Juvenile Delinquency Problems in “Pumped up Kicks” Song's Lyrics

Social issues often happen in everyone’s life. Not only happened in the movies, but it also happened in our real life. Some people tell it through lyrics and make it into a song, just like the problems researchers have found in the lyrics of the ‘Pumped up Kicks’ song. This study aims to address one of the social issues, namely juvenile delinquency, in the lyrics of the “Pumped up Kicks” song. The method used to analyze the juvenile delinquency in "Pumped up Kicks" song's lyrics involves descriptive, examining the lyrics, and interpreting their symbolic meanings. Researchers use the theory from Stuart Hall, which is the constructionist representation. This study examines how the song portrays themes of youth violence and the consequences of neglect. Through the lens of cultural studies, we dissect the song's lyrics to understand their reflection of broader cultural norms, values, and anxieties. The study showed that the juvenile delinquency revealed in the song’s lyrics is a minor who is struggling with mental health issues and homicidal thoughts, school violence, and gun violence in teenagers. In conclusion, this research aims to increase knowledge and bring awareness to the issues of teenagers, something that we have been hearing more and more about in the news at the time.

A community college nursing student under treatment for depression reported to his doctor that he had homicidal ideation involving three named professors (R.W. v. Columbia Basin Coll., No. 4:18‐CV‐5089‐RMP (E.D. Wash. Oct. 4, 2019)). He stated he envisioned killing the professors “by lighting their offices on fire and by attacking them with a saw.” The student continued to attend classes despite his repeated homicidal thoughts.

Suicidal and Homicidal Thoughts as Psychotic Symptoms in an Adolescent: A Case Report.

The first episode of psychotic disorders often occurs in adolescence. Depressive symptoms are the most common symptoms in the prodromal period and the symptoms in this period are not specific to psychosis. Adolescence is a risky period in terms of suicidal behaviors. The risk of self-harm is further increased in the prodromal period and in the psychotic episode. Homicides in psychosis constitute a small part of all homicidal cases and homicidal thoughts have been associated with command hallucinations and delusions. In this article, an adolescent girl with psychosis who had intense homicidal and suicidal thoughts and self-harming behaviors will be presented, and homicidal thoughts in psychosis will be discussed. The symptoms of the case decreased with risperidone, and she started to socialize with the support of her teacher, who visited her house for lectures. The medical, legal, and social aspects of suicides and homicides in psychosis are discussed. Keywords: Adolescent, psychosis, homicidal, suicidal.

The Psychological Impact of COVID-19 Pandemics on Gujarati Adults

The status of adult’s psychology throughout the COVID-19 pandemic includes a comprehensive range of psychiatric morbidity. According to literature, emotional states like worry, anxiety, depression, decreased self-confidence, suicidal and homicidal thoughts, and criminal thoughts. This study is about the pandemic’s influence on Gujarat’s adult population (17 -45 yrs) during the pandemic period. A cross-sectional observational study was done on various adults of Gujarat using an anonymous online questionnaire Survey. The database for research was collected from a questionnaire Google form link shared on social media networking. The examination was conducted from 28th October 2020 to 5th February 2021 for the survey, including population among Gujarat adults. The samples of psychologically impacted adults (302) during the COVID-19 pandemics are in the study. In this study shows that age group 26-45 are more affected than 17-25 years of age group. Both genders suffered psychologically in COVID-19 pandemics.

