluate the influence of phenotypic classification of horn development, animal sex effect, and non-autosomal SNP (single nucleotide polymorphism) markers on the genetic parameters and genomic prediction ability for horn development in Nellore cattle using the single-step genomic best linear unbiased prediction method. The polled phenotype was evaluated in two (presence and absence of horns), three (scurs and polled offspring from a horned parent, and the polled and horned animals), and four (absence of horn, polled born to a parent with horn, scurs, and presence of horn) phenotypic categories. A total of 12 statistical models were evaluated. The variance components were estimated using the THRGIBBS1F90 software, and a threshold animal model was used for genomic prediction analyses with the single-step genomic BLUP (ssGBLUP) procedure. Accuracy, bias, and dispersion parameters were evaluated based on the linear regression (LR) method. The highest heritability (0.84) was obtained when the polled character was evaluated as a binary trait. The lowest heritability estimates (0.44 to 0.45) for horn development were obtained when the phenotype was classified into three categories. For the same horn development classification method, the heritability estimates were similar regardless of the genomic evaluated models and fixed effects included in the model. For models considering four and three phenotypic categories for horn development, the inclusion of the sex effect as a fixed effect within the CG did not improve the accuracy, bias, and dispersion of genomic predictions for horn development. Analyzing the trait with binary expression, the highest prediction accuracy was observed when the effect of sex was not included in the CG and without the SNPs in the sex chromosomes. These models displayed the highest dispersion, pointing out the low robustness of genomic prediction. In addition, models that use less than four categories to classify the horn development phenotype, with no discrimination between polled and homozygous polled displayed lower prediction ability. The inclusion of non-autosomal SNPs in the analyses for the models considering four phenotypic categories leads to an improvement in prediction accuracy in 5,26 %, bias, and dispersion reduction, 37 % and 4,55 %, respectively, compared with models that only considered autosomal SNPs. The selection using genomic information for the polled trait is feasible, and it is an alternative to obtaining polled Nellore animals. The binary coding of horn development is an unsuitable oversimplification of polled phenotype, and probably, the genetic background of horn development is more complex than previously proposed. The most adequate prediction model to evaluate the horn development in Nellore cattle was considering four phenotypic categories and including non-autosomal SNP in the analyses for genomic prediction purposes of naturally genetically polled animals. Genetic dehorning can be adopted on a large scale as a low-cost and non-invasive approach to increase the frequency of hornless animals using genomic information and mating strategies.

Histological characterisation of the horn bud region in 58 day old bovine fetuses.

The presence of horns in domestic ruminants, such as cattle, sheep and goats, has financial and welfare implications. The genetic interactions that lead to horn development are not known. Hornless, or polled, cattle occur naturally. The known causative DNA variants (Celtic, Friesian, Mongolian and Guarani) are in intergenic regions on bovine chromosome 1, but their functions are not known. It is thought that horns may be derived from cranial neural crest stem cells and the POLLED variants disrupt the migration or proliferation of these cells. Relaxin family peptide receptor 2 (RXFP2) is more highly expressed in developing horns in cattle compared to nearby skin and has been shown to play a role in horn development in sheep. However, the role of RXFP2 in horn formation is not understood. Histological analyses of cranial tissues from homozygous horned and polled cattle fetuses at day 58 of development was carried out to determine the differences in the structure of the horn bud region. Condensed cells were only observed in the horn bud mesenchyme of horned fetuses and could be the progenitor horn cells. The distribution of neural crest markers (SOX10 and NGFR) and RXFP2 between horned and polled tissues by immunohistochemistry was also analysed. However, SOX10 and NGFR were not detected in the condensed cells, and therefore, these cells are either not derived from the neural crest, or have differentiated and no longer express neural crest markers. SOX10 and NGFR were detected in the peripheral nerves, while RXFP2 was detected in peripheral nerves and in the horn bud epidermis. Previous research has shown that RXFP2 variants are associated with horn phenotypes in cattle an sheep. Therefore, the RXFP2 variants may affect the development of the epidermis or peripheral nerves in the horn bud.

