Sex sifferences in lifes essential eight and its association with mortality among adults without known CVD

Abstract Background The American Heart Association’s Life’s Essential 8 (LE8) score is a helpful tool to quantify cardiovascular health (CVH) metrics. Sex differences in relation to LE8 and its association with mortality are not known. Methods The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) between 2009 and 2018 was utilized to evaluate the prevalence of health metrics included in LE8 among adult patients, stratified by sex. Health metrics were further subdivided into health behaviors (diet, physical activity, nicotine exposure, and sleep) and health factors (body mass index, non–high density lipoprotein cholesterol, blood glucose, and blood pressure). LE8 scores were also evaluated based on age, race/ethnicity, and socioeconomic status. Cox proportional hazard models were used to evaluate the association between the levels of CVH and risk of all-cause and cardiovascular mortality. Results Among 22,761 participants, 52% were female. Overall CVH score was similar in both females and males (65.8 vs. 65.9). Females had higher health factors score (64.3 vs. 63.1, p <0.001) and lower health behaviors score (67.2 vs 68.6, p <0.001). Amongst individual metrics, blood pressure score was higher in females (73.2 vs. 67.7, p <0.001) while males had higher physical activity score (70.6 vs. 54.9, p <0.001). For individuals under 65 years of age, overall CVH and health factors scores were higher in females while in those age 65 or older, males had higher scores. The most prominent sex differences were noted in non-Hispanic Black females who had significantly lower CVH scores than Black males. High or moderate LE8 scores vs. low LE8 scores demonstrated lower all-cause and CV mortality in both sexes (p-interaction 0.98 and 0.9). High or moderate health behaviors scores also demonstrated a significant association with lower all-cause and CV mortality, with the reduction in mortality being more prominent in females (p-interaction 0.01 and 0.03). Conclusions We demonstrate important sex differences in CVH metrics along with notable variations based on age and race/ethnicity. Furthermore, we highlight sex differences in the association of CVH metrics with mortality. These findings underscore the importance of designing and implementing effective strategies for both sexes, aimed at targeting these specific factors.

High health behaviors scores also demonstrated a significant association with lower all-cause (0.34 vs. 0.24) and CV mortality (HR 0.47 vs. 0.26) in both males and females, respectively (p-interaction 0.20 and 0.11). ConclusionsWe demonstrate important sex differences in CVH metrics along with notable variations based on age and race/ethnicity. Furthermore, we highlight that CVH metrics including health factors and health behaviors are associated with mortality in both females and males. These findings underscore the importance of designing and implementing effective strategies for both sexes, aimed at targeting these specific factors.

Sociodemographic characteristics, lifestyle behaviors, and symptoms associated with fluid overload among non-hospitalized and community-dwelling older adults with heart failure: A population-based approach

BackgroundFluid overload is a major complication in patients with heart failure (HF) and the main reason for hospitalization. The purpose of the study was to explore the associations of fluid overload with sociodemographic characteristics, lifestyle behaviors, and symptoms among non-hospitalized and community-dwelling older adults with HF using large population data. MethodsDescriptive and multivariate analyses were conducted on the Health and Retirement Study 2016. ResultsFluid overload was prevalent in almost half of the sample. Female older adults with HF were more likely to have fluid overload (OR:1.43, p = 0.037) as well as being Black (OR:1.40, p = 0.041). Higher physical activity scores were associated with less likelihood of having fluid overload (OR:0.99, p = 0.025). Symptoms of shortness of breath (OR=2.18, p = 0.001), pain (OR=1.82, p < 0.001), and fatigue (OR=1.45, p = 0.025) were significantly associated with fluid overload. ConclusionFemale and Black community-dwelling older adults with HF are at higher risk of fluid overload. Symptoms of shortness of breath, pain, and fatigue are significant manifestations of fluid overload. Effective patient-centered interventions to promote fluid flow via physical activity may help older adults with HF manage fluid overload and alleviate associated symptoms.

