Application of three-staged paramedian forehead flap in reconstruction and repair of full-thickness nasal defect

Objective: To evaluate the application of three-staged paramendian forehead flap technique in reconstruction of severe full-thickness nasal defect. Methods: Clinical data of 7 cases with nasal reconstruction by three-staged forehead flap technique in the First Affiliated Hospital of Xinjiang Medical University and HongKong University Shenzhen Hospital between June 2016 and October 2019 was retrospectively reviewed. All were males aged from 10 to 71 years. There were 4 cases of basal cell carcinoma of the external nose, 2 cases of traumatic nasal defects and 1 case of large rhinophyma. All the operations were performed with the paramedian forehead flap in three stages. In stage Ⅰ, full layered forehead flap was transposed to the nasal detect. Lining flaps were reconstructed with folded forehead skin (n=4), turn-over flap plus septal chondro mucosal pivotal flap (n=2), or bipedicled vestibular skin and nasal mucosa advancement flap (n=1). According to the reconstruction mode of the lining flaps, whether to implant cartilage to reconstruct the external nasal stent at stage Ⅰ was determined. At stage Ⅱ, the folded flaps were partly or completely separated from the covering flaps along the free edges of nasal alar. All the excess soft tissue including subcutaneous fat and frontalis muscle were excised, cartilage grafts were placed or sculpted to make an ideal nasal contour. The covering flaps were then returned on the recontoured, three-dimensional recipient bed. At stage Ⅲ, the pedicles were divided. Descriptive statistical method was used to analyze the data. Results: In all cases, restoration of the nasal contour was remarkably good, no flap necrosis occurred. All patients were followed up for 6 months to 2 years, and the appearance and function of the nose recovered well. All patients were satisfied with their final aesthetic results. Conclusions: Three-staged paramedian forehead flap technique ensures maximal blood supply for the lining flap and the inserted cartilage graft, and restores an ideal three-dimensional nasal contour for reconstruction of large full thickness nasal defects.

Detecting the Disease before it’s Too Late

Specific trials or examination exists in detecting deadly diseases. Various facilities are provided these days for determining many chronic diseases, like in detecting cancer, tuberculosis, keratin level (dialysis), coronary artery disease, etc. But delaying in diagnosing emergency cases which need very quick action will lead to adverse situations. The process of this early detection of disease starts with a special test and further process depends on the special test result whether it is positive or negative. The sad reality of modern technology in the medical industry is that there is very less availability of vanguard doctors, who can help patients in diagnosing their disease, which can be treated successfully as soon as possible diagnosis has been done. Therefore, Hong Kong University (HKU) scientists discovered “Biomarker” which is being rapidly used by physicians, Neuroscientists and epidemiologists in measuring the intensity of disease provided with the details of its cause and treatment. Biomarkers possess possibilities in making wishes of doctors and scientists into reality, to identify that person who is at high risk of any disease so that doctors can take protective measures in saving that life within time. Nevertheless, according to Global data “Biomarkers” are a useful instrument in examining COVID-19 vaccine and fastening the process of clinical trials, decreasing the development cost and decreasing patient security risk. They also can be utilized to find the drug which can help in treating Covid-19 patients and can also be used to determine which drugs might be able to treat COVID-19 patients.

Tongue Image Segmentation using Hybrid Multilevel Otsu Thresholding and Harmony Search Algorithm

This paper proposes the use of hybrid multilevel thresholding and harmony search algorithm (HSA) methods for segmenting the image of the tongue. The Otsu thresholding algorithm aided by the HSA optimization algorithm is used to look for optimal solution in order to produce the best threshold based on the inserted class. Parameters used there are three levels, namely minimum, medium, and maximum. The dataset used consists of the image of the Hongkong University Polytechnic Biometric research center and the acquisition image. The result shows that the best HSA parameters value is at the medium level with threshold value 5 for benchmark image with image quality of 35.50 dB, maximum level with threshold value 5 in biometric image with image quality of 36.51 dB, and maximum level with threshold value 5 on image acquisition with image quality of 38.02 dB. Furthermore, it is expected to conduct research with a threshold value of more than 5 with maximum HSA parameters so that it can be used better again in the diagnosis of the disease through the tongue.