Sheep with Partial RXFP2 Knockout Exhibit Normal Horn Phenotype but Unilateral Cryptorchidism1

Comprehending the genetic basis of economically important traits is of significant importance to enhance livestock breeding. In domestic ruminants, hornlessness is becoming a more desirable trait since horns could lead to accidental injuries to animals and producers. Recent studies have identified the relaxin family peptide receptor 2 (RXFP2) as a primary candidate gene associated with the presence and absence of horns in sheep. However, no sufficient molecular biology-based analyses were performed to validate the association and function of RXFP2 in sheep. Noticeably, previous studies in both humans and mice have provided evidence supporting the involvement of RXFP2 in testicular descent. To validate the potential function of the RXFP2 gene in sheep, we used the CRISPR/Cas9 technology to obtain RXFP2-disrupted sheep individuals. Initially, highly efficient sgRNAs, targeting RXFP2, were screening through in vitro cleavage assays and cellular assessments. Then, two RXFP2-disrupted lambs were generated by intracytoplasmic microinjection of CRISPR/Cas9-sg1 ribonucleoprotein, with an efficiency of 81.84 and 37.17%, respectively. No potential off-target events were detected. Western blot analysis showed that RXFP2 expression was significantly reduced in the pedicle skin of edited lambs (P=0.034). Intriguingly, although the partial disruption of RXFP2 did not affect the horn phenotype in sheep, it led to an obvious unilateral cryptorchidism. These results provide evidence for a hitherto ambiguous link between both horn and testicular development. In conclusion, this study represents the first successful generation of cryptorchid sheep models via the disruption of RXFP2 using CRISPR/Cas9. These findings provide new insights into the roles of RXFP2, whose partial disruption is associated with testicular descent rather than horn formation.

The anticonvulsant effect of saiga horn on febrile seizures by regulating brain serotonin content and inhibiting neuroinflammation

Ethnopharmacological relevanceSaiga antelope horn (SAH) is derived from the Saiga antelope (Saiga tatarica Linnaeus) of the bovidae family. SAH has been used for the treatment of febrile seizures (FS) in children for thousands of years in China. Due to the biological protection of Saiga antelope and its ethical reasons, the application of SAH has been widely restricted. Unfortunately, the field of artificial manufacturing of SAH is still blank at present. The mechanism of SAH in the treatment of FS is still unclear, which seriously hinders the further development of artificial antelope horns and the search for substitutes for SAH. At present, there is an urgent need to determine the mechanism of SAH in the treatment of FS, so as to provide a theoretical basis for artificial antelope horn and its substitutes. Aim of the studyTo explore the anti-FS effect of natural SAH on FS rat model and its possible mechanism, and to provide a theoretical basis for the subsequent manufacture of artificial antelope horns and the search for the best substitutes. Materials and methodsFS was induced by a warm water bath (48 ± 0.5 °C). The latency and seizure grade of FS were observed and recorded. Hematoxylin-eosin (HE) staining was used to observe the functional defect of hippocampal cells. The contents of tryptophan (TRP), serotonin (5-HT), IL-1β and TNF-a in rat brain tissue were determined by ELISA. qRT-PCR and Western blot were used to detect the expression of 5-HT synthesis related neurotransmitter receptors, catalytic enzymes and inflammatory factors in hippocampus. Immunofluorescence was used to observe the expression of TPH2 protein in the dorsal raphe nucleus of rat brain. ResultsAfter pretreating rats with SAH, the seizure grade of FS was significantly reduced and the latency was prolonged. SAH can reduce the histological damage of hippocampal tissue induced by FS in rats. Further analysis of ELISA results showed that SAH significantly increased the levels of TRP and 5-HT in the brain of FS rats, and significantly decreased the levels of IL-1β and TNF-a. The results of QPCR showed that SAH could up-regulate the expression of ER-β and TPH2 mRNA and down-regulate the expression of IL-1β and TNF-ɑ mRNA in the hippocampus of rats. In addition, WB and immunofluorescence results showed that SAH could significantly up-regulate the expression of ER-β/TPH2/5-HT pathway in the hippocampus of FS rats and the expression of TPH2 protein in the raphe nucleus, but had no significant effect on SERT protein in the hippocampus of FS rats. In addition, ER-β protein inhibitor PHTPP significantly inhibited the therapeutic effect of SAH on FS rats. ConclusionsThe present study demonstrates that SAH has a significant anticonvulsant effect on the FS rat model. The mechanism may be related to the increase of TRP content and up-regulation the expression of ER-β/TPH2/5-HT signaling pathway in the brain of FS rats, thereby increasing the content of 5-HT in the brain and reducing the content of IL-1β and TNF-a in the brain.