Estimated dietary intake of polyphenols from cereal foods and associated lifestyle and demographic factors in the Melbourne Collaborative Cohort Study

Cereal foods are consumed globally and are important sources of polyphenols with potential health benefits, yet dietary intakes are unclear. We aimed to calculate the dietary intakes of polyphenols from cereal foods in the Melbourne Collaborative Cohort Study (MCCS), and describe intakes by demographic and lifestyle factors. We estimated intakes of alkylresorcinols, lignans and phenolic acids in n = 39,892 eligible MCCS participants, using baseline dietary data (1990–1994) from a 121-item FFQ containing 17 cereal foods, matched to a polyphenol database developed from published literature and Phenol-Explorer Database. Intakes were estimated within groups according to lifestyle and demographic factors. The median (25th–75th percentile) intake of total polyphenols from cereal foods was 86.9 mg/day (51.4–155.8). The most consumed compounds were phenolic acids, with a median intake of 67.1 mg (39.5–118.8), followed by alkylresorcinols of 19.7 mg (10.8–34.6). Lignans made the smallest contribution of 0.50 mg (0.13–0.87). Higher polyphenol intakes were associated with higher relative socio-economic advantage and prudent lifestyles, including lower body mass index (BMI), non-smoking and higher physical activity scores. The findings based on polyphenol data specifically matched to the FFQ provide new information on intakes of cereal polyphenols, and how they might vary according to lifestyle and demographic factors.

Physical and Behavioral Factors Associated With Improvement in Physical Health and Function Among US Women During Midlife

Women often experience physiological and functional changes in their health during midlife. Identifying women who have clinically important improvements in physical health and function and evaluating the factors associated with these improvements can identify intervention targets at midlife. To identify factors associated with improvements in physical health and function among women during midlife. Participants were part of the Study of Women's Health Across the Nation (SWAN), a diverse cohort of US women early in midlife, and followed up annually for up to 21 years between 1996 and 2017. Analyses were based on visit 8 (2004-2006) through visit 15 (2015-2017). Statistical analysis was conducted from October 2021 to March 2023. Sociodemographic indicators, health status measures, and comorbidities measured at visit 8. The main outcome was a clinically important (≥5 points) improvement in the physical component score (PCS) of the 36-item Short-Form Health Survey between visit 8 and visit 15. Of the 1807 women (at visit 8: mean [SD] age, 54.5 [2.7] years; 898 [50%] White participants) in SWAN who qualified for analysis, 265 (15%) experienced a clinically important improvement in PCS over a median of 11.1 years (IQR, 10.9-11.4 years). Factors associated with improvement in PCS included no financial strain (odds ratio [OR], 1.73; 95% CI, 1.18-2.52), no sleep disturbances (OR, 1.43; 95% CI, 1.05-1.96), no osteoarthritis (OR, 1.42; 95% CI, 1.01-1.99), and having a higher physical activity score (OR, 1.17; 95% CI, 1.00-1.37) as assessed at visit 8. Women who had a higher PCS at visit 8 (OR, 0.84; 95% CI, 0.83-0.86), who had a higher body mass index (OR, 0.95; 95% CI, 0.93-0.97), or who were taking more medications (OR, 0.93; 95% CI, 0.88-0.98) had lower odds of an improved PCS. This cohort study of women in midlife suggests that approximately 15% of women experienced clinically important improvements in health and function over an 11-year period. Several potentially modifiable factors associated with improvements may inform women of variables to target for future interventions.

Does remission in rheumatoid arthritis bring kinesiophobia, quality of life, fatigue, and physical activity closer to normal?

This study aimed to compare kinesiophobia, fatigue, physical activity, and quality of life (QoL) between the patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) in remission and a healthy population. The prospective controlled study included 45 female patients (mean age: 54.22±8.2 year; range, 37 to 67 year) with a diagnosis of RA determined to be in remission according to the Disease Activity Score in 28 Joints (DAS28) being ≤2.6 between January 2022 and February 2022. As a control group, 45 female healthy volunteers (mean age: 52.2±8.2 year; range, 34 to 70 year) of similar age were evaluated. The QoL, disease activity, pain, kinesiophobia, fatigue severity, and physical activity were assessed using the Health Assessment Questionnaire, DAS28, Visual Analog Scale, Tampa Scale of Kinesiophobia, Fatigue Severity Scale, and International Physical Activity Questionnaire, respectively. There was no significant difference between the groups in demographic data. A statistically significant difference was found between the groups in terms of pain, C-reactive protein level, fatigue, kinesiophobia, QoL, and total, high, and moderate physical activity scores (p<0.001). Among the RA patients in remission, there was a significant correlation between kinesiophobia and moderate physical activity and QoL, as well as between fatigue and high physical activity (p<0.05). Patient education and multidisciplinary approach strategies should be developed to increase the QoL and physical activity and reduce kinesiophobia in RA patients in remission since there may be a decrease in physical activity due to kinesiophobia, fatigue, and fear of movement in this patient group compared to the healthy population, impairing their QoL.