Ex-situ Li+ doped into HKUST-1 and their application in hydrogen storage

The aim of this research is to know the influence of Li+ doping into [Cu3(BTC)2] (BTC: benzene 1,3,5-tricarboxylate) or called as Hongkong University of Technology-1 (HKUST-1) structure through ex-situ modification under the solvothermal condition and testing for hydrogen storage. The HKUST-1 structure remains stable after Li+ doping with variation 3, 5, and 10 wt.%, according to XRD analysis, however surface area of HKUST-1 changes significantly up to 1040.96 m2/g after doped with 5 wt.% of Li+ and gave impact to the hydrogen uptake. At temperature 30°C (1.4 bar), hydrogen uptake of Li+ @HKUST-1 reached up to more twice than HKUST-1 without Li+. In addition, the presence of Li+ also increases hydrogen uptake at high temperature (80°C, 1.4 bar). Hydrogen uptake enhancement after doping with Li+ could be due to Li+ supplies additional active site to bind hydrogen molecules.

Abstract B22: Integrative analysis of DNA methylation and gene expression data reveals complex regulation of gastric cancer

Abstract Gastric cancer is a heterogeneous disease where diverse genetic and epigenetic alternations can accumulate in different molecular and histological subtypes. We applied our recently developed causality test between genome-wide DNA methylation and gene expression profiles to three independent cohorts of gastric tumors (97 in Hong Kong University (HKU), 159 in University of Singapore (Singapore) and 365 samples in TCGA stomach adenocarcinoma (TCGA) ). We focused on methylation variations within CpG islands in promoter regions, where global hypermethylation was observed, and identified 37, 62, and 537 key regulators in HKU, Singapore, and TCGA dataset respectively. There were 5 common key regulators (ADHFE1, CDO1, COX7A1, FSTL1, and TCF21) whose methylation variations had high impact on mRNA level changes of large number of downstream genes in all three dataset where different cohorts were profiled using different platforms. When we compared two dataset, there were 5 common key regulators in HKU and Singapore dataset (Fisher's exact test (FET) p-value = 2.9×e-07), 27 common key regulators in HKU and TCGA dataset (FET p-value = 6.8×e-35), and 30 common key regulators in Singapore and TCGA dataset (FET p-value = 1.0×e-29). By combining these, 52 genes were identified as key regulators within at least two dataset. Several of the key regulators were known for the association between their epigenetic disruption and the disease (for example, BNIP3, CDO1, TCF21, ZSCAN18, and so on) while other genes have not implicated in the gastric cancer previously. More interestingly, the downstream genes of these key regulators were significantly overlapped and the directions of correlation with methylation levels were almost same within the three dataset. Further clustering key regulators based on their downstream genes overlaps revealed that there were two distinct groups of downstream genes commonly regulated by these key regulators and the expression of these two groups were anti-correlated. One group was enriched for cell cycle related genes and the other group was enriched for genes involved in immune responses. This result indicates that cell cycle and immune response functions were inversely regulated by methylation variations of the same set of genes. It is worth to note that methylation patterns of some key regulators were subtype dependent and the subtype specific methylation patterns were only observed in tumor samples, but not in adjacent normal tissues. Based on integrative analysis of genome-wide DNA methylation and gene expression profiles within three independent gastric cancer dataset, we identified a set of key regulators whose methylation changes might play a ‘causal' role in the transcriptional regulation associated with the gastric cancer. Further experiments are needed to validate and dissect these putative candidate genes' roles in tumorigenesis and progression of this complex and heterogeneous disease. Solvothermal and electrochemical synthetic method of HKUST-1 and its methane storage capacity