Eating disorders and psychosis: a case report and review of the literature

AimsDespite evidence from case series, the comorbidity of eating disorders (ED) with psychosis is a challenging field to which little attention has been paid. There is no consistent sequence in the co-occurrence of the two conditions-eating disorders sometimes precede, and sometimes follow the onset of psychosis. In this case report, we present a 25-year-old female patient suffering from recurrent episodes of binge eating and inappropriate compensatory purging behaviours with psychotic components to discuss the co-occurrence of these conditions in the light of the literature.MethodOur patient suffered from sleep disturbances, homicidal thoughts, self-induced vomiting worsened in one year. Psychiatric examination revealed psychotic symptoms such as blunted affect, persecutory delusions, and delusions of appeal and justification. In our inpatient psychiatry clinic, she was treated with olanzapine 20 milligrams(mg) and quetiapine 500 mg per day.ResultPsychotic episodes occur in 10–15% of eating disorder patients. The prevalence of primary psychotic diseases like schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorders in eating disorder patients appears to be comparable to that in the general population. An ED can be the early sign of an impending psychosis, or psychotic symptoms can signal the beginning of an ED. The advent of the psychosis, and sometimes the treatment of the psychosis can cure the eating disorder, but it can sometimes aggravate it. The case presented illustrates the difficulties in managing a patient with a comorbid eating disorder and psychosis. To ensure a rigorous assessment of both psychotic and eating disorder symptoms, the focus should be on the pattern of appearance or emergence of symptoms, their phenomenology, clinical and family background of the patient, and clinical status on follow-up.ConclusionThe comorbidity between eating disorders and psychosis is infrequent and raises several conceptual and methodological questions. Epidemiological and family studies show that there is no more significant association between psychosis and ED, although these results are somehow limited by the lack of rigorous data regarding ED.

IntroductionHuntington’s disease (HD) is a progressive neuropsychiatric and degenerative disorder that shows an autosomal dominant inheritance pattern. The principal symptoms of HD are progressive movement disorders, cognitive deterioration, dementia, and certain psychiatric manifestations, which may occur in many different forms, such as depression, psychosis, personality changes.ObjectivesIn this presentation, two female HD patients with psychotic components complicated with suicidal and homicidal thoughts will be reported to better illustrate psychiatric components of HD.MethodsHospitalization records of these two patients with genetically verified HD diagnosis indicated that their psychiatric health precipitously deteriorated in the last decade.ResultsWhile the first patient suffered from severe depression, anxiety, suicidality; persecution ideas, suspiciousness, hostility were noted more prominently in the latter. Moreover, both cases had a positive family history for psychiatric diseases which is one of the hallmarks of HD. Anti-psychotic drug olanzapine, which has minor side-effects on EPS, was found to be highly effective on our HD patients, alleviating the behavioral and psychiatric symptoms of the disease.ConclusionsIn conclusion, HD should be one of the differential diagnoses if patients with psychiatric complaints have accompanying neurological findings such as movement disorders and impaired memory, and great attention should be paid to the extrapyramidal system (EPS) sensitivity of the chosen treatment regime when treating the HD patients,

Impulsivity in depressed clients

This study aims to explore impulsivity as a component of aggression in depressed clients. This study used a qualitative method with a phenomenological study approach. There were 11 study participants in this investigation. A thematic analysis was used in analyzing the data. The study produced four themes: (1) uncontrolled anger as the initial expression of impulsivity, (2) anger manifestations through reckless actions, (3) homicidal versus suicidal thoughts during the impulsive phase, and (4) self-efficacy at the end of impulsivity. Impulsivity is the main form of aggression in depressed clients. Nurses need to pay attention to impulsive behaviors in depressed clients, especially by helping clients to build good coping strategies and improve the quality of their social relations so that they can break the chain of the characteristics of impulsivity.

DOUBLE JEOPARDY: UNTANGLING DEPRESSION, PARKINSON'S DISEASE & FRONTOTEMPORAL DEMENTIA IN CLINICAL PRACTICE WITH BEDSIDE COGNITIVE TESTING