Mobility impairment and life satisfaction in the Northern Region of Malawi.

BackgroundThere exist many psychosocial sequelae associated with mobility impairment, especially in low-resource settings where access to mobility assistive devices is limited.ObjectivesThis study aims to (1) define the burden and presenting aetiologies of mobility impairment in the rural Northern Region of Malawi and (2) assess the relationship between physical disability, life satisfaction and access to mobility aids.MethodsAt mobility device donation clinics throughout the Northern Region of Malawi, adults living with mobility impairment were surveyed with a demographic questionnaire and a series of validated surveys to assess their physical activity levels (Global Physical Activity Questionnaire [GPAQ]), degree of mobility impairment (Washington Group Extended Set Questions on Disability) and life satisfaction (patient-reported outcomes measurement information systems satisfaction with participation in social roles and general life satisfaction).ResultsThere were 251 participants who qualified for inclusion, of which 193 completed all surveys. Higher physical activity scores were positively correlated with increased life satisfaction: (1) satisfaction with participation in social roles (0.481, p < 0.0001) and (2) general life satisfaction (0.230, p < 0.001). Respondents who had previously used a formal mobility device reported 235.5% higher physical activity levels ([139.0%, 333.0%], p = 0.006), significantly higher satisfaction with participation in social roles ([0.21, 6.67], p = 0.037) and equivocally higher general life satisfaction ([−1.77, 3.84], p = 0.470).ConclusionDisability and mental health do not exist in isolation from one another. Given the positive correlations between formal mobility device usage and both physical activity and life satisfaction, interventions that increase access to mobility-assistive devices in undertreated populations are imperative.ContributionThis study contributes to the understanding of the complex relationship between physical disability, access to mobility aids, and life satisfaction. Results from this study suggest the potential benefit that increasing access to mobility aids may have in improving the quality of life of mobility impaired persons in resource-limited settings, such as the Northern Region of Malawi.

Distinct gait dimensions are modulated by physical activity in Parkinson's disease patients.

Parkinson’s disease (PD) is the fastest growing neurodegenerative disease, but disease-modifying or preventive treatments are lacking. Physical activity is a modifiable factor that decreases the PD risk and improves motor symptoms in PD. Understanding which dimensions of gait performance correlate with physical activity in PD can have important pathophysiological and therapeutic implications. Clinical/demographic data together with physical activity levels were collected from thirty-nine PD patients. Gait analysis was performed wearing seven inertial measurement units on the lower body, reconstructing the subjects’ lower body motion using 3D kinematic biomechanical models. Higher physical activity scores were significantly correlated with MDS-UPDRS part III scores (r = − 0.58, p value = 9.2 × 10−5), age (r = − 0.39, p value = 1.5 × 10−2) and quality-of-life (r = − 0.47, p value = 5.9 × 10−3). Physical activity was negatively associated with MDS-UPDRS part III scores after adjusting for age and disease duration (β = − 0.08530, p value = 0.0010). The effect of physical activity on quality-of-life was mediated by the MDS-UPDRS part III (62.10%, 95% CI = 0.0758–1.78, p value = 0.022). The level of physical activity was correlated primarily with spatiotemporal performance. While spatiotemporal performance displays the strongest association with physical activity, other quality-of-movement dimensions of clinical relevance (e.g., smoothness, rhythmicity) fail to do so. Interventions targeting these ought to be leveraged for performance enhancement in PD through neuroprotective and brain network connectivity strengthening. Associations between Pre-Diagnostic Physical Activity with Breast Cancer Characteristics and Survival.