A comparison synthetic strategy of Metal-Organic Frameworks, namely, Hongkong University of Techhnology-1 {HKUST-1[Cu3(BTC)]2} (BTC = 1,3,5-benzene-tri-carboxylate) through solvothermal and electrochemical method in ethanol:water (1:1) has been conducted. The obtained material was analyzed using powder X-ray diffraction, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Thermo-Gravimetric Analysis (TGA) and Surface Area Analysis (SAA). While the voltage in the electrochemical method are varied, ranging from 12 to 15 Volt. The results show that at 15 V the texture of the material has the best degree of crystallinity and comparable with solvothermal product. This indicated from XRD data and supported by the SEM image to view the morphology. The thermal stability of the synthesized compounds is up to 320 °C. The shape of the nitrogen sorption isotherm of the compound corresponds to type I of the IUPAC adsorption isotherm classification for microporous materials with BET surface area of 629.2 and 324.3 m2/g (for solvothermal and electrochemical product respectively) and promising for gas storage application. Herein, the methane storage capacities of these compounds are also tested.

The EiC reviews his first year of serving as the Editor-in-Chief (EIC) of the IEEE/ACM Transactions on Computational Biology and Bioinformatics. In 2013, two new columns were started in the journal, one on visionary perspectives by lead authors of the field and one on bioinformatics software tools and databases. Last year, TCBB received a total of 419 submissions, and published 139 papers, including 30 best papers selected from six bioinformatics conferences. Seventeen new associate editors joined the Editorial Board of TCBB in 2013. Protecting metal-organic framework crystals from hydrolytic degradation by spray-dry encapsulating them into polystyrene microspheres.

Many metal-organic frameworks are water labile, including the iconic Hong-Kong University of Science and Technology-1 (HKUST-1). Spray-dry encapsulation of HKUST-1 crystals into polystyrene microspheres is reported here to yield composites that are resistant to water but retain most of the excellent gas sorption capacity of HKUST-1. These composites are demonstrated to exhibit superior water adsorption/desorption cycling, maintaining the level of water uptake even after three cycles.

This special issue of Footprint began life in Shanghai, with the third Annual Delft School of Design (DSD) and International Institute for Asian Studies (IIAS) workshop, which was organized in conjunction with the Architecture Department of Hong Kong University (HKU) and took place in their Shanghai Study Centre in April 2011. The seven papers presented here look at issues of public space in East-Asian cities, beginning with an overview since 1945 and thereafter concentrating on cities in China, such as Shanghai, Beijing, Hong Kong and Nanjing, as well as a realm that is not often considered public space: urban rivers. The issue also considers the city of Bangkok, where urban design is examined as a counter public sphere.

Base Capacity of Open-Ended Steel Pipe Piles in Sand

This paper presents a new method for estimating the base capacity of open-ended steel pipe piles in sand, a difficult problem involving great uncertainty in pile foundation design. The method, referred to as the Hong Kong University (HKU) method, is based on the cone penetration test (CPT), and takes into consideration the mechanisms of annulus and plug resistance mobilization. In this method the annulus resistance is properly linked to the ratio of the pile length to the diameter—a key factor reflecting the influence of pile embedment—whereas the plug resistance is related to the plug length ratio, which reflects the degree of soil plugging in a practical yet rational way. The cone tip resistance is averaged over a zone in the vicinity of the pile base by taking into account the failure mechanism of the piles in sand, the condition of pile embedment (i.e., full or partial embedment), and the effect of soil compressibility. The predictive performance of the new method is assessed against a number of well-documented field tests including two fully instrumented large-diameter offshore piles, and through comparisons with major CPT-based methods in current engineering practice. The assessment indicates that the HKU method has attractive capabilities and advantages that render it a promising option.