Introduction Progressive supranuclear palsy is a taupathy disorder often mistaken on diagnosis by other neurocognitive disorders such as Parkinson's (PD) and Alzheimer's (AD) disease amongst other. PSP tends to be diagnosed in the later course of the disease and by time of diagnosis, individuals have a median survival of 7?years. PSP is a disease in which a diagnosis and treatment is done in a multidisiplinary approach involving collaboration of Psychiatry and Neurology. As it was seen in this clinical case which describes a patient with undetected progressive supranuclear palsy who were referred to a university hospital psychiatric emergency services facility for treatment of late onset symptoms and signs attributed to primary psychopathology related to behavioral variant of frontotemporal lobar degeneration (FTLDbv). Methods The patient described in the clinical vignette underwent a comprehensive neuropsychiatric assessment, given that the accuracy of the diagnosis of FTLDbv was in doubt. The clinical interview identified no significant prior developmental, medical, neurological, psychiatric, or substance use disorders; no family history of neuropsychiatric disturbance; and no significant psychosocial stressor before the onset of his neuropsychiatric condition at age 59. Bedside cognitive testing showed a Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS) score suggestive of mild symptoms of depression, and would be unlikely to explain his new onset psychosis. His subclinical Executive Interview 25 (EXIT 25) score and normal Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE) were not indicative of a dementia syndrome. Given the strong temporal relationship between the onset of his behavioral changes and perceptual disturbances and the start of levodopa/carbidopa, this medication was discontinued. He was admitted to the inpatient psychiatric service for observation. He was started initially on an atypical antipsychotic, but had this medication discontinued, as he no longer exhibited symptoms of psychosis. His citalopram was titrated to 40mg daily to optimize treatment of his major depressive disorder. Patient was discharge with complete resolution of psychotic symptoms and with diagnosis of Depressive disorder, unspecified and medication-induced psychotic disorder with delusions and hallucinations. A dopamine transporter (DaT) protein scan, a marker for presynaptic terminals in dopaminergic nigrostriatal neuros (marker for PD) and or iodine-123-metaiodobenzylguanadine (MIBG) myocardial scintigraphy (marker for DLB), was not performed. Results CASE REPORT: A 59-year-old, left handed, previously healthy gentleman was brought by police to a university hospital psychiatry emergency services for evaluation of acute safety concerns, regarding behavioral and personality changes. Patient was admitted to the hospital displaying motor symptoms with appearance of jaw tremor, ataxia, and urinary incontinence. After a negative brain MRI and head CT scan, the neurology team concluded that he had Parkinson`s disease and patient was discharged on levodopa/carbidopa (25?mg/?100 mg) QID and citalopram 20?mg daily for associated depressive symptoms with no benefit. After discharge from the hospital, he had become increasingly impulsive, hypersexual and engaging in risky behaviors with firearms. Persistent and progressive change in personality and behavior were the earliest displayed signs and they remained the most prominent features of his condition. All of these disturbances worsened after patient was started on levodopa/carbidopa. After evaluation by the psychiatry consultation and liaison service, a Mental status examination revealed cognitive and neurovegetative symptoms of depression as well as auditory illusions and concerns that a stranger had invaded his home. He denied manic symptoms. No suicidal and homicidal thoughts. Despite extensive neurological and neuropsychological evaluation 10-months later, surprisingly, it was established the diagnosis of progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP), as at that visit the patient presented with predominantly delay axial Parkinsonism, supranuclear gaze palsy, and increased falls due to postural instability. A neuropsychological assessment provided evidence of an executive syndrome of subcortical frontal type. Conclusions Progressive supranuclear palsy is a debilitating taupathy disorder that often is mistaken on diagnosis by other neurocognitive disorders such as Parkinson's dementia, Alzheimer's dementia and Frontotemporal lobar degeneration amongst others. Thus, making PSP diagnosis difficult at initial presentation and often presenting later in life. PSP diagnosis requires a multidisciplinary approach, a collaboration between Psychiatry and Neurology to piece together the complex problems that often manifest in challenging neuropsychiatric syndromes. The possibility of PSP should be considered in the differential diagnosis of late onset psychiatric syndromes. Early PSP diagnosis is imperative for both patients and physicians, as proper treatment will be started without delay to address PSP symptomatology. Thus, reducing the burden of patient and family, as well as reducing unnecessary diagnostic tests, hospitalizations and sub-optimal psychiatric treatment. It is imperative that providers from all specialties be aware of PSP early presentation and how it can be mistaken, specially in early stages, with other neurocognitive disorders in order to make proper referrals for the most effective treatment available. A Novel Approach to Assess Violent and Homicidal Ideation: The I-HAVAT©