Simple SummaryPhysical activity is known to reduce breast cancer risk and improve patient prognosis. However, the association between pre-diagnostic physical activity and the aggressiveness of breast cancer is unclear. Here, we assessed the effects of pre-diagnostic physical activity on breast cancer aggressiveness among breast cancer patients. Despite not improving overall survival, higher levels of pre-diagnostic physical activity contributed to less aggressive forms of breast tumours. These results underline the importance of physical activity in improving patient prognosis. Physical activity (PA) is known to reduce breast cancer (BC) risk and improve patient prognosis. However, the association between pre-diagnostic PA and the aggressiveness of BC is unclear. We investigated the associations between PA, BC tumour characteristics, and survival. This retrospective observational study included 7688 BC patients from the Singapore Breast Cancer Cohort (2010–2016). PA information from the questionnaire included intensity (light/moderate/vigorous) and duration (<1 h/1–2 h/>2 h per week). A PA score (1–5) incorporating intensity and duration was calculated. Associations between PA score and tumour characteristics such as stage, histological grade, nodal and hormone receptor status were examined using multinomial regression. Moreover, 10-year overall survival was estimated using Cox regression analysis in 6572 patients after excluding patients with invalid survival data and stage IV disease. Breast tumours associated with higher PA score were more likely to be non-invasive (ORinvasive vs. non-invasive(reference) [95% CI]: 0.71 [0.58–0.87], p-trend = 0.001), of lower grade (ORpoorly vs. well differentiated(reference): 0.69 [0.52–0.93], p = 0.014), ER-positive (ORER-negative vs. ER-positive(reference): 0.94 [0.89–1.00], p-trend = 0.049), PR-positive (ORPR-negative vs. PR-positive(reference): 0.82 [0.67–0.99], p = 0.041), HER2-negative (ORHER2-negative vs. HER2-positive(reference): 1.29 [1.02–1.62], p-trend = 0.002), and less likely to be of HER2-overexpressed subtype (ORHER2-overexpressed vs. Luminal A(reference): 0.89 [0.81–0.98], p-trend = 0.018). These associations (odds ratios) were more pronounced among post-menopausal patients. A higher PA score did not improve survival. Higher levels of pre-diagnostic PA were associated with less aggressive tumours in BC patients. This illustrated another benefit of PA in addition to its known role in BC risk reduction.

Vitamin D Levels: Associations with Acute Pain Events and Self-Reported Pain in Children with Sickle Cell Disease

Background/Aims: Individuals with sickle cell disease (SCD) are at high risk for vitamin D deficiency due to dark skin color, limited physical activity, poor nutrition, and renal dysfunction. In smaller retrospective studies, vitamin D deficiency in SCD was associated with increased frequency of acute pain events and higher opioid use, however the impact of vitamin D deficiency on pain related patient reported outcomes has not been described . Supplementation with high dose vitamin D is shown to be associated with fewer pain days per week and higher physical activity scores in patients with chronic pain. Thus, the objective of our study was to evaluate relationship between vitamin D levels, acute health care utilization and self-reported pain among children with SCD. We hypothesized that vitamin D deficiency is associated with increase health care utilization for pain and patient-reported outcomes for pain.Methods: Patients with SCD (1 to 18 years of age), enrolled in Sickle Cell Clinical Research and Intervention Program (SCCRIP), at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital were included in the study (Hankins et.al., Pediatric Blood and Cancer, 2018). Demographic, clinical and laboratory data were extracted from SCCRIP database. Prospective pain event leading to a hospital visit was analyzed. We analyzed pain-related hospitalizations in two ways: the number of pain-related hospitalizations within 2 years prior to and after vitamin D measurement in a cross-sectional design and longitudinally. Generalized linear regression model was used to examine associations between vitamin D and cross-sectional pain events with adjusting for hydroxyurea use. Generalized linear mixed effect model was used to assess the associations between vitamin D and longitudinal pain events, with adjusting for SCD genotype, sex, age, hydroxyurea use and interaction between age and hydroxyurea use.Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory™ Sickle Cell Disease Module (PedsQL™ SCD) was used to measure pain and pain interference using 1) Pain and Hurt and 2) Pain Impact scales. PedsQL™ SCD assessments include a Likert response scale. Items are reverse -scored and transformed to a 0-100 scale where higher scores indicate better health related quality of life in that scale. Two sample t-test or Wilcoxon rank sum test was used to compare mean scores between the two groups.Results: A total of 799 patients (females, n=398; males, n=401) were included in the study. Mean age (Standard Deviation [SD]), range at time of first vitamin D measurement for entire cohort was 8.7 (4.7), (0.8-18 years). Mean (SD) initial vitamin D level for entire cohort was 19.0 (9.4) ng/dl. Mean (SD) number of pain-related hospitalizations within two years of first vitamin D measurement was higher in the vitamin D deficient group as compared to non deficient group [0.81(1.97) vs 0.66 (1.2), (p=0.0034)]. Longitudinal data analyses showed vitamin D deficiency was associated with increased number of pain related hospitalizations (p=0.0091), after adjusting for covariates listed above (Figure 1a).Mean (SD) scores for Pain and Hurt in vitamin D deficient versus non deficient group were [74.5.7(18.2) versus 83.5(15.6), p < 0.001]. Mean (SD) scores for Pain Impact in vitamin D deficient group as compared to non deficient group were [(66.7 (22.7) versus 75.5 (22.3), p <0.001] (Figure 1b)Conclusion: Results indicated that low vitamin D levels predicted higher frequency of painful events leading to a hospital visit and were associated with higher prevalence of self-reported pain and pain interference. Further studies evaluating mechanisms by which vitamin D influences sickle cell pain are warranted and larger controlled trials can help evaluate the therapeutic efficacy of vitamin D for sickle cell pain. Physical Activity, Type Of Workplaces, And Mood Disturbance Among Chinese Adults During Covid-19