Does the 1995 construction ofa traditional-style temple devoted to Mao in his home province (mentioned by the author on p. 23) have some link to popular religious worship? In a proclaimed atheistic state, the meaning of the deification ofa political leader can perhaps be better comprehended through the long lens ofhistory. The reservations above should by no means dim the significance ofthis book. This is an important contribution to the study ofChinese political culture, not so much for the author's theoretical findings (ofwhich there are few), but for his intelligent and refreshing interpretation ofa potent political symbol and its manifold manifestations in a rapidly changing China. It will not come as a surprise to most Chinese, who revere him as the father oftheir country, that Sun Yat-sen is the first Chinese in this series. Among Western scholars, however , Sun is somewhat out of fashion, since Martin Wilbur and Harold Schiffrin effectively destroyed his larger-than-life image. The current trend in scholarship has moved away from Western influences on China. One prefers to stress the vitality ofindigenous Chinese urban traditions and the growing economic and social responsibilities ofthe urban elite during the final decades of the Qing dynasty . Bergère reminds us that there still is the revolution to be explained, with all© 1997 by University its fervor and the activities of students, intellectuals, and conspirators. ofHawai'iPressBasically, thisbookis a chronological story ofSun's life and deeds. Subtitles such as "the symbolic creation ofa revolutionary leader, 1984-1897," "the adoptive father ofthe Chinese Republic," and "Warlord without an army" are succinct characterizations . Each chapter is summarized, which helps the reader to recapture the main picture and arguments. At the end, there is a chronology and an elaborate bibliography that includes works in Chinese-language. The author follows Schiffrin in assigning great importance to Sun's early efforts to become accepted in the Chinese reformist movement. Li Hongzhang rejected Sun's application to become an adviser because Sun lacked social status and a Confucian education, and this made him a revolutionary. Rather than stressing Sun's shortcomings or failures as a "Frustrated Patriot" or "Reluctant Revolutionary," the author focuses on Sun's greatest quality: he was a great communicator throughout his life, with an uncanny instinct for giving voice to the aspirations ofhis time. First, he sought and obtained support wherever it could be found against the Manchus. A cosmopolitan figure representative ofthe maritime margin ofChina, he found this support mainly in his personal networks in the treaty port of Canton and in Hong Kong. He plotted and schemed, with the conviction that a popular uprising might topple the dynasty. However, he was rejected by the bureaucrats, merchants, and literati, just as he had been rejected earlier . Next, he rode the waves of anti-imperialist feeling, while continuing to press for rapid Westernization. A sweet-talker, he moved with great flexibility and ease in the circles of missionaries, secret societies, overseas students, merchant guilds, Western diplomats, and Japanese revolutionary idealists. In his varying roles, he benefited from his opportunism and charm. Bergère considers Sun to have been neither a theoretician nor an original thinker—not even a good organizer. Herbert Westren Turnbull, 1885-1961

Herbert Westren Turnbull, second son and second of the seven children of William Peveril Turnbull, H.M. Inspector of Schools at Wolverhampton and later at Sheffield, was born at Tettenhall, Wolverhampton, on 31 August 1885. His death at Grasmere on 4 May 1961 was felt as a personal loss not merely by mathematicians in Scotland, with which country he had had associations for forty years, but by a multitude of friends, mathematicians and others, in America and in many other foreign countries. Educated at Sheffield Grammar School, he went up in 1903 to Trinity College, Cambridge, with an Entrance Scholarship. In the Tripos of 1907 he was Second Wrangler, in 1908 he was in Division 1 of the First Class in Part 2, in 1909 he was a Smith’s Prizeman. These distinctions followed in the line of a remarkable family tradition; for his father, four of whose sons went to Cambridge, had likewise before him been Second Wrangler and a Smith’s Prizeman, being also later a Fellow of Trinity; an uncle had been Third Wrangler; a cousin, R. W. H. T. Hudson, was Senior Wrangler, while three lady cousins, one of whom was Dr Hilda P. Hudson, author of Cremona transformations in plane and space , gained First Class in Mathematics at Cambridge and Oxford, and yet another cousin was Tutor in Mechanical Science at Trinity Hall. It would indeed have been remarkable if Herbert Turnbull had not become a mathematician. He was a lecturer at St Catherine’s College in 1909 and at the University of Liverpool in 1910. In July 1911 he married Ella Drummond, daughter of Canon H. D. Williamson, and went with her to Hongkong, to become a lecturer at Hongkong University in 1912, Master at St Stephen’s College from 1911 to 1915, and Warden of the University Hostel from 1913 to 1915.

NEED OF REPRINTS AT HONGKONG UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF MEDICINE

To the Editor: —The Hongkong University School of Medicine has recently been reorganized with the addition of several professors called from England. These men find themselves considerably handicapped in regard to medical literature, and have asked for assistance in securing important reprints covering work in the United States.