Identification of Critical Genes for Ovine Horn Development Based on Transcriptome during the Embryonic Period.

Horns, also known as headgear, are a unique structure of ruminants. As ruminants are globally distributed, the study of horn formation is critical not only for increasing our understanding of natural and sexual selection but also for the breeding of polled sheep breeds to facilitate modern sheep farming. Despite this, a significant number of the underlying genetic pathways in sheep horn remain unclear. In this study, to clarify the gene expression profile of horn buds and investigate the key genes in horn bud formation, RNA-sequencing (RNA-seq) technology was utilized to investigate differential gene expression in the horn buds and adjacent forehead skin of Altay sheep fetuses. There were only 68 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) identified, consisting of 58 up-regulated genes and 10 down-regulated genes. RXFP2 was differentially up-regulated in the horn buds and had the highest significance (p-value = 7.42 × 10-14). In addition, 32 DEGs were horn-related genes identified in previous studies, such as RXFP2, FOXL2, SFRP4, SFRP2, KRT1, KRT10, WNT7B, and WNT3. Further, Gene Ontology (GO) analysis showed that the DEGs were mainly enriched with regard to growth, development, and cell differentiation. Pathway analysis revealed that the Wnt signaling pathway may be responsible for horn development. Further, through combining the protein-protein interaction networks of the DEGs, it was found that the top five hub genes, namely, ACAN, SFRP2, SFRP4, WNT3, and WNT7B, were also associated with horn development. Our results suggest that only a few key genes, including RXFP2, are involved in bud formation. This study not only validates the expression of candidate genes identified at the transcriptome level in previous studies but also provides new possible marker genes for horn development, which may promote our understanding of the genetic mechanisms of horn formation.

Topologically associating domains in the POLLED region are the same for Angus- and Brahman-specific Hi-C reads from F1 hybrid fetal tissue.

Horns, a form of headgear carried by Bovidae, have ethical and economic implications for ruminant production species such as cattle and goats. Hornless (polled) individuals are preferred. In cattle, four genetic variants (Celtic, Friesian, Mongolian and Guarani) are associated with the polled phenotype, which are clustered in a 300-kb region on chromosome 1. As the variants are intergenic, the functional effect is unknown. The aim of this study was to determine if the POLLED variants affect chromatin structure or disrupt enhancers using publicly available data. Topologically associating domains (TADs) were analyzed using Angus- and Brahman-specific Hi-C reads from lung tissue of an Angus (Celtic allele) cross Brahman (horned) fetus. Predicted bovine enhancers and chromatin immunoprecipitation sequencing peaks for histone modifications associated with enhancers (H3K27ac and H3K4me1) were mapped to the POLLED region. TADs analyzed from Angus- and Brahman-specific Hi-C reads were the same, therefore, the Celtic variant does not appear to affect this level of chromatin structure. The Celtic variant is located in a different TAD from the Friesian, Mongolian, and Guarani variants. Predicted enhancers and histone modifications overlapped with the Guarani and Friesian variants but not the Celtic or Mongolian variants. This study provides insight into the mechanisms of the POLLED variants for disrupting horn development. These results should be validated using data produced from the horn bud region of horned and polled bovine fetuses.

Influence of Monensin and Diflubenzuron on the Control of Immature Horn Fly and House Fly (Diptera: Muscidae) and Chemical Composition of Cattle Feces.

Twelve Angus × Hereford crossbred heifers were used in a completely randomized design to evaluate the effects of monensin and diflubenzuron feed additives on horn fly (Haematobia irritans) (L.) and house fly (Musca domestica) (L.) immature development. Heifers were randomly assigned to one of four treatment groups; 1) monensin fed at label rate, 2) diflubenzuron fed at label rate, 3) monensin and diflubenzuron fed at label rates together, and 4) nonsupplemented control. All treatments were administered from SD 0 to 28, followed by a 16-d wash-out period for a total study duration of 45 d and assayed to assess adult fly emergence, as well as fecal pH and fecal bacterial and total protein. A treatment × day interaction (P < 0.01) was observed for adult fly emergence. Fly emergence was not affected (P ≥ 0.05) by monensin, but was reduced during the 28 d treatment period when diflubenzuron was present (P = 0.01). Fecal pH, fecal bacterial protein, and total protein were not affected by any of the treatments (P ≥ 0.13). It is concluded that diflubenzuron is effective against both horn and house fly development regardless of the presence of monensin.