PURPOSE: The Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic is the biggest public health challenge in this century. With the widespread lockdown in cities, public face new challenges in switching to work-from-home, maintaining regular physical activity, and retaining a positive mood. The purpose of this study was to explore the physical activity and type of workplace among Chinese adults during the COVID-19 lockdown and their association with mood disturbance. METHODS: A total of 1849 adults (male = 548, female = 1301, average age M = 42.82, SD = 4.79) from a large city located in Southwest China completed an online survey in April, 2020. Measures included the Chinese version of the Profile of Mood States short form and the Leisure-Time Exercise Questions. Type of workplace (i.e., did not work, commuted to work, worked from home, or a mix of commuting and working from home) was also reported. RESULTS: Females had significantly higher mood disturbance score than males, t(1847) = -3.03, p < .01, Mean = 9. 56, SD = 18.56, Mean = 12.74, SD = 21.26, respectively. ANOVA results showed marginal differences among types of the workplace in mood disturbance, F(3,1848) = 2.45, p = .06. Post-hoc test showed that compared to those who did not work during the pandemic, those who commuted to work had lower mood disturbance score, p < .05, M = 14.17, SD = 22.20, M = 10.93, SD = 19.95, respectively. In terms of physical activity, there was no gender difference, t(1847) = 1.48, p > .05. However, ANOVA analysis showed significant differences in physical activity among different types of workplace, F(3,1848) = 3.92, p < .01. Compared to those who worked from home during the pandemic, those who had a mix type had higher physical activity score, p < .01, M = 38.24, SD = 48.89, M = 49.96, SD = 62.97, respectively. Finally, regression analysis showed that controlling gender and type of workplace, more physical activity significantly predicted lower mood disturbance score, (β = -.097, p < .001). CONCLUSION: Females and those did not work during the pandemic are at higher risk for mood disturbance, while physical activity is a protective factor. With the continuing COVID-19 pandemic, public health professionals should have a greater awareness of negative mood among the public and develop specific guidance on promoting physical activity in a time-sensitive manner.

Relationship Between Health-Related Fitness Knowledge, Physical Activity Intensity, and Activity Levels in High School Students

The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between health-related fitness knowledge (HRFK) and various intensity and activity levels of physical activity in male and female high school students. At the end of a Fitness for Life course, high school students (N = 280) completed a HRFK questionnaire and the Leisure-Time Physical Activity Questionnaire (Godin &amp; Shephard, 1985). Pearson correlations were computed among physical activity levels (mild, moderate, and strenuous). A one-way MANOVA with appropriate follow-up univariate ANOVAs examined the effect of gender on physical activity intensity scores (total, healthy, and strenuous). A one-way ANOVA examined the difference in HRFK scores between the active group and the less active group. Results showed no significant correlation between HRFK and all physical activity scores. Females had higher HRFK scores and males had higher physical activity scores for all intensity levels. Ninety-two percent of all students were classified as active and males were more active than females. There was no significant difference in HRFK scores between the active group and the less active groups.