Background: Child and adolescent psychiatrists and clinicians often assess individuals who present with homicidal and violent thoughts. These assessments are critical, for patient safety and societal protection. The psychiatrist must ultimately decide if the patient can return to the community safely, regardless if the patient has initially presented to inpatient, outpatient, emergency room or school settings. While there is some consensus regarding the best practice in assessing risk for serious self-harm, approaches to the assessment of homicide and violence are far more disparate. Clinicians often determine risk based on known risk factors and type of violence threatened, and many offer a “risk level”. However, in the absence of an easy to use tool to assess risk, the judgment relies on clinician experience, talent and training, at the expense of a uniform, organized and comprehensive approach. Methods: We describe an assessment tool that uses a semi-structured interview to comprehensively evaluate an individual’s risk for violence. The tool guides the clinician to gather a detailed description of the current episode, then reviews the salient risk and protective factors and ends with a structured mental status exam developed to help characterize typical pathways to violence. Discussion: The steps in assessing children and adolescents presenting with homicidal threats in various clinical settings, as well as the steps in determining the appropriate level of care and treatment plan, will be discussed. The implementation of the assessment tool in an inpatient setting and the clinicians’ reaction to using it will also be discussed. Conclusion: The I-HAVAT© (Institute of Living-Homicide and Violence Assessment Tool) is a semi-structured method of assessing patients presenting with violent or homicidal threats by collecting and streamlining pertinent clinical information and ultimately increases the clinicians’ confidence level in making decisions and recommendations for determining the level of care and appropriate treatment plan.

Extended suicide, or homicide followed by suicide.

Suicide with accompanying homicide is frightening and ill understood. To raise professional awareness of its complexities and difficulties and identify areas for developing research. A Crime in Mind seminar was held in London in December 2018, with four expert presentations and discussion. This paper draws on that seminar and supplementary literature. Homicide/suicide is very difficult to predict and thus prevent. Victims and perpetrators may have a dependency relationship. Better training, especially of general practitioners, may increase the likelihood of detecting signs of despair and delusional ideas. Psychiatrists should be more alert to fixed delusions and homicidal thoughts. Individual assessment and management alone is unlikely to be sufficient. Public health strategies are likely to be important too. Weapons control is vital. Employers of people with great personal responsibility and special access to potentially lethal tools, such as airline pilots, and perhaps clinicians, should have regular, compulsory, mental health checks. Six points of clinical importance emerged, including lowering the threshold for diagnosing delusional disorder and the establishment of anti-violence clinics.

Are the Deadliest Mass Shootings Preventable? An Assessment of Leakage, Information Reported to Law Enforcement, and Firearms Acquisition Prior to Attacks in the United States

This study examined the 15 deadliest public mass shootings in the United States from March 1998 to February 2018 to assess (a) leakage of violent thoughts/intent, (b) leakage of specific interest in mass killing, (c) concerning behaviors reported to law enforcement, (d) concerning interest in homicide reported to law enforcement, and (e) firearms acquisition. We then compared our findings on the deadliest public mass shooters with the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s (FBI) findings on active shooters in general. Overall, the results suggest that most incidents were indeed preventable based on information known about offenders in advance, and that the deadliest mass shooters exhibited more warning signs and were more often reported to law enforcement than other active shooters. Future prevention efforts should aim to educate, encourage, and pressure the public to report warning signs to law enforcement, educate and train law enforcement so that they can more effectively investigate potential threats, and limit firearms access for people who have admitted having homicidal or suicidal thoughts or being interested in committing a mass shooting. These relatively straightforward steps could significantly reduce the prevalence of future attacks.

"Like Death is Near": Expressions of Suicidal and Homicidal Ideation in the Blog Posts of Family Caregivers of People with Dementia.

Background: The challenges of providing care for someone with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias (ADRD) have been associated with increased stress, poor mental and physical health, social isolation, and financial distress. More recently, caregiving has been associated with high rates of suicidal and homicidal ideation, but the research on these phenomena is limited. The present study analyzed a sample of blogs written by family caregivers of people with ADRD to explore thoughts of suicide and homicide expressed by these caregivers. Methods: Blogs written by self-identified informal caregivers of people with ADRD were identified using a systematic search method and data were analyzed using a qualitative thematic analysis. Results: Five themes related to thoughts of suicide and homicide by caregivers and people with ADRD were derived from the analysis: (1) end-of-life care; (2) thoughts of death and euthanasia by the person with ADRD; (3) surrogate decision making; (4) thoughts of suicide by the caregiver; and (5) thoughts of homicide and euthanasia by the caregiver. Conclusions: The results capture the reality of suicidal and homicidal thoughts among family caregivers of people with ADRD, supporting calls for more research on these complex topics and highlighting the need for changes to clinical practice to prevent thoughts from becoming behaviors or actions.