The Application of 3D Imaging as an Appropriate Method of Wildlife Craniometry: Evaluation of Accuracy and Measurement Efficiency.

The suitability of CT and 3D scanners for craniometric proposes was tested using digital calipers when determining linear measurements, and a measuring cylinder was used for the accuracy of 3D printing of deer antlers obtained by the CT and 3D scanners. The resolution of digitized objects from a 3D scanner ranged from 0.008 mm to 0.122 mm. For mandibular dimensions, a positive deviation (p < 0.01) from the primary control measurement was recorded. The average antler volume measured with the cylinder was 60.47 cm3 at the first measurement, in the case of the CT scanner 61.62 cm3 and for the 3D scanner 64.76 cm3—both technologies exhibit a positive deviation from the primary measurement. Precise sensing and measurements can be used to evaluate the quality and evolution of wildlife populations, create digital museum collections, or to examine in detail certain traits such as antler and horn development or dentition.

Uncovering Novel Features of the Pc Locus in Horn Development from Gene-Edited Holstein Cattle by RNA-Sequencing Analysis.

The Polled Celtic (Pc) mutation locus is a genetically simple single mutation that is the best choice for breeding polled cattle using gene editing. However, the mechanism of the Pc locus for regulating horn development is unclear, so we used gene editing, somatic cell nuclear transfer and embryo transfer to obtain polled Holstein fetal bovine (gestation time 90 days) with a homozygous Pc insertion (gene-edited Holstein fetal bovine, EH) and the wild-type 90 days Holstein fetal bovine (WH) as controls. The hematoxylin-eosin (HE) staining results showed that, compared to the WH, the EH horn buds had no white keratinized projections or vacuolated keratinocytes and no thick nerve bundles under the dermal tissue. Furthermore, DNA sequencing results showed that the Pc locus was homozygously inserted into the fetal bovine genome. A total of 791 differentially expressed genes were identified by transcriptome sequencing analysis. Enrichment analysis and protein interaction analysis results of differentially expressed genes showed that abundant gene changes after Pc insertion were associated with the adhesion molecule regulation, actin expression, cytoskeletal deformation and keratin expression and keratinization. It was also noted that the results contained several genes that had been reported to be associated with the development of horn traits, such as RXFP2 and TWIST1. This study identified these changes for the first time and summarized them. The results suggested that the Pc mutant locus may inhibit neural crest cell EMT generation and keratin expression, leading to failures in neural crest cell migration and keratinization of the horn bud tissue, regulating the production of the polled phenotype.

Genome-wide scan for signatures of selection in the Brangus cattle genome.

Brangus is a composite cattle breed developed with the objective of combining the advantages of Angus and Zebuine breeds (Brahman, mainly) in tropical climates. The aim of this work was to estimate breed composition both genome-wide and locally, at the chromosome level, and to uncover genomic regions evidencing positive selection in the Argentinean Brangus population/nucleus. To do so, we analysed marker data from 478 animals, including Brangus, Angus and Brahman. Average breed composition was 35.0% ± 9.6% of Brahman, lower than expected according to the theoretical fractions deduced by the usual cross-breeding practice in this breed. Local ancestry analysis evidenced that breed composition varies between chromosomes, ranging from 19.6% for BTA26 to 56.1% for BTA5. Using approaches based on allelic frequencies and linkage disequilibrium, genomic regions with putative selection signatures were identified in several chromosomes (BTA1, BTA5, BTA6 and BTA14). These regions harbour genes involved in horn development, growth, lipid metabolism, reproduction and immune response. We argue that the overlapping of a chromosome segment originated in one of the parental breeds and over-represented in the sample with the location of a signature of selection constitutes evidence of a selection process that has occurred in the breed since its take off in the 1950s. In this regard, our results could contribute to the understanding of the genetic mechanisms involved in cross-bred cattle adaptation and productivity in tropical environments.

Coping with antagonistic predation risks: Predator-dependent unique responses are dominant in Ceriodaphnia cornuta.