Lower levels of physical activity are associated with pain progression in older adults, a longitudinal study.

While pain is common in older adults, the association with physical activity remains unclear. Currently, the role physical activity plays in impacting pain developing over time is not well defined. Latent transition analysis (LTA) is a model-based approach to identifying underlying subgroups in a population, longitudinally, based on measured characteristics. In this study, LTA was used to explore the associations between physical activity levels and pain classes of adults aged over 50years, from the Irish Longitudinal Study on Ageing (n=8,175) across three waves of data collection (4years). Using three previously established pain classes (No Pain; Low-Moderate Impact Pain; High Impact Pain), 66% of older adults were classified as having 'No Pain' across the three waves. At Wave 1, individuals reporting low (OR=4.00, 95% CI [3.21, 5.17]) or moderate (OR=1.59, 95% CI [1.27, 1.99]) levels of physical activity are more likely to be in the High Impact Pain class, than the No Pain class. Longitudinally, individuals in the No Pain class with low or moderate physical activity were more likely to transition to the High Impact Pain class compared to those with higher physical activity scores (from Wave 1 to Wave 2, OR=1.90, 95% CI [1.15, 3.37]; and from Wave 2 to Wave 3, OR=2.27, 95% CI [1.40, 4.74]). Older adults who do not meet minimum physical activity guidelines for moderate intensity exercise are at increased risk of higher impact pain when followed over 4years. Older adults who do not meet minimum physical activity guidelines are at increased risk of transitioning to higher impact pain classes when followed over 4years.

An Active Lifestyle Is Associated with Better Cognitive Function Over Time in APOE ɛ4 Non-Carriers.

Available evidence on the association of physical activity (PA) or sedentary behavior with cognitive decline is inconclusive. To assess the association between an active lifestyle score and leisure-time physical activity (LTPA) and changes in cognitive function in the Seguimiento Universidad de Navarra (SUN) prospective cohort. Cognitive function was evaluated in a subsample of 806 participants of the SUN cohort study using the validated Telephone Interview for Cognitive Status-modified (STICS-m) questionnaire at baseline and after 6 years. LTPA was evaluated with a previously validated 17-item self-administered questionnaire and with information on sedentary lifestyles. We also calculated a multidimensional 8-item PA score. Multivariable linear regression analysis evaluated the association between PA and changes in cognitive function and its interaction by APOE genotype. Mean age of participants was 66 (SD 5.3) years and 69.7% were male. When stratifying by APOE variants, no significant associations between the active lifestyle score or LTPA and changes in cognitive performance over time were found among APOE ɛ4 carriers. However, we observed that a higher adherence to an active lifestyle (high versus low PA score β= 0.76 95% CI 0.15,1.36; p trend = 0.011) and a high LTPA (Q4 versus Q1 β= 0.63; 95% CI -0.01,1.26; p trend = 0.030) were associated with more favorable changes in cognitive function over time among APOE ɛ4 non-carriers with statistically significant interactions in both cases (p for interaction = 0.042 for PA score, and p = 0.039 for LTPA). The results of the present study suggest that an active lifestyle is associated with a better status of cognitive function over time only among APOE ɛ4 non-carriers.

Dietary habits and physical activity: Which influence on abdominal fat deposition in children and adolescents?