Lifestyle of school going adolescents in Mumbai, India: a cross sectional study

Background: Adolescents, as defined by World Health organization, constitute individuals in between the age group of 10 to 19 years. Children, youth and young people are the other groups which have ages which overlap with the adolescent age group. The hormonal changes at this age are responsible not only for physiological growth but also emotional and cognitive changes. Lifestyle in this age group may have lasting and, in many cases, lifelong implications. We conducted this cross-sectional study to holistically analyse lifestyle of school adolescents in Mumbai.Methods: This was a cross sectional study conducted in the in a tertiary care medical college. The students belonging to an English medium co-education school of a metropolitan city were included in this study on the basis of a predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria. A culturally acceptable questionnaire was structured in simple language and used in this study. Demographic data was asked. All questions were closed ended and requiring specific response the questionnaire was subjected to critical evaluation by experts from the field of Public Health Pediatrics, high school teachers, heads of schools, experts from Social justice and law input from the experts were incorporated in the questionnaire. Statistical analysis was done using SSPE 22.0 Software.Results: A total of 538 adolescents were studied in this cross-sectional study. There were 270 boys (50.18%) and 268 (49.82%) girls with a M:F ratio of 1:0.95. Mean age of the studied cases was found to be 12.4±1.44 years. Majority of the adolescents were found to be residing in buildings (66.36%) and average family size was found to be 5.63±3.34 members Majority of the boys and girls (66.92%) were not having any knowledge about HIV/AIDS.7.06% adolescents were found to have suicidal or homicidal thoughts. 93.31% adolescents liked to come to school and 83.83% claimed to be obedient.Conclusions: This cross-sectional study highlights the fact that adolescents have a significant amount of psychosocial problems. Important amongst these included inclination towards substance abuse, suicidal or homicidal thoughts and ignorance about HIV/AIDS. Strategies to tackle these issue needs to be devised so as to tackle these problems faced by adolescents.

Aggressiveness, violence, homicidality, homicide, and Lyme disease.

BackgroundNo study has previously analyzed aggressiveness, homicide, and Lyme disease (LD).Materials and methodsRetrospective LD chart reviews analyzed aggressiveness, compared 50 homicidal with 50 non-homicidal patients, and analyzed homicides.ResultsMost aggression with LD was impulsive, sometimes provoked by intrusive symptoms, sensory stimulation or frustration and was invariably bizarre and senseless. About 9.6% of LD patients were homicidal with the average diagnosis delay of 9 years. Postinfection findings associated with homicidality that separated from the non-homicidal group within the 95% confidence interval included suicidality, sudden abrupt mood swings, explosive anger, paranoia, anhedonia, hypervigilance, exaggerated startle, disinhibition, nightmares, depersonalization, intrusive aggressive images, dissociative episodes, derealization, intrusive sexual images, marital/family problems, legal problems, substance abuse, depression, panic disorder, memory impairments, neuropathy, cranial nerve symptoms, and decreased libido. Seven LD homicides included predatory aggression, poor impulse control, and psychosis. Some patients have selective hyperacusis to mouth sounds, which I propose may be the result of brain dysfunction causing a disinhibition of a primitive fear of oral predation.ConclusionLD and the immune, biochemical, neurotransmitter, and the neural circuit reactions to it can cause impairments associated with violence. Many LD patients have no aggressiveness tendencies or only mild degrees of low frustration tolerance and irritability and pose no danger; however, a lesser number experience explosive anger, a lesser number experience homicidal thoughts and impulses, and much lesser number commit homicides. Since such large numbers are affected by LD, this small percent can be highly significant. Much of the violence associated with LD can be avoided with better prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of LD.

Spontaneous Violent and Homicide Thoughts in Four Homicide Contexts

Although homicide remains an important topic of research, the majority of the research has focused on homicidal behavior and not homicide thoughts. Yet research into homicidal thoughts provides valuable insights into issues such as premeditation. In three experiments, we instructed participants to imagine different scenarios describing a situation where homicide and violence actually take place, but that do not contain violence or homicidal actions. We used both explicit and implicit methods to measure homicide and violent ideation. The evidence from these experiments indicates that when people imagine homicide scenarios, they think about violence at a substantial rate, but rarely consider homicide. Limitations and future directions are discussed.