Inducible defences of prey are evolved under diverse and variable predation risks. However, during the co-evolution of prey and multiple predators, the responses of prey to antagonistic predation risks, which may put the prey into a dilemma of responding to predators, remain unclear. Based on antagonistic predation pressure from an invertebrate (Chaoborus larvae) and a vertebrate (Rhodeus ocellatus) predator, we studied the responses of multiple traits and transcriptomes of the freshwater crustacean Ceriodaphnia cornuta under multiple predation risks. Chaoborus predation risk altered the expression of genes encoding cuticle proteins and modulated the biosynthesis of steroid hormones, cutin, suberine, and wax, leading to the development of horns and increase in size at the late developmental stage. Meanwhile, fish predation risk primarily triggered genes encoding ribosomes and those involved in unsaturated fatty acid biosynthesis and cysteine and methionine metabolism, resulting in smaller individual size and earlier reproduction. Inducible responses of both transcriptome and individual traits revealed that predator-dependent unique responses were dominant and the dilemma of antagonistic responses was relatively limited. However, the unique individual traits in response to invertebrate predation could be significantly impaired by vertebrate predation risk, even though the unique responses to different predators were extremely weakly correlated and could be elicited simultaneously. These results indicate that diverse predator-dependent unique responses are favoured by Ceriodaphnia during its co-evolution with multiple predators. Nonetheless, Ceriodaphnia is not a generalist that can fully adopt all predator-dependent unique responses simultaneously under multiple predation risks.

Comparative metabolomic analysis of polyphenic horn development in the dung beetle Onthophagus taurus.

Organisms alter their phenotypes in response to changing environmental conditions. The developmental basis of this phenomenon, phenotypic plasticity, is a topic of broad interest in many fields of biology. While insects provide a suitable model for studying the genetic basis of phenotypic plasticity, the physiological aspects of plasticity are not fully understood. Here, we report the physiological basis of polyphenism, an extreme form of phenotypic plasticity by utilizing a dung beetle species, Onthophagus taurus. We highlighted the metabolome between sexes as well as two distinct male morphs—large and small horns. Unlike results from previous transcriptomic studies, the comparative metabolomic study revealed that differences in metabolite level were more prominent between animals with different body sizes than different sexes. Our results also indicate that specific metabolites and biochemical pathways may be active during horn size determination.

ОСОБЕННОСТИ РАЗВИТИЯ ПАНТОВ ИЗЮБРА (CERVUS ELAPHUS XANTHOPYGOS MILNE-EDWARDS, 1860), ПРИМОРСКИЙ КРАЙ

Red deer (Cervus elaphus xanthopygos Milne-Edwards, 1860) is a native subspecies of the red deer, the most common representative of the fauna of coniferous-deciduous forests in the south of the Far East, which inhabits here mainly low and middle mountains. The purpose of the study is to study the features of morphology and development of velvet antlers in male deer of different ages in the population of the Chuguevsky district of Primorsky Krai. Red deer is a very promising species of ungulates for intensive hunting, so the need to study the morphological features of the growth and development of horns in red deer in Primorsky Krai is undeniable. The studies were carried out in the Chuguevsky district, 5 camera traps were used, installed on the territory of solonetzes, the age of males was determined by morphological features. In total, more than 600 photolocations of red deer were studied during April-July 2021, the material obtained made it possible to identify with great certainty the main patterns of growth and development of antlers in red deer in the study area. All recorded animals were divided into 9 age groups. There was a fixation of visits to solonetzes by individuals of each group at different times of the day and in different periods of the summer months. The article presents the results of the work on identifying the developmental features of antlers in male red deer of different ages and at different maturation periods, obtained by studying photolocations from camera traps installed on natural ones in solonetz areas. It was found that by the end of July, in most adult males, the horns had completely grown and ossified, with the exception of the upper ends, which were still velvety and quite soft.