BACKGROUND: Prevention of childhood obesity is recommended throughout interventions aiming at enhancing healthy dietary habits (DH) and increasing physical activity (PA). OBJECTIVE: This cross-sectional study aimed at investigating DH and PA, in a sample of Italian children/adolescents. METHODS: We evaluated DH and PA by means of a previously validated questionnaire in 178 children/adolescents (88F/90M, 11.8±2.6 years): 49 normal weight (NW), 76 overweight (OW) and 53 with obesity (OB). Abdominal obesity was defined as Waist to Height Ratio (WHeR) &gt;0.5. RESULTS: DH did not differ in NW subjects compared to OW and OB but higher PA score (p = 0.001) was observed in NW than OW and OB. No association was found between DH and WHeR, unlike PA. Four clusters of subjects were identified that could be defined by DH and PA; only one cluster, defined by PA, showed a significantly lower WHeR within subjects playing sports at least 3–4 hours/week. Moreover, subjects belonging to this cluster did not skip the main meals, eat a varied diet and drank milk at breakfast. CONCLUSIONS: In our sample PA performed at least 3–4 hours/week is inversely associated with abdominal fat deposition and is expected to positively impact health, protecting from abdominal obesity.

Impact of Physical Activity Practice and Adherence to the Mediterranean Diet in Relation to Multiple Intelligences among University Students.

Physical activity is important at any time of life. Particularly in the university, people tend to have more sedentary life, due to their studies. Eating habits are another health factor to consider. In addition, the Multiple Intelligences theory is a proposal that seeks the integral development and well-being of people. A descriptive, cross-sectional, and non-experimental research with the purpose of this study is to establish the relationships between practice of physical activity and the intelligences and determine the relationship between diet and the different types of intelligence in 215 university students. Findings indicate higher adherence to Mediterranean Diet in women and higher physical activity scores in men. Regarding multiple intelligences, men have higher indices in Bodily-kinesthetic, Interpersonal, Logical-mathematical, Musical, and Spatial intelligences, while women show higher levels in relation to Linguistic, Intrapersonal, and Naturalistic intelligences. Main conclusions from this study suggest the relationship between multiple intelligence and healthy habits, while also highlighting the need to improve eating habits and achieve greater adherence to Mediterranean Diet.

Physical activity pattern and its relationship with overweight and obesity in saudi children.

BackgroundOverweight and obesity among children and adolescents are emerging public health problems. Modifiable lifestyle factors such as physical inactivity and eating out are responsible for the increased prevalence of obesity and related health risks.ObjectiveTo examine physical activity level and weight status among Saudi children in relation to age and gender.Study designIn a cross-sectional study, 200 apparently healthy Saudi children (118 boys and 82 girls), aged 5–15 years, were enrolled from the Pediatric clinics at King Abdulaziz University Hospital, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. To determine physical activity level, the International Physical Activity Questionnaire-Short Form-A was used. Anthropometric measurements were taken for all participants.ResultsCentral obesity was highly prevalent among adolescents as compared with a higher prevalence of general obesity in children. Physical activity level was significantly higher among adolescent boys than adolescent girls (P<.05). Girls scored almost double the total metabolic equivalent scores. More boys were considered highly active (59% vs. 40%) in contrast with more girls with low physical activity (38% vs. 26%). Among girls, high physical activity score was higher in children than in adolescents (40% vs. 21%) and an increasing number of adolescents were of low physical activity than children (64% vs. 38%). The majority of the study population were spending more than 2 h per day in watching TV and playing electronic games, but a slightly higher number of children showed sedentary behavior than adolescents. Adolescent girls were significantly spending more time watching TV than adolescent boys (P<.01). Significant inverse associations with most anthropometric measures and the time spent in watching TV and doing desk work were demonstrated in both genders.ConclusionThis study reports significant influence, by age and gender, contributing to physical inactivity and weight status among Saudi children.

Association of FTO rs1421085 with obesity, diet, physical activity, and socioeconomic status: A longitudinal birth cohort study