Horn bud size of dairy-bred and suckler-bred calves at time of disbudding

BackgroundHot-iron disbudding is a common management procedure to prevent horn growth in calves. The study objective was to examine effect of age, breed and sex on horn bud size of dairy-bred and suckler-bred calves at time of disbudding.ResultsThe left and right horn bud size (diameter and height in mm) of 279 calves, including dairy-bred Holstein-Friesian (Male (M) = 88) and 191 suckler-bred (86 Charolais, CH; (M = 39, Female (F) = 47), 67 Limousin, LM; (M = 32, F = 35) and 38 Simmental, SI; (M = 22, F = 16) sired)) was measured using a digital calliper at time of disbudding. Calves were retrospectively assigned to two age categories at time of disbudding: 1), 14 to 28 days (d) old and 2), 29 to 60 d old. Holstein-Friesian M calves had a greater horn bud diameter (16.97 v.14.45 mm) and height (7.79 v. 5.00 mm) compared to suckler-bred M calves (P < 0.01), with no difference (P > 0.05) among the suckler-bred calves. Suckler-bred M calves had a greater horn bud diameter (14.46 vs 13.29 mm) and height (5.01 vs 3.88 mm) compared to suckler-bred F calves (P < 0.05).The slopes of the lines of best fit show that horn bud diameter and height increased with age (P < 0.05) for HF, SI male and CH female calves while there was no relationship with age (P > 0.05) for CH and LM male calves, or for SI and LM female calves. Linear regression of age with diameter and with height for each breed and sex showed high variability in the data as indicated by R-squared values ranging from 0.003–0.41 indicating that in the case of the diameter and the height, the weight of the fitting effect was poor.ConclusionsCalf age is not a good predictor of horn bud size and recommendations for the disbudding of calves should be based on horn bud size and not on age. The implications of these findings are that calves should be disbudded while horn development is still at the bud stage and when the bud is large enough to be easily palpable/visible, but not so large that disbudding could lead to severe tissue trauma.

The critical role of Hedgehog-responsive mesenchymal progenitors in meniscus development and injury repair.

Meniscal tears are associated with a high risk of osteoarthritis but currently have no disease-modifying therapies. Using a Gli1 reporter line, we found that Gli1+ cells contribute to the development of meniscus horns from 2 weeks of age. In adult mice, Gli1+ cells resided at the superficial layer of meniscus and expressed known mesenchymal progenitor markers. In culture, meniscal Gli1+ cells possessed high progenitor activities under the control of Hh signal. Meniscus injury at the anterior horn induced a quick expansion of Gli1-lineage cells. Normally, meniscal tissue healed slowly, leading to cartilage degeneration. Ablation of Gli1+ cells further hindered this repair process. Strikingly, intra-articular injection of Gli1+ meniscal cells or an Hh agonist right after injury accelerated the bridging of the interrupted ends and attenuated signs of osteoarthritis. Taken together, our work identified a novel progenitor population in meniscus and proposes a new treatment for repairing injured meniscus and preventing osteoarthritis.

Horn growth patterns of Nubian ibex from the Sinai, Egypt

Abstract Documenting patterns of horn growth and horn-age relationships of Nubian ibex (Capra nubiana) can contribute to a more comprehensive understanding of their natural history, horn development in ibex in general, and future conservation of the species. Our specific objectives included (1) documenting age-horn growth patterns; (2) contrasting horn growth patterns of Nubian ibex with other ibex species; and (3) determining whether horn development accurately reflects age of Nubian ibex in Sinai, Egypt. As expected, all male and female horn measurements had significant relationships with age. Horn growth in males started plateauing at ca. age 7–8, whereas female horn growth started plateauing at ca. age 4–6. The extremely arid environment of Nubian ibex in the Sinai may account for the slowing of horn growth at a younger age than seen in populations of some other ibex species. We found a significant relationship between the number of horn ridges and age, indicating that counting horn ridges provides a viable method of aging males to within ±1 y. Thus counting horn ridges may be a useful and non-invasive method to determine age or age class, which can further our understanding of age structure, the natural history, and management of Nubian ibex populations.

A novel twin conjugate matched feed for dual-beam offset reflector antennas

ABSTRACT In this article, the design and development of a novel twin conjugate matched feed horn at Ku-band is presented. This type of multimode feed cancels the undesired high cross-polar components generated because of offset reflector geometry having lower f/D and higher offset angle. Three symmetrically located axial arrays of radial posts are used in the circular waveguide for the generation of TE21 mode along with the dominant TE11 mode. The design and development of a Ku-band twin conjugate feed horns were carried out. The measured return loss of both the feed horns are better than 22 dB, and there is an excellent agreement of measured and simulated radiation pattern of the feed. The simulated cross-polar bandwidth is 5% for better than 10 dB improvement in cross-polarization for an offset parabolic reflector antenna having f/D = 0.5 and offset angle = 90°. In this work, it has been established that the conjugation operation as reported in single feed is maintained in spite of aperture sharing of the twin feed horns.