Background and aimsFat mass and obesity-associated protein (FTO) variants are among genetic variants frequently associated with obesity. We analyzed the association between FTO rs1421085 polymorphism and obesity, dietary intake, cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF), physical activity, and socioeconomic status (SES) from the age of 9–25 years. Methods and resultsThe sample included both birth cohorts (originally n = 1176) of the Estonian Children Personality Behaviour and Health Study. The association between FTO rs1421085 and obesity, dietary intake, CRF, physical activity, and SES from the age of 15–25 years was assessed using linear mixed-effects regression models. Associations at ages 9 (younger cohort only), 15, 18, and 25 years were assessed by one-way ANOVA. Male C-allele carriers had significantly (p < 0.05) higher body mass index (BMI), sum of 5 skinfolds, body fat percentage, and hip circumference from the age of 15–25 years. Findings were similar at the age of 9 years. In female subjects, waist-to-hip ratio was significantly greater in CC homozygotes. Interestingly, female CC homozygotes had a greater decrease in the rate of change in daily energy intake and lipid intake per year and higher physical activity score at every fixed time point. Moreover, in females, an effect of FTO × SES interaction on measures of obesity was observed. ConclusionThe FTO rs1421085 polymorphism was associated with obesity and abdominal obesity from childhood to young adulthood in males, and with abdominal obesity from adolescence to young adulthood in females. This association is rather related to differences in adipocyte energy metabolism than lifestyle.

Factors associated with change in self-reported physical activity in the very old: The Newcastle 85+ study.

BackgroundHigher physical activity (PA) has been linked to better health and functioning. Trajectories of PA and associated factors have been studied in older adults aged ≥65, but less is known about influences on PA change in the very old (aged ≥85).ObjectiveTo investigate factors associated with self-reported PA and PA change over time in very old adults.Methods845 participants in the Newcastle 85+ Study were followed for health and functioning at 1.5-, 3-, and 5-year follow-up (wave 2 to 4). PA scores (range 0–18) and PA levels (low (PA scores 0–1), medium (2–6) and high (7–18)) were determined using a purpose-designed PA questionnaire. We used linear mixed models (LMM) to investigate factors associated with 5-year change in PA scores.ResultsOverall, men had higher mean PA scores than women (up to 2.27 points). The highest proportion of participants (42–48%) had medium levels of PA across the waves. Although most experienced decline—stability in moderate and increases in high PA levels were also observed. The fully adjusted LMM revealed a curvilinear annual decline in PA scores of 0.52 (0.13) (β (SE), p<0.001), which decelerated by 0.07 (0.02) points (p<0.01) over time. The factors associated with low PA scores at baseline were female gender, higher waist-hip ratio, and no alcohol intake. Better self-rated and cognitive health and having fewer diseases were associated with higher PA scores. None were associated with the rate of change in PA over time.ConclusionWe observed a curvilinear trend and deceleration in PA scores decline in the very old. Men and those in better health and who drank alcohol were more physically active at baseline. None of the factors were associated with the rate of PA decline. Investigating those who maintain or increase levels of PA may inform interventions for at risk groups with PA decline.

Physical Activity and Sleep in Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Fibromyalgia Syndrome: Associations with Symptom Severity in the General Population Cohort LifeLines.

Objective The aim of the current study was to compare physical activity and sleep duration between patients with chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), patients with fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS), and controls and to examine the association between physical activity level and sleep duration with symptom severity within these patient groups. Methods This study used data of LifeLines, a general population cohort in which 1.0% (n=943, 63.7% female, age 44.9 (SD 11.6) years) reported CFS, 3.0% (n=2,714; 91.6% female; age 48.4 (SD 10.7) years) reported FMS, and 95.7% (n=87,532; 57.9% female; age 44.3 (SD 12.4) years) reported neither CFS nor FMS. Physical activity, sleep duration, and symptom severity were assessed by questionnaires and analysed using ANCOVA and regression analyses, adjusted for age, sex, body mass index, smoking, and educational level. Results Patients with CFS and FMS had significantly lower physical activity scores (8834 ± 5967 and 8813 ± 5549 MET ∗ minutes) than controls (9541 ± 5533; p < 0.001). Patients with CFS had the longest sleep duration (466 ± 86 minutes) compared to patients with FMS and controls (450 ± 67 and 446 ± 56; p < 0.001). A linear association between physical activity, sleep duration, and symptom severity was only found in controls, in whom higher physical total activity scores and longer sleep duration were associated with a lower symptom severity. In contrast, quadratic associations were found in all groups: both relatively low and high physical activity scores and relatively short and long sleep duration were associated with higher symptom severity in CFS, FMS, and controls. Conclusion This study indicates that patients with CFS or FMS sleep longer and are less physically active than controls on average. Both low and high levels of physical activity and short and long sleep duration are associated with higher symptom severity, suggesting the importance of patient-tailored treatment.
